Heroes, Villains, and Blorbos

Being a fan of both Snape and the Marauders is fun, in that -- okay that's a lie, it's not fun really. So few people I know actually like both sides. Most people I know pick a side and stick with it.

Why is that? I figure it's one, or both, of two things. One: each side attracts a certain sort of person that will naturally disdain the other side. Two: by loving one, you must hate their enemies.

Love makes us blind, though, doesn't it? We defend our faves to the bitter end. That's a bit harder to manage when what I love about all of these characters are...well...their faults.

The Marauders

Their story is quite admirable, isn't it? It's fun! Four very close, loyal friends. Friends who go to great lengths for one another, and go on grand adventures together.

At the helm: two privileged boys. James and Sirius were born with pure blood and wealth. James, the only son of two older parents. Sirius, the heir of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black. Both handsome and charming. Both big, bold personalities.

Then Remus, of course. Their quiet, patient, studious housemate turned friend. And Peter, accused of gravitating to those bigger and stronger than himself. But that's a bit unfair, I think. Peter had something to offer; something that drew him to, and kept him with the Marauders.

You have the full range in the Marauders. The "too cool for school" Sirius. James, the Quidditch star (and eventual Head Boy!) Remus the responsible prefect. Peter, the sweetheart (he did seem rather sweet in those earlier days.)

More than that: they were highly intelligent and skilled. They deduced Remus' secret. They sneaked out and explored. They created the Marauder's Map! Not only a feat of magic, but requiring knowledge of cartography and knowledge of the grounds! They cared for their friend enough to become Animagi -- advanced magic they were self-taught in and accomplished without anyone being the wiser for it!

Competency is sexy, okay? Of course people are drawn to the Marauders!

There is so much good in them. Their capacity for friendship and loyalty. How driven they are by their values. All they worked for just to help Remus through full moons. James opening his home to Sirius when he needed to escape his family. They kept each other's secrets. They relied on one another.

It was this sense of goodness, I think, that drove them to such heinous acts. It's the only thing that makes sense to me.

Sirius, disillusioned by his family, standing against all they stood for. James, of the Main Character Syndrome, and a desire to play hero. They were all sorted into Gryffindor, sharing values of bravery and chivalry. They would go on to join the Order of the Phoenix and fight in the war effort right after graduating. Setting aside Peter (with his unknown background and motivations; not knowing when or why he turned on his friends), they all had a sense of their morals and a willingness to abide by them. They all had a sense of right and wrong.

But think: for all of their goodness, they were troublemakers and lawbreakers. They were above the rules. Due to ego and entitlement in some ways (especially for our privileged James and Sirius), but also a sense of righteousness. They were young boys chasing adventure and playing hero. They were unregistered Animagi, remember: but for a good cause!

They were also bullies.

For a good cause, of course! Snievellus deserved it. A strange, intense boy. A Slytherin. For knowing more curses in his first year than most seventh years. (For knowing; not using.) For existing.

"They were just kids"; it's not an excuse, but a place to begin to understand. They were young. They were ignorant and immature. People also fear what they don't understand. This is why people who are "different" are so often "othered" and mistreated.

A hostile first interaction, on all sides, and they painted Severus as a "villain." And it's up to heroes to bring down villains, isn't it?

One hostile, first meeting and James tried to trip Severus. One interaction and he was already resorting to physical harm. And the trend would continue. Public humiliation, sexual assault, and a near death experience. Four wizards routinely targeting and tormenting one.

They were arrogant, cruel, and judgmental (primarily James and Sirius), or passive and enabling (more Remus and Peter.)

Their behavior was reprehensible and inexcusable.

The Half-Blood Prince

Of course, Severus Snape was no angel himself.

Like the Marauders, Severus was intelligent, skilled, and accomplished. Unlike them, Severus wasn't privileged. He was a half-blood. He was raised in poverty; raised in neglect and abuse. He wasn't blessed with good looks or charm. He was bitter, odd, obsessive.

He was a wizard trapped in a dingy, Muggle town, raised by a magic-hating Muggle of a father. Petunia called him "that awful Snape boy."

Lily was the first spot of brightness in his life. His first connection to magic, and kindness. When it was time for them to attend Hogwarts, life was meant to improve. He was going to be with Lily; he was going to escape.

Instead Severus walked out of one trauma, and right into another.

Separated from his best friend. Targeted from day one. Overlooked in favor for his more likeable and attractive peers. He was brilliant, and dedicated, and ambitious. He worked hard. He did great things. He improved potions and invented spells.

Control and power would appeal to people like Severus. People who have never had either. People who have been crushed beneath the boots of people in control, and in power.

When he nearly walked into his death, there was no real consequences for his attackers. And he was forced into silence.

Of course Severus was bitter. And of course he was tempted.

Severus went down the wrong path. And he befriended the wrong people. He invented a heinous curse. He used a slur against his best friend. There is no excuse for Severus. No reason to forgive his sins. But we can understand them, can't we? We can understand what might drive a person to such extremes, such horrors.

Changed Men

These were young people growing up in the time of war. And the moment they were able, they chose their sides.

Peter is the most interesting case to explore. What drove him to betraying his friends? When did he decide this? Was he always a rat? Or did time in his friends' shadows twist him? Was it a big event that turned him?

