🎀 Anti-Consumption in Journaling 🎀
-by a stationery lover/blogger, pt. 2
💛 Thank you @maldemer for inspiring this post! 💛
Tumblr media
Love elaborate maximalist journal spreads but want to improve your consumption habits? I’m here to help!
Are you going for a journal with a lot of stickers and washi tape with minimal writing? Is your main goal creating collages with your stationary? Just want a pretty way to showcase your stickers?
Opt for a smaller journal! Reduce the visual space your working with to reach that maximalist/clutterbug 🐞 look with less materials.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I recommend refillable binder journals, it’s one reusable cover and you can save your old pages by tying them together with ribbon or save them as loose pages.
I recommend sizes A6, A7, M5/A8👇
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Need to Fill a lot of space? Let’s Talk Materials
Keep your packaging! I have a box of cute images and patterns I’ve cut from miscellaneous packaging to glue in my journal. If you’ve bought stationery recently, chances are the packagings are also pretty enough to save!
Free souvenirs! Going somewhere fun? Save a receipt (a favorite of mine to remember snacks I ate, or the date/time), a ticket, a map, a brochure, things you can collect from your outing that come at no cost to you.
Collect from nature! Have a separate book thick enough to press pretty flowers from your yard, your daily walk, the park, your hike, etc. just be careful not to touch something poisonous. You should have an on going collection of pressed flowers you can choose from to fill the space.
Junk mail! Make collages from newspapers, envelopes, flyers. Cut the individual letters to use or full words to string together a poem. Or cut fun shapes to make art.
Doodles! Not an artist? That’s okay! Make your doodles with cheap color pencils, ball point pens, crayons for texture! Messy is cute and endearing!
Thrifting! So many books for cheap from cooking, nature, poetry, novels, children’s books. Get your scissors and start snipping! Look for trinkets like buttons, ribbons, fabric scraps, small beads that you can glue
Creating visual weight! Chances are you have different page styles lying around, mix patterns, textures, colors. Is your journal dotted? Glue sections of graph, blank, or line paper to create visual interest. Received a gift lately? Tissue paper looks cute!
When buying stationery, buy from small artists when you can! Many artists have online shops and/or physical markets. It may be pricier than buying from companies, but you can guarantee the art/design is not stolen, and that the artist is being paid fairly for their work.
I went ahead and created a journal spread using some of the advice above. This is pocket journal with everything being pulled from scrap paper, junk mail, and some markers. Ignoring that I completely forgot what cucumbers looked like for a hot minute:
Here’s my journal spread!

⋆ ˚。⋆ ꪆৎ ˚ matchup for... @jae-pudding !!
ꪆ୧ if you would like to request a matchup, read this.
ִ ☆゙ requests are open.
[nsfw warning.]
Tumblr media
♡ ➜ YOUR MATCH IS....
Tumblr media
ʚ‎‏ ͜ ̩͙ ︵ ̩͙ ୨ MIRIO TOGATA ୧ ̩͙ ‏︵ ̩͙ ͜ ɞ
ִ ☆゙ REASONING: when I had read your description I immediately thought of him! And when I saw sun in your likes it basically had my answer set in stone. I really feel like you and Mirio's personalities go very well together, and he can definitely help you a lot. I feel like you two could really bond together and get along very well. (for this matchup, you and him are both in school but it doesn't center around it to much)
⋆ ˚。⋆ ꪆৎ ˚ favorite thing about you: Your humor!
ꪆ୧ HOW YOU MET:
I definitely feel like you two met in class, maybe you were a new student or it was the first day. Mirio actually approached you first and introduced himself, you introduced yourself as well and had a conversation going! Mirio definitely admired your humor and it's his favorite thing about you. I imagine your love for learning new things would lead up to Mirio actually tutoring you. After that, you guys became close friends and soon started your relationship.
ꪆ୧ CONFESSION:
As bold and brave Mirio is, he was terrified to confess to you. You guys have been friends for around a few months but within that time you both truly bonded. He thought you were the best thing alive and really believed you were his soulmate. Which is why he was scared. He didn't want to lose what you guys had, but it was so hard being just friends! He ended up asking Tamaki and Nejire for help. Tamaki had told him, "He'll probably say yes Mirio." While Nejire gave him a whole plan to help him confess! They were both his wingman, mainly Nejire because Tamaki believed all this wasn't necessary and that'd you'd agree no matter what, Nejire suggested he'd take you through a nice park with a lot of flowers! There was a lot of walking in the park but the sights were so pretty. You guys walked through the park admiring all the plants, and because you loved hiking, the walking wasn't an issue for you both. Mirio was super nervous the entire time but played it off flawlessly. You guys walked until there was this garden full of beautiful flowers and Mirio thought this was the perfect moment. He confessed that he's loved you since he met you, that he's always had his eye on just you, and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with you. Obviously, you liked him back and said yes admitting your own feelings for him to! Mirio was very relieved and ended up kissing you. Nejire and Tamaki (mainly Nejire) celebrated your relationship and were so happy for you both.
ꪆ୧ FIRST DATE:
Mirio is totally a hopeless romantic so for your first date he wanted to take you somewhere you'd enjoy, Nejire suggested plants again (give her a break, who doesn't love nature?) but Mirio wanted to try something different this time. He saw that an old classic movie was airing at the cinema and he thought it was perfect! A movie date! He's the type to subtly plan everything out in his head to make sure theday goes perfect. The moment he told you about the date you were shocked because the movie you'd guys were going to see was actually your favorite! Mirio ended up paying for everything, snacks included. (He totally bought a ton of snacks for you guys and a huge thing of popcorn)
Tumblr media
☆ GENERAL HEADCANONS
You guys love to study and train together! I can definitely see Mirio being a really good teacher (especially since Nighteye was his mentor) He can make study sessions really humorous but still get the goal across! And because of your good memory it's really easy for you to learn with him, you tend to finish the studying before him, but you still stay to admire and spend more time with him.
Behind your humor, his second favorite thing HAS to be your intuition. You and him both have a really keen ability for it, it probably amazed him when he found out you could do something similar to him. He's very astute and due to Nighteye's training he's learned to predict his opponents moves. He really loves you for it and you always manage to make him love and admire you more and more.
The big 3 defo hear about you often. Mirio isn't the type to brag, but he loves to talk about how amazing you are and how lucky he is. Nejire and Tamaki probably know a lot more than you think they do.
Mirio is aware of your anger issues but doesn't judge you for it at all. Infact, he's probably the only one who knows how to calm you down! He knows what people tend to say about you (your lack of empathy or ur inability to act human) and he totally doesn't judge you for it as well! He believes that they aren't true at all and only sees good in you.
You guys definitely garden together. After Mirio learned you love gardening, he started planting his own flowers to give you! (I headcanon he loves gardening which is why this is just so perfect.) He finds it comforting and calming, especially knowing it's your hobby.
He loves how independent you are and how you always speak your mind. Miscommunication rarely ever happens in your relationship because of this! (And because you're blunt it makes everything easier) Arguments are rare but when they do happen he's always the first to apologize and admit when he's wrong.
He loves learning about your interests because of how well you're able to speak about them. You always sound like a professional and that you always know what you're talking about and he adores it. Most of the time, study sessions are you teaching him!
I can totally see him taking you to new restaurants or cafés because of your love for food. He loves trying new things with you.
Because you're a Sagittarius and Mirio is a Leo, I decided to read websites about your compatibility, and I actually found some really interesting things! "Sagittarius and Leo are highly compatible signs that can form a natural, energetic connection. Both signs are extroverted, value freedom, and enjoy excitement and avoiding boredom. They can also share a great sense of humor and be open to expressing their needs and desires." Like?! It just explains your relationship perfectly and just further proves you guys are literally perfect!
When you both graduate his first goal was definitely to get you guys a place! If you aren't a pro hero with him he'll have no problem supporting you both. But, if you were a pro-hero with him he would always make sure you're okay and constantly check up on you after missions!
He's always risking his life for missions and he never feared death until you came into his life.
He sometimes fear you may become a target for villains because you're the closest thing to him but he's confident in the fact you're able to defend yourself.
You guys tend to rarely have time together especially after you both graduated, but Mirio ALWAYS makes sure to text you or call you whenever to make sure you're okay and to let you know he's okay too. He never gives up on making time for you and manages his time very well. He always makes up for lost time.
He's definitely going to be in the top 10 pro heroes so money is never an issue with you guys and he's always able to provide for you both, and buy you stuff as well.
If you ever wanted to get married, Mirio would 100% be the first to propose. He really sees you both being endgame and staying together for the rest of your lives.
Tumblr media
ꪆ୧ NSFW HEADCANONS:
he's 100% a soft dom.
he's the type to give gentle kisses and constantly check up on you during it, like he's so sweet
he definitely has some humor in the moment. It's never too serious with him
I don't really see him exactly as the extremely kinky type, he probably leans more into vanilla and definitely prefers 'making love to you' rather than anything lustful
he loves to be looking into your eyes during it, checking to see if you're uncomfortable or just to look at your face
he would totally be up for anything new you wanna try out as long as it isn't degrading or hurts you to much (I can't see him ever being into that, he loves you to much!)
AFTERCARE!! He's literally the best at it. After you two are done he always wipes you both clean, maybe starts a bath for you both, and constantly gives you kisses! If you're both tired he'll wipe you both down and cuddle in bed with you.
Tumblr media
⋆ ˚。⋆ ꪆৎ ˚ topes:
☆ Sun (mirio) x Star (you) ☆ Highschool Sweethearts ☆ Friends to Lovers
⋆ ˚。⋆ ꪆৎ ˚ second choice:
Honestly I had Mirio set in my mind as soon as I read your information, but I did consider another option. I had almost chose Hawks! He's known for his flirtatious and teasing personality which could really match your personality! He would totally be able to match your vibe. He's very confident and strong which aligns with your independent nature a lot. He's a great fit, just not as well as Mirio.
ִ ☆゙ song related to your relationship:
This was tricky because there were a lot of songs that reminded me of you two, but I settled on this one.

Anyway, uh, it's been busy so here is a brief (lies, it's not brief, but I promise I'm only giving the highlights) summary of the last month.
Break for very long post
The Last Month - Abridged
F & I are splitting up (sorta). The hardest one to write, but it's going up top 1. because it came first and 2. because if I don't start with it I simply won't write it out. It's been slowly moving towards this for awhile now, but it's real now. Mostly, it's a case of conflicting needs and conflicting disabilities, so it's been rough on both sides. We're still living together, and planning to continue that way (even if we weren't though, who could afford the rent?) so it's still family of a sort, but not like it was
I uncovered a major issue at work (~2 days after F had me start sleeping on the futon) and it was a mess but we got it resolved within two days
Less than an hour after finding the issue mentioned above, I got the call that the relative I was planning on visiting in a week died
I figured risking air travel was probably a bad idea. It'd probably end fine, but I've not yet been trapped somewhere with one of the worse perfumes and a metal box hundreds of feet in the air with no ability to leave for several hours seems like a poor place to risk seeing exactly how far these reactions can go. (I don't want a joint funeral, I'm not catholic). So I chose to drive through the night instead - which is also a bad idea, but what can you do? Packing with no idea about how things are going to go was it's own mess.
