Drive In
Pairing: Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Present Day) x Female Reader.
Summary: After unsuccessfully navigating the crazy world of online dating apps, you meet Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and agree to go to a drive-in and perhaps you have finally met your perfect match.
Warnings: Fluff, romantic, some profanity, toxic dating app horror stories.
A/N: This was requested by Anon. Hope y’all enjoy! :)
Tumblr media
Back in the day, Maverick considered himself to be quite the Casanova. It used to be so easy, come so naturally. Maybe because thirty years ago he was a lot younger and his jet black hair wasn't fading. His body was still firm and taunt, in his line of work it was a major priority to keep in shape, but his face had become worn, the skin around his green eyes now had wrinkles.
"You're still a very good looking man," Phoenix told him when she, Coyote, Payback, Bob, and Rooster was helping him make his dating app profile.
All eyes were on her when the aviator quickly added, embarrassed:
"Respectfully speaking, of course, sir!"
The guys chuckled while Maverick tried to hold back his amusement.
Coyote let out a low whistle.
"Ooo, Phoenix got the hots for Captain." He teased.
"I do not!" Phoenix defended. "And I swear to God, if this gets back to Hangman, I'll kill you."
She shot a death glare at Coyote, that made him straighten up quick. She shot the look to all the guys meaning business.
Maverick patted Phoenix on her shoulder to assure her it was OK.
"Thank you, Phoenix. I appreciate the compliment."
He held up his phone and returned his attention back to the profile.
"Are you guys sure this is the right thing to do?"
He wrinkled his brow. The whole process seemed so unnatural to him.
"If you filled out all the questions honestly the algorithm will try to bring you the best possible matches." Bob commented.
"But the algorithm doesn't get it right 100% of the time." Payback added, looking at Maverick.
"What do you mean?" Maverick asked.
"He means there might be a dud or two," Coyote answered.
"But still the odds are in your favor." Phoenix encouraged.
Maverick sighed as he closed the app and pocketed his phone. He was tired of thinking about it for now.
"There used to be a point in time when I could just sing to a woman in a club as a way of flirting."
"Sounds lame," Rooster finally chimed in.
Maverick gave him a pointed look.
"Lame, huh?” Maverick chuckled, the memories coming back to him. It all seemed just like yesterday but also a lifetime ago.  “Guess who was my wingman?"
***
You were two seconds away from throwing your phone across the room. You'd do it, too, not caring if it broke, the only thing was you knew how much you needed the damn thing.
Stupid dating apps. After trying a month without them, you were having zero luck dating out there "in the wild" so, reluctantly, you downloaded the toxic app again, damn well knowing it would all still be the same old bullshit. If it wasn't some fake bot, it was just the same losers over and over you matched with. You were going to pull your hair out if another dude sent "wyd?" at 11 am on a Wednesday.
You wanna know "what I'm doing?", Chad?! You thought. I'm at work at this time, that's where I am! Why aren't you doing the same?!
You didn't even want to think about how you basically had the same conversation over and over with these guys.
"Hello, beautiful baby gurrl. Good mornin!'"
"Hi, there. Good morning."
"How you sleep last night?"
"Just fine, thanks. HBU?"
"It could have been better. I'd rather be waking up next to you, babyyy."
" ... "
"Send me a pic?"
"No."
"Why not? You shy?"
"..."
" Hello?!"
*incoming unsolicited dick pic*
"You like dat? You like what you see? ;)"
" ... "
"Dat could be alll yours and more! You wanna come over later?"
"I don't think so."
"Why not? It's not like I'm gonna kill you..lol"
"...."
"Sooo...you gonna come over or...I could come over there?!"
"No. I don't even know you! I just met you five minutes ago."
"Don't waste my time! Ya know, a lot of girls like what I got. You're lucky I'm even giving you the time of day!"
"..."
"..."
"K. Go text one of them then."
" ... "
"Man, fuck you, bitch. Your loss! I didn't want your ugly ass anyway. LOL."
