Honestly I'm starting to suspect the issue might be that Ed's a side character.
Like. I don't think he should be a side character. I wouldn't have deemed him such in S1. I called it "still in the setup phase of his arc" when I was writing S1 meta, because he had a lot of characterization and importance and it made sense in the story that he hadn't really begun exerting agency and experiencing consequences yet.
But if he was in setup, then 1x10 would have kicked off said arc. Yet S2 isn't interested in giving him agency for change, either.
The only thing he's working through is being Stede's love interest.
Stede is a protagonist. His abandonment of Mary was conceived of as an essential character flaw from the initial development of his journey, and the whole of S1 was about his arc to reckon with that choice and the consequences. Similarly, while the inept and oblivious boss persona is played for laughs, it's still a point of characterization at the same time. One that develops as he goes through the story. I personally think his arc as a character stumbles pretty hard in S2 - killing Ned leads to partying it up and then saving the day by helping massacre British mooks, but also it's maybe really bad and traumatic? - but I don't ever doubt they are approaching him with the intent for character development as a main character.
I'm starting to doubt with Ed.
Yeah, all his mirrored issues to Stede's felt like the basis of letting Edward grow and change for himself after S1. He had family trauma. He has his own version of Mary and a crew he was obligated to and failing. I thought it sounded super interesting to explore Blackbonnet similarities and differences while seeing them address different versions of the same challenges and flaws... Only coming at them from wildly different directions. And just like they acknowledged Stede bore some measure of responsibility to make right with his supporting characters, I expected Edward would have to do the same.
Only... I guess he doesn't.
It makes no sense from the angle that Edward is also a main character in this show. His disregard for the people around him - most of whom are subject to his authority and whims - is not treated as a potential point of growth. It's barely even treated as an issue. But if you consider the parallels are less about establishing flaws for Edward and more about creating points of sympathetic understanding for Stede...?
If Edward is a side character love interest with no independent growth arc planned - albeit a cool one with lots of fun personality - then the important bits of echoing Stede's flaws could just be about how Stede can relate? The 1x04 lecture about a Captain's responsibility is a lesson for Stede. Being trapped in an unbearably dull life that maps near perfectly to Stede's marriage serves to highlight how perfectly in sync Ed would be for Stede. Even confessing to killing his dad... the one place that stunning moment of vulnerability goes is *checks notes* giving Ed a reason to go find Stede after Ned and level up their relationship. Again. Stede gets more development out of Edward's tragic backstory than Edward does.
If you want a really hot take, Edward's entire suicide era is pretty much just a vehicle to get mermaid Stede. Not like it gets any acknowledgement once that's past.
In S2 especially, Ed's character traits feel like romantic flavor text. They make him interesting or sympathetic or attractive. Stede is speeding through meaningful dialogue cutscenes like he's romancing a NPC in a videogame. But there's no narrative push for Edward to do anything outside that romance.
One thing I've actually been thinking about for awhile is the parallel between Mary Bonnet and Izzy Hands and, more specifically, how Ed and Stede are treated in their abandonment of them.
Izzy and Mary are mirrors of each other. Izzy is to Ed as Mary is to Stede. The one the captain is duty-bound to. The one they made a promise to stand by. Stede and Ed fail to communicate with them and when they do, they choose the wrong times and method (Ed talking around his boredom with his way of life while they are under threat of death, Stede surprising Mary with the boat). They don't listen to their respective partners (Ed basically ignoring Izzy while Izzy begs for a plan on how to not die, Stede not remembering that Mary hates the ocean). And Izzy and Mary are the caretakers for the people they're responsible for, with Ed and Stede only giving them attention when it's time to play (Ed choosing to stay in his cabin and making Izzy do most of the actual managing of the crew until Ed finds something new to be excited about, Stede being shown to ignore his children until it's time to play pirates). They also both lie to their partners about their plans when confronted (Stede claiming he'll "have it stopped" when referring to the boat before lying about having it made at all, Ed claiming he's planning on killing Stede even though he never wanted to). They both abandon their partners' plans (Ed deciding not to kill Stede, Stede running out on Mary). Izzy and Mary are both shown to be unhappy with their respective partners, but stay with them out of a sense of duty or responsibility (Izzy's threat to resign comes after he's been struggling to manage the crew and his life for some time, Mary saying straight up that she knows this isn't the life she or Stede wanted). There's like a million other things, but other people have made better posts about that
The point is that Discomfort in a Married State is about both Stede and Mary being unhappily married, but also Ed and Izzy being unhappy in the same dynamic. As much as they try, no one in either party are actually HAPPY with the way things are. Ed is bored out of his mind and feels like life is flat and has nothing to look forward to. Stede feels the same way about his life with Mary. Mary is dealing with an impulsive husband while taking care of her children and struggling to manage Stede's mood while still living her life in a way that doesn't make her miserable. Izzy does the same. Even though Mary and Izzy are upholding the relationship and staying true to their bond, they are obviously unhappy too.
What I'm interested in discussing is the way both Stede and Ed are treated by the narrative as it regards their betrayal of their partners.
Stede is shown to be in the WRONG for abandoning Mary. She's happier without him, yes, but it's pretty clearly stated that him just up and leaving her and their children was a DICK MOVE and he has to deal with that. He's made to come back to a world that no longer has a place for him in it. His children have forgotten him or resent him, his wife has found actual love with someone else, and he's no longer fit for the life he abandoned (not that he ever was, really). Stede is shown the consequences of his actions, how he hurt people by leaving and also how people are better off without him. He's punished by the narrative, made to feel uncomfortable and guilty. This makes sense!
Stede being depressed in his life is not an excuse to just... run away from it. We're shown that him leaving was a good thing, but him playing with the emotions of the people in his life by deciding when and if he wants them to be in his life at all and trying to dictate that just isn't the responsible thing to do. It's not until he finally sits and has an actual conversation with Mary where he listens to her that they're both able to move on fully. They're able to agree on an outcome, they Talk It Through and are both happier for it.
Ed imo is never treated the same way as it concerns his betrayal of Izzy. He lied to Izzy and then went back on their plan, doesn't say a word when Izzy is banished from the ship (doesn't even try to stop him from dueling Stede in the first place), and emotionally abandons him pretty much immediately after meeting Stede. Izzy is shown looking for direction and guidance from a man he trusts and who is supposed to be looking out for his best interests, only to be dismissed and mocked. Izzy repeatedly goes to Ed for direction, asks him "what do we do" or "you told me you would do this, so let's follow through" only for Ed to turn around and do something completely different. And then with the Act of Grace, he plans on running away and leaving Izzy behind entirely. Ed's betrayal of Izzy SHOULD mirror Stede's abandonment of Mary.
But Ed is never punished for it. The way Stede goes back to Mary in a time of crisis and the way Ed goes back to the crew (and Izzy) is the same situation. But where Stede has to deal with the consequences for his selfishness, Ed just... doesn't. He has to deal with his breakup, yeah, but not how he really was just going to leave the crew behind. He tortures and hurts his crew and specifically Izzy, but he's allowed back on the ship as long as he wears a cat bell. He doesn't even appear bothered by it. He never has a moment like Stede and Mary get where a conversation is had and faults are acknowledged on both sides.
Where Stede had to recognize his mistakes and grow, Ed gets off with a slap on the wrist. Mary gets better without Stede dragging her down, but Izzy falls apart without purpose until the crew give him a new purpose in being their unicorn
I don't necessarily think this is a bad thing or even poor writing if it was explored more. It mostly just perplexes me. Why make these connections between these characters at all? It fascinates me
I really wish we could see Mary and Izzy interact. Just once. So Izzy could meet someone who understands

