I'd love to hear about this SamBucky swing dance AU!!

Ask and ye shall receive!

Right, so I started this when I was having a Marvel re-watch phase, mainly for Loki and Bucky content. I first thought of maybe writing a fic set in the 40's simply because I wanted to write about Sam and Bucky swing dancing but setting it in the 40's didn't feel quite right because of the war and attitude towards queer people in that time. SO! I decided, fuck it, lets set it in modern times. Bucky dances and teaches Lindy Hop (1940s swing dancing with the crazy lifts and fancy footwork) in his mom's studio in Brooklyn while Sam teaches West Coast Swing (a more modern version with more turns than lifts that can be danced to a lot of contemporary pop songs) at the VA in Harlem. They meet at Steve's wedding to Peggie and do not get along AT ALL. Poor Bucky is a little bit heartbroken because his best friend and long-time crush has gotten married and is moving to London while Bucky is expected to be totally okay with this and go back to their empty Brooklyn apartment. Sam and Steve served together in Afghanistan with the rest of the Avengers as a special ops team. In this version, Bucky didn't sign up for the army but instead pursued a career in dance and teaching. He loses his arm in a plane crash instead when heading back home from the wedding, which puts his dance career on indefinite hold. That's sort of the intro of the fic, the rest of which is set six months after Bucky loses his arm. He's busy training Peter and MJ (who are friends and dance partners) for a big Lindy Hop competition while Sam is still working at the VA. Steve asks Sam to check in on Bucky because he's been radio silent and he's worried about him which is what sort of kicks off the whole them reuniting and becoming begrudging friends (and later something more).

I definitely do want to finish this because I have at least 1/3 written and the rest planned out, plus I've found some amazing dance videos that I think really represent Bucky and Sam's dance styles well. Though I don't know when I'll get around to finishing this smh. But if you're interested in reading a snippet you can find it below the cut:

Immediately, several videos pop up, all featuring Bucky’s nickname in the title with an array of dance partners. They range from choreographed routines at competitions to workshops and dance camps with improvised dances. One in particular draws Sam’s eyes though.

Sensual Same-Sex Swing Routine - Bucky and Steve

He’s clicking it before he even registers he’s doing it, the video taking a second to load. It looks to be a festival setting, more relaxed with a square dance space surrounded by a crowd of people sitting on the floor or on makeshift seats. Behind is a stage with a few stray musicians taking a break, to the left a large upright banner stating this is the Lindylicious Swing Dance festival in Paris of all places. And there in the center of the dance floor is a much younger looking Bucky and Steve. They can’t be older than twenty or twenty one, so it must have been just before Steve shipped out to the army. They’re both dressed up in slacks and shirts befitting of the 1940s, Bucky in classical black while Steve’s wearing a baby blue polo that brings out his eyes. Steve’s got on a pair of white and brown leather saddle shoes while Bucky’s got a pair of black loafers with blood red socks, the only pop of colour in his outfit. His hair is shorter here, like it had been at the wedding, styled with a bit of gel to get more of a greaser look.

He and Steve stand whispering quietly between themselves before the music starts, Steve’s head tilting back with a laugh before the two start to sway to the sensual swing beat. It’s a lot slower paced compared to MJ and Peter’s routine, made for footwork and turns more than aerial tricks.

With a playful crook of his finger, Bucky invites Steve to dance, the two sliding across the distance between them to meet in the middle in a close, intimate hold. The crowd ooo’s with more than a few giggles in-between. They sway for a bit, Steve lazily swinging in and out, following Bucky’s lead without any trouble. Suddenly, the drum halts, giving space for a burst of horn, and Steve and Bucky shake it out much to the crowd’s whooping delight before shuffling back together.  A deep voice croons about what all a couple can get up to when the lights go out, and Steve and Bucky must be familiar with the song as they play up to the beats and lyrics. Sam can see the playfulness from MJ and Peter’s routine echoed here, Bucky pretending to melt to the floor, hot and bothered, as Steve walks ahead of him in time to the beat.

They make a fantastic pair, feeding off each other and moving so in sync while still having a casual easiness about them that makes it feel like it’s all improvised, like they’re just that damn good. And maybe they are.  

At one point they’re entirely wrapped around one another, Bucky having slid up to Steve’s side and twirled him so they’re chest to chest, thighs woven and hips swaying. Steve’s back is to the camera but Bucky’s face is clear to see and—oh.

Oh.

His face is tucked into the crook of Steve’s neck, attempting to hide what now Sam can clearly see is a besotted smile that has absolutely nothing to do with the characters they’re playing for the dance.

