#or is actively hostile to the idea of video games

SOTE haters be like: "boohoo it is all FromSLOP's fault that fans are babyfying Marika and making Miquella a villain, had they not written Marika as an actual person with the story instead of a caricature and had they not put Miquella through tragic descent instead of wholesome hopepunk stuff they literally never did, fans would magically stop ignoring obvious canon clues to make a character into what THEY want instead!!! Bad writing!!!" 🤦♂️
So, "good writing" is writing characters like bland caricatures that have nothing to do with how real humans and world we live in are? Honestly I have no idea what's going on in people's heads when they blame realistic writing (nobody is BORN evil @ naive idealism doesn't work on humans so you either give up or force people to be friends) for the takes they dislike
There is this thing that happened in the Elden Ring fandom that keeps reminding me of the DS2 backlash, but it’s not gamer rage over mechanics and the physical experience of the game — it’s that newer (?) (probably not) wave of nonsense that is permeating countless other fandoms that people recently blame on “puriteens.”
Basically, those younger people that haven’t had enough experience to see the world beyond black and white, Tik Tok-based morals; where everything has to be moderated and pure enough, progressive enough, GOOD enough to meet some high standard of ethics.
I’m honestly relying on the Soulsborne fandom as partial proof that this issue HAS gotten worse in some ways because of Elden Ring…but I wouldn’t be surprised if it started and flourished in places like the Undertale fandom, where the game itself trying to teach a valuable moral lesson resulted in younger people that played it becoming extremely hostile online towards anyone who dared to take the Genocide route to see the outcome.
People who wanted to see the end of that route were going to learn the lesson of the game. They were MEANT to learn that lesson and find out why it was the morally unsound path to take within the context of the story. There were also people who could take that route every time just to enjoy the tragedy of it or simply because it was more interesting.
That was absolute heresy to the puritan fans who wanted to control other players and condemn them for even thinking of committing that crime against the poor characters. They didn’t want the “lesson to be learned,” because in their minds, who would ever willingly go kill to learn that killing was bad?? Oh no, anyone who would do that is evil already!
(Forget that all of it wasn’t real of course…or that the Genocide route was essentially just a regular video game lmao.)
And even since then, I’ve seen this blossom in so many big fandoms.
“Just because I like doesn’t mean I condone blah blah”
Nobody should have to say that statement ever again.
Nobody should have to rigorously defend the satire of “my mass murderer did nothing wrong.”
And more people should understand that even the worst of the worst!!…the… *gasp* justifiers!! of fictional war criminals are often just viewers swayed by the villain or antihero’s philosophy or reasoning for revenge. Or mayhaps they were charmed by devilish good looks. How could the young ladies do this??? /s
The people screaming “Thanos was right!” or whatever, are usually….90% of the time…not mass murders in real life. Some of them might be assholes or creeps, and sure, you might have to smack them upside the head with “Hey! Your justification of this character within the story is a bad interpretation and rooted in bias or misunderstanding!”
Yeah, that can be a problem. Those people can be troublesome in the heat of fandom drama. But then again…toxic fans of any kind can be this way too. Toxic shippers are often some of the cruelest, most actively harmful members of fandoms, and even then…cases where people start getting murdered en masse is rare, mind you. Lol.
Fiction is not what affects reality in a negative way, it’s people’s IDEAS about fiction that affect reality in a negative way…IF they choose to not be responsible with how they react or behave.
That’s it.
Their interpretations, their takeaways, their decisions on how to engage with it or be inspired by it, all of this CAN be negative, yes.
The Genocide route in Undertale did not inspire anyone to go commit genocide, but it did create a wave of fandom puritanism that caused harm to others. And that’s ironic isn’t it? That shouldn’t be the case, right? A story that intended to share a moral lesson about why harming others is wrong ended up inspiring people to harm others in fandom. How does that make sense?
Well, it doesn’t if you blame the game and story.
It DOES make sense if you observe how people were choosing to interpret it. The story itself does not have to be taken seriously, engaged with, or even acknowledged. It only has as much power as you give it.
FromSoftware being blamed for people CHOOSING to treat Marika like she did nothing wrong or people not seeing the signs of Miquella’s downfall is taking the responsibility away from fans for how they engaged with the story.
Now, having said all this. Bad writing does exist and authors absolutely can mislead an audience. That’s a fair complaint and that’s one case where fiction causing people to react negatively lies partially with the fault of the writer, but it’s a spectrum in that situation as well. As fans, we still have a responsibility to not act like animals or treat each other poorly when bad writing upsets us.
I don’t believe the DLC was badly written. I think Marika’s story was beautiful and Miquella’s downfall was built up to reasonably well while still creating a nice mystery for us. I think FromSoftware is smart in leaving gaps in the story for us to fill, because that leaves us with room to decide what we think happened.
But even if they didn’t. Even if the DLC was objectively just bad…it sucked ass….that still in no way justifies what’s been going on this fandom since it released. That still would not be something to blame for people justifying the Hornsent genocide or getting too heated about interpretations of Miquella.
“Honestly I have no idea what's going on in people's heads when they blame realistic writing (nobody is BORN evil @ naive idealism doesn't work on humans so you either give up or force people to be friends) for the takes they dislike.”
Why do people blame writing at all for the takes they dislike? Why do they blame writing for OTHER people’s views and reactions?
Because of everything I just said. They shift responsibility off of others and themselves and blame it all on the story.
Video games cause violence, kids.
#ok i’m done#sorry katy i know i said more than i had to but this has been brewing in my mind for a few months now#it’s not even everything i want to say but whatever#asks#mutuals#elden ring dlc#queen marika#miquella#long post

honestly, i've never understood why people are so hostile to the idea of medic being written as "nicer" and "sweeter" for a change. as if writing him being amything other than cartoonishly evil 24/7 is a cardinal sin. like a character can't have multiple traits at once? it's honestly why i avoided writing anything with medic for a long time because i felt like i was always mischaracterizing him LMAO
Naur literally like... also imo that makes his joke BETTER he's actively funnier if he's a silly giggly bitch clicking his heels and saying Fortnite Und Trinke Cola Yippee! It's no fun if he's like Evil Murderboy 24/7 bc he's NOT textually and that's why he's so fun. I feel similarly abt every other tf2 character btw - "umm he's a HARDENED BADASS KILLER! He would CONSTANTLY say FUCK and he would NEVER be CUTE or GAY" do u not realize how much more interesting and funny it is to have a character who kills people refuse to say "fuck." Does all understanding of dynamic or interesting character types fly out the window when a video game man is threatened with "looking gay."

