Protect Me

While you're out with the ghoul of your choice, something happens that scares you, causing you to turn and cling to him. How would he react, knowing he's the person you automatically turn to knowing he'll keep you safe?

Featuring: Ritsu | Tohma | Alan | Lyca

Tohma Ishibashi - You were following alongside Tohma and Jin on your current mission. Your group had split up, Luca and Kaito going one way, while you followed along with the king and his advisor.

The lights around you were dim, and you had an uneasy feeling that just kept growing the further you walked. You desperately wanted to reach out and hold onto Tohma's hand, totally not in part because of your massive crush on him, but also just because you wanted some reassurance and physical comfort.

As you went, a loud crash sounded from your one side, and the lights suddenly went out completely. You screamed, startled by it all, and moved quickly, latching onto Tohma where you knew he'd been and clinging to him.

The lights soon flickered back on, revealing a pissed looking Jin standing by a breaker switch watching you as you clung tightly to Tohma, your arms wrapped around the advisor. Tohma was looking at you with an amused expression.

Once Jin stormed off and you were certain you were safe, you slowly let go of Tohma. "I'm so sorry." You apologized.

"No need to apologize. You were frightened and seeking someone to protect you. Though I wonder, why not go for our king to protect you?" He asked, an amused expression flickering across his features.

You shrugged and couldn't quite meet his gaze as you replied. "I feel far safer with you, and I knew you'd protect me."

He gave you a knowing smile and offered you one of his hands to take. "My dear, you are correct. I will always protect you should you require it. Now, let's catch up to the king, shall we?"

Lyca Colt - You were following Lyca through the woods surrounding the area you'd gone to investigate after reports of anomalies. He seemed to be following the scent of something.

"Lyca, are you sure it's safe to be here?" You asked nervously as you glanced around.

"Yeah, it'll be okay." Lyca replied, pausing to look around.

You were still nervous. Rui had warned the two of you to be cautious, so when you'd seen Lyca suddenly race off, you'd scrambled to follow after him, not wanting to leave him alone.

A sudden rustling of bushes near you had you jumping and grabbing onto Lyca's arm. Lyca glanced down at you briefly before shifting you so you were behind him and away from the bush. He started to growl, at least until what was in the bushes got through.

You let out a sigh of relief at the sight of Rui. "Ah! There you two are! You shouldn't run off like that. Come on, we'll go back to Darkwick for the night."

You relaxed and slowly let go of Lyca's arm. "Sorry about that." You apologized.

"For what?"

"For clinging to you. I just got scared, and I knew you'd protect me."

"Of course I'd protect you." Lyca huffed, as if offended at the idea that he wouldn't keep you safe. "I'll keep you safer than that dumb gigalo ever will."

Alan Mido - You were following behind Alan as he and Leo made their way along the dark path. The three of you were investigating after an anomaly, and you were anxious.

The area you were in was dark with lots of empty, dark abandoned rooms around. You were scared something was going to suddenly appear and grab you.

You longed to just cling to Alan, trusting him to keep you safe, but you also knew you'd never live it down if Leo actually saw you do that.

Suddenly, a loud sound came from ahead of you all. It started to get louder and closer sounding, and in your panic, you rushed to Alan and wrapped your arms around him. He tensed up, weither from your touch or the sound you didn't know, too nervous to think of much.

The sound grew even louder, before it suddenly fell silent. You dared peek out from where you'd been hiding your face in Alan's side to see an out of breath Sho getting interrogated by Leo. Oh, looks like you freaked out over nothing.

You face heated with embarrassment as you let go of Alan. "I'm so sorry."

"Are you okay?" Alan checked.

"Yeah, just embarrassed I clung to you like that. I was just scared and I knew you'd keep me safe."

Alan gave you a small smile. "Yeah. I'll keep you safe, I promise."

Ritsu Shinjo - You were with Ritsu, following alongside him as the two of you looked for clues of an anomaly that you were hunting for.

You'd both split off from Taiga and Romeo at the latter's command. You had followed the lawyer into an abandoned warehous, and it was setting you on edge. Every step creaked as the worn down broken building was practically falling apart around you.

You felt like you could see things moving around every corner, and it was freaking you out more and more.

Suddenly, a loud crash sounded from behind you, and you screamed, reaching out to grab onto Ritsu as he turned. He wrapped an arm around you to maneuver you behind him as he stood ready to face whatever was coming and shield you from it.

"Where are you BB?!" Romeo snapped, coming into view with Taiga lazily strolling behind him. Oh, that sound you heard was just the two of them. You slowly relaxed your grip on Ritsu.

"Sorry about that Ritsu."

"No need to apologize. You were frieghtened and smartly reached out to me for protection, knowing I could keep you safe."

"Still, I'm sorry"

"I will protect you whenever you need. Not only because keeping you safe would win favor for the Laurel Crown, but also because I care for your safety."

Who do you think the ghouls are???

I wrote this out between my trip to work(an hour or so) and my entire shift(three hours) with some breaks between to actually do my job. LET'S SUS THIS OUT TOGETHER KIDS

First thing of note. According to B's Log, this is an Inter-house Squad mission. According to Episode 9 Chapter 1 when they're first introduced, those require no doubling up on house members. This is to ensure that students can be evaluated individually when considering the Laurel Crown's winner in the future.

So there's one ghoul from each house except for one of them. This is important because it means that our guesses, if they're really going to make sense, probably have to conform to that. While it's possible that they break that rule on the second inter-house mission, I kind of doubt it. Nonetheless, my final guess is pretty dependent on that capacity to narrow things down.

Sinostra may be your immediate exclusion because they just had their episode but remember that Sinostra's second episode was the one before the first Inter-House Squad episode, and he lead the Inter-House Squad mission. That means any house is applicable.

While the show is supposed to feature celebrity guests it's important to remember that that doesn't necessarily mean that the ghouls chosen for the mission should be celebrities. Darkwick can and will make shit up to get people where they need them. This means we can't narrow things down based on that.

