Something I noticed in undergrOund idOl and seOul drift is that first meetings, and specifically first eye contact, seem to be very important, and it almost feels like they're recognising something familiar in each other. At first I thought that those longing looks and widened eyes were just a way to show that they're instantly attracted to each other, but some of those first interactions seem way too emotionally loaded for that, especially kyujung in seOul drift - it seems like they're seeing each other for the first time, but also like they were searching for each other, and once they see one another, they instantly know this is the person they've been driving/waiting for.

I was reading the lyrics to candy bOmb, and in the middle of a fun beat and lyrics about instant attraction there's the sudden, more thoughtful and distorted bridge and the line "I can't figure out who it is, I might've left you behind".

It seems like they're connected in every alternate universe, they know each other in libidO and skinz (we never see their first meetings there), so there's recognition when they first meet in the solos, and once again in seOul drift.

Here's where it gets really interesting. From savanna to asOiaf, none of the MVs feel like they're taking place in the real world. Starting from where the units first appear, libidO is the only MV that doesn't take place in Seoul but on an island, in a kind of summer paradise. skinz has both Seoul and the seaside. Since begin to seOul drift, we have been only in Seoul. With each era, we seem to come out of the metaphorical space of the subconscious and into the real world in which these stories have been taking place. To the surface, if you will.

The description says that "loneliness and wandering are sped up to the verge of hallucination and to their very limit, and raced to the extent that they can no longer keep up and get exhausted". I'm having a lot of trouble deciphering this, but considering how important driving vehicles is in their MVs, they've been trying to get to the verge of this hallucination since savanna. The hallucination keeps resetting and separating them, but they keep racing along their own path on instinct and eventually stumble across someone they feel they've been missing from their life, whose lack of presence by their side ignited their loneliness.

This makes more sense if you watched the part of my theory about the role of technology in their MVs and the meaning of delusion in skinz. Delusion and hallucination can easily be used interchangeably in this metaphor, which, in the case of my interpretation, means that societal norms create our reality and distort it to be something untrue to our nature.

Societal pressure forces them apart, but their instincts are stronger, so in the end, they always find their way back to each other. Just like no matter how hard societal norms try to suppress queerness, it always comes up to the surface, whether within an individual or in society at large.

You had three projects open on your computer, bouncing back and forth between them as your brain went wild with ideas. You were a little annoyed that no one seemed to mash WayV with anything else, and had seen several comments saying it was because it’s in Chinese; as if Korean music doesn’t have English in it all the time. You had also wanted to mash an OnlyOneOf song with something else, and you had a couple songs by ‘nugu’ groups that you wanted to mash with songs by bigger groups, because you felt they deserved the exposure; maybe… Trigger by Craxy with Paint the Town by Loona? You were still deciding. Or maybe even a ‘nugu’ mega mashup at some point, to show all the people who only listen to groups from the big four that other groups actually exist, and just because something comes from a popular company, doesn’t mean it’s good. Then you could do a girl group one and a boy group one, and that’d be two videos and twice the amount of groups you could turn people on to. You leaned over to the open notepad on your desk and jotted down the idea, before putting your headphones back on and getting back to work.

Hours later, your ears ached from listening to so much, and each of the three projects were at various percentages of ‘almost done’. You saved them all, just to be safe, even though you were still technically working on them.

Technically because you remembered that a bassist whose videos you liked was supposed to have a video premier today where he reviewed some new basses he got. Since you were going to have more money soon it certainly couldn’t hurt to watch and start deciding what you’d be interested in buying. It definitely couldn’t hurt. Well, your bank account might hurt a little bit… but your ears wouldn’t, as you pulled the headphone plug out of the jack and took them off.

You looked down at your phone and navigated to the delivery app for the fried chicken place near you and ordered. If you were going to take a break you might as well eat as well, you had worked through lunch and were starving. 

Chicken ordered, you opened Youtube and before you could click on the ‘Subscriptions’ button, you noticed a video titled ‘Creepypastas in Among Us??’ which had the little Among Us bean-looking guys-- which you only knew because there were all over your recommended page a few years back. People still played that? One had a black suit with… long arms? And another had a weird, totally white face with big eyes? You didn’t understand what any of it meant, but one was circled and another had a red arrow pointing at it for reasons you couldn’t discern. There was nothing that seemed out of the ordinary to you…  unless it was just because you didn’t understand what you were looking at. Your knowledge of Among Us was almost nil, knowing as much as you could from seeing thumbnails of it all over the home page, back when everyone was playing it. At least it was better than seeing screaming faces of streamers next to weird animatronics when everyone was playing that… teddy bear pizza game? Whatever it was called.

But the buzz had died down a while ago. And you didn’t even watch Let’s Plays, why was this being recommended to you? You hovered the cursor over the vertical three dots, and clicked on the ‘Not Interested’ button.