Sirius would lose his best friend and be falsely imprisoned. He managed to escape the inescapable Azkaban, driven by the need to protect Harry. He opened his home to the Order. He was open to doing more; he felt compelled to offer more than anyone would take. Sirius was troubled, of course, traumatized not only by loss of loved ones, but the loss of his freedom. Exposed to Dementors for years and years. He never had the chance to really grow up. But he remained strong, and dedicated. He remained clever, and strong, and willing to fight.

Remus faced many hardships through his life. He lost all of his friends in one fell swoop. The love and support he'd been blessed with, now gone. Trudging through life in a world that judged and feared him. He kept going with grace and compassion, in spite of all he endured. He was patient and wise. He was a supportive teacher. He was also careless, and put many lives at risk by not taking his potion. He nearly abandoned his wife and unborn child. Remus was a great, but imperfect man.

James learned and grew bit by bit. He matured. He put in the effort to be a better person. He saved Severus' life. He pranked and bullied less often. He became Head Boy. He saw enough growth to earn that title, despite his troubled past, and despite not making prefect. He saw enough growth that Lily saw him in a new light. And at the tender age of twenty-one he lost his life to protect his wife and son.

Severus had the biggest task of all. He (likely) committed atrocities as a Death Eater. But when he realized how wrong he had been, he was strong enough to change. Too few people own up to their mistakes and are willing to change. Severus had to face how truly horrendous his choices had been. He had to change his whole belief system. And, again, so young, he put his life at risk by entering Dumbledore's service and turning spy on Voldemort. He remained in a job he hated for years and years. And when Voldemort returned, Severus returned to his terrible duty. Was he a nice man? No. But he was brave. He was strong. He worked hard to atone for his mistakes. He was forever haunted by the horrors of his life. And he died, unappreciated and unrecognized for all he had done.

None of them were perfect. All of them had potential.

So much of their promise died in the war. They were all so damn young, and so deeply impacted. They all made grave mistakes. They all achieved great feats.

But what draws me to them all above all else is the horrible humanity of them. All of their virtues, and especially all of their flaws.

Early Wolfstar Fandom vs. Today

I'm going to use @chdarling's response to an ask earlier about Remus and Sirius both being "messy, troubled, imperfect characters" and the effect that would have on any sort of relationship between them as a jumping off point to talk about changing trends within the Wolfstar fandom over the past 22 years that I've noticed. I'm specifically going to focus on 1999 to 2005ish and then compare that era to today.

Please (respectfully) chime in if you disagree with anything or have something to add! I would love to learn more, especially from those who were active in the fandom at that time!

Disclaimers

These are just my observations as a longtime Wolfstar/Jily/Marauders fan who has recently spent some time mucking around in Wolfstar spaces from the aughts/noughties. I have not made any attempt to review Wolfstar fandom history in any sort of comprehensive or systematic way before spouting off like I know something in this post. Also, I wrote this on a whim after dinner, so please forgive any mistakes/sparse sourcing.

My Qualifications (?)

I started dipping my toe into HP fanfic spaces as a reader in 2005. My understanding of fandom has been shaped by the time I've spent on MuggleNet Fan Fiction, FFN, LiveJournal, AO3, Reddit, and Tumblr. If you've seen this post about fandom generations, I sort of straddle the "I was there Gandalf" and Citrus Cheesecake generations. I'm much too young to have participated in online fandom when the ship first sprang into being in 1999 with the publication of PoA. Most of what I know (or think I know) about early/mid-2000s fandom comes from later efforts to locate fics from that period (see above) and learn about fandom history.

State of the Early Fandom

Wolfstar was a Serious Adult Ship for Serious Adult Writers

Older fans of the Harry Potter series were naturally more drawn to the adult characters and their relationships than those of us who were reading the books as children. I at least heavily identified with Hermione as a child and grew to love Remus and Sirius more in my teens. Therefore, ships like Wolfstar that featured characters who were adults in the series attracted a much higher proportion of adult authors than ships like Harmony or Hinny did at the time. (Remember, we didn't get our one real glimpse of the teenage Marauders until OOTP, which came out in 2003—four years after Remus and Sirius were introduced in POA and six years after the first book was published.)

A lot of people wrote Wolfstar as a messy relationship between adults with complicated pasts. That was the whole point for these authors—it's what drew them to the ship. Plenty of Wolfstar writers, such as busaikko, wrote both Remus/Sirius and Remus/Snape (or Sirius/Snape).

Marauders/MWPP-era Wolfstar was relatively less common at this point, and the long Marauders-era epics rarely included Wolfstar. There was a Marauders/Jily fandom and there was a Wolfstar/broader HP slash fandom, with limited crossover, though I should note that this split was the result of broader fandom trends than just the higher average age of Wolfstar authors.

I'm not super confident on this point, but I don't think the ship really took off among teens until it was popularized with a broader audience by The Shoebox Project (2004-2008), which is set in their Hogwarts years and also includes broader Marauders gen and Jily plots. That fic was able to pull people from both sides of the fandom interested in these characters.

Remus and Sirius's canon story was unfinished

You can clearly see the shifts between post-PoA, post-GoF, post-OotP, post-HBP, and post-DH fics featuring Wolfstar. Everyone wrote their take on what happened when Sirius went to "lie low at Lupin's" after GoF came out. OotP gave Wolfstar shippers a ton to work with between that year they lived in Grimmauld Place and Sirius's death, and those events were fresh and raw for authors. They're what writers had Opinions about and wanted to "fix" or explore. HBP, of course, threw a bit of a wrench in things by confirming Remadora was canon, but Wolfstar shippers (obviously) carried on by either disregarding Remadora entirely or writing Remus as bisexual (previously more of a Sirius thing).

