A Terrified Teacher At Ghoul School Episode 2 Review - Physical Exam Madness
Oh, I like this episode a lot more than the first one! It flowed so much better and the gags are a lot funnier! The entire first half mainly revolved around the students’ physical exams and how excruciating youkais can be when needed to be examined. The second half revolved around the aftermath of the physical exams and how Haruaki has to be punished for breaking the principal’s windows. It’s nice seeing Haruaki spending time with his fellow teachers and his students as well!
The episode introduces several new adult characters. We have fellow teachers Miki and Hatanaka. Miki is an ogre youkai and Hatanaka is a Kamaitachi, or a scythe weasel youkai. Miki is very chill while Hatanaka is very stern; he’s the one hounding Haruaki to do various tasks during the physical examinations like helping Nyuudou with his eye examination which consists of him having to call someone in Tokyo because of how far Nyuudou can see. Another one of his tasks is to gather Tamao and Maizuka as animal youkai need to have special injections conducted by Takahashi, a doctor specializing in youkai treatment. I’m not sure if he is a youkai himself, he probably is as this is a youkai island. Anyways, Takahashi is a freak and I love how he just has a giant syringe in tow. What the heck. Also, poor Nezumi and Hatanaka; they’re teachers but also had to get injections in their animal forms alongside Tamao and Maizuka. The last of the major tasks is to measure Oota, who is a Daidarabocchi, which is some kind of titan youkai. However, climbing Oota is a task in itself. This doesn’t make sense because why can’t he just ask Oota to lift him up? Then again, Sano was also climbing him, so I guess that’s normal for him? Anyways, the fact that climbing Oota is a feat in itself and that he’s 130 meters tall. Still, it makes no sense that Haruaki had to climb Oota when the second half revealed that he knows how to be human-sized. What the heck? Regardless, it was still funny with how Sano caught him by the ahoge and both Sano and Haruaki were blown away by Oota’s sneezing, which then caused them to crash into the principal’s office which then transitions to the second half of the episode. Like I said, this was a nice episode to help get to know the other teachers and more of the students.
The second half was hilarious too! As punishment for breaking the window, Haruaki and several of his students are sent to clean the school pool which has been abandoned for a while. The students didn’t even know they had a school pool. It makes sense because it’s filled with miasma-like substance. I wonder what’s in that water because when Hijita fell in, he got yassified the heck to the point of being unrecognizable. Miasma? More like Mi-yass-ma. Apparently, the pool is home to Kappa and a human faced fish Youkai. The kappas tried to kidnap Maizuka, which got him scared because he didn’t want to be yassified like Hijita, which then causes Sano to rescue him. This was the scariest Sano has been; he likes Maizuka’s small size. I do wonder what would happen if Maizuka ever became taller. Would he become devastated? The human-faced fish caught me by surprise because I didn’t expect that blob face on it at all. Fortunately, Oota was able to catch him. It turns out that the fish youkai is very weak-willed, as Haruaki pointed out. Unfortunately, Oota was standing in the miasma water, and it burned him, which caused him to fall backwards and destroy the area. Poor Haruaki, this caused his pay to get docked. Don’t worry, Hijita makes it out alive. I think the gags were a lot more hilarious in this episode because it’s not Haruaki being miserable this time; it’s the students being the the comedy this time.
The voice cast for the new characters are pretty interesting. Miki is voiced by Shun Horie. I usually associate him with young boys since his roles mainly consist of them like Aether from Genshin Impact and Amethio from Pokemon Horizons. It’s interesting to hear him do a Kansai accent. Hatanaka is voiced by Ryota Iwasaki, who voiced Hayato from The Yuzuki Family’s Four Sons who’s also a teacher, except that Hatanaka is a lot more stern. What surprised me the most was Takahashi being voiced by Shouta Aoi. I always associate him with cute roles as he’s usually typecasted into those roles, so for him to voice an adult and a rather sadistic one caught me off guard. He should voice more adults because the range is crazy. This was the guy who voiced Kumatte-chan from My New Boss Is Goofy. For the students, Tamao is voiced by Yuki Sakakibara, whom I’m not too familiar with but I did watch Ayaka which he was a supporting cast in. Nyuudou is voiced by Akira Takano, a new face. Oota is voiced by Reiji Kawashima, who you might know as Fushi from To Your Eternity. I also hear Sugita as one of the students and the kappa. It’s always super interesting to see who’s in the cast. The cast is mixed with veterans and new faces.