watched shinkenger and absolutely adored it, but as someone who grew up watching power rangers samurai it was kinda bizarre to experience. I've seen bits and pieces of other sentai shows and it seems like this is the only time (or one of the only times) its been translated so directly. why do you think that is? they didn't even follow goseiger nearly as directly with Megaforce as far as I can tell
the simplest answer is that samurai was an incredibly rushed production, as saban needed something ready for nickelodeon fast after reaquiring the brand from disney. being on a tight deadline like that doesn't leave much room for experimentation, so it was a lot easier to just translate scripts from shinkenger and burn through as much sentai footage as possible to cut filming time. if i wanted to be charitable i'd cut samurai some slack given the time constraints they were under, but that doesn't exactly account for the production not casting ANY japanese actors on a samurai-themed team, so.
beyond the deadlines though it doesn't help that the executive producer was jonathan tzachor, a lazy hack with absolutely bizarre priorities as a showrunner. he was actively hostile to writers suggesting ideas that wouldn't have even cost the production extra money, like the team playing video games in their spare time. people used to theorize he just "likes sentai so much he doesn't want to deviate from the material", but there's nothing to indicate that that's the case and it's fairly obvious he ran his shows this way because it's quick and cheap above all else
previous seasons like lightspeed rescue, time force, SPD, etc. stuck close to their original source material, because there's only so many times you can retrofit a space opera setting around high school/fantasy-themed seasons, but there was still a creative spark present that showed the production cared about what they were making and didn't want to just do a 1-to-1 copy. there's at least a few reasons why i could theoretically recommend someone watch both timeranger and time force, but i can't think of a single reason why i'd ever tell someone to check out samurai after shinkenger
as for megaforce, they were pretty much forced to change things around given that they were combining two shows into one and being heavily mandated to "make it like MMPR" for the anniversary, which just translated to watering everything down into the blandest possible version of power rangers. also, you know, "angels from heaven who blow shit up" probably doesn't fly on american children's television the way it does in japan (though the world would be a better place if it did)

The new phenomenon of Young Men commenting "Fatherless behavior" and its deeply harmful roots in already well established Misogyny in Patriarchy:
Comments like "Fatherless behavior" under harmless videos of women and girls enjoying hobbies, expressing themselves, or simply existing—reflects the harmful impact of reactionary misogyny, "alpha male" ideologies, and incel/Redpill worldviews. These movements perpetuate a toxic framework that dehumanizes women and polices their behavior according to regressive gender norms. Below is a breakdown of the issue and its implications.
1. The Root of the Problem: Misogyny and Reactionary Ideologies
Incel and Redpill Ideologies: These movements claim to expose "truths" about gender, portraying women as objects to be controlled and evaluated, often through shallow metrics like appearance, modesty, or behavior. In these spaces, women's hobbies, creativity, or autonomy—such as gaming or cosplay—are mocked or policed as signs of rebellion against male dominance.
Alpha Coaches like Andrew Tate: Figures like Andrew Tate popularize the belief that women who enjoy "male" hobbies (e.g., gaming) or engage in expressive activities (e.g., cosplay) are acting out due to a lack of proper "male control." This mindset underpins comments like "Fatherless behavior," framing women’s joy as improper without a male's "stern hand."
Religious and Conservative Patriarchy: This ideology blames fathers for failing to "discipline" daughters who express themselves creatively or engage in public-facing hobbies. It promotes the idea that women must adhere to modesty, quietness, and submissiveness, invalidating pursuits like cosplay or gaming, particularly if they involve any degree of visible skin.
2. The "Fatherless Behavior" Insult
Underlying Assumption: The phrase "Fatherless behavior" implies that women and girls pursuing hobbies like cosplay or gaming, or dressing in ways deemed "immodest" (even if entirely normal within the context of the activity), lack male guidance to keep them "in line." It reduces their self-expression to a supposed failure of patriarchal control.
Targeting Visible Skin: The criticism often intensifies when women show even minimal skin in cosplay, despite such designs being common for both genders in many fantasy, anime, and gaming genres. Men portraying shirtless or hyper-muscular characters are typically praised, while women are accused of seeking attention or behaving inappropriately.
Double Standards: Men enjoying gaming, cosplaying, or self-expression face no comparable judgment. For instance, a man dressing as a heroic, scantily clad character is celebrated, while a woman in a similar outfit is condemned.
3. Emotional Impact on Women and Girls
Invalidation of Hobbies: Women in gaming communities or cosplay are often accused of "seeking attention" or "trying too hard," as if their interests are inherently performative rather than genuine. This erodes the joy of participating in these hobbies.
Policing of Bodies: In cosplay, women are disproportionately criticized for costumes that align with canonical designs or popular aesthetics, leading to shame around their bodies. Men rarely face equivalent scrutiny for costumes that show off their physiques.
Denial of Fun and Autonomy: Women playing video games, sharing clips, or streaming are accused of being "fake gamers" or "trying to impress men," stripping them of the right to enjoy gaming for its own sake. Similarly, women cosplaying popular characters are met with skepticism or outright hostility, as if their enjoyment requires external validation.
Emotional Exhaustion: Facing constant criticism for harmless behavior—like dressing as a favorite character, gaming, or posting lighthearted videos—can cause women to feel unwelcome, unsafe, and unmotivated to continue participating in these hobbies.
4. Societal Implications
Normalization of Harassment: Comments like "Fatherless behavior" create a toxic culture where women and girls expect criticism or harassment as the price of participating in public-facing hobbies. Over time, this drives women out of gaming, cosplay, and similar communities.
Enforcement of Double Standards: By perpetuating the idea that women must meet stricter behavioral and aesthetic standards, these ideologies reinforce gender inequality. Women are discouraged from engaging in activities deemed "male-dominated," narrowing their opportunities and potential.
Silencing Creativity and Joy: Young girls interested in cosplay, gaming, or other hobbies often withdraw due to fear of being sexualized, mocked, or harassed. This stifles their personal growth and self-expression, impacting their confidence and long-term development.
Encouragement of Toxic Male Behavior: These movements validate and reward men who degrade women online, creating environments hostile not only to women but to any form of inclusivity or equality.
5. Counter-Arguments to Misogynistic Narratives
Women Are Autonomous Beings: Women’s enjoyment of hobbies like cosplay or gaming is a reflection of their individuality, not a failure of male control. Policing their behavior reduces them to objects rather than recognizing them as full human beings.
Rejecting the Policing of Visible Skin: Cosplay often reflects existing character designs from games, comics, or anime. Criticizing women for accurately representing characters with revealing costumes ignores the creative and artistic skill involved in cosplay. The same criticism is rarely leveled at men.
Gaming Is for Everyone: The idea that gaming is inherently "male" is outdated and exclusionary. Women and girls enjoy gaming for the same reasons men do: challenge, storytelling, community, and fun.
Double Standards in Attention-Seeking: Men engage in cosplay or gaming for various reasons, including self-expression and visibility, without being accused of "seeking attention." Women deserve the same freedom without judgment or harassment.
6. Broader Harm to Women and Girls
Erosion of Safe Spaces: Communities like gaming or cosplay become unsafe for women when misogynistic ideologies dominate, leading to fewer women participating in these spaces and perpetuating male-dominated cultures.
Stunted Personal Development: Young girls internalizing this negativity may avoid exploring interests like gaming or cosplay, fearing judgment or harassment. This limits their opportunities to build skills, networks, and confidence.
Societal Regressiveness: The resurgence of traditional gender norms as a response to women’s growing independence harms everyone by reinforcing outdated stereotypes that limit both women and men.
Perpetuation of Misogyny Across Generations: When young boys see such comments normalized, they may adopt these harmful views, perpetuating cycles of sexism and discrimination.
7. How to Push Back Against This Harm
Challenge Sexism in Communities: Call out comments like "Fatherless behavior" as misogynistic and baseless. Explain how they undermine women’s autonomy and perpetuate double standards.
Support Women in Gaming and Cosplay: Amplify women’s voices and achievements in these spaces. Encourage their participation and highlight the skill, creativity, and passion they bring to these hobbies.
Educate About Gender Equity: Promote awareness about the harm caused by these ideologies and the value of inclusivity in all spaces, from gaming to cosplay.
