I haven’t seen anyone else talk about this and I think it’s the funniest thing ever because how the hell do you use UVC lights, meant for medical sterilization, as party lights 😭

The dissonance between era inspiration in ACoTaR is one of the more brushed over flaws in the book series. Looking at the Inner Circle's fashion alone, we jump between "literal scraps of fabric" (Under the Mountain, Court of Nightmares) to "orientalist painter's imaginings of the Ottoman Harem" (clothing described during Feyre's first few visits to the Night Court) to "modern 'corset' dress" (Feyre's Starfall dress, majority of Mor's clothing, most of the clothes drawn in fan art) to "modern -- almost sci-fi style -- skin-tight leather armor" to "sweater and leggings combo".
Then, between courts, we have Helion wearing Spirit Halloween's take on the ancient Grecian tunic; Feyre's Spring Court wedding dress looking like an 1830s fashion plate; and Dawn heavily implied to have traditional East Asain clothing (e.g. kimono, hanfu, hanbok).
On top of all of that, some of the Dawn Court's small cities ". . . specialized in tinkering and clockwork and clever things. . ." which -- combined with Lucien's metal eye and Nuan's mechanical hand -- implies a sort of post-industrial revolution time period. However, a decent chunk of the fandom says that ACoTaR is medieval; which, yeah, it's medieval themed in the first book -- sans the "dress" Rhysand forces Feyre to wear UTM.
The wild inconsistencies in ACoTaR's inspiration leads, not to a rich and diverse world, but a world that seems ramshackle and haphazard -- like it's creator simply threw together a board on Pinterest and called it a day. This is a major part of why the world building is so abysmal, it relies on convenience to the plot and whatever pleases the aesthetic whims of the author. Cultures deemed "pretty" or "badass" are thrown together, irregardless of how far apart they actually are. This is not only disrespectful to the narrative, but to the readers and the cultures used as inspiration.
All of this to say: Sarah J Maas is a bad author, not just because of the way she handles serious topics like power dynamics and abuse, but also because she cannot put together a world that is even the slightest bit cohesive.

okayyyy ive been meaning to talk about this moment forever because i think the way i see it differs from a lot of general fandom opinion.
for context, this is from the dhc section of the dead apple manga. skk are talking about an executive who just died and dazai makes a joke about it, prompting chuuya to deck him in the face and say nobody could believe dazais human. (believe, very importantly. not that he Isnt, just that its unbelievable).
humanity is a key theme to all of bsd, but its Very explicitly central to the skk dynamic. chuuya is an intensely human character in the way that he acts and thinks, and yet! between his ability and ofc the history in the lab, it still gets called into question.
(its pretty solid that our chuuyas the real one, but thats not the point here. sb being an exploration of what it means to be human and whether Actually Being One is all that important to what you are and do, through a Distinctly human character- Thats the point. How you are being more important than what you are.)
then we have dazai on the other hand, where what he is doesnt come into question at all. Even his ability, despite its name, isnt dehumanising to an outside eye, compared to chuuyas corruption or atsushis tiger for example that can take away from their control of themselves. its the how he is, in contrast to chuuya, that comes into question with dazai. he very consistently holds himself outside of humanity both implicitly (through self isolation - shipping container being an extreme example) and explicitly (dead apple dazai talking about humanity as an Outside Observer. he is Not including himself as one of them).
When we are encouraged to doubt his humanity, its dazai Telling us to. he deliberately poses himself as inhuman because he FEELS it. and the dhc moment to me has always felt like chuuya seeing through it and calling his bullshit. Dazais making light of a death to be a dick, to push chuuyas buttons, but also because hes got this constant need to present the worst possible version of himself.
actually if you look at the panels of him when hes talking about the guy being dead, just before he gets dramatic ridiculous exaggerated dazai about it, he doesnt seem to think of it so lightly
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(smthn smthn dazai imposter syndrome. the need to deny any of his more human qualities because he feels they dont Fit him. and the links w his questions to atsushi at the beginning and end, his bs 'do i really seem like the type of guy to do x thing'.)
chuuya says hes acting inhuman, that his humanity isnt something people will believe because of the way he ACTS. and then chuuya does an example of his own Chuuya Humanity Act, an act of service for the people he cares about in the form of going to solve the situation himself. AND. ultimately, dazai ends up planning around this later to lead chuuya straight to him so the two of them can deal with it together.
skk pretty consistently ground eo to humanity. dazai through nullification/corruption, but outside of their abilities too (its the thought of dazai - more specifically, not thinking like him - that stops chuuya from killing N in stormbringer and denying verlaines assertion that he shouldnt have been born). and on the flipside, chuuya is part of the reason dazai doesnt khs during or after fifteen. dazais protecting people thing really starts out with chuuya. and again, chuuya makes it his business to call dazai on his shit. (even right the way back in chapter 31 of the main manga, we have that interaction over Q, with dazai saying he spared them only for self serving logical reasons, and chuuya saying he doesnt buy it).
this to me has always felt like part of that. its not 'youre not human', its 'the way you act makes it unbelievable that you are'. its an invitation to prove he is by doing something Real, something worth more than sleeping there til he dies.
and dazai does.