Why do you support aegon who is a rapist but you hate rhaegar. Both cheated on their wives to rape other women. And aegons bastards definitely would put helaena’s children in danger. It’s almost sad how much their stories parallel.
I find this line of questioning disingenuous because if you knew my opinion, you'd know that, unlike Rhaegar fans, I've never said Aegon is a good king or person and do not "support" him, but he can be a great character. Everyone in this story is varying degrees of horrific and reap what they sow. My issue is that Aegon is framed as a cartoonish monster from the go, specifically to further prop up Rhaenyra (while PEDOPHILE Daemon, evil in ways Aegon can only dream of, is some "cool" grandpa), and to condemn Alicent, rather than his rapist father Viserys. Are we not sick of them making every third character a rapist, deliberately or accidentally, as shock value or an edgy writing device? The entire point of the Dance is that both are terrible leaders, two cheeks of the same arse, if you will, yet one side is given the worst interpretation and the other white washed (why are Daemon/Corlys/Rhaenys/Viserys/Rhaenyra not condemned for ANYTHING?). If we're going by Mushroom's accounts, will Rhaenyra have Alicent and Helaena gang raped? I thought not. So why Aegon?
I like characters like Littlefinger, Tywin, Joffrey, etc, who are worse than Aegon and Rhaegar combined. This is ASOIAF, even your fan favourites like Tyrion and the Hound are despicable rapists/murderers/pedos. My issue is when the narrative/fan base will absolve certain characters for the same things that others are condemned for. Aegon- grey/villain- being a run of the mill, Robert Baratheon type tramp as king, in an inevitable civil war he's essentially just another pawn in and is never absolved for his crimes, is not the same as Rhaegar- a so called hero- impregnating a noblewoman, starting a war and it being framed as justified because it was for "love". THAT'S my problem.
And Aegon is just more interesting to me, he is a bunch of fascinating contradictions. The most self aware character on the show, knows all his deficiencies, yet he is incapable of betterment, preferring to stay stuck in a cycle of anger, self pity and loathing. A drunkard, who is the only one who sees the throne for what it is and does not want it. Infinitely far from a moral man as we saw, but the one Targaryen seemingly sickened by incest. He is sent over the edge in rage and grief over the loss of a child he never bothered to love when he was alive, the cycle of neglect he continues from his own father. Wants to please his mother and craves her affection, but all he ever does is cause her pain. Weak and seemingly cowardly, but brave enough to fight his own battles. Depressed, crippled and burned with no desire to live, yet refuses to die. Starved of affection and desperate to be loved, while never really doing anything to be worthy of it. He has few redeeming qualities, but the most beautiful and significant bond between dragon/rider is given to him. With one of the best actors on the show in Tom Glynn Carney, good writers would be able to bring that to life as a bitter tragedy, and yet they have failed at every turn. You don't need to be a good person to be a compelling character.

Baby
Parents: So, Ka'zalii has no knowledge of who laid his egg and he's not really interested at this point in his life. His parent is still alive, raiding on the other side of the astral, a sorcerer who got entangled with abberant magic years ago.
He is the spitting image of Ka'zalii, if they did ever meet, they'd know instantly they were related. Birth: Straightforward egg hatching, on time, chomped and clawed his way out with no problems. First word: Knowing githyanki, probably a swear or a battlecry. Overheard from a raider arguing with the varsh or something probably. It's a marker of strength in your alien toddlers when they start swearing. When they first walked: I get the impression with githyanki that they're getting around by themselves pretty quickly. With how big those eggs are when they're about to hatch, they're strong enough to get moving straight away. So, his first little wobble around was under the encouragement of the varsh to throw themselves at each other and get clawing. Tantrum: I'm using my own toddler as a gauge for this because I picture Ka'zalii being similar. Chill as fuck most of the time, but explosive when a tantrum happens. Thankfully, this is before any magic manifests but still, tiny ball of frog rage over something so trivial. First sickness: It's more likely an injury than a sickness I think and probably a bite from a clutchmate. Thunderstorm: Immediately loves them, absolutely mesmerized by them. Not that his creche experienced them on its asteroid, but they can see them on the planet below and feel the atmosphere of them.

Childhood:
Friends: There were two clutchmates he got close to early on, but the sa'varsh put a stop to that very quickly. Sabotaged their friendship quite expertly and encouraged them to fight each other often. Ka'zalii ended up in a fight to the death with one of them not long after. One of them still lives as a m'lar in Tu'narath. Siblings: He has one sibling from the same parent, but neither of them know they're related. They're called Vel, a psionic warrior. Currently off on their own insane adventure. If they ever reunite, they'll both have endless stories to tell. Getting into trouble: Frequently. When his wild magic manifests, he's causing chaos accidentally quite a lot. Undisciplined and volatile magic that his sa'varsh takes as a personal slight.
There's a few instances of sneaking around the creche and getting into rooms he's not supposed to be in too. This ends up being how he finds out he's fated for the next culling. Games: He learns card games and dice games from the older gith when he's a bit older. When he's small, games mostly consist of wrestling and fighting with clutch mates. Learning something new: Swordsmanship, his magic manifesting and learning to combine the two in battle. He took to his magic much faster than a blade, but while swordplay could be controlled and disciplined, his magic was definitely not. Trauma: The events that are the most vivid in his memory involve his magic. His magic being wild meant it was out of control often and undisciplined. His sa'varsh treated this as deliberate defiance and punished him for it. The scars on his back are the only scars he'd be rid of if he could. Obviously, this did nothing to help him learn to direct the surges, it just taught him to anxiously avoid using spells as much as possible.

Teenager:
First love: Aside from a bit of experimenting and post battle relief, the first real connection he had to anyone was to Zeth. A ranger around his age, met after leaving his creche. They're still inseparable and when Ka'zalii becomes kith'rak, Zeth serves under him (huhuhu) as sarth and skilled assassin. Rebellion: Goes without saying really. Small acts of defiance throughout his teenage years unfortunately got him noticed as a problem. Such as sneaking into rooms with various records and going through them. His name ended up on the list for the next culling, leading to his departure. He was recruited to the Sha'sal Khou not long after leaving his creche. Running away: Ran away from his creche at around 17. His name was recommended for the next culling, the final push needed to persuade him to leave. He spent a few years assuming he was being pursued and didn't stay put for long. It led to his recruitment and meeting people who would become extremely important connections over the years. Reckless behaviour: So much so. Whether it's a side effect of his wild magic, or simply his nature, he never could quite decide. But he gave into the impulses often and with wild abandon. (He still does, much to the dismay of everyone around him, except Dahlia.) The time away from his creche, on the planet it orbited, were treated as opportunities to just unleash all that pent up stress and fling spells without fear of consequences. For the most part. Anything dangerous, with small odds of success, he was drawn towards. Peer pressure: There was a lot of pressure from his instructors, from the older warriors and from his clutch mates to gain control of his magic. It had the opposite effect if anything, you can't beat the wild magic out of someone, despite his sa'varsh's efforts. Growing pains: He ended up being 6'1" by the time he stopped growing, so he had plenty of this. Not that it was really acknowledged, endure and bear it like any good githyanki should. You take growing pains to a ghustil, you get laughed out the door. Taking responsibility: From an outside perspective, he took responsibility for his own life fairly early on, after leaving his creche. But from his point of view, he ran away from his responsibility to follow the path chosen for him. Instead of forcing his magic into cooperation, he failed and chose to evade his own death. Eventually, he views his departure as something he had to do to survive, but it takes him years to get to that point.

Adulthood: Their "first time": Some time after leaving his creche, he ends up with an astral pirate crew and stays with them for a while. He ends up in a bit of a thing with the captain, who likely takes advantage of his desperate situation a bit. It isn't long before he finds a better place among a mercenary crew of kin. Serious relationships: I went into this a bit before, but Zeth is his first 'serious' relationship, as serious as gith get. Then it's an open relationship with each other and others as flings and post battle relief, until he meets Lae'zel. They start out as a fling, until not long after the second time they sleep together, he looks at her and has an oh fuck moment. He is catching feelings and that's bad. Keeps it as quiet as possible, but is not subtle at all, the others notice immediately. Cue relentless innuendos from Astarion and Shadowheart and endless encouragement from Karlach. Then the act 2 romance scene happens, dramatic duel where he gets absolutely flattened and loves every damn second of it. He worships the ground she walks on, he'd follow her anywhere. Work: There are some short lived piracy and mercenary jobs while he finds his feet. Then he gets recruited by the Sha'sal Khou and dedicates himself to it completely. Spy work, sabotage, the odd bit of assassination, disguises, eventually awarded the title of kith'rak and has his own little outpost and circle of kin he trusts utterly. Leaving home: He left his creche while he was still a teen, but it affected him for many years after. He doesn't really start confronting it until his time on Faerun and the whole netherbrain ordeal. Wyll is the one to break through the githyanki exterior and get some stories out of him and when Shadowheart shares her wolf memory, he shares one of his own memories in return. Aging: Age is a weird one for him. He's spent a lot of time on the astral plane, so he only counts the time he spends on the material. By the time the netherbrain is defeated, that amounts to around 28/29 years. But it has been 248 years since his hatching on the asteroid his creche exists on. Finding your place: The Sha'sal Khou was the first real purpose he felt he belonged to, but he refuses to think about how much of that was recruitment tactics. They got him when he was young, vulnerable, essentially homeless, easy target. He starts to question his place and the goals of his organization after becoming aware of the teachings of Orpheus and especially after actually meeting him. Lae'zel's conviction helps him analyse things a bit more closely, I imagine they had many a late night discussion in camp about it all. He confides in her often in the end. Eventually, he does defect to Orpheus' rebels, envisioning a civil war coming after Vlaakith's demise. There's also the couple of AUs for this version of events with Dahlia (@corvitine) being a catalyst in one timeline and Vanquish (@des-no9) being the catalyst in another. Starting a family/found family: Found family first of all. He doesn't realize this, but he has a lot of people around him that he should rely on. His inner circle that follow him to the rebels when he leaves: Zeth, Ka'a'dith, Ralith. The friends he makes in Faerun, all of the companions, they all keep in touch with each other I like to think. I also hc he goes back to Y'llek to get Varrl out of there, whether they have a sibling relationship or not, I haven't explored yet. He and Lae raise Xan and he has two eggs himself afterwards. In the Dahlia timeline, he ends up with a huge extended family from her, they end up with a sibling relationship and are absolute menaces together. They are the perfect reckless jigsaw pieces to each other. In Vanquish's timeline, he ends up with Lae a bit later, but he clicks with Van so quickly. They are also a nightmare together for anyone around them and it's great. ───────────────── ・ 。゚☆: .☽ . :☆゚.─────────────────

We all know James and Lily live a long happy life together but do you know how they met? Was it on the Hogwarts Express where one accidentally bumped the overhead luggage and caused it to drop on the other? Or was it because Lily wanted to know who lets their dog pee on her lovely Petunia that she keeps next to her door and waits to yell at him as he went about his morning routine? Who knows? Who will tell? And just so everyone can know the different answers to the above question, this year’s theme for jilytober fest is…🥁🥁🥁🥁 ‘MEET CUTES/UGLIES!’