The drive went surprisingly well. I took as few stops as possible and I have a new odor reducing respirator that is helping a lot - so it was only a handful of reactions & I was ready to stomp them out each time (yay albuterol & xyzal). Pretty much drove straight through except for gas and a 30min catnap here and there (don't try this at home kids, I'm setting a bad example). My good friend driving-though-the-dark-alone-listening-to-a-horror-podcast kept me awake just fine (I love you Left Right Game) (but again, don't try this at home)
Did the funeral things, got super sick in the church but was alright at the other venues. I must have looked really bad in the church though because my family didn't make a single snide remark about me bringing my dog on the trip during the entire time I was there.
Helped out with moving things around the house and dispersing some possessions. I drove a bunch of clothes (fragrant 🤦 but I had them in trash bags so it was mostly okay) back with me to donate to the various queer orgs around here. They'll appreciate the old natural fiber clothes more than the goodwill where most of it was going.
Made a detour specifically to bring my dog to the Atlantic. She had a blast. Nova has now officially crossed the country (W->E and also S->N).
On the drive back I went hiking the farthest I've been from a city in a long time and I felt so fucking alive. On the one hand, stunning experience - did 7mi (11km) in snow no problem as a short hike (since I was trying to make it back to bring F to a medical appointment) and I would have stayed out all day if I could. On the other hand, it's a little concerning if the only place I feel like myself is that far away from people. I can't afford a house & land in the middle of nowhere…
Also stopped by a place we used to live and walked our old neighborhood route. Nova was excited, but confused.
Wound up in a different park after hours and it might have been haunted
Made it back the day before F's appointment. Slept. Discovered that the one provider I liked less than the others (despite them all being equally friendly) uses perfume so I've just been allergic to them instead of disliking them for no reason (I kinda suspected so, but it was proven this time)
Had a rheumatology appointment to see if they had ideas about what my issue might be. This is the first time I have seen a doctor realize what it means when I say I'm having these reactions to fragrances, you could see it play out on her face: oh shit, fragrances are everywhere. Several times throughout the appointment she'd pause as she had a thought and then ask questions that were clearly checking in on my life outside of just the symptoms (e.g. "how do you get groceries?") which is something I haven't seen since F's GP (whose interest was in public health) moved away. I think it went well. She's running the usual bloodwork, partly just to check and partly because she knows that having ruled out some things already will make it more likely for me to get care from an allergist.
Toured more houses for rent, it just made me incredibly sad. You can see traces of someone's beloved home in some of these old houses, but landlords own them now and they just don't bother. Rotting garages, fences in pieces, trash in the yard, holes in the walls, doors that can't open all the way anymore. 'Just let the tenant do the work and foot the bill, people are desperate, we can let the house rot around them while they pay for the privilege and just buy another when it pops up.' (I have feelings on the matter)
Finally got my covid & flu shots. I had timed it specifically for when our favorite pharmacist works, but I hadn't considered the holiday rush would mean they have two on duty. I instead got our least favorite pharmacist (she does not like F) and it was an impressively bad experience. Sure love it when you tell a provider something has given you side effects every time and they tell you it won't do it 🙄 /s
Rheumatology bloodwork is back, I love receiving results online. I'm very interested in what she'll say at the follow up this week. By my read (science nerd, but no relevant medical training), it's… odd. A little contradictory, but it's indicating some shit is up - however, none of the main contenders would explain my fragrance reactions.
Got to volunteer with a conservation group in a safe area for me.  Had a fantastic time, was able to be around people and move and do something productive and satisfying.  Went back again and will continue trying to do these as I can.
Went with F to her allergy appointment and, ironically, had reactions myself the entire time.  Not just in the waiting room, but everywhere in the building.  Maybe it was their disinfectant? Hoping it was just a fluke because I used to be able to go there, even while dealing with this.
My allergy appointment went poorly, there's another (long) post about it, but the gist is that I now have VCD in my chart (despite the fact he said he doesn't know what is wrong with me and said maybe I should go to Mayo Clinic) & tests he didn't mention
I am currently arguing with insurance over >$10k and I'm not having fun

i feel so high school (au) pt. 6.A: piarles
anyway here are some high school aus for my fav f1 rpf ships and an exploration of who knows how to ball, and who knows aristotle
(based on american high school setups cause of the song)
photographer!charles and motocross!pierre: pierre knows how to ball, charles knows aristotle. they’ve known each other since they were kids, lived on the same street, in fact neither of them can remember a time before the other was in their lives. it’s a small, folksy-looking town right on the edge of a national park, so not only is it surrounded by forests and mountains but it’s pretty cut off from “the outside world”. no nearby amusement parks or sports stadiums, if you want to have fun there and you’re a kid your playground is the Great Outdoors. that’s where young charles and pierre have their best memories together. they’d go exploring on nearly-forgotten hiking trails, form their own trails when they discovered a cave or a spring or a waterfall or somewhere they liked to go back to. pierre was better at climbing rocks but charles was way better at climbing trees, and they were definitely way too competitive at stone skipping considering they were both egregiously lenient about what constituted a “full skip”. they went camping every summer, tried to go stargazing and ended up making their own constellations, just two kids and nature.
it changed a little bit around middle school. their hometown had an elementary but that’s it so all the kids in that age group had to take the bus to the next town over for the next two schools. that town wasn’t really any more urban, but it was definitely bigger and being surrounded by so many new people threw a wrench into everyone’s social life. it was practically a rite of passage. pierre starts to drift away from charles in the first place because he finally meets some other kids who ride dirt bikes. he and charles both have one and while he was constantly trying to get charles to join him, charles would pretty much always say no and pierre would begrudgingly agree; now he’s got friends who will actually go riding with him and he’s elated. it doesn’t seem like such a big deal but he starts spending more and more time with them, especially after school, and ends up taking a different bus home because he stays in that town later. charles gets a little worried and tries to approach him about it, like hey why are you hanging out with those rough-looking kids? why are you out so late i thought you had a curfew? and even though he means well pierre feels increasingly like charles is trying to mother him and being overbearing and even a little possessive (although this last one is closer to the truth).
so they grow apart, only charles has spent so long with pierre that he never really made other friends and he’s left a little stranded. instead of taking the ambitious risk of trying to find new people he gets really invested in various hobbies, trying to disappear into his mind and feel less alone. he goes through half a dozen crafty activities (songwriting, sketching, any musical instrument he can find in a tourist shop) until he gets a camera for his birthday and that’s something he can finally connect with. that’s one of the last moments he spends with pierre when he could still consider them “friends”, bringing pierre along on this really tall hiking trail so he can get the optimal viewpoint and pierre hasn’t seen charles with this much wonder and excitement in his eyes in so long and when charles is taking his picture pierre feels suddenly bashful like he doesn’t deserve that much attention, doesn’t deserve to be treated like an art piece… and if there was any one moment the two of them could have realized what was really going on between them that would’ve been it but do either of them do even a little bit of self-reflection? noooo
they graduate to high school and if charles thought anything would change he’s wrong, but maybe things are starting to look up for him a bit. by now he’s coming around to the fact that he’s definitely not straight, even though that hadn’t even been a possibility only a few years ago he’s a teenager and he’s old enough to start having certain thoughts about certain people. if he and pierre were still super close maybe he would’ve been able to take more notice of his own complex feelings, but as it is it’s a lot of fleeting infatuation and half-formed lust around boys who barely know he exists. that changes when he meets carlos and lando, two guys in his year; they’re friends because they’ve both moved recently from much bigger cities and don’t have a lot in common with the small-town park ranger crowd. they also don’t know charles’s somewhat loser status so they kind of take him in, and he’s just so relieved to have friends that he doesn’t really question whether carlos looks at him a little too long sometimes or tries to get him alone an awful lot. in fact he finds he rather likes the attention. the three of them fall into this sort of little-too-close rhythm where the lines between friendliness and flirting are so blurred they might as well not even be there.
pierre, on the other hand, has kind of gone down the opposite path. when high school started he got a motor bike for the first time and as soon as he felt that level of speed and adrenaline he was pretty much addicted. the group of guys he runs with have mostly gotten their own bikes aw well and it’s not long before a few of them start to compete, there are actually trails nearby in dried out lake beds and such and he finds that even as an amateur he’s got serious talent. that starts to be his dream, to be a pro athlete, and that journey starts early. between races and sponsorship events and basically joyrides, charles pretty much never sees him. but they’ve got something major in common now.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
you sat on the bench, swinging your legs back and forth as your eyes traveled across the landscape before you. you were waiting for minghao at the bottom of the mountain where he'd texted you to wait. your backpack had your camera gear in it as you hugged it closer to your chest, many people passing by you as the seconds passed slowly, paris in the rain playing loudly through your airpods, drowning the world out.
black nail-polished fingers snapping in front of your face had snapped you out of your trance as you stared up at the chinese man. you took your airpods out, placing them in their respectful spots before tucking them in your backpack. "let's go." the man urged you as you put your backpack on, following after him.
"here." he extended a paper cup towards you as you slowly grabbed it, fingers brushing against one another while you sniffed the drink. "that's why i was a bit late." he murmured, loud enough for you to hear as he slowed his pace down a bit to match yours.
you were awestruck by how he’d guessed your favourite drink, looking between the cup in your hands and the man, before your eyes settled on your footing instead, a shy smile making its way to your face. "thank you." you mumbled, seeing him nod in your peripheral.
in fact, minghao hadn't guessed your favourite drink, he simply took notice of the one you were holding at the cafe only a few days ago, and it hadn't slipped his mind since then, as well as your dimples. he also told seokmin to make up some plans so he could hitch this trip with you and try and get to know you.
he couldn't deny that you were pretty, really, really pretty and that he'd be a fool if he didn't at least hint at something. especially after that night.
“uh, also…” you trailed off, pursing your lips shyly before you continued. “thank you for the lighter…and for taking me home.”
minghao couldn't hide his shock. he thought that you were shit-faced drunk that night and you wouldn't remember a thing in the morning, but there you were, thanking him about it.
he nodded in acknowledgement, suddenly getting shy at that as he shoved his hands in his pockets and looked the other direction of you.
