And I think that is not unique to Israel, that is not unique to Palestine, that is not unique to Zionism. In his book, Coates writes that his father, Paul Coates, the publisher of Black Classic Press, was an early influence in informing his view of the conflict. “I remember watching World News Tonight with my father, and deriving from him a dull sense that the Israelis were ‘white’ and the Palestinians were ‘Black,’ which is to say that the former were the oppressors and the latter the oppressed,” Coates recalls. “And once — back when I dreamed of being a poet — my father had handed me a book by the Palestinian-American poet Suheir Hammad titled Born Palestinian, Born Black, and this combination felt natural to me, though I could not have articulated then why,” he adds. Paul Coates, whose company has long been dedicated to unearthing “obscure and significant works by and about people of African descent,” has also been a subject of controversy in recent weeks over his decision to republish an antisemitic screed called The Jewish Onslaught — which seeks to uphold a widely discredited conspiracy theory alleging Jewish domination of the Atlantic slave trade. But the book — first published in 1993 by Tony Martin — is no longer available on the Black Classic Press website, and appears to have been removed after Jewish Insider highlighted its inclusion in the company’s catalog in late September. FWIW, it appears that the Tony Martin Jewish Onslaught thing wasn't entirely a one-off; I looked up Paul Coates' Black Classic Press on Wikipedia and discovered that another author for whom they published no fewer than 11 works was Yosef Ben-Jochannan, who (according to his Wikipedia page) claimed to be of Ethiopian and Yemeni Jewish descent but probably was not, and also claimed to have various doctoral degrees that he did not have, from universities he never attended. One of his books published by Black Classic Press was We the Black Jews: Witness to the "White Jewish Race" Myth, in which, according to the Wikipedia page, "he asserts that the original Jews were from Ethiopia and were Africans. He says that the Semitic (Middle Eastern) Jews later adopted the Black Jewish faith and its customs. He further accused the Semitic Jews of using special powers to 'manipulate and control the Mind of the World' and claimed that Holocaust education is a form of brainwashing."

Many actual historians and classicists have accused him, apparently with good reason, of publishing and teaching pseudohistory that is inconsistent with the documented historical record. Nonetheless, this appears to have had an influence on Ta-Nehisi Coates, who is quoted in a New York Times obituary for Yosef Ben-Jochannan:

Her brother just wanted to know if Y/N knew anything about that. After all, maybe it was nothing. A necessary detour, without there having been a secret meeting. But he wanted to check.

She didn't know, but she promised to find out.

I live in a semi-rural part of the south. With my synagogue being well into an hour away and having to cross state lines. There is not a Jewish community in the town I live. I still participate in my own family's christmas celebrations because to us it's always been secular. I may have a few more reservations about singing songs that speak of Jesus as divine. In the same direction one of best friends who is Christian and who's father preaches when I can't get to synagogue always makes sure I have someone to share the Purim story with. The same friend celebrated Chanukah with me and learned how to make Latkes.

And with all the issues that come with "looking Jewish" despite the fact there is no real way to look Jewish. My name isn't Jewish enough for goyim. Why is my hair blonde? Why isn't my nose bigger? Why are my eyes light? Why don't I fit the antisemitic character in their head? How can I be ethnically German and Jewish at the same time? Man oh man I must really be confused and hate myself.

The days felt increasingly empty in the place that was supposed to be his mind. At an amusement carnival that had now become a rollercoaster of endless emotions.

His eyes, swollen from crying, wandered lazily through the dark corners, his mind was blank, but not in a good way, he was not “blank” as people describe an episode of ecstasy. He was blank because he decided to submerge into the deep sadness that crossed his being.

As if that were not enough, and although it did not help much, he was constantly visited by someone who claimed to hate him. He harassed him as if it were a hobby, his favorite pastime.

“You arrived!” It trailed from his lips, his eyes falling on the figure standing erect in front of him, his sadistic smile appearing not to intimidate him.

“Of course you do, brat…It's not like you know anyone else, or like there's a single person who likes you.” His voice was full of sarcasm and loaded with supposed hatred. Unlike before, the mocking and malicious laugh he let out every time he humiliated or tried to humiliate Alfred was no longer there. It had slowly vanished with the wind.

Slowly, his hatred dissipated, if there was even hatred beneath those cold, hard layers of his suit, fur, skin, bones and everything else.

“Anyway, what are you doing sitting there?”

“There's nowhere else to go…I can't do anything else.” His tone was void of any emotion except sadness, the sadness was perceptible. You would notice even if you were miles away.

However, as unlikely as it seemed, the sadness was mixed with a warm tone of joy? or maybe not. It was as if the dark, empty room now glimmered as it welcomed its guest.

“And you plan to stay there until you rot?”

Again, that tone full of feigned hatred. He forced himself to play the bad guy role, even though he didn't really want to. Even if his mind screamed at him to stop harassing Alfred, his ego would never allow it. For nothing in the world would he allow himself to stoop to such a level. For nothing in the world he would help someone who "hates with every fiber of his being."

