for a while when I was a kid I thought “opposable thumbs” was a silly phrase to refer to the trade-off of how intelligent and capable but also horribly destructive and short-sighted humans are….I thought it was like “thumbs are neat but we abuse their power which is very oppose-able. we’re the only creatures that have them and we’re the only creatures fucking shit up like this. coincidence I think NOT” that’s what I thought it meant

I’m giving your dinosaurs opposable thumbs. They will rule, once again
Believe it or not, birds have a significant amount of kinetic motion in their skulls (ie, there are joints in the skull that we mammals don't have). Between that and the dexterity of many bird feet, opposable thumbs would just be redundant and unhelpful.
IE, parrots and a bunch of other living dinos already have the equivalent, thank you very much!

i cut my thumb open yesterday while cooking and i basically can’t use my thumb now or the cut will reopen because of how deep it was. and it reminded me that i dated a guy with three fingers on one hand and idk if he realizes that he kinda won the lottery that one of those three is a fully functional thumb.

They came a bit late, but my birthday presents from my Mom and Step-Parent arrived. The TBR pile grows once again. :)

Very good article. I remember the FMJ/Benji the Hunted episode and most all the other episodes mentioned. Ebert's taste was much closer to mine, but I always enjoyed hearing what both had to say. I especially enjoyed them talking about the films they were most passionate about, good or bad.

Ok please just hear me out on this one. So you know how sometimes people put something in their mouth, like a pencil, to hold it bc their hands are full? They are using their mouth as a third hand. Now this is where things get wild. Let's consider the mouth as two hands, each jaw being its own individual hand. Humans are really cool because we have opposable thumbs, but when you think about it, the tongue is the 'mouth-hand' equivalent to an opposable thumb. The definition of opposable thumb is "a thumb that can be placed opposite the fingers of the same hand." If our jaw is our hand, and our teeth are our fingers, that would make out tongue a thumb. The tongue can move left and right, which would oppose the veridical movement of our jaws. Even if we only say out bottom jaw has a thumb (tongue), because that is the "hand" the thumb is attached to, that still means we would have a third hand with a thumb. By definition our tongue is the opposable thumb, of the 'mouth-hand.' (I know this isn't like, scientifically sound... But it's a fun concept to think about. Plus with this (slightly irrational and incorrect) argument, you could say any animal with a jaw, teeth, and tongue have opposable thumbs.) Thank you for coming to my TedTalk :))

My Throbbing Opposable Thumb

“Dinosaurs are extinct today because they lacked opposable thumbs and the brainpower to build a space program.” — Neil deGrasse Tyson Like most people, opposable thumbs are not something I tend to think much about…until yesterday. Yesterday I took a dive, forehead planting just outside my home. Luckily, I chose a large patch of un-mowed clover to crash into. I’d like to blame my puppies, but it…

Hot take: the authors purposefully kept the Animorphs from ever properly taking advantage of a raccoon morph (until Book 52, maybe) because racoon morphs are too OP. Change my mind, tumblr.
I guess I'm not of the mindset that there are animals more OP or UP than others. It feels antithetical to the whole philosophy of Animorphs, which is all about all animals having unexpected advantages and there being no such thing as a "best" animal.
That said. What advantages does raccoon have? Genuine question — all I know about them is a) rabies and b) trash theft.