Because I liked this episode so much, I can’t wait to see what sort of antics Haruaki and his students will deal with. What I like about this anime so far is that the story isn’t just limited to Haruaki and his class, but it also involves the faculty too. It’s nice to see more adult characters and it’s nice to learn more about some of the newly introduced characters. Hopefully, Haruaki will be reunited with his lost school uniform catalogue. What are your thoughts on this episode?

🔵 Kodaka BlueSky Q&As: Misc Rain Code & Other Questions
⚠️ DISCLAIMER: Please be advised! Translations of all Japanese answers derive from a combination of Google Translate and my manager's three-quarters-remembered Japanese. We've tried our best to work out what he's saying, but there will be mistakes here and there. Do not take this as gospel!
To avoid spreading too much misinfo, where we're completely boggled about an answer, we've decided not to even make an attempt. We'll still list the post, but mark it accordingly.
💕 FEBRUARY 2024:
Q: While I'm at it, could you please tell me where to send fan mail for Rain Code and Danganronpa?
A: Please send it to Spike Chunsoft.
/////
Q: What's your favorite furikake?
A: The ashes of the dead.
NOTE: Furikake is a type of Japanese seasoning. Kodaka is a weird guy.
/////
Q: Is it okay to send a New Year's card to Too Kyo [Games] as a fan letter to you?
A: That's fine. I'll watch for it.
/////
Q: Can I send a birthday present for a character to the company?
A: Please send it to Spike Chunsoft!
/////
Q: Please tell us what games you've played! What movies and shows have you watched? What books, manga, and comics have you read? What media have you consumed?Please tell us! We want to know what are your inspirations. I don't know what media I should consume. And we all want to know more about you!
A: I am inspired by all kinds of games, comics, novels and movies. I used to work part-time in a video game store. I love Tarantino.
/////
Q: Do you have a favorite line or phrase from Danganronpa or Rain Code?
A: When I search for "Danganronpa quotes" and look back at the lines that come up, I think, "This is a great line!" For Rain Code, it's any line that Shinigami-chan says that helps Yuma get back on his feet!
/////
Q: Sorry for the second question! I have a lot of questions about Rain Code, but I'm hesitant to ask them here because it would be a total spoiler for the main story... I'd love to have the opportunity someday to ask questions with full spoilers OK. Are there any plans for that at the moment?
A: That sounds great. I'd love to do it. But I don't think I'd be able to reveal spoilers openly unless it's a real event.
/////
Q: Excuse me for the second question!! Previously, there was a Danganronpa collaboration with Identity V, but are there plans for a Rain Code collaboration...!!!!!
A: We would really appreciate it if you could send a persistent message to Identity V!
/////
Q: I'm sorry it's not Danganronpa or Raincode... I love both series, and I'm really looking forward to the release of Tribe Nine. I have a question about Tribe Nine. Sonoda from the Oota Tribe could kill Haneda at any time, even though he has murderous intent towards him, so why does he keep him alive by just beating him up until he's on the verge of death? Also, why is Sonoda the only one who is a little better dressed (in a suit and tie) than the other members?
A: When it comes to Tribe Nine, to be honest, Akatsuki has a much higher weight than Too Kyo Games, so only Akatsuki can answer that question...!
NOTE: Akatsuki is the company publishing the upcoming Tribe Nine game.