“i didn't think you'd remember.” he commented and you chuckled awkwardly.
you cleared your throat, glancing up at him for a brief second before you looked at your steps again. “i actually still don't remember that night. i just saw the lighter the next morning and seungkwan wouldn't stop teasing me about it every time he came over, so…”
he nodded in acknowledgement, doing his best to his disappointment and focus on the flight of stairs ahead instead.
only a few moments later, you called out to the man again, making him halt in his movements this time as he turned to you. "why, uh, did you pick this place?" there was a slight pant between your words as you urged yourself up the mountain, and it had minghao rethinking his choices and debating whether he should look for somewhere else. but it was already too late.
"don't you and mingyu do this?" he questioned. mingyu did certainly tell him you preferred to photograph natural sceneries than people photography, that's why you and mingyu would spend the whole day together for it, moving almost all across the city.
"we've never been hiking before, really. we usually go to a park, have lunch, then move around in his car." you'd explained, keeping your eyes ahead to watch the stairs and not trip on one.
minghao's lips puckered in thought before he turned to you. "we're basically doing the same thing, except this is healthier and would be more enjoyable." his head turned to the front again, missing the way you rolled your eyes. stairs were your worst enemy, so you were certainly unhappy with this, however, you still missed the slight pants between his words. damn mingyu, he was the one who recommended hiking to him.
it was a quiet hike between the two of you, reaching atop once the orange hues came into view and the sunset had just started. you'd found a log, quickly rushing to it and sitting down with an exasperated sigh at the work-out you'd just done. you'd unfortunately have to skip leg day with mingyu and joshua this week, which would obviously be so, so upsetting to you.
you put your backpack next to you, crossing your arms and still managing your breathing while minghao took a seat next to you, getting out a sketch instead of the camera you'd expected. "what's this?"
"a sketch."
"no shit, sherlock. i meant where's your camera? isn't this for the newspaper?" you frowned, staring at the sketch before finally meeting minghao's eyes, and he didn't look happy with you.
he sighed, shaking his head before getting his pencil case out. "it's for a project i have. seokmin and mingyu are the photographers, i'm the artist.”
"oh? i didn't know that." you murmured, nodding as you prepared your things.
“you seem to not know a lot.”
your curious gaze dropped as you felt your stomach drop as well, nodding to yourself with a quiet chuckle before you picked your backpack up with your camera in hand and walked away from the man silently, leaving him to his thoughts and drawings while you started doing your and mingyu's jobs combined, photographing people while capturing the beautiful greenery sights and the sunset as you went.
you'd almost forgotten about minghao by the time you were done, sitting down on the grass, your camera in your lap before you'd gotten a text from joshua, asking when you'd be home. you'd replied that you'd be there soon, and he ended the chat with a take care.
"hey."
looking up, you found minghao looming over you, a cup in a hand, and your things in the other with a paper bag. you only hummed in acknowledgement as you resumed surfing through the pictures you took that day. "i got you apple juice."
that had you giving him his full attention as you placed your camera in your lap while he dropped down next to you with a low grunt. "how'd you know i like apple juice?"
"lucky guess." he hummed, handing you the paper bag while he settled your things between the two of you, resting back on his hand while his legs were folded in front of him. you'd already opened the pack and had almost finished it while he got comfortable. "sorry if i was a bit mean earlier."
you, again, hummed in acknowledgement as minghao pursed his lips, unknowing of how he should react now. "is that a sign of forgiveness or is this you dismissing me?"
and then you shrugged. and minghao almost groaned aloud at that. "well, i'm sorry, again, for being mean and if-hey, where you going?"
you looked down at the man as you hoisted your bag over your shoulder. "my brother wants me home." you'd replied curtly, turning around to start your way down the mountain before you paused, turning to face the man with a tight smile that had your dimples awkwardly popping. "thank you for the juice...and the drink...and the hike. bye."
and you'd left the man like that. and minghao, in all his years he'd spent in this foreign country, had never been left this stunned and speechless, watching your retreating back as you placed your earbuds in your ears and drowned out the world.

If they had to decide, where would the ROs take the MC on a trip? What are each of their strengths, or what they think is their strength, when traveling? <- like one is best at making sure they do everything on time, one is surprisingly good at finding the tastiest places to eat, one takes the best photos or finds the best souvenirs, one saves you the most money, etc!
I'm assuming a modern AU! 💕
SALVATORE. I think they'd be excited to go pretty much anywhere, but they'd especially love to admire the culture of a place! Museums, monuments, natural wonders, they will want to witness it all and just get immersed. They are the best when you want to get a full and immersive experience, having a full-blown itinerary for all the things they want to see and find! Nothing too fast-paced, though, as they prefer to take their time and actually get into it, rather than rush seeing it all. If this scheduling is not your thing, they'd be open to spontaneously going urban exploring and just go wherever interests you!
LUCIEL. They'd be interested in more nature trips, but the leisurely kind. Anything that they can stop and observe natural wonders and the scenery, somewhere peaceful and quiet, but very in tune with the earth. That's just a preference, though; if there was anywhere you particularly wanted to go to, they'd be happy to go, cities or hiking (though they have a rather fragile constitution) or otherwise. They'd be the best prepared, checking all your documents and supplies, and ensuring that they have some backups and emergencies. They're also quite thrifty! "Airport Dad" trend.
CIOCANA would want to enjoy some exciting and adventurous ideas! Keep in mind that Ciocana is also not the most physically capable, but some less physically demanding, fun ideas would work, such as haunted houses and rollercoasters. An amusement park would be exciting! They're also rather interested in more intellectual things like art galleries, museums and landmarks, if that's what you'd like instead. They'd also enjoy plays and musicals! They may be open to physical activities, but you'd have to wait on them constantly. They get the best and most souvenirs for you, both silly and useful, and are the most creative with spontaneous ideas!
ALESSI would love physical activities, like hiking, scuba diving, and walking tours! Like Luciel, though, they're also quite comfortable with peaceful trips where you're more leisurely. If you'd rather do something cultural and intellectual, they'd go along with it, but it'd be quite new to them. They are endlessly curious, so they likely come to really like museums! They wish they visited earlier. They ask lots of questions, especially to speakers and guides, and would do further research back home. I think they'd really like dinosaur exhibits and rocks, just a random thought! Art galleries can be rather boring, though, so are operas. Musicals are quite interesting! They're the most flexible of the ROs because they enjoy a lot of things, mainly because they are the most open to new experiences.
Thank you so much for such a fun and lighthearted ask!! 🥺♥️ Modern AUs for them would be so peaceful...

i keep having to explain to people on reddit how basic decomposition works.
if two white girls die in the jungle. it is not surprising there is little left of their remains after a month. decomposition in the jungle takes weeks, not months or years. people are animals, and an animals dead body doesnt just hang out there on the soil untouched for months hoping someone finds them to give them a proper burials. scavengers will come out and pick the meat off. crush up bones. insects will pick them clean. water will wash away bone fragments. bacteria and other microbes will break everything down, oftentimes from the inside out (intestinal microbes gotta go somewhere)
its not nice to think about nor is it pretty. but its normal. in nature nothing is wasted. it isnt mysterious or points to foul play. its a jungle. it is hot and wet and crawling with life from bugs to small animals to predators to even potentially herbivores who will gnaw on some bones for the minerals or extra protein from meat as an opportunist. it be like that sometimes.
but then again i think these are the same ppl who think national parks are like disneyland or smth. the wilderness is not easily hospitable to human life. if you get injured in the wilds you can and will die. easily. like. stupid easy. like maybe it is bc i am from the literal desert where mountain lions and gila monsters and javelina and coyotes and rattlesnakes are not some distant hazard but instead a part of life in town and are even more unfriendly in the wilds on their home turf but. i cannot believe there are ppl who dont know "if you wander off trail you can and likely will die very easily and there will be little anyone can do to help you". helicopters looking for idiots who went off trail or went hiking in the heat of summer during the day here happen every year, usually multiple times a year. it is sad but not super uncommon to hear someone was found dead on a hiking trail having twisted their ankle. professional athletes will even go to places like the grand canyon and just fucking die because they got too cocky

Which flower is your favorite? Peonies! It's been my favorite for a while and I don't think it'd still change as I'm not much into plants and flowers to begin with.
Have you ever picked wild flowers? No. The only thing I've ever plucked out are weeds LOL at home.
Have you ever walked through a forest? Hmm, I dunno - does hiking a forest-y mountain count? I've climbed two mountains, both of which get super deep in the forest.
Do you enjoy walking through nature parks? I wish I can answer this but we don't even have any here. I feel like I would enjoy them, but probably just in moderation - being in nature isn't really my top favorite activity.
What was the last wild animal you saw? Can't even remember...I live in the city, so all I see are birds, dogs, and cats.
Have you ever seen a mountain in person? Yes, many of them and many times.
Do you prefer jam or butter on your biscuits? Butter. I don't like fruits so I've never sought out jam.
Have you ever explored somewhere abandoned? I probably have but nothing comes to mind. It's definitely not a hobby of mine, though.
Where is the last place you went to as a tourist? Vietnam. I was in Da Nang before we flew back to Manila - the literal last spot I visited before we headed to the airport was this quaint little cafe just right outside our Airbnb. It was al fresco, there were lots of trees with their branches swaying ever so gently, I was surrounded by a mix of locals and fellow tourists who were also out on their own, and everything just...felt nice. It was the perfect peaceful vibe to wrap up a really fulfilling trip.
What country do you most want to travel to? I'd love to go back to South Korea but this time to explore Seoul, because I was in Jeju the first time.
Do you have any plants in your home? We do, but it's my mom who owns and maintains them.
Do you have a garden? Just a very small one in front of our house.
Do you prefer to read in bed or in a chair? Chair. I'd fall asleep if I read in bed, lol.
What is the last book you read? It's a book on Philippine artifacts. I haven't touched it since September-ish, but I plan on coming back to it once we have our holiday shutdown which starts this weekend.
Do you prefer tea or coffee? Coffee.
How do you take your tea or coffee? My favorite coffees are caramel macchiato and Spanish latte – so, really, I like my drinks on the sweet side. Whole milk takes my tummy through hell and back so I like to sub it with either oat or almond milk.
Do you have any pets? If yes, what are their names? If no, do you want any pets? I have three and they are my world :) Their names are Cooper, Agi, and Max. We also previously had Kimi, Arlee, and Miki.
In the last 7 days, my sister and I have also been looking out for and feeding a pregnant stray that's been roaming the neighborhood - we call her Mama Cat. She started bringing another cat by like Day 3 lol so he can eat too, and we're suspecting he's the dad so we've called him Dada Cat haha.
Have you ever kept a physical, hand-written journal? I have, but I was always terrible at maintaining them.
Have you ever caught a butterfly in your hands? Nope.
What style house do you want to own? Modern and minimalist. I'd be perfectly happy with a house that looks like this:
Tumblr media
Do you enjoy long car rides or long walks? Either is pleasant as long as the scenery and vibe is pleasant. I wish I could walk more but I live in the most walk-unfriendly country ever.
