Ok hi hi hello, film student anon back here to talk about one of my biggest gripes with genloss that I didn't know about until afterwards: the budget

So, to start off with, filmmaking is expensive. Even on student film sets a lot of them are usually at least a few hundred dollars (keep in mind we're college students). Personally, with the money that I have, the most I spend is on food for feeding my crew, but people with more money than me will spend a bit on props costumes etc

Now Ranboo has the fortune of a massive budget and quite frankly I'm so disappointed by where I've seen where the money's gone too.

The fact that the most expensive thing was a *box* is so painful. How the hell was that thing 18k. And the fact that he might not even use it again makes it worse. If he hired a decent art director they should've been able to make that thing so cheaply with materials from a craft store and the mechanism to close it might've cost a few thousand but no where near 18k

That 18k could've gone too better costumes, or better lighting, or a better camera in the second stream. 18k is a lot of money that could've been more evenly spread out throughout the rest of the production and given ranboo a much cleaner final product

Not to mention the prosthetics for jerma also being up there in price when they weren't even blended properly

Also the mall they got. The mall was *massive* and then they proceeded to barely use it and when they did use it, they barely bothered to dress it up. It didn't look like an abandoned mall that had been taken over by some corporation, it looked like an abandoned mall with some lazy set dec on it. They easily could've used a much smaller mall or a warehouse honestly might've worked better.

I can understand the need to have all of these different sets and why a smaller location might hinder that, but there's a lot of work arounds for taking down and reusing a set and still making it obvious it was all a set. Like putting all the furniture and props into a storage room and having ranboo open it and see the previous sets sitting there dismantled, or maybe having sets look similar and reusing furniture that's been dressed up differently and then Ranboo finding the paint they used to make it look different and letting the audience put things together

Thats actually a concept that my school drills into us. It's called creative geography and it's basically making things look bigger than they are or like they're different completely locations even if they're literally the same room by dressing them differently and getting creative with different camera angles etc etc

There's a lot of ways to have less space and still give the same illusion but the team ranboo hired and ranboo himself didn't do anything like it, they just went for big and expensive and it didn't work

In the final stream where it was revealed that it was all some TV show or something, after the initial set where ranboo spawns in, there was one hint of that throughout the rest of the mall that it was a "set" and it was there was a c-stand and a light that I honestly thought at first was a mistake and wasn't supposed to be there but then realized what it was trying to do

The mall probably cost so much and it was so poorly used honestly an abandoned office building or a warehouse would've done better. They probably could've even reneged a proper studio space for a few weeks. And honestly having a smaller space would've stopped the need for the cameraman to be on screen as much as they did cause that honestly really ruined the immersion

This isn't even digging into the money spent on those ridiculous pipe puzzle animations.

Sometimes I feel a little bad for digging into genloss as much as I do, but with how much Ranboo hyped it up and with how many very amateur mistakes there were it's justified. And I have some genuine hope for future installments because it honestly seems like ranboo has some really creative ideas and cool plans, it's just that so far his execution has been very poor so far

Especially, it’s almost certain that (Name) sees Osomatsu more as a best friend and Karamatsu is their crush, just due to the fact that Karamatsu oozes charm in every interaction with them while Osomatsu is much more laidback. Karamatsu acts like a potential romantic partner, while Osomatsu acts more like a potential friend. Even though the perfect rule would be that a romantic partner should be a friend first, Osomatsu still thinks that since their mind jumped right to Karamatsu as a crush first, there’s more there for the two of them than there would be for Osomatsu and (Name). He can see how they look at Karamatsu versus how they look at him. It’s… only proper for him to let Karamatsu have the first shot, isn’t it?

It’s hell for him to push (Name) into confessing to Karamatsu. It’s pure hell. He cares for them so much and would want nothing more than to tell them just how much he wants to be able to hold them and kiss them and take them out on dates and all that sappy romantic shit. But… not only do they like Karamatsu, he feels guilty even for that. What kind of big brother would play ‘steal-yo-babe’ with someone his little brother likes?? He’s already the shitty eldest, and that would make him extra shitty because he knows both of them have feelings for each other. He’s not gonna be a dick and step on his baby brother’s toes like that. So he nudges at (Name), in little bits, telling them how he’s heard Karamatsu writing a song for them or talking all lovesick to him about them. “He likes you, and I’m pretty sure you like him, so why don’t you just go for it, y’know?”

For him, it really sucks. It hurts so bad, like a weight on his chest, and he could just kick himself for not telling (Name) about his own feelings. Even though he knows he has the right to be happy too, he doesn’t think it should come at Karamatsu’s expense. Karamatsu gets enough shit already, he deserves a fucking win for once. So Osomatsu suffers in silence, not saying a damn word to anyone. Not even any of his other brothers, not his parents, probably not even Totoko who he feels like he can talk to about anything. He just feels like bitching about it makes him selfish because he shouldn’t act like this is all about him.

Of course, Karamatsu tries to act like he doesn’t really know what’s going on. He’s horrible at communication sometimes, so it might seem like he’s oblivious, but… he sort of understands what his big brother is doing for him. He’s grateful for it, because it’s not often he gets the first shot at someone that more than one of them has a crush on. He’s forever the underdog, and having someone throw him a fucking bone for once means a lot to him. Particularly because it’s his older brother trying to give him a chance with (Name). It’s something he really, truly appreciates.