We all know honey gets sweeter when you stir it up, but can you make it bitter too? What happens when we give you a fluff prompt but ask you to give us angst? We get bittersweet jily, addictive and delicious. Oh and how about when you turn our angsty prompt into sweet nothings and sugar coated love declarations? Absolute delight! PLEASE like meatsleep/sewnkin is such an overlooked arg with many quirks hidden underneath.
Maybe I'm just a little schizo gremlin (good thing) that likes to go over mostly dead series more than one time to see all the details or maybe people just don't know how to appreciate things /hj
I'm gonna give a screenshot the list of some fun things I've noticed:
Reminder that "one character" means Meat or Sewnkin as its not specified who records which video cannonically.
I couldn't remember anything else about the story itself but i can provide some behind the scenes fun facts taken directly from the AMA. I'll probably post it separately sometime.
And now onto another thing.
When people say that you can't squeeze out a proper character out of these two guys, they are lying.
Not only is there the traditional way (letting your imagination run wild because YOU are the writer of the series) but there's also diving in deep, takin note of certain behaviours, taking in how they interact on twitter etc..
Just because they aren't like traditional characters, doesn't mean they don't exist.
They are more what I like to call "blank canvas characters". Where it's up for interpretation who they are. And I think it's a great creative outlet! /pos
I've always known human psychology well even if I'm not interested in it. I observe and take mental notes of humans. I could be a therapist, speaking honestly. But I just don't want to.
So yeah, that's why I am like this.
I like writing and am creative so that's why I have some meat AUs as well.
Now, I don't know what to exactly write about the two guys..
I have already mentioned that Sewnkin probably likes hanging around abandoned places, scaring people and just being a cryptid. Backed up by the tweet "Silent hill new Brunswick please find Sewnkin again"
Now, I don't know anything about silent hill (Both the games and the real life case, it could be referring to either but Dan Bell has a video about the irl one) so Meat could be comparing Sewnkin to a character/person or saying that Sewnkin is gone again and needs to be found. One of the rare moments where the uploader is known (in this case the tweet uploader is Meatsleep).
On a quick side note I want to say that the phrase "Meatsleep is Sewnkin and Sewkin is Meatsleep" refers to the non story wise fact that the same people are behind those channels (I say those because those two channels aren't, maybe 'weren't' because I'm not sure if they still exist, the only ones that exist/existed, I can't find how many but owlwithmoth and neuaryfirst are suspected to be by the creators as well, for the love of me I can't remember how the latter one is spelt). They have been known to say things about themselves but in a mysterious way like usual.
What puzzles me is the "prove the disciple" tweet cause as you saw in the screenshot I thought it was about how Meat is a disciple of Sewnkin but in the AMA they (creators) also say something about a kidney being sufficient. Makes me think maybe Meat gave Sewnkin a part of his body (kidney) to be taught by Sewnkin. Going great lengths. Or maybe it was a requirement (for those who don't know what sufficient means, it means "enough" or "adequate", aka a conversation I would imagine between them "What do I need Todo to be your disciple? What do I need to give?" "A kidney is adequate enough.")

Edit: yup I had to edit in seconds after uploading. I just wanna make a comparison and similarity- imagine FNaF. A developers last resort. But it accidentally blew up. It even made the horror game community have a reset. Having games trying to replicate it in order to achieve similar success. It has ups but its ultimate demise was when the series caused the creator to be cancelled and 'retired' from the series (not really imo lol), but it did bring great memories. Sounds familiar? Yep, same phenomenon with the meatsleep series. New concept in the arg community, original idea, amateur creators, last resort, cultural reset in the arg community, tons of copycats and unintentional copycats, harassment, giving up.. Both are different franchises but both had a similar outcome. Another instance of "humans destroy whats different and/or original".

(SPOILER WARNING! GO WATCH ON NETFLIX FIRST IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS!) So I watched an anime movie called Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop...
...And the male lead, Cherry, is SO AUTISTIC CODED and I relate to him so much!
This is him...first off, the headphones around his neck aren't used AT ALL for listening to music. He uses them SOLELY for blocking out loud noises and to give himself the APPEARANCE of listening to music just so people don't talk to him. I do this often as well, though I do also use mine for music if too much noise gets through. He gets visibly overwhelmed and is quick to put on his headphones when it gets too loud (so am I), like in this scene where Mr. Fujiyama is talking too loud for him.
You can see that he's clearly distressed by this, and when it happens again later, he even TELLS Mr. Fujiyama that he's too loud after he quickly puts his headphones back on. When he meets Smile, he bluntly points out her braces (I watched the sub, and he just stares at her braces and says the word 'braces', I don't know about the dub), which causes Smile to run away since she is self-conscious about her buck teeth and braces. Cherry also doesn't make eye contact as much as a "normal" person would, speaks with a quieter, more monotone voice than the other characters, and talks as little as he possibly can, because he is not good at talking and gets extremely anxious when he has to talk to people he isn't comfortable with. When Smile calls him to find her phone after their phones accidentally get switched, Cherry freezes up and can't speak, he can't even ANSWER the call because of his anxiety, leaving his friends to do it for him. This is just like me, I freeze up in social situations all the time, and I am physically incapable of talking on the phone without freezing up to anyone but my grandma and my mom, my mom has to do all the phone stuff for me because I have panic attacks over making phone calls.
(He's so anxious about the call, just look at him freaking out...he's seriously just like me, I freeze up on the phone too.)
When he has to recite his haiku in front of everyone, he also freezes up and takes several deep breaths before reading it as quickly as possible and then saying that haiku is a WRITTEN art form, and that it shouldn't have to be read out loud, before putting his headphones back on and sitting down, clearly embarrassed...and that's only two situations where he gets anxious. Also, when he's nervous/embarrassed, his WHOLE BODY turns tomato red.