ik its all jokes but ngl i hate when people are like “woaaaaaah have u guys seen how much furries pay for art….brb i gotta go learn how to draw furries 🤑” ik for outsiders it can be shocking how much some furry art goes for but like. the undertone of the joke is just “these freaks pay so much money for stupid art” and they joke abt just suddenly deciding to do it. as if its super easy and takes no skill or effort. like its easy money. “these losers will buy anything 😂” type energy. and the idea of ppl who have zero respect or interest in the community just basically seeing cash cows rlly pisses me off bc like. to me furries are one of the few communities that actually values artwork as the luxury it is and will pay accordingly, and a lot of furries that are well-off put their money into the livelihoods of artists in their communities and thats not stupid just bc the artists are drawing animal people

Poppy for N2 au, it took me so long to make her design cuz I didn't really know what I wanted to do only because I feel like her design is pretty perfect.
But then I just thought about fun outfits to give her or outfits that I would find comfortable if I was wearing them and it all came together.
Poppy here is pretty much the same as here movie counterpart, as nothing really changes on her end of things other than having more insight on Branch through his brothers, and through Lief. Shes also a bit more understanding a bit earlier on because of it but it doesnt do much to change her own character arc I would say.
Bonus
Part of Poppys design was based off a design I had made for previous rulers of Troll Village/Tree
Namely Queen Protea who I designed as Poppys grandmother
Tumblr media
Named after the Protea flower which part of her design is based off :D
In the context of this Au Protea was the one who conceptualized the tunnels while her son, King Peppy, was the one to follow through after her death