Celebrate Women’s Contributions: Share examples of women thriving in gaming, cosplay, and other male-dominated areas to inspire and validate others.
Conclusion
The rise of misogynistic ideologies from incel culture, Redpill rhetoric, and figures like Andrew Tate has directly contributed to toxic commentary targeting women enjoying harmless hobbies like gaming or cosplay. Insults like "Fatherless behavior" not only perpetuate double standards but actively harm women and girls by invalidating their interests, undermining their autonomy, and creating hostile environments. Combating this requires collective effort to educate, advocate, and celebrate women’s rights to express themselves freely without fear of judgment or harassment.

Oh! Hello there! Here's something different! A rare text post! I realize I interact very rarely here (and tbh interact very rarely on social media at all, in recent years) but I'm trying to figure out a nicer balance than just dead radio silence.
I guess, hi hello. I'm King -- I'm a nonbinary artist. I draw. I love video games and cute things. And I am trying to beat my anxiety over using social media back with a stick. I dunno how many of my followers are still active here, but regardless of whether you have found me recently or stuck with me for years, you guys really mean a lot to me. It's a really quiet little corner of the internet, but it's mine, and I find comfort in knowing that there's someone out there who was kind enough to take a moment out of their life to see my work.
I want to challenge myself to start posting a little more so I'm slowly posting some of my old art backlog, but maybe also just chattering mindlessly and finding comfort in blogging again.
Man, it's really been a while since I last posted a text post, huh. To be honest, somewhere in the last 2-5 years, I've developed some kind of crippling fear of being perceived and just kind of drop my art on social media like a cat dropping a dead mouse on someone's pillow for praise and just disappear back into the ether. I miss it, though! I miss interaction even if I'm not a particularly chatty person in blog form but, hell, it's a blog and it's silly to be worried about blogging... on a blog.
So here I am. I think part of the anxiety has stemmed from trying to slowly make the switch to twitter and there being so many unspoken rules of engagement on twitter that at some point it all just got all twisted up into a big ball of "well idk how to interact so I guess I won't!" and somehow that just kind of extended to pretty much every social media thing I have. It's kind of wild how hostile social media feels nowadays -- is it just me? I know I have a lot of anxiety but I hope someone out there relates!
Tumblr is a strange blogging platform, isn't it? It makes interacting with people kind of hoop-jumpy and difficult, and yet it still feels a lot more approachable than something like twitter in my opinion (my beloathed).
I've been considering making the jump to Cara seeing so many other artists do the same (and I have made an account), but to be honest, the idea of maintaining yet another social media account fills me with so much bone-deep exhaustion.
I've been really struggling with artblock recently and finding it difficult to find enjoyment in the hobby that I loved so much and has been so formative to me. It feels strangely alienating finding myself incapable of producing artwork the way I used to, but it's been a slow work in progress. Reviving my social media accounts is a step in some direction, honestly! Or at least, I'm hoping it will be.
Tangentially related, I don't draw a lot of fanart -- not because I'm not a fan of things but more because if I spend the energy on drawing, I often want to spend it on original creations (as the #1 and singular fan in that fandom LOL), but I always feel like I should do it more often -- mostly because it's such a delight to see other fans trickle in out of the woodwork. I think this every time in the rare occasions I do post fanwork, haha!
Anyways, I'm not actually expecting anyone to read this but if you did, hello! I hope you, specifically, (yes, you!!!) have the bestest of days! ;)
469th post on this blog, too. Nice.

random swans hcs under the cut ✌🏼
- alex and ash are identical twins and were both amab; alex found out she was trans and transitioned while they were still in high school (i think she actually just kept the name bc she liked it but even if she didn't, i'm thinking her deadname would probably also have started with an A)
- speaking of, both of them played football while they were in high school. alex was more of the star player of the two of them; ash was almost exclusively a bench warmer. their uniforms in current day consist of parts of their old football uniforms
- even though tony is their unofficial ""leader"", the whole idea for the vigilante copycat stuff was the davis'. not rlly much basis for this one admittedly but i think it makes sense, considering they're the most politically active (relatively speaking) of the fans
- and the reason why that is is that they had family who were living in san francisco when it got bombed. again, not much basis but it does make sense to me considering they're motivated enough to be picketing outside the courthouse during jacket's trial. i specifically also have a kind-of oc that's their little cousin who lives in SF; i shifted around some things to feature her in UDC, my beardjacket au fic, but she's existed in my mind even before writing that chapter and i'd like to flesh her out more one day
- i think they're both bi (w pref for the opposite gender) and that ash is ace. that's just on me :-)
- they make fun of each other for being gay All The Time. wlw/mlm hostility.
- ash moved out at some point and lives with his (boy)friend, jack. he still frequents the house somewhat often to hang out with alex, since they're so close, but he very rarely sleeps there anymore
- alex is a little touchy about the whole thing, but she gets it. she just wasn't ever thinking about the possibility of either of them moving out since they've basically been together they're whole lives so she's just been moody about it ever since ash brought it up to her. she's a lot better abt it now, though
- ash is a lot more organized than alex is. he was the only reason the house was ever clean; since he's left, alex really only cleans up if things are getting Direly trashy
- alex LOVES horror movies. ash thinks they're ok. they watch a bunch of them together and alex spends a lot of pocket money on VHS tapes of her favorites
- ash is more of a video game guy. they had a console in the house but he took it when he moved out; alex really only ever used it if ash was playing something multiplayer anyways so she didn't consider it a huge loss
- that said, they both love listening to music. they had a bit of an argument over who was taking what when ash moved out (since their collection was joint owned) and alex ended up keeping the records while ash took the cassettes since ash is the one who actually has a car
- both of them can drive but alex honestly doesn't need a car; she'd take the bus to work most days anyways since ash started his day earlier than she did and would be out the door before she even woke up
- the both have insomnia but alex's is decidedly worse. for some reason, the meds that ash uses don't rlly work on her so she ends up staying up and waking up late. she falls asleep at her job often
- alex works a boring office job. she tolerates it; it's relatively easy and pays fine and she learned some basic computer knowledge from ash so she's basically set on being there for however long she can.
- she also does music on the side, specifically electronic stuff. not ever a thing she'd consider for a job but one of her favorite past times is smoking and jamming out on her synth. ash partakes in these jam sessions sometimes; part of me wants to say he plays a little electric guitar (and that he'd probably love guitar hero)
- ash works in IT. his computer knowledge is almost entirely self taught (esp considering he and alex's would be college years were spent serving in hawai'i) but he's damn good at what he does so it was pretty easy for him to get hired
- their relationship with their folks is... fraught. the whole reason they joined the army was to get away from them, particularly because their mom had always been rather nasty to alex because she favored ash and ash was always really annoyed by that. they thought is was the best years of their lives thus far. ever since coming back home to pick up their stuff when they got back from deployment, they cut contact with them (but not the rest of their family. that said, they refuse to go to any family functions if they kno their parents are gonna be there)
- alex is pretty butch and dislikes wearing fem clothing. ash is honestly kind of more wishy washy about the whole thing; he'd be open to wearing slightly more fem stuff like skirts if he wasn't so put off by the idea of being judged for doing so. most ""fem"" he'll get is painting his nails black every so often
- idk something in my heart just tells me they'd like karaoke. they'd both belt that shit out, no holds barred (but also fans karaoke night just sounds like such a fun idea. just all of them getting wasted and singing silly shit)
- they're just each other's #besties y'k? swans stick together their whole lives and all
#hotline miami#the trash speaks#trashcan's analysis#my favs of the fans could u tell lol#mark is a close second(third?) tho but i don't have as many hcs abt him just yet#will probs make a similar sort of post abt beard at some point

so i fr work in a research building and everytime someone looks me in the eye and tells me they’re working on tuberculosis i gotta try real hard not to fall to my knees and start screaming
#yes it is surprisingly a very active area of research #it shocks me everytime #literally posters i walk past everyday abt tuberculosis and all i can think of is him…..