You sighed. Why was trying to find your person so physically and mentally taxing? Some of your friends actually had good luck on the dating apps but it was just not working out for you. You thought about all your options: keep trying the apps, try in person again, hell maybe even switch teams?! The best option was the idea of becoming an old, single, crazy cat lady. At this point, it sounded like the most peaceful choice.
You were laying on your back on your bed with one arm slung over your eyes, trying to block out all your frustrations.
Your phone next to you vibrated, signaling you had a notification.
Oh great, You thought. Can't wait to see what this one's got to say.
You picked up your phone, punched in your pass code, and opened the app.
Pleasantly surprised was an understatement! You had matched with the most handsome man you'd ever seen on any app ever.
He was definitely older, much older you were sure of it, but the age gap didn't bother you. He only had a few pictures but you saw he had dark hair, green eyes, perfectly chiseled nose and jawline.
Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, USN.
As good as he looked, you couldn't help but have reservations. Living in San Diego, you had been on a few dates with military men before. They could be just as shady as the civilian Joe Blows, if not even more. Plus, he was way too fine looking to still be single. You tried not to judge. Divorced? Widowed? Perhaps he was looking for a last minute fling before his next naval cruise?
Your phone vibrated again and you saw he sent you a message.
"Hi, nice to meet you. I'm Pete Mitchell. But everyone calls me Maverick or "Mav".
"Nice to meet you! I'm Y/N." You typed back. "Cruise to any where fun lately, sailor?"
"What gave it away? The picture of me in my dress whites?"
"Not a bad picture, I must say." It was true. Technically he was old enough to be your father but he was still a smoke show. Silver fox, indeed.
"Ha, ha! Thanks. Ah, no fun cruises. I was recently called back to North Island for work."
You told him what you did for a living and you found out he was career military. A naval aviator for over thirty years. You kept chatting back and forth for the next two days and exchanged numbers. On Friday night Maverick called you.
"Look, I'll be honest with you, Y/N." Maverick explained. "This dating app thing...it's not really my style. My kids put me up to it. They said I needed to get out more and this is the way people do it nowadays. I just don't know..."
"Kids?" You repeated, slightly surprised he never mentioned it before. "You have kids?"
Maverick chuckled. "I'm sorry, I guess I should rephrase that. They're actually a squadron of Top Gun graduates I train. I call 'em my kids even though they're all about thirty-something years old."
You exhaled a sigh of relief. "Oh, I see."
"Anyway," Maverick went on. "How would you like to go out with me tomorrow night?"
You were pleasantly surprised again. Most guys you encountered on the apps were either one extreme or another. Some wanted to come over right away and others it was like pulling teeth to get them to actually take you on a real date.
"Is that OK with you?" Maverick asked.
"Oh, yeah!" You said. "Yes, that would be great! Dinner and a movie?"
"You read my mind," Maverick confirmed. "I was thinking I take you to the drive-in. They're doing an 80's movie theme night."
"Drive-in?" You repeated. You hadn't been there in ages. Maverick must have misunderstood your tone because he went to explain:
"Yeah, it's where they have a big outdoor projection screen and you pull up in your car..."
You burst out laughing.
"Pete," You started. "Come on. I know I'm younger than you but I do know what a drive-in is!"
Maverick laughed at himself.
"Sorry. Of course you do."
"That sounds like fun, Pete. Let's do it."
***
You knew you were breaking your own rules by allowing Maverick to pick you up but you felt like you could trust this man. Your jaw dropped when you saw the forest green vintage race car pull up in your driveway.
"She's a '56," Maverick explained as he helped you into the car. "She can go from zero to one seventy in about six seconds."
"Wow," You said, resting the bouquet he just gifted you in your lap. Out of curiosity, you ran your fingers along the dashboard. You'd never been in a car like this before.
Maverick started the car and began backing out.
"I usually just ride my motorcycle but this seemed more appropriate for the occasion."
You smiled. "I guess you have the need speed on the ground as well as in the air."
Maverick turned to look at you then as he shifted the car into drive and you weren't exactly sure how to describe it. It was like a mixture of surprise, curiousity, and a touch of sadness.
"Did I say something wrong?" You asked, concerned.
