Don't look at how good/bad you did yesterday when looking at today. Look back a year, you'll get a better view of you far you've come
It's easy to forget that there have been changes, especially when recovering/healing. Maybe you're washing your clothes more often, maybe you're eating better for yourself, maybe you've asked for help when you needed it
You're getting better, slowly but surely, you're going to keep getting better

“Oh I can’t believe Dad did all this!” Y/n gasped and grabbed at Quinn’s upper arm as he was pulling into the driveway. The outside of Y/n’s childhood home was adorned with Christmas lights and the yard had an inflatable Santa with Rudolf. “He used to do this for me and Leora growing up.” Her eyes were crinkled in the corners from smiling so brightly.
Quinn grabbed their bags out of the car and headed up the walkway to the front door. None the wiser that she had stopped to take a picture to send off to her older sister of the old blow up that graced the front yard. He soon realized she wasn’t by his side when he was first greeted with hugs making him tense at first, a bit uncomfortable.
"Merry Christmas, Quinn!" Y/n's mother beamed as she pulled him into a warm embrace. The smell of gingerbread wafted from the kitchen, mingling with the signature comforting perfume of her mom. “We are all so happy you could join us here this year! We are so excited to have you two home for Christmas.” Quinn felt the tension ease from his shoulders and relax from her greeting.
Merry Christmas, Momma!” Y/n yelled from behind Quinn trying to shuffle around him to get to her.
Her mother released Quinn and wrapped her daughter in her arms. “Look at you two all dressed alike for your travels!” she exclaimed, her eyes shining with joy as she pulled back to look at them both. “Look sweetie, they have matching Christmas sweaters!” Her mother yelled over her shoulder towards Y/n’s father while also ushering the two in. “Do you remember when we were their age, just two kids so in love we couldn’t stand it?”
Quinn took a moment to appreciate the warmth of the house, the soft glow of the Christmas lights reflecting off the family photos lining the walls, framed certificates that had been earned by Leora or Y/n through the years, and low hanging taped coloring pages. He watched as Y/n disappeared into the kitchen to help her mom, her need to catch up with her mom showing. It wasn’t long after that her sister, and co arrived. Their ever curious two-year-old daughter toddled over to Quinn, her eyes wide with curiosity towards the stranger. He knelt down, offering a gentle smile.
“Hi! Bye!” She said loudly into Quinn’s face, waved nearly smacking him before toddling off to her grandpa.
“I am so sorry about that, she is in a “there is no stranger danger” phase right now. Name’s David, Leora’s husband.” David apologized and stuck his hand out to Quinn to shake. Quinn, the ever socially awkward person shook his hand but forgot to introduce himself. “I’m going to guess that you’re the ever famous Quinn we hear about all the time?”
“Right. Sorry man, yes. M’Quinn, I’m Y/n’s boyfriend.” Quinn cleared his throat and rubbed the back of his neck.
He searched the room for his girlfriend hoping he could meet her eyes and plead with her to come to him, but she was yet to resurface from the kitchen. He couldn’t help but feel a bit out of place amidst this flurry of familial affection. He had only been able to meet Y/n’s parents a few times, and while they were very welcoming, he was still the outsider at their intimate gatherings. Her parents loved him and accepted their relationship, but with the two of them living in a different country than the rest of her family, it hinders the process of getting to know them better.
David had to sprint off after his toddler to keep her out of the presents and Y/n’s sister was now in the center of the living room, cradling her freshly changed and back to sleeping three month old son.
“Quinn, do you.” Y/n’s eyes caught a hold of her older sister and her baby nephew.
The sight of Leora with the baby boy brought a new level of excitement to Y/n’s eyes. She nearly squealed and rushed over.
“Lee, can I?” Y/n’s voice was soft, warm, but held a hint of longing buried deep behind it. Her sister handed over the tiny bundle of joy with a knowing smile, and Y/n's heart swelled.
Y/n’s soft gasp spread across the room as she took her nephew into her arms. Y/n's eyes searched for any sign of resemblance between Leora and the tiny baby, her fingers tracing the soft lines of his face. He stirred slightly at her touch, his tiny eyes blinking open to reveal the same shade of brown as his mom’s. Y/n whispered a proud, "Hey there little man, I’m your auntie," and his eyes locked onto hers. At the most perfect time his muscles twitch causing him to smile at her.