Speaking of haiku, Cherry writes haiku in order to better express himself, and it seems to be his special interest, as he is knowledgeable of haiku poets and their work, and lights up when he talks about it in a scene where Mr. Fujiyama recites random haiku to kinda quiz Cherry...? At least, that's how I interpreted that scene, and Cherry was correct in his answers. He keeps a haiku dictionary in his phone case, which makes it look like a brick in comparison to everyone else's, and the dictionary belonged to his dad originally, but, because his dad supports Cherry's love for haiku, he gave it to him. His mom also supports his haiku writing, and even likes all the haiku he posts online, much to his embarrassment. He also uses it to confess to Smile at the end of the movie, while still being incredibly anxious and his whole body still being that same tomato red color, it is a very sweet scene and for me personally, it was cuteness overload. He confessed to her in a very socially awkward way, using his special interest of haiku to recite some he made about her, and I know some people might find it a bit cringe, I thought it was adorable watching him struggle initially, but eventually build up the courage to express his love in the only way he knew how. I relate to this as I have always been much better at expressing myself and communicating through creative writing than actually speaking, I use creative writing to process basically anything...from things that happen in life to my own complicated emotions (I have alexithymia, which is sometimes referred to as emotional blindness, meaning 99% of the time, I have no idea how I'm feeling about anything, and this also extends to not knowing how other people are feeling as well...this is why I watch anime, because the expressions are much easier to read due to the much more expressive character design, particularly the eyes). Creative writing can help me figure out the emotions I'm trying to process, as well as just help me get my point across in a much clearer and easy to understand way...just like how writing haiku helps Cherry understand his feelings and express himself better.
(Look at him, he's trying his best and it's honestly adorable in my opinion.)
We see Cherry grow closer to Smile over the course of the movie, and I personally knew he was comfortable around her when he was finally able to take off his headphones when around her, because I'm very much the same way. If I take off my headphones around someone, it's a sign of trust, security, and affection, and it seems to be the same for Cherry. One day while walking with Smile, she points out that he's not wearing his headphones, and he replies that he doesn't need them anymore. I thought this was adorable and a good way to show that Cherry feels comfortable around Smile.
Throughout the movie he tries to tell her that he's moving away, but is either unable to bring himself to tell her or gets interrupted by someone or something else. Eventually, Smile finds out anyway and is very upset since she wanted to see the fireworks at the festival together with Cherry. Cherry obviously is DISTRAUGHT when Smile sadly continues the walk back home alone with only a "Take care", and as she walks away he tries to reach out one more time, but can't speak anymore and the world gets louder and louder until Cherry finally puts his headphones back on to make it all stop. He holds his hands over his headphones as he sinks to his knees right there where he's standing and completely breaks down shaking and crying...it's like he's having an implosive meltdown...and as someone who has both explosive and implosive meltdowns myself, I can definitely say that my implosive ones do at times resemble Cherry's breakdown in the movie, as I will also hold my hands over my headphones and put more pressure on them, and/or curl into myself or go completely into the fetal position and cry.
(He's trying to reach out, but can't and he's clearly frustrated with himself...)
(And here comes the breakdown...poor Cherry 🥺)
This scene broke me...hearing everything get louder and louder until Cherry put his headphones on and it all went quiet, and then hearing nothing but his cries for the rest of the scene with the volume increasing as it went on...yeah...I felt that to the core...the sensory experiences with the sound design in the movie really made me feel what Cherry was feeling, and it was so relatable too.
I think that's enough now, I've gone on long enough as it is, and even though I jumped around through the movie scenes in this post, I hope you can still understand it okay. This is my first attempt at a headcanon-supportive character analysis (and actually a character analysis in general), so I hope I did alright. I just wanted to express my love for my new comfort character, Cherry, because he's adorable and relatable and I love characters like that. Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop can be found on Netflix. Personally, I think it's really underrated and it's a very sweet slice-of-life movie about two insecure teens and how they spend their summer together. There's nothing TOO heavy in it and I like the characters, the animation, and the color palette is very interesting and fun. All in all, it's an easy one for me to watch, and having a comfort character in it in the form of Cherry just adds to its appeal for me.
I hope you don't mind how different this post is from my usual Pokemon-related stuff, but I just had to make this because I relate to Cherry so, SO much. I'll be back with more Pokemon stuff next time though, so don't worry 😅

Ahh also as an addendum to my previous ask about the age swap (which I might’ve accidentally labeled as the body swap fic due to the foibles of being awake unexpectedly early ), I was curious what your criticisms are regarding Robin and Will’s treatments by the Duffers? I know you’ve alluded to being bothered by both but I’d be curious to hear more ( if you have the time/hankering!)
Hooboy. Okay. Buckle in.
Obviously this is going to be a combination of actual literary analysis and Big Feelings That I Have, so like, please don’t take this as any kind of moral dictum on what to or not to watch, or how to or how not to interpret what you watch. Also, a lot of what makes me uneasy and unhappy about how canon deliberately handles queerness (as opposed to when it does queer things apparently by accident, which as you may have noticed, I have considerable amounts of fun with) has to do with behind-the-scenes context I’ve read about, so there’s a certain degree of Telephone involved. And��I’m still only halfway through season four. There’s just so fucking much of it.
With all that said.
The behind-the-scenes context I’m most specifically concerned with are the season-one pitch bible(? I think that’s what it’s called) (which, it should be noted, ended up diverging in some quite significant ways from what ended up in the show) where the Duffers first raised the possibility that Will might be gay, and the anecdote that Joe Keery and Maya Hawke were the ones who decided Robin should be queer and had to really push for it and wrote and choreographed that scene in the bathroom. Put the two together, and it tells you that the Duffers planned that there would be One (potentially) Gay Character in their show.
And that character was the one they spent an entire season directing violent, vicious, eventually outright murderous homophobic hatred at through the mouthpiece of a couple of bullies. You can say what you want about revenge narratives and those characters ultimately getting their comeuppance, but for Me Personally, it sucks all the fun and escapism out of season one to watch it thinking that those bullies only got punished when they aimed that vitriol at someone to whom it didn’t literally apply. Also I still have to sit through however many episodes of that vicious homophobia onscreen regardless, so, like, that’s a walk in the park anyway. /sarcasm
And then there’s that whole bad business in season three, where it’s never been quite clear to me if we’re supposed to see Mike as having been in any way in the wrong. Kind of scuppers the argument, to me, that we’re supposed to be on Will’s side. And season four, which so far has had Will tagging along after people who are supposed to be his best friends but mostly don’t seem to give a single damn about him, doing absolutely nothing but looking morose and sullen and tragic and *coughcough* Artistic, and causing Problems for the nice straight couple.
(Tangential to the point I’m coming to, but also, my son deserves better than to be reduced to a soggy cardboard standee with ‘GAY’ scrawled across it in magic marker the way season four seems to be angling toward. All the Byers, but especially the Byers boys, deserve better than season four seems interested in giving them. But I digress.)
Also. I love Robin. If you follow me, you probably know that. I’m a hardcore, ride-or-die Robin girl. But. With Robin, from what I’ve heard of the context, the Duffers never intended for her to be queer. They wrote a girl who was smart and funny and sharp and talented and a little bit mean and a little bit insecure and a little bit weird but in an interesting, endearing way - as a love interest for Steve.
And then, as soon as season four rolled around, once they’d been pushed into making her canonically, on-screen queer (in a beautiful, tender, heartfelt, true-feeling scene that they didn’t fucking write), suddenly she’s had a complete personality transplant. Suddenly, she’s an awkward, bumbling, annoying loser who’s only funny when she’s the butt of the joke, who’s no good at anything and who nobody really likes except maybe for Steve, an outcast even amongst the freaks. When she does do something smart or competent, everyone around her reacts with shock, like it’s wildly out of character instead of how her character was originally written. One of these versions of Robin was written with ‘gay person’ in mind, and it unfortunately wasn’t the one we were obviously supposed to like.
In both cases, I get the feeling that the storytelling issues stem from this like...assumption that queerness equals isolation and misery and tragedy, and that there’s nothing to queerness outside of that. That there’s something inherent to queerness, something pitiable but repulsive, that causes the isolation and misery and tragedy (not that those things are imposed from outside, by, say, violent homophobia). That it would be absurd to imagine that queerness could ever be joyful, or playful, or that someone might ever, given the chance to choose, not choose to be straight instead. Or that there could be enormous friendship and community and heart and pride in queerness, or even that queer people might find friendship and community and strength in each other. Or even fucking talk to each other, ever.
Which is especially infuriating, because the whole central theme of season one (besides surface appearances being deceiving) is that community and care between people who are very different but discover they have more in common than there is that separates them is what saves the day! That love comes in all kinds of forms, and they’re all important, and that love can be stronger than fear!
But apparently, according to the Duffers, queer love doesn’t count and queer community doesn’t exist. It’s just isolation, misery, and tragedy, and I guess we the watchers are supposed to sit outside of it and pity Them for it (and be quietly, sneakily, a little bit nastily grateful that it’s not happening to Us). Because of course nobody watching the show is queer. Of course. This show is made for normal people.
It’s part of the same attitude I’ve also seen play out with the Duffers’ inability to just let a white dude be bad. Oh, they want to talk a big game about how they’re on the side of the freaks, and bullies are bad, and everybody should be respected and appreciated for who they are. But when it cuts down to the bone, when applying that precept to a girl or a person of colour or a queer person makes a straight white guy come off as a monster, they keep trying to dodge it.
The more antagonists they try desperately to rehab without ever acknowledging why they were antagonists in the first place, the more it starts to look like they simply don’t really believe that the people those antagonists hurt really matter. That, somewhere deep down where the assumptions that are so baked in you don’t even realise they’re assumptions live, they don’t really believe that girls, or Black kids, or queer people are as fundamentally human and deserving of respect and compassion as their beloved awful straight white men are. That what they really think about bullies is that bullies are bad because the bullies picked on them, instead of the kinds of people who deserved it.
(See also: that time a twelve- or thirteen-year-old Sadie Sink didn’t want to have to do a kiss in the Snow Ball scene, so the Duffers, who had just been joking about having her do it, actually made her do it. For multiple takes. Specifically because she didn’t want to. And then later related that anecdote to the press. Because they thought it was funny.)
Anyway. Personally, I’d prefer canon just never say anything definitive on the matter of Will’s sexuality and stop trying to push the narrative in that direction, so I don’t have to watch the Duffers spectacularly fumble yet another attempt at Writing About Marginalised Groups.
(Also, this is absolutely not me saying Watch A Different Show - I’m here writing fanfic for this stupid show, it’d be pretty fucking rich of me to try to tell people to stop watching it. But I’d really love for many of its fans to get some more exposure to less-mainstream, more deliberately queer literature and film, so y’all can see what it really feels like to be seen and acknowledged and loved by a story, on purpose. I get it! I do! I too have wanted very badly to feel like something I loved, loved me back.
But you don’t have to content yourselves with scraps. And you definitely don’t have to be so concerned with those scraps that you blame your friends, cousins, siblings, brothers in arms for ‘stealing’ some kind of ‘representation’ from you by asking to be seen and acknowledged and loved as well. The bastards who’ve been withholding that recognition from all of us would love nothing more than to watch with amusement, gorging themselves on a banquet, while we tear each other apart over a couple of discarded bones. Don’t give them the satisfaction. We don’t have to be isolated, pitiable, pathetic, miserable tragedies. Put the hollow promises of exclusionism and respectability down. There is queer art and literature and film and community and joy and love in abundance that you don’t have to beg anyone for, and you are invited to participate. This is me inviting you to participate.