Maverick shook his head.
"No," He assured you. "It's just...so funny and...kind of weird you said that. 'The need for speed'. I haven't heard that in a long time. I had a friend I used to say that to. A long time ago. It was like...oh, what do you call it? Something that you and one other person knows?"
"An inside joke?" You suggested.
Maverick smiled. "Yeah," He agreed. "An inside joke."
"You don't talk to that friend anymore?" You asked.
"Oh, I do." Maverick replied. "I sure do. It's just...he's not here with us...physically anymore."
"Oh..." You realized and you felt a twinge of gulit in your stomach. This wasn't the best way to start off a date.
As if reading your mind, Maverick took one hand off the wheel and softly brushed the side of your cheek with the back of his hand. His hand felt callous, the result of decades of working on all sorts of aircraft, but it also felt strangely comforting. The feeling guilt in your stomach dissolved and felt something like butterflies replace it.
"It's OK, sweetheart," Maverick said and he really meant it.
After dinner, you two drove in the drive-in. A triple feature of John Hughes movies were playing. You and Maverick laughed when Kelly LeBrock turned Bill Paxton into a talking blob in Weird Science and cheered as Judd Nelson pumped his fist in the air at the end of The Breakfast Club. The final movie was Sixteen Candles and you couldn't help but sigh when Molly Ringwald finally got to kiss her dream guy.
"This is one of my favorite movies," You said.
"You like the romantic stuff, huh?" Maverick teased and you laughed.
"Yeah, I know it's cliche," You said. "But I can't help it. I'm such a sucker for it."
"Nothing wrong with that," Maverick told you. "Just between you and me...I'm a romantic myself."
He leaned in and kissed you and you couldn't help but smile against his lips.
When the two of you parted, your eyes fluttered open and you said:
"I know we just met but I feel so lucky to have found you. I was about ready to give up. The apps were driving me crazy."
Maverick rolled his eyes at the mention of the dating apps.
"I don't get them either," He said. "But I saw your picture and...I don't know. I just...thought you were really beautiful and I'm glad I met you, too."
You felt Maverick take your hand in his.
"If it's OK with you, would you see me again?"
You smiled and answered by kissing him again.
"Sure, I'd really love that."

lights up — daniel ricciardo
Tumblr media
summary – having too much fun with Daniel in a Coachella mosh pit. pairing – daniel ricciardo x you (female reader) rating – mature (course language, drug reference) word count – 1.7k a/n – fluffy, friends to lovers bullshit but i liked writing it! masterlist
Tumblr media
Physical touch. That was Daniel’s love language and it was what had the hairs on the back of your neck standing on end, even in the 40-degree heat.
It was sweltering in Indio, California. Roasting. You were somewhat prepared with the large cowboy hat sitting upon your head, sheltering you from the sun. Nothing really could’ve prepared you for the day – your first Coachella. It wasn't your first music festival by any stretch of the imagination but this one was big. You’d been looking forward to it for months, brushing off the cobwebs in preparation for the weekend and losing your mind over your outfit.
You'd spent hours shopping online, putting together the perfect ensemble, knowing you’d be photographed. It was inevitable with the company you were keeping but you didn’t care. It was happenstance that you and Daniel found yourselves in the same friendship group, watching your respective best friends fall in love and marry in the same year. Fate prevailed for them and you always wondered whether it would for you.
Daniel seemed to think so whenever you sat together, locked away in deep conversation. You were magnetic in that way. Always finding a quiet moment alone amongst friends, stealing glances from across the room until one of you nodded for the door. Plenty of Irish goodbyes shared between the two of you over the years – you could never say no to him and you never wanted to.
“Let’s get out of here,” You would whisper, Daniel already clocking the quickest exit.
It was his all too familiar touch that caused you to spin around in your combat boots, handbag swinging into your hip as you spotted that smile. Bright. White. Evergreen. He hadn’t even been in the sun for more than 10 minutes and was already sweating but he was relived to see you standing there, looking like a rockstar. Daniel had sussed you out a couple of times, asking whether you were still tagging along – trying to seem nonchalant and not desperately holding onto the hope that you'd be here.
