“Fiat lux! If you want to talk improbable, let’s talk about this”—a scrape of stone on stone—“being three thousand and some years older than this.” A heavy clunk.
“Inexplicable, Warden.”
“Certainly not. Like everything else in this ridiculous conglomeration of cooling gas, it’s perfectly explicable, I just need to explic-it.”
“Indubitable, Warden.”
“Stop that. I need you listening, not racking your brain for rare negatives. Either this entire building was scavenged from a garbage hopper, or I am being systematically lied to on a molecular level.”
“Maybe the building’s shy.”
“That is just tough shit for the building.”

Cytherea, as Dulcinea: [to the survivors, who are gathered around Protesilaus’ head] So... who broke it? [Nobody says a word] I'm not mad. I just want to know.
Palamedes: I did. I broke-
Cytherea: No, no you didn't. Silas?
Silas: Don't look at me. Look at Gideon.
Gideon: What? I didn't break it.
Silas: Huh. That's weird. How'd you even know it was broken?
Gideon: Because it's sitting right in front of us and it's broken.
Silas: [leans in on her] Suspicious.
Ianthe: If it matters - probably not - but Coronabeth was the last one to use it.
Naberius: Liar! She doesn't even drink that crap!
Ianthe: Oh, really? Then what was she doing by the coffee cart earlier?
Naberius: She uses the wooden stirrers to push back her cuticles; everyone knows that, Ianthe!
Palamedes: Ok, ok! Let’s not fight! I broke it, let me make up for it, Dulcinea!
Cytherea: No! Who broke it??!
Gideon: [looks at Harrow, then at “Dulcinea”] Dulcinea... Harrow's been awfully quiet.
Harrow: REALLY??
Gideon: Yeah! Really.
Harrow: Oh, my God! [everyone starts arguing at one another except Cytherea]
Cytherea: I broke it. It ruined my plans, so I punched it. I predict ten minutes from now they'll be at each other's throats with war paint on their faces and a pig head on a stick. [turns to look at the survivors as they continue to argue, then looks back] Good. It was getting a little chummy around here.

Camilla and Palamedes are just... everything to me. God. I don't read them as romantic or platonic or QPR, though I can totally see all of those readings. To me, they are the perfect embodiment of the necromancer/cavalier ideal. They did it. They got it right.
Think about it. Think about all the duos we see throughout the series. The Second House feels more like coworkers than anything. They work together very well, but there's not enough devotion. The Third House is a mess. Coronabeth and Ianthe have got one flesh down, but not one end. They care about each other like hell, but they don't agree with each other. And let's be real here, neither of them care about Babs. The Fourth House are just siblings, the Fifth House are married, the Seventh House... well, we all know what happened to the Seventh House, and the Eight House necromancer is eating his cavalier alive. Gideon and Harrow get the closest at the end of Gideon the Ninth, but their also very traumatized teenagers, and more codependent than anything else.
But Camilla and Palamedes? They did it! They got it right! They understood that the cavalier can't be the only one to sacrifice, that the necromancer must be willing to do anything for their cavalier too. They'd kill and die for each other, they'd do whatever necessary to keep the other one safe and happy. They're so in sync and so in love. They ate each other like binary stars to keep their love intact even if they as individuals couldn't be.
I just. I love them so much. I would actually die for them.

Okay, I'm going to be very direct and I'm sorry if I come off as mean, but I just have to say it: I hate people who consider NtN a bad book and Nona a bad and/or childish narrator.
First of all: Nona is six months old and dying, it makes sense that she's a "childish" narrator, of course her point of view is strange and slightly useless at some points; she's treated like a child! She thinks a bit like a child!
Nobody says anything to her. I think that's also something to keep in mind: Gideon and Harrow were told things, even if they were half-lies [or just lies] at times, Nona is purposely kept in the dark (even if it's with good intentions for the most part).
And yes, the setting is different, but also (in my opinion) quite more grim than GtN and HtN because it's basically set in a big refugee camp, New Rho is an active war zone (the bombed out buildings where Nona and the gang spend their afternoons, the way the kids at school talk about violence...) but both Nona and her environment are highly desensitized to it. The BoE people are pretty much the dictionary description of guerrilla fighters. Hot Sauce is a radicalised child. Kevin, from the way he is described, seems to have suffered a severe catatonic shock. And Nona doesn't know that.
New Rho is all she's ever known, but the horror, for homely it feels at times, is the basis of it all. Children so used to mass ejecutions that they thalk about them while eating, gas mask that have to be kept on whenever you are outside, a teacher so used to child prostitution that was her first thought upon meting Nona's family, Hot Sauce not thinking twice before shoting her friend's brains out, Honesty being a drug dealer…
Also: I think the underlying body horror of this book is a fucking gift. Phyrra living in her dead best friend corpse, Phyrra drinking bleach because she was bored, Palamedes and Camilla fusing along the way (even before Paul), Nona not remebering how to move correctly at times, Judith sharing a body with a planet's soul, Nona's tantrums destroying her body over and over again, Aim not being allowed to be just herself and having to be the Mensager.

Ianthe, Pyrrha and Palamedes are my top 3 the locked tomb characters, so of course I drew them first. Character design isn't really my passion, but I like what I did with them

Don’t be fooled by the overt aggression. These are two people thoroughly enjoying the rare experience of talking to someone who can keep up with them well enough to actively debate, instead of caving to the condescendinng elitism that has worked so well for them in most other situations. They may as well be giving each other flowers.