Hey there! So I want to start writing some fics for bart and I want to make sure they are as accurate as possible and he's kinda the main point of your blog so I was wondering if you could give me like a rundown of his character, how he behaves, what his trauma is like stuff like that. If it's to long to post let me know and I'll message you privately
hey :) that’s exciting, looking forward to reading them 🤩 honestly i could give u a run down but i do think a lot of things i feel strongly about r largely personal interpretations of his character from what we’ve seen + extra trivia, especially on things like trauma. Ill edit later to link u to some think pieces/previous asks where i fleshed out some specifics about his characterisation/background cause honestly to fully answer this question id probably end up writing the equivalent of a fic 😭 lol but the thing is, even if i don’t entirely agree with others views on the matters, other approaches/perspectives on him can lead to really interesting plot/character exploration/stories that id still love to read about! so whilst i might have a general outline on his characterisation, i think it’s also important to go along with what u personally interpret/feel. Also it depends whether ur specifically asking about his yj tv or comics iteration? Though honestly, the core aspects of my answers to both would be pretty similar. But i’ll answer in terms of YJ as that’s very much the point of my blog like u mentioned lol
i think what might also be worth mentioning are traps that some writers (including myself) can fall into that r worth avoiding and why:
- adhd/speed is his full personality
like yes he can be excitable/hyper with his head in the clouds and yes he can be cute about it, but that’s not his only personality trait, he can be serious about things, cocky/bit of an asshole, but also sweet and sincere/speak his mind, but also dubious. He’s multifaceted/complex that way (layered just like anyone can be tbh). It all depends on the situation and seeing how he acts in the series it a good call to see how it can be mirrored/further portrayed in other situations.
- he’s a character that needs babysitting
again yes, it’s common that a lot of his friendships/relationships have a tolerance type of aspect to it, but people he’s at the very least good friends with genuinely like him and have a dynamic that’s on equal footing, some authors can accidentally infantilise him too much which is just not the way to go with him.
- he’s so traumatised that he needs therapy asap
this isn’t to say life is a breeze for him or that he doesn’t/can’t have deep issues. I mean he literally comes from a post-apocalyptic society, that’s pretty troubling. It has lead to traits like how he’s notably desensitised to things like death, has sticky fingers (tendency to steal), doesn’t really have any problem with lying nor confrontation. But from what we have seen he seems to be incredibly adaptable to situations as well as very happy/comfortable in his current time. And i really don’t think the answer to why he can live a comfortable life in the present is because he’s had therapy. I don’t think he’s visibly stuck on any particular trauma (not that he doesn’t have any, they just don’t weigh him down as much as it could) and that as a result of his background, he has a much higher than average threshold for what it takes to get him to break down. I think just because he’s not caught up on what could be personal traumas, doesn’t mean it doesn’t come without it’s issues. Being desensitised to that extent can come with its own problems and i think he has a different set of values than the average person on the team. I think an interesting approach to this is that his “issues” would come about in unexpected/uncomfortable ways/circumstances that can affect his normal relationships like with his family (jay/barry particularly).
- he has complexes about his intelligence/capability/being a hero
personally, i really don’t think this is/should be a trait of his. He IS intelligent/capable and a hero point blank period. Just because he might have an unconventional way of doing/seeing things, doesn’t mean it brings these things into question, atleast, in terms of how HE views himself. Doesn’t mean others won’t have their issues with it for whatever reason, but generally he’s a pretty confident guy to the point of being cocky. Not in the sense that he’s a total dick about it, but because he knows he’s that good and is proud of it. Now this is an interesting trait because i think it actually plays quite nicely with his airheaded/strange moments. I don’t think he fakes them necessarily, maybe plays it up but only because he’s having fun and LIKES having fun too, as well as because he doesn’t want to advertise certain things because of whatever agenda he may have.
a lot of this is a mix of what i consider instrinsic to his characterisation but also personal interpretations. Just because i think he can be cocky, doesn’t mean i don’t think he doesn’t have any insecurities. If anything reading a fic about it would be so interesting (and there have been many that have dealt with it amazingly). All these traits/views don’t exist in binary and can be nicely complimented with other takes/interpretations of them. As long as ur passionate about the story and his character, i think ultimately u can write a really cool story which id be so excited to read. Even if he’s just going clothes shopping and nothing would arise to all that i’ve mentioned, it would still be fun to read. It’s ultimately all just fun :)
Everything i described, can sound a bit confusing, so i’m sorry about that lol. I hope the asks I will link will help too! I think checking out his TV tropes section (Kid Flash II) is also useful, it gives a pretty good rundown on a fair amount of his traits.
here’s also a part of another section that i really like too lol
in terms of general facts, these might also help:
- he’s gay.
- he does go to school (he was enrolled pretty soon after his arrival to the present) .
- he has brown hair (i’m sorry but whenever i read he has red hair i literally frown LOL).
- he is the son of meloni thawne (this one is more his general comic lore but everyone pretty much takes it as canon so, since we are on this topic he has a half brother owen mercer (son of captain boomerang) and his cousin is Jenni (daughter of Dawn)).
- he doesn’t know every single thing that happens to every hero/person in the future, especially since the timeline has completely changed from his original one. What he does know, is subject to debate and it’s always interesting to see what direction different authors take it. What i believe has direct confirmation from greg as well as was suggested in the series is that he for example didn’t know artemis was undercover and that kaldur was a double agent. This could suggest literally anything (they died during that time/they die much later down the line/ they survived but alliances became vague under the mutual threat of a world apocalypse etc)
- he doesn’t want to return to his “original time” it kind of goes without saying but it’s been made pretty clear in the series. He feels relatively at home in the present. Doesn’t necessarily mean he doesn’t miss some things/people from his past though.
- whilst he is pretty lax about having a secret identity, he still has one. Jay doesn’t have one and is a public hero. Do with that what u will lol
- this one is only “suggested” based on the fact that no one saw him off when he left to the present. It’s suggested that his parents are dead.

While scrolling through the forums, he stumbled upon a very interesting one...

That's such an odd claim, and yet, Aira couldn't help but wonder if that were true. Could someone so cool truly have such an adorable weakness? The thought alone made Aira squeal like a school girl, thank god his rommates were out for today.

"I'm sorry, did I hurt you?" Aira looked concerned until he noticed a faint blush forming across Koga's cheeks.
"I-It's nothing. Forget about it" he tried to play it off cool, but Aira's couldn't live with himself if he accidentally hurt one of his favorite idols. He tried to make it up to him by rubbing where he had grabbed, making Koga's breath hitch.
Suddenly, Aira gasped in realization "Could it be...?!". Without thinking, he grabbed at Koga's side and gave it a pinch, causing the older one to yelp at the ticklish feeling. "Oh my god... You're actually ticklish!~" Aira squealed like a schoolgirl as Koga's cheeks started to darken at the sudden outburst. "Please don't kill me for what I'm about to do!".

It was quite the uncharacteristic look, and Aira couldn't get enough of it. Even though it felt torturous to poor 'ol Koga, the kid looked like he was having too much fun with this new discovery, and maybe it wasn't so bad as he made it out to be... not like he would ever admit it though.
Koga kept laughing his pretty 'lil head off, clutching his tummy to try to control himself. Aira was having so much fun he even started laughing alongside him, which just made him feel even more flustered.
Once he noticed Koga's laughter starting to get wheezy did Aira slow his fingers to a stop. "I-I'm so sorry! I don't know what came over me... Y-you just looked so cute laughing and smiling like that and-".
Before Aira could finish his rambling, Koga patted his shoulder with a soft, reassuring smile, making Aira feel less guilty for tormenting him with tickles.
The blonde helped him back up to his feet. Koga tried to seem serious, but the blush on his face made it hard. "Y-you better keep this a secret, okay?! If my unitmates were to find out, they'd never let me live it down...".
Before Aira could even respond, they heard a teasy voice from the distance "Too late~".
"S-Sakuma senpai?!" Aira exclaimed, both he and Koga blushing in shock, realizing that Rei had witnessed all of that. How embarrassing...
"I was walking back to the dorms as I noticed you're cutesy display of affection. Who knew the corgi could be so sensitive~" he teased as Koga let out an embarrassed grumble, shoving his hands into his pockets and walking away. Rei following behind to tease him further. Leaving a poor, embarrassed Aira to die in his shame... I'm kidding, he'll most likely tell his own unitmates about his amazing discovery. Who knows... maybe there are other idols with such an adorable weakness.

