the question is. when i eventually post the relevant chapter. do i tell my readers why i am having the characters eat dinner at this specific place. or do i just not say anything.

the thing is, this is a place where my dad brought my mom to eat soup, because he found it and the food was amazing. which sounds like a normal enough thing to do, except we live in pennsylvania and this particular restaurant is in las vegas, nevada.

the story goes: dad went on a business trip. and he found this seafood bar in the middle of the casino of the palace station hotel. and the place made great soup. just fabulous soup. dad had their gumbo and immediately went "ok, how many more times can i eat this soup again before i go home," and then he got home and he said "opal. you need to try this gumbo. we need to go to las vegas." "for soup?" said my mom. "yes," said my dad, "for soup. we need to go to las vegas to eat soup." and they did! like a year later! they had granny and grandpa come to look after me and my sister for a week while they fucked off to nevada to eat soup (and do birdwatching)!

...is that a thing to include in an author's note? it's a true story but unless you know my parents, it sounds completely batshit. also, like, it was the '90s, the economy was way different then and everything was a LOT cheaper - i do not think they'd be able to do the same thing today, so i worry it is going to sound grotesquely privileged instead of, idk, definitely privileged but mostly just fucking ridiculous. thoughts? ideas? dal what the fuck is your family? a;lskjdfl;kjlksjfk

I can see Claire's dad was an office worker and well he was terribly bored with his job. He isn't being seen in this boring job, he's just simply another one in an office filled with mundane nobodies. Maybe it was one of the reasons he wants to be a star. He has a very convincing, charming voice that a salesman would have,so possibly an office job that involves sales maybe? Like marketing. I mean he has to get money from somewhere,after all those cosmetics and mirrors ain't free,that tool that holds the mirrors on his head too

It's kinda possible the Father still has his job,he goes to work in the day then well became an obsessive narcissist and rants needlessly about his appearance, his dream of becoming a star when he comes home or at night. Yes I heard that theory that his face is physically mangled by the Mother but it's possible his mangled face is how he sees himself,an ugly appearance

It's possible that "they turn me down, now I live my nightmare" is how he described his life, everyone turn him down so now he's suffering while simply surviving

After all,the Mother and Grandfather use cigarettes, alcohol and pills. They even have running electricity. If none of them work,then how they're getting these stuff anyway? Pills ain't cheap, electricity too,the cosmetics as well. The Father is the most likely,the seemingly functional one to be able to go to work

Definitely agreed, it seems the father tends to go to work during day time and probably the mother did too before her addiction got out of control, a headcanon I actually had that's kinda related to this is that the grandpa was (or maybe even still is) a preacher, with the biblical way the drunken mother ranted I thought it made sense, perhaps the grandfather goes to church and gets money from those donations and field trips and used it to his best advantage
