Photoshop - heading
Leaf cut out + colour:
Use pen tool (p) and raw over the area I want to work with to make a path. ~ You can tweak the path by press 'A' and modifying the anchor points and moving the handles. (IMG1) Then to chnage the path from a path to a selection, you need to open the 'Paths' window. Go to Window -> Paths. Then press command + click on the thumbnail image of the paths window to turn the path into a selection. Now you have selcted soemthing using a pen tool (IMG2)
After making this into a selection I then changed the selection of the leaves by using colour balance and I made the leaves fade blue.
Fruit colour: Select an area
I used the elliptical marquee tool to highlight the orange roughly. ~ I can use the spacebar to move the selection around while making the selection. I then used the elliptical tool to remove part of the selection by holding down option while making an elliptical shape over the area I didn't want apart of the selection. I then went over in finer detail of the orange selection by using the polygonal tool. I used this tool to draw custom lines of the areas I did and didn't want to be apart of the selection (shift to add, option to remove from the selection)
After making this selection more accurate and fine, I then modified the colour of the orange, I decided to make it red tones. (IMG1)
We then picked a second orange and this time used the object selection tool to select it quickly. We then applied the colour balance adjustment to the selection layer. This effect goes onto all the layers. But there is a button (IMG2) when it is clicked it will not have the effect (e.g, colour balance) on every layer below (white square with little arrow). This is found in the adjustments layer, properties section at the bottom of the window. I then did the same thing with another orange, except this time I made this 2nd orange become blue (IMG3)
Ship duplicate:
Use masquee tool to select the boat Command + J to copy and paste the selected area on a ne wlayer by itlsef. Move the new layer to another spot on the water (to look like two boats) Press the masking icon (japanese flag) to turn the copied boat into a mask. Use thw brush tool to help blend in the image and get rid of excess parts of the image you dont want. ~ White brush = 100%. Black brush = 0% opacity. Grey brush = some opacity (closer to black, less opacity, closer to white more opaxity.) Ypu can also use the soft and hard brushes to chnage how the image fades from one to the other. I used the softer brush so the water from both images faded into eachother more.
Hummingbird: Cutout & Paste
I created a duplicate of the bird image to work with as a spare. I then used the object selection tool to quickly select the bird shape from the background, but this object selection tool made some errors, so I had to fix them. I made a new layer and made it a dark green colour to help me easily see the mistake and things I need to work on with the outside of the bird selection. (green screen) After looking a the green screen image bird (IMG1), I then realized the wing ends of the bird were quite sharp and not very realisic, so it would've looked weird when I paste it into the new photo background. To fix up the shaping of the bird cut out I made a mask layer of the bird (IMG2)
I used the pen tool and went along the bird wing. I drew the line very close to the edge of the bird wing, because I didn't want any of the original background still in the cutout image of the bird. (IMG1) We then went onto the masked layer and coloured the wing section in white (so it fully showed), and coloured the exterior of the wing section in black (so it was invisible). (IMG2) This then made the wing very crisp, so I had to change that. I could tell it was very crisp because I had created a greenscreen layer to help me see what I was working with against something. (IMG3) To do this I used the blur tool to blur the edges of the wing of the bird, so that the shape of the bird looked more natural and less crispy and unrealistic when it was put into the new photo background.
I then went around the bird shape and made sure everything was properly cutout using the pen tool so that when I placed the bird image on the new background it would only contain the bird, and nothing else. I removed a bit of dark background below the beak, and between the toes of the bird. (IMG1) The background can also blend into the photo and/or effect the colouring of the image so I re-coloured some parts of the bird such as the top of the bird head and underneath and belly I used the brush tool and used the lighten and dark effect to change how the brush was applied. (IMG2) I then flipped the picture of the bird so that the bird image would face in a better direction for the new background image. I did this by going to Image -> image rotation -> Flip image (IMG3) I then adjusted the lighting on both the bird image and the background image to better fit and blend in with each other (IMG4)
REFLECTION: I loved doing the leaf cut out one, because I enjoy using the pen tool and I also enjoyed using the colour balance tool to make the plant appear to have a fading blue power stemming form the middle!! I was easy, but helpful and I enjoyed learning what I could do.