Finally I saw someone say that we can't rely on the nature of the outfits since there's probably a crew styling them. In real life that might matter but as artistic choices they're much more likely to show the character's nature in their clothes. So I think the clothes are a reasonable thing to examine.

Onto my guesses!!!

First one. Suit is very properly done, even has a tie clip. Hands are hidden, either behind back or leaned on something behind him. My first guesses are Rui and Subaru--covered up and closed off. But the suit is too fancy and decorative for Subaru. Too sparkly. The flowers fit Ruinfor his romantic nature and that Obscuary has a botanical garden and he tends to the garden in Obscuary all the time. Rui's also notably very attractive and could easily be excused as a little known celebrity or upcoming actor or something. While he'd be wary of going on such a mission, I feel like Rui would be a good candidate both for his nature and the power of his scythe, and he might agree to go to ✨win the pc's heart✨ or something(but actually have some other intention.) Almost certain the first ghoul is Rui. If it's not Rui it's Subaru.

I say if not Rui then Subaru because of the closed off and neat outfit and the pose which might be arms behind his back. Very Subaru fitted. Both want to avoid physical contact with others, so it's hard to say.

Others have claimed Towa because of the flower--Towa would never have his clothes so tightly done. He needs freedom, he needs to breathe. Towa may love humans for their fragility now but I don't think he'd tolerate humans fussing over his clothes and trying to keep them all closed up. There's also that they're on an island and surrounded by camera crew and he can't talk during the day--Towa surely wouldn't be nominated for a mission like that. He's too. . .obvious. The pose isn't lacadasical or natural enough either. If he were dressed like that he'd probably look uncomfortable.

I've also seen Ed as the first one and he has a similar loose, sloppy style as Towa most of the time. He's also very fragile in sunlight--and I don't think Darkwick would trust him to be on a mission with cameras either, and if sunlight can either kill him with extended exposure or weaken him he'd be really obvious on cameras too. . . .

Saw Jiro for the first one too and. Same issue. Jiro's uniform is too sloppy. The pose doesn't fit him either. While he'd probably sit still and let himself be done up cleanly I wonder if such tightly done clothing is safe for his circulation. . . also the character doesn't look big enough? Jiro is very tall and this character doesn't really look that way

Saw Jin as well and. Again. The outfit is too tidy to be Jin. Jin wears his clothes comfortably. Even his masquerade outfit was loosened. The pose doesn't suit him either.

Romeo wears a tie clip like that and wears his uniform neat and closed up and thus comes to mind--I don't know enough about fashion to say whether or not that would fit him though. The pose also doesn't feel confident enough. . .with whatever's going on with his leg I'm not sure he'd want to be on a mission that involves being out on a beach like that or something, not to mention Sinostra's current plans against Hyde. . .he was also in charge of the last one which, on one hand, was kind of a failure so maybe they'd want him to observe how someone else leads the mission. On the other hand would they double up on him? Would he accept another mission so soon after the last one when they're plotting? I'm gonna say it's not him.

Second one. The pose is much more open and loose, although it looks like he's getting out of the limo so it may be that? The suit isn't as fancy as the first one, but it does still have the vest. The bow tie, friendly pose, and simpler outfit of the second ghoul strikes me as Haru. Not really a ton of notes, I don't feel like it really could be anyone else.

My other thought briefly included Luca, whom I've also seen other people guessing. But the skin we do see is too pale--that's a shadow on the neck, not an attempt at a dark skintone. You can tell because the surrounding area also has shadow on it. The suit also doesn't really look like something Luca would wear, or rather it doesn't look the way Luca would wear it. He also doesn't strike me as a bow tie guy. . .and the pose seems too un-serious for him as well.

Towa and Kaito fit the more open pose, but I've already ruled out Towa being on this mission at all(imagine the tempermental romance guy who controls the weather on an island where people are supposed to flirt with one of his favorite people. . .don't think it'd go well.) Kaito I'm ruiling out mostly because I'm certain Jin is also here, so that'd be too many Frostheimers. Also surely he'd be rubbernecking the whole time, unaccustomed to luxury and interested in celebrity stuff as he is. (Although that'd be so cute. . . .)

Ed being the second one. . .honestly, with the way the head is shaded, I can kinda see that if they were going to allow him on the show/he were to agree to go on the mission? Because he'd probably have his umbrella. . .but since I'm pretty sure the first one is Rui that rules out Ed because it'd be too many Obscuary students.

Saw Ren too and. . .honestly I can see him too. The pose is loose enough snd if he's like pulling himself out of the limo or something that'd make sense rather than it being an open, friendly pose. . .Ren is a pretty good guess too I think.

Third makes me pause. That is the exact way Tohma has his handkerchief folded. The looseness doesn't fit Tohma now but Vagastrom Tohma? Maybe. Maybe he'd be letting loose here. The pose feels confident, the style of dress is relaxed, the visible hand is un-gloved, unlike most of Tohma's appearances. The shirt is loosely tucked. Again I also think that another one is Jin. So that'd be too many Frostheim students.

My current guess for the third ghoul is Sho. The loose style and pose kind of suit him. His uniform shirt is loosely half tucked in, so the loose tuck suits him. The chain around the neck also resembles the one Sho wears with his uniform. Sho is physically strong and athletic so the somewhat larger looking size would fit too.

I already explained my doubts on Tohma. But if they're breaking the one-person-per-house rule that would make sense. Although if not for that rule and being certain one of the others is Jin I'd 100% say it's Tohma.

Alan is another great guess. The confidence of the pose could be stiffness/tension. The skin is too light though, unless they're making him look pale. . . .

Saw Taiga and honestly the posture feels Taiga enough to me! Like Taiga when he's in Quiet Mode and just kind of staring at nothing and not saying much and annoyed? The fit is kind of Taiga too, with the loosely tucked in shirt. . . . . Can't see his nails to see if they're painted though. But I think Taiga is a good guess, except I feel like they wouldn't trust Taiga Hoshibami in a situation like this. On the other hand I feel like he'd be great for a 'people are going missing' mission. He already makes people disappear--but also his stigma would be helpful.