All things being equal, Karamatsu does his best to make the most of the chance Osomatsu is giving him. He’s the ideal gentlemen for this person, opening doors and kissing their hand and showering them with romantic gestures at every opportunity. If Osomatsu is around, he may try to tone it down a bit; though, that’s hard for someone like Karamatsu to do. He just doesn’t want it to seem like he’s rubbing it in Osomatsu’s face now that he’s seizing the opportunity. It’s… also difficult when (Name) initiates things, because if they lean in for a kiss, it’s not like he can just not go with his feelings. He melts into them quite a bit, even when he doesn’t mean to go so far.

Osomatsu doesn’t even change his behavior around (Name), despite the fact that he’s drowning in his own regret. He has to keep being their dutiful friend, to be there for them no matter what. Because when all is said and done, regardless of his romantic feelings for them, he loves being their friend too much to mess that up. If that’s all he can be… well. That’s just gonna have to be enough, isn’t it? He’ll just have to make it enough.

May I ask why you dislike LO? I enjoy reading the series, and there are faults in the writing (as no series is perfect) and I have my own gripes with it, but overall I just really like the myth of Hades and Persephone.

I'll admit there were things that made me uncomfortable when I first started reading it (and they still kinda do) like Persephone being a teenager while Hades is, what - 40-60ish? The timeline (of the story taking place over the course of only a few weeks, when a Lot of stuff is going on), Hera the goddess of marriage having an affair, Demeter being an overbearing mother who financially takes advantage of her daughter, some of the flashbacks (like specifically the one where a much younger Kore meets a drunken Hades and falls on top of him while naked? And its played off as a meet cute)

But thats besides the point - I'm curious as to why you don't like LO and/or the creator of it I guess?

Also your posts are showing up in the lore Olympus tag - (and I know there's probably a seperate "anti-lo" tag but I also wouldn't be surprised if angry anons came into your inbox for spamming the tag of the webcomic they like with criticism, because apparently thats what people do on this hellsite instead of just blocking). And, of course your entitled to critique the series, but I'm sure some people are not going to be happy about that. (I say this as a person who enjoys critiquing media, like netflix's spop reboot, and have had angry anons come at me before, so stay safe out there).

I'll take this time to get into why I don't like each character as it's one of the reasons I don't like LO as a whole:

(Some I removed because there isn't much to say about them)

Main Characters:

• Hades - Man in his Late 30s to Early 40s actively pursuing a 'teenaged girl'.... He acknowledged that this was wrong at yet pursues her anyway? Plus, he's perfectly fine with slave labor and using his power/status to get his way. His character is also inconsistent when it comes to Minthe because one minute he can stand up for himself and the next he's terrified?

• Persephone - An overly sexualized teen who acts like a child. She also killed people but it was because of a 'feeling'. She still committed murder and yet it's framed as a "well, it's not her fault" but I'm also supposed to believe this 19-20 yr old would make a great and feared queen.

• Hera - Not only does she treat the lower class like garbage but she's also a hypocrite (the affair). Plus, she just randomly goes back on her word about Hades being a creep for no reason.

• Eros - Put a girl in some random dude's car and gave her "apology donuts" as a sorry gift 😒

Antagonists:

• Minthe - She was coded with bpd which wouldn't be a bad thing if she wasn't so demonized by the story.

• Apollo - How come this dude is one of the most prevalent people in the story and we don't get a strong motive for him until season 2? Even then, we barely know anything else about him. I get the whole "well, he did this so I don't want a backstory for him" but at least give him a solid motive. One that comes from him directly.

• Thetis - One of the sweetest people gets turned into a homewrecker for no reason. Even then, people gloss over her being verbally manipulative to Minthe.

• Leto - Also verbally manipulative to her daughter. How comes RS decided to demonize the goddess of motherhood, too? There's really no justifiable reason for that.

Others: 

• Hecate  - Also switched up about Hades and Persephone. Let's not forget her hitting Hades 3 times and him having to tell her to stop.

• Artemis - I get letting her brother in the house but Eros and Hermes? That's just inconsistency right there.

• Demeter - Got demonized for the 5973th time 😔🤚

• Aphrodite - Also rude to the lower class but it makes more sense as she's Aphrodite. Still rude af though.

• Hermes - Man got mad at Thanatos for "messing with his money" as if he didn't cover the whole thing up with Demeter      

• Hestia + Athena - Just hypocrites and the fact that they're supposed to be (aro)ace goddesses.

• Ares - He and Persephone also made out when she was 18 and I assume he was way, way older. Plus, him simping for Persephone in front of Aphrodite was an odd move.

• Hephaestus - This issue has more to do with RS's writing because how the hell did he hack Apollo's phone from Persephone's sim card alone and why is that just never explained?

• Daphne - Excusing nepotism as if Thanatos doesn't work in the same place as Persephone

Now, onto the story:

Its pacing is slow but also extremely fast for what it is. Everything (excluding flashbacks) has taken place over the course of 2-3 weeks. Persephone literally gets SA'd the day after the party. But then you have to think about how Persephone and Hades are probably going to get married like a month after their second meeting. We haven't even gotten to the trial yet and it feels like we never will with how slow everything is. LO honestly isn't made to be like a regular webtoon, it's made to be binged like a Netflix show or something. That would be fine but I can tell from interviews that it wasn't RS's intentions.