What is in the drawer nearest you? Just my home clothes and some knickknacks I hoard in case I need them one of these days.
Would you rather swim in a lake, a river, or the ocean? I'd like to try swimming in a lake - it seems so peaceful.
Are there any interesting landmarks where you live? Nah it's pretty uneventful here and Metro Manila as a whole. Tourists are much better off in the provinces where we'd have so much more to offer, food- culture- and destination-wise.
What is the last thing you took a picture of that wasn’t yourself? The dogs.
Would you rather play in the snow or the rain? Snow.
What is the last thing you cooked? I can't cook, heh.
What is your favorite fruit and vegetable? For fruits I like avocado...and tbh just avocado; I hate fruits. Veggies - I like broccoli, eggplant, asparagus, and green beans.
Do you like to drink or snack on anything while you study or read? Nooooooo I avoid eating when I work, lol. I tend to enjoy the food so much that it ends up distracting me, and I'll take more bites than do the work that I need to be doing.
What is the last piece of jewelry that you wore? Not sure. Maybe a necklace? I don't usually wear jewelry.
Have you ever pressed flowers or leaves into a book? I don't think so, no.
What do you usually order at a cafe, if anything? Spanish latte is consistently in menus so that's my safest bet.
Do you prefer studying at home, at school, or somewhere else? I usually work at home but for a change of scenery I'll sometimes go to a coffee shop.
Have you ever found a four-leaf clover? I don't think I'd ever find one here.
Are you more of a day or night person? Night.
If you could live in a fictional world, which would it be? San Junipero.
What are three things that you always carry with you when you leave home? Phone, at least 1 ID, a hair tie. Very unique!
What did you do the last time you hung out with your best friend? We went to the UP bonfire because we won the championships at men's basketball!!!!!!!!!! :D It's only the fourth time it's happened since 1940 so DUH we made sure not to miss out. Such a sweet bonus that Eraserheads happened to have a surprise performance, too. They hadn't performed on campus since 1999 so it was extra special...I never thought I'd see them in my lifetime so I was definitely on cloud nine then.
Which type of muffin is your favorite? Chocolate.
What color is the sky right now where you are? Very dark blue.
Have you ever taken an art class? Not voluntarily.
When is the last time you tried a food completely new to you, and what was it? This fancy ass overpriced siomai at this fancy ass restaurant where I met up with Leah. 500 pesos for four pieces of dumplings I could have gotten LITERALLY 20x cheaper at some sidewalk food stall hah. But I wasn't paying so I didn't feel too violated lmao
Do you believe there is an answer for everything? In theory, yes. We're not always guaranteed the answers we're looking for, though.
Are there any smells, tastes, or sounds that you associate with childhood? There's this sweet nutty scent that'd always be at my mom's bank whenever she'd take me there as a kid. It was the only place I smelled that smell so it stands out quite strongly in my memories.
Would you rather live in a coastal town or a town closer to the forest? Coastal town. How lovely would that be?
What sounds, smells, and tastes do you associate with your favorite season? I don't have a favorite season.
When is the last time you spent all day in bed? On my literal bed, maybe 4 years ago when I was still rotting away from my breakup? I do spend time on the couch quite often though.
When is the last time you went for a walk? Wednesday.
What do you like to put on your toast? Scrambled eggs.
Would you rather watch the clouds or look at the stars? Either sounds lovely, but I like the stars just a little bit more.
What smells are your favorite? Seafood is definitely up there.
What is your favorite shade of blue? Indigo.
Do you like to make to-do lists? Definitely, especially at work. My daily to-do lists are my lifeline.
Do you prefer iced tea or hot tea? Iced coffee or hot coffee? Iced for both.
What is your ethnic background? Filipino.
What is your favorite animal on the merry-go-round? Idk I've only seen horses on them? Haha.
What can you hear around you right now? Just the aircon running and I also have an old Jungkook live playing in the background.
What was in your last sandwich and what bread did you use? It was uhhhhh just your good ol Zinger from KFC hahaha.
Have you ever been camping? Nope.
What are you currently listening to? JK :)

The First Meet
Chapter 1 of my new König x Fem!OC fic, Rush
See Chapter List
Tumblr media
Summary: A private jet pilot flies her boss to Austria and hangs around for three weeks. She gains a new friend during a hike. You already know what's next.
Warning/s: A bit of explicit language; König has an established real name here; pretty much a self-indulgent (yes, self-insert) fic, so sorry in advance
. . .
Back to You // Lost Frequencies, Elley Duhé, X Ambassadors
Bobbing her head to the steady four-on-the-floor beats echoing inside her helmet, Kate rode her motorbike across the winding roads of the Austrian Alps. The cold morning breeze worked against her music though, subtly reminding her that she could be sound asleep at this hour, if not for the long ride to the hiking spot in her itinerary.
Nevertheless, she loved every second. In fact, it was all she could ask for at the moment—cruising at your own pace and singing without a care while the snow-capped mountains keep you company. She passed a couple of rock tunnels and couldn’t be more grateful likening herself to a speck of dust amidst the mass of the earth, one with the nature she is traversing.
A while after, a loud car horn awoke her from the trance of a blissful groove. She glanced sideways at the open window of an SUV matching her speed. A little boy was waving at her. She revved her bike and waved back, her heart warmed by the small interaction. Afterwards, the car zoomed away.
All this on a Wednesday? This is the fucking life, she thought.
Soon, she reached her destination. She slowed to a stop at a parking lot, scanning for a spot, preferably one that keeps her bike from hitting someone else’s car should it be knocked down. That was an easy find though; there weren’t a lot of tourists on a weekday morning. If there was anything she truly worried about, it was her bike’s noise drawing unnecessary attention in a quiet place like Tyrol. As soon as she set the kickstand down and stowed away her riding gear, she began her hike.
Choosing the scenic way up, she marched up a multitude of stone steps for two hours in a continuous steep climb, alternating between walking and stopping by to take pictures of the view.
Eventually, her stops became her excuses to rest. Every step she took grew heavier, as was her breathing. The air gradually thinned and she soon realized that as active as she was, the hike wasn’t going as perfectly as she had hoped.
Maybe it’s the ride? Should I have spent the night somewhere halfway? She reckoned that she must’ve overestimated herself. Flaws of the confident, I guess, she shrugged.
Giving herself a second to breathe, she powered back through—only to stop again.
Nope, not happening, she relented as her exhaustion got the best of her. She slumped over with her hands on her knees, took a deep breath, and exhaled with a yell to try and get herself back up. Some feet ahead of the trail, two men looked back at her and started whispering.
“Verzeihung!” she squeaked, flinching and raising her hand apologetically. One of the men said something to the other with a cheeky smile, and the other responded with a slap on the former’s shoulder.
Her eyes widened and her cheeks glowed red. God, who else heard that? She decided to turn away and stand by a ledge to spare herself from feeling any more like that one obnoxious tourist. She ate a granola bar from her bag to occupy herself and took redundant photos as she waited for the longest 5 minutes of her life.
“Hallo, sprechen Sie Englisch?” asked a voice from behind.
She looked towards the voice to find that it belonged to one of the men up the trail. A tall Asian guy who looked to be in his late thirties. He wore a teal hiking backpack with an all-black outfit of running shorts and a plain dri-fit shirt that fit his form well. To top it off, he didn’t look tired at all, which gave Kate the impression that he was highly athletic—or simply not a novice hiker.
“Yeah, hi,” she responded.
“Nice, my friend over there just got a little concerned,” he said with a tiny smirk, gesturing to his companion who stood quite a ways up and staring off elsewhere. Kate noticed that the man didn’t have an Austrian accent, which somehow soothed her unease over her seeming ignorance.
She cringed at herself. “Oh…gosh, I’m sorry about the noise,” she said with nervous laughter. As nice as their concern was, it just confirmed to her that she was an obvious newbie.
The man chuckled. “Don't be. Care to join us?”
Welp, company would definitely make this easier, save for the fact that they were the ones who giggled at you earlier. “Sure,” she beamed anyway.
Kate tagged behind the man as they walked towards his buddy. “This route’s a little more challenging, yeah?” he spoke lightheartedly.
“Uh huh. First hike.” she faltered.
“Not a bad choice. The view makes up for the long climb,” he replied with a stern voice.
As they closed in on his buddy, her immediate impression was that as tall as the first man was, the second one? Even more so. A fair-skinned man whom she guessed must’ve been around 7 feet tall, if not close. Contrary to the “concern” that the first man mentioned, his buddy met them with a straight face, concealed by a gray face mask. “This is my friend, Dominik,” he introduced him. “Kate”, she responded back, offering to shake Dominik’s hand. He accepted and nodded, albeit his eyes narrowing and his hand being a little cold, which she brushed off as due to the weather.
“Ah–and I’m Hong-jin,” he chimed in, enunciating his name as if to make sure she got it right.
“Nice meeting you both,” Kate said as she shook Hong-jin’s hand, “Thanks for taking me with you guys.”
“Sure,” Hong-jin answered, then directed his gaze to Dominik. “It’s her first hike,” he remarked. His eyes lingered at Dominik for a couple seconds longer, as if to cue him to say something.
“Olpererhütte for your first hike? Who told you this was a beginner trail?” Dominik looked down at Kate.
“No one…?” she lilted, “I just asked my Airbnb host for the prettiest one around.” She shrugged, “Though this really is one for the books for me. Even on the ride here.”
Dominik only raised his brows slightly before looking straight ahead. For the rest of the climb, that would be the longest couple of sentences he ever spoke, choosing to keep on with his hands tucked inside the pockets of his cargo pants. It was mostly Hong-jin chatting with Kate. If Dominik ever said anything, they were mere one or two-word replies. For the time being, as she shared some menial details about herself, she was able to figure out that Hong-jin is a Korean, and Dominik a German who spent his childhood in a nearby Austrian town, and that the two had a brotherly dynamic about them.
“How long before we reach the hut?” she asked the two of them.
“Maybe a couple more hours,” Hong-jin replied.
Kate hissed, tucking her water bottle in and adjusting her backpack. “Whew, long way.”
“Just tell us if you need a break, all right?” Hong-jin reassured her.
“Yeah thanks,” she answered curtly.
“Wait,” Dominik said under his breath, stopping to stand still. He took his face mask off and clutched it while his hand rested on his waist. He kept his head down and his eyes darted towards the ground, fully concentrated on getting back some much needed air. Beads of sweat began to drip down the side of his forehead.
Hong-jin’s expression shifted from calm to worried. “You good?” he asked. Dominik’s eyes did not leave his shoes as he swung his free hand, as if to shoo the other two away. Kate twirled the strap of her backpack around her finger and looked to Hong-jin, unsure of what to do.