/////
Q: Are there any other Rain Code characters besides Dr. Robot that are favorites of Mr. Komatsuzaki? Also, I would like to know more about Mr. Komatsuzaki and would like to see more media exposure for him.
A: Basically, I think they are all my favorites. I'm very particular about it, and I've made many drafts over the years. But I'm sure ramen store owners would love him [Akira].
NOTE: We're pretty sure "Dr. Robot" is the character listed as "Akira" in the credits, but we're not 100% certain. Also, Komatsuzaki is the artist behind Danganronpa and Rain Code.
/////
Q: What is your favorite foreign movie?
A: Tarantino!!
/////
Q: Is there ever a character that you liked so much that you thought it would be a shame to kill them off, but you still ended up killing them anyway?
A: On one hand, I want to get to know them better. If the character isn't well-defined enough to the point where I want to get to know him or her better, there's no point in letting him or her die… So, I let them die while wishing I could depict more of them.
/////
Q: Mr Kodaka, can I please ask another question? Persona 3 RELOAD came out recently. Have you played it yet? Did you play the original Persona 3, including Persona 3 FES and Persona 3 Portable? Have you played all of the Persona games, including the spinoffs? Are you a fan of the Persona series?
A: i have played all the persona series, from 1 to 5. I haven't played any of the spin-offs though, I'm waiting for the release of 6.
🍀 MARCH 2024:
Q: How did you and Mr. Komatsuzaki meet and start working together?
A: We met in the smoking area at work.
/////
Q: Please tell me how to cook delicious rice🍚
A: Mannan rice is great for dieting.
NOTE: Mannan rice is a (usually) microwavable kind of rice that's part konjac (you know, the thing Kirumi has trouble cutting). It's low-calorie. The joke here is probably that Kodaka doesn't cook, he makes things in the microwave. Relatable, really.
/////
Q: What are your favorite indie games? Have any indie games inspired and/or influenced your own games and works? If so, what are those indie games that inspired you as a creator? Are there any indie games that you recommend we should play? Or what indie games should more people play in general? 🙏 🙏 🙏
A: If Hotline Miami is an indie game, it is Hotline Miami. I love it the best.
/////
Q: Can I please ask another question?🙏 I really enjoyed watching Akudama Drive, so I would like to see the concept art and character and setting materials, but I don't know where to find them. I especially want to see drawings by Rui Komatsuzaki, Cindy H. YAMAUCHI and the staff. Is there a book? 📖
A: The artwork for Akdamadrive has not been released. Maybe not much is made in the case of the animation. Please submit a request to Studio Piero for Komatsuzaki and Cindy's designs, as well as Kansai's designs, which are awesome!
/////
Q: i'll ask another! piggybacking off another question on here, what games have you been playing recently? what games are you excited for coming out in the future?
A: I've been too busy lately to play games. I want to play cruel games.
/////
Q: I love games with interesting stories like Danganronpa and Raincode, but Mr. Kodaka, who writes the scenarios for such interesting games, is there a game whose story you thought "this wowed me!"?
A: Resident Evil Code Veronica, FF7, and Killer 7 are fun. When I first played Persona 3, I thought that Megaten [Megami Tensei] killed it.
/////
Q: if you had a forte which would you want to have? i want to have desuhiko’s disguise
A: me too!!!!!!
🥬 APRIL 2024:
n/a
🌺 MAY 2024:
Q: Are there any plans to make a Happy Rain Code where the train incident never happened?
A: I'm sure Melami would solve the first clock tower case. No, she won't wear those clothes…
NOTE: A reference to the flashy clothes you find in Melami's room during the first case.
/////
Q: Mr. Kodaka, you often respond to illustrations drawn by your fans on Twitter, but do you also watch the hand-drawn videos that your fans post on YouTube?
A: I don't watch YouTube because it takes a long time. I can see the pictures right away [on Twitter], so I just respond to the pictures and hope that people who like them will follow me.
/////
Q: Which do you prefer, liberal arts girls or science girls?