Also, RS herself? Yeah, don't really vibe with what she says a good portion of the time

I'll show some examples:

Besides the wonky art, she does have potential but LO doesn't really show her skill. Hopefully, she does learn from this comic though.

About the hate, I honestly don't care that much anymore as it really doesn't change much. I respond but only because I find it funny/entertaining when someone tries to tells me what to do with my own freetime.

If you mean like, are there people who treat his character similar to Khalisah, I’m not sure because I don’t follow many people and I never interact with general fandom, but I can say that game wise the way bioware portrayed him as a leader showed that he was essentially responsible for what happened to his colony, and given what happens to them and the way they almost act as “mindless followers” to him, it does lend itself to disliking him if only on the basis that he is a) incapable of being a leader, b) weak and c) cowardly. In addition he kills himself in the end so it’s kind of another body to the pile (since all the non japanese asians trend towards a negative outcome in the end).

To elaborate on why that portrayal can be negative to me personally, Fai Dan being spineless and incapable of leadership is in my eyes tied to a complex racial/gender based intersection of how Asian men are viewed as inferior and weak due to a western ideal of masculinity— but that’s my take on why i think his portrayal (in conjunction with the rest of the portrayals having similar negative qualities) has a little racial bias.

But aside from his individual character, the Yellow Peril trope (which is a bit easier to visualize) is always focused on “what bad things will happen when the Asians take over” and in this case when an Asian took over bad things happened, REALLY bad and they paid for it with their lives (in the eyes of the story, justifiably so). Fai Dan and Ethan Jeong are the two biggest authority figures on Feros that we see, and the fact that things went so badly under their leadership and both can die without remorse from the player character implies (whether you realize it or not) that in order to right the wrong or “liberate” the people from their disastrous Asian rulers, those who caused this disaster must pay with their lives, and thus the harm of the Yellow Peril occurs because it tells us through the narrative that you cannot allow the Asian takeover and you must FEAR it because it will bring pain and suffering. If it happens it must be ended— permanently, even at the cost of violence.

In the end, it’s about the observation of a trend on how the overall group is treated, since there are always exceptions and examples where the ending is not so bad for the individual. In this case, Fai Dan, at least in his portrayal, supports the trend.

Let's try to get this final live blog on my station 19 rewatch done. I'm currently laid up on my couch in mild pain but unable to do anything else.

I don't really like flashback episodes but i want one for the premiere since we are jumping so far ahead. I hate that this episode starts with a fight. But damn knowing what the fight is over, i love how loyal andy is to maya in this episode. Something ive wanted for her and the team. Qnd also jaina looks gorgeous.

The fire scene yay another fire on the fire show lmao. Feel like we missed some last year which im sure was covid related.

The marina scene ugh chefs kiss. I love how happy and giddy they are. I do wish we couldve gotten to see some of their month apart communication and their quarantining apart those two weeks when carina got back. I wrote a little something related to that and i may share before the premiere of season 5.

The quiet moment between carina saying her morning was better than those 6 weeks and then asking about mayas folks was a beautiful and real moment and i love it. So brief it could be overlooked but great choice for team.

The little bit of danielle and stefania that was them and adlibbed in this episode was so great also.

I love that rhey addressed how everyone was able to attend maskless and how safe the wedding was keeping the real world element in. Also vic love you and your chicken dance comment makes me sad that we didnt get it.

Vics parents trying to talk to her about theo is so cute.

Poor lawyer she'd be good for dean.

I understand some people dont come out until late in life but that is hard to hear that you havent loved the person youve been with for decades like you do this new person. That would hurt me so much to hear, like i couldve been with someone who is my great love if youd told me sooner. I love/hate this storyline for travis family.

Her grief during this day of happiness should've been acknowledged, even with just a remembrance table for him amd other family she lost to covid.

I do love this beautiful moment with vic though saying this isnt all just for maya.

Oh my how i love the maya confronting her father. She is the brave i want to be. Also what she says to her mom, yes chefs kiss. However when her mom shows up at the wedding, really the woman couldnt grab a nice shirt or dress to wear on her way out or on her way to the wedding.

I also love the look of pride on maya's moms face both at the house and the wedding.

Im sad we probably wont get any moments of her living with marina due to the time jump.

Ugh the choice that cost maya her promotion but ahouldnt have.

Also with all maya's options for clothes, couldnt they had dressed her mama in something borrowed from maya. Lol im sorry it bothers me so.

Vic's song for the intro is beautiful. Barrett has a beautiful voice.

Maya is so happy her mom is there and i love it. Also in my head at least one person videoing is doing it for the greys family who couldnt make it to the wedding for carina.

I also love maya singing along with vic to carina.

Queen of the clipboard forgetting to write her vows is special and funny. I love carina talking her down from a panic attack. Also her simple vow is beautiful and how carina who probably did write her vows saying we're good instead of reading them after seeing maya's mom in attendance and the look shared is everything.

I truly believe that was the moment she 100% knew maya had changed from end of season 3, was definitely all the way in. She knew what it meant for maya's mom to be there.

RWBY may only have passable plot writing but the character writing is actually pretty stellar.

Despite the huge cast. every character has at least a hint of internal conflict and depth based realistically on their backstory. even the relatively minor ones, Nora being aware of her unhealthy attachment to Ren and despite being in love with him deciding that actually dating him would be a bad idea. Mercury internalizing the idea that he's unlovable and only exists to be a murderer because of his dad's abuse, so convincing himself that he belongs in Salem's group. Ect.

