OpenCPN

OpenCPN è un software di navigazione  gratuito da utilizzare sia come chartplotter quando siamo in mare sia come strumento di pianificazione nelle lunghe serate invernali.  Questo programma è stato sviluppato e viene aggiornato da diverse decine di navigatori/programmatori che hanno messo a disposizione le proprie conoscenze e il proprio tempo per creare un software facile da utilizzare, funzionale e open source, di modo che chiunque abbia voglia e capacità possa apportare il suo contributo.

OpenCPN viene utilizzato non solo da chi va in mare per diletto, ma si è guadagnato il rispetto anche dei professionisti della cartografia, di questo ne ho avuto conferma un paio di anni fa, quando a Barcellona ebbi la possibilità di salire a bordo di una nave Oceanografica spagnola,  arrivando in plancia riconobbi subito l’interfaccia di OpenCPN su due schermi, il comandante mi disse che lo avevano scelto per la facilità di utilizzo e per la versalità.

Gli sviluppatori si sono impegnati per rendere OpenCPN compatibile con il maggior numero di sistemi operativi, per cui sul sito www.opencpn.org alla pagina Downloads possiamo trovare le versioni per Windows, Mac e per le varie distribuzioni Linux. Su Google Play si trova invece la versione Android.

Oltre alle classiche funzioni di navigazione, nel tempo i developers di OpenCPN hanno creato una moltitudine di plug-in che ci permettono di aumentare le funzionalità del programma stesso. Nella pagina web  https://www.opencpn.org/OpenCPN/info/downloadplugins.html si trovano i vari plugin disponibili per i vari sistemi operativi. Nei prossimi articoli andremo a vedere quali sono a nostro avviso i più utili che girano su Windows.

E’ stato scelto di non mettere tutti i plugin dentro il file di installazione, per avere un programma “leggero” e personalizzabile, invece di creare un programma “pesante” per i computer e con una serie di funzionalità non gradite all’operatore. Grazie a queste scelte OpenCPN può girare tranquillamente anche su device poco potenti.

Per iniziare ad usare openCPN dobbiamo partire dall’installazione dell’ultima versione stabile (Latest Release), che si trova nel sito sotto la voce Downloads , scegliendo la release adatta al nostro sistema operativo.

 Una volta scaricato il file, con un semplice doppio click possiamo far partire l’installazione guidata che caricherà il programma nel nostro computer e creerà un icona sul desktop.

Se lanciamo il programma ci apparirà la seguente schermata:

 Il software per poterci essere di ausilio nella navigazione ha bisogno di carte, che possono essere sia vettoriali che raster.  In più deve essere fisicamente collegato ad un GPS (se non è interno al device) e ai vari strumenti di cui voglio visualizzare i dati, per esempio AIS, Radar, strumentazione vento, ecoscandaglio, bussola ecc.

Se non possediamo nessun tipo di carte nautiche da utilizzare, possiamo utilizzare il Chart Downloader, chiedere a qualche amico oppure andare in rete alla ricerca di quello che ci serve. Ma cosa e dove cercare?

Per chi avesse bisogno di una cartografia che copra l’intero pianeta le CM93 ormai sono uno standard. In poco più di 1 Gbyte di memoria riescono a coprire tutto i mari e oceani con un ottima risoluzione e dettaglio.

All’indirizzo  https://www.opencpn.org/OpenCPN/info/chartsource gli sviluppatori di OpenCpn hanno fatto un elenco, non esaustivo, dei link dove è possibile ottenere carte nautiche sia gratuite che a pagamento con commenti esplicativi del servizio.

Queste carte provengono dallo sforzo congiunto di diportisti che stanno cercando di creare una cartografia gratuita, affidabile e sempre aggiornata dei mari. Con l’ausilio delle nuove tecnologie a breve queste carte inizieranno ad avere anche i dettegli delle profondità, misurate registrate e inserite dai diportisti che girano per i mari.   Ora che abbiamo copiato le nostre carte nautiche nell’ hard disk, dobbiamo dire al programma dove si trovano. Per fare questo dobbiamo cliccare sull’icona a forma di chiave inglese nella barra degli strumenti in alto e poi sull’icona Carte,  si aprirà questa finestra.

 In questo caso vediamo che abbiamo installato le carte vettoriali CM93 nel drive D, mentre nel disco C abbiamo le carte raster dell’istituto idrografico USA dello stato del Massachuttes.

Di seguito vediamo come si presentano graficamente i due tipi di carte.

CM93 particolare zoom sul canale di accesso al porto di Boston. Con le carte vettoriali quando vado a zoommare gli elementi visualizzati rimangono della stessa grandezza, aumenta il dettaglio della carta e il numero di informazioni se nell’aerea selezionata sono presenti.