hi stranger!!! this post came up while i was searching abt TB and i didnt see that you were a red dead redemption(??? that cowboy game that i wish i could play where the main character gets TB) and i was at first very confused that you were like. kind of hostile to the idea of tuberculosis treatment? i saw a post with the name arthur and i was like ohh that makes so much more sense lol
but yeah tuberculosis is still a very big problem, just not one that gets acknowledged much in wealthy or majority white nations. due to several reasons (most notably corporate greed in the pharmaceutical industry), TB treatments are very inaccessible to a lot of people — this has changed very recently, but in some parts global south, just a diagnostic test could cost an entire week’s worth of wages
if you know who john green is, he actually started going in on tuberculosis activism like last year and leveraged his fanbase against johnson & johnson and a biotech company called cepheid in order to get them to reduce the pricing of their treatment & testing equipment in low- and middle-income countries! cepheid & their parent company danaher are still dragging their feet (only the first test for TB is reduced, but if someone tests positive they’re supposed to get a second test that will check what drugs will be effective against their strain. this is a major deal and is still unaffordable to a lot of people).
i’ll restrain myself from infodumping too much about my (very unsettling) special interest, but i have some recommendations in case you’re curious:
phantom plague by vidya krishnan is an incredible resource that is very approachable for someone not familiar with TB history and so full of interesting information. krishnan covers both history and the modern day, and goes into not only some germ science but also the social, political, and financial aspects. this is a massive recommendation to anyone, it’s just really really good
tbfighters . org is a website created by TB activists that’s a great jumping off point for anyone wanting to know what’s up with TB activism right now — includes basic details about TB in the modern day, some very easy calls to action (mostly focused on pressuring cepheid out of their price gouging, with some political information for the US and UK also!), and at the end a bunch of links to learn more!
(also i mentioned john green jumping into the fray earlier, so i have to talk about how he has a bunch of really great youtube videos and tiktoks about TB — history & also the modern day fight against it)
okay sorry this was a lot. please have a good day/night!!! :) <3
wow- this is super interesting !!!! I’ve actually just started my PhD in cell biology and I get so focused on the science I sometimes forget there’s a whole like political and economic landscape to biotech and pharmaceutical companies. doing research, it’s so easy to forget you’re not working in a vacuum!!
honestly as someone from the uk TB is just not on my radar and in my stupid science brain i was like - we can treat it? therefore we solved that problem? very privileged and sheltered of me I know, so I’m so glad you sent me that info!!
it’s crazy to me that i spend so much time getting sad over a fictional cowboy while real people are still going through very real situations with TB and suffering because they can’t afford tests or treatment - something i feel like more people and especially the rdr fandom should keep in mind when making jokes abt a ‘cowboy disease’
so thanks so much for all that!!!! (also …. you should definitely play the cowboy game, it’s amazing but will break you into a million pieces)
have a lovely day!!

My ban from Project Awesome and how i learned that imWheat was never the good guy
Original reddit post, because Reddit had removed it from my account:
----
What is this post?
In August 2023, I received a ban from my old Arma 3 unit Project Awesome. The ban was given in an overreaction to a situation involving the /r/JoinSquad subreddit, of which I gave my own opinion about on the PA Discord.
Given my positive history with both Project Awesome and the unit-owner /u/imWheat, I expected that he would recognize the error and lift the ban. However, the situation escalated inexplicably into a permanent ban for reasons I just don't understand. Despite my efforts to explain the circumstances, Wheat labeled me as "combative" and "unreasonable." This only led to him becoming increasingly more hostile towards me.
This is a (not-so)-short summary and record of events that serve as proof of imWheat's shitty behavior during this time. And serve as a warning for anyone who would think of joining Project Awesome, or any of Wheat's community in the future.
My time in Project Awesome
I joined PA in 2017, when it had just recovered from it's 2nd (or even 3rd) staff walk-out that Wheat caused. At that point, i didn't even know about it's previous reputation or all the shit Wheat pulled before.
Anyway, when i joined PA, I liked it. It was a cool place with cool people, and the Arma 3 missions were fun and relaxed. Eventually, I started making missions for them, creating my own unique style.
Here are a few videos of missions i made and hosted for PA:
Recreation of ShackTac "Operation Mongoose"
Mission with a prerecorded briefing.*
A TvT mission
I pitched in with some other tasks too, such as updating old mission making guide on how to use the customized MURK spawning system, Mission making do's and don'ts and other helpful stuff. I even chipped in nearly donated about $100 to support PA server upkeep.
Anyway, during my time in PA, I received multiple praise from Wheat for helping the community in a positive way, and was even Member of the week once.
The end of PA's 3rd iteration
In 2020, there was another stir in the PA staff. You can find some details here. The PA staff aimed to tweak the direction of the Arma group, but it clashed with Wheat's original vision for how PA's Arma community should run. Interestingly, Wheat, who participated in Arma events, and wasn't familiar with the gameplay or the wishes of the Arma side of PA.
When the conflict proved unsolvable, mainly because Wheat resisted any ideas or suggestions from the staff, the majority of the Arma staff decided to break away and created /r/The_Misfit_Company. Many players, including myself, who enjoyed gaming together in PA, joined them. Despite this, I remained active in the PA Discord for a while. Over time, my involvement decreased, and after about a year, during a Discord cleanup, I chose to part ways and leave the PA Discord.
The /r/JoinSquad incident
In July 2023, there was a huge drama going on the /r/JoinSquad subreddit that Wheat is the headmod off.
The details can be read in this Subreddit-Drama post, this video by MoiDawg, or this Google Document
In summary, Wheat updated auto-mod to recruit for Project Awesome on the (un)official Squad subreddit, violating three of its own subreddit rules. This move received a strongly negative reaction from the subreddit. Additionally, various words like "Wheat," "Discord," "Banned," and "PA" were restricted in comments or posts. The situation turned chaotic, with JoinSquad facing attacks from MoiDawg fanboys and possible brigading from users on /r/subredditdrama
My initial & undeserved ban from Project Awesome Discord
I decided to check up on the Project Awesome Discord how things were going there. I already saw some posts on the new /r/PlaySquad subreddit where people making "Speedruns to get banned from PA" so i expected it to a shitshow there too. But to my surprise, it was rather….okay. There was a written statement posted on the General Chat by one of the Discord mods distancing themselves from the actions of Wheat.
Now, the following is what led to my ban. I, being a former member of PA, felt compelled to share my perspective on the situation, believing that others might value the insights of someone who was part of PA for several years and had numerous conversations with Wheat. In the General chat, I conveyed the following three points
Wheat recruiting was always good for PA and always made sure that PA had quite a lot of members
However, using JoinSquad to recruit for PA is not the way to do it
Removing comments with certain words in them however, is fucking childish
Within a minute of posting this message, I found myself instantly banned from the Discord. No warning, no private message, and no indication of the reason behind the ban—just an instant removal from the Discord server.