But the thing I really want to focus on is the real effort that went into the adult characters.

I really love how they're all just.... people. Incredibly flawed people. In these "the son must make up for the sins of the father, the main character must learn to stand on their own" stories the typical choice to make is to frame the failed mentor figgures as unquestionably moraly wrong or incompetent. But in RWBY theres a really pleasant nuance to them.

Yes Ozpin lied and put the weight of the world on a 15 year old girl but its well shown that his distrust comes from centuries of failure and betrayal and him putting so much preassure on his students comes from a place of protection, as huntsmen they're never going to escape salem's plans so he can't wait untill theyre ready. It would have been so easy to pull the "well he's just as bad as Salem!" card (and I know the fandom does) but I love how he's just a guy that dosen't have any answers but is still trying his best despite everything

Ironwood isn't just a mad dictator, his actions are from a genuine place of trying to do good in the world. He just can't see the forest for the trees and decides that any action is justified if it's to stop salem. He's a product of atlas, profit and loyalty above all.

Qrow loves his family and wants to protect them more than anything but is held back by his own (in my oppinion really well handled) mental health issues and self loathing.

Hell even Lionheart though he was doing the right thing.

After losing so much, Tai can't bring himself to get involved. Summer's determination and hope made her a beacon in the darkness for her team... but it's also what got her killed in the end. And Raven.... will need her own post because I have too much to say about her.

They're all people and while, yes, the main characters need to learn from their mistakes and be better, its never that simple. Everyone has their own problems that hold them back. No one in Reminant is perfect, no one is free of fear or doubt or anger or loss, and thats the weakness that the grimm exploit.

I think Alan jones is right 🤷‍♀️ Daniel sounds like some rookie, why was he so rattled by the replays? None of the other drivers said anything about it why the hell is he having a tantrum? It obviously got to him bc he had a terrible restart and got eaten up by the pack behind him, I know we love babying the drivers but thats weak. And whether we like it or not people want to see that stuff

I debated whether to post this because to me you’re very wrong but actually I think it’s good to think about these things. And to try to see it from your perspective, maybe because so many people seem to think this way.

It’s really difficult, as someone who’s sort of - oh, this is wank but like - speaking from inside racing, cus I watched the Bahrain GP from a media centre surrounded by team personnel, not to get incredibly angry at this. So I’ve sat on it for like a week to calm down and think how to discuss this properly because it would be too easy to get emotional. I do get there is a gap in perception, here.

Just because other drivers didn’t speak up about it doesn’t mean that they felt unaffected by the footage being replayed over and over. Attitudes like Alan Jones’ are what makes them suppress things they have every right to speak out on, professionally. They absolutely should have the right to agree whether footage of their or their peers bodies being mangled and broken is used again and again or at the very least, we should all accord them the respect to listen to their opinions about it and invite them to talk about it more. 

When Grand Prix racing was first on TV they’d show drivers burning to death in their cars while the race carried on around them; we obviously don’t think that’s right anymore, both the callousness to the drivers’ lives and to broadcast someone dying violently for the sake of sport but at the time, it was viewed as part of the character. The TV camera doesn’t have any inherent ethics, it’s just a lens but what we choose to frame in it is important. 

The viewer has a passive role in what you’re shown; you can’t select it. If it’s on the broadcast, there’s an inherent assumption that it’s ok to be on the broadcast, that this is a good or interesting thing to see. I don’t know if Liberty being an American company, where crashes are replayed a lot, lot more is a factor here but it felt very unlike modern F1 to replay it so many times.

The way that we portray the drivers and the role we give them in being able to decide that and consent to it (or to terms that they broadly agree to) should be empathetic. Because then it doesn’t come across as cheap repetition, that encourages every armchair FIA safety expert to come out with their own nonsense version of events - I understand car safety structures a lot better than twitteruser471 who reckons if Romain was a better driver he would have simply been able to not be on fire and I would never attempt to hazard a guess about what happened in a crash without proper information and data.

People are curious about things - I think it would have been best to have shown it once, after it was clear Romain was ok and then to work on preparing analysis, have a statement and timeline of events and what we know happened with it ready for the end of the Grand Prix. Knowing what happened lets people process something, endless speculation is a route to panic and well, literally trauma. 

The drivers are filmed as part of competing in F1 but the idea that that gives the broadcasters the right to show whatever they like without needing to justify it is wrong and part of the culture that gets bandied about that they should be willing to endure anything to be in the sport. Yes, being an F1 driver is a privilege but that shouldn’t come parcelled with signing away the right of FOM to traumatise your mum.

Let’s be clear on one thing: Romain survived that crash but until the FIA investigation is concluded, we don’t know whether that was because you could have expected him to or a total fluke. Safety systems such as the halo did their job but the crash itself was unexpected, unprecedented, none of the systems on the car were designed to work in those circumstances, they just - thank god - managed to add up into a series of tiny bits of luck that did. What you see in that accident isn’t someone dying but a few millimetres of change it it could be; it is a deadly-high-speed impact, it is a deadly hot fire, it is the absolute limits of what the survival cell and halo can bear and try to protect the driver inside.