The fruit activity was super helpful in teaching me the different ways to use selection tools, what works best and why, and what I prefer. I prefer starting the the object selection tool, and then cleaning it up afterwards with the pen/lasso tool.
I found the boat activity very fun because it was as if I was creating something new all together. I have also always wondered the technique of copying something and making it fade into the background smoothly, so it was great to see how to do it using the different opacities and brush tools.
The humming bird was definitely the hardest, more complicated one of the 4 different tasks. But this task proved to be super helpful when moving onto doing more photoshop cut out (such as the jumping man). It was good to know the techniques of changing the colours of some edges, to remove unwanted light and shadow sources to help blend things in, and also to learn the techniques of blurring the edges of the moving wings to fade in better!
Overall I enjoyed this lesson a lot and learning various skills, tricks and techniques of the different possible ways to manipulate photos in photoshop!

VITTORE BARONI ON > ETERNAL BEYOND II II >" (MY CAT IS AN ALIEN & JOËLLE VINCIARELLI) FOR BLOW UP MAGAZINE:

ULULATIONISM
“Now playing: two new LPs by the ever prolific My Cat Is An Alien, the Opalio brothers from Torino IT. These cats go deep into their very own idiosyncratic sound world always with an invitation to collaborate, collude and collide with musicians and artists everywhere. The first LP is a 3 sided set recorded live at their 20th anniversary show. Both sonic brother Lee Ranaldo and Marseille free guitar maestro Jean-Marc Montera get into a heavy meditation of sound and breath with Lee intoning passing verbiage at the top and tail of the performance bringing the music into the moment of everydayness. Both Lee and MCIAA share pages of visual art in the booklet attached to the LPs front. Nice. The other disc is in collab with ululationist Joëlle Vinciarelli best know as howling free black metal voice for Talweg and La Morte Young. Here the work resounds as in a whispered night where promise comes as mystery. Only 100 copies of this killer. Also: nice. Stay well as you can be and move towards understanding that nature is our guide.” Thurston Moore, Facebook, Instagram

R.I.P. Michal Brunclík, one half of Czech trio BIRDS BUILD NESTS UNDERGROUND (BBNU), formed with Petr Ferenc (aka Phaerentz) in Prague in 2003, and later joined by film maker Martin Ježek, for sure one of the most innovative bands that ever came out from there! -- My Cat Is An Alien send eternal love for the amazing record made in collaboration with the two experimental turntablists, an album which stands as one of MCIAA's highlights -- Listen to "GRAMOFONU = Voice of the Universe" (LP, 2010, Opax / Love Nest, private press) on Bandcamp, Roberto Opalio made the cover painting and also provided the title, suggested by the astounding acetate that Michal, Petr and Martin dug up in the cellars of Czech Radio and which opens up the whole album: it's a never-released recording by Vítězslav Nezval (1900-1958), a Czech surrealist poet, a total genius and a prime mover of Czech avant-garde art before World War II, in contact with the French surrealists (Breton etc.) and leader of Czech surrealist group... POST-POST-SCRIPTUM 1185
MY CAT IS AN ALIEN & JOËLLE VINCIARELLI > ETERNAL BEYOND II >
OPAX / UP AGAINST THE WALL, MOTHERFUCKERS!
“The Opalio brothers have had quite an impressive history of adventurous collaborations over the years, as they have been joined by many of the most iconic figures in underground music, as well as an inspired array of interesting folks that I had not previously encountered. Naturally, a number of those unions have yielded wonderful results, but one of my favorites was the Opalios’ pairing with Talweg/La Morte Young’s Joëlle Vinciarelli for 2016’s Eternal Beyond. Several other artists have gamely and effectively adapted themselves to the brothers' unique aesthetic and working method over the years, yet Vinciarelli is the one who was most successful at finding and filling a space that made the collaboration feel like something more than the mere sum of its parts. More specifically, she brings some welcome bite and visceral intensity to the Opalios' phantasmagoric and alien reveries. Consequently, I am absolutely thrilled to report that this trio has now become a recurring project and that Eternal Beyond II is every good as its predecessor (if not even better).