Saw someone guess Yuri and. Yuri is definitely too neat of a dresser for it to be him. The outfit completely overrides any other evidence I think.

Ed also fits the sloppiness, but the hands being exposed and ungloved tells me probably not. And my previous points about Ed still stand too. Also the pose isn't. . .dynamic enough for Ed imo.

Man the pose here is a strong one. Loose clothes, jewelry, loosely worn vest. . .it fits a lot of the more slovenly and relaxed characters, but the pose. . .it doesn't fit all of them I think. I think the fourth ghoul is Haku. I think. Maybe. I feel like he kind of doesn't fit the pose tbh, but also kind of does?

Ed would fit here very well. The clothes are a mess and they match the way his uniform was a mess when the pc went into his room. The pose is pretty Ed to me. But I've also explained why I don't think Ed's in this one earlier. If the first isn't Rui this one is definitely Ed I think.

I've already attributed the second one to Haru. And I think the second one could be Ren too, he keeps his uniform surprisingly neat compared to this. He is a good candidate because of the laziness, but the posture doesn't suit him

Taiga would fit the outfit with its looseness and chains(his family name, Hoshibami, also means 'star eater' which also kinda fits the star necklace--Romeo's second name, Scorpius, is also the name of the Scorpio constellation) but less so the pose. Taiga also always has his nails painted and the pinky ring doesn't match the one he always wears. Aside from that I explained my thoughts on Taiga being on this mission already. I kind of feel like they wouldn't want to put Taiga in another mission right after the last one. But they doubled on Romeo in the first inter-house squad, so it's not impossible.

Ritsu fits the pose but not the outfit. God Ritsu would never dress so sloppily.

Same with Yuri.

Same with Tohma.

Same with Romeo--also the pinky ring does not match his either. He has that ring in all of his outfits except the Jade Pavilion one which he didn't choose. I doubt he'd hesitate to flash his style on national television, especially since it seems to be a signet ring so it's a family thing.

I don't think Leo would dress quite as sloppily. He'd have a loose style but the vest is too loose and messy, the shirt feels too loose--a little loose and unbuttoned like it is fits, but it's not stylish looking enough. If it were a touch more orderly I'd consider Leo more likely. Also feels like this one is too broad for Leo.

Sho has a sloppy enough casual style that I could see this as him. But the pose doesn't fit him either I think. . .I guess it'd depend on the expression or situation--I mean all poses are like thst but. If I think too much like that I'll get ahead of myself.

The fifth ghoul is Jin. No questions asked. Aside from the blue shirt it's the pose and the pasty white skin and the open but kind of loosely tucked in shirt. Very obviously Jin to me. If that isn't Jin I will be stunned.

The sixth ghoul is the real toughie. . .but we've only got Sinostra and Mortkranken left for the ghouls. It's definitely not Taiga--too put together--or Romeo--not stylish enough. The pose feels very Ritsu to me, as does how put together the wiole outfit is. Romeo was in the episode before the first inter-house squad so it's not out of the question for Ritsu to be in the episode following the last Sinostra one. He's also the son of a well known lawyer--he'd fit the celebrity vibe to some degree. While at first the character looks wide, I think that's because the left side if the pic is cut, giving an impression of girth. At first I took the car as a clue too, but they're all getting out of the limo from the preview I think. So the car isn't a clue.

It's not Jiro because the clothes are too orderly and the hand doesn't appear to have Jiro's scars. Also Jiro on an island sounds like a medical emergency waiting to happen.

Yuri would be more nervous in a situation like this. . .while the posture of the hand adjusting the tie has a Ritsu feel, I think the sixth ghoul is Yuri. The rest of the posture is hunched over and a little uncertain-looking, seemingly leaned forward rather than stopd upright. While Yuri is very proud and holds himself high and is happy to be admited, he's also very emotive in general and would be out of his element here on top of the nature of the game being about dating/pursuit of/getting the interest of a woman. I feel like the suit isn't stylish enough for him--he seems to have high quality tastes--but I don't know anything about fashion so. Grain of salt or whatever.

While I initially understood the guesses of Alan because of the perceived size and the car part in the background, like I said I think the size is because the pic is cut off and the vehicle is because everyone is getting out of/stood near the limo and some angles show the limo in the bg more clearly. Also the suit seems too tightly wound for Alan.

Same with Tohma as far ss the size theorizing goes.

Same with Sho.

Ren is another good candidate here tbh. Uncertain posture, kind of neat suit. . .but since I already chose Haru as my guess he's not applicable.

Ritsu, while I reslly think fits, I think would be standing taller and more proud than the image appears to be showing. The wrinkles in the vest make me think the person is leaned over. Of course they could still be lesned over from getting out of the limo.

Uuuuh I think that's it for my guesses. But we'll learn in uuuh 5 days!!!!

Ruikasa AU idea:

TLDR: Rui, Tsukasa, and Saki all live in the same village. Tsukasa and Rui were both training to be samurais, but after the death of the two Tenma parents, Tsukasa left to take care of Saki. Rui would go on to become a samurai and later a tactician, while Tsukasa and Saki got by by selling things at their villages market and by helping their elders sell their things.

Things seem fine until the time for harvest approaches. That's when Rui presents a plan for it, a plan where they stop the "tradition" that the elders have held onto for years. A plan that is thrown out in favor of said "tradition" that Rui is unable to stop, leaving him feeling like he's a failure.

It isn't until much later, after their harvest failed to grow and thrive, that he feels a warmth that shouldn't be present. And when he looks at the being before him, looking so familiar, he can't help but hope it's who he thinks it is.

Rui and Tsukasa first meet as students under the same samurai master. Both boys wish to become samurais and make a name for themselves. However, a few months into their lessons, Tsukasa's parents pass away. Leaving him as the only one available to look after his younger sister, Saki. Making the choice to prioritize his younger sister, he leaves his training behind, wishing Rui the best of luck. Perhaps one day they'll meet again. Perhaps one day, Tsukasa will return and learn to be a samurai.