That can seem difficult to understand because he got out. But getting out and it being fine are very different things. Every crash is dangerous, freak things can happen at relatively low speeds and without anything apparently dramatic - like Billy Monger and Jamie Caroline’s British F4 crash. 

Romain’s crash is a deadly one. What you are watching on the replay is a tiny, sliver-thin chance that a man lived or at least, wasn’t horribly, critically wounded. I’m not saying that to be dramatic or to over-exaggerate it: a 53g crash through an Armco barrier, with a fuel fire, just is that serious.

Lewis has spoken often about just how dangerous F1 is - and how little people realise it still is - and Lando and a couple of the others have spoken about how scared their families are when they go racing. Replaying something so, so, so close to being deadly to the point of, as Daniel identified, amusement, is tasteless to the people that worry about them - including themselves - and reductive of the risks.

I guess if you don’t know anyone who races cars you could view it as a video game perspective. It’s ok, Romain got out, we passed that level and now it doesn’t matter. For a lot of people, though, what you see every time is all the ways he doesn’t. Because that was an unbelievably close one - Romain himself has talked about believing he was accepting death as he sat in the burning cockpit.

The interview, afterwards, that most got to me was Guenther Steiner. He’s a hard man, who’s been in racing a long time and is performatively aggressive, unsympathetic, in many ways the stereotype of what a brutally pragmatic team boss has to be. He stood there on Sky last Thursday shaking and stutteringly incoherent, five days after the accident, not able to look at the footage - because he nearly lost his driver. 

Every single one of Romain’s team was watching that footage as it was forcibly looped over the screens in the paddock and pit lane. Yes, you are glad he got out - of course, that’s the most important thing - but knowing that he did doesn’t make replaying that and seeing how small the margin by which he did really was any less upsetting.

If watching the crash means nothing to you, it doesn’t mean that the people who are affected by it are weak. Everyone has a different understanding of things - you can not care what you’re watching or even think that it would be acceptable to watch a driver die but for the vast majority of people in the sport, neither of those things are considered ok.

Okay but god that would cause so much angst, like, they team up, they comfort each other where no one can see, out of necessity because literally no one else knows what they're going through. (Okay I rambled quite a lot here I'm so sorry)

But like, imagine everytime they do something different, refuse to engage with what the script is forcing them to do and suddenly everyone is forced back to the beginning.

Like, Wilbur would probably break the most in the beginning (would this start at the Pogtopia arc, or before that? How far back do they have to go back every time they reatart? God that would be a sort of angst all on its own, half the time messing up purposely cause back here was so simple), since Dream is antagonistic but not a full fledged villain, and Quackity really hadn't entered his villain arc yet. And Wilbur, the poet, refuses to believe that this is the only story, he wrote himself a country, he created the symphony, he gets to choose how it ends. He refuses to do anything to his brother and friends, refuses to hurt Tommy. Of course, that doesn't work and he gets sent back to the beginning, in the end, he does lose himself, just not for the reasons that his family, his friends think (when Wilbur begs for death from philza, it is not a part of the play, the act, he just wants and end to this loop, maybe death will be an out, and imagine his surprise when it works. Imagine his surprise when its so much worse. Now he gets revived each time someone messes up, and it becomes a twisted relief from a different kind of loop)

Dream after this point would probably start ending the loops just before and during the exile arc, when he realises, oh, I'm the big bad of the story. The ultimate villain. First his friends abandon him, and why wouldn't they? He's horrible to them, he doesn't doesn't want to be, but what choice does he have? When he's forced to say he doesn't care for them, can't refute the claims that he doesn't care for them, doesn't love them. Then exile happens. And it's so much worse, cause he likes Tommy, he's one of his friends, and sometimes dream even thinks of him like a brother. And sometimes that shines through, he can be friends, then he's reminded oh no, apparently he has to a massive piece of shit now (all of the background stuff that happens, him commissioning the prison, the hall of attachments just makes this so much worse, whatever the hell is going on with Ranboo). He probably starts to really get distant, cause it's easier to go through the motions again and again and again if you actually dont care about the people around you (he cares so much, but hey, maybe there's some truth to attachments only being there to hurt you. Cut yourself off and you'll be free)

When the disc confrontation happens the first time,he thinks he's messed up something again cause everyone's here to stop him. Then he gets sent to prison and the next day happens. And it's still a torture, being isolated and treated like that, but at least he's alone, only has to act when people (rarely) visit. And then Tommy visits again, and then Quackity visits.

As for Quackity, I feel like he would have the easiest time, at first, after all he wasnt a villain at first, that change happens gradually. He only loops because he doesn't know the script, not because he refuses to do any actions, and sure some are harder than others, Tubbo's execution for one, but he's allowed to be against that, so it's justifiable. Techno's execution is justifiable (Dream can just tell him the behind the scenes information, it's fine, sure he dies, but what's one trauma in this time loop? He's got plenty to spare). And he's always been charasimatic, manipulative under certain lights, so thats easy. In fact, he goes so long that he doesn't even fully realise the villain arc he's undertaken until he realises that oh god, he has to go through with torturing Dream, someone he knows isn't a bad person, is forced into this the same way as he is, and each time Dream gives in, tells him what he want to know (no he doesn't, he never want to know, not like this), he gets sent back, doomed to repeat their actions. Every. Single. Day.

Imagine all threes surprise when they notice other veering off script, too. Not stuck in a loop, but noticing hey, haven't we done this before?. And for the first time in a long, long, long time, the three start to feel a glimmer of hope.