“Okay, we’ll go ahead.” Hong-jin uttered. “He’ll be fine,” he told Kate with a shake of his head as they walked on, but not too far as to leave Dominik behind.
When they were a good amount of steps away, Kate cast a glance at Dominik. “You sure he’s fine?”
“Yeah, yeah,” he waved off, “By the way, weren’t you the one with the GS earlier?”
“Uhh…yes,” she drawled, eyeing towards her left and pulling a downward grin, “Was it that loud?”
“Oh no, no,” he croaked, leaning away slightly, “Nik and I saw you parking when we started.”
“Ah. Okay,” she trailed off. “ ‘Cause I was honestly worried it was too noisy,” she continued, wrinkling her nose at the thought, “I asked the bike rental for one that wasn’t bothersome in Tyrol but good enough to ride from Vienna.”
That earned his fascination. “Whoa, you rode from Vienna?” he asked her.
“Mmhm,” she nodded proudly, “Had to go pretty early, but fun stuff! I didn’t get tired much because I was just vibing with everything.” Not tired, sure, but maybe I shouldn’t have ridden five hours to hike for another four.
“Cool,” he said in awe. “I’m saving up to buy my own actually.”
“Ooh, what bike are you picking?” she asked in delight.
“Kawasaki Ninja,” he said, “I like the sporty look.”
“The 1000?” she asked, head tilted in anticipation.
“Yeah.”
“Aw hell yeah. I still ride a Beemer back in the Philippines. RnineT.”
“Nice,” he high-fived her in approval, “Wait, where’s—König!” he called out to Dominik below, but cut himself off for some reason. Meanwhile, his friend looked back at them from standing before the mountain view cross-armed, letting out an exhale before trudging towards them. “Aish, i mossol…” Hong-jin sighed to himself.
Dominik wore his mask again after he caught up with them, wordlessly as before. Eventually, the three reached their first destination: a two-storey mountain hut made of burnt-colored bricks and wood, a place where all the hikers gathered.
A look of fulfillment painted Kate’s face as she intertwined her fingers behind her head and took a deep breath. “Finally,” she sighed. The trio walked into the place and Kate’s first thought was to go to the bathroom. She excused herself and told the two men that they could go ahead to the hanging bridge that was a short walk away from the hut. Almost immediately after she was out of earshot, Hong-jin turned to Dominik.
“She rides bikes and flies planes,” he implored, stressing his point with his hands.
“Oh wow, danke! Du bist der Hammer!” he derided, “For fuck’s sake, Jin, stop playing matchmaker.”
“What? Why not? You said she was ‘easy on the eyes’,” he quipped back, sounding mildly offended.
“She doesn’t look bad, that’s what I meant,” Dominik groaned, “You know, if you like her so much, just ask her out.”
“One, I’m out of the market right now—”
“So am I—”
“And two, you’re the one for sale.”
“Ugh.”
The two walked out of the hut and on to the bridge, still continuing their banter. As persistent as Hong-jin was, he couldn’t afford to push his friend past his boundaries, so he arrived at a compromise.
“Okay, at least talk to her so you have something new to tell your therapist?” he fretted.
Dominik stared blankly at his friend and took a second to think. “Eh…no,” he said dryly, hiking briskly ahead to gain some alone time at the hanging bridge. Hong-jin could only scratch his head, but what else could he do? He strolled elsewhere to sit and take in the view, overlooking the vast valley that embraced a turquoise lake.
Kate made her way up to the bridge after some time, passing Hong-jin in his little spot. “Hey there,” she chirped.
“Hi,” Hong-jin greeted back, “Nik’s over at the bridge.”
She looked over to see Dominik standing by himself at the bridge, this time without his face mask. Before Dominik knew, she was making her way towards him.
Oh no. Please go back to Jin, his mind attempted to tell her telepathically, but clearly in vain.
“Hi?” she said, peeking at his eyes to see if he was pissed at her presence, “Mind if I share the bridge?”
The mask.
His hand fidgeted with his pocket to fish out his face mask, but something in his head told him to try and push himself this time.
“Sure,” he replied in a seemingly offhanded tone.
She stood beside him and brought out her phone to take pictures of the lake. “View’s lovely.”
“Mmhm.”
“Would you believe I was taking pictures earlier as an excuse to not look like a total noob?” she giggled, “I mean I was struggling to keep up but that was so weird of me. What the hell was I thinking there?”
“Pictures or not, you don’t have to worry because almost everyone here’s not local.”
“I see.”
Silence.
“Have you been here before?” she asked him.
“Ja.”
“Oh. Okay. That’s nice.”
More silence that she felt compelled to break.
“Anyhoo, are we allowed to sit here?”
“Yeah.”
She settled herself near one of the ropes that held the wooden planks up, legs dangling over the bridge. Dominik stayed still. “Yeah the height gap is very apparent right now,” said Kate, smiling up at him. He took the cue and sat down beside her. Gaining a closer look at his face, she noticed a large pale scar extending from his right temple, down his cheek, then above the corner of his lip, ending somewhere on his chin. There definitely was a major reason behind it, she pondered, one that was likely too heavy to ask. She shifted the topic in her head.
“If you don’t mind me asking, how did you and Hong-jin know each other?”
“Uhh…” he looked to Horangi for respite, but he was still far off in his zone taking selfies, not even sparing a moment to check outside his bubble. No backup now. “We met at work a few times. Been friends ever since,” he responded.
“Hmm, so you guys go a long way. What do you guys do anyway?”
Another pause. “Military.”
“Cool,” she remarked. That explained the matching crew cuts. She guessed from his hesitation that she shouldn’t ask for any more what’s or when’s. Quick, ask something else. “I’m guessing military life gets pretty crazy. Pays to take breaks like this one. From all the noise. If machines get to have a break, why can’t we?”
I appreciate the attempt to talk to me, but this strikes a chord—perhaps too hard, he thought. “Unless the job asks for you to really act like a machine, sometimes you have to be like one.”
“But then take a break, like a….machine would?” she replied.
He hummed. “Sure. Then take a break.”
Something in Kate felt triumphant in making him say something other than one-word replies. She rested her hands on the horizontal rope in front of her face and swung her legs absentmindedly. “Yeah. We’re just people. Gotta cope how you need to,” she began to ramble, “Whether that’s peace and quiet, or some good old adrenaline rush. There’s some of that in flying too, which I liked at first, but then the pressure of the job sinks in after a while. It’s like with yo—”
She stopped herself, it felt wrong to complain about her work pressures in front of a literal soldier. She continued, “Okay not really military life-or-death type, of course, but the amount of hard work you need to make it look easy. The smallest scratch on a plane, big incident. Then the first thing the board always points fingers at is the guys in front, know what I mean? Guess because it’s legally the easiest way out?”
Dominik only looked at her and took a short gasp of air, wanting to say something.
Nope. Might breach an NDA.
So he held himself back. Silence was once again shared between the two. But it was a more comfortable one this time, being filled in by the mountain breeze and rustles of greenery.
Suddenly, he spoke. “Adrenaline rush, huh? I supposed the motorbike matched your style.”
“Did it now? Yeah, I like the rush you get from that sorta stuff. A healthy kind of scare. Heck, I’d bungee jump from here right now if I could.” He moved to peek below the bridge. It was fairly far down, but it was layered with rocks from the stream and was too shallow to “bungee jump” from. “That doesn’t sound very healthy,” commented Dominik.
It earned him a snicker from her. “I’m kidding. But—dude,” she swung her head to look him persuasively in the eyes. “Bungee’s fun.”
“A guy my size—I’m probably safer jumping without a rope,” he replied, a smirk shyly peeking into the corners of his mouth. Kate observed that the man had a rather sweet smile. His lips pressed into a thin line, but his cheeks rose ever so slightly.
Her eyes secretly enjoyed lingering on his, admiring the soulful blue of his irises. She realized she may have misjudged him. He wasn’t as cold as she thought; only reserved, but nevertheless, a friendly guy with a long list of experiences that came with his work.
As much as she liked this man’s face, perhaps what she found more interesting was the warmth and tranquility of the moment. No crazy jitters, as if she was just talking to a friend.
Breaking her thoughts from spiraling mid-conversation, she opted to keep the ball rolling, scavenging for names of other extreme sports that involved jumping but had nothing to do with laying your life on a piece of rope. “Hmm, what about cliff diving? Wait, you ever done a jump like that before?”
“I’ve jumped out of a plane.”
Her interest in what he had to say grew, so she sat up straight and leaned a little towards him, “Ooooh, skydiving?” His eyes slightly widened. “Well—yeah skydiving.”
She furrowed her brows at that, then laughed in bewilderment. “Whoa there, why is something telling me it wasn’t just that? Oh my god, what did you do?”
He chuckled at her, flattered upon seeing her interest in what he can do. “I can’t tell. Although skydiving, rappelling down an aircraft…it’s part of the job.”
She hummed with a pout and planted her arms back on the wooden planks. “Wild. I like your style.”
“It’s the rush.”
“Right?” she replied. Man, this guy is cool. “Okay one more photo from here.” She snaps one last photo of the lake, before delicately tucking away her phone in a zipped pocket in her pants. “And yeah let’s keep that, don’t want my phone to fall.”
“You’re terrified of your phone falling but you’ll dive off this bridge?” he questioned her.
“My phone is incapable of saving itself. Though yeah I’m telling you, I’d freakin’ parkour here or something.” she teased, leaning slowly toward the ropes then watching for Dominik’s reaction. Only a face that reads, I’d like to see you try. She faked falling over the rope with a mocking shiver. Still nothing from him but mild amusement. “Tough guy,” she said slyly. His eyes narrowed.
“Ah, look at the time!” he exclaimed as he slapped his hands down on his thighs so aggressively that it made the whole bridge wobble. “Is Hong-jin done yet?” he grinned at her, pretending to be oblivious to her squealing and wrapping her legs around the vertical rope.
“Gago, Dominik!” she shrieked,” hands gripping tighter on the rope and laughing in defeat at his fairly scary retort.
He shook his head. “Okay, I’m sorry, bad joke,” he stood up, offering a hand to her.
She took his hand. “S’alright, it was actually pretty ironic, so touché.”
They walked out of the bridge and back to Hong-jin. “For someone who likes peace and quiet,” he pointed out, “you’re rather loud.”
“Dominik,” she glared up at him in disbelief, “You shook the damn bridge, what do you expect?”
“No, even during the climb. I could hear you even when you and Jin went ahead.”
“Oops. Should I be sorry?” her gaze fixated on the rocks they were walking on.
“Nah,” he drawled, “The energy’s nice. And call me Nik by the way.”
Hong-jin’s attention turned from his phone towards them at the sound of footsteps over the rocks. He got up, gave his friend a subtle glance then acknowledged Kate. Asking the two how the bridge view was, he read that both were now fairly at ease around each other. The three returned to the hut for some beer. They sat side-by-side at a long table overlooking the mountains. It was close to noon and a good amount of fog had dissipated.