My initial thought that the moderator who banned was someone that didn't know me, and just saw a NEW tag next to my Discord name, and assumed I was another troll, looking to cause trouble. This was of course not the case.
My appeal - Part 1 - ProjectAwesome Modmail
So instantly tried to contact Wheat on Discord PM to ask why I was banned. Certainly with my history in PA this was a mistake. I did the same on /r/ProjectAwesome modmail, to see if i could get a faster reply. Maybe from the mod who banned me himself.
The first one to reply was someone on the PA modmail. He didn't use his name, so i have no idea who responded.
The entire conversation can be read here
Basically, this mod says the reason I was banned was because I was hostile (by saying "fucking childish"), but later apologizes to me and says that the ban will be removed. And if I have any issues with Wheat should be directly said to him, and not the PA Discord.
My appeal - Part 2 - Discord DM with Wheat
After this conversation with the mod, Wheat responded on my DM in Discord.
The entire conversation can be read here
Wheat says he has no issue with unbanning me, but concludes that the only reason i rejoined the PA discord was just to bash on him. I say this was not the case, and that what i said wasn't worth an instant-permaban.
3 Days later
I noticed that my ban wasn't removed yet, so i PM Wheat again, asking why. Suddenly, Wheat informs me that he talked with the Discord mods and they do not want to reverse the ban, and that he doesn't want to go "against his team". He tells me to appeal to them directly and they will be reasonable.
Screenshot here (Part 1)
After I tell Wheat i already did contact them, there was a sudden change in his way of speaking. Suddenly, he was trying to find any excuse or any reason to justify the banned.
First he tries to get me to show my first appeal, suggesting that I was aggressive in that one. He can easily find that appeal himself since it was in the PA Subreddit Modmail, but he asks me to show a screenshot of it. Then he tries to catch me in a lie, saying that the mod in the PA Modmail told me to contact him.
Screenshot here (Part 2)
Then came an interesting part. Wheat, in again an attempt to try to justify the ban, says he will look up the original message i wrote that got me banned. I say I can recite the message that got me banned, and Wheat says: "If that's the exact message you wrote, you'll be unbanned.
So now I have two confirmations that my ban will be removed. From the PA Modmail, and from Wheat himself. Great right?
Screenshot here (Part 3)
Wheat then shows me some screenshot of other people, writing more hostile messages in the Discord that didn't got banned, so he expected me that I wrote something horrible.
This is also great for me…because what I said was not as nearly as hostile as the screenshots he shows me.
Screenshot here (Part 4)
Then there was a final attempt to find an excuse to justify the ban, by asking me what a deleted post was from the PA Subreddit. I told him that it was nothing, and it was simply the same question why I was banned, but I deleted it almost instantly and messaged Modmail instead. I asked him to stop looking for an excuse, because there simply isn't any.
Screenshot here (Part 5)
This was the end of the conversation with Wheat. I went on a short holiday to Las Vegas afterwards.
Wheat's decision to uphold the ban
After I returned from Las Vegas, i noticed I didn't receive a reply yet. So, i open the reddit modmail message and ask "Why is taking the removal of my ban so long". What followed was the following message from Wheat himself:
The way you talked to the team wasn't quite the way you explained it on Discord. Whether you meant it or not, you came across as combative and impossible to reason with. I've known you for a while and haven't seen this from you before but for whatever reason, you really came across as an ass. I know a lot of people on the internet might think I'm "Wheatler" and I'm going to do what I want but I listen to my team and work closely with them to build communities that others benefit from. If they think you shouldn't be unbanned, I'm going to listen to them and that's what I've done. It's also what I've explained to you in Discord DMs. It's possible you can be unbanned in the future but the way you talk to others (not me) matter and it will take time before anyone here wants to give you another chance. If it's worth it to you to wait, let your response to this message reflect that.
Screenshot of message here
This was absolute bullshit. First of all, both Wheat, and the PA modmail say that I will be unbanned. Then suddenly, there is a 180 on that decision because somehow, I wrote "combative" messages to the team.
So i demand an explanation.
At the same time, i also asked it directly to Wheat on Discord. Trying to get him into a Voice Call whenever he was online (which he of course refused to answer).
Screenshot here
Contacting other mods
Since Wheat stated that it was a vote by the other mods, i tried to contact them. I first contacted two mods in PA that was still on good terms with and had in my Discord friend list. The first mod however, stated that he didn't even know I was banned, and isn't involved in the politics of running PA.
Screenshot here
The second mod of PA also tells me he wasn't involved in my ban or the vote either.
Screenshot here
The third mod, which i had to add as a friend on Discord first before i could contact him, was involved in my ban and finally gives me some additional info. He tells me that the reason my ban will not be removed is because of a comment I wrote on the /r/PlaySquad subreddit. Specifically this comment where I explained that I was banned from PA for giving a simple opinion, and then concluded that PA screwed me over despite my positive contributions to the community. This was however misread as "Screw PA", instead of "Screw Nyte".
Screenshot here
The mod further explained that he voted to only ban me for 1 week. I explain that Wheat (initially) wanted to unban me. Finally, the mod says that I should continue on the PA modmail again. Our PM's stopped after this.
Screenshot here
I turn back to Wheat's DM and also explain that the "Screw PA" was misread. However, Wheat had at this point removed me from his Discord friend list, so he wouldn't receive my messages anymore.
Screenshot here
The accidental "Reddit mute"
So, things got messy here. First of all, i received a temporary mute from PA modmail. Which send me into a bit of a frenzy. Since Wheat had removed me from Discord, i send him a Reddit PM with "Are you fucking kidding me". He quickly explains that it was a misclick, and that I should stop PMing everyone because I am annoying them, which was a lie because there was only one mod I was talking too, and we already closed our conversation at that point.
Screenshot here
At the same time, Wheat also responded in the Modmail that the mute was accidental, and that he would respond later.
Screenshot here
I record a video
At this point, I was pretty fed up with the situation. Wheat was being extremely difficult for no good reason. He was lying and manipulative, and tried his best to justify the ban by baiting me into being hostile. And i think he kind of succeeded with the "accidental" mute.
At this point, i record a video on my webcam with a message to Wheat to say…. "Don't bother…". There was no way that, even after i would get unbanned, i would be on good terms with Wheat again. Even though there was a short moment before the ban that made me think playing Arma with PA again, Wheat destroyed any trust I had for him, or that PA was an enjoyable community with him on the helm.