I'll add here that before Remadora, a lot of readers thought Wolfstar was canon—the thought was that JKR couldn't have openly written a same-sex relationship into the biggest children's book series in the world so she'd limited herself to subtext and hints for the discerning reader to pick up on. Obviously, we now know this wasn't her intention, but it's a completely legitimate and easily understandable reading of the text. Wolfstar is the only queer Harry Potter ship with years of history of readers thinking it was intended to be canon. See the first meta post below for more!

Fic Trends Then vs. Now

A heavy ship lightens up

As a result of both of these factors, and probably others I haven't thought of, I'd say, overall, Wolfstar was portrayed in a much more dysfunctional, sometimes toxic way than the softer, sweeter Wolfstar relationship that's popular now. People wanted to explore Remus and Sirius's trauma and difficult past together without necessarily healing them or resolving their issues. Post-Hogwarts fics were more common, and there was a lot of enthusiasm about writing missing moments from the most recent book or speculating about what was in store for Remus and Sirius. Modern/non-magical AUs were a relatively niche genre given the focus on developments in canon; they've really skyrocketed in popularity in the past 10 years.

As someone who started out in Jily/Marauders gen spaces before discovering Wolfstar, I want to stress the massive tonal differences between the two communities during this time. Jily and Marauders gen was a fun romp, pretty clearly written by teens and young adults, that focused a lot on teen dramas and relationships. The older Wolfstar authors spent more of their time trying to tackle serious themes in a serious way. They liked to pepper in a lot of literary references, and the comment sections often turned into deep literary analyses that I personally found very intimidating and never participated in!

It's been interesting to watch the Jily/Marauders fandom shift in a slightly more serious and complicated direction as the Wolfstar fandom has moved in the opposite direction. This trend toward the middle has coincided with a greater blending of the two groups into a more integrated Wolfstar/Jily/Marauders community. It's wild to compare the proportion of long Marauders-era fics that feature Wolfstar alongside Jily now vs. back then.

Accessible writing wins out

I've noticed that the average fic length in the early years seemed to be a lot shorter than in recent years. One-shots used to be the dominant format—maybe they still are, but if so it's to a lesser degree. I’m not sure whether this is a Wolfstar- or HP-specific trend or whether it’s indicative of a broader shift in fanfic. If I had to guess, I'd say one of the drivers of the length differences is the shift from slash fics in particular mostly existing on sites that were set up in such a way that each chapter had to be a separate post (e.g. LiveJournal) to primarily being housed on AO3, where it’s easier to read and write multi-chaptered fics and really long chapters.

Style-wise, there's been shift toward a more straightforward writing style compared to the lyricism common in the early days. Again, this is on the macro level! There are still plenty of Wolfstar writers today who write in a more poetic style. I just think there seems to be a bit more directness with narrative and storytelling now than in the past. The differences in average author age and word count may have something to do with it, or perhaps this is just aligned with broader writing trends in the past 20 years. I'd love to hear from someone who actually took a literature course in college/university on this one!

Old Ship Meta Posts

These are sadly hard to track down these days, but if you're interested in learning more I highly recommend checking out some of these old-school ship manifestos and trope bingo cards!

The Case for R/S by elwing_alcyone (2003): An incredible textual analysis of PoA-OotP using direct quotes from the book to make the case for Wolfstar being canon. In addition to the character insights, read this for the snapshot of how much trust HP fans had in JKR's writing skills and in her care for her LGBTQ+ fans at that time. Oh, how she has fallen in our collective esteem...

Strange and Beautiful by blacksatinrose (2004): Another shipper's manifesto that focuses more on compatibility (and incompatibility) and potential than a close reading of the text. The author likes the ship precisely for their mismatch and the infinite number of stories that can be told depending on when and how you start their relationship.

Wolfstar circa 2005 by @theprogressofspring (2016): A bingo card based on popular tropes/elements in Wolfstar fics back in the day. (They also posted a screenshot of the earliest recorded use of the name "Wolfstar"—2001!) If you want to compare this with bingo cards covering more recent tropes, @bloodyhellharry made this one and @bookspark made this one five years ago.

Anyway, those are my personal observations about what Wolfstar looked like back in the day and how it compares to now! I'd love to hear others' thoughts on this topic, and whether I missed anything or got something wrong. Let me know what you think!

Echo x reader

warnings: none! just fluff (relaxing with eachother)

After days with missions back to back for Cid, you and the rest of the bad batch had decided to take a small break for the day, because you were all exhausted.

You had all stopped on a beatiful remote planet, similar to Naboo in terms of wildlife; there was tall grass and many trees. The view was amazing.

Tech had landed on a hill in a meadow and there was a beautiful clear lake there that the batch agreed would be nice to swim in, well… that was after Tech dashed off to it to test if the water was safe.

Though the sight was impeccable, you weren't a fan of swimming, plus it was hot outside and you didn’t feel like getting all sweaty then having to change later. So you decided to stay on the Marauder and relax there. Hunter, Omega, and Wrecker changed into their swimming gear and headed towards the lake, with Omega on Wrecker's shoulders chanting out of excitement. Tech had gotten off the ship to run experiments and research the wildlife, which made you laugh because though today was a day to relax, he still choose to do his work; maybe it relaxed him.