“Oh, Buck…” he murmurs as he watches the dance continue to unfold, Bucky’s adoration out there for all to see, including Steve, and they don’t even know it, thinking it’s all an act just for the fun of the dance.

It’s so damn obvious, Bucky standing with his chest to Steve’s back, arms wrapped tight around him, the two stepping together like a pair of lovebirds out on a walk. That smile, the softness of his eyes, the way he squeezes Steve just a little closer before stepping away. How the hell did no one see it? How did Steve never see it?

Sam’s shot back to that night at the reception, him and Bucky watching Steve and Peggy do a sensual West Coast Swing routine that Sam had helped choreograph, that he’d boasted about, all the while Bucky stood there still as a statue, quietly dying inside as his best friend, his dance partner, the man he loved, replaces him with someone new.

Fuck, Sam’s an idiot. No wonder Bucky was acting off, no wonder he’d dropped his smile as soon as Steve wasn’t looking. No wonder he’d stormed off when Sam suggested a dance. It was probably the final nail in the coffin, the final snip to the withering tether of his sanity that night. And Sam had played a role in snapping it.

stop absolutely 😭 if i had any motivation to write i would write this (maybe i will write this?) since i didn't know what type of greaser you were talking about (50s-60s american subculture or the outsiders kind), i did both!

PERSONALITIES:

i've just done some research on greaser culture and this would actually suit aizawa perfectly according to my headcanons - did you tailor this post for me op?? in my mind, aizawa's half african-american - right? he probably grew up on the whole "you stick with your own, you are loyal to your own and you would do anything for your group" sort of mentality. this applies whether you are talking about the 50s-60s greaser variety OR the outsiders greaser variety - both of which are similar but not quite. i think it works either way.

to fit ide into this, he pretty much follows aizawa wherever he goes like a lost puppy and doesn't care much for people. when i think of ide's characterisation, i think solely of @zaney-hacknslash 's characterisation of him. if you read zaney's death note fics, even briefly (because they are very long, reading them is an all-day sort of event) you'll kind of see what i'm talking about. ide suits this greaser subculture very well, because he's loyal to his group (i.e. Aizawa) and doesn't care too much for the world outside of what is significant to him. he doesn't even care too much about his job.

AND YES YES GROUPIE MATSUDA >>>>

he just thinks they're real neat. aizawa and ide are cool, they're broke and they spend more time being a public nuisance at the cinema than doing anything else really but matsuda just thinks they're awesome.

to me, this could work platonically, romantically, sexually, or found family. this really is a great concept and i love it so so much.

POTENTIAL AUS:

groupie!Matsuda in the NPA, criminal greasers Aizawa&Ide: in this au, matsuda would keep getting any cases they may be involved in (perpetrator or not) and letting them slide. at first it's unintentional but as he interviews them more and more, he lets them get away with so much more than they deserve. aizawa and ide have no idea how 'luck' is on their side every fucking time but they're pretty grateful for it.

they also think that the smiley policeman who interviews them every time is actually pretty sweet - sweet enough to be protected by them, perhaps? matsuda's naivete is a significant part of his character in this au, as are the boys' lack of it. other criminals see him as a good target - but the boys aren't having any of it. matsuda is at first shocked, but then he just embraces it.

one day, aizawa and ide go to the station to pick up matsuda and take him to see a movie and soichiro is like "what are you thugs doing in these parts" then matsuda approaches and ide's just like "hey kid" and matsuda just grins and aizawa puts an arm around his shoulders. "we're seeing a movie!" matsuda grins, "thanks for letting me off early, chief!" and soichiro tries so many times to warn matsuda away from following and admiring the two but he ignores this every time.

in this same au, matsu is family-friends with the yagamis, he has been since he was a kid because their families got along. as matsu got older, they became more distant from his family but closer to him and he feels like they're on his side. but they keep warning him away from aizawa and ide, who are also on his side. why is that, he wonders?

high school au, outsiders au: aizawa and ide are kinda famous among the greasers, the same way bob was in the socs (the outsiders) and despite being a soc, matsu is really really attracted to them. obviously the age difference would be less in this au, and other characters would be sorted into greasers or socs. (e.g. light, matsuda, misa, takada and sayu are all socs. aizawa, ide, L, mikami, mello, matt & near are are all greasers.) things get complex realllll fast.

This AU is so good!

So the New Soul Greaser Gang is kind of based off the “Greasers” from The Outsiders, a 1983 film.  ((Its a good movie, I recommend watching it.))

The gang was put together by Alex and is made up of street kids; ones who lost their parents or who come from abusive homes.  Their usual places to hang are: Matteo’s cafe; an abandoned house; Elias’ place; Eyvindr’s place; and an old warehouse.

