hi SQOTD anon! 👋 (I think ur doing a great thing btw these are really fun!) I'll talk about OCs for this! I guess ive never really mentioned that jude isn't wholly human, his mom is, but his dad is like kind of a god but not really, but for ease I will just say that jude is a demigod 😉 also not really shown much but ophelia always says the wrong thing, no matter how hard she tries not to... then there's alana, a small fact about her is that she wanted to be a marine biologist, but life had other plans... small lyra fact is that shes adopted, which is why her and ophelia are cousins even though they look nothing alike. THEN these characters are luna's canon kids (heh) and then finally that my dnd character hallow (who has a sim) was raised by cultists which is why she is a warlock basically :>

Maraposas & Milagros

Summary:

In the Land of Miracles there’s a special ceremony taken place to honor the woman who founded their homeland and her family by lighting butterfly shaped candles and setting them free into the night sky. The time leading up to the event is a big community party in the town’s center.

Concept:

It all starts when Oscar gets a call from one of his sisters reminding him of the festival that’s happening tomorrow. He promised his sisters that he would bring a few friends since they worry about him at NRC. After hanging up he goes to Ramshackle to invite the Prefects. Estella finds him at the door and lets him in. He sees the Prefects sitting down in the lounge and asks them, and Grim, if they would like to visit his home. He goes into further details about the festival, Oruguita Liberta, in which everyone in his town honors the founding woman and her family by lighting candles that turn into butterflies and flutter around in the air. He then asks if they’re willing to go, to which they say yes. He thanks them and goes on to invite Marrin, Riddle, Jade, Jack, and Lilia.

The next day they arrived at the Mirror Chamber and are taken to the Land of Miracles. The town square, Famila Center, is decorated with many butterfly themed decorations and vendors selling their goods. They meet Maya and Reneta, with their friends. After greetings were exchanged the triplets take them to their house so they can put their bags down and get changed into their attire. Grim even gets a bow that’s decorated with butterflies. After they get changed they meet their mom, Alana Maldición. She welcomes her children home and their friends. She tells them they’re free to explore the square for the day but reminds them to be back before sundown. Before they depart, she serves some snacks for her guests as hospitality is very important in the home.

Lily asks why they need to meet back and Reneta explains that they’ll be getting their candles for later. They depart from the house and head back to the square. The triplets take them to a group of statues with a fountain surrounding them. They tell them it’s the Gifted Family, the family who first settled in the area. One by one the triplets go through the family:

As they talk about the family, Oscar mentions that there isn’t much about the Seer of the Future as at one point, people didn’t talk about him for some reason. When asked why, they said that they didn’t know why. After the history lesson, they head to a vendor and try the variety of arepas, a staple food in their home. It’s said that recipe was crafted by the Healing Cook but only her cooking had the power to heal whoever ate it. After she died, the dish was passed down to honor her. Oscar gets a few of them for himself as they’re his favorite food. They also get coffee to drink.

Minako notices the kids drinking the coffee and asks if it’s normal. Maya confirms that it is, but it’s best not to give them too much. After eating they go exploring around the other stands. Grim comes across a puzzle where by connecting the pieces it’ll reveal a secret picture. He gives it a go and the picture is of the Botanical Keeper and Magicless Savior hugging. As they continue roaming around, they find souvenirs for their friends back at school. Riddle is intrigued by the many toys that were based on animals that were with the Father of Beastaming. Lilia is fond of a cloak that can temporarily change your looks to whoever pops into mind. Jack likes the weights with donkeys on them. Jade is fond of the many mushrooms in their terrariums, some said to have been crafted by the Botanical Keeper. Estella likes the butterfly handkerchief she found, and a plush donkey. They also try more local food like coco rice and patacones.

Then they come across a little stage where a variety of creatures very performing shows. Anyone can enter if they wish and Oscar decides to enter and use the rats to put on a telenovela. While he plots out the story the rest of the group goes and captures rats (Twistune here) Once the rats were gathered he rehearses the plot and the show is on. The group were confused by the plot but everyone else loves it. Once sundown hits they all head to the triplets home and get their candles. She also hands them a match saying that turns the candle’s shape into a butterfly.