The video is currently private, but here is the transcript of it:
You know what Wheat. Don't bother anymore. Don't bother removing the ban because frankly, I don't even care anymore. I'm done wasting my energy on this situation. You've shown to me that you are unwilling. UNWILLING to help me out. You tried multiple times to find some sort of justification to uphold the ban. And there weren't any. There was no reason at all to justify the ban. And you continue to keep giving me these bullshit reasons. I was banned, simply because the Discord had a moment that it was flooded with trolls, and i gave my opinion on the situation at a bad time. Whoever banned me saw this NEW tag on my name, and removed me for something that wasn't even worth a warning. A comment maybe. A comment like "Hey Nyte, we don't want to discuss this topic here so please stop bringint it up" But no. Your incompetent mod insta banned me. I was just caught in the crossfire of some trolls flooding your server. And to think that i defended you on the Squad subreddit. To think i reported every post about "fuck wheat" and called out every brigading dipshit coming from the Subredditdrama subreddit or from MoiDawg's video. I never had a problem with you Wheat. I was never part of the Arma staff back when the split happened, so i have nothing against you. The only reason i joined Misfit Company was because everyone I enjoyed playing Arma with all left to join Misfit And I enjoyed playing with those people. They made playing in PA fun for me so I joined them too. But, I still stayed in the PA Discord for a long time. I still replied in the Arma channels and mission making channels now and then. For me, there were no ill feelings towards PA. But, eventually i used the PA Discord less and less. And one day when i decided to clean up some servers, PA was simply one of them. But then came the shitshow at the Squad subreddit, and I decided to check on the PA Discord. I imagined it was a shitshow there too, but it was pretty mild, at least when I joined. Quagmire had just posted a statement in the General chat about the situation and i thought, i will give me own opinion about the whole ordeal. Maybe some words from an old member has some value. And even at that point, when I joined. I felt a bit of nostalgia. I was even considering being more active in PA again. Play some Arma again. I still have some unplayed missions ready that I could host. And while i was typing that typing something like "Hey, i got some ready-to-play missions I could host…" I got banned. No warning. No reasoning. No nothing. And that was a major kick in my balls. And then when i tried to get answers, try to reason with you. Try to explain the situation. That there was no ill will at play at all. You just kept giving me bullshit. Over and over again. It's honestly disgusting Wheat. You are the founder of PA, and you could have vouched for me. You could have brought up all that I did in favour of PA. But it meant nothing to you. You said "Screw Nyte" and you and your mods have said it clearly over and over again. So considered that bridge burned. Even if you still decide to remove the ban. And at this point, you will most likely won't I will NEVER return to PA Because you have a shitty mod team. And you have shown that you are a shitty person.
The final judgement
Even though i recorded the video, i withheld it from sending it to Wheat, having a sliver of hope that the ban would still be undone. Despite I already set my mind that I would not return to PA ever.
Then I received the following message from Wheat, putting the final nail in the coffin.
I thought about it and I really don't have the energy to continue this conversation. I trust the mods that removed you and based on how you've acted since you were banned makes me not want to have to deal with you again. If you come back in the future calmer and more reasonable, I'd be willing to have that conversation but we're at a point right now where people are having to block you on Discord because you keep asking about your ban. You've been told why you were banned and that message on r/Playsquad really had no bearing on why it's not being removed. You're acting like you deserve to be in that Discord. Like we're taking away your rights to complain to people that don't want to hear it. It does NO ONE any good unbanning you at this point because we have no reason to think you have any interest in actually being in our community. You know PA. Have you ever seen us let people come to our Discord and give others a hard time? You might say, "But Wheat, you shared your Discord server and you shouldn't have", etc, etc. I shouldn't have done that the way I did. It's over. People have had their say. The Discord link is no longer being shared in posts on r/joinsquad. I won't be responding to this post anymore and if you get rude, I'm just going to mute it. I've answered enough of your questions that at this point, you should understand. Sorry dude.
Screenshot here
At that point, i send him the video, and made a final message, proving every point he made in his message wrong
Screenshot of my reply
This reply ended up giving me another mute to the PA modmail. Which made me decide to post my video in the /r/ProjectAwesome subreddit for everyone to see. But it was removed within a few minutes, earning me a permaban from the subreddit.
Update 22 December 2023
/u/imWheat finally banned me from /r/Joinsquad for this post for "breaking community rules" without any further explanation or reasoning. I knew he was just waiting for any excuse to permaban me from Joinsquad, and I guess he just found one.
Update 22 December 2023 - 2
Here's proof that imWheat wanted to have me banned from the /r/Joinsquad subreddit from the start. Also, the fact he's making up shit like "He's reaching out to my family" is a very sad attempt to get people on his side.
Update 1 January 2024
In another "conversation" with Wheat, he now shares that he accuses me of sending emails to his mother, signed with "Nyteman" as the only form of evidence.
Afterwards, he threatens me with trying to get my reddit account banned and contacting my local authorities.
Update 2 January 2024
I have reported Wheats threats to Reddit, and he received a Reddit ban for it. My 2024 started off great
Update 16 January 2024
Sadly, it was only a 2 week ban. Shame. Because he deserves to be permanently removed from Reddit
Update 4 February 2024
Speculation ahead: So, my Reddit account and LinkedIn account were getting regularly "FORGOT PASSWORD" and "1 TIME LOGIN LINK" mails lately. LinkedIn however, shows where this request was made, and interestingly enough, they always came from Cincinnati in the U.S. On a hunch, i decided to check imWheat's account with RedditMetis, and i found an old comment from the /r/cincinatti subreddit, where he wrote that he was planning to move there.
When I confronted him with this… he immediately nuked his entire Reddit account, deleting all his comments and posts. I'm not saying he's actually doing it, but nuking your entire account for that is SUS AS FUCK
Update, 8-9 February 2024 - Wheat wants to negotiate
In a sudden move, i receive a PM from Wheat. He wants me to remove this post because it makes him look like the bad guy (no shit), but also because in the last update, i was hinting where he was living.
I decided to accept and tell him one more time what i want: Remove ALL my bans (PA Discord, Subreddit and JoinSquad), and will remove this post. I even tried to explain to him that I never had bad intentions in mind when i was to be unbanned.
Wheat replies that he can unban me from /r/JoinSquad, but will only unban me from the PA if I promise not to join it, or take part in PA activities. Stating that if he will unban me, the current PA staff will leave the community. This is of course no different than a ban, but I'm willing to help if it will remove the bans.
Screenshot here
So, despite I feel that i shouldn't even need to do this, I decided to write a super formal ban appeal on the /r/ProjectAwesome modmail. Explaining that it was just unfortunate circumstances, and that my initial ban appeal was mostly fuelled by emotions for being banned from a community i used to love.
Screenshot of my appeal here
A few hours later, i receive the following reply from /u/Tenebo, who is hiding his name. (I know who banned me because of inside info from one PA moderator, who was still on my side)
We say no and have no intention to ever change that stance. ~ Signed, the rest of the Project Awesome team. Typed by the person who initially banned you.
I ask to elaborate
We don't want anyone in PA who harasses people. The fact this has been going on for months and you're still updating your reddit post shows us that you're not someone we want there. The obsession is quite worrying. As you have said in your final judgement, you have already set your mind that I would not return to PA ever. We do not intend to remove the ban.
Screenshot here
Given that the PA moderators do not want to unban me, i return to Wheat and give him the following choice:
Remove my /r/JoinSquad ban, and i will remove all updates since 22 December
Remove ALL my bans, and tell your mod team to suck it, and i will remove this post
Wheat replies, saying that he can't do either. He points to the text of my video from 6 months ago, where I stated that I will never return to PA, and that it doesn't make sense that I still want to be unbanned. Well true, i will never return to PA after what happened, i simply want my bans removed.
Screenshot here
My final message to him was: "Goodbye Wheat"
and i blocked him
Update, 19 February 2024 - Wheat steps down as headmods on all his subs
Still another update. So, Wheat seems to have stepped down as headmods of all the subs he was moderating. He's still mod at /u/FindAUnit, but he's not the headmod there. I'm currently still muted in the /r/JoinSquad modmail, but i will see if they will unban me.