Kate took a swig of her drink. “So you guys are heading back to Germany after this?” she asked, looking at Hong-jin who was next to her, then to Dominik.
Hong-jin responded, “Yeah. You?”
“Overnight here.”
“Oh. Enjoy your stay, then,”
“I will.”
She caught Dominik looking away and taking a huge drink from his mug.
They exchanged more stories and shared some laughs as they finished their drinks. Soon enough, Dominik and Hong-jin said they had to be on their way. They bid each other goodbye.
As she watched the two men walk away, she realized it was now or never, else she might not see them again.
“Them”? Please, it’s mostly Tall Boy you’re worried about, she told herself, You’re a tourist. Nobody knows you here. Go for it. What could go wrong?
“Wait!” she called their attention. They turned around and saw her briskly walking to them with her phone in her hand. Despite the fact that she was addressing both people, she looked mainly at Dominik as she spoke. “If you don’t mind, maybe we’ll catch up again, guess I could have your socials or something?” She quickly realized her eyes might incriminate herself and immediately looked at Hong-jin. “Or yours. Anyone, really, if we’re all hanging out next time.”
Dominik only stood, hesitant to take her phone as she offered it. “I don’t really have social media. But I suppose I can give you my number.”
Perhaps it was a good thing that neither of them saw Hong-jin twist his face in wry amusement over what Dominik just said.
She opened the phone app and handed her phone to Dominik, who typed in his number. She gestured to Hong-jin to type in his social media handles, which she followed right after.
“All right,” she said gleefully after pocketing her phone, “Guess we’ll chat around when we can. It was nice meeting you both.”
The other two nodded and smiled in agreement before saying goodbye to her again.
She bought lunch soon after, then after a hearty meal, she settled her things on the bed, and opened her phone to look at one of the newly saved contacts.
Dominik Brunner.
Pretty name, she mused. As odd as it felt for her to fixate on the details of someone she just met, she admitted that she liked how he seemed pretty outgoing underneath the timid front. She allowed the soft, warm glow slowly to creep up on her cheeks, silently savoring that small win she had for the day.

Summary: The Moon Knight system, now living in San Diego, decides to get back to nature after a mission investigating a human trafficking ring. Hiking in a national park in the mountains east of San Diego doesn't go as planned.
Notes: This is such an alternate universe. Seriously. It doesn't get much AU-ier than this! It's somewhere around 2010, the system and Jack are in their late 20s, and we've done a number on their backstories. Fun! We'll update tags as the story progresses.
-----------------------
Chapter 1: Well-Met
Out of all of the criminals Marc Spector had hunted down in his twenty-six years, he despised human traffickers the most. Although they weren’t the most depraved of those who’d received Khonshu’s justice by his or Jake’s hand, their calculating opportunism made his blood boil. These lowlifes were modern-day slavers. Following Khonshu’s orders regarding them wasn’t a problem.
One such lowlife by the name of La Araña was the reason why Marc had moved from London to San Diego last month. One of the reasons, really. Somehow Khonshu had learned about an explosion in human trafficking in the San Diego/Tijuana area and ordered him and Jake to cease Araña’s operations by any means necessary. The bird had ordered Steven as well, but the Brit has managed to talk his way out of it for the most part. Steven was smarter than the skeletal blowhard, much to his annoyance and Marc’s, Jake’s, and Steven’s amusement.
Rather than embark on a long-term mission, the system had decided to move back to the States. Although a few months had passed after their mother’s death and the Harrow/Ammit mess, they still felt off-kilter. Moreso than usual, anyway. A change of scenery would do them good, Steven and Jake thought.
Marc didn’t care either way. Life was pretty lousy no matter where you lived, so whatever. Their best friend Layla traveled constantly for archaeological or Taweret-related reasons, so they’d see her often. She and Frenchie were their—particularly Marc’s—rock. Thank god for cell phones.
Despite being at the top of a rocky ridge, Marc’s flip phone had no signal. He withheld a sigh as he swept his gaze around the arid, rugged landscape. He needed to get moving before the morning sun climbed higher in the sky. Somehow he’d forgotten to pack a hat in the small rucksack that Khonshu’s suit could absorb. Steven had wanted to experiment more to see exactly how much mass the moon god’s magic could manage. It sounded like a long and tedious process, so Marc vetoed it entirely. If it could fit in his Army rucksack, it would work. Simple.
After taking a long swig of water from his half-empty canteen, Marc stowed it, shouldered his pack, and started down the narrow animal trail that led down the steep, east-facing hillside and into the canyon below. They’d need water from the stream that had carved the deep, narrow valley by the time they got there. Water purification tablets would make it safe to drink.
A pulse of anxiety washed over him. This time Marc sighed. “What, Steven?”
Kinda steep, innit?
“Kinda. Jake and I hiked worse in the Army.”
Sure did, jefe.
Marc grinned; he hadn’t realized that Jake was awake. “You keeping an eye on things, Jake?”
He felt his headmate’s mental nod. Yup.
We’re not lost, Steven said as if reassuring himself. Marc said he knows where we are. I don’t see how, flying at night after our mission when there’s no moon and there’s hardly anything out here! How do pilots—
“Steven,” Jake and Marc said simultaneously. Marc continued, “Even if we were lost, which we’re not, it’s fine. We’re trained for this. Packed accordingly, and—”
You forgot a hat.
Jake chuckled as Marc grumbled under his breath. “I wanted a relaxing hike, Steven. This right now is the opposite of relaxing.”
Está bien, hermanito. We’ve got the suit, remember?
Steven chuckled. Right. One of you nudge me when we’re not on a cliff or if something interesting happens.
Marc grinned. “You got it, buddy.” He felt Steven retreat just in time for the first switchback. The footing was a bit dicey unless you were a mule deer. He’d manage, and if he didn’t the suit would save their ass again. The suit didn’t dull pain, so Marc focused on the rocky trail and enjoyed the wilderness stretching out in all directions.
Three hours later the sun was directly overhead and felt searing due to the thinner atmosphere at this elevation. Marc was halfway through his canteen of safe but gross-tasting purified stream water. He’d stripped off his T-shirt an hour earlier to act as an improvised headwrap/scarf to protect his scalp and the back of his neck. It was working, but allowing his rucksack straps to chafe on his shoulders. Most worryingly, the canyon floor was now sloping uphill. He’d been walking southwest as planned. Barrett Junction should be a half mile ahead and downhill.
Steven did the mental equivalent of a stretch and a yawn. We there yet, bruv?
“Getting close,” Marc hedged.
Jake chuckled softly.
Wot? Steven asked.
We’re—
“Do not, Jake.”
We’re what?
Marc sighed and rubbed his eyes. “Taking the scenic route.”
Jake laughed and soon was joined by Steven. It’s all scenic, mate!
Hold up, Jake said, and Marc halted. Despite sharing the same body, somehow Jake picked up on things before he and Steven did.
Marc looked and listened intently. Nothing was moving other than a few birds high overhead, but he heard something, just barely.
Jake stated, Vehicle. East.
Brilliant! Steven enthused as Marc darted behind a stand of pine-tree-like shrubs. What’re you doing? We can get a ride to civilization!
Gotta make sure he’s not a hostile.
Marc felt Steven virtually roll his eyes. You lot are paranoid. ‘E’s—or she, could be a woman, you know—prob’ly just out enjoying nature, but not lost like—
“WE’RE NOT LOST!”
The sound of the approaching engine quieted. “Hey!” a male voice called from the southeast. Maybe the canyon branched that way. “You need a hand? ¿Necesitas ayuda?”
Yes! Steven replied as if the guy could hear him.
Marc shushed his headmate so he could continue observing. Footsteps crunched on sand and gravel. Soon a slender man in a park ranger’s uniform stepped through an opening in the canyon wall and into view. His wide-brimmed hat shaded his face.
Feeling foolish, Marc shifted his weight to his other foot and debated waiting the ranger out. Maybe he should just summon the suit and fly off after all. He’d be a lot less sunburned that way.
The park ranger seemed to look right at Marc despite the evergreen shrubs hiding him. He started jogging toward him, calling “¿Estás herido? Are you hurt? I have a first aid kit in the jeep.” His English had a light Mexican accent.
Busted, Jake chortled as Steven snickered.
Wishing he’d never attempted a relaxing post-mission hike, Marc strode around the edge of the shrubby trees. “I’m okay, just…”
The ranger had halted about ten feet from him, close enough to make out his features despite the shade from his hat. He was drop-dead handsome, clean-shaven with tan skin and short dark hair. Seemed to be about Marc’s age and height.
Blimey, Steven murmured. Those eyes!
I thought you liked Layla, Jake said.
I do, Steven returned, but she doesn’t like any of us like that—
¡Gracias a Dios!
—and that’s fine, and I dunno, I’m still figuring things out so—
Shut. Up. Marc managed to say silently, if through gritted teeth. Mercifully, they listened.
The ranger—Russell per his name tag—tilted his head and frowned. “You’re sweating. That’s good.” He resumed walking toward him.
“Good?” Marc echoed, acutely aware that he was shirtless. Why did he care? He’d been in the army for crying out loud!
Russell smiled broadly. “You don’t have heat stroke. Do you have water?” Marc nodded. “Good.” He stretched one arm in the direction he’d come from and reached the other toward Marc’s shoulder but didn’t touch him. “Let me give you a ride back to wherever you’d parked. Was it the main lot, or one of the others?”
Marc found himself walking with the young man. “I, uh, was dropped off.”
Jake snorted.
Russell looked at him askance, then shrugged. “We’ll go to the station. It’s air-conditioned. You can rest, then go from there.” Marc nodded agreement.
They walked uphill along a short, narrow gap in the canyon wall heading east. Marc spotted the ranger’s dusty jeep parked near its mouth.
“Got a name?” Russell asked.
“Marc,” he replied.
Russell grinned. “Nice to meet you, Marc.” He put one hand on his stomach. “Jack.”
Steven chuckled, which made Marc frown. What? he asked.
“Yes, like the dog,” Jack said with a brilliant smile. “It wasn’t intentional.” He stopped walking, so Marc followed suit, abruptly realizing they’d reached the jeep. His situational awareness had gone to shit for some reason.
Jack’s brow furrowed again. He motioned at the passenger side of the jeep. “Go ahead, get in. It’s a half hour drive on rough roads to the station, so be sure to drink some water. I’ve got jerky and trail mix if you need something to eat.”
Marc nodded again and did so, putting on his shirt after setting his rucksack in the back seat. Jack steered the jeep further east, then turned north on a rutted jeep trail. They were headed in the opposite direction he’d intended to go, not that it mattered. He caught Jack’s eye and waved southwest. “How much further was Barrett Junction?”