Or at least, that's what he claims…

“No, but where do you want me to go? I can only wander around…I won’t get anything.”

Alfred's voice echoed again in each of the dark corners, in what remained of the Playhouse, in its safe place turned into ruins.

“I didn't ask you if you wanted to get something. I’m just saying get up now, your ass will freeze.”

The sentence itself was stupid, how could his flat ass freeze if he couldn't even feel pain in that place? Anyway, Pickles just wanted to annoy him.

“Where do you want me to go then? I don’t want to be alone.”

"I don't know, maybe to lose you in hell…This way I can annihilate Jews and make soaps with them without having to hear your unbearable voice."

His frown and mocking expression grew, if that was possible.

Alfred stood up without protest, his eyes avoiding contact with the other. Then he just walked aimlessly, trying to get to the other corner, but in reality there was no corner, it was just an illusion to convince him not to try to escape.

“Where are you going?” Pickles muttered under his breath, clearing his throat right after his murmur. “I mean…Get lost, brat. I don't want to see your disgusting face again!”

His complaint did not get a response, only the sound of retreating footsteps filled Pickles' ears. It was strange, his words always ended up making Alfred cry, but now he was just walking away.

Suddenly feeling a pang of anger, or desperation perhaps, his arm reached out almost involuntarily to stop Alfred, his grip strong enough to hold him there, but not enough to leave a mark.

“Wait, brat.”

“Didn't you want me to leave?!” For the first time, he had raised his voice at him, but the tone of his voice was pathetic as he tried to break free from Pickles' grip, “Let go of me!”

“Don't think I'll let you go, you moron.”

“I told you to let me-

Alfred stopped dead, his breath seeming to be drained from his lungs a few seconds later. Piclkes had grabbed him by the neck, lifting him from his spot, his scowl intensifying, his black eyes shining with jealousy.

Could he let it slip away just like that?

Well the answer is no.

“I'm not going to let you get out of here, you hear? I don't allow you to get close to anyone other than me. It boils my blood to see you even look at another, it turns my stomach to see you smile at Dominatrix, that's why I made sure there is no other left who can take you away from me.”

He didn't care that it was killing him here and now, the sick jealousy he felt was clouding his mind.

“You're a fucking sick person.” Alfred drawled between labored breaths. “I told you to let go of me…” And he began to try to kick him, to desperately try to free himself as his consciousness drained out of him in a matter of seconds.

“Don't think I'll let you go.” He muttered under his breath, his grip on Alfred's neck loosening. But just a little.

“Please…” Alfred repeated, his hands clinging to Pickles' arms, getting no reaction from him. “I don't want to be alone again. “I don’t want to go back to reality.”

Then as his eyes were about to close, he was dropped to the ground with a thud, and the figure standing in front of him laughed, extending a hand to him.

“Are you stupid, idiot? Do you think I'll let you die? If you die I will too. As much as I want to make fun of your corpse for hours.”

“Don't tell me that.”

A sob escaped his lips, Pickles' hurtful words taking effect on him.

“Are you going to cry that easily? You won’t complain or anything?”

Alfred shook his head, another broken sob forced out. The thought of being alone hurt more than the recent strangulation.

“Why are you so mean to me? I never did anything bad to you…”

“Ugh, brat.” Pickles snorted, rolling his eyes and walking over him.

He took Alfred's face in his calloused hands, there was an uncomfortable feeling in his stomach, he would describe it as disgusting and unpleasant. But he refused to let it go. He refused to hold it back any longer.

“You're a nasty crybaby.” He continued, pulling the other's arm tightly, bringing his face closer to his.

“What are you doing?!” Alfred said breathlessly, trying to move away, but being prevented by the other's iron grip.

“I hate you, brat.” But he didn't mean it, judging from the way he then closed the distance between his lips, it was obvious that he didn't really hate him.

On the other hand, Alfred's heart seemed to LITERALLY burst out of his chest, blood rushing to his head in what seemed like just a blink, he was left speechless. And it wasn't because his mouth was occupied with Pickles's lips, but because that kiss seemed to take his breath away in a way that threatened to suffocate him.

“I hate you…” He repeated, his voice cutting like his claws, which held Alfred closely.

But I didn't hate him, it was impossible. His actions contradicted his words, which no matter how hurtful they intended, did not have a mere hint of a threat. Well, he was the kind of person who would say “I only do it because I feel sorry for you.” Even after the most passionate kiss a person could give or receive.

Neither of them could focus on anything but each other, Alfred's sadness faded, as did the evil in Pickles' eyes and voice. Nothing else could be perceived, and if that were not enough, when he opened his eyes, the warmth of the other's death grip was no longer there, at least not physically.

Alfred had returned to the world he hated more than the empty Playhouse, he had returned to reality. He still felt that suffocating pressure on his neck and the pain in his arms.