Rin and Canda are a part of the gang; Canda is kind of like a lost puppy, always following Alex, and Rin is a very energized teen, her cheerful disposition a great aid in letting new members feel welcome.

Though labeled as dirty troublemakers, the gang is comprised of some nice people; kind and caring and sort of like one big family.  They’re a bunch of dorks when you get to know them, but can get serious when necessary.

Alex constantly does gymnastic moves to show off to the gang; like a constant show on why she’s in charge.  She also likes to hang out at Hildon’s bar when she needs some space from the gang.

Elias runs a Carpenter’s shop just down the road from Wendy’s flower shop and Matteo’s cafe; its pretty hard to miss because of all the stray cats that hang out there.  He’s the ‘unofficial father’ of Alex’s gang, making sure they’re doing well and happy to let any member stay in his home in case of emergencies.

He also has some sleeve tattoos, courtesy of Kuzan’s tattoo parlor.

Eyvindr is still an inventor and has a workshop behind his home, but he’s constantly calling the local fire department; he’s on first name basis with the fire chief.  He’s that ‘crazy uncle’ figure toward’s Alex’s gang and asks them to go on errands for him, if he’s too busy; often paying them for their help.

He also can be found prattling on with Alex at Hildon’s bar around dusk.

Shale is still a doctor, one of best at the local hospital, and is always the go to man for Alex’s gang’s injuries.  Thankfully he doesn’t ask for payment and just usually tries to get them to promise to be careful... which they never do.

oh geez, i'm pretty satisfied with the siege fandom across here and twitter. but i suppose i can think of a few

more diversity. feels like i only see art and ships consisting of a lot of the original operators? i get that they've been out for awhile, but i just never see art of some ops. wamai, oryx, maestro, kaid, gridlock, mira, and alibi need more love, just to name a few

i wish artists and authors would explore more into different AUs. i know it's hard sometimes with what siege is, but a new take could be super interesting! doesn't always have to be canon compliant, could be a fantasy AU or something even more specific 1950's greaser AU soon cough

perhaps if the fandom was more interactive with each other, instead of seemingly friend groups just chilling. i think it'd be cool to talk to more people, but everyone seems to have already settled down and found their place. but that could also be me lacking decent social skills

Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?

i don't get super aggressive over headcanons, and let people do what they want. so i don't think i would go that far to defend it, but i've got a couple that i'm pretty set in stone with, and with implement them in as many pieces as i can.

oooh this question. there's a lot, and if we were talking about overall, i'd have to say Wrench from watch dogs 2. if we're keeping it in siege though, definitely Jackal. especially after his reworked bio

I haven’t yet used my modern and Neverland settings for Ace though I have plenty of thoughts about them and am eager to play with them. That being said, here’s a list of verses I consider coming up with once I have more ideas about how they could work or when someone is willing to work with them - whichever comes first/I feel better with.

other 20th century decades (I think of his modern!verse as being from the 90′s onwards). This includes a WWI setting where names of locations of the OP world replace those of real world nations out of respect and sensibility for a still recent past. Here, Ace is a “flying ace”, meaning a military aviator with expertise in aerial combat.

@pilawforhire also joke about a Greaser!AU but in reality a mid-century scenario would also be interesting.

Harry Potter because duh. Ace is a Gryffindor who is part of the Quidditch team as keeper. (I agree he has the strength of the arm required to be a beater but his built works in both positions and I’d rather have him as a keeper - though this could easily be changed if it works best with another character). Ace tends to doze off during classes, particularly during History of Magic.

18th century American whaling, largely derived from Melville’s novel, where Ace is a whaler from Nantucket.

other options I have to give way more thought about are Oz (of which I am more versed in the dark versions of Maguire and Paige than Baum’s original) and 18th century England in the setting of Jane Austen’s novels. I’m also considering other historical and mythological settings.

i was walking outside today and i had a thought that made me need to stop and clutch my chest. hear me out.

greaser au

chapel is a waitress at a drive-in diner and one day, some hot shot rolls up in their shiny red convertible and everyone’s looking like “who’s that?!” well, guess what. it’s uhura, looking absolutely badass in a leather jacket and sunglasses.

but chapel already knows it’s her and comes gliding out on her cute blue roller skates holding a tray with a milkshake–because uhura is not just her favorite regular of all time but also her girlfriend. she doesn’t need to even ask what she wants to order. :DDDD

after chapel’s shift is done, uhura picks her up and revs the engine and smokes all the greaser guys who think they could ever race her (HA!!! how silly they are). she drives up a hill overlooking their city and then they make out under the stars and hold hands and talk about nonsense things.

also, when chapel gets cold, uhura puts her jacket over her shoulders
