The Red Tailed Black cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii) "Ngaoara or Karrak" In the language of the Noongar People. An amazing species of Cockatoo that have a truly beautiful colouring. While the males are solid black with a bright crimson tail, I believe the ladies take the cake on this one. These three gorgeous girls show off not only the starry sky pattern they carry but the fiery energy of their tails.

It is believed that they act as guardians to loved ones, bringing them to rest with the ancestors. Seeing a black cockatoo can also mean that rain is coming, further enforcing their identity as a symbol of change.

They are listed as Vulnerable at the moment due to habitat loss, rare nest hollows and invasive species.

Day Two of my 54th Win a Commission contest! Guess the fairy tale this story was based upon, win the commission! This contest will end on October 14th at 12:01 am EST.

Day One

Here the stepson has been transformed into a cockatoo after his stepmother killed and ate him, and is flying in front of his mother’s tree with the gifts he’s received for his sorrowful song.

In the original story, he is a songbird, but I set mine in Alice Springs, Australia and wanted to pick a distinctive bird from the area.

Once you stepped outside, you will be at the Australian Outback exhibit area. An Orange-Bellied Parrot preening itself on tree trunk looked up to let me fire this shot. While the Laughing Kookaburra flew pass overhead with a small mouse in its beak.

Two docile Red-Tailed Black Cockatoos perching on the hand railing, attracting a small group of visitors snapping away on their hand phones and cameras. A Common Emu roam freely in the grassy area below us.