Now he would have an excuse to escape from reality, an excuse to return to his empty fair, which little by little was recovering its color…

yesterday i was gonna try to help dig an antisemite out of the jew-hatred pipeline. they seemed perfectly fine, just misguided, so i was willing to help at first. until they insulted israeli jews and called them "zionazis" and i gave them the ultimatum that if I was gonna help them they'd have to stop insulting people for the duration of the conversation. and it was like a switch flipped. they began to insult jews every other sentence, specifically converts and israelis, so of course i decided to not go through with helping them bc dont insult ppl means dont insult ppl.

the worst part is they were trying to do this while propping me up as a "good jew" and i find that shit reprehensible. i dont feel any warmth when someone is cruel to all other jews and then claims that im good bc im "not like them". surprisingly people insulting those that i care about doesnt make me trust them!

maybe this all says something about leftism that someone besides me could describe better (person was a leftist btw). it's like antisemitic leftists care more about how they appear than helping others. maybe being told "they're horrible, i hate them, but you're one of the good ones! you're better!" is a compliment for them. i dont think antisemites are stupid to the point that they dont realize that they're insulting people, but i do kinda think they believe they're complimenting people when they absolutely aren't.

Hey do you guys want to hear the pawn shop story I don't tell because it sounds so fuckin fake? It is, regrettably, the season for it and I've been thinking of it again.

To preface this story with a defense of my honor, this is neither the weirdest nor the most upsetting thing to happen to me while working at the pawn shop. (The clown mask fake robbery probably takes the cake on both counts.) That is to say that in isolation, all elements of this tale are quite mundane to the reality of working at a pawn shop in southern Indiana.

The year is 2016. I'm a couple years out of art school and have been working at a pawn shop in my small city for most of that time. I am a few months out from the event that will mark, in addition to calamity on a national and global scale, the beginning of the dissolution of my relationship with my parents: the election of Donald Trump. I am also beginning to suspect my new coworker Brian (not his real name) might be kind of a sleeper asshole.

Brian and I were at the jewelry counter this day, when this German couple in maybe their mid-40s walked in. They were friendly and in good spirits, and we chatted a bit while they tried on rings. My grandfather was German, and between that and growing up on Arnold Schwarzenegger movies, German and Austrian accents kind of put me at ease. So I liked these two, up until the fellow tried to negotiate the price of a ring down and the lady said, "He's not Jewish, if that's what you're thinking!"

Now this was far from the first time I'd encountered the greedy/thrifty Jew stereotype while working at the pawn shop. As with many unpleasant interactions, my default reaction was to pretend I hadn't noticed the negativity and forge on ahead. So I said something like, "That's too bad, since I'm Jewish and we would've had that in common."

To which the woman replied, laughing, "See, the joke is you're all greedy!"

Typically when I responded to this sort of thing by revealing that I'm Jewish, the other person would become embarrassed and apologize or otherwise end the interaction. Once or twice someone had covered up the awkwardness of the moment by making as many offensive jokes as possible before one of my coworkers took over, but this blithe statement of perceived fact was new. I did not know how to deal with this.

I said, "That is the stereotype, yes."

I'm not sure how she did it conversationally, but from there she segued quite abruptly into talking about how she really likes that Trump fellow, because he "tells it like it is." My coworker was just nodding along, agreeing with her and chatting, while I stood there wondering how I had ended up in this situation and how quickly I could exit it. Even at the time I was marveling at how hamfisted the moment would have been from a narrative perspective, were this a story and not my own wretched weekday morning. I mean, they were even German, for fuckssake. I hate the punchline/stereotype of all Germans being Nazis because, as I mentioned, my grandfather and his family were German Jews, and I feel like that stereotype erases those people while simultaneously letting actual Nazi Germans off the hook for their own choices. But here I am listening to this conversation and realizing that now I have this story I can't tell because it's too damn stupid.

Presently they left, and I tried to see if Brian had made any sort of connection between these people insulting me to my face and then endorsing this particular candidate, but of course he saw nothing wrong with the interaction. This marked the decline of any fellow-feeling I had towards him as a coworker. Another coworker later told me that Brian "didnt believe" in gay people, which explained why he couldn't work the register-- I trained him, and since I don't actually exist, there's no way he could've learned to do his job properly.

Anyway that's my story. A year or so later I quit with no prospects because having to play nice with people who I knew voted for Trump was making me crazy. Next time I'll tell a more fun story, like the one about all the cockroaches, or the other one about all the cockroaches.

The reason why Japan government is not apologizing for their actions in WWII is that their economy is not blocked by the world after all these shit. I have no morality myself actually, no one will force me agree on anything I haven't learn and think about, I only have what everyone else has: the lessons of history. The protection of minors that you attach great importance to came after the animal protection, and the concept of minors was formed because of the popularity of typewriters and printing presses. The concept of minors is so new and fragile that I think that now the Internet and video have replaced typewriters and printing presses, maybe the age of minors needs to be changed. So you see morality is inherently vague, which means being careful when enforcing it too, not to be deceived by anger and hate.