And they do meet again.

The first time they meet again is at a market. Rui is still going strong in his training, and he's happy to see Tsukasa has been doing fine. He and his sister have a small stall they run, selling whatever they can. If they aren't running their own stall, they help one of their elders sell their goods.

The second time they meet is after Rui has become a samurai. He's just started working, but he's already making a name for himself. It's thanks to him that their village is safe.

And if you were to ask Tsukasa, he was a bit envious. But he doesn't regret making the choice he did. He even admits it to Rui during a festival, letting the samurai know he was happy for him, and while he was a bit jealous with how beloved Rui seemed to be, it was ultimately his choice to prioritize Saki over everything else. And he's happy where he is.

After a few years, Rui got approached by the head of his village. His knowledge and wisdom were something he hadn't seen in a long time. His knack for strategy had led them to many victories and kept their village safe. And should he desire to remain a samurai, he could. But it would be an honor if Rui agreed to become the villages tactician. And after a few days of consideration, Rui agreed.

Now, while he is the villages tactician, he doesn't have the final say in things. That goes to the elders, many of whom simply don't like him. They think their leader was insane to hire someone so young.

This becomes moreso evident when Rui begins planning ways to improve their harvest season, throwing away their old tradition:

Human sacrifice.

It was a tradition held for centuries that someone would be chosen to be sacrificed in order for their harvest to thrive. The person chosen would be bound and buried alive, because they believed the sacrifice being alive at the time of their burial would make for a better harvest.

So, when Rui finished his plans and laid them out on the table, having explained why and how this would be better, it was quickly tossed aside. And then he was hit with the news he didn't want to hear. That he didn't want to deliver.

This year's chosen sacrifice was Saki Tenma.

It was devastating news to the siblings when Rui told them. He hoped there would be some way he could get them to stop. To spare her life. But he only had so much time. And with how fast his first plans were rejected, he wasn't sure if they would even listen. He promises, he'll do whatever he can so the siblings can stay together.

But in the end, he doesn't. Because Tsukasa was the one who did something. It was risky. He didn't think about it, but if it meant his sister was safe. That she was alive. That she got to live at least one more year.

If it meant he might never see her or Rui or anyone else again, but it meant they had food, things to sell, he was willing to be this year's sacrifice.

It hurt when the elders told Rui. He didn't want to believe it. Sure, he and Tsukasa hadn't known each other for a long time. Life got in the way. They had to prioritize different things.

But, somehow, someway, they became friends. He can't lose that. There has to be something he can do. Something he can say to get them to change their minds.

He thought of everything with his first plan. Was tradition really that important? It didn't always work. He can remember the days when the village had little food. Their "traditions" did nothing. They had no god to sacrifice to. Any time he asked, he was told nothing. Every bit of research told him nothing.

"Tradition" was just the elders' way of getting away with killing people in the village. That's all it was.

Villages he's visited have had similar "traditions," but they told him who their god's were. A village by the shore would sacrifice live stock to their god. Another near the forest would give their god crops from that year's harvest. A thank you for giving this to us, we are gifting some of what remains to you in hopes you will bless us with more next year.

They considered what their gods wanted. Some wanted fish, some wanted livestock, some wanted fabrics, and some wanted crops. There was no human sacrifice. There was no killing just to kill.

His village had no god he knew of. He thought, he thought that...

In all his time as a samurai and as a tactician, this was the first time Rui felt like a failure. He tried so hard to push for the changes. Tried to argue his points.

But it didn't matter. It didn't matter. He felt stuck as he watched one of the older villagers hold Saki back as she cried and reached for her brother. He couldn't move, despite how much he wanted. To dig deep into his training and pull Tsukasa away from his grave. He couldn't speak when his friend was finally shoved into the grave that had been dug for him. He couldn't do anything as the first of the elders he had fought so hard against shoveled the first bit of dirt into the grave.

And when he finally could move again, when he saw the shovel being handed to him, he ran. He had to leave. To get away. Away from the elders who scorned and threw away his plans to help their village. Away from the girl whose brother he couldn't save. Away from the cries of agony. Away from the grave of his friend be couldn't save.

Tsukasa had told him he trusted him. That he believed in him. He knew Rui would do a good job and would continue to do a good job keeping their village safe.

It was the first time, maybe ever, maybe in a long time, that Rui felt like a failure.

It was very clear to the village that there was a tense relationship between Rui and the village elders. After Tsukasa had been sacrificed for their harvest, they noticed Rui had cut himself off from the elders.

He no longer worked with then, rather he worked directly with the villages leader. While the leader was an elder himself, their relationship was much better than Rui's relationship with the elders.

They saw him enter the Tenma household with food, clothes, and blankets. He had taken over caring for the remaining Tenma.

Saki had holed herself in her home when the sacrifice finished. The girl didn't want anyone to see her. The few who did would see her in front of a shrine she made, praying for her brother's happiness and safety wherever he went.

When it was time for their harvest to grow, nothing happened. Was it because they didn't go for their original sacrifice? Was it because Rui hadn't thrown his bit of dirt in the grave?

They didn't know what to do, and Rui's newfound coldness towards the elders held contempt. And the villagers couldn't help but wonder what they would do.

Rui knew it was petty. People were asking for his help, and he was giving them the cold shoulder. He mainly spoke to the village leader and to Saki when he visited her.

He spent most of his days planning. There wouldn't be another human sacrifice in their village. He wouldn't let someone else die because of "traditions" their elders claim to be true.

He had been working on a new plan when he suddenly felt warm. Like the sun was shining on him, despite the cold weather.

Looking out the window in his room, he could see the sky was still as cloudy as ever. The sun wasn't out, so where was...

And then he saw him. Laying right in front of him.

Glowing in a warm yellow, almost orange, light. His long, golden hair held up in a ponytail. His eyes were so familiar. Horns sat on top of his head.