You scrolled for a couple seconds, to see one titled ‘Jay Why Pee cracks??’ where the thumbnail was a still from his ‘wae geureonji molla’ performance, but photoshopped with laughing emojis around his head. Another was titled ‘The Lost Art of RPG Maker Games’, you weren’t even sure what that was. Yet another was titled ‘Cat being ashamed of things she says for 5 minutes and 48 seconds’, with a thumbnail of who looked like Keeho from JUPiTER laughing, and the word ‘SCREEP’ in red font, as if he was laughing at it. You were pretty sure you had heard that he was also a streamer, but you had no idea what ‘SCREEP’ was…

You opened the three dots menu for the video and told Youtube not to recommend such things.

You didn’t care to know. You’d never understand the gaming community.

Your phone vibrated and you were startled by it. You open it to see what the notification was, and saw it was an email. A bandcamp artist notification. You squinted at the tiny font in the notification bar to see who it was.

HALA.

They’ve dropped a new album.

You clicked on the notification and it took literally two million years to open, and then when the email opened your eyes perceived it for as long as it took to discern where  you needed to press the screen to make the page open, and you were looking at it.

You had been listening to them for forever, and no matter how long you did, each album drop was a surprise. Only HALA could get away with such shit. You checked the track listing, real quick:

You didn’t know how to pronounce the names in the group of three and you didn’t care. You also couldn’t believe they were up to twenty-three albums already. You wished you could be that productive. To think that this person - who no one knew who they were - could be about the same age as you. It was wild. 

But whatever. You didn’t care how exhausted your ears felt, you had to listen to it.

You grabbed your headphones with the longest cord and plugged it into your computer, pressed play on the first track, and laid down on your bed, eyes closed, so you could devote all your attention to it.

Random Idol Reactions to the Dentist Appointment

(Non-Tarot)

Disclaimer:

All the described reactions are pure fiction and my own speculation and they are intentionally exaggerated to make it more fun to read. Please, do not take any of it seriously. 

There people walking among us who fear the dentist beyond anything else in the world. They will avoid sitting into the dentist chair unless the pain forces them to make an appointment. 

And then there are normal people like me who love to go to the dentist and diligently visit his office every 6 months to have the preventive check done. And don't let me start on the bliss of dental hygiene procedure. Well... I truly like to have my teeth taken care of by professionals. 

But what about our lovely and cute idols? How do they react to dentist appointment? 

Let's find out! 

Dongwoo (Infinite) 

Dongwoo finds the dentist appointment a waste of time. He takes a good care of his teeth and doesn't need the dentist to tell him what he already knows. Dongwoo isn't the type to sit in the waiting room reading the outdated magazines there, he always brings a thick book with him and would gladly read it even while the dentist has their hands in his mouth if it was possible. Once the check is over, Dongwoo sets a reminder to his phone for next appointment. 

Level of will to go to the appointment: 3/10

Minhyuk (Monsta X) 

Minhyuk makes a scene before going to the dentist, he screams and runs around describing all the terror he could possibly encounter in the dentist chair. He will insist on the fact no dentist appointment is needed and will postpone the meeting like 5x before he is forced by someone stronger than him (Shownu or Wonho) who will  drag him into the dentist office kicking and screaming like a big baby. The dentist hates him, because Minhyuk refuses to open mouth wide and when he does, he bites. After a little wrestle the check is finished, Minhyuk insists on getting a lolly and he leaves the dentist fast. 

Level of will to go to the appointment: 1/10

Donghae (Super Junior) 

For Donghae the dentist appointment is one of the necessary evil in life. The kind of suffering all human beings has to go through. He accepts the dentist appointment with resignation, he comes on time, sits in the chair and obeys all instructions hoping for it to be over soon. Deep down he believes that women must feel the same about gynecologist appointments. Once the check is over, Donghae will take a sticky note with the date and time of next appointment which he will lose a week later. 

Level of will to go to the appointment: 5/10

Taecyeon (2PM) 

Taecyeon coming for a dentist appointment is a big thing. All the nurses and assistants are there, no matter whether it is their shift that day or not. Taecyeon arrives with cute smile and small presents for the staff, spreading good mood and compliments left and right. The female staff is swooning from his presence and he knows it. Taecyeon cracks double meaning jokes till the dentist instructs him to open wide. And when he can't talk, he at least winks at the nurses. Once the check is over, he leaves the office with next appointment and several new phone numbers saved in his phone. 

Level of will to go to the appointment: 7/10

Love (former OnlyOneOf) 

Love loves to eat and he knows he need good healthy teeth for that. He looks forward to his regular preventive checks, he arrives at least 10 minutes earlier to the waiting room, he gathers all the free-to-take brochures about how to maintain your teeth, gums and mouth healthy. Once he is invited to the dentist's office he begins a conversation, he knows all about his dentist's family life, the names of his children, he knows what kind evening classes their mother attends and what is the favourite TV show of their aunt. This applies to the assistant, too. Love sits in the chair relaxed while his dentist keeps the conversation going and Love answers with unarticulated noises. Once the check is over, Love sets a reminder of next appointment in his phone and he also notes it down in his calendar at home. 