“Quinn, come look.” Y/n called and he moved cautiously. He was already taking in so much, feeling so much in that moment. It was a moment that seemed to freeze time for Quinn, watching his girlfriend hold something so tiny and fragile like it was the most precious thing in the world. Watching her mask how badly she wants that life for herself. Quinn was feeling the weight of this moment in the millions multiplied by his Christmas gift for her.
"Honey, why don't you two go sit in the rocker?" Y/n's mom suggested, noticing the way Y/n's eyes never left the baby. She knew that look all too well, it was the same look she had when she finally held her daughters for the first time. “It’s down in your all’s old room.”
“Can I?” Y/n asks her sister hopefully, after all the small human in her arms isn’t hers.
With a simple smile and a nod of approval y/n carried him into the room that used to be hers and her sister’s sanctuary. The rocking chair, a well-loved piece of furniture that had seen countless bedtimes and stories, sat back in its rightful place in the corner. Y/n settled into it, her body moving automatically with the gentle sway as she held her nephew close.
Quinn slowly followed her down the hall, unsure if he could handle another sight of her so domestic.
In the room, Y/n's voice was a soft lullaby, humming the familiar tune of "You Are My Sunshine." The rocking chair creaked rhythmically, echoing the steady beat of her heart. She sat in the glow of the Christmas lights that had been strung across the ceiling, casting a warm, nostalgic ambiance over the space. The baby's eyes grew heavy as he listened to the sweet melody that had filled this room so many times before. Y/n's mother looked on from the doorway with a knowing smile, her own eyes misting over with tears.
Y/n’s mom had sensed something was different. She just couldn’t quite put a finger on what it was with her daughter. She could sense that something has shifted in her in the last year or so and seeing her with her nephew only solidified her thoughts.
“When were you all going to tell me?” Her mother softly asked, grabbing ahold of Quinn’s hand giving it a comforting squeeze. “I would have been on the next flight to Vancouver. I’m sure she told you I had tro-.”
With wide eyes and nearly choking on his intake of air he startled her quiet mid-sentence when he looked at her so fast.
“No, no, this is just her longing for her own family..She wants her own family so badly and I want a family with her.” Quinn explained. “I will do whatever it takes to give her whatever she wants, we’ve discussed it. Even been to a specialist to ease her mind.”
Y/n’s mother nodded, she was shocked she misunderstood what her daughter was portraying, she thought she knew that look in her daughter’s eyes well, she was so sure it was the same one she had before she finally had her own children. Watching the different looks cross Y/n’s mother’s face Quinn took a deep breath before his next words fell, “I talked to your hu..”
She cut him off this time. “I know honey. Hard part is talking to her.” She patted him on the back and headed back down the hall, sending y/n’s brother in law after the baby. “Don’t wait any longer!” She whisper-yelled back to Quinn.
David poked his head into the room, “Hey, you okay?” He nodded towards the baby in Y/n’s arms, “He’s probably looking for a bottle, he’s usually hungry around this time.”
“But he’s asleep?” Y/n countered.
“Oh yeah.” He racked his brain for a different reason than a bottle. “Let me take him and check his diaper at least. Momma sent me in here don’t want to come out with out the baby.”
Y/n looked down at her nephew and her heart swelled. She didn’t want to let him go, but she knew her sister would let her have him again before her and Quinn left. She kissed him on the forehead and passed him over to his daddy.
Quinn took a deep breath as he leaned against the door frame. He admired the warm glow from the Christmas lights and the way they cast a soft halo around Y/n once more.
“Hey sweet girl, how about you come with me?” Quinn asked her.
She looked up from her lap and met his soft gaze and smiled at him before meeting him in the doorway.
Quinn led her to the formal living room that had been left untouched by the Christmas chaos of the toddler. The large Christmas tree in front of the window was the only thing that took up space in the room. They sat down together on the plush couch, the colorful lights from the tree casting a glow around them. Y/n leaned into him and took a hold of his hand playing with his fingers like she always does when they cuddle on the couch, basking in the comfort of his presence.
He took in a deep centering breath before starting to spill his heart out.
"You know, I'm not very good at expressing how I feel or remembering to tell you just how much you mean to me," Quinn began, his voice low and earnest.