You weren’t naïve as to why he was asking you the question and you answered happily, also wanting to make sure he would be there too – your partner in crime. He was Danny Ricciardo, after all. Our party boy.
And there he was as you turned around, standing proudly in a loud party shirt, tinted aviators covering his playful eyes and a smile that could light up the entire festival grounds if they needed him to. God, he was beautiful.
“You can always rely on Danny Ric to bring a bit of colour to the party,” You enthused, softly tracing the printed palm trees on his neon pink shirt, “So good to see you, honey.”
“And you, sweetheart.” He sweetly replied.
Daniel had missed you. And missed his opportunity so many times. He’d lost count of how many times he had the chance to man up and revealed his true feelings. But he didn’t want to ruin the friendship – a friendship that meant more to him than any other. He’d fucked it up so many times in the past with friends turned lovers and he would’ve rather die than lose yours. He couldn’t even bear to think about that. Gut-wrenching.
But that didn’t mean he didn’t spend every second of the day flirting with you. Anyone looking in would’ve thought you were honeymooning the way you doted over each other – him making sure you had a cold drink in your hand at all times and you making sure his collar was neatly folded down, sunscreen applied. There was an unspeakable pull between the two of you and it never dawned on either of you how obviously in love you were until someone brought it up, usually someone who liked to see you squirm.
“Babe, you need to fuck him and put us all out of our misery,” Your best friend whispered in your ear while Daniel scoured through the list of set times you’d handed to him, eyes widening at her words.
“I’m not fucking Dan,” You quietly snapped back, “We’re just having fun.”
“Hopping on that dick might be fun too if you weren’t chicken shit. You’re both as oblivious as each other…”
Your mouth fell open at her bluntness. Usually you appreciated her honesty but in that moment, you were offended. You weren’t chicken shit, you thought. Or maybe you were and couldn’t see how pathetic it was that you hadn't crossed the line with Daniel after all this time – that tempting, tantalising line that was constantly being dangled in front of you.
“I’m not talking to you about this anymore.”
You walked away, pissed off. So pissed off that you grabbed Daniel’s arm and dragged him away from the group, “Please tell me you’ve picked a band for us to see… I can’t be around Hannah right now and you’re my only hope.”
Daniel chuckled and nodded enthusiastically, “Amyl and the Sniffers are on at 5.”
He knew you loved them and he was proud as punch when you tightened your grip on his waist and stood on your tiptoes, pressing your lips to his cheek. “Fuck I love you.”
His heart was in his throat every time you said those three words. They were never in the context that he wanted them to be said but that didn’t mean he loved hearing them any less. His stomach did a flip as he peered down at you, “Love you too.”
You and Daniel found your own little nook underneath a shady tree, away from the chaos and your friends. You sat there for hours, catching up on life and sharing a joint – simply enjoying each other’s company while bands played and went on stage. The music of Coahella wasn’t really Daniel’s vibe and it definitely wasn’t yours but you didn’t care.
Daniel was just stoked to be able to spend time with you after what had been a shitty start to the year. He needed your grounding words to remind him of what mattered most in life - he always trusted you with that. You were his safe place and sometimes Facetime just didn't cut it.
The sun had finally begun setting out in the desert. The dusty breeze cooling as darkness cloaked the sky, stars starting to twinkle above. Your fingers had become subconsciously intertwined with Daniel's at some point as you began your descent into the growing crowd, everyone keen to get as close as humanely possible to the stage. Harry Styles was closing out the festival and although you and Daniel had debated on seeing King Gizzard instead, you both agreed that you couldn’t miss history in the making. It was Harry fucking Styles for christ sake.
“Can you see alright?” Daniel asked, mindful that your vision was obstructed due to your shorter stature. His hands gripped your hips as he positioned you in front of him, feeling his warm chest bump your back.
“Yeah, I’m good.” You replied with a smile. He was protective of you and you loved how close he was, making sure nobody knocked you around or pushed in front. Hands never leaving your hips until the stage lights started to dim.