He looked so familiar.

He was looking at Rui like he knew him.

But... he watched. He, he watched as he died. Was he, is he going insane? Was he really...

But the longer he looked into the beings' eyes, the more and more he was certain this was his friend.

Rui was sure he was going insane, but for now, he was willing to believe Tsukasa had returned.

As for those categories... you are correct but you are also sort of missing the potential for Darkwick to think of this as an opportunity to get a ghoul (or something equivalent to one) who is loyal only to them. Sure, Ed is a horrible choice for a baby daddy, but a sperm donor? If the institute could wrap a dhampir around their fingers they'd do it in a heartbeat. Same with Lyca, would combining werewolf DNA with the Kyklos's curse and your immunity to the mesmer matches make one that could remain sentient during the full moon? I did write a little bit about that concept, where your child is taken away from you and raised as a test subject in the institute. She ends up breaking free as the world is ended by whatever great calamity Darkwick is supposed to be preventing. I could make her murderous, but my mind sort of went towards how 11 is in the first two seasons of Stranger Things. She doesn't really know anything about how she was created, she just knows she hates the institute and doesn't want to be there anymore. The drabble I wrote was about her hunting down the MC because she does understand that a mother is supposed to name you and she doesn't have one. She's angrier about that than anything else, sure she's learning now that humans have families and childhoods, but she's not human now is she? It's hard to let go of that thought when it was drilled into her head from the second she took her first breath.

(Rui and tsukasa can be switched)

-emu is not usualy the one to drive, she’s definitely capable of it and has her license but the group is terrified she’s going to zone out and they will cruise into a ditch when she’s unmedicated. (I believe theirs is thoughts of war behind those big void eyes and therefore she’s the second most dangerous behind rui)

-Nene can drive and usually doesbut she much rather play games and nonverbaly observe conversation, if the others get to tired she’s fine with taking over for a bit, and when she’s down rui usually takes over for her

-Tsukasa can drive and is the third choice driver , boasts about being so good at driving(he failed his driving test twice) then procedes to miss the exit,twice. Rui has to read off the driving app.

-Rui is the second trusted driver of the group ,but his psychopathic ideas make others fear if he is going to stop his impulse of seeing how the airbags work.(hence why tsukasa goes before him) He’s overall good at keeping himself in check tho.

-nene is basically keeping the other three on a leash at all times but she can’t keep them still and gets dragged along

-the amount of times tsukasa and emu have gotten lost in a gas station is impressive, sometimes rui moves the car while there inside to make them think they were left behind.

Met a friend today and she gave me the sekai card au challenge except the first time she chose cards she liked and second time it was totally randomly selected from a folder of cards by whichever she pointed at so here's the results bc why not share:

1)

Tsukasa is a ghost haunting a building where a circus of questionable morals used to perform at after dying while watching one of their performances that went awry. He's determined to put on a show that will clear the infamy this stage has and cause smiles there unlike the circus there did. He thinks this will be what finally frees him from the mortal realm and allow to pass on peacefully. Unfortunately for him, everyone steers clear from the haunted place so nobody ever watches his performances. Everyone is too scared of taking this place down as well, though, so he's trapped in there

That is until he stumbles upon Toya there, who ran away to here to avoid his father who forbids him from singing so thay he can focus on pursuing a career in classical music. He wanted to go to a place nobody was at to sing freely without worrying about what anyone says. Tsukasa and Toya end up bonding over love for performing and being unable to find an audience that would accept them, and end up doing shows together, with Toya's singing and Tsukasa performing. The stage ends up Toya's safe place where he can run away to to rest from the world around him, and Tsukasa finally has an audience – and a companion – for his shows

Rui is a travelling exorcist who's trying to gain more experience and help people out. He had to give up his love for shows in the name of duty after trying to put on performances with humans and ghosts alike that ended up with people getting hurt and him being scolded for associating himself with "evil". He ended up being trained to exorcise ghosts instead even when it felt wrong to him (and he always tries to resolve the conflict without exorcising if the ghost isnt too aggressive). He came across the town where Toya lived and heard the rumours about the old haunted circus and went to check it out

When he saw Tsukasa he at first misinterpreted his behaviour a lot and ended up taking his "invitation for a once-in-a-lifetime-show" as a threat and they ended up chasing each other (tsks trying not to be exorcised bc he found he does want to keep "living" and performing) until Rui was stopped by Toya coming and explaining the truth. Rui is met with the choice between duty as an exorcist – making tsukasa pass on – and the reignited dream he once longed for standing right in front of him. He ends up working on a show together with them in the end, and they manage to put it on a few times with other people from the town coming and seeing it and actually having fun and getting less scared of the place

They manage to clear the bad reputation this place has and actually get people to stop being scared of Tsukasa's ghost, and while Harumichi still doesn't exactly see Toya's choices for singing as the best he let him do what he wants. After finding out that realising Tsukasa's goal didn't make him disappear (to all of their relieves bc they ended up bonding and having fun) but instead simply freed him from being chained to the circus, they set off travelling and performing all over the country as a three for humans and ghosts alike WOOO

Bonus idea maybe they meet up with the tenmas to let tsks reconnect with his lost family and also put on a show for ruis exorcist trainers to show them his dream wasn't in vain or smth idk I won't do anything with this HAHAH

Ena is an artist with an ability to make her drawings come to life, inherited from her father — the thing is, it works only for works she is proud of and considers "worthy" of coming to life. Being a very critical person, as well as not being recognised as an artist by many people around her, she ends up with many failed works and very few moving pieces. It doesn't help that she sees her father's work always moving around the house and feeling discouraged by his constant criticism and comments on how to fix her art

She does, however, befriend and work with An, a local setective who found her skill very useful when they found out if she successfully draws a suspect of a crime or some missing person, the drawings are able to talk for the drawn person and reveal some key information allowing them to find them and solve the case. An admires Ena's art and ability a lot but secretly is jealous and feels useless because she thinks she's only successful in her solved cases thanks to Ena's help, and not her own skill