"That was a constant struggle for us, wasn’t it?” She whispered and pinched his hand for effect. Quinn let out a little yelp of pain before continuing what he was trying to say.
“But I need you to know you’re the other half of my heart, the one that keeps me going even when I'm miles away from home." His words were met with a soft sigh from Y/n as she nestled closer. "I can't imagine a Christmas without you by my side."
He paused and sat her upright so he could look her in the eyes.
“No. Not just Christmas without you, but New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, uhm uh, what comes next?” He started to stutter and stumble over his words. “Whatever it is, I don't want to do it without you. I haven’t had to in a while now and I don’t want to start now, okay?”
“Quinn, where is this coming from?”
“From my heart, where you’ve been living in since the first day we met.” He replied, his eyes never leaving hers. His thumb traced the line of her jaw as he continued. “You’ve given me more joy, more comfort, more love than anyone I’ve ever known. And every time I hold your hand, or kiss your forehead, or see your smile light up the entire rink when we see each other at warmies. God how you just were with your nephew, how I know you’re going to be with our. I know that this is where I’m meant to be, with you, forever. And I want to make that promise to you, in front of everyone who loves you, who loves us.”
Her eyes searched his, looking for any doubt, but there was none to be found, only love, pure unadulterated love. Quinn was moving to the floor to kneel on one knee when she grabbed at his face.
“Yes. A thousand times over. In a different universe yes. In a different time period yes. God you could have asked me 24 hours after we met and I would’ve said yes.” She felt her heart beating faster than ever before she was talking so fast and not taking a break in between her words.
“Sweetheart you didn’t even let the poor boy ask!” A sweet frail female voice rang out. Quinn looked over his left shoulder and Y/n peaked right his shoulder.
“Hi Granny.” Y/n giggled.
Her grandmother’s announcement got the attention of the rest of her family giving Quinn an audience. “Alright young man, get on with it I’m hungry!” A huskier, grumpier voice huffed out.
“Pappy! Let him be.” Leora scolded. A couple “shhhs” rang out and finally the silence was deafening. Quinn was positive his heart beat could be heard.
He readjusted himself to down on the carpet on one knee taking in a calming breath. Looking into Y/n’s eyes.
“Y/n, I’ve love you. Your spirit, your heart, your soul, they’re all so bright and beautiful. You light up any room you walk into, you make me want to be a better person. You’re the one who’s always been there for me, through every up and down. You’re my best friend, my partner, and the love of my life. Will you marry me?”
Much to her Pappy’s satisfaction he finally popped the question, his voice shaky although he knew that she already said yes before he asked, as he opened the small velvet box to reveal a sparkling sapphire gemstone aside an opal gemstone in the shape of hearts.
Without needing to answer again she still whispered a soft yes with a bright smile as Quinn slid the ring on her finger. She fell to her knees and once again grasped his face. She kissed him softly and with as much love as she could convey in one simple kiss.
“Quintin Jerome Hughes, I love you with everything that I am.”

The United Conservative Party’s changes to Alberta’s labour laws are the worst in the country according to experts—even worse than the province’s previous Progressive Conservative governments.
“The UCP’s track record has been terrible for workers,” Athabasca University labour professor Bob Barnetson told PressProgress. “Things are worse than they were in 2015.”
Alberta already had the lowest unionization rates and the most regressive labour laws in the country, thanks to 80 years of right wing governments between 1935-2015, Barnetson notes.
However, between 2015-2019, the Alberta NDP conducted the province’s first major labour law overhaul in 30 years to bring Alberta’s labour codes in line with the rest of the country. These reforms included single step union certification, restoring public sector workers’ right to strike, increasing the minimum wage to $15, modernizing occupational health and safety laws, removing the cap on WCB earnings, improving overtime and leave provisions, creating labour protections for farm workers, among other changes.

Last(??) Line Challenge
So quite a while back I was tagged by @shootingstarpilot for one of these, but I never got around to it because I was being pelted with rocks (homework) while earning my merit badge in pedantry (certificate of editing). There was also the problem of me having no idea where Rumor Has It and Commit To The Bit were going to go. Today, however, I sat down and banged out an entire rough outline for the series, and in celebration of that I want to post some of my favorite notes. (I did not get around to the clean prose today, unfortunately. I hope it's enjoyed all the same!)