Hi!!! 7, 10, 17 for the writing ask game??
Hello!! I’m kinda sick so sorry if this is a little loopy sounding but I guess that’ll be part of the fun. Yippee!
7. Who is the OC that is most like you?
I have a couple OC’s that feel like me, but any character that’s been given the traits of selfishness, attention seeking, jealousy, and entitlement are halfway to being me. - Kinda cheating but my sona, GhooseBerry (Fursona), and Otomachi Una are like this.
My sona is basically just me except a worse person. If any of my stories needs an antagonist to just be disliked or evil then pop the weasel there goes my sona into the story. Does my story need someone to be homophobic? A toxic boyfriend/girlfriend? Need someone to accidentally/intentionally trigger a mental breakdown? I have the perfect character for me.
GhooseBerry has the same traits except they’re lazy and have a tendency to put their work onto their closest friends while profiting off all of their adventures. They never intentionally want to hurt people but if that's the way things turn out… Then oh well.
Una isn’t my character but I’ve projected onto her so much she’s become me with extra steps. It started with me wanting to wear all of her outfits, then the song Beast Dance and Hate it, Hate it, happened and I realized those interpretations of her are just like me fr. My version of her is more judgmental than I am but I love her still <3333
10. In which of your stories would you like to live?
None of my worlds are particularly good. If I had to choose though I think I would pick the world GhooseBerry lives in. Ghooseberry lives in a world where characters all work in show business. Part of that is that the actors' backstories are evaluated for their work. An actor’s backstory can’t be too boring, or too intense for the viewers.
If I was in this world I would want to be an actor. I love acting irl. (and anything but being an actor is looked down upon in this world) The issue would come from my backstory. When I was young I dealt with issues that aren’t really touched upon in media. And the few examples I can think of villainize the issues I struggled with. It’s likely that I would get a lot of rejections for being unsuitable or casted and not portrayed in the best light. I don’t mind being a villain, but that would take a toll on my mental health. But despite its issues I would pick this world because I love acting, and the culture breeds people to become “interesting” which would be cool to analyze.
17. Tell us a fun fact about your current WIP.
For context my current fic is about Korekiyo dealing with psychosomatic (Symptoms caused by the brain, mostly due to stress) symptoms and Gonta helps him through it.
The brand of symptoms Kiyo is going through is a touch starved fever. Essentially Kiyo is touch starved and he’s getting fever symptoms because he hasn’t been hugged enough.
I got the idea from something that happened to me during the height of covid. I was trying to go to bed when all of a sudden, my brain was going “you haven’t been hugged enough”. And in an instant, I was burning hot, delirious, and crying my eyes out because I haven’t had contact with people in who knows how long. It was so bad hugging a plushie felt like how it does to hold a person. Thankfully it only lasted a couple hours, but when it was over, I thought the concept would make a good fic, so I’m finally making it.
Also, one of my beta’s called my fic the “most sexual non sex scene” so huh.

I went and read the monologue you mentioned. Genuinely love the writing there. Honestly it's low-key so c!dream coded, with the stuff he was saying to Tommy in the prison
And do not worry, Dream is such a fun villain and it's gonna be fun seeing different interpretations of him. I'm gonna be honest I never really analyzed him much just cause I was way more focused on tommy and Wilbur. (I have some hot takes on him that will anger the masses kekw)
I wish so hard that dream has built his character up a little earlier cause like man is he interesting. Especially the way they used the very beginnings of the smp, at a time before cannon was even a thought in the wind to show more of an evolution than we really thought
And ok, I'm actually in love with so many of the monologues they said during the SMP. Wilbur by far and away having my favorites during the pogtopia era. But Dream's during the disc finale. It hit me in all the right ways. Like, he nailed the tone and the inflections and the way he was so cocky and like djdjsnwn.
And also that's one where I love to bring in the meta

So many fan interpretations were canonized there. Tommy's power and how his attachments dictated the tides of the server, dreams obsession with control and so many other things. As a fan who had been more than knee deep into the lore at the time, hearing it was amazing because it felt like dream was acknowledging us and actively encouraging us
And not to bash them because I love all the cc's so much. But aside from a few of them, they weren't really storytellers. I could go into the meta of mcyt and how they as a generation influenced the next wave of mcyt but the current wave of mcyt does what they lacked and that is making epics out of nothing (and yes there's a new gen of mcyt don't open that can of worms unless you're feeling brave)
The dsmp people had a few captains and definitely a lot of creativity but in the best way possible it was a give and take relationship where the creators would do something random and the fans would then build on it and then the cc's would see that and smoothly incorporate that.
And I'm not saying we wrote the characters, cause we didn't. But they did these broad strokes and we helped them fill in the finer details. That's just how improv works, a team effort from everyone involved.
So much of the smp was accidental and I don't think they thought of the lore the same we we did and I have no doubt that that monologue is the manifestation of that
(also yes, when there was no more lore I went down the path of then choosing to analyze the fandom itself and oh man oh man. Sorry I am like, 8 levels of insane for block men and block game)

YES this is something i clearly remember, that wink to the audience in a way that said — we see what you're doing, we like it, keep going, and that translated into so many iconic moments; i guess that's like the main consequence of being so closely interwined with their fandom (idk i think it was a bit of a interesting decision in general terms and i don't know if i liked how it ended up making some people feel like entilted to an ending they wanted, you know? it's a complex issue. it was cool and then it wasn't).
and yeah i get you, mcyt has been a fascination of mine for a while, kinda the reason i'm studing anthropology! digital anthropology offers many windows in this age where older academia/just normal older folks don't know how to navigate the internet and their subcategories, not the way content creators are forced to learn. it's p interesting!!

(was already serious but still suddenly gets even more serious) i get it. i KNOW people are not consciously thinking "we must protect the fictional white female character's purity from the scary foreign man!!!" but it is curious to examine how it produces something that is indistinguishable from that, and what that means. more than that though, what i find interesting is what this is actually born from most of the time, which is that Shuro poses a "threat" to Farcille in the minds of fans lol
(it's also at least partially born of Shuro being cruel to Laios after the Faligon incident and i've actually sort of made a post about that already if you're curious. today this is a surprise Farcille post.)
as a big fan of the series who started reading seriously since around Volume 7 of 14 and as a bigtime Farcille fan, i have so many thoughts about how people approach the ship that i know i will inevitably need to put them all in their own entire seperate post. it's gonna happen!!! for now i will just say, i don't "agree" with how a lot of shippers approach it, and yet i have to emphasize, i can't fault a lot of them, because of how the full "scope" of Dungeon Meshi is, to be honest, hard for the average reader to grasp because of the sheer amount of supplementary material there is (a lot of it not readily avilable in any language other than Japanese!). i GET that. so i try to keep that in mind when i disagree with other fans
that said, when people start outright ignoring basic facts of what is presented to them, and, i must reiterate, accidentally (?) reacting in super racist ways, i feel like i gotta say something lol
Shuro isn't a "threat" to Marcille and Falin's relationship. putting aside the way the series aproaches "textual" romance (that's an entirely different post lol), he is not a threat to their friendship or bond or anything. like... i don't even know what screenshots i could possibly post as "proof." like, just read the series? watch the anime? lol?
the question becomes: why do fans interpret Shuro as a threat to Marcille and Falin's relationship? the answer is, well, because he's a man and he's in love with Falin lol. i get it. trust me, i GET it. i'm sure we've all loved a relationship in some series that so totally should have become canon, only for one party to randomly be placed in a heterosexual relationship that felt like it came out of nowhere. it happens. but... it doesn't happen in Dungeon Meshi. so why treat it like it does?
if anything, doesn't acting like that's what's happening in Dungeon Meshi do a disservice to Ryoko Kui's wonderful, unique relationship writing? hell, doesn't acting like that's what's happening do a disservice to the ship you love? lol? Marcille and Falin have such an interesting and engaging relationship, and i feel like the way some fans treat Shuro is basically saying "the prescence of this random guy would ruin this" which is not only not true, it... is basically saying the relationship is super flimsy lol. it's basically an insult. i'm sure that's not what most people are thinking, but like... well, think about it! have some confidence in your ship!
i think, in the advent of ship dynamic memes and those graphics made to promote romance books where they just put a picture of the cover and list all the popular tropes, there's this temptation to "puzzle" out all the tropes and stuff in the things you like, be it entire series, characters, or, yes, ships. and i get that it can be fun, but i really think sometimes that way of thinking causes people to vastly oversimplify or even completely misrepresent good and interesting writing in the name of filling out a checklist no one was asking you to fill out in the first place
that's all to say, unironically, i think a lot of Farcille fans misrepresent Shuro in this way because they're unconsciously trying to make Farcille a "yuri where one girl is saved from a shitty man by the other girl" narrative when it isn't that at all lol. it's a story about childhood friends becoming lovers, but it's also a story where one of them doesn't realize how comically down bad she is for the other because she hasn't realized there's endings besides being swept away by a prince on a white horse yet. but it's ALSO a story about that same comically oblivious one committing the ultimate taboo to save the other, yet it's ALSO a story about the other admitting she, too, would make an enemy of the world to save her, the one who saved her first without realizing it
isn't that already fantastic? why does it need to be made into something else?
remember when Shuro proposed to Falin and, though it was strangely sudden, gave her time to respond without pressuring her and spoilers but remember when he did not broach the topic until literally after the series ended and remember when Falin gently rejected his proposal because she respects him and remember when he gracefully accepted her rejection because he respects her and remember how Falin still promised to visit him in his homeland because. she respects him. and they're friends. and remember how the Dungeon Meshi fandom's overwhelming reaction was to treat Shuro like he was a drooling Neanderthal who was attempting to kidnap Falin and bring her back to his cave to force her to be a 50s housewife