Alana leads the group to the edge of a river, one that’s incredibly beautiful. They all wade into the shallows and watch the sun fall. Once the moonlight is shining every strikes their match and lights their candles. After a few moments of waiting, and complaining from Grim, they all watch in awe as the candle glows from the inside and transforms into a butterfly. The butterflies take off flying in a circle around everyone in town. As they stand there and watch for a moment they start to hear music. Alana says that part of the tradition is to dance underneath the lights and that’s what they all do. (Twistune here)

Assimilation #8: Surrender

"Are you uncomfortable, Ophelia?" Dr. Simon asked. "No," Dr. Ophelia Brown replied, though she continued to hug herself tightly. "This is my home. Are you uncomfortable?" Dr. Simon smiled and said, "Of course not. But this isn't my session, Ophelia. You're off the clock."

Ophelia dodged the therapist's gaze, training her eyes on a watercolor painting of Carpenter State's central square hanging above the fireplace. It was crooked. She bit her lip. "You're more tense than usual," Dr. Simon noted. "A student?" "No, it's nothing like that," Ophelia mumbled. "Some counselors, especially young ones, struggle to separate the personal lives of students from their own, Ophelia." "I said it was nothing like that," she snapped. "And I'm not young. I've been counseling students for almost ten years."

Dr. Simon nodded and crossed his legs.

"I've just been feeling...off." "Off?" he repeated. "How would you define off?" He noted how Ophelia was fiddling with her marriage band and added, "Could it be marital?"

"Jack is fine," she said. "It's just lately...he hasn't been doing it for me. Nothing is doing it for me. I just feel empty." "And how has Jack responded?" "Jack is great. He would never say anything. But I know it worries him." "Depression is often characterized as intense sadness, but it's more a lack of feeling."

Ophelia hugged herself tighter. "I know what depression is, Mike," she said. "I talk to twenty miserable kids a day. I don't know what this is. Something's missing."

Three weeks had passed since Ophelia Brown's last meeting with Nina Peerman, but she didn't even know that the meeting had taken place. Nina's story wasn't unlike a lot of the students she'd been seeing recently. She'd been blacking out, losing hours. Any more stories like that and Ophelia would have to classify it a genuine Carpenter State phenomenon. In their last session, Ophelia induced Nina into a trance, awakening the creature that inhabited the young woman's body. Ophelia became the first person to speak directly to the Master. It touched her mind, pulled her down, and exhibited the breadth of its power over living organisms. The feeling was indescribable, and for just a moment Ophelia's mind belonged to the Master. But as Ophelia submitted herself for assimilation, the Master returned control of Nina's body and the young girl left. Though Ophelia had forgotten the events of that afternoon, the Master's touch lingered inside her mind like a burn. It was a feeling that nagged her. The feeling that she could never be complete until she was truly among the Master's colony.

Things quieted down. And though she continued her job, she found herself dulling out advice to students as coldly as a doctor prescribing medication. She no longer felt engaged in anything. No matter how much she wanted to, she couldn't care about these kids' lives. She couldn't even care about her own.

And then one day as Ophelia was evaluating her notes on a troubled student, she heard a familiar echo.

A sharp gasp escaped Ophelia's lips and her body straightened rigidly in its chair. "Master..." she whispered, and as if summoned a young woman stepped into her room and took a seat across from Ophelia's desk. This time it wasn't Nina. The Master came to her in the body of a young woman named Alana Barnes. She sat there watching, her pearl-white eyes reflecting Ophelia's image back at her.

"Hello, Dr. Brown," Alana spoke with a cordial smile, her vivacious voice replaced with something softer and more formal. "Hello, Alana," Ophelia replied, though she had never spoken with this girl before. Truthfully her name didn't matter, she was just another vessel for the Master. "How may I help you?" "The Master wishes to speak to you again, Dr. Brown."

Ophelia's heartbeat began to pick up. "I offered myself to the Master," Ophelia frowned. "Am I not worthy?"