Szarekh should taunt Roboute with his sangunius death mask and possible memories of him. Kick him while he's mentally down, reminding him of his dead brother he liked.
Please, that is far too simple (and paints Szarekh as a one-dimensional villain, which I do not think is the direction GW should go even if they probably will). No, no, we can make this set up so much worse.
Szarekh appears in his death mask of Sanguinius, claiming to have known him. He shares memories of him. He may not speak directly, but he shares his experiences with Sanguinius the best way he can.
And Guilliman is furious. How dare this alien bastard tell such an obvious lie? How dare he blaspheme, disrespect the memory of someone Guilliman loved and respected? His brother! Because it can't be true. Sanguinius would never have had a relationship with this soulless monstrosity. It goes against everything their father wanted and created them to do. Yes, Guilliman hates what the Imperium has become, but he is still fundamentally of it. He was made to purge anything not human (and a very specific kind of human at that.) He has worked with aeldar, wure, but this is different. This is too much. He's never going to trust a word the Silent King says (or implies given the whole "silent" thing.)
So Guilliman throws his forces into the meat grinder. The wall of a technologically superior force. He fights this wad, and maybe his anger and grief makes him just a little less stable. A tiny bit less measured. The slightest, slightest bit more aggressive.
And people die. Lots of people die, but they are perfectly happy to because that is what their god and his living son ask of them. They are avenging the name of their Angel, that the filthy xenos dared to disrespect.
But...what if Szarekh is, in fact, completely genuine when he says he knew Sanguinius? That they met, were willing to work together, were...friendly? Friends? More than friends? And Guilliman, far into the campaign, finds irrefutable proof that this is true? Sanguinius wanted this alliance. Szarekh wanted it too, and was willing to have it with Guilliman too. There was a peaceful way forward for the two leaders, if Guilliman had only listened? He could have made the universe just a tiny bit safer for humanity, just a tiny bit brighter.
And he failed. He chose his father's hatred and his own distrust. He was wrong.
What then? Does he accept that he made a mistake? A mistake that proves Sanguinius was willing to commit the worst heresies? Does he still see his brother the same way after that? Does he try to correct his grievous error and honor Sanguinius, despite all it would cost him? If it is even possible? Can Guilliman shift his worldview that much that quickly?
Or does he deny it? Does he choose the comfortable lie, that Szarekh is the enemy and is just using Sanguinius' face to insult him? Does he surrender a little bit more to the dogma consuming his father's empire? Everyone around Guilliman will tell him this is the correct choice. He'll be praised, lauded. Worshipped for his strength of will. And maybe it's a necessary sacrifice, in his mind. The Imperium would tear itself apart if he tried to ally with a xenos. He has to keep the machine going. Doesn't he? Nobody will ever know...
What's the Avenging Son to do?

It was another version of him that kinda shocked me. It was cute, though. He’s normally quiet, but, on that day, he was like… He was saying something about the stars being cute. I was like, “What? Is this really happening?” I was a bit surprised. I was rambling and babbling. I didn’t know what made me say that. It was probably my true feeling.

when toshiro got on laios ass for being inconsiderate and never thinking about how his actions affect others like he was mean abt it but hes not wrong. Thats a pretty major character flaw and a pattern of behavior for laios — w not choosing jobs that made money for namari who is in a pretty dire financial situation where she cant even get off the island and has to go adventuring in the dungeon to get out of debt, who even explicitly brought this up, eating marcilles familiar immediately even tho she was attached to it, kidnapping shuro into his party and putting him in life threatening situations without like really checking he wanted to be there…?, wanting to see if izutsumi has more than one set of nipples when dehumanization is a HUGE huge issue for her the list goes on and on and on. Like when a friend does this to you its just kinda annoying but when ur the leader u really should be checking if everyones needs r met without them telling u. Like the autism plays a factor for sure, his cultural upbringing plays a factor for sure, but as ppl regardless I think u gotta step up to meet the needs of ppl in the moment or realize u shouldnt be calling the shots. just bc its influenced by factors out of ur control does not make it not a serious character flaw. And its written as such in the story.

I'm so tired today. Take the Ringleaders of the group.
So I mentioned that I was a little nervous about talking about the plot and it still stands but uh. Basically, the friends all live in reality. And their "reality" is like our reality (obviously with exceptions that I make to the current time line) but some people can create portals. The portals lead to other dimensions. Some are alternate dimensions similar to reality. Some are dimensions to peaceful lands. Some are dimensions to magical lands.
This dimension maker can lead his friends to an alternate dimension in hostile lands with violent monsters but. The thing is. When they die in the other dimension, they just get booted back to their reality. So the Ringleader (Real) recruits his friend group to go die for fun, like a very mentally stable young adult would do.
Also, this is not the same in every dimension. It's simply the same dimension destination every time, so Ringleader (Real) isn't about to generate a portal to some Other Dimension where death could be permanent. He's content just traveling to the one violent dimension.