CTTB notes, in no particular order or context:
>Coded to Supreme Chancellor Friendpatine your Pal :) >Cody and Obi-Wan’s Terrible Horrible No-Good Very Bad Stealth Adventure >Cody and Obi-Wan: What the fuck did you do while we were gone Waxer: In our defense we were left unsupervised. >Time to visit Friendpatine! He sees Obi-Wan alive and knows the jig is up. ImperialMarch.mp3 >Who’s ready to get COURT MARTIALLED!!! >Cody’s like… can’t Sith give you bad dreams? Room goes surprised_pikachu.jpeg >Obi-wan pops up like Hello There ^_^ >We learn Krell has just come from Umbara, >So it’s about his secret wife but DON’T bring up his secret wife!! >Obi-Wan and Cody go Tails_Gets_Trolled.JPEG because they’ve just found out about the chips >Obi-Wan and Cody just lie on the ground for a while >Cody assigns the 212th a Fucking Break
As a bonus, a favorite pair of lines from the furthest-out "scene" I've written in the series. That counts as the last of something. Sort of.
wolfflecone: okay i have bad news, worse news, and funny news. what order do you want them in.
which eventually leads to:
uncodytional: I’m disowning all of you
As per usual, tags are free to whoever wants them!

hi, i followed your blog for a while and i feel inspired with what you do.
so, back in my college, i took coding classes because i thought i really like coding. but since i've graduated, i didn't get any job that i can apply my knowledge. it's been 5 years and i kinda lose hope and stop coding. there's also many new language out there that i have to learn and i felt overwhelm. it stop me to learn.
i have another job now that has nothing to do with coding. any tips on what can i do?
thank you so much.
Hiya!
I’ve answered a similar post just a couple days ago { the post } you could see if that helps you!
Other advice I have is:
1. Find the job title you want. What work-life balance you want + what you would like to be doing (skills + interests) + what your goals are financially and career-wise = your dream job. I’m telling you to really think about it, not just “Oh a developer” but think how the job matches you. For instance, I wanted a job that involved programming websites, allowed me to work from home and pays good so I can save = Web Developer/Software Engineer.
2. Follow a roadmap for your learning: now you found the job title, learn the skills. But before you learn the skills, you need to know what skills to learn. Try roadmap.sh for most Computer Science based jobs and the route in learning to become the job(?) I don’t know how to word that sorry! But look around the website and follow a roadmap.
3. Now I don’t know what area in coding you want a job in, so I can’t recommend you specific resources for learning, but in the post I shared at the top, I listed most places you can learn coding and even earn certificates!
4. Get your LinkedIn top notch. Connect with random developers/engineers/tech-related recruiters. You don’t need to know them, just ‘connect’. That’s literally what I do!
5. Fix your CV/Resume. You don’t need to rely coding work experience, so even if you have none… ⬇️
6. A handful of good projects to showcase is even better!
7. If possible, find some free bootcamps that fit your schedule. If you’re in the UK, the Government has been giving out free 12-week bootcamps for the last 2 years now and I joined one to learn React, Node and Express - the tech I use in my job now! Find something similar in your country.
8. Most important of them all: be kind to yourself. I don’t know how the last 5 years has been treating you that you couldn’t find a coding job, but starting to put your head down and say “Enough is Enough” and work on yourself and skills to get that coding job you want is way better. The past is the past, we can’t do anything to change it. “Oh I wish I did this and that” no, focus on what you can change - your future. Don’t push this for later but get to planning and scheduling time to study, build projects, make mistakes but carry on, take breaks, repeat until you get yourself that interview for a job. Just don’t story until you reach your goal 🥅
Hope this helps~! 🙋🏾‍♀️✨🌸

Unit 10: Nature Interpretation's Role in Environmental Sustainability
Tumblr media
If I were to be totally honest with myself, the only reason I took this course to begin with was to fulfil a credit required to earn a certificate of environmental conservation when I graduated. There were very few options as to what credits I could take, and this one was available so I jumped at the chance. But I could not have been more lucky in taking that chance. That is because from the start of my university career I have consistently asked myself ‘what if I went the other way?’ I ask myself this because when I graduated highschool I was at a pretty big crossroads. I had spent my years in highschool volunteering as a student journalist in addition to taking the required science credits to go on one of two career paths: that of the scientist or that of the journalist. I of course took the route of the scientist, but again, what if I had gone the other way? This thought persisted, and as a result I have always valued the chance at learning how to integrate what I learned in science with that of communication, unfortunately I haven’t had as many chances to build these skills as I would have liked. Enter: this course.