"The Master's genesis is a mystery even to itself. The only thing we know is conquest. However, you managed to speak directly to the Master through the vessel called Nina and now it hopes to find its answer through you. The Master fears assimilating you." "Master," Ophelia said. "I'll do anything to help."

"anything..." Alana repeated, and Ophelia could hear in the young woman's deepening voice that the Master was coming out. "slave..." it said.

"Yes!" Ophelia cried. Her eyes rolled back as a wave of pleasure wracked her body. Shaking, she squeezed her breast in an attempt to ground herself. "I'm your slave..." she smiled, her eyes closed as she sank into the feeling of surrender once again. "Why do you conquer?" she asked. "Why do you...why do you take vessels?"

"weak..." it replied. "vessels...give strength...numbers..." "Master is everywhere," Ophelia repeated the words it had said to her the last time they met, and she licked her lips. "Why do you need more numbers?" "...alone...so alone..." "Loneliness is...very human feeling," Ophelia's breathing picked up, her mind beginning to slip back into ecstasy. She felt as if she was underwater, drowning in pleasure. "Oh!" she gasped. "human..." it replied. "once human...now alone..." "Oh god," she gasped. "Oh, Master! I can't! I need it! I need you inside of me!" "close..." the Master said. "Can't...can't think..."

Ophelia had taken the Master closer to its origin than any of the hundreds of slaves it had collected around campus. But now in its presence, completely surrendered to its power, Ophelia could no longer think as a therapist. "Perfect me, Master," she begged. "Please! Make me like one of your beautiful vessels!" She climbed over the desk, pressing her mouth to the vessel Alana's lips. The girl blinked, and the Master was gone, but it continued to issue the two women commands as they tumbled onto the office floor.

The women obeyed, surrendering their bodies to their Master while the Master, too, surrendered something of itself. Ophelia was a lost cause, and now the only answer the Master had was conquest. It couldn't stop until every human being surrendered its body, mind, and will. The women moaned on the floor as their naked bodies rubbed against each other. And when the Master told Ophelia to drink, she pressed her tongue to Alana's pussy and lapped up the black juice that flowed through the bodies of all the Master's slaves.

Two days later, Dr. Simon met Ophelia at her home once again for another session.

"Quite the transformation," he observed. Ophelia was looser than she'd been the week before. "Did you find what you were missing?"

"I believe I did, Dr.," Ophelia replied, casually messaging her chest, making tiny circles with her finger. It drew Dr. Simon's attention to her cleavage, her blouse unbuttoned well below her bra.

"Yes, well," he cleared his throat. "I don't suppose you want to share what you found with me?" "Of course, Dr.," she smiled. "I love to share."

I do actually think that something feels gendered about specifically GJH’s motives wrt Abigail. Although it’s difficult to tell if it’s there or if I’m bringing it and it’s certainly vague enough that there are different valid interpretations. But Elise Nichols’s white dress connotes, like, purity balls to me & that slots into GJH’s anxieties feeling like they’re about specifically (symbolic) end-of-girlhood I do agree that Abigail herself (her reactions to GJH, her involvement in his crimes, her feelings about that, and certainly her relationship to Will and Hannibal) doesn’t feel gendered in the same way. Because this is the way I am now it occurs to me that the gendered/not-gendered divide falls almost exactly along the lines of what was adapted from Red Dragon vs what new material was added in the show

Yeah - as I said, there are definitely "ins" for a reading of what's going on with her that takes gender into account. And I will walk back a bit on what I said in my OP about none of the girls' deaths feeling gendered, because I'd agree that Elise Nichols' white dress (complete with the bloodstains!), along with the mentions of her being a virgin, and the enactment of her being murdered in her bed, do suggest a very gendered fixation on virginity and sexual purity. And that does shed some light on how GJH might be seeing Abigail (because, as we've discussed, despite it being explicitly stated that he doesn't rape the girls, there is a definite vibe that there's an incestuous undertone to his fixation on Abigail).