They end up reset to the very start of the Smp. A bit before the idea of L'manberg started to form. So yes, while originally, they're quite determined to find a way through the loop, as time goes on, they start purposely messing up for a breather-though only when they feel they truly can't take it, because it still means they have to go through everything again.

The three all get so close as a result of this whole thing, which makes everything so much worse when it comes to hurting each other-especially for Quackity. Sometimes he just-can't, stopping and sitting with Dream until Sam finds them and resets the loop.

Wilbur can do anything he wants in limbo....but he can't get out. Nothing he does will break the loop once inside. The first time it resets after his first few years in there, he can't stop shaking. The cold seems to have followed him right back to the start.

And Dream? As you said, exile is just about the worse for him. Because he's supposed to manipulate Tommy, make him think their friends as he hurts him. And maybe the worse part about that is that he's allowed to be nice to Tommy-genuinely nice...but only to an extent. Only because in the end, it will just be seen as part of his manipulations.

They're just all straight up suffering.

And then-

And then, everyone shifts a little bit to the left, and for the first time in a long time, they dare to hope.

But if they want to see if this is really what they think it is, well-they'll have to devote themselves more to their roles than ever.

Ok I know you've acknowledged it, and I know in your au Tord acknowledges it, but its been on my mind for a little and I have no idea where else to say it. But Doomed Timeline Tord (and I guess Happy family Tord Before Tobi fixed things) is not a good father. I know its been said but I've never seen anyone here bring up the fact that even he knows it, but makes no attempt to change. I can understand that losing Anya fucked him up badly, especially considering that now he has a son as the living reminder of just how badly he messed up, but that doesn't justify or excuse the fact that (it seems) he isn't trying. And don't even get me started on the stuff where he not only emotionally neglects but physically abuses Tobi (I don't know if this is canon but I'm hoping its not)

Im not gonna get into how mad I am at him though because we all know that Anya will have Hell hath no fury when Tord dies

This has been on my mind for a bit but for some reason of all things the haircut ask really hit me hard

And finally someone dropped it hot and hard. I have literally been waiting for someone to point it out and solidify it in text bc i was too lazy to get the ball rolling down a hill.

Here's a tangent to read.

Doomed Timeline Tord is basically just mentally stuck. He never makes attempts to change or make things better since thats what people with control issues do. If they feel like they lost control once in their life, they'll make attempts at taking back control.

He's had alotta times where he'd rather make things worst, bc things can ALWAYS be worst, instead if try to make things better with a chance he'll fail.

The best way Tord can do that in his current life is control his son to an unhealthy degree, from who he interacts with, his friends, his interests and even who he'll marry. (a.k.a keeping Tobi from having romantic relationships)

No Tord doesn't physically abuse Tobi, he does how ever hold very high expectations that Tobi exhausts himself to reach. Which is why having his friends to pick him up is so important to have. Also leading to other issues with relationships and venting/coping methods.

I'll be the first to confirm Tord and Anya are NOT a healthy couple, and I've said it before when accused of romantacizing that kinda relationship (im not, im just acknowledging they exist and in a dystopia that's the most likely outcome for two already unstable characters) Tord has control issues and a temper, while Anya is mentally broken and emotionally unstable, both needing therapy for their issues but never receiving it.

To that extent, in my friends version of my au, Delaine or Jenny would have been healthier options to balance out Tord, meanwhile, for Anya, Albert or Jenny would have been much healthier relationships, emotionally and mentally.

Even in Happy Timeline, Tord still isn't a great father but at least makes attempts to be better for his wife and kids.

When I wrote each short fic or anwsered a question, I was showcasing things from Tords P.O.V technically. Tord knows he fucked up and fucked up BADLY, but he doesn't WANT to change. In his own head, he knows he's not a hero uniting the world, he isn't disillusioned, he's just an asshole stuck in a mental state he built himself, and bc he's literally the top of the latter, no one has the power or authority to smack him the fuck out of it.

The only one crazy enough to give him a much needed right hook is dead, and his son is too scared to be a disappointment to try.

In every sense of the word, Tord isnt a good father in this au, and thats to drive home just how messed up the dystopian world is, and how much Tobi needs his friends. And literally the only way he would have been CLOSE to being one is if he never was Red Leader to start with.

OH BABEY A DOUBLE (I’m gunna put Qrow in a separate post to avoid making this too long) thank you so much!

Warning: This is a PRO IRONWOOD POST. I also go into team RWBY taking responsibility for their abuse towards Ozpin. Don’t read this if you don’t like it. You’ve been warned

My top three two ships for Ironwood

1) Ironqrow (Ironwood x Qrow) {Volumes 3-7}

I have loved the idea of these two since the fall of beacon. When they first interacted, I wasn’t too sure about them because it seemed like they didn’t really like each other.. but that scene where all the robots were turning on beacon and Qrow spotted ironwood, ran at him with his scythe, only to jump over him and save him from a Grimm, sold the ship to me. It was clear that they didn’t actually despise each other. Qrow wasn’t quick to point fingers; he knew that what was going on wasn’t James’ fault, and he even tried to add a little bit of comic relief to the scene. (When ironwood’s ship fell, and Qrow smirked “well, it won’t be much of a walk”)

My love for the ship was reinforced in v6 (yeah I know it was the fan service volume but I’m rolling with it anyway). Qrow knew that they HAD to get to ironwood in order to complete their goal. He trusted James, and he knew that he was a smart and capable leader who would know what to do (ah,, the good old days ;;)

And then in the early episodes of v7, their bickering that we once saw in v3 was non existent. They were happy to see each other, and James even initiated a hug. He was just so relieved to see him ;; it made my heart melt, I remember posting about this moment so much, all over instagram and tumblr. I loved them so dearly.