Echo wasn't a fan of swimming either, also he didn't want to risk damaging his cybernetics, so he just stayed on the ship too. Honestly you were thankful he stayed. You and Echo had been dating for awhile, and with all the running around being mercenaries, along with being on a ship with four other people constantly, you two never really got any alone time, and now finally you did.

You were sitting in the cockpit watching Wrecker hurl Omega across the water giggling to yourself while Hunter kept warning him to be careful; you could also see Tech in the background analyzing leaves and running tests. As you were relaxing, Echo came up behind you and placed his hand on your shoulder.

“Hi love” he said with a smile.

“Hey hun” you smiled back at him, slowly standing up to face him. You put your hands up to hook around his neck, and Echo placed his hand and scomp at your waist. You were both now holding each other as you started swaying side to side with each other.

Echo lowered his head to kiss your cheek, resting his head down on your shoulder. Maker, you loved this man with your whole heart. He was always so sweet to you, not to mention attractive. You couldn't have asked for a better man.

You both stayed this for a while, taking in each other’s warm embrace, and it was amazing; you both needed this. You loved being held like this by him and he loved it too. Echo loved you so much; you were his everything. He loves being around you and joking with you all the time. He likes to make you laugh, it's like music to his ears. And though he's been through so much, the war, his whole experience with the techno union, and being on the run from the empire, with you, he still has hope for better days, a better life. Someday he hopes to marry you, and find a nice quiet place to settle down.

“I love you, cyare...so much.” he whispered to you. You could feel his smile on your cheeks, making you smile too.

“I love you too, Echo.”

If The majority of Mauraders stans admitted that Canon and fanon Mauraders are different characters would you have liked the Mauraders Fandom? What is your opinion on the Fanon Mauraders by themselves, ( I personally think the fanon versions are unrealistic and boring)

Hmm… I’m not sure if I’d love the Marauders fandom. Though I know for sure I’d certainly dislike them A LOT less.

If they didn’t come up with fanon Marauders then I absolutely would’ve loved the Marauders (except James, nothing will ever change my mind about that filthy mongrel) and perhaps even their fandom. Fanon Sirius is what ruined canon Sirius for me, I used to love him but his stans were too much to handle. Remus… well I do love him, but I don’t interact with his fans unless they’re Remadora shippers, I usually just stick to anti side. Peter.. well he’s hated by 99.9% of the fandom anyway so yeah.🤷‍♀️

I think I’d be alright with the Marauders fandom if they just admitted that they actually are a bunch of apologists who are unable to acknowledge their faves’ flaws, and if they stop harassing Snape fans and sending us death threats.

What’s my opinion on the fanon Marauders? Aight, let’s see then:

Fanon James Potter

Apparently he’s a feminist icon, is a sex god, is Aaron Taylor Johnson, saved Lily from creepy Snivellus, protects the school from evil racists, cannot do anything wrong, was doing social service by bullying ugly greasy Snivellus.

Bo-ro-ro-ro-ring. *yawns* Next.

Fanon Sirius Black:

So this dude is an LGBTQ icon, is so0o0o0o0o hot (well he actually is), is a god amongst women, wears leather jackets all the time, is super gay for Remus Lupin, is a poor lil abused uwu angel who cries every time something happens with Remus.

Just- ew. No personality whatsoever besides being gay for Moony and being hot. Next.

Fanon Remus Lupin:

So… this—er—thing is a discount Hermione Granger, walks around with Cadbury’s chocolate factory in his back pocket, is the werewolf version of Willy Wonka, is the only reason James and Sirius pass, is super gay for Sirius Black, is a super shy, nerdy uwu werewolf who wouldn’t hurt a fly.🥺🥺😍

I’m not even kidding. I despise fanon Remus Lupin from the deepest, darkest fathoms of my soul. I will never forgive his stans for turning him into this… I don’t even know.

So, this is a bit different, there are two different fanon versions of Peter:

1st Peter Pettigrew:

So this dude is an attractive slim guy. That is all. That is his only purpose.

Just… no. It’s genuinely disgusting how shallow Marauder stans are. I feel bad for Dan Dehaan and canon Peter.

2nd Peter Pettigrew:

So he’s a complete and utter dumbass, he plays with sticks like a dog, chews on his own foot, is fat-shamed repeatedly by James and Sirius (and the entire Marauders fandom) and it’s totally acceptable because… reasons, and is completely non-existent most of the time.

No. Just no. That is all I have to say.

So yeah, I hate them all.

No offense to minors but I think a big part of Wolfstar getting labeled toxic is all the new tiktok fans who tend to be younger and more prone to labeling messy dynamics in that way. Drarry fans seem to attract an older demographic who are aware of the complicated dynamics of that ship and ship it accordingly. A lot of new Marauders fans seem to have issues with Remus and Sirius being complicated and multi-faceted to a certain degree.

I agree 10000000000000%! And it's fascinating to me that Wolfstar attracts younger fans while Drarry attracts older. Why???? Drarry are literally babies and Wolfstar are in their 30s but okay. 🤷‍♂️ I think you're absolutely right but it still baffles me.

General Relationship Headcanons || James Potter

Request: “Please can you do a general relationship for james potter? xx” -anon

Notes: This is kinda slow burn, I’m a little sorry. The ones I did for Remus and Sirius were not canon so this won’t be either which is a little easier because no Jily. These keep on getting longer and longer, but part of that is because Jamie is definitely my favorite marauder.