Meanwhile Nene is Ena's masterpiece who came to life — except Ena was so scared of showing the work to anyone because she was proud of it and considered it besutiful and didn't want anyone to criticise Nene and make her "die" that she hid her away, which in turn made Nene adopt her creator's mindset and became an extremely shy and unconfident person, constantly hiding away in her frame and never really coming out, feeling she's not worthy of being seen and even trying to become something more outside of the canvas

Until one day suddenly, Nene's painting disappears completely. Ena is absolutely devastated — and also in her doubts, feels completely unable to replicate such a masterpiece. With that she is unable to draw Nene again for An to get some pieces of information to help find the painting, making An have to rely only on herself. She takes the challenge and doesn't let herself fail and she DOES manage find Nene, who actually found the courage to come out of the frame and ran to try to find her creator too

It turned out Nene was stolen away by Ena's own Autoportrait that also came to life like Nene. Ena's Autoportrait was one she was deep down very proud of, but her father criticised it and other people as well when she put it on display, and ended up throwing it out as a "failure" despite still feeling like it was good. The portrait came to life because of ena's feelings but ended up jealous of Nene and the fact she was kept, and that the Autoportrait wasn't loved like that. So she stole Nene away too. In the end the Autoportrait just wanted Ena to love her just as Nene — in a way it was just Ena wanting to love herself and her art just because she likes it and not becsuse others do

Ena ends up taking the Autoportrait back to her studio and thanking An for finding both the portrait and Nene. In the end though Nene decides she wants to leave by herself as well and learn about other paintings' stories and maybe forge her own by travelling through art galleries, so Ena finds the courage to send the canvas out to the world to let Nene tour various museums and walk around there, while also earning Ena fame as a bonus. An ends up taking on more cases on her own to get better and not rely too much on Ena anymore and also let her have time to create for herself the enddd

For her part, Anzu was wearing a fairly conservative swimsuit by her own standards - a similar cut and color as the school's offerings, with a skirt, albeit with a deeper neckline that showed off her cleavage. In comparison, Shinobu's choice bore no resemblance at all to what anyone else would wear. Rather, her chest was covered by a dark swimming shirt, with a pair of matching shorts that ended just above her knees. Truthfully, it was still more exposed than she'd prefer, but she didn't approve of the mental image of herself, fully-dressed, while every other girl was wearing a fairly-revealing school swimsuit.

"The last time I attempted that, I was suspended for two weeks," Shinobu deadpanned, prompting Anzu to roll her eyes in response and lightly clap her palm against Shinobu's cheek. "I'm just saying, face, eyes, body go wild." The way she said it made it clear it was some kind of reference Shinobu wasn't getting. "You should show it off! Besides, Sonia-san will be there, and I have it on good authority that she is insane about your abs."

It was Shinobu's turn to scoff. "You have that information on no authority." "Oh, yeah, no, sorry, just my own eyes. Which, will be actually able to see while swimming around, unlike you." With two fingers, she tapped the underside of Shinobu's glasses. "There's no way these were the play, Shinobu-chan." Even without turning to look at her, Shinobu clamped her hand over Anzu's face, giving a light squeeze.

"Ow ow ow ow ow!" "Being unable to see at distance might not be an issue for you, Anzu, but I value my ability to see up close." Shinobu also had very little intention of actually swimming. She looked like a wet dog when soaked, which was not attractive. They'd much prefer to sit off and talk to their classmates. Presumably, Anzu would be less interested in flirting with anyone who moved at an all-girls party, so that accounted for something.

Beyond that, Shinobu wasn't quite sure what to expect. Tsubasa wasn't coming, as they'd assumed, and Ayaka was similarly abstaining. That really only left Sonia and Miss Hanasaki for people she was especially interested in talking to. During her conversation at the coffee shop, she'd been rather cavalier in proclaiming that she'd attend, concerned as she was about Sonia's feelings. Now that she was actually going, however, Shinobu was wondering if she should have stuck to her initial rejection.

Well, it was too late to change her mind now. "Regardless, Miss Nevermind knows that I won't be wearing something so revealing as a school swimsuit." With one final squeeze, she pulled her hand back, Anzu giving an entirely unnecessary 'bweh." "Besides, this is a good look for me - it has aura. I have butch swag, and I'm serving masc realness," she explained, her voice flat. Anzu scrunched up her face, recoiling. "Ew! Where did you learn to talk like that!?"

Having arrived at the entrance to the school pool, Shinobu held the door open for Anzu. "You know that I listen to the words you say, don't you?" Anzu shook her head, giving one little tug at the straps of her swimsuit. "You're not supposed to say them back!" If she had to guess, Shinobu suspected Anzu's distaste was all performative - feeling as though she had to react in some way to her friend's little joke. How very thoughtful of her. "Whatever, I'm gonna go talk to Momo-chan and Rui-kun. Just make sure Sonia-san sees your 'masc realness'."

At that, she departed over towards some of their other classmates. Beyond those two, Shinobu could see that Miss Kamiya and Miss Nakagawa were similarly in attendance. Miss Blue Ink escaped her notice, but Shinobu was sure she was either observing from a safe distance, or simply had yet to arrive. Regarding Sonia's class, Shinobu felt a bit less sure of things. She'd noticed a specific few in the past - Miss Mioda and Miss Owari were the type to command a lot of attention, and she'd heard Miss Nanami's name often enough to remember her. Rather than approach anyone, though, Shinobu found themselves a chair nearer their own class. It was only upon sitting that she noticed Sonia among a small group.

It was enough to nearly make her light-headed, the sudden feeling of blood rushing to her head. Sonia was beautiful, of course - she'd always been beautiful, and Shinobu had noticed that about her on the night they'd met. It was only recently that that beauty had become distracting, but this... Surely it was impossible for someone to be that attractive, wasn't it? Immediately, she tore her eyes away, not wanting her gaze to linger, or worse, wander. Instead, they just looked down to the water, hoping that it might somehow wash away the uncomfortably filthy thoughts in their head.