Update, 13 March 2024
And i'm unbanned from /r/Joinsquad. I had to wait till Wheat's mute expired, but after messaging the new mods, the ban was instantly removed.

I have a pretty un popular belief about inkwells and now the understanding of them that I’m seeing ore on the Internet, more specifically on YouTube. I think that it is needed to understand and try to learn more about the world they live in, the way they view life, their prior experiences with socialization as a whole because even though they focus on not having relationships with women- many of these men just don’t have ANY friends at all. They don’t have a social life at all, which explains part of the reason as to why they’ve never been or are not good with women.
However, throughout the various black pill channels that I’ve watched and frequented, I’ve noticed that the men either constantly bring the topic BACK to women, or they un-unanimously blame women for many of their issues. (Movies, video games, work, travel, etc) Many of these men really do believe that women are some sort of soul sucking/crushing species that should be eradicated due to their “selfish nature”. I doubt that most of these men would ever do anything to hurt anyone in real life, because most of them aren’t gun enthusiasts, or men who take care of themselves physically- because they believe that there’s no point, they're just simply very frustrated and angry at the cards they’ve been dealt in the looks department and oddly, there’s a part of me that feels bad for them. I can’t imagine how much can be done for their situation. No one can make anyone else attracted to them, or give them a ‘chance’. I also notice that a lot of these men don’t even focus on having friends or a decent social circle. I’ve never heard of any of them trying to meet up in real life and hang out- without talking about women or sex. It would be a good chance for them to have a social release, and form connections with other people.
Lastly, I notice that any kind of help or advice that’s offered to them is immediately shut down. These people are VERY set in their ways, and they aren’t changing anytime soon. I’ve read comments from people encouraging that they find new hobbies and activities to do in the real world where they can make some new friends- and have watched those ideas immediately receive hostile responses. One man in particular, said that hobbies aren’t what men need, apparently, “S3x (Ofc sex is placed first), violence, and protecting” is what men need in life, and then he ended his weird paragraph by saying that “modern day feminists have ruined that for men.” So another angry man upset that he doesn’t have the 1950s family man fantasy.

Hellstar Unveiling the Cosmic Horror of the Universe
In the realm of cosmic horror, few entities evoke as much dread and fascination as Hellstar. This enigmatic figure looms large in both ancient mythologies and modern media, representing the ultimate fear of the unknown. Hellstar embodies the existential terror of a universe that is vast, indifferent, and filled with malevolent forces beyond human comprehension. In this blog post, we will delve into the origins, cultural impact, and enduring allure of Hellstar, exploring why this cosmic horror continues to captivate and terrify audiences worldwide.
Origins of Hellstar
The concept of Hellstar can be traced back to ancient civilizations that gazed at the night sky and saw not just stars, but omens and deities. Early human cultures often imbued celestial bodies with divine or demonic characteristics, interpreting their movements and appearances as messages from the gods. Hell Star Sweater, in many of these traditions, was seen as a harbinger of doom, a celestial being whose presence foretold catastrophe and chaos. In Mesopotamian mythology, for example, there are references to malevolent stars and constellations that were believed to bring misfortune. Similarly, in ancient Chinese astronomy, certain stars were considered inauspicious, often associated with calamities. These early beliefs laid the groundwork for the concept of Hellstar as a cosmic force of evil and destruction.
Hellstar in Modern Media
The modern interpretation of Hellstar owes much to the works of early 20th-century writers like H.P. Lovecraft, who pioneered the genre of cosmic horror. Lovecraft's stories introduced readers to a universe filled with ancient, god-like beings whose very existence posed a threat to human sanity and existence. Hellstar fits neatly into this tradition, embodying the idea that the cosmos is not just indifferent, but actively hostile to humanity. In contemporary literature, Hellstar has been featured in numerous novels and short stories, often as a malevolent force lurking in the depths of space. These narratives typically explore themes of isolation, madness, and the insignificance of humanity in the grand scheme of the universe. The allure of Hellstar lies in its ability to evoke a profound sense of existential dread, reminding us that there are forces in the universe far beyond our control or understanding.
Hellstar in Popular Culture
Beyond literature, Hellstar has made its mark in various forms of popular culture, including movies, television shows, and video games. One notable example is the 2019 film "The Color Out of Space," based on Lovecraft's short story. The film features a malevolent extraterrestrial presence that brings madness and mutation to a rural farm, echoing the themes of cosmic horror associated with Hellstar. In the realm of video games, titles like "Dead Space" and "Bloodborne" have incorporated elements of cosmic horror, with Hellstar-like entities playing central roles in their narratives. These games immerse players in dark, foreboding worlds where the line between reality and madness is blurred, and the threat of cosmic malevolence is ever-present.
Psychological Impact of Hellstar
One of the reasons Hellstar resonates so deeply with audiences is its ability to tap into fundamental human fears. At its core, Hellstar represents the unknown, the unfathomable, and the uncontrollable. These are fears that have been hardwired into the human psyche since our earliest ancestors huddled around campfires, trying to make sense of a world filled with predators and dangers. Hellstar also embodies the fear of our own insignificance. In a universe that is billions of years old and incomprehensibly vast, the idea that we are not the center of creation can be deeply unsettling. Hellstar, as a cosmic horror, forces us to confront the possibility that we are mere specks in an uncaring and hostile universe.
Hellstar and the Future of Cosmic Horror
As we look to the future, it is clear that Hellstar and the broader genre of cosmic horror will continue to evolve. Advances in science and technology, particularly in our understanding of the universe, will undoubtedly inspire new stories and interpretations of Hellstar. As we explore further into space and uncover more of its mysteries, the line between science fiction and horror will blur even further. One potential direction for the evolution of Hellstar is the incorporation of real astronomical phenomena into its mythology. For instance, the concept of rogue planets—planets that drift through space without a parent star—could provide a new twist on the Hellstar legend. These lonely, wandering worlds could be seen as the physical manifestation of Hellstar, bringing destruction wherever they go.
Conclusion
Hellstar stands as a powerful symbol of cosmic horror, embodying the fear of the unknown and the existential dread of our place in the universe. From its ancient origins in human mythology to its modern incarnations in literature and popular culture, Hellstar continues to captivate and terrify audiences. As we continue to explore the cosmos and confront the mysteries it holds, the legend of Hellstar will undoubtedly endure, reminding us of the vast, unfathomable forces that lie beyond our comprehension. In the end, Hellstar serves as a poignant reminder that the universe is not just a place of wonder and discovery, but also a realm of darkness and fear. It is this duality that makes Hellstar such a compelling and enduring figure in the annals of cosmic horror. Whether encountered in the pages of a book, on the screen, or in the depths of our own imaginations, Hellstar will always be there, lurking in the shadows, waiting to remind us of the vast, terrifying unknown.

class presentation
I Interviewed people who are playing borderlands across many different platforms and in different countries
Started chatting publicly within general chat on their servers, but after the first interview, the second interviewee suggested moving to private dm. this proved to be more secure and people were more relaxed about talking at length.
Results;
Borderland is an action role-playing first-person looter shooter video game franchise set in a space Western science fantasy setting, it can be described as located in rough almost post apocalyptic landscapes with bandits who have malicious psychotic intent which can appear quite comedic.
it was interesting to note that everyone played for the same reasons
everyone feels that the game is basically a good game, the majority of the game was the same experience, but what a player could do was to individualize the game in a minor way to suit their style, but the core of the game remained the same.