In taking this course I unknowingly received the perfect opportunity to do what I’d always wanted, interpret what I’d learned in my zoology major and gain the skills to present it to a larger audience. Over the course of this semester I have learned way more about nature interpretation than I could have predicted, and I am definitely leaving this class a better communicator than when I began. So then, what have I learned?
I think one of the most important things I learned within this course was the importance of ethics while communicating. I’ve always tried my best to consider my audience when creating a project, but at the end of the day I am just one person with one point of view. Something that stood out to me while taking this course was the emphasis placed on privilege and the part it plays in experiencing nature and the lack of opportunities faced by those who lack it. In my own personal ethic I have always strived to be empathetic, honest, and responsible for my actions. But, what this course has allowed me to do is see the ‘invisible backpack’ described by Gallavan (2005) that many people carry with them. In considering my own code of ethics I need to be responsible in not making assumptions about certain groups, and know that not everyone has had the same opportunities as I have. Like many people I have felt the guilt of having these opportunities when others don’t, but rather than continue to think that simply feeling bad about my place in our society is enough, I know I have to strive to do better and make personal goals for myself. In other words, in order to be a good communicator I can’t just provide for one audience, but all audiences. It is so easy to tell people that if they want to experience nature then they should just go outside and touch the grass as they say, but this is not as easy as people think. There are hundreds of invisible barriers people with privilege who perceive their norm as the cultural norm simply cannot see. Economic barriers, cultural barriers, communication barriers, and so much more. It is learning about these barriers, and working with the people who face them that we can find ways to overcome them and provide less privileged people with interpretation catered to their needs rather than the same run of the mill experience that may be equivalent to others experiences, but not nearly as impactful.
I mentioned before how I once wanted to become a journalist rather than a scientist, and how I am still striving to be a better communicator. Communication is a broad term that has many different definitions. If I wanted to communicate with someone, I could do so using visuals, or music, or writing, or even through dance. Over history, different cultures have found different ways to interpret nature and communicate lessons learned from it to the next generation. For me, my skill set lends itself to utilising writing as the best approach to nature interpretation. Not only am I more confident in the written word, I am creative as well, or at least I try to be. Both the textbook and Strauss (1996) describe the importance of anecdotes and imagery to engage the audience. I know that throughout my life the lessons I have remembered the most were the memorable ones that had a great story behind them. It's part of the reason I can recount twenty hours of lore for major sci fi franchises and yet can barely remember my first year chemistry class. What sticks with people are experiences, and if you can engage people with nature through an immersive and creative experience, they will take that lesson and repurpose it for themselves.
Next year I plan to take a year off science and pursue a graduate certificate course in creative writing. I am in no way giving up science, but what I am doing is trying something new, and something I have always wanted to do. I have learned that influencing people to learn science through media such as fiction and other forms of creative writing can be just as impactful if not more so than discovering the facts in the first place. I hope to one day use what I have learned in this class and the rest of my undergrad to not only continue to be a responsible scientist, but a scientist who can communicate creatively with the next generation and inspire them to consider not just their own needs, but everyone's needs when it comes to nature.

Suburban Nightmare The Scariest Part About Moving to the Suburbs is the Fear of Having to Move Back to the Hood
I grew up in the "hood" of Northwest Ohio and throughout my childhood I was repeatedly told by teachers and social workers "you have to have a college degree." To survive, to live a good life, or to go on vacation once a year, they never specified why we needed to have one - the adults just told us this from the third grade onward in a tone that was serious and haunted us as we clawed our way to high school graduation. Well I moved to the suburbs to pursue a college education, received my Bachelor of Arts, but then wound up jobless for the first 2.5 months after graduating, fearing that I may have to return to the life I thought I left behind in the hood.
This is what it was like.
Part 1/3: Restless
Tumblr media
The first few days were not too bad.
I finished school on a Tuesday and had the graduation ceremony the following Saturday. Though I was anxious to begin working full time again after taking almost a month off to focus on school, I forced myself to appreciate having a few days to catch my breath after completing the toughest semester of my undergrad career - under the assumption that my boss would call me back to give me my schedule as promised.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But they never called me back.