I have not delved very deeply into Joëlle Vinciarelli’s work in Talweg at this point, but I have heard enough to grasp that "black metal" is a woefully inadequate and misleading term for her art. In fact, nothing about Talweg (or Vinciarelli) is remotely conventional at all, which is perhaps why she makes such a perfect foil for her fellow Alps-dwellers. In her own way, she is every bit as genre-defying and radical as the Opalios, but the key difference is that she is driven towards earthy, timeless, and primal forces rather than looking towards the stars for inspiration. Consequently, the improbable collision of Vinciarelli’s "Cro-Magnon grunt and cultic energies" with the Opalios’ mind-melting, deep space lysergia is a perfect, unholy union, enhancing the brothers’ smeared and disorienting psychedelia with a healthy dose of seismic, elemental power. That said, it seems like Vinciarelli also brings out some of those normally latent elements in the Opalios themselves, as the churning and jangling intensity of the opening "Eternal Rage Against the Dying of the Light" is driven primarily by the brothers’ violent misuse of an "antique upright piano soundboard."
It is truly impressive that Maurizio and Roberto managed to unleash such an apocalyptic cacophony in real-time, as the crescendo of "Eternal Rage" sounds like a heaving maelstrom of countless rusted steel strings being viciously attacked at once. There are a lot of other great and unexpected elements to the piece as well, ranging from sharp metallic scrapes to looping, angelic vocal melodies. And, of course, there are also the expected elements: disorienting falsetto vocal drones, buzzing electronics, and howling eruptions of noise. Happily, all of those various threads coexist quite organically and seamlessly, resembling an inspired collision of an ancient throat-singing ritual, a pack of howling wolves, and a goddamn supernova. Unsurprisingly, those ingredients make for quite a potent cocktail and "Eternal Rage" easily ranks among the best MCIAA pieces in recent memory.
The album’s shorter second piece is considerably less extreme, as it is largely centered on the chiming of an "old pendulum clock mechanism." In fact, once Vinciarelli’s melodic, wordless vocals appear, "Eternal Ectoplasmic Communication" almost feels like a lullaby of sorts. That resemblance does not last particularly long, however, as that melody gradually wanders off course as queasily lingering electronics and Maurizio's broken-sounding self-made string instrument creep in to curdle the idyll. The overall experience feels akin to waking up in an unfamiliar house to find a supernatural fog slowly rolling out of a haunted antique clock. While it never quite catches fire or builds towards anything more substantial, it casts quite an effective spell of seething uneasiness and the strangely warbling vocals call to mind a beloved stuff animal that is trying desperately to warn me of imminent peril, but is too paralyzed with fear to do anything but gibber helplessly. While it is quite a solid and likable piece, the earlier "Eternal Rage" unavoidably steals the show on Eternal Beyond II, as it beautifully transcends everything I usually expect from MCIAA. "Eternal Ectoplasmic Communication," on the other hand, feels a bit more familiar (and considerably less apocalyptic).
It is hard to explain why I love the Opalio brothers' albums with Vinciarelli so much without making it sounds like their other albums are in some way lacking, but I will try anyway: a "normal" My Cat is an Alien album is like a window into someone else’s deeply weird and inscrutable dream (and I can think of no one else who reliably conjures up otherworldly vistas as strange and absorbing as those of the Opalios). When Vinciarelli is involved, however, it feels like that dream state is tenuously anchored to a recognizable physical world rather than a straight-up free fall into a bottomless rabbit hole of swirling, nightmarish unreality. Plunging into that altered state is always a compelling experience, but it is a more profound and dynamic one when I can still see distant vestiges of what I left behind (nods to conventional scales, scraping metal, guttural voices). In essence, it is a matter of grounding and contrast. No one does deep space psychedelia better than My Cat is an Alien, but with Eternal Beyond II, the Opalios and Vinciarelli evoke something significantly different that I cannot find anywhere else: the singular collision of the imagined past versus the imagined future, the spectral versus the corporeal, and flesh-and-blood humanity versus the unknowable, abstract vastness of the cosmos.” Anthony D’Amico, Brainwashed