A: I like both!
/////
Q: Was Mr. Kodaka a super high school level film director when he was in high school?
A: During my time at university and as a part-time worker afterwards, I was a really low-achieving film director.
☀️ JUNE 2024:
Q: I have a question about the world of Rain Code. I heard that there are about 1000 super detectives in the world of Rain Code, but are there detectives with the same abilities and titles?
A: There are similarities, but no exact matches.
/////
Q: Regarding Raincode's special detective abilities. In the story, it was stated that if one acquired special detective abilities during his two-year training period, one would be registered as a super detective. If one were to express an ability that could be considered a special detective ability while working as a regular detective, would one be re-registered as a super detective?
A: Abilities often depend on innate talent, but that's a possibility.
/////
Q: Is it decided how old the characters in works such as Danganronpa and Raincode are? If so, how old are they?
A: Of course, Danganronpa is mostly in their teens. Raincode has a wide range, but even Yakou is in his 30s.
NOTE: This is kind-of hilarious, because I'm pretty sure it's canonically stated Yakou is actually in his late 20s...in something that Kodaka himself wrote. I'll have to go find evidence.
/////
Q: Why do you have so many cats in your work?
A: Because Komatsuzaki likes cats. I like dogs.
NOTE: Komatsuzaki is Kodaka's usual artist. He's worked on Danganronpa, Rain Code, and the upcoming The Hundred Line.
/////
Q: There have been various spinoffs for Raincode and Danganronpa, but can we assume that the interpretations and character settings discussed in these spinoffs are official?
A: I'm not sure about the official take [from Spikechun], but if you enjoy it, enjoy it, and if you don't want to accept it, don't accept it. I think it's all up to the player's freedom.
NOTE: By "spinoff," this probably means the anthology mangas, light novels, audio dramas, etc.
🎇 JULY 2024:
Q: Do Rain Code and Danganronpa take place in the same world? Do any of your games and works have a shared universe with another? Or are they all separate? 🤔 💭 I'm asking because I just had a dream about Rain Code today!
A: I won't make a clear statement. I am not sure what will happen in the future. Anyway, please spread the Rain Code around the world.
/////
Q: Can I change my clothes before changing into the Final Defense Academy uniform in Hundred Line? I like the original clothes because they are so unique... Or do you wear uniforms only during battles?
A: We'll give you more details later, but they usually wear casual clothes and change into their uniforms when they fight!
NOTE: I'll start a Hundred Line section when the game comes out next year. For now, I'll put Hundred Line questions in here or in Game Development.
🌭 AUG 2024:
Q: What percentage of people in the world of Rain Code have special abilities? I wonder if most people have the ability to do something like "ordinary psychometry" like Halara did in the past.
A: No, it's still rare. I guess it's about as rare as Devil Fruit users.
🍁 SEPT 2024:
Q: The specific ages of most of the characters in Danganronpa and Rain Code have not been revealed, but is there a reason for this?
A: I thought age was an unnecessary filter.