2) Ironwood x Glynda (idk if they have a ship name)

God,, I always loved them. that scene in v2 with Ironwood and Glynda standing together in the dead of night looking over the city of vale was so special to me. I love Glynda and her character, she is so dynamic. that scene with her and ironwood showed to us that she truly respected and cared for him and his well-being. She was worried for him as well. I just wish they had more interactions before his death. they would have been very sweet and POWERFUL together.

My three least favourite ships for Ironwood

1) Ironqrow {Volumes 7-8}

Oh boy. RT really knows how to take something good and just, ruin it huh.

I feel as though I don’t need to dive too deep into this (as I’ll be covering Ironwood’s fall from grace later) but yeah... The fight with Qrow and Clover was.. unfortunate. Everyone seemed to lose their braincells in that scene, and the moment it was over, Qrow was dead set on killing Ironwood for some reason even though he was the one who decided to side with a literal murderer, but go off MKEK you really did something there...

Yepp this absolutely killed the ship for me in canon (though I stilln love thinking about them out of the canon setting), I was an absolute wreck after this scene. they deserved better.

2) Ironwood x Winter

don’t worry I’m not about to pull the “IRONWOOD WAS AN ABUSIVE FATHER FIGURE AND GROOMED HER CAREERRHYUGGHR” no.

I always saw Ironwood as a POSITIVE father figure to winter, even before v7. We knew that winter was one of his best soldiers, and was most likely one of his students before then. I believe that Ironwood gave winter a chance at something great, to leave her actual abusive father and hone her skills as a soldier instead of becoming the heiress to a company that she did not want to be tied to. I believe Ironwood was a stellar father figure and role model to her, and that is the reason why I do not ship them. their relationship was so much deeper than that. it was found family.

3) Ironwood x Salem

What the fuck. Like actually what? This was a thing? What is it with this fandom and glorifying abusive relationships... I remember seeing a lot of people trying to justify it like “awh salem was so sweet with him she just wanted him to stop fighting. She would leave him alone after!!” Thats manipulation honey, we don’t fuck with that here. no. Absolutely not

My biggest criticism for Ironwood

It’s no secret to us in the RWDE community that his fall into the role of the villain was POORLY WRITTEN AND WE ALL HATE IT SO FUCKING MUCH. where the hell did this even come from? oh I know! TEAM RWBY LYING TO HIS FACE AFTER HE WAS NOTHING BUT KIND AND GENEROUS TO THEM. god I’m heated already.

I’ve talked about his stupid semblance before but it doesn’t even matter because his semblance wasn’t the cause of his descent anyway. We were all HOPING that it was but nope! it was him “losing his humanity” because he lost his other arm. How fucked up is that.

Shitty writing aside, I know James had flaws even before the shitshow that was v7-8, but honestly there was nothing he did that I can criticize harshly. He was a good and honest man with good intentions and a pure, big heart made of gold. Of course he made mistakes and of course he wasn’t perfect, but he was always trying to do the right thing to protect the people. He was a good man until MKEK decided they needed a reason to kill off another headmaster.

My favourite thing about Ironwood

His willingness to sacrifice himself to save others. During the fall of beacon he told the students that they didn’t have to stay, even though he could have used the help greatly. But he KNEW that they weren’t ready to handle a crisis like this, and he didn’t want to force them into a responsibility that could have left them emotionally/physically damaged, or worse.

During the Ironwood and Watts fight, IRONWOOD MANGLED HIS OWN ARM TO CAPTURE WATTS. He was so headstrong and brave and he wanted to do everything he could to prevent Salem, even if that meant hurting himself and losing another part of himself. God I miss him so much ;; I’m tearing up a little writing all of this...

A head canon I have for Ironwood

I love creating head canons for characters, it always makes them feel more real to me. one of my biggest head canons is that, in a peaceful world setting, he would enjoy sleeping in on the weekends. ;;. He is a headmaster AND a general which means he has to follow a strict schedule all the time. Maybe this is coming from my desire to take care of him and make sure he is happy and healthy and not stressed out.. But yeah, lazy Sundays, sleeping in late. pls let him sleep he needs so much sleep. What I would change about Ironwood if I were making a rewrite

Strap in kiddos I’ve been thinking about this for a very long time. I’m sure that someone has come up with a similar concept, but I will share my ideas anyway (: I am going to preface this by saying that for this rewrite to work, we need to have Winter receive the Winter maiden powers from Freya in V7.  To start, we will have to go back all the way to v2 when Ironwood was first introduced. I would have Ozpin and Glynda share their concerns to each other about Ironwood bringing all of his ships to look over the festival, but I would take that time to thoroughly explain his semblance. His semblance is stupid, so I would make some changes. To start off, I wouldn’t make it passive. The way it is now is just,, a weird way to give him a mental illness without actually giving him a mental illness. Activating it would have to be a decision that he made if he knew that he had to make decisions that would be hard for him. This way if his semblance caused him to do something actually horrible, he would be directly accountable for it, instead of blaming him for something that he couldn’t control. Semblances are a representation of the user, so with time and with more stress put onto Ironwood, I could see him falling victim to his own semblance if he were to abuse it too much. This will help as we lead into a better way to write his fall from grace. 