It was a good game because:
Well crafted
Content was interesting
Fun
Graphics were good
Good writing
Complexity that continues to be a challenge and can be taken from many angles
There was consensus in the quality of the game and why people played it but what was interesting was the differences in the servers and the communities on which the game was played. It was interesting to notice the differences between the servers that I was sourcing for interviews, it ranged from
veterans server, who had very clear precise strict rules
corporately owned official server that was very safe and kid friendly, very moderated, but sterile, appears to cater towards the public audience rather than the most dedicated of fans.
Community made server, which was the oldest server, and the most dedicated to playing the borderland games, having server roles and rooms specific to the type of hardware and specific game you owned
The pond server, generalist to games and dedicated to weed, this server is catered for gamers who played extensively long duration of hours, the rules were unspecified and exceptionally relaxed.
Roleplay servers (many), I played around with the idea of playing a character as the interviewer in-world so as to not impose, but felt that even if I did my best the information obtained might not be honest.
Borderlands
Observation of the servers communities in relation to the game
The veteran server was very populated a lot of the time, having most of their server people online. I never ended up posting in this as I felt it not my place to do so, I was not the target audience.
The official server was fast paced with every person chatting 1-3 words at a time in fast succession, not as welcoming feeling as the others, but this was the only place I explicitly had someone tell me “cos bad” to shut down any conversation. The few people I saw here felt younger than those I interacted with on other servers.
Oldest community made server, here there was a well structured system organizing the players with the most active people playing the game and pinging for questions.
Smaller community made server, much more laid back, this one had a complicated rule procedure that many didn’t ever seem to figure out, and if the person didn’t go through that procedure everyone could tell that they hadn’t read the rules yet, if the person didn’t complete it within a certain timeframe then they would be kicked from the server, this lead people to be more hostile to anyone yet to go through with said procedure but welcoming to those who did bother to figure it out.
The pond, a weed server filled with very free individuals
Roleplay servers that I never entered
a helping server that someone else had asked for an interview prior in, this one I got no reply from, but the owner seemed very welcoming however dead the small server was, I did get an immediate message welcoming me but they seemed to be a single person server.

Research
- Research on alike/similar games to my idea
Elite: Dangerous
Elite Dangerous, the modern sequel to its classic predecessor, Elite (1984), is a space flight simulation game developed and published by Frontier Developments. It was released on the 16th of December 2014. In the game, the player takes the role of a pilot / commander of a spaceship that allows them to engage and explore a realistic 1:1 scale open-world representation of the Milky Way galaxy, with the game play being very open-ended and free.
The player can choose to do anything from exploration & commercial passenger flying, to trading & mining, to combat, bounty hunting and pirating and much more in between. Money earned from activities can be spent on buying upgrades, weapons, equipment, engineering perks and new ships for the player in a progressive upgrade system similar to what I potentially want to implement into my game on a lesser scale should I have time. The game as a general is set from the cockpit of a ship, in a 1st person perspective, with the player being able to manoeuvre the ship along the standard 6 degrees of freedom in physics.
The game also features a in-game fictional war against an biological based, insectoid alien race known as the Thargoids with much of it’s current story / events revolving around hostile engagement with these aliens. These aliens are heavily bio / organic themed using a mixture of bio rock / green substances in their design / appearance and commonly inhabiting areas of green gas / alien inhabitation zones. This game is probably my main inspiration for my own game that I am creating of current.

for those who might need a screen readers or cannot access the images here's the text from each image
image description [First off, Sarah’s handling of ML issues have always been poor. Toxic MLs were left unchecked. As a mentor I had several mentees who were being bullied and abused by their co-MLs. As did other mentors. When we urged them to contact Sarah, when we warned her ourselves, the bullied MLs were told to get along or ignore it. “Mediation” happened that boiled down to “just play nice everyone”. The abusive MLs were allowed to stay, no consequences, no oversight. Often ending in passionate hard working MLs dropping out because they could no longer take it. Leaving the bullies in their place.
At least twice I had wrimos contact me about their region being run into the ground. When I put them in touch with Sarah, HQ’s answer was “just organise your own events and apply to be a co-ML for your region next year”. Co-ML. Not replacement ML. They were expected to work with someone who had proven to be unreasonable and tyrannical.
Mentors who pushed too hard for Sarah to step in got a verbal smack down and forevermore no longer got direct answers if it could be avoided or any reply would be underlined by hostility. Once more pushing good people to quit because they felt severely impacted by how HQ treated them.
Criticism of HQ and NaNo were not allowed. While the rules did not state MLs and mods could not have a dissenting opinion, that is how they were carried out. Mention any even mildly frustrated opinion on the forums at large and you would get a reprimand and your post deleted. Even on the ML forums behind closed doors it was barely allowed. Often meeting with ire and closed threads. Or direct orders to play nice or get out.
In fact in my entire time I was active. The only time an ML was depowered was if they directly insulted HQ or Sarah herself, often rather mildly I might add. MLs who were toxic, who were proven not to have even looked at their region all month were left to return the next year. But “insult” staff and you were out the door within the hour. Either with no explanation to the rest of us or with the cookie cutter “we decided they were no longer suited to the task”. With a very clear unspoken vibe of, if you are seen defending them you could be next.
IF YOU READ NOTHING OF THIS POST, READ THIS. Lastly I’ll go into the mentioned PR nightmare. TW for terrorism and bombings. If either of those topics upset you please skip the next bit. For everyone else
The Ivan the Icy incident. In 2017 the staff decided to roll out an in-office game they had apparently played amongst themselves to the wider public.
This game was a treasure hunt type activity, where one had to stop a terrorist called Ivan the Icy from blowing up NaNo and the world.
This hunt included a now removed video of a very convincingly dressed man monologue at the camera about how he was going to bomb NaNo. So convincing in fact it took very long into the video before signs of it being fake emerged.
Several faked emails sent to you, in that same vein that eventually led to a hidden page on the site where you had to disarm a bomb. Failing to do so would make it explode. Granted, upon exploding it filled your screen with penguins, but until then it was far too realistic.
Some key points
This was not communicated to MLs prior to sending out. Nothing had been mentioned. If it had we could have told them why this was a bad idea. The game might work in office where everyone knows each other’s sensitivities and humour (although even then one can wonder why this topic), but on a global scale this is tone deaf at best.
MLs were the ones who raised the alarm and contacted HQ as quickly as we noticed. We had to explain in detail the potential ramifications, after which action was taken. We then helped NaNo cover this up. (Something I’ve often wondered if it was the right thing to do.)
Note that at this point we had already lost so much faith in HQ that we were actively brainstorming how we could potentially flag it to youtube and facebook to get the video taken down if HQ would not respond to us as they often didn’t.
. To explain just how tone deaf this game was.
The very convincing video was posted (not used) on 9/11.
This was the year after the bombing in Brussels during NaNo. Two years after the bombing and shootings in Paris that had the Parisian Wrimos stuck in a write-in near the bomb site and active shooters for hours. And the same year a bomb had been detonated in the Manchester arena.
After it was taken down, HQ barely offered an apology. The ML “apology” of which I have records, was one paragraph in an entire mail about donation day. There was also the offer to voice our feelings as MLs to HQ via video call. But the times offered were that very same evening. Meaning few could free up time on such short notice. Me and several others did, culminating in us offering to write them a comprehensive document with suggestions and ideas and point out problems.]