“I don’t want to lose you in this madness,” You yelled over the thousands of screaming people as you turned around and grasped Daniel’s hand, looking into his dark eyes – pleading.
“As if I'd let that happen,” He shouted back with a smile and clasped you hand, spinning you around so his arm was loosely wrapped around your neck. Both of your hands grasped his tattooed forearm, feeling safely tucked under it, wishing you could stay like this forever.
Having you that close killed Daniel. It hurt knowing that in 90 minutes, the show would be over and you’d disappear into the night, out of reach until you meet again. He tried to push those thoughts away and seize this rare moment, holding you, dancing with you. Moving in perfect rhythm with the music.
There were a lot of songs that neither of you knew but you still swayed along together, giggling at some of the girls who were literally catapulting themselves through the crowd to get closer to their idol, “Is this what it’s like for you at Albert Park?” You yelled into Daniel’s ear, standing up on your tiptoes so he could hear you.
His hand slipped down to the small of your back to hold you in place, sending chills down your spine once again, “There's a lot less boobs and a lot more middle aged women named Karen.”
“Hot,” You quipped back with a smirk as Daniel tugged you closer into his side, Harry’s voice suddenly becoming background noise.
This was his chance, he thought – the opportunity he’d been waiting for.
“Can I kiss you?” He shouted over the music, searching your eyes for any kind of hesitancy before leaning in, but you already were halfway there. You were two magnets constantly being pulled together, after all.
“Thought you’d never ask,” You teased before your lips locked, slowly at first but you’d both wanted this for so long – yearning for the chance to be free of insecurity and fear. You moved quickly to deepen the kiss, not caring about how public it all was. You were way too excited to care about anything besides Daniel’s lips on yours.
Your hands grasped both sides of Daniel’s face as his held your waist, holding you as closely as he could without breaking you in half. His fingertips brushed along the hem of you jeans, tugging on the loops that were unoccupied by a belt, desperate to feel you. He wanted it all with you but he knew he couldn’t. Not in the middle of a mosh pit.
A few more seconds passed before you reluctantly pulled away, breathing heavily. Your lips ghosted over Daniel’s and cheekily he took that opportunity to sneak one more kiss before resting his forehead on yours. Noses bumping and eyes blown out, hungry for more than what you could give him in the middle of the Californian desert.
“That was nice,” You rasped and you could feel the blush creeping rapidly up your neck. There was a break between songs and you savoured the few seconds of peace, even though your heart was thumping in your ears.
“Really nice,” Daniel whispered and paused for a moment before leaning in again, “How badly do you wanna stay for the rest of the show?”
You pulled back and clenched your bottom lip between your front teeth, pondering your next move, “If it means leaving with you right now then fuck Harry Styles.”
A loud laugh slipped from Daniel's swollen lips before he nodded in agreement. Your words were like music to his ears, better than any song he’d heard all day.

🎬 LOVERS NOSTALGIA

i got inspiration from one of my upperclassmen during highschool who was president of the aviation club, i always looked up to her and she was so incredibly kind to me. i hope she’s doing well now :)
Tumblr media
Felix glanced down at his phone, double-tapping the fingerprint dappled screen to see no notifications, nothing. He’d been waiting outside the highschool for at least an hour now and the once warm and comfortable rays of suns began to irritate him.
For some background, it had been at least two months since you’ve seen each other, Felix having visited his family back in Australia which left you far away in Korea.
Are you here yet?
You could basically hear the displeasure in his text, imagining your boyfriend huffing and puffing while passerby sent him looks. Cute.
He had no idea why on earth you’d want to see him here. Why not the airport? Have one of those heartwarming reunions he saw online all the time where he’d pick you up, spin you around and give you the biggest kiss of the century. A real kiss, not one through the screen.
Except this wasn’t the airport but your old highschool where you’d specifically instructed him to go in order to see you.
I’ve been here goofball, now you have to find me ;)
Oh you were something else alright. Only for you would he search a highschool. Only for you.
You’re unbelievable.
Despite saying that he searched. And searched and searched. All throughout the highschool, through the cafeteria, the old corridors behind the library, even the science classroom where you’d spilt coffee on his favorite t-shirt. He remembered that like yesterday.