Particolare zoomato del canale di accesso al porto di Boston, nelle carte raster, essendo immagini georeferenziate, andiamo ad ingrandire tutti gli elementi, ovvero non vengono aggiunti altri elementi alla carta come nel caso delle carte vettoriali. Il programma ci avverte in alto a  sinistra che abbiamo zoomato troppo. (OverZoom)

La visualizzazione delle carte vettoriali è personalizzabile, su OpenCPN possiamo variare i parametri  da Opzioni andando sotto Display grafico vettoriale. Nel menù a tendina Preset Visualizzazione, possiamo scegliere gli elementi delle carte vettoriali che il software ci deve mostrare a video. Più elementi decidiamo di mostrare, più abbiamo bisogno di potenza di calcolo, pena un rallentamento del sistema.

La visualizzazione delle carte vettoriali è personalizzabile.

 Di seguito due immagini relative alla stessa area, la prima con un impostazione “pesante” ovvero dove viene chiesto al software di mostrare più elementi e dettagli, la seconda più “leggera” per il processore e più scarna per l’occhio. In questi casi il Livello dettaglio CM 93 giuoca un ruolo determinante.

Visualizzazione degli elementi standard molto semplificati e con poco dettaglio. Questo esempio un po’ spinto ci mostra come nelle carte vettoriali bisogna stare molto attenti alle impostazioni e al livello di zoom, (l’incidente di Team Vesta docet). Per cui dobbiamo perdere un po’ di tempo a giocare con le impostazioni delle carte vettoriali per trovare il settaggio più confacente alle nostre esigenze.

A seconda dello schermo che stiamo utilizando e della nostra vista, potremmo trovarci in difficoltà a leggere el batimetriche oppure a riconoscere i simboli più piccoli. Su openCPN possiamo variare il fattore di scala sia dell’interfaccia che degli elementi visualizzati sulla carta. Per accedere a questo dobbiamo andare sotto la tendina Interfaccia, sempre sotto il menù Opzioni.

 Una volta che abbiamo aggiunto le carte, possiamo pensare ai collegamenti degli strumenti, che verrranno gestiti sotto la voce Connessioni.

In questo caso vediamo che ci sono collegati un GPS seriale attrerso la porta serial COM7 e un AIS con la COM3, in entrambi i casi il software riceve solo le informazioni, se fosse collegato un autopilota le informazioni le riceverebbe (angolo di barra, prua ecc.) ma le invierebbe anche (posizione GPS, prua da tenere-bearing). Una volta che abbiamo installato le carte, il GPS funziona possiamo iniziare a navigare!

Nella barra degli strumenti troviamo una serie di tasti per gestire lo zoom, passare da una carta a scala minore a una maggiore e viceversa, creare una rotta, mettere la barca (nostra posizione al centro dello schermo), aprire la finestra impostazioni, visualizzare o nascondere il testo nella carta, attivare la visualizzazione target AIS, Visualizzare correnti e livello maree, stampare, gestione Waypoint, rotte e tracce, attivare la registrazione della traccia, visione notturna, info sul software e infine il Man over Board.

Per dotare un pc di GPS il modo più semplice ed economico è comprare un USB  GPS dongle . Sul mercato ce ne sono di svariate forme.

   Per ottenere le migliori prestazioni il dongle dovrebbe essere installato in un luogo dove possa captare i segnali del GPS, quindi all’esterno  ma anche sotto un’oblò può essere sufficiente.

Si je remet ici le lien vers le site de Pierre Lavergne c'est que son fabuleux travail de compilation des cartes marines pour marins fauchés a été remis à jour en janvier 2017 et qu'il est incontournable avec le logiciel libre de navigation OpenCpn que nombre d'entre eux utilisent.

Face aux coûts astronomiques que représentent les achats de cartes marines traditionnelles pour celles et ceux qui comptent naviguer loin (transat par exemple avec cartographie détaillée des points de chutes ou mouillages: c'est en milliers d'€uros que vous devrez calculer pour avoir la plupart des cartes indispensables) ou celles et ceux qui comptent simplement pré-étudier les routages et lieux de mouillages avec infos précises cette solution peut être réellement viable pour peu que l'on ne se contente pas de ces informations mais qu'on les recoupe suivant les conseils avisés de Pierre.

Ok il faut étudier tout ça en détail et mettre un peu les mains et les neurones dans le cambouis pour ne pas faire n'importe quoi mais le jeu en vaut vraiment intellectuellement et financièrement la chandelle.
