Opabinia regalis
(temporal range: 508 mio. years ago)
[text from the Wikipedia article, see also link above]
Opabinia regalis聽is an聽extinct,聽stem group聽arthropod聽found in the聽Middle Cambrian聽Burgess Shale聽Lagerst盲tte聽(505 million years ago) of聽British Columbia.[1]聽Opabinia聽was a soft-bodied animal, measuring up to 7聽cm in body length, and its segmented trunk had flaps along the sides and a fan-shaped tail. The head shows unusual features: five聽eyes, a mouth under the head and facing backwards, and a clawed聽proboscis聽that probably passed food to the mouth.聽Opabinia聽probably lived on the seafloor, using the proboscis to seek out small, soft food.[2]聽Fewer than twenty good specimens have been described; 3 specimens of聽Opabinia聽are known from the Greater聽Phyllopod bed, where they constitute less than 0.1% of the community.[3]
When the first thorough examination of聽Opabinia聽in 1975 revealed its unusual features, it was thought to be unrelated to any known聽phylum,[4]聽or perhaps a relative of arthropod and聽annelid聽ancestors.[2]聽However, later studies since late 1990s consistently support its affinity as a member of basal arthropods, alongside the closely-related聽radiodonts聽(Anomalocaris聽and relatives) and聽gilled lobopodians聽(Kerygmachela聽and聽Pambdelurion).[5][6][7][8][1][9][10]
In the 1970s, there was an ongoing debate about whether聽multi-celled聽animals appeared suddenly during the Early Cambrian, in an event called the聽Cambrian explosion, or had arisen earlier but without leaving fossils. At first聽Opabinia聽was regarded as strong evidence for the "explosive" hypothesis.[4]聽Later the discovery of a whole series of similar聽lobopodian聽animals, some with closer resemblances to arthropods, and the development of the idea of聽stem groups聽suggested that the Early Cambrian was a time of relatively fast聽evolution聽but one that could be understood without assuming any unique evolutionary processes.

Protobulwark, the Shielded Seer Pok茅mon!
Type: Dark/Steel
Evolves from Photonia
Protobulwark spends its time hiding in reefs, waiting for a meal to pass in front of it just to nab with its extended claw. The armor on its back both provides defense and hides it from predators looking down from the water column.

Everyone's favorite five eyed freak of the cambrian, Opabinia regalis. An animal that's weird even when compared to it's closer relatives.

early lostbelts: lee harvey oswald fails to assassinate john f. kennedy during his 1963 motorcade. under JFK's direction as the first and only president to serve for more than four terms, the USA overcomes all obstacles during the decades to follow, hoisting the banner of the "Super United States" and ruling the world through a combination of neo-masonic magecraft and economic thought alchemy.
later lostbelts: theia fails to impact the primordial world during the formation of the solar system, and the earth and the moon are never separated from one another. because organic life evolves much more slowly without the stabilizing cycles of the lunar tides, the world is only now in the equivalent of the cambrian explosion; the dominant planetary species is an opabinia regalis analogue which became intelligent when it ate the chloroplasts of the algae of knowledge, alluding to a depiction of the biblical eden in a little-known 2002 type-moon zine of which only 50 copies were ever printed. now the adam ha-rishon leads his tiny primordial arthropod civilization to shepherd the evolution of all life on the planet, using selective breeding in an attempt to recreate the algae of knowledge and life for all creatures in the cosmos to share-

Discovered in the Burgess Shale (a middle Cambrian formation in British Columbia), this species was only 7 cm long! Note the five eyes and weird looking proboscis :)

Great post but I'm not too fond of posting art without credit to the artist, so this is Burgess Shale Fauna (1989) by Carel Brest van Kempen, acrylic 15" x 20"
It's used here, used, for example, in a virtual exhibit with art that revolves around evolution and such, in 2013. It's really cool, and if u click the image, it turns into a poster w the creatures simply outlined and numbered. Below you can then read interesting facts about every single critter!
Click on the orange text over the image when in the website to swap back to the original painting .