You were something special

James had known that since he was 4 years old

It just took him a long time to realize exactly how special you really were

James Potter was an idiot

That would become increasingly apparent to him as he grew up

Your family and the Potters were great friends for as long as any of you could remember, meaning that you and James were practically attached at the hip

And who could blame you? He has such nice hips

The both of you are heart broken when he leaves for Hogwarts leaving you behind because you wouldn’t start until the following year.

All throughout his first year you guys write back and forth sharing every single detail of your respective days, down to the color of the plate you ate your lunch on

When the next year rolls around and you get to finally join James on the Hogwarts Express you want to hate Sirius and Remus

But how can you? They’re Remus and Sirius

You guys spend the entirety of the train ride laughing and talking and the other two boys tell you embarrassing stories from the year prior about James

When they hear your nicknames for him (Jamsie, Jamie, J), they make fun of him relentlessly

He calls you an assortment of cheesy nicknames too but his favorites, before you guys get together, are “Sweetheart”, “Sunshine”, and “love”

If you get sorted into Gryffindor James screams his head off for you, making room for you to sit next to him at the table in the Great Hall, opposite Sirius and Remus.

If you’re in a different house then James gets sad, really sad, like that night he cries into his pillow and Sirius has to climb into bed with him to give him hugs and tell him that its okay even if the two of you are in different houses. That doesn’t have to affect your friendship if you don’t let it.

You don’t have classes together so it's easy to ignore him there, and if you’re in separate houses it's even easier

Now that’s a different story

You can’t just eat somewhere else and the prospect of facing James after what Sirius said has you running for the nearest toilet

It kills James that he’s only seen you on the other side of the courtyard or disappearing behind corridors

And at first he’s a little angry when you don’t sit with them at meals, but after scanning the Great Hall, he realizes you’re not there

His stomach drops, have you not been eating?

So dinner the second night he collects a plate for you with all of your favorite things and determinedly sets off for your dorm, balancing a plate in one hand and a glass of pumpkin juice in the other

He has to knock on your door with his foot

“Jamie, what’re you doing here.”

He gently pushes past you letting himself into your room to set the plate and glass on your desk

“You haven’t been eating.”

“Clone Force 99. Welcome back, ” Commander Cody extends a hand to Hunter who firmly shakes it.

“Apologies for showing up late, we-”

“Got stuck handling some unexpected complications during a mission. I understand Sergeant Hunter,” Cody winks.

“What have you got for us this time Commander?” Crosshair mumbles, twisting his toothpick around between his teeth.

“This one is going to be a bit different boys. It’s not exactly…sanctioned by the GAR. Let’s call it a favor for an old friend of mine.”

Crosshair straightens up, suspicious of Cody’s statement, “We may bend the rules from time to time, but we don’t do favors.”

“This is an efficient mission that ultimately will aid us in the war, provide you some easy target practice…and helps me relieve an old debt I have to pay.”

“Is there a reason you can’t do this yourself?” Hunter questions.

“We’ve been called into battle. Besides, this separatist encampment is one we have failed to infiltrate time and time again,” Cody responds.

Hunter shifts, struggling to comprehend where this is going, “What does attacking a separatist encampment have to do with repaying a debt?”

“There is a Senator stationed on Drahgor III…a corrupt senator at that. One who has a significant bounty on his head. My dear old friend is a bounty hunter I met on Ord Mantell. Your job will be to take out the clankers and retrieve any data you can from the main database. Meanwhile, my bounty hunter friend will secure the bounty and you’ll go your separate ways.”

“Who is this Bounty Hunter?” Crosshair inquires.

“Glad you asked,” Cody exclaims, “Y/N!”

The clone troopers twirl around to see you approaching them. Your manner is conservative yet confident. One thing you have become an expert at is never striving for attention. Instead, your presence demands it.

You nod at the troopers, “Clone Force 99, it is a pleasure to be working with you.”

Surveying the team, your eyes first fall on Crosshair. His distrusting look reaffirms the defense you raised long before wandering onto the landing platform.

Gotta keep an eye on that one.

Next, you glance over to Wrecker. A massive lug of a man, but he has the noticeable demeanor of a gentle giant. Something about him reminds you of a plush toy you once owned as a child.

Tech catches your attention next. He is clearly the intuitive one. He will either be a pain to deal with, or a beneficial asset.

At last, your eyes meet Hunter’s. Such a tiny gesture of nothingness feels like you’ve just been thrust into a timeless world of something far more significant. You quickly dismiss your gaze, but soon find your eyes wandering back to him. His eyes are already on you.

Tech quickly picks up on your silent interaction and nudges Hunter to break him of his trance. Hunter quickly snaps out of it and clears his throat. He is dumbstruck by his response. His heart beats recklessly.

Taking note of his counterpart’s vitals, Tech is left unsettled by the quickening of Hunter’s heart rate. “Hunter, I need you to focus on your breathing. Your heart rate is abnormally high.”

Setting your sight once more on the rugged clone trooper, you catch the ever-changing hue of his cheek…the one that isn’t covered in dark ink. A hint of red paints his untouched skin.

He clears his throat, “Erm-thank you for alerting me Tech. I’ll be aboard the ship.”

Cody shrugs his shoulders at you, “I guess you’ll brief them on the ship. Have a safe trip.”