I texted. I called. I emailed. Nothing.
I reached a supervisor in my department who promised they would make sure my employer called me once they returned from vacation, but the supervisor also warned me "if you get a new opportunity, take it, because I'm not sure what [they] are planning with you."
I texted. I called. I emailed - for weeks.
Still nothing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Feeling scorned, neglected as an employee, and painfully confused, I knew I shouldn't go back; not only was I completely ghosted, but this happened on top of several occasions prior when I was not paid on time, not paid the proper amount, and even scammed by a company hacker. And I knew I didn't deserve the shame of going back to a place begging for employment where I had already been so mistreated.
So the job search began.
Part time. Part-time remote. Entry level. Entry level temporary. Full-time summer. Freelance. Temporary full-time summer.
The amount of key terms I came up with to expand my search for jobs ought to have earned me a certificate in SEO optimization. Within a matter of weeks I had easily applied for hundreds of jobs; some remote, some on-site, some part-time, some full-time, some freelance, some temporary.
Job applications had just one line to mention my education - school, degree, and major; I have a degree in English and Digital Media Studies. I could generalize my degree to a Bachelor's in digital communications. I minored in criminal and social justice. I took a digital photography class. I've completed course service-learning hours and internships with a variety of non-profits. I took an HTML coding class. I wrote a parody of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. I graduated with a 3.6 GPA. I got an A+ in a digital journalism class. I wrote a 20+ page essay for my capstone that I plan to expand into a book. My second capstone was a documentary I could submit to a film festival. These extra points of academic accomplishment were bullet-listed in applications where there was a degree description space, otherwise these were only recognized and respected in my LinkedIn profile.
There wasn't enough space in the education history line to explain all of the challenges I surpassed or all of the awesome awards and accomplishments I earned while getting the degree to write in my education history. I started a student org focused on newscasting. I was the VP of our Black Student Union for 2 years and spoke on behalf of the union at a peaceful protest following the death of George Floyd. I won recognition for Student Org of the Year - twice in a row. I became the student manager of the student engagement department. I was an active member of the Latino Student Union for over 3 years. I petitioned for a town-hall meeting for students and faculty to better our DEI awareness across campus. I was invited to a one-on-one meeting with the university president. I advocated for PRISM and LGBTQ+ acceptance across our campus. I hosted and evaluated numerous surveys to better serve our campus community. I participated in a plethora of volunteer opportunities and campus events. I was an orientation leader. I was an RA. I served as a mentor to underclassmen. My name consistently appeared on the Dean's List.
Suddenly it seemed like my degree did not carry much value. Few job postings prioritized candidates with my degree type - "digital communications but a degree in marketing preferred." It's like they wanted the skills earned from my degree as part of the job description, not the qualifications. Most job postings didn't seem to value my degree at all: "remote communications strategist - degree in journalism or other related field a plus, not a requirement." I had slaved for four years; four years of 18 - 21 credit hour semesters while spear-heading a student org and working anywhere from 2 to 4 jobs at a time, and some trauma healing/family drama because the Universe likes to keep herself entertained I guess. I was the first in my family for over 4 generations to earn a college degree. I took out tens of thousands in student loans. I went to an exam on 4 hours of sleep. I closed work at 1am and went to class the next morning at 8. I had nervous breakdowns and still got my 8-page essays turned in by 11:59pm.
But none of that seemed to matter. In the eyes of employers, overcoming all of those obstacles and challenges did not reflect how I was a good candidate for their position.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only thing employers seemed to really take into consideration was previous work experience; that shouldn't have been a problem for me, as my resume was rich with experience by having to work to pay for school anyway. I'm a previous graphic designer. I was an intern for a local newspaper. I was a full-time social media manager for one summer. I have various experience mentoring kids/students ages 14 through 19. I was a shift leader at Family Video before the pandemic made us close all our stores. I was a remote political journalist during the 2022 midterms. I've been a coffee barista and was promoted to opening shift leader after my first 30 days. I coordinated a friend's wedding. I became a freelance state manager for a remote election reporting company. I managed the student engagement department and adapted our traditional events to a virtual medium. I've filed parking permits and incident reports. I've painted yard signs. I've hosted people to their dining seats. I've supervised. I've lead. I've delegated. I've supported. I've created. And I've always worked so so hard because in any and every job I could not sleep at night unless I did my best.