You’d called out and he followed the sound, until his legs were exhausted and he was on his last straw. Dragging himself up the stairs not-so gracefully.
“I.. I give up. Just let me see you. . .” Felix heaved, finally reaching the third floor where he resisted the urge to sit flat on his bottom and wait.
I’m in the Aviation room, come fast!
He stared at the text for a moment, once dissipated energy restoring like new. Running wildly, he slid on his heel at the familiar room. Of course, how could he forget?
“Y/n!!”
There were tears in his eyes when he yelled your name, streaming down his cheeks when you toppled off your stool into a massive hug.
You.
Your scent, your smile, your skin. He missed it so much. You pulled him impossibly closer on the floor, his head buried in your neck.
“Do you remember this room?”
The Aviation room. The nostalgic feeling he got every time he thought about it, where he’d kissed you for the first time and he kissed you again now. The place where he fell in love with you, watching you put so much into the club he called stupid. But he still went to all the meetings, reminded you of all the dates, cheered you on.
“I missed you.”
How could he forget?

Mother Superion barely had time to assess the large coat, the expensive hat and the aviator sunglasses all bunched up together into a messy pile located at the edge of her own desk when Jillian noticed her entrance.
“You’re alone?” She asked by way of greeting, peeping behind the nun’s back to make sure. “We should best close the door.”
“And ciao to you too, dottoressa,” Superion replied dryly, watching as Jillian went on to lock them in after looking outside for any other nuns strolling in the corridor.
“You’ll understand my bluntness in a second.” Jillian returned to her companion, gave her an apologetic peck on the lips and soon produced a magazine which she put into Superion’s hands. “You should take a look at this.”
It was a thin little rag, the sort that printed more low-quality paparazzi pictures than it did any sort of meaningful text—when there were any words to go along with the images, typos and grammatical mistakes abounded throughout the extravagant theories “explaining” the ins and outs of the love lives of all sorts and ranks of celebrities, from international movie stars to barely significant internet phenomena boasting of a couple thousand followers online.
Mother Superion might have wondered how and why a woman such as Jillian Salvius would ever have any such dreck in her possession had she not at once recognised what the low-quality paparazzi photograph chosen for that particular issue’s cover revealed: it was an aerial shot, likely the product of a snooping drone, which had captured an inner patio of Jillian’s house—and both of them, Jillian and Mother Superion herself, featured in it, standing suspiciously close together as the nun’s hand stroked the renowned scientist’s cheek.
“This has been out for only some two hours and it is making a hell of a lot of noise already. My PR staff are going completely mad. ArqTech’s social media accounts are being bombarded with either accusations of hypocrisy on my part, secretly seducing the church in the background while fighting it in public, or celebratory messages about ‘crushing the patriarchy of a decadent institution’ through ‘full contact sisterhood’ or something like it. Dozens of extremely suggestive emojis are sprinkled throughout in both kinds.”
Jillian said all this with a wealth of gestures, drawing abstract, nervous shapes in the air, squinting her eyes at every word, as if they stung her tongue with each absurd syllable that escaped her lips.
Suzanne looked down at the magazine again, flipping through some of its pages. A couple more of blurry or pixelated images where she and Jillian could barely be made out adorned a page with a single column of text in a large font over a red background that would make anyone’s eyes water; she couldn’t read the speculation contained therein.
She could likewise not speak her mind on the matter, as Jillian continued her tirade.
“And there’s more, of course there’s more. I regret to inform you that you and I have been…" She grimaced. “Blorbofied. And please don’t ask me how I know that word.”
Mother Superion raised an inquisitive, insistent eyebrow nonetheless. Jillian sighed and submitted.
“… Camila,” she admitted.
The nun pinched the bridge of her nose.
“But what I mean to say is that the internet is simply abuzz with this. We’re being shipped. People are writing fanfiction about us. I don’t know if you know, but that’s when they tell stories—”
“I know what that means, Jillian.”
Catching her off-guard, Suzanne was the one moved to confess by another eyebrow raised high.