From there, I would keep pretty much everything the same until we get to v7. Team RWBY arrives in Atlas and gets arrested and brought to Ironwood just as they do in canon. This time, however, we have Oscar explain EVERYTHING. No lying. Salem cannot be killed. Oscar explains that Ozpin shut himself off after team RWBY forced the truth out of him, and while the truth is a lot for Ironwood to handle, he understands why Ozpin kept it a secret. He shuns team RWBY for their methods and explains why their actions were unnecessary and abusive, but agrees to help them anyway since he knows that they all need to come together if this is going to work. Hence, his arc kind of goes backwards. Instead of team RWBY having his trust from the beginning, they will need to work to gain it back. 

He takes Oscar under his wing to try and draw Ozpin back out. He greets Qrow, they fall in love, he also formally introduces the team to the Ace Ops. The Ace Ops take an IMMEDIATE backseat in the story. We don’t need more characters. For the sake of this rewrite specifically, they are barely around. We are focusing on Ironwood and his growth/relationships. I would explore more times to show the deep connection between him and Winter. As I said earlier, I see him as a healthy father figure for her, so I would definitely focus on that for a bit. At this point, Winter would not have received the maidens power yet, so we could have a scene of him assuring her that she is a perfect fit for the role, and encouraging her and just,, you know, solidifying that he wasn’t pressuring her into doing it. 

Carrying on with the main plot, instead of being left in the dark for the whole season, Ironwood is already aware that Salem cannot be killed. This gives him and the rest of the team a lot of time to work on a new plan to defeat her. They spend lots of time training, Ironwood takes care of them, offering his resources to them. Overtime the team do start to gain his trust little by little again, but this will all kinda fall apart when Salem arrives. 

With stress levels higher than ever, he activates his semblance. Team RWBY and friends KNOW about his semblance and they understand why he is acting irrationally. Maybe they have different ideas than him, but they would not directly oppose him. This completely fixes him from becoming a cartoon villain. Team RWBY and friends would work WITH Ironwood at a distance to fix amity and get global communications back up safely. From there, Ironwood could deliver a message to the world about Salem. Since people know who he is, it will make the message more impactful. Just like he did with his message to Mantle.

Qrow and Winter are positives in his life. They keep trying to ground him and bring him back to reality, but he will not deactivate his semblance. He is too scared of what’s to come with Salem. They support him in this, and do not turn their back on him. 

Winter receives the maiden’s power, and is told to open the vault to obtain the staff and raise atlas further into the sky to save his people. Winter agrees, why wouldn’t she? They have already evacuated most of mantle to atlas anyway. In situations like this it’s impossible to save everyone. RWBY could whine and bitch if they wanted to, but there is nothing they could do in this situation because, for the sake of this rewrite, they wouldn’t be as stupid as they are in the canon proper. 

The vault is open and the staff is vulnerable. It is in this moment that the ACTUAL VILLIAN comes into play. Watts took advantage of the security from behind the scenes, giving Salem the exact time that the vault was open. And thanks to him overhearing everything, he knows that all she needs to do is use the staff, and Atlas will fall. Salem appears in the room, and the big finale battle would occur. They weren’t ready yet. They hadn’t finalized the plan to stop her without killing her. Team RWBY Oscar and Qrow would do their best to keep Salem distracted while Winter and Ironwood speak to the staff. Meanwhile, Neo could breach Ironwood’s office and retrieve the relic of knowledge for Salem. 

The battle plays out, she keeps coming back, the team gets tired, Salem loses her patience and just PLOWS through them to get to the staff. She enters the realm and the mystical world around them begins to shatter and break. With that much concentrated evil in this place coming up out of nowhere, it would be sure to shift the balance. 

She goes head to head against Winter and Ironwood for the staff. She knows that using the staff will cause Atlas to come crashing down, so that is exactly  what she does. Since he is already out, she just gives him a command. It doesn’t matter what it is. Atlas starts to fall. She strikes a lethal blow to Ironwood (Keeping the theme of her killing headmasters) and flees with the staff. Qrow runs to his side, he and winter are crying, Team RWBY is upset, OZPIN IS UPSET. With his aura broken and his semblance down, he smiles at them all, says that he is proud of them for their work and he knows that they will find a way to defeat her. He tells them to get out and save themselves, save as many people as they can. They do that, but for further angst, Qrow stays with him, holding him and crying against him as Atlas falls. Team RWBY use the gravity dust keeping Atlas falling slowly to their advantage. They get as many people as they can into airships and send them to mistral. They then make their own way to Vacuo... Since global communications are back up, the world would know about this. This would give Shade academy a good chance to prepare. (damn I could write a fic)

What I think of Ironwood’s allusion and what I would change.

It’s dumb the way that CRWBY has portrayed it. In the story of the Wizard of Oz, the tin man doesn’t have a heart, but learns to love overtime. I used THIS aspect for helping my rewrite of Ironwood. He was hardened at the beginning, but managed to trust again and eventually smiled and said that he was proud of team RWBY and friends in his dying moments. It’s just more impactful that way I think.
