This is Eris (left, 2020) and her younger half-brother, Bismuth (right, 2023)
Tumblr media
This is Citrine (left, 2023) and her full brother, Bismuth (right, 2023)
Tumblr media
I've talked a lot about how breeding and care matters so hugely to these birds, but I think this is a really obvious example.
When it comes to choosing breeders, 99.9999% of breeders I've seen and spoken to are mainly looking at the males and how pretty their colors are, and largely ignoring the hens. "Any" hen will do- I RARELY see people being choosy. Maybe they don't know how to be, maybe they think it doesn't matter - the hens are not as flashy, so what difference could there really be? - maybe they just don't care, maybe it's hard to find nice ones anyway because people don't care. I don't know. Once in a while I see people going gaga over a nice spalding hen with a lot of color on her, but by and large, they're ignored.
These three birds share a father. Indie is a beautiful boy, and he held his color very well, but honestly his train carriage left a lot to be desired and he was pretty small compared to my own birds. Regardless, he made a few really nice kids, including Amber (Bug), Bismuth, and Citrine (The Trio). He also fathered Eris, Opal, and Onyx, though not with my hens and not on property.
And here's where we get to the point. This is Eris' mom, Sasha:
Tumblr media
And here is The Trio's mom, Aurora:
Tumblr media
Sasha was itty bitty, with a small head, and very short legs. She also didn't have particularly good color- almost none, if I'm being honest, and her train carriage was Not Great. Aurora, on the other hand, while not as leggy as her offspring (which is partially due to feed... I raised her from 3mo old 15 years ago when 'game bird feed' didn't exist and the recommended "best" feed option was chicken layer feed mixed with kitten chow... atrocious by today's standards), still has pretty good type and excellent color. She typically carries her train high, she's spurred, she's Big. She's also an EXCELLENT mother and broody.
On top of having Sasha for a mom, Eris was raised in a brooder, and later in a small pen, and on feed that was 18% protein (instead of the 26-30% they should be on). She didn't have the space early on to use her leg and wing muscles, and it shows in her type. Even though i got her when she was just a couple of months old, those first few months are crucial to their development. Feed and environment can only go so far though.
Anyway, you can see the difference in breeding and care here. Eris is short, stout, short necked, and her rump curves down. Her face, particularly her beak length, is short like her mother's. It's hard to see in the photo, but I assure you her neck lacing is thick/muddy. In contrast, Citrine has thin, clean lacing, she's nearly as leggy as her brother, her neck has richer and more purple color, and her rump does not curve down- you can see the bend where her tail begins and is held down. She's also quite slender/racy in body type, like a good game bird should be, rather than heading toward the stout body type of domestication.
I can tell people that hen choice and care/environment matters until I'm blue in the face, but honestly, I think having comparison photos really brings it home.