“Thank you Cody, ” you clap him on the shoulder and follow the rogue crews lead onto their ship.

𝙿𝚛𝚎𝚜𝚎𝚗𝚝 𝙳𝚊𝚢

“Where are we going to go? We need somewhere we can set up camp that isn’t easily tracked, ” Echo declares.

“There is one place I can think of, but I’m not sure that Hunter will be a fan of the location, ” Tech announces apprehensively.

Hunter lets out a groan and tightens his fist.

Wrecker laughs, “Hunter doesn’t like this idea! Which means I like it even more!”

Glaring at Wrecker, Hunter abruptly stands and stomps off into the cockpit.

“Where is it?” Echo inquires. He leans in, intrigued by the atmosphere that has suddenly befallen the Marauder.

“Let’s just say…we’d have to get help from an old friend.”

“Ha! An old friend!?” Wrecker blurts out, “Try an old fla-”

“That’s enough, ” Hunter commands, having regained his composure, “We will attempt to make contact this evening and if we have no response by the morning, we will seek out other options.”

All night Hunter stayed up, much to the dismay of his crewmates, awaiting an incoming communication. His mind told him that it would never come through; his heart made him believe…or at least hope otherwise.

He stretches his arms into the air, releasing a hardy yawn. Tech enters the cockpit, “Anything?”

“Nothing, ” Hunter responds with a hint of despair clouding his words.

Just then, a muffled echo transmits through the comms unit. Hunter nearly falls out of the captain’s chair as he scrambles to the commlink.

“This is Phoenix 178095 trying to contact Clone Force 99. I repeat, this is Phoenix 1780-“

“Copy Phoenix 178095, this is Clone Force 99,” Hunter announces almost frantically.

The only response is silence…until, “Hunter? Hunter, is that you?”

The rugged clones grasp on the comlink tightens, and he touches it to his forehead. His eyes are locked shut, his breath unsteady.

“Yes. It’s me.”

You hear his guttural voice and suddenly, your memories which you’ve strived to suppress come flooding back, knocking the wind out of you.

Attempting to swallow the lump that insists on crowding your throat, you press down the transmitter button, but fail to express your thoughts.

“What?” A menacing voice echoes out, “Lothcat got your tongue?”

You chuckle, pressing the comlink to your forehead, “well if it isn’t my favorite piston head.” Piston head, a nickname you have used to refer to Crosshair for as long as you can remember. You find it fitting because term is in reference to a droid, similar to the droid-like manner in which Crosshair carries himself.

“So!” Shouts a third, brooding and somewhat childish voice, “Are we bunking with you or what?”

“Yes Wrecker, you are more than welcome to stay here.”

“Thank you, ” Hunter softly says into the comm’s mic. His voice still brings warmth to your soul, although the communicator slightly alters it.

“Get here safely.”

“Always do.”

“I know, ” you affirm and disconnect the commlink.

Looking around at the empty room, which mere seconds ago was filled with the sound of your closest friends’ voices, you feel once again plagued by loneliness.

It has been nearly three years since you last spoke to them. Choosing to once again shove your feelings down deep inside you, rather than let the pain consume you, you prepare for their arrival.

“Maybe one day we will meet again, when all of this is over. Perhaps then we will have the freedom to say all that we have long held in, ” you exhaust yourself in the effort to fight back the words that are bottled up inside of you.

A void and emotionless, expression spans across his face as he finally acknowledges the weight of the moment. A single tear threatens to spill over, and he clenches his fist to fight back the giant hole that is forming in his heart.

“Y/N, ” he utters, “I-”

“Hunter! It’s time for us to go, ” Tech calls out.

Your entire body jerks to a standstill when you hear the hum of their ship landing.

Hunter feels a sudden sickening sensation throughout his body.

“Deep breaths, brother. You don’t want your little reunion to be overruled by sweaty palms and rosy cheeks, ” Crosshair teases.

Hunter groans, “We are here for a short period of time until we can safely get back to Kamino. Until then, this is strictly business as usual.”

“Whatever you say Hunter,” he flicks his toothpick into the garbage receptacle with perfect aim.

The leader of the clone force, known for being courageous, daring, and valiant has abruptly shifted to a timid and uncertain man. But that’s just it. He felt like a man. A feeling only familiar when around you. Every other day of the rotation, he is merely a defective clone—a misfit who despite his enhanced abilities, is thrown into combat, aware of the fact that he is completely dispensable. Because he is merely one of hundreds of thousands of others just like him, he feels like he is just another carbon copy dispersed off of a factory line. Yet, around you, he never felt that way.

He watches out the cockpit window and sees you emerge from your homestead. His heart somersaults.

“Shall we disembark Hunter?” Tech asks.

He nods.

You are so lost in your thoughts that you hardly notice the troopers exiting their ship. It isn’t until Wrecker has scooped you up into his arms that you are jostled back to reality.

“Wreck!” You cry out in excitement as you wrap your arms around him.

Crosshair lends you a wink that you flirtatiously mirror. It’s always fun seeing him fight back a cheeky grin.

Tech is clearly holding back, so you eagerly close the distance between you two and envelope him in your arms. Initially, he hesitates but rapidly works up the bravery to reciprocate.

Chuckling at his hold on you, you tease, “I don’t know who gives the stronger hugs! You, or Wrecker.” He quickly releases you and straightens his glasses.