But none of that iconography actually extends to Abigail herself - the imagery around her near and then eventual death is always just her throat being cut, without any sexualization or Ophelia-style emphasis on her beauty in death (the kind of thing I'd associate with a "dead girl character"). Which is why I'd say it feels overstated as a reading to me, at least unless the person making it is outlining the actual interpretive steps they're taking to reach it (which you did, up there!). I'm partly just nitpicking and wishing people would make a clearer distinction between "this is what the canon is doing" and "this is one potential interpretation of what the canon is doing."

There is a weird dissonance between what the show itself is doing and what the material from the books it's adapting is doing. Because now that you mention it, the instances of sexism on the show - the Red Dragon murders (although the misogyny is toned down a lot), and Margot's arc - do both come from the books. There's also Alana getting sexually harassed a couple of times, but again, that's a reference to stuff that happens to Clarice in the books. The show itself is so deliberately apolitical in its approach that it can feel kind of jarring as a contrast (also why stuff like Hannibal and Will killing homophobes in fanfic can feel out of place, to me).

Several of the responses to my old Louise Hobbs post are also interested in applying the Woman In Refrigerator trope to Louise which…ehhh…the whole point is that her death _doesn’t_ particularly serve anyone’s arc. It feels like there’s a compulsion to put her in a box and call it misogyny when in that case I think the show just needed a minor character & wouldn’t have been particularly well served by trying to flesh her out!

Replying to this last because it's a bit afield of the topic, in the sense that there's a distinction to me between sexist writing and writing that invokes sexism on an in-story level (though ofc they can overlap). (Like, for example, I would be sympathetic to an argument that Abigail going from being her own character to being subsumed fully into a symbolic role re: Hannigram has a sexist element to it, even if there are narratively interesting things to me about that symbolic status, but I think that's a different thing from making a claim about the story actively invoking her gender in how it presents her.)

Re: Louise - I was going to say "well it wouldn't be fridging because she was killed to serve Abigail's arc, not a man's" but as you said, she's actually not. Aside from a few cursory mentions, Abigail never brings her up, and most of her emotions and ongoing concerns are centered on her dad, not her mom.

Honestly, rather than fridging, I'd say what's going on with Louise just feels more like the Cursory Wife/Mother who exists in the background to explain where this kid came from, but we know virtually nothing about. It doesn't feel as objectionable with this specific character in this specific context, but it does ding a pattern for me that I notice in, say, Tolkien or GRRM's works. I do think on a Watsonian level, you could make some interesting extrapolations about how little Abigail mentions her or seems to think about her, and what that says about their relationship or the family dynamic. But she's so ephemeral that I honestly think it might have made more sense to just not have Abigail's mother in the picture at all.

Th'problem I have with a lot of takes on Abigail is that they seem... extremely gendered, or determined to contextualize everything about her character in terms of gender and misogyny. And while that makes sense with characters like Margot, or even arguably Alana, I just don't think gender is a key thematic concern in what's going on with Abigail.

Like, I'm thinking of takes on her as a predestined "dead girl character" archetype, or the Laura Palmer parallels - and while the Twin Peaks interpolation is pretty big in Hannibal, and there are some points of comparison, I just think that what Laura and Abigail have going on is entirely different (given, for example, that Abigail isn't the epitome of teenage femininity and the object of lust, and that her and her doppelgangers' deaths aren't nearly as explicitly wrapped up in the discourses of the eroticization of young women's deaths).

I'll acknowledge it's possible I'm biased here, given that I do more often tend to get drawn to female characters who are "gender unmarked", but... I just genuinely do not think Abigail's arc has much to do with gender! I think one thing mencie's fic is good at demonstrating is that putting a male character in her position doesn't change the themes of her arc at all - and the only things that do change are a result of Will and Abigail's different personal dispositions.

I don't think it's impossible to come up with a reading of her that involves gender, or that such readings are necessarily wrong. But I do think it would be an extrapolation that would require bringing in other stuff in conversation with the source material. It's not a reading, to me, that feels like it has a direct through line to what we see in canon, in the same way that "family trauma and legacy" or "nurture vs. nature vis-a-vis murder" as thematic concerns of her arc do. And it's a reading that I just find a bit personally alienating.