Pîtâ in Funeral Parade of Roses (Toshio Matsumoto, 1969) Cast: Pîtâ, Osamu Ogasawara, Yoshio Tsuchiya, Toyosaburo Uchiyama, Don Madrid, Emiko Azuma, Yoshimi Jo, Koichi Nakamura, Flamenco Umeji, Saako Oota, Taro Manji, Mikio Shibayama, Wataru Hikonagi, Fuchisumi Gomi, Chieko Kobayashi, Yo Sato, Keiichi Takanaga. Screenplay: Toshio Matsumoto. Cinematography: Tatsuo Suzuki. Art direction: Setsu Asakura. Film editing: Toshie Iwasa. Music: Joji Yuasa. Toshio Matsumoto's Funeral Parade of Roses both participates in and parodies the late-1960s avant-garde "underground" film movement, with its reliance on eccentric cuts and random inserts. There's a scene in which the filmmakers are shooting a badly tuned television set, and keep fiddling with the set to get the kind of distorted image they want. And at one point someone quotes the avant-garde filmmaker Jonas Mekas -- and then gets his name wrong, calling him "Menas Jokas." Matsumoto's film keeps the viewer off-balance at all times, moving in and out of what we take to be "reality" to expose that it's all moviemaking. There is, for example, a scene in which the cross-dressing protagonist, Eddie ( Pîtâ), and a Black man, Tony (Don Madrid), seem to be having sex, with lots of pornographic gasping and facial contortions. But then the camera angle shifts and we see that there's a camera crew surrounding the bed where Tony is propped up by himself on the headboard while the camera is focused on the face of Eddie, simulating ecstasy. Even the main story of the film gets its distancing when we cut to the actor who plays Eddie, Pîtâ (or Peter, as the English language screen credits have it), being interviewed about the role he's playing. It's much like his own life, he says, except for the incest part. At this point in the film, we don't know about the incest part, which precipitates the crisis in Eddie's life. Suffice it to say that Matsumoto based a large part of the film on Oedipus Rex. The central story deals with the rivalry between Eddie and Leda (Osamu Ogasawara), the "Madame" of a club that caters to salarymen who want to sleep with gei boi, for the affections of Gonda (Yoshio Tsuchiya), a man who turns out to have more significance in Eddie's life than is at first apparent. There are some longueurs in Matsumoto's film, mostly having to do with the avant-garde sequences but also with a too-long drugged-out orgy scene. (Other people's orgies are invariably boring.) But there are some genuine shocks and some real emotion in the film, and the performance by Pîtâ -- best known as the androgynous Kyoami, the analogue to the Fool in Ran (1985), Akira Kurosawa's reworking of King Lear -- is outstanding.

These two friends share a similar secret and find solace in one another; however, their lives become even more complicated when they must tread the unfamiliar waters of a new school, attempt to make new friends, and struggle to maintain old ones. Faced with nearly insurmountable odds, they must learn to deal with the harsh realities of growing up, transexuality, relationships, and acceptance.

Hikaru's emotions are frivolous, pure, and direct causing Rihito to hesitate at first, but he gradually opens his heart. As the time to start thinking about their futures approaches, what do these young men find as they try to move forward...”

At about the same time, she reconnects with her best friend from ten years ago, Akira Okudaira, who is now attending Fujigatani Girls' Academy as a first-year high school student. As they reconnect, they both deal with their own respective romantic problems, and help each other get through them.”
cardcaptor sakura (1998)
“Sakura Kinomoto is your garden-variety ten-year-old fourth grader, until one day, she stumbles upon a mysterious book containing a set of cards. Unfortunately, she has little time to divine what the cards mean because she accidentally stirs up a magical gust of wind and unintentionally scatters the cards all over the world. Suddenly awakened from the book, the Beast of the Seal, Keroberos (nicknamed Kero-chan), tells Sakura that she has released the mystical Clow Cards created by the sorcerer Clow Reed. The Cards are no ordinary playthings. Each of them possesses incredible powers, and because they like acting independently, Clow sealed all the Cards within a book. Now that the Cards are set free, they pose a grave danger upon the world, and it is up to Sakura to prevent the Cards from causing a catastrophe!
Appointing Sakura the title of "the Cardcaptor" and granting her the Sealed Key, Keroberos tasks her with finding and recapturing all the Cards. Alongside her best friend Tomoyo Daidouji, and with Kero-chan's guidance, Sakura must learn to balance her new secret duty with the everyday troubles of a young girl involving love, family, and school, all while she takes flight on her magical adventures as Sakura the Cardcaptor.”