“Who’s this?” You motion towards the pale, almost sickly-looking clone. In fact, he looks more like a machine than a clone.

“I’m Echo, ” he extends his hand to you. Accepting it, you introduce yourself in return.

Hunter appears from behind the group. Suddenly, you lose the ability to think straight, let alone speak. His eyes meet yours and you share a somber smile. Each taking a step toward each other, you close the distance between you. Unable to resist any longer, you throw your arms around him, drawing him tightly to you.

For a moment, he stands frozen. Hunter has imagined the feeling of taking you into his arms again more than he would like to admit. At last, he pushes his thoughts aside and encircles your waist with his strong embrace.

You can feel his heartbeat slowly accelerate; at least your heart isn’t the only one threatening to beat out of your chest. You seemingly melt into each other. His hands softly tracing circles on your lower back.

Knowing that this moment cannot last as long as you’d both like, you hesitantly pull away from him. His hands grip at your hips as if he is begging you to not stray from his grasp. Your heart yearns to pull him back into your embrace and to stay there with him forever.

Becoming aware of the world around you once again, you feel your face flush into a crimson red.

“Why are they just standing there like that?” Wrecker leans down to whisper to Tech.

“Sometimes, the most important messages do not need to be said with words,” he responds softly.

tbh Snape would get much less hate if he was just... attractive. People really stuck at a 5 years old's level of 'good people are pretty' morality and dont know what to do when a complex character is ugly. Likewise you know if peter had been hot marauders fans would be all over him, but nope he's fat so they see him as unattractive. But stan tom riddle, and make out draco and regulas to be the multi dimensional, slytherin heroes that Snape actually was.

I wish media hadn't encouraged the "bullies are the kids who look and act different" stereotype because so often it is the victim, who gets targeted specifically because they're so "weird".

A character's horrible actions are often excused if they're male/ white/ charming/ rich/ conventionally attractive. And guess what, Snape is just one of those (and not even masculine). He's written as having Jewish features, he's a "filthy halfblood", absolutely poor, he's mean and withdrawn and no one seems to consider him attractive

James Potter on the other hand, is that trust fund jock who everyone would love to date and mostly, (even in marauder fans' hcs), he doesn't have much of a personality beyond it. And everyone still finds him compelling. Ma'am that's his bank account you're so interested in, not him.

Harry Potter ships I truly hate

Disclaimer: I’m not telling you who to ship and whatnot, I’m just expressing how awful these ships are to me and then explaining why.

1. Harry X Draco

Now this is coming from a former drarry stan who before, hadn’t read the books. I thought Draco ‘had no choice’ and ‘just wanted love’ until I opened my eyes and saw the character for who he really was. That is a spoiled blood supremacist who hates muggleborns, and is loved by both of his parents. Draco bullied Harry. Although Harry fought back, it was because he was the victim and had to defend himself. Harry never went out of his way to hurt Draco, but Draco did it constantly. Draco and Harry would never work because Harry hated Draco just as much as Draco did him. You could ship Harry with so many others that wouldn’t be toxic such as, Ginny, Cho, maybe Hermoine (but I prefer Romoine), maybe even Ron if you want to. (I don’t ship Harry and Cedric because the ages are too weird). It’s so obvious throughout the entire book that Harry didn’t have romantic feelings for Draco, he only ever thought he was doing bad things, seeing as he was a bad person. Harry found love in Ginny in like the fifth book? Which is when the crush started, and no one else was in the picture for him once he began dating Ginny. In conclusion, Ginny is the one he married and had children with, not Draco, because he hated him and wanted nothing to do with him as he was nothing but a bully who hated muggles and muggleborns. Seeing as Harry is a half blood, and his mother was muggleborn, why do you think Harry would turn around and be like “oh he’s just broken I’ll fix him.” And ignore everything Draco ever said about his family???? That’s such a toxic thing to think... because believe it or not, in a relationship you’re supposed to be with someone you like as a person. Just because you may find Draco attractive, that doesn’t make him a good person!! Harry would never choose Draco over anyone for that matter. If it were between Ginny or Draco to be saved, you better bet on Harry saving Ginny.

2. Hermoine X Draco

I genuinely hate this ship with my entire being. It disgusts me. This isn’t an enemies to lovers, this is literally bully X victim. Hermoine didn’t fight back, meaning Draco was the full oppressor and she was the oppressed. Draco is a blood supremacist who called Hermoine a mudblood constantly and hated her, and the feeling was mutual from Hermoine because why would anyone like their bully? Falling in love with your bully is a book trope, that doesn’t happen in real life. When Hermoine was being tortured in Malfoy Manor, Draco stood and watched because he didn’t care, meanwhile Ron, the boy Hermoine was attracted to and loved, was screaming and crying begging for him to take her place so she would be protected. That’s true love, something Hermoine and Draco will never have. I really will never understand why so many people love shipping victims with their oppressors... like do you get a sick kick out of it by babying the oppressor? Saying things like “oh he’s just unloved” or “he can change!” When none of that is true. Draco chose to be who he is, which is a blood supremacist and was loved by his family, and Hermoine chose not to ever engage with him because of his personality and attitude. Draco hated her, and everyone else like her because of their status, and overall, Hermoine just isn’t attracted to him. Hermoine is attracted to Ron and he’s the only person I can see dating Hermoine because everyone else would be a bit strange. Dramoine is unbelievably toxic, and all it does is romanticise abuse. “Oh Draco only bullied her for 7 years because he was afraid to love her.” Stfu. You’d never hurt someone you love. Draco bullied her because he thought he was ABOVE her, and she was nothing but dirt on his shoe.