Level of will to go to the appointment: 10/10

Yeah I take all of this back, doesn't really make sense with the other lyrics. It's definitely not a happy song, but it seems to come just from the fact that he's afraid to face the world on his own, so the comparison to off angel in my previous post still stands. The references to chrOme hearts and byredO stump me a little bit, but if we take into account that both of those songs are about unhealthy relationships, nabi would capture the feeling of missing the presence by your side once the person realises they can spread their wings and leave

This might be a huge reach, but I find it curious that in nabi, the pronouns switch from she to you in the English lines:

She left the perfume from the moment // Can't take my eyes away // When I look into your eyes

The following Korean lyrics are:

It feels like I'm drunk, if only I could stop the world as it is, I wouldn't be afraid

It kind of makes me think that the she and you could be different people and it would indicate that one of the lovers cheated. Again, seeing as it references chrOme hearts in the first line, which is very up and down/hot and cold, it wouldn't surprise me if one of them had enough, maybe even used it to fuel jealousy in some twisted attempt to make their relationship stronger. It seems like the person singing is the one who cheated and he regrets it, because now he's forced to face change when he's being left alone.

Their discussion of No More Perfume on You in exchange member directed me to this line of thought, but other than that one verse, the song doesn't seem very regretful, more just longing and not wanting to let go, so it's more likely not the case.

I don’t know if you’re already aware of them but I came across a group called TAN with their debut song du du du (they were formed out of a show called extreme debut:wild idol). I’m OBSESSED with the song for some reason and wanted your thoughts on the music video.

tan my second gen flop group reject beloveds......... you're obsessed with the song bc it's fucking GOOD that's why!!!! also i was not kidding they are hardcore channelling second gen with everything they've fucking got: from the song itself (r&b is decidedly not on trend rn) to the fact that the mv was filmed with $12 but they refused to use any location filming that would smooth out the rough edges to the prop based choreo to the STYLING!!!!!!!!! it is absolutely not reflected in the mv at all but all their music show stages are based around this black/white/gradiant duality styling that is soooooooooooooooo 'we have $8 and some pocket lint and a stray safety pin but by god we're gonna make this work' of second gen like my eyes blew out of my head every new stage i watched. like look at this!:

if someone had told me that was from 120322 instead of from 220312 i would have wholecloth believed them. the only thing that gives them away is that there isn't enough eyeliner. the ONLY thing. and i'm not even joking this is not at all a one off, this was a dedicated intentional choice that they upheld for their ENTIRE promo period:

but by far my favourite is 220326 music core where they have GRADIENT TUXEDOS!!!!!!! actually my other favourite is this gradient pink inkigayo stage, because obviously. it would have been so easy for their stylists to just slap some generic fourth gen type normal clothes on them (which to an extent they did do in the mv), but instead they really dug into this old style coordinating + themed outfits. the mv struggles a bit because there are a lot of ideas happening but see also aforementioned budget of $12. obviously companies wanna put out something big for a debut mv so i don't fault them there but i think they should have encorporated more of the opposites theme of the styling+choreo into the visuals of them mv itself. they could have done a lot more with light/dark imagery and with the umbrella in the choreo they could have gone for a gentleman/'kingsmen' concept that would have been a lot cleaner of a visual and also would smooth over some of the visual discrepency between the fact that one of the members first debuted TEN YEARS AGO and the maknae is still 17, and they can't really do the sexy second gen concept i think they were partially trying to go for. the gratuituous ass shot of taehoon was extremely funny though. you can do very stylized mvs for cheap (see my cheap mvs post!) and i think if they had done something similar to knk's sunset or even oneus' valkyrie (speaking of other insanely good debuts) where there's a heavy emphasis on lighting and camera angles and editing, it would have made much more of an impact. the less money you have to work with the harder it becomes to make maximalist decorated sets work, and sometimes you do have to sacrifice in some areas. regardless of that though i think their debut was success and if you haven't listened to the rest of their mini you should because all the songs fuck (i really hope we get a comeback from them because i want the second half of fix you so bad) and it's very pretty clear that they're all talented and have the vocal chops to back themselves up; see this acapella cover!!

Currently Reading: nothing atm because i haven't had the chance to make another trip to the library, but the last book i read was The Meaning of Birds by Jaye Robin Brown! Very sad but very good. I've also recently read Stars, Hide Your Fires by Jessica Mary Best, The Many Half-Lived Lives of Sam Sylvester by Maya MacGregor, and I Wish You All The Best by Mason Deaver! I very much enjoyed all 4 of them, but I will say that The Many Half-Lived Lives of Sam Sylvester was definitely my favorite :)

Currently Watching: rewatching Star Trek: Discovery with my dad (and introducing my mom to it at the same time), watching Only Murders in the Building with my mom for the first time, and my dad and I just recently finished watching Star Trek: Lower Decks. plus my mom and I are always in a perpetual rewatch of Legends of Tomorrow and/or Arrow (though they've been on pause a little bit lately). now I'm just waiting for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon: The Book of Carol to come back in late September lmao, among other shows