Aurora Dragon or Ouránios Dragons
As soon as I saw that particular image I got very inspired and helped me solidify a design for Tim's future friend.
And I must Thank Theo for enabling my endeavors.
Deep purple, near black iridescent scales cover it's long supple body and causes it to shimmer as it moves, much like the dancing lights of an aurora. Their eyes are pale like stars / the full moon - a pearly pupil surrounded by a pale coloured iris.
On clear starlit nights Flights of them can be seen soaring, creating beautiful displays as they weave through the air. Each dragon has a unique pattern with its colours and can recognize each other from it. A beautiful mane of fur stretches all the way to then of its tail, sharing the similar iridescent shimmer as the rest of its body. Incredibly soft and fine, when brushed one could spin it and use it to knit / making things out of it as well as holding magical properties as do their scales.
Older dragons may also bee seen with bits of gemstones embedded in their scales.
Besides size one wag to tell age is by their horns, which as they grow eventually start branching - looking similar to antlers but are very much horns. Older the dragon the larger the horns with more branches - females often having bigger ones
Very social creatures they live in Flights of a small to medium size but not uncommon for multiple flights to gather together, particularly around the time of a full and new moon or on nights when an aurora will be visible.
It is during such times when the dragons will find a mate - or if they already have one reaffirm their bond and start to nest.
Pairs bond for life, through their bond and shared magic an egg is created. Usually just one but can be anywhere up to 3. They appear to the untrained, unfamiliar eyes looks like a large (black) Opal / gemstone.
Another unique trait is for the egg to be able to hatch, it must be loved. True unconditional love from the one who cares for it- which typically isn't an issue as such love comes straight from its parents. Which means a dragon may and can go for years before hatching
The parents will often 'sing' to the eggs so the Kits will already recognize them upon hatching. Some of the sounds they make are akin to whale song. Along with often short clicks and trills, they can also create sounds that are typically beyond frequencies of most creatures hear, with horns acting kind of like picking up those low frequency waves of sound. Not hearing exactly but more like how other animals develop extra sense to help in echolocation.
Their magic and strength comes from the Stars, the Moon, the very night itself. During times of the full moon they will moonbathe, basking to regain their strength. Being at their strongest of course during times of an aurora. Leaving them more vulnerable and weaker during the day so will spend most of it curled up asleep somewhere safe. Such as caves or digging underground dens. Tending to sleep in large piles, entwined with each other. Being very nocturnal they don't have the best vision during the day
They feast mostly on fish but also love berries and any other fresh fruits they can find- including Mountain Blue Moon Berries and Puff Fruits- soft and fuzzy kind of like peaches but larger.
These dragons are known to create hoards out of Silver compared to the often used gold as many other dragons do- both being soft metals that make for fine non flammable bedding, and anything else that sparkles or is soft to make a nest from.
They travel by use of the stars, or perhaps also an innate ability to follow which ever direction the worlds magnetic pull is. Not something taught but an instinct they are born with.
These Dragons are considered to bring good luck and that seeing one on your travels is a sign of good fortune to come, a blessing.
Due to their appearance and ability to fly incredibly high heights there are stories believing them to be able to travel between the physical world and Celestial plain- either as messengers or perhaps Celestial beings themselves. Earning them their Second name Ouránios meaning Heavenly (Not taking into account any other languages / names they may have in other cultures obviously)
Equally so they can dive great depths, with there even being a sub species that has adapted to a more aquatic life. Spending time in deep sea caves or as well as congregate are sea vents and volcanoes.
Well adapted to both Cold and Warm climates, spending more time in the cold leaves their body temperature quite high actually able to keep quite warm and in fact their body temperature will drop so will feel quite cool when they fall ill.
A sick dragon will be lethargic and scales appear quite dull, lack appetite often even for their favorite snack Mountain Blue Moon Berries
--
Whether or not there are others within Wonderland is yet unknown, with only the single egg having been found thus far. It's possible that little dragon may well be the last and only of its kind.

Ravin’ Girls Special Episode: Opal
Episode Summary:
Welcome to our Opal Special Episode, covering the short story released with the paperback edition of The Raven King!
There’s a lot packed into 38 short pages, and both Shannon and Nievita have a lot of feels (ALL THE FEELS!) and a lot to say. Nievita loves little old (Cloud) ladies brazenly reading trashy romance novels (to be fair, Shannon does, too). Shannon thinks Opal needs to be introduced to Mr. Rogers (to be fair, Nievita was unfamiliar with the episode in question). They both agree that Opal is awesome and adorable and also creepy. There’s also plenty of discussion about how the story ties into the upcoming Dreamer Trilogy and what it means for our expectations. As always, stick around to the very end to hear us being ridiculous!

A recycled 22 caliber silver bullet shell casing holds an opalite crystal point. I added a Swarovski aurora borealis channel crystal and a 24 inch silver filled chain. Opalite is an iridescent stone that can be clear or milky. It mimics the flash and color of an opal, but it is man made. Opalite can stabilize emotions and is an ideal stone for meditation and visualization. It helps in understanding of the subconscious and aids in spiritual rebirth and growth. It will strengthen resolve and is often useful in business endeavors. Opalite is beneficial in attaining a state of peacefulness and serenity. It is a good stone to use for REM sleep and can be useful with lucid dreaming. Some people have the misconception that a man-made stone is less effective than a natural gemstone when used in a metaphysical sense. This isn't really true. Because lab grown or man-made gemstones are made up of the same chemical compounds as most natural occurring gemstones, there is little difference in their mineral properties. From the ISG: "Creating gemstones in a lab is an art that must be learned and perfected using imagination and skill. Lab created gemstones are not imitations, they are newly created gemstones that are of the same make up as the mined gemstones. So by definition, gemstones created in a lab cannot be called synthetic because rather than imitate a gemstone...they ARE gemstones. It fact, quartz has been hydrothermally grown for the electronics industry since the time of World War II. As a result the perfection of the crystal growth is so refined that the ability to identify hydrothermal quartz is virtually impossible without scientific equipment." From the GIA: "The hydrothermal growth process is slow and expensive. But it’s the only method for successfully growing created quartz. This process requires heat and pressure that mimics the conditions deep in the earth, resulting in the formation of natural gems. Nutrients are dissolved in a water solution, and then the crystals form as the solution cools."