Chapter snippet: Negotiations in the Shadows

Huang Rui paced back and forth in his study, his footsteps light yet frantic across the wooden floor. The soft glow of candlelight illuminated the bookshelves lining the walls, but they brought no comfort. His thoughts swirled around the empty space where his safe used to be—now reduced to a gaping, jagged hole. He had been robbed, but it wasn’t the loss of money or trinkets that worried him. No, it was his manuscript. His life’s work.

“Who would steal a novel?” He muttered under his breath for the tenth time that evening. A novel! Of all things!

He rubbed his temples, frustration mounting. The publisher had insisted he report the crime to the authorities, but Huang Rui had little faith in them. The police didn’t have time for stolen manuscripts. After all, it was just ink on paper to them.

With a sigh, Huang Rui stopped pacing and collapsed into a plush armchair by the window. He leaned his head back, staring at the darkened ceiling. How had things spiraled so quickly? He was just a simple teacher, an aspiring writer—his only crime being his talent for words.

But words had power, far more than he had realized.

His publisher's voice rang in his ears: "If the police can't solve this, you have one option left—go to him. The King of Hell."

The thought of dealing with an underground gangster felt like throwing himself into a den of wolves, but what choice did he have? He needed the manuscript back before it fell into the wrong hands, or worse, before someone published it under their own name. He wouldn’t let years of work go to waste.

The King of Hell. The name alone sent a shiver down his spine. No one dared to speak of him openly, except in hushed whispers. He was said to be ruthless, a man who commanded power and fear in equal measure. Huang Rui couldn’t imagine what kind of brute he’d encounter.

A knock at the door interrupted his spiraling thoughts.

"It's time," his servant said, his eyes flickering with worry. "The carriage is ready, sir."

With a deep breath, Huang Rui stood, smoothing the front of his simple tunic. He wasn't dressed for intimidation; he wasn't sure he knew how to be intimidating. Instead, he prepared himself for the inevitable—an encounter with someone entirely out of his league.

The journey to the underbelly of the city was long and winding. The further they traveled, the more the streets became a labyrinth of shadows and whispers. And then, they reached it—the infamous estate belonging to the King of Hell.

Shen Yi’s palace was nothing like what Huang Rui expected. Grand, yes, but not the dark fortress filled with terrifying brutes that he’d imagined. The architecture had an elegance to it, traditional with sweeping arches and intricate carvings. The doors opened without a sound, revealing a dim interior bathed in red and gold.

Two guards, almost spectral in their silence, led him to the inner chamber.

There, seated atop a low dais, was Shen Yi.

Huang Rui's breath caught in his throat. Shen Yi was not the beast of nightmares that the rumors painted him as. He was sharp, dangerously sharp, with an air of lethal grace. His long, black hair flowed down his back, catching the flicker of candlelight like threads of night. His crimson robe was adorned with intricate golden designs, and despite his relaxed posture, there was a tension in the air, like a coiled snake ready to strike.

But what stunned Huang Rui the most wasn’t the notorious gangster’s beauty. It was the quiet intensity of his gaze, dark eyes observing every move like a predator eyeing its prey.

Shen Yi smirked, his voice low and smooth. “So, you’ve come to me... the desperate author in need of a favor.” He gestured for Huang Rui to sit, his tone dripping with amusement.

Huang Rui swallowed hard and forced his feet to move. “I didn’t have much of a choice,” he admitted, trying to steady his voice. “My manuscript—”

“I know.” Shen Yi’s smirk widened. “Word travels fast. And I also know that your little masterpiece is quite... valuable. To some.” He leaned forward slightly, resting his chin on his hand. “But you wouldn’t be here if you thought this was just about a story, would you?”

Huang Rui frowned. “What are you getting at?”

Shen Yi chuckled darkly. “Your novel. It’s more than fiction. You wrote something that someone wanted silenced—or worse, used. And that means you’ve just become very interesting.”

Huang Rui stiffened. His stomach churned with unease. “I... I never intended—”

“Intentions mean nothing,” Shen Yi interrupted, his eyes narrowing. “It’s what you’ve already set in motion that matters.”

Huang Rui swallowed again, feeling small in the presence of such controlled power. Shen Yi’s calm demeanor unnerved him more than any threat could have. The King of Hell was a man who held all the cards, and worse, he enjoyed watching others squirm.

“So,” Shen Yi continued, “what will you offer me in return for my help? Money?” He raised a brow, clearly unimpressed by the idea. “No, I think I’ll take something more... entertaining.”

Huang Rui’s heart pounded. “What... what do you want?”

Shen Yi’s smile was slow and predatory. “You. Whenever I desire your company. No questions. No refusals.”

The room seemed to grow colder despite the heavy incense swirling through the air. Huang Rui’s mouth went dry. He hadn’t expected this. His gaze flickered to the floor, thoughts racing.

He could walk away—return to his quiet, predictable life. But what then? His manuscript would be gone forever, possibly twisted into something beyond his control. If Shen Yi was right, his work had power, and that meant he had no choice but to fight for it.

“I agree,” Huang Rui finally said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Shen Yi’s grin grew wider, showing just a hint of teeth. “Good.”

In that moment, Huang Rui realized something vital about Shen Yi. He was more than just a criminal lord. He was a man who understood the art of control—of binding others to him, not through force, but through subtle manipulation. And that was far more dangerous.

As Shen Yi stood, moving toward him with an almost catlike grace, Huang Rui felt the shift in power between them. The gangster’s presence was suffocating, yet strangely magnetic. He had the power to destroy or protect, and Huang Rui wasn’t sure which side of that blade he would end up on.