I had a prompt in mind: what are the gang members like when they get reaaaaly drunk? Who gets sad & sentimental, who gets all funny and jokey, who is all sleepy, and etc etc etc?
now this is an interesting one hehe
Arthur
When Arthur's drunk, he does his absolute best to try to convince everyone he isn't that drunk. He tries to walk in a straight line to prove he’s ok but accidentally walks into Uncle.
He somehow has great hearing and joins in on every sing song within a five mile radius. Arthur could be talking to you on the outskirts of camp but if he hears someone singing by the campfire, he joins in immediately.
He gets into a very jolly mood when he's drunk and talks about anything and everything. He rambles on about so much he interrupts himself a lot.
If he's sweet on you then Arthur asks to hold your hand and he won’t stop holding your hand for the e n t i r e night. No matter where you go or what you do, Arthur will potter after you with his hand still holding yours. And whenever you look at him, Arthur has a big, proud smile on his face as he looks at your hand in his.
Charles
Who is this man? Where tf did Charles go? He acts very differently than sober Charles. Whatever idea springs to mind, he wants to do it. If he wants to do interpretive dance in the middle of camp then that's exactly what he does or if he decides to go skinny dipping at 4am then off he goes, trying to find a lake or a river.
One second Charles could be laughing so much he's nearly crying, a second later he could start sobbing because he remembered that time he accidentally shot a lawman's horse when he was trying to aim for the guy. Please hug him.
It doesn't matter how drunk Charles is, he can still yeet anyone over Mount Hagen and he can go from fun and goofy to deathly intimidating in under 1.5 seconds.
And if you and Charles are dating then he just wants to kiss you. He kisses your temple all the way down to your jawline before kissing back up to your ear.
Dutch
Dutch gets quiet when he's drunk. He just kinda sits there and stares off in a daze for ten minutes. When someone talks to him, it's like he buffers for a few seconds before responding.
But when he starts talking, good luck trying to get Dutch to shut up. And this man needs everyone to stop what they're doing and give him all of their attention when he decides to say a speech. And if one person stops paying attention then Dutch storms off.
Dutch really does believe he's unstoppable when he's drunk. And if you don't believe him then don't worry, Dutch has no problem spending three hours explaining how all of his plans are apparently bulletproof.
If Dutch is sweet on you then he tries to flirt with you. But the more he drinks, the harder it gets for him to string a sentence together. "Your eyes..." he slurs his words but tries to stay composed "they remind me... of uh... eyes".
Micah
Micah is so goddamn laid back when he's drunk. Strangely people tend to get on with Micah when he's drunk but by the time he's sober again he's gone back to being... well, Micah.
He's nice ? Which is so bizarre but he actually makes an effort to talk to people without antagonising them and instead of taking offence to comments, he laughs them off and sees it as a joke.
As long as the conversation stays light, Micah keeps his happy demeanour and he isn't even a bad loser when it comes to poker and five finger fillet. In a way, seeing Micah so friendly unnerves some of the other gang members because of how baffling it is.
If he's sweet on you then Micah will continuously asks if you'd like to sit on his lap. Of course he flirts with you but he's a lot sweeter than normal and tells you that you could definitely do better than him so he understands if you reject him.
John
John comes out of his shell when he's drunk. Instead of keeping his mouth shut, he says whatever he thinks of. Yeah he gets into more fights cause he doesn't know when to stop talking.
He can fall asleep anywhere and at any time. You could be chatting with him by the campfire and slowly feel him lean against your shoulder as he starts to softly snore. He once fell asleep while standing up right with one of his hands on a barrel for support.
When John tries to go to sleep when he's drunk, he's like a kid trying to go to sleep at a sleepover. John loudly says the most random words and makes random noises before he bursts out laughing, thinking it's the funniest thing in the world.
If John has a crush on you and he's drunk, he tries to be so helpful. He constantly asks you if you need anything. If you ask him to get you something then he walks a few feet away before completely forgetting what you asked for.
Bill
Let's be real, Bill's already a hothead when he's sober and he's exactly the same when he's drunk. He's very fast to start a fight but if someone lands one punch then that's Bill done for the night. Usually he's a better fighter but he has terrible balance when he's been drinking.
He tries to be productive when he's drunk, thinking that now's the perfect time to do some chores and to go on guard duty. Everyone knows better than to leave Bill go out on watch when he's like this. One time he tried to shoot a squirrel cause he thought it was going to run into camp.
Bill rambles a lot too, mainly telling stories from when he was in the army or reminiscing about different robberies he's done with the gang.
Bill can get really anxious so if y'all are in a relationship, he needs your comfort. His mind starts racing and he worries about little things so for you to be there and tell him everything is alright truly means a lot to him.
Javier
Javier gets very goofy when he's drunk. He's keeps things light hearted, joking about things but is still able to hold his tongue when needed and have proper conversations too.
Honestly, Javier is probably one of the most level headed people in comparison to the rest of the gang but because he tends to stumble and get his words mixed up, people presume he's completely wasted when he's had a few to drink.
This man LIVES for those 2am deep and meaningful conversations. He absolutely adores having them and being drunk helps him open up more about his feelings so he has no problem expressing his emotions.
Are you ready to be swept off of your feet, both metaphorically and maybe literally depending on if you'll leave Javier do that? He's such a hopeless romantic when he's drunk. If camp is near a field or woodland then he sneaks off, picks some flowers and shyly gives them to you.
Sean
Sean manages to go through every mood when he's drunk. Everything is funny to him and he tries to make jokes about whatever comes to mind. Usually he jokes about Bill and Micah which leads to one of them arguing with Sean.
That's when Sean gets angry and thinks he's able to knock out anyone with one punch. Normally he ends up accidentally walking into a table or tripping over himself cause of how focused he is at punching the air.
Then Sean gets all sad and sentimental, feeling sorry for himself cause he accidentally bruised his leg. He has no problem sitting on the ground and pouting for a while, hoping that someone will walk past and give him some attention for a while.
If y'all are dating then Sean will tell you over and over again how much you mean to him and how much he loves you. He just wants to cling on to you for the night and make sure you know how loved you are.
Hosea
I hope you're sitting comfortably cause Hosea's gonna tell you every single goddamn story he can think of. Hosea tells you funny stories, sad stories, how he first met John and how he conned rich people. He really likes to reminisce when he's drunk.
Towards the end of the night, Hosea eventually gets quiet and if there's a party at camp where everyone is celebrating, then he goes off by the outskirts for a while.
Hosea likes to sit back and watch as everyone enjoys the night. He can get very sentimental when he does this but he likes to enjoy the little moments of the night and savour it all.
If he’s sweet on you then Hosea makes sure you know how special you are and that you deserve the best. He doesn't necessarily flirt with you but instead wants you to know how great you are.
Sadie
When Sadie drinks, she gets sad. She doesn't mean to get sad but her mind wanders and she thinks a lot about everything that's happened in her life and how she's ended up where she is today.
She doesn't speak a lot and ends up getting stuck in her head with thoughts whirling around and around. It can get overwhelming which is why she isn't that keen on getting completely wasted on alcohol.
She doesn't like how crowded camp can get so instead she likes to go off and find a nice scenic area to rest. Normally that helps calm her mind but Sadie also gets sleepy by then too.
If Sadie likes you and feels comfortable around you then she leans against you as ye both sit there in a peaceful silence. And if you suggest it, then she'll hesitantly rest her head on your lap and fall asleep as you play with her hair.
Kieran
Kieran doesn't get drunk often. He hates waking up the next morning and wondering if he pissed anyone off or said something he shouldn't have.
He's very happy when he's drunk, only seeing the positives in things and always smiling. Kieran is still a little shy but he's more open to being involved with what the gang's doing, whether that be singing along to some songs or dancing with whoever to Dutch's gramophone.
Because of how involved he can become with the gang when he's drunk, he can get involved in a few fights or arguments. But contrary to popular belief, Kieran doesn't back down and makes sure to get his points across.
Kieran gets more confident after a few drinks and flirts with you more than usual. The more accepting you are to his comments, the more he flirts with you. Though if you flirt back then he gets very flustered.

