On this day, 23 June 1751, Gregoria Apaza Nina, Indigenous Aymara rebel leader, was born in Bolivia. She led a major Indigenous revolt, along side her brother, Julián Apaza Nina (Túpac Katari), and sister-in-law, Bartolina Sisa, against Spanish colonial rule in the country. She and Bartolina took over the leadership of the rebels following the capture and death of Túpac Katari in November 1781. BARTOLINA SISA // HEROINE
“She was an Aymaran woman and indigenous heroine who led numerous revolts against the Spanish rule in Charcas, then part of the Viceroyalty of Peru and present-day Bolivia. Alongside her husband, the indigenous leader Túpac Katari, she participated in the organisation of indigenous military camps that took part in the siege of La Paz. She was betrayed and turned in to the Spanish authorities, who later executed her.”

Bartolina Sisa
[Bartolina Sisa and her husband, Tupac Katari. Large gray statues]
Bartolina Sisa (1750-1782) was a military woman who fought against Spanish Imperialism until she was betrayed and executed. Her death date, September 5th, is now the International Day of Indigenous Women and her legacy is upheld as a name for the primary women's union in Bolivia, the Bartolina Sisa Confederation.
Sisa was born in Q'ara Qhatu in what was then the Viceroyalty of Peru (now Bolivia). She was an indigenous woman of the Aywara people, native to the Andean Mountain Range, where she was raised under the rule of the Spanish as a peasant.
She and her husband joined the indigenous resistance against the violent and injustice Spanish rule, and due to her intelligence, Sisa was given leadership of an army of 40,000 armed militiamen. All told, the organization of 150,000 indigenous people laid siege to the city of La Paz for over half a year.

¡Jallalla Bartolina Sisa!

September 5: Long live International Day of Indigenous Women / Día Internacional de la Mujer Indígena!
September 5 is the International Day of Indigenous Women, a date which marks the 1782 execution of guerrilla leader Bartolina Sisa at the hands of Spanish colonists in La Paz, Bolivia.
Sisa, with her husband and brother-in-arms Tupac Katari, led an indigenous uprising against Spanish rule in Peru.
“She was a woman of struggle, a leader who died for us, her sisters," says Marta Verastigue Chura of the CNMCIO Barotlina Sisa Federation.
Bartolina Sisa was captured, drawn and quartered by the Spanish in 1782 just under a year after Tupac Katari was executed in the same manner. His last words were, “I will return, and I will come as millions,” something Verastigue Chura echoes, taking about the growth of the indigenous women's movement. "Today we are millions of women who have organized ourselves.”