“Don’t worry,” Shen Yi whispered as he passed by, his fingers lightly brushing Huang Rui’s shoulder. “You’ll get your manuscript back. But your story... oh, your story has only just begun.”

but then they find that small small sliver of hope! that beam of light! it's small, but it's something! something new and exciting!!!! and it's so scary, so exhilarating, but that makes them want to chase after it more and more. they learn to accept change, that at the end of the day, it's up to them to change. change begins with you and you alone. but you don't have to carry that burden by yourself. you can take it one step at a time, slow and steady :) i just think it represents rui and nene's story very well! i have a much longer analysis of black hole fantasy and rui here if you're interested in reading my brain stew /nf

a thing that i genuinely fucking adore about kiseki and that i always have rotating rotisserie-style in my brain is how much trauma and abandonment informs the behaviors and beliefs of the core four. each of them was abandoned or hurt by a parental figure -- via death, via abuse, via addiction -- and the families and lives they built in the aftermath are informed by that specific pain. zong yi and chen yi are both very focused on their ambitions and staying the course and rushing into an accelerated adulthood while containing their emotions safely under wraps. but even then, zong yi is just focused on learning how to provide and be responsible because he has people who still unconditionally support and rely on him and he's thus able to be the most well-adjusted; chen yi doesn't know how to live a life without danger (to himself, to yiyun meng, to ai di) and has no real sense of safety or stability. he's always chasing that hero-worship model of adulthood because he doesn't know how to be his own style of leader and being the mirror image of chen dong yang is going to give him the closest approximation of a sense of safety. he relied on CDY growing up and he believes that mimicking his boss is going to soothe his own terror at living in a fundamentally unstable, out-of-control world.

ai di, of course, was born with emotional instability due to his mother's drug use, so he never had a chance. like chen yi, who was orphaned at an early age, he never had the sense of stability of even one loving caretaker, and CDY doesn't exactly give off the nurturing dad vibes. chen yi was forced into a caretaking role for a close-to-death feral little kid, and he had no one to model affection for him. he did the best he could, and he does succeed in being protection and safe haven for ai di, but he's never had a chance to process and navigate the emotional complexities of burgeoning adulthood and romance. (ai di is, in many ways, similar to macau from KP, i think -- starving for attention and affection that their broken older sibling figures can only give so much of. both vegas and chen yi try mightily to give them the chances they didn't get, but they were equally failed first.) so ai di has the advantage of having a slightly safer space to begin spreading out his messy emotions, but he doesn't know how to really express them in healthy ways (hence his self-destructive attention-seeking behavior).

ze rui is the outlier in many ways -- he doesn't fit in zong yi's world, but he doesn't fit in chen yi's and ai di's, either. as ai di points out to him, he still fears death. he's got his feet wet in the mafia world, but he doesn't have the commitment. he's not as trapped there. he can slide more seamlessly, if awkwardly, into the real world (such as at zong yi's school; he's clumsy and it's played for laughs, but he's old enough and poised enough to keep the ruse semi-on the rails, whereas ai di's prickly, itchy energy makes it a lot harder for him to easily ingratiate). he has somewhere to go home to, both literally in the sense of his apartment, and more figuratively, in the sense of his vile family unit that wants to use him as a pawn for the business. he's more or less kept on ice as a second-best option, told he can be trotted out when he's useful, but slapped down at any moment where he might dare to outshine his brother. of all the four, he's the one in the most gilded cage. zong yi is in a prison of poverty; chen yi and ai di are trapped in a cycle of violence and death. they contain themselves into their own self-created, pre-determined paths. zong yi has no choice but to go to med school and become a family provider. he knows he'll be a workhorse forever. chen yi and ai di have the blackly comic life of wondering if they'll even both be alive on their next birthdays, and they alternately chafe at that and welcome it. ze rui has a financially advantageous future, if he'll continue being a loyal pet of the same people who ruthlessly crushed the independence and ambition and self-esteem out of him from childhood on.

it's just such a crunchy show with so much to really dig into and pick apart at the marrow. i'm fascinated with how everyone starts at a similar point (parental failures) and spirals out in vastly different ways. sometimes they parallel each other, sometimes they intersect, and sometimes they diverge into wildly different paths. there are so many rich veins to mine (and that's not even touching a lot of the traumas inflicted in canon, for fuck's sake) and it's so refreshing to see a show about trauma and healing that doesn't manage to disrespectfully screw over its characters in the eleventh hour.

He wished he did it more as a choice, he wished he wasn’t holding back, he wished he could relax, he wished he could see him he’s right there WHY CAN’T HE SEE HIM HE JUST WANTS TO BE SEEN HE JUST WANTS HIM TO LOOK AT HIM WHY WON’T HE LOOK HE SHOULD JUST STOP LOOKING AT THE CROWN AND LOOK AT HIM JUST LET HIM BE SEEN-]

[And as long as he’s not seen, these feelings of his will never come see the light. He is the prince, his knight would just go along with whatever he pleases. He’ll do it regardless of how he feels, and what a horrible fate to put him through. Tsukasa can’t be given love that is forced. It can’t be him who reveals his love, it has to be what Akito wants. He just wants Akito to truly want him like he does.]

You should read wonder halloween anyways. wonder halloween is the event of all time & here is why:

> the black knight show they’re doing in the beginning is referenced again in a tsukasa2 card story. Over a year later.

> immediate foreshadowing of emu’s fight against her family’s new policies & how that’s going for her (badly) before it’s brought up again in SOAD

> carrying over emu being willing to set aside her own emotions and hide them so the people around her will 1) not worry 2) continue being happy, like we saw in the main story with her giving up on the wonder stage and later in SOAD when she tries to hide how she’s feeling

> tsukasa bulldozing over emu’s reservations about the show contest vs the reversal of this in WMS where he really wants to win the contest but is more than willing to throw away the chance to do what emu wants & refuses to let emu feel bad about this or change the plan.

> the wonder stage has spider web decorations but no spider decorations because tsukasa vetoed anything spider shaped

> tsukasa falling & getting hurt (funny) (unless you’re rui)

> despite all of his complaints about how crazy’s rui’s stunts are when he gets hurt during one tsukasa lets it go pretty much instantly