Tanaka-kun is always listless (2016)
“For high school student Tanaka, the act of being listless is a way of life. Known for his inattentiveness and ability to fall asleep anywhere, Tanaka prays that each day will be as uneventful as the last, seeking to preserve his lazy lifestyle however he can by avoiding situations that require him to exert himself. Along with his dependable friend Oota who helps him with tasks he is unable to accomplish, the lethargic teenager constantly deals with events that prevent him from experiencing the quiet and peaceful days he longs for.”
bloom into you (2018)
“Yuu Koito has always been entranced with romantic shoujo manga and the lyrics of love songs. She patiently waits for the wings of love to sprout and send her heart aflutter on the day that she finally receives a confession. Yet, when her classmate from junior high declares his love for her during their graduation, she feels unexpectedly hollow. The realization hits her: she understands romance as a concept, but she is incapable of experiencing the feeling first-hand.
Now, having enrolled in high school, Yuu, disconcerted and dispirited, is still ruminating over how to respond to her suitor. There, she happens upon the seemingly flawless student council president, Touko Nanami, maturely rejecting a confession of her own. Stirred by Touko's elegant manner, Yuu approaches her for advice, only to be bewildered when the president confesses to her! Yuu quickly finds herself in the palm of Touko's hand, and unknowingly sets herself on a path to find the emotion which has long eluded her.”
No.6 (2011)
“Many years ago, after the end of a bloody world war, mankind took shelter in six city-states that were peaceful and perfect... at least on the surface. However, Shion—an elite resident of the city-state No. 6—gained a new perspective on the world he lives in, thanks to a chance encounter with a mysterious boy, Nezumi. Nezumi turned out to be just one of many who lived in the desolate wasteland beyond the walls of the supposed utopia. But despite knowing that the other boy was a fugitive, Shion decided to take him in for the night and protect him, which resulted in drastic consequences: because of his actions, Shion and his mother lost their status as elites and were relocated elsewhere, and the darker side of the city began to make itself known.
Now, a long time after their life-altering first meeting, Shion and Nezumi are finally brought together once again—the former elite and the boy on the run are about to embark on an adventure that will, in time, reveal the shattering secrets of No. 6.”

Voltage’s writers really are going to just insist on stubbornly ignoring Nobunaga’s connection to Kouka, are they? The only thing actually known about this Ban fellow in “history” (or at least folklore) is that he’s an Oda vassal, but the game turned him into a... ninja supremacist?
伴長信 Ban Naganobu was usually identified as a member of the “53 great clans” of Kouka. They were believed to have been an offshoot of the noble clan Ootomou 大伴, and ”Ban" 伴 can also be read as “Tomou”. The clan fizzled out of prominence in the 900s, and then split apart into different families.
Despite being a famous name, concrete info about "Ban/Tomou Naganobu” as a person is very hard to find. At best, there’s only brief mentions that “he existed”. The only substantial info I could find was that he was one of the vassals who defended Nobunaga at Honnouji and perished there.
As you can tell “Naganobu” is Nobunaga reversed, both in kanji and pronounciation, so I’m actually not entirely convinced that this was a real person’s name. In the linked post, I had mentioned that the Ban were related to the Takigawa. However, researcher Oota Akira 太田亮 believed that the “Ban/Tomou” clan of Kouka changed their surnames to “Takigawa”, and so they’re actually the same entity.
Iga and Kouka "unification” is... not exactly impossible. I mentioned too that the two regions were actually friendly with each other. The image of them being enemies were just dramatization in pop culture and fiction. At any rate. Is this unification talk meant to be a jab at the Naganobu/Nobunaga worldplay? ”Nobunaga” wants to unify the samurai, “Naganobu” wants to unify the ninja. That might actually be clever if it was true.
Incidentally, the person who in history/folklore has a shady reputation having a connection with both Iga and Kouka was actually Fujibayashi Nagato no Kami (Sakuya and Genya’s father in-game). He controls men and territory in both Iga and Kouka regions, and eventually escaped the Iga purge through his Kouka connections. But again, in this game Nobunaga’s influence and association with Kouka seems to be non-existent, so I suppose the writers just ignored that.