Jack’s eyebrows shot up as smile crept across his face. “That’s where you were headed?”
“Yeah.” Marc felt his headmates’ amusement loud and clear.
“I’m glad I found you,” Jack said, now serious. “Eight miles as the crow flies, but with this terrain? No offense, but I don’t think you’re prepared for it. And there’s no backcountry permits issued for this area right now. You shouldn’t be here.”
“Oh.” Marc faced forward, stared out the windshield, and tried to ignore Steven’s and Jake’s laughter. “I’ll be sure to get a permit in the future.”
Jack nodded, glancing at him out of the corner of his eye. “They’re for safety more than anything. It’s not good to do this stuff alone. I love it out here, but have to admit it can be dangerous. There are predators.”
“Yeah,” Marc agreed, his thoughts returning to La Araña. With the border only a few miles to the south, the trafficker may have routes nearby. For a moment Marc considered asking Jack if he’d heard of Araña, but decided otherwise. If anything he might seem suspicious, being in a remote area of the park near the border without a permit. So he drank more of the bitter-tasting water from his canteen, and waited to return to civilization.
Look at ‘im, bruv.
Marc didn’t on general principle and to not be weird; Jack was navigating a tooth-rattlingly rough section of road. Why?
‘Cos I want to see him. He’s cute!
Dios, Jake moaned. It’s Layla all over again.
Would that be so bad? Steven countered. She’s brilliant! A good mate.
Marc sighed. Enough. It’s not like we’ll be out this way again.
Unless we want to go on another relaxing hike, Steven said. I’d say this is the perfect place to go!
Jake drawled, Try not to get lost, jefe.
Marc tried to lean the back of his head against the headrest, but the lurching jeep made that impossible. I hate you guys.
You don’t, Steven returned, affection clear in his words.
Marc returned it, smiling. I don’t.

Tumblr media
Do you know a James? I don't.
Have you ever been to Australia? If not, would you like to? I haven't. It's not somewhere I'm especially interested in visiting, but I wouldn't be opposed to it either if the right opportunity presented itself.
Have you ever been diagnosed with a mental illness? Yeah.
If you had to choose to have a different accent than the one you have now, what accent would you choose and why? Probably a Southern American accent. Idk, I just feel like it would fit my vibe.
New York or California? California. Mainly for the natural aspects.
Have you ever or do you currently live in a Gated Community? I don't.
Who was your last text from? It was from my dad. A reply to my text letting him know that I was on the way home from the shelter yesterday evening.
Do you know how to use a DSLR camera? I've never used one before. I've only ever owned point-and-shoot cameras.
If you had to choose one instrument to perfect, what instrument would you choose? Guitar seems the most versatile, but perfecting the harp or violin would be pretty cool too.
Have you ever owned an Axolotl? I haven't.
What has been the longest amount of time you’ve spent on a plane? Maybe a couple of hours.
How often do you use Snapchat? Never.
What does your last text say? It's just a random key smash. It's kind of a joke between us at this point.
Have you ever played Habbo? I haven't.
What about Runescape? No.
Have you ever heard of the band Mumford & Sons? If yes, do you like their music? I've probably heard a song or two, and yeah, I think I'd enjoy them if I listened to them more.
Have you ever kissed anyone starting with the letter A, C, N, T or K? I've kissed an A, C, and N.
Have you ever used Valium before? No.
What time is it where you’re from? 7:49am. I'm trying to fit in (at least part of) a survey while I eat breakfast because after this I have to take a shower and get ready to go to therapy.
Have you ever adopted an animal from an animal shelter? Yes. I've adopted four kitties from the animal shelter where I volunteer.
Where do you usually find Surveys from? The people I follow. I used to snag a lot of them from Bzoink, but that's not a thing anymore. :'(
Australia or New Zealand? I don't have enough of an interest in either place to have a preference.
Have you ever missed a flight? No.
What is your best friend’s middle name? Blah.
How do you feel about the passing of Aretha Franklin? I don't think I was even aware of it when it happened.
Did you enjoy any of her music? Again, I probably would if I gave it more of a listen.
What is your favourite film from your childhood? Watership Down. That movie traumatized me, but I was obsessed with it all the same…
Kanye West or Drake? Neither.
Do you know anyone who is named after a state? I don't.
What was the reason for your previous doctor’s visit? It was just a check-up.
Have you ever been to an outdoor cinema? Not since I was a child/teen.
Have you ever had a “bad trip”? If yes, what happened? I've had a few bad experiences with weed (mostly just feeling really dizzy and out of it), but as for a bad trip, no; my one and only shrooms trip was pretty amazing.
How often do you use Instagram? I update it every few days or so. Mostly with kitty pictures from the shelter.
Have you ever smoked a cigarette? Yeah.
If so, do you still smoke? Yeah.
What are you up to tomorrow? Hopefully visiting the Mountain Park with my dad, and - if he's feeling up to it - perhaps a short hike.
What type of questions do you like being asked during a survey? I prefer questions about my day-to-day life because I use surveys as a form of journaling. Questions like "when was the last time you did X or felt Y, etc" are usually good as well. I'm not a huge fan of specific questions like "do you watch this show, listen to this band, etc."
Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey? No preference.
What is your favourite Ben Stiller movie? I think the only ones I've seen are Zoolander, Anchorman, and Meet The Parents. Can't say I have a favorite, though.
What is your favourite Spotify playlist if you have one? N/a.
Firefox or Chrome? I just use Microsoft Edge.
Do you enjoy learning about conspiracy theories? I used to be obsessed with conspiracy theories (it was bad, lmao). I still enjoy them occasionally, but to a lesser (and far less gullible) extent.
If so, what is your favourite? These days, probably anything involving aliens/UFOs. Again, not in the sense that I believe them at face value, but the lore behind them - how they came about, who was involved, what's fact, what's fiction, etc. It's just such an interesting, convoluted web of deception and weirdness.
Do you find hand tattoos attractive on your preferred sex? Depends.
If you had a baby boy, what would you name him? Abe Ortion. <- Lmao. I was just starting to think what an odd name that was, but then--!!
What is your favourite Netflix original series? I don't have one.
Have you ever owned a Tamagotchi? Yeah.
Do you have a favourite “survey blog” on Tumblr? If so, who? Pretty much everyone I follow who updates often + gives somewhat detailed answers. If I regularly like your surveys, then you're one of those people. :')
Would you rather be 10 minutes late or 20 minutes early? 20 minutes early. The thought of being late makes me anxious.
If you could be a member of any TV-Sitcom family, which would it be? No thanks.
Tell me about the 6th person in your contact list: N/a.
Are you waiting for a text back right now? No.
Would you rather be able to control fire or water? I guess water.

3 Steps Forward, 2 Steps Back
Or at least that's how this reno is going. I'm pretty sure we've been to and from D2 (think like Home Depot) around 4 times a day every day for the last week and we still have little to show for it. Le sigh.
Tumblr media
Anyway, adventure and exploration!
Tumblr media
A couple nights ago, I did a wander around the local neighborhood. It wasn't exactly late, but the sun rises and sets about an hour different here compared to the US. What this made for was an excellent spooky shot of the nearby shrine.
On Sunday, the weather was nice (but very windy!) and I took quite the long walk - from a Starbucks overlooking the bay all the way out to Kannonzaki Park and back. I had hoped to go swimming but the winds and waves basically said no way. Have some pictures!

Behold, the über tree!
Tumblr media
The view from somewhere along the trail.
The park was quite fun and is full of wartime remnants, the lighthouse I posted above, a nature museum, and plenty of things I didn't have time to see. There are many, many stairs as it covers some pretty major hills, so be sure you're up for the task if you're gonna hike it. Not the worst trails I've been on, but certainly not easy if you're not used to hiking. By the time I made it home, it was late evening and my legs were aching. Totally worth it.

East Quebec: Côte Nord
Due to the 24-hour boat delay from Blanc-Sablon, I end up doing a beautiful hike along the Pioneer Footpath, a coastal trail between the villages, by walking around 4k from L'Anse au Clair towards Forteau and then back again (one-way between the villages is 15k which is too much for me). The sun ☀️ was finally shining so the cliffs, sea and icebergs 😍 looked even more magnificent! The iceberg that I had taken a picture of the day before (see previous post) had been shattered though into pieces, presumably because of the higher solar radiance. It shows how quickly nature can change!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the afternoon, I dropped off my car at the ferry terminal so that I didn't need to be there at 3am to get the car loaded into the container, and instead could show up at 6.30 - a much more reasonable time! 🙃 I got a lift back to the hotel from two Welsh friends who recommended a cute café for dinner, so ended up having great conversations with them over tomato soup & a glass of wine 😃.
Next morning, we can finally walk onto the Bella, the Relais Nordik cargo ship that also functions as a cruise for tourists who want to see the villages that it stops at. I can't see my own car, but presume it's stacked somewhere in the containers! 🤞 There was as usual fog to start with, so we were treated on a slide presentation on the underwater life of the Fleuve Saint Laurent (we have here the 2nd largest shark in the world - the basking shark which only eats plankton), until a pod of 10 humpback whales was spotted so everyone rushed out to watch them. It wasn't very warm to sit outside for a long time, but the lounge area had big windows to spot icebergs, birds & two porpoises. 😊
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the afternoon, there was a brief stop at the village of La Tabatière, where, fully covered to defeat the black flies, I had a pretty view of the coastline. Thereafter, there was another presentation on local flora, including a tasting of labrador tea and local jams. And in the evening, I joined the Welsh for an elaborate lobster dinner... not too shabby this boat crossing! 😊
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although the chair in which I was huddled in my sleeping bag was very comfortable, I didn't sleep much, and when at 4:30am a new group of people boarded over a magnificent sunrise that was the end of it... after a refreshing shower and with a calm sea, it was however not a chore 😉 to sit for a few more hours in the lounge taking in the scenery until the boat would arrive at Kegashka, where the road starts again.
Tumblr media
The offloading of cars, trailers, ATVs, kayaks, lawnmowers etc etc took ages so I waited 2 hours to finally see my car being craned down, but the time was spent chatting with the other passengers... it's funny that even after only a day it seems like the entire boat knows each other and people take selfies, exchange numbers and hug; Quebecois are very friendly!
This is the eastern terminus of route 138 which starts in Quebec City over a 1,000km away and which I'll need to drive in its entirety, so I better get going!😜 It was hot & humid though and I had trouble focusing on the (first 40k unpaved) road, so ended up laying down in the car for a bit at a pretty rest stop to recover some energy. In the evening, I walked along the promenade at Havre-Saint-Pierre, watching seals, terns and harbour porpoises go after their food (it was so quiet I could hear the porpoises breaching) until I got hungry myself and had a delicious fish dinner overlooking the sea... when I saw the Bella arrive... Walking back to the hotel I ran into the Welsh couple again, a small world!