Ok I'm gonna try my best to not sound like a fuckin moron. (Because I feel like acting like I'm that guy)
To begin in reverse order. I like rwby. Mainly due to fact it inspired my work. People can dislike how a show is handled but still enjoy the series.
Thats just a fact. (I know this is a bit of topic so very sorry about that) But that doesn't stop me from appreciating things. For instance weapon design and the fight choreography. While unfortunately after Monty passed the fights did go down in quality that doesn't inherently mean their completely shit. I can also still appreciate the music.
I dislike how rwby was handled but if I hated it I'd probably just shit on it endlessly (again apologies this is heavily off topic I just wanna make anyone who sees this can atleast get a grasp on my bullshit)
Whether or not Rwby does have a potential buyer doesn't really matter, it got screwed over by Rooster teeth. And honestly I hope it does have a buyer, I hope it gets a good writing staff because the series deserves better. (I apologize if I came off as hostile about that fact)
I excluded jaune because one he's a member of the main cast and two he's supprisingly in offensive (plus he's also your second favorite character) SHUT THE FUCK UP! SHIT LIKE THAT GONNA MAKE ME LOOK LIKE I GOT A BIAS.
For Ren it's both the fact he's a member of the main cast, he's even more inoffensive and (personally) because he's Nora's love interest. As for sun and Neptune? I got nothing I just excluded them because I actually like their bias to their characters (despite a minor bias against Neptune)
For Adam.. I don't know why but the idea that what was Adam is a fanon thing but I'm not digging into that can of worms because it's a headache and I refuse to argue over something that ends with no loser or winner, just bitterness. As for the fact of apparently deceiving the fandom? I consider that total bullshit because from what I can tell (emphasize on what I can discern) crwby just really fuckin hated him. But I got nothing for defending this mothafucker I'm just glad he's dead because that means he isn't becoming worse.
Ironwood is... Interesting. Id bring up his semblance (which I don't why I didn't. Would have been really good for the argument) but that now would sound like an excuse. So I'm just gonna bring up the fact this man was kept in the dark by team Rwby, was actively lied to and the moment things went to shut he broke and suddenly he's a dictator now. If anything I probably would have said that he was pinned against a wall and overcome with frustration just lost it. But for all I know I could have the whole "it's a fanon interpretation" thrown and I have already made it obvious I hate dealing with that.
As for the whole fact that rt can't write women? May I direct your eye to the actions of team Rwby.
Ahem.
Allied themselves with a criminal who has been shown stealing supplies.
Lied to a leader of a nation despite previously stating a few volumes back no more lies.
Completely acted as if ironwood couldn't be trust despite, 1. Giving them and their fellow huntsmen and huntresses in training the option of leaving. 2. Giving yang her prosthetic arm after Adam cut her old arm off. Defending Weiss after she accidentally caused a ruckus at a galla (in which is a action I actually agree, fuck the bitches who didn't give two shits about the lives lost. People like that can eat a boulder.) 3. Giving the team their licenses because he trusts them.
The entire fact of how they handled the truth Salem can't be killed, just proceeding to treat him like he committed the most heinous crimes imagine able (..that's a bit much ill probably come back with a better comparison). However that is ignoring the fact Ozpin has consistently put the people before stopping Salem, he treated the students of beacon not as foot soldiers but as people he also kept Salems immortality a secret because he cared for the people. If everyone knew about Salem and that she couldn't be killed, they wouldn't unite they most likely would just surrender.
Finally for my grocery list of points I have poorly explained, the allegory for suicide. ok before I begin I'm going to state the fact that while I do struggle with suicidal thoughts that does not inherently allow me to talk about this. I'm just giving my perspective, especially considering.. the obvious.
Rubys "death" didn't give any impact to the cast. No one really had a reaction that made sense for them. (I'm especially mad yang didn't go fuckin ballistic at jaune considering on paper it's primarily his fault because what he said pushed ruby over the edge.) Add that with the fact that some aspects of team Rwby were heavily out of character (ahem- YANG) Ruby's "death" didn't really mean anything.
The topic of Ruby commiting suicide should have been handled with a lot more care and not as a plot point that meant nothing (I'm actually hoping I can do atleast a little better with that topic during my rewrite)
One last thing. I am sorry the whole "crucify" thing sounded at you it was more directed at the toxic asshats that inhabit this fandom, the wasps, thorn, the RT glazers and just people who just to take a extreme when it comes to rwby.
Alright I hope I made sense and didn't sound like a baboons ass cheeks clapping.
I'm tired and don't feel like digging my own grave any deeper. Saving that for when I'm well known in the fandom.

Why does Indie Animation lend itself to such intense discourse?
If I had to speculate from my own observations (feel free to call me out on an overgeneralizations), it would be that the harsh turn against any given indie project would be akin to a mother scolding a child with, "I expected this from your sibling but you?!"
See also the "We were rooting for you" gif often tossed around.
Indie Animation be it from a small studio or crowdfunded is seen as bypassing the hoops and hurdles of getting your foot in the door of the highly corporatized entertainment industry. With the likes of Disney or Nick or any given streaming service, creator driven projects are subject to the whims of the company who holds the IP.
And those whims are often to said IP's detriment. It'll more often than not be willfully neglected at best or treated as just something to fill a time slot or shove onto a streaming platform as "content." Enough may be allowed to flourish but their either uncerimoniously cut short at best or being dragged out as a franchise at worst.
To keep from going on about the whole Legend of Korra vs. Spongebob thing (I was there people, there was an LoK fandom believe it or not), indie animation has often been seen as small scale but also within the creator's general control since they control how long it goes or how it's written.
Many cartoons like Gravity Falls, Owl House and Amphibia have talked about trying to get their vision across while contending with a lot of Standards and Practices. Their story which had a "kids and adults alike" target audience would have the top brass insist on something more just for the former category.
While they find work arounds, often to stick their tongue out at the FCC, this can be a hard reminder of who has the final say despite it being what you want. Indie animation is seen as an answer to "What if Alex Hirsch didn't have to comprimise elements of Gravity Falls for the FCC?" or "What if Dana Terrence could just blaze her own trail with The Owl House with little to no notes?"
Especially when it comes to animation with queer characters. Animation made to be "fit for kids" have it tough enough even today but adult animation has to "play it for laughs" since comedies have been the defacto standard for that type of cartoon.
However... a show being creator driven or creative team driven comes as a double edged sword for the fandoms they form. Not all stories that play out across multiple episodes of varying lengths are going in the direction YOU might want to.
Creators might tire of a certain direction or formula and mix things up with things that come to mind almost on the spot. Even with a solid plan, the status quo will get a shake up that can and will alienate those who fell in love from episode one.
Indie Pilots spark the imagination something fierce. There's theories as to what any little detail could mean going forward and speculation on what a character's arc could be. These go wild because Fandom is all about the hypothetical, the unknown, the what could've/should've/would've been. Whole phenomenon would be dead in the water otherwise.
Thing is that not all theories will be proven right if any at all. The creators aren't mind readers and even if it isn't a legality like in corporate, they don't read fanfics if only because they don't want their vision to be totally compromised. Any good creator knows not to just give fans what they want. However... trampling over all these fanfics and theories makes it feel like any given fan had their "child" dragged into the streets to be shot.
A harsh phrasing but that's how a lot of fans act when continuing episode bump up against initial impression of this character or that storyline. It was their creation but new lore, new backstory or what have you is liable to override them. It's been an occupational hazard of being a member of fandom for ages yet it's become the center of a lot of discourse now more than ever. Say thank you to social media for creating such a combative environment everybody.
It's this... feeling of ownership that has existed in fandoms of other shows owned by corporations but amplied by the smaller scale of it, how creators seem more... approachable. And THIS is how the YouTube "critic" scene comes in to capitalize.
So... yeah.