3. Hermoine X Pansy

When it comes to fanon, I still don’t understand why it gets shipped because in order to do that, you have to change Pany’s entire personality to the point where it’s not even Pansy anymore. It’s just some nice girl with the same name. Because the real Pansy bullied Hermoine and made it known how much she didn’t like her. Not only that, but Pansy was head over heels for Draco. This isn’t an enemies to lovers, this is shipping the bully with the victim for some weird reason... because Hermoine didn’t fight back just like Hermoine X Draco. If they were both at each other’s throats I could see your enemies to lovers, but that’s just not what this is. If you ship them because you’re looking for a wlw ship, why not take a look at Ginny X Luna, Lavender X Parvati, or even Tonks X Fleur, rather than picking the toxic ship that would never ever work and would only hurt Hermoine. Ron Weasley exists for a reason. Again, shipping someone with their oppressor is a very weird thing to do. For example, Ron is a pureblood, but Ron wasn’t prejudice towards muggles or muggleborns, because he’s a decent and normal person. Pansy and Draco aren’t decent people, and they bullied people. Really there isn’t much else to say as all canon stuff about Pansy is about her bullying people, and encouraging people to capture Harry because SHE’S A BLOOD SUPREMACIST THAT’S ALL SHE IS. Hermoine is a strong and independent woman and would NEVER date someone prejudice like that, she has standards.

4. Lily X Snape

We have to stop with this “she can fix him” mentality, because women don’t exist to fix men. Either Snape was a good person, or a bad person. He should be able to choose that himself. Which he was actually, and he was very clearly a bad person. You can’t force someone to be attracted to another. Attraction forms on its own, and it’s something Lily never had for Snape, they were only friends. To say that Lily owed Snape something because he liked her... is so wrong and disgusting. If she doesn’t like him, she doesn’t like him and Snape should fucking move on instead of obsessing over her. But, Snape overall was a creep so you can’t say “oh he made a mistake” when that man knew EXACTLY what he was doing. Ripping Lily’s happy photograph of her with her husband and baby, and taking the letter she wrote for Sirius who Snape could pretend she did that for him. Literally disgusting. Even the friendship was toxic. When reading I realised that Snape played the victims card a lot when talking about the marauders as if he wasn’t doing WORSE thing to them. Lily knew that Snape wanted to join Voldemort, as seen in the books. ‘You and your previous little death eater friends — you see, you don’t even deny it. You don’t even deny that’s what you’re aiming to be! You can’t wait to join you-know-who, can you?” Then she says “I can’t pretend anymore, you’ve chosen your way, and I’ve chosen mine.” Lily PRETENDED that Snape wasn’t going to be a death eater because she didn’t want to believe that her own friend would hate her kind so much. Though once reality hit her she was gone and was never coming back. To ship someone who was oppressed with the oppressor is so weird and wrong, and I genuinely think you’re strange if you do that 😐. Snape already didn’t like Lily having other friends... so what does that tell you about what kind of relationship they would have? A manipulative one and an emotionally abusive one. James Potter was a pureblood, and not once did he ever bully someone for their blood status. He did things to Snape because Snape was a prejudice piece of shit and deserved it quite frankly. I would have done the exact same thing. Remember, the Potter’s were ‘blood traitors’ and Snape was a blood supremacist, of course the two aren’t going to like one another. But the difference is, Snape bullied innocent people (laughing at the fact Mary MacDonald was subdued to dark magic) and James fought back for those without voices. Getting revenge for people who couldn’t do it themselves. That’s the difference between a bully and a hero tbh. There’s no way Lily would ever date a death eater, she’s a strong woman who can make up her mind for herself rather than having people on the internet say things like “she was brainwashed!” And things like that. She became attracted and fell in love with a respectful man who would never cause her any type of emotional or physical harm.

In conclusion, I will judge you if you think shipping abusers/oppressors with their victims is ok in any way.

Just know that my opinion on these ships will never change because they’re all extremely toxic whether you like it or not. That’s just common sense. It’s canon that Draco, Pansy, and Snape were horrible people who liked to make fun of others. Fanon doesn’t mean a single thing in this because fanon isn’t real. If you have to change the entire personality of someone so they aren’t abusive... what does that tell you about their character? A lot of people do this because they like how a character looks, which is so tone deaf. If you think a victim should date their oppressor because of looks... I’m judging you heavily. If a character is wrote to be abusive, I don’t understand people do fan art of them with the people they hurt in a romantic way.

You might say I’m being over dramatic, but really it’s not that hard to understand that you shouldn’t romanticise abuse or say that oppressor X victim would make the perfect couple just because of their looks.

Would you ever ship Neville with Draco? No you wouldn’t. And it’s not for the reasons you would think. I bet if Neville was conveniently attractive (in the books, I love Matthew.) people would have shipped him with Draco despite Draco mercilessly bullying Neville for 7 years. A lot of people would have made excuses like “Draco was broken!” In order to be able to ship two attractive men together. (Which also plays into fetishisation of lgbt+ couples I think...) This fandom is rather toxic when it comes to this, and they’d rather ship a very abusive relationship with two conventionally attractive people rather than a loving one with two people that aren’t.