Tumblr media
Next morning, I'm up & ready at 7:45 with a cup of tea and lots of warm clothes for a 6-hour boat excursion to the eastern islands of the Mingan Archipelo national park. The islands are known for their rock monoliths that border their shores, and the first one, Île du Fantôme, didn't disappoint! The interpreter explained how they're formed and gave names to the various formations (like "the Sphynx" or "horse drinking water") but that often needed a healthy dose of imagination. 😉
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second island, Île Niapiskau, has a few impressive, larger monoliths that stand stark on the shore but also has some inland in between the trees, indicating that the sea level (responsible for the tidal erosion) used to be much higher when the land had not rebounded yet from the glacial retreat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We stayed 2 hours on the final island, Île Quarry, where I walked via a detour along the coast to the monoliths rather than cutting directly through to the other side. The sun had come through and suddenly it was warm again! Beautiful cliffs & rock formations, the smell & sound of the sea... what else is there to say? 😊
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was a great trip and I recommend anyone to make the trek sometime to this remote part of the country (PS I believe all tours are in French so having a basic understanding is essential)!
Once back on shore, I made my way to Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan half an hour west, which acts as the base for exploring the western islands. Enroute, I visit the Maison de la Culture Innu, which has high-quality, interactive exhibits about the Innu who inhabited these lands first. I learned that they have actually a strained relationship with Parks Canada who manages the islands, as they're now no longer allowed to go there to hunt ducks and seals or collect eggs & berries, something they've done for centuries... as an Innu woman put it; "we're suddenly tourists in our own home". It shows how important (and difficult) it is to try to understand all sides of a story.
Having checked into the motel, I realized the village is even tinier than I thought; the one restaurant was closed (Havre-Saint-Pierre had 2 restaurants that were both open), but luckily the gas bar which ran out of gas 😂, did also have a grocery store so I got a Ceasar salad, chicken & cheese to eat on my room while the laundry was running.
I ran out of my picture allowance for this post, too much pretty nature to show 😎, so will continue in the next one.
Icebergs: 5 (on the boat)
Wildlife: 10 humpback whales, 2 harbour porpoises (on the boat), 6 seals (1 grey), 3 porpoises, 6 terns & 2 loons (at Havre-Saint-Pierre), 2 harbour seals, 1 grey seal, 1 porpoise (at the east Mingan archipelo)
SUPs: none
Hikes: one at L'Anse au Clair, one at La Tabatière, one at Île Quarry

life is funny
It’s funny how we think we are stuck in our current situation!! I mean reading back through all my posts I can see how fucking lonely and desperate for affection I was. Guess what bittttttcccchhhh, I’m still lonely but in a different way. Well it’s cuz I don’t have friends! The guy I was talking about in my last post , we got married!!! He is my best friend and I love the fucking shit out of him!!! I am so grateful for this man!!!! We have been together for almost 6 years and married almost 2 years!! I feel like I have everything I always wanted. Now here comes the issues. Only 2 though, not too bad. So the issues are 1. We are broke. 2. No baby. So both of us aren’t career driven and want to be on vacation all the time. We don’t know how to sustain that lifestyle we want. It’s expensive as fuck in Cali. So we want to move to Oregon cuz it’s cheaper and pretty as fuck!!!! And now we have credit card debt we need to pay off. And we had to move out of our apartment and parked a 24 ft trailer in my dad’s backyard with 3 fucking dogs!!! I have one more month to pay my dad back and then we can start paying off the credit cards. So to move we don’t have to completely pay off the credit cards but enough to have decent credit to get an apartment. I’m so tired of living at my dads with all these fucking old men!!! I miss having my own space and privacy!!like it hurts my soul!!! But soon we will move. #2 a baby! Well I have had 2 miscarriages within our relationship (never had any pregnancy scares before). The miscarriages were honestly devastating. *I wish my mom was more of an emotional mother. I could of used her at that time. * but I’ve had tests and they said I can have a baby and idk about Daniel. He never did his testing. So the dilemma is should I try for a baby or just not have any kids? I’m 33 which is already old for having kids but it’s not impossible. But also kids are so expensive and I don’t know how we can support the kids. Like I’ve always wanted kids but I feel I grew up living in a fairytale mind. Like I thought I would just lose weight, never happened, I thought I would get pregnant right away after getting married, never happened. Now that I’m older I realize that to do anything you need to have money. My parents can’t support me and I barely know how to support myself!! It’s crazy. I wonder what my situation would be in another 5 years. I’m honestly excited to face life’s challenges. I love feeling involved emotionally and experiencing new things. That’s why I can’t have a regular job and why I just want to be a fucking nomad. But that shit is also expensive!!!!! I just don’t know. Sometimes I have such bad adhd paralysis. Like today all I want to do is go for a nature walk. I looked through all trails at a bunch of hikes but I know the scenery is gonna be boring to me and I would have to drive 2 hours to go somewhere half way decent. Plus I’m alone cuz Daniel is at work. So I’m just waiting for my phone to charge. But I have to walk cuz I need to exercise. So I’ll probably just walk around my neighborhood for a while. This is another reason I want to move. Imagine in Oregon everything will be new and exciting!!! Forests, mushrooms, ferns, all the creatures, lakes, rivers, agates!! Like there is so much!!! So for today I guess I’ll go for a walk, get poke, do laundry, and idk maybe make something from clay.

Good bad & ugly: Isle of Skye
The good
Planning your trip around your top sights- The isle is much bigger than you might think. Trying to see everything in 1 day would be really challenging, especially when you consider times driving to/from just the mainland. Have a plan! Figure out what your top things to see are, and then plan in smaller things around them as you can sorting by location. Be prepared to be flexible in case parking lots or roads are busy or in case you just spend longer than you plan somewhere. I spent 2 full days + 2 days driving there and back, and while that worked well I honestly kinda wish I’d had at least 1/2 a day more.
Staying near sites you really want to see- I lucked into this one a bit. I knew one of my stays was near the fair glen but I didn’t really realize how near till I arrived. This made seeing the fair glen at dusk/dawn much much more feasible than it would have been otherwise.
The old man of storr - I’m biased here since this is the thing I came to see, but it was great to get to finally see it in person! But I can see why it might not be on everyone’s list, and I do wish I’d been warned more about the stairs.
The weather - I had a great mix of sunny, gloomy, rainy, which was great for me! Obviously the weather in Scotland is very unpredictable so there’s no guarantee for any kind of weather. If you have your heart set of a certain kind, book for the season with the best odds, be prepared to be flexible and maybe just give it 5 min to see if it changes.
The Quiraing - this hike was stupid levels of gorgeous (really really good).
General natural beauty - the whole island was very pretty
The bad
Car issues - if you’ve been following along this isn’t a surprise. The car I rented got hit while I was off seeing a castle- never good. While it was not near as bad as it might have been, it’s never a fun thing to deal with. I’m also pretty frustrated with how the help line handled it.
Drive times on google- Driving 2 and from Isle of Skye was a good 2 hours more than it said on the map. Driving ON isle of Skye always seemed to be x2 what it said. I think a big part of this is google does not make a distinction between non-local vs local drive times, and the locals are going MUCH faster on those curves than I ever could.
Not planning enough time for the drive back - not just in terms of planned hours, but in terms of feeling like I could take it slow, take more breaks, be flexible. I took the northernmost route back, and the road was really pretty, it would have been nice to be able to pull over more. I also would have liked to have been able to have the flexibility to enjoy the sunny weather on the island that morning. In fairness, I also had good weather for the majority of this drive, I might have been less inclined to want to do extra stops without it.
Lack of lodging options- I quite liked my stays on isle of Skye, that said, I didn’t book lodging/the whole trip as far in advance as I should have and one of the major drawbacks to that was that lodging fills up FAST! I literally only had 1-4 options and that was WITH splitting my stay up while I was there. As it was, I for sure ended up paying more than I normally would have for lodging. I’m very sure it’s worse on the weekends and in the high season (summer).
The ugly/to be aware of that may not be obvious
The lack of resources - Isle of Skye is fairly remote. It has 1 major town. This really limits your options for food, water, gas, and bathrooms. I fortunately was aware of this beforehand and was able to plan around it, but I could see it catching folks unaware if they are not careful.
With gas I did my best to fill up when I could, trying to never let it go below a 1/2 tank to be safe. This was wise! At one point I tried to fill up, only to be told that both stations in Portree were out of gas till the next shipment arrived. Thank goodness I didn’t really need gas at that point and could wait a while for the next change.
Food and water- there are sometimes options for drinks and maybe light food at stalls around the island, but there is no guarantee these will be open! Restaurants are spread out and often close early. Since I have food allergies and did not want to risk being miles from food I could eat I went the route of going to a supermarket and getting peanut butter and jelly supplies + snacks for my trip. If you do have a place you want to eat beforehand be sure to check their times (a lot of places were closed Monday or between lunch and dinner) and maybe make a reservation. The fish and chips place on the harbor in Portree is great, but did only take cash. Not sure how true that might be for other casual eateries there. There are absolutely fancier options as well, I just did not choose to try and find them.
Bathrooms - this one was the best of the 3 imo, but you have to know what to look for. Gas stations will not have bathrooms, so keep an eye out when you stop for other things. Towns often have public toilets. Trail heads may or may not have the option for a toilet. On the longer drives, I planned stops around where public toilets were more than once.
Navigation while driving - Pro-tip! Don’t try to send you car to the name of the actual place, especially if it involves a bit of a hike from the parking lot. This just seems to cause confusion and may tell you that you are somewhere when you seem to just be driving past it. Navigate to the parking lot of the place you’re trying to get to instead!
Laundry + Packing - This is really obvious in hindsight. But packing still damp hiked in clothing into my suitcase so I could leave early would have made such a mess of things if i had not been able to do laundry (the gym bag stink was real). In the future I think I will bring some trash bag options for dirty clothes to help keep them as isolated as possible if I am at a location where this is also a possibility.
Fairy pools - honestly these were just a bit of a let down/ felt a bit over hyped. I still think they might be better under better conditions. Do be aware the road to them can be very muddy. I was unable to see them day 1 (which is a shame since they were on the way in) due to 2 vehicles getting stuck in the mud and blocking the road for everyone. If it does not say passing place don’t treat it like one!
Crowds- I was very lucky and did not have any issues with this, but even with my brief stay I heard some horror stories about how bad it can get, especially in the summer. Neist point especially is usually much worse apparently.
Parking- You have to pay for parking. I thought I’d need more cash for this, but most of the machines took credit cards. Parking is also limited, so having the flexibility to try again at a different time or circle can be helpful.
make sure you know how to call internationally - I thought I knew this, but I think it changes with either different carriers or maybe different countries?