“Well, Xena fanfiction didn’t write itself in the nineties, you know.”
Jillian remained speechless for a few seconds more as she attempted to process the information of how the woman standing in front of her, who she had seen kill scores of malevolent men as well as writhe beneath her in pleasure, who wore a habit and a veil and prayed to God every day, was the same person who would write Xena fanfiction in the late nineties and post them on the internet—some of which might still be out there, somewhere.
On second thought, the whole killing men part did make quite a good deal of sense…
“If this has been out for only two hours, how are these people writing stories already?” Suzanne asked, rescuing her from her trance.
Jillian shook her head slightly, as if to dispel the thought of a young Suzanne writing stories of dubious merit and intentions in some corner of the convent when not absorbed by training.
“I don’t know. I haven’t read any—nor will I—but they even came up with a name. They’re calling us ‘doctor superion’.
The look she received as a reply was impenetrable. Jillian couldn’t tell whether Mother Superion despised it or was somehow amused by it.
“But that’s beside the point,” Jillian went on, rather exasperated at the possibilities, “because if I’m getting hell over this, what can it mean for you?”
She reached out to Suzanne’s hands, her touch scared, her eyes pleading.
“Can the Vatican take any sort of action against you? Have I put you in trouble again?”
“This will pass,” Suzanne said to comfort her, cupping her cheek. “You’re talking about the Catholic church. They didn’t even believe women could have any kind of sex for the longest time. They won’t read into a bad picture where I’m doing nothing more apart from touching your face.”
“And the gossip? The articles are multiplying online, the stories—”
“How many stories has the Church survived?”
“Suzanne, don’t fault me for saying this, but I don’t give a fuck about the Church surviving anything—it’s you I’m worried about. If my investors drop out now, I can always find others if I need to, but if they excommunicate you and tear you from the girls—”
“Jillian. I’ve been here for about twenty years. I’ve done worse than touch rich ‘heretic’ women’s faces and they know it. You know it,” she said, looking pointedly at her. “Stop worrying.”
The scientist relaxed, if somewhat against her will. She frowned soon after, however.
“… What do you mean by ‘worse’? How many other ‘worse’ things were you involved with?”
“… A conversation for another day. I think doctor superion has given you enough strong emotions for the time being.”
Jillian laughed despite herself. Mother Superion smiled seeing her unwind.
“I won’t hear the end of this anytime soon,” the owner of ArqTech pondered.
“Hence the detective disguise in coming here when it’s thirty degrees Celsius outside?”
“Well, I wouldn’t want to unwittingly inspire any more fanfics than are already being written, would I? They’d have a field day with it, no doubt… But are you very sure you won’t suffer any repercussions for this?”
Suzanne kissed her.
Jillian attempted to repeat her question, but she found that kissing Suzanne back was quite a balm to her burdened heart—after all, if there were consequences to face either way, might as well deserve them in full.
When they parted to catch their breath, Mother Superion offered her an idea.
“We can say you’ve had a revelation through me, a miracle conversion. Even the Vatican will be glad to hear of it, for once.”
“Excuse you, but I have known what I liked since very early on. You wouldn’t be able to convert me to anything,” Jillian replied with a smirk. She leaned in to kiss Suzanne again, but stopped short thanks to a thought. “Hold on. Did you already have a contingency plan at the ready in case anything like this should happen?”
Mother Superion shrugged lightly.
“I told you. Worse things. In this line of work, it’s always best to look ahead of yourself.”
“Well, I might just run with your version, then. If only to calm these people down for a time.”
“The writers won’t stop.”
“I know. They might go at it even more excitedly. But the public image of the company might still be salvaged.”
“I pray it will. You’re invited to service if you want to show off just how genuine your new quest for God is,” Superion provoked her.
“Please don’t make me,” Jillian said with a laugh, pulling her closer. “I think I prefer private prayer to this whole blasphemer-to-devoted-choirgirl-overnight AU.”
Suzanne chuckled and kissed her again, throwing the gossip magazine away.
“See? Don’t worry about the others. We can write our own story all by ourselves…”