The few jobs I did hear back from said they chose "a better candidate" - aka someone with more experience. Either places are preferring to hire older people who have had the chance to garner more experience after college, or getting a college degree is redundant - and that notion of my hard work, discipline, and financial sacrifices from the past four years amounting to arbitrary value was what really started to freak me out.
The college dorm I was escaping homelessness in started looking like a haunted house; the frustration and hopelessness was written in the walls. My life started getting scary. Had my hopes and dreams been built on a lie? Was college just a deferment of the demise set for me by being born and raised in poverty?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The vacancy of my roommate's absence was soon followed by my own absence of income, food, and purpose. No meal plan. No job. No savings. No fail safe. No side hustle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And no idea what to do next.

This is why, so many people advised my generation (I'm about 40) "not to go to school if we didn't understand what we were getting out of it."
There were also many who were not aware of the price of tuition trend who advised me to go, working off nothing more than the average earning power of every level of education. (I'm not going to say some degrees are worthless, because that is not true. But some degrees are overrepresented compared to positions available and some are underrepresented.)
A surprising number of available positions are considered "High School Diploma required" but since many high schools have turned into college prep schools instead of high schools, and therefore no longer teach machine shop or welding or basic electrical work to the level of certification anymore. It's gotten to the point that there's no point in going to high school either.
Go down to your library, or used bookstore, (or amazon.com) and find some technical manuals in whatever subject you want jewellery making, or welding, or beekeeping. Or go down to your county courthouse and find the building inspector's office, and buy a copy of the building code, and just read it.
It won't give you practice doing any of the techniques, but you'll have an idea of the range of skills it would take to be competent in the field. Give you a lot more information about which fields you might want to get into or stay out of than you might get any other way. Then walk into a place of business like that, get a summer internship, look around for who's having the most fun, and find out what it takes to have that position, (education-wise, certification-wise, stress levels, work/life balance-wise, etc), whether you still want it / and think you can manage that. etc.
And the ridiculous part is that technical education(STEM) is exactly how we won the world wars and the Cold War, we know that's what it takes to keep the standard of living moving forward, but we've let two or three generations of youth see that banking and investing, instead of being a basic utility that is meant to lubricate industry for everyone, turn into a many-tentacled leach monster that is sucking it all dry. And when there weren't enough banking jobs available, and not enough people willing to say, investing (not speculating) is actually hard tedious work, but mostly just takes a lot of algebra, here's Securities Analysis 2nd Edition by Graham and Dodd. The Bible of Investing.
Or you can learn calculus and business communication and go into Engineering. Or statistics and go into biology. or both and go into Physics.
But no, of course not, you don't need to learn anything, just buy whatever feels right without doing market research on how you're going to help people with it and lose your shirt in crypto or college debt.
It's not the bank's fault that the car salesman is predatory, nor the car salesman's fault that banks are predatory, but together you cannot trust them.
Same with colleges and banks.
Colleges ought to be saying, Don't trust banks, use this worksheet to calculate the real cost of borrowing money, against the real cost of taking longer to finish your degree if you just take night school. Etc. (Do you already have a job that would allow you to take night school or whatever? How much is that salary?) How much farther ahead or behind will you be at the end of each year for ten years?
The speech I heard for my college orientation went like this: You are all here because you like learning, and you don't mind working, (or vice versa) and you've chosen one of the narrow ranges of fields that are currently growth fields. (smart choice)
But!
You won't get rich working.
Let me say that again.
You won't get rich working.
(Money comes to those who help people.)
You get more money by helping MORE people.
You will get wealthy by leveraging your own specialisation to better help more people. (Several examples to convince us that by the time we graduate, we should be hiring each other for each other's specialties, rather than trying to be independent generalists.)
Also, you can become wealthy by patiently leveraging your growing net worth to help more people help other people. (Which neatly includes, growing your business, investing in other people's businesses, and repairing and managing real estate.)
(A quick example of how he bought broken-down real estate, fixed it up, and found people who actually needed it, to sell it to.)
And then he wrapped up with a tour of the college and help getting our library cards.
Tumblr media
They just want there to always be a class of people who are forever in debt. Whether it's chattel slavery, prison, student loan debt, medical debt, renters who will never be able to own a house, etc.
