Do you think "Daphne is the one handling the budget" is at all a popular headcanon for the Mystery Gang?
I like the idea of Daphne pulling out some reading glasses to do the gang's bookkeeping in the shotgun seat on long drives. The bankrolling is definitely Daphne and Shaggy (they're the ones that come from money), but it's probably still a pretty limited amount of money to work with just based on how young they are.
I want to say that Shaggy's money is in some kind of trust until he's 25. Meanwhile, Daphne does have an allowance, which is pretty big since her parents know she's traveling and they may not approve of the company she keeps, but they DO want her to be safe... but it's not enough to just spend willy nilly, considering she's the bulk of the funds for four people and one dog.
Someone has to plan out what they spend on, like... food and hygiene. Trap supplies. Laundromat usage. The occasional motel night if the elements are making 'sleep in the van' a bad idea. Phone plans, depending on the era. Health insurance if their parents don't have them on-plan (depends on the year). Car insurance (legally required). The van is old enough to require maintenance and have a pretty crappy mpg, so the gas budget is pretty high. Yearly inspections and other "let's not get stopped by the cops" stuff. Vet visits (vaccinations, teeth cleaning) for Scooby. Medication for various chronic conditions they may have. Replacing Velma's glasses when they get broken or her prescription changes. Fred's hair gel, which I assume he has. Shaggy's weed stipend. So much sunscreen. Etc.
Like they do have homes to go back to in case they truly run out of money, but it's still a lot to cover, and emergencies on the road do happen.
Modern setting Daphne just does an accounting course online and gets a CPA degree all in service of: 1. Managing the team's money 2. Catching bad guys via audit
(I'd suggest a correspondence course for an older setting but they're always on the move so idk how effective that would be.)

When my father could think of nothing to add to a funny or odd moment in a conservation, he’d let out a sarcastic “Nothing but the best.”
When a drunk guy on the street swore at us and made lewd gestures as we walked to get dinner in Cleveland one night, he looked over and said nothing but the best. When I showed him a particularly insane clip from Wondershowzen he liked, nothing but the best.
It was rare, however, that he had nothing to add, argue, or joke about when talking to me.
The last time I was able to have a long conversation with my dad, he told me he thought his personal knowledge base had a few spots of depth but that he didn’t know much. It was a rare moment of self-pity, one I felt was unearned since he was a person who knew a lot about everything. I challenged him. I began listing stories he told me about writers, actors, politicians, about history and economics. He knew about petty arguments Joni Mitchel had with her managers in the 60s. He explained the 2008 financial crisis to me in under a minute (likely during one of his furlough days when the government was shut down). He taped avant-garde short films on VHS so we could watch them together on the weekends. That’s how I ended up seeing Maya Deren’s “Meshes of the Afternoon” before entering high school, let alone a film course. His favorite short was “Down Rusty Down,” an Australian black-and-white comedy from 1997 where humans play various dogs in a neighborhood. We watched it for the first time together but he asked me 50 times over the last few years if I’d ever seen it. I wanted to scream every time that I was there with him for his entire indie cinema phase! Our shared movie viewings started when I was a child when he forced me to watch All That Jazz and Die Hard (inappropriate movies to watch with your kid) and ended around 2001 when we watched Y Tu Mama Tambien (an inappropriate movie to watch with your parent). It made me feel better that he didn’t even remember I was with him on this art house movie rabbit hole because it meant he liked it on his own, whether his kids did or not. He liked paintings, he hated musicals, he liked cooking and got better from my middle school years on. He subscribed to specific guitarists’ Patreon pages during the lockdown and watched his favorite musicians explain how they wrote old songs.
When my grandfather died, my brother told me what he thought makes a great dad. “It’s doing stuff you don’t want to do for your kids.” This was before he had kids of his own. He seems to enjoy attending as many of my nieces’ volleyball games as he can.
What my brother meant was that the sign of a good father was the ability to engage in your kids’ interests rather than strictly engaging in your own. Our dad was not a basketball player, but I have memories of him teaching me in our driveway how to box out. When my brother decided to become a CPA, my dad took accounting classes online so he could understand what my brother was talking about when he visited. He came to every play I was in from the age of 6, including shows I did in college that were, I’m sure, not to his taste. He gave notes on scripts and stories I wrote, he played guitar with me, he helped brainstorm ways to get an agent with me. He would preface each piece of advice with “I don’t really know how any of this works” and then make cogent, informed arguments about what I should do next. He treated every interest his kids and grandkids had like a hobby of his own.
When he was not busy being a dad, cheering in the stands of a football game or clapping in the audience of a play or in the kitchen making dinner for his wife and kids, he was reading, exploring, and finding tolerable classical music to listen to and share with all of us. He didn’t merely love the act of reading, he liked fiction specifically. He liked finding out about the craft of writing. He worked on novels and stories of his own after retirement. He liked comedy. His knowledge of it was specific and enigmatic. After taking a few pictures at the house of my friends and our homecoming dates, he asked where we were taking the girls for dinner. “Buca di Beppo,” I said (because I know how to treat a lady), and my dad said “oh, that’s where Phil Hartman’s wife got drunk for hours before going home and shooting him.” “Thank you, Dad. That’s a great icebreaker.”
When I got into stand-up myself, he pitched me jokes and essay prompts via email, even when he was ill. His last email to me was to let me know he thought a big break was approaching for me and that he and my mom did not sit up at night worrying that I couldn’t make it in comedy. "We have faith in your work and talent.”
One day, inspired by some mystery itch that came from no one in his family, my father started digging a hole in the backyard. He read through a tiny yellow pamphlet on how to build a pond, and with no help (certainly not from his kids, and before the days of YouTube), he made a mosquito-free pond in our yard. He put in fish that survived winters, he put in tadpoles that became frogs and hopped into neighbors’ yards. One morning, he came outside and discovered a giant crane hunting one of his frogs. He’d made an entire ecosystem thanks to one afternoon of reading and following through on a whim.
That’s what I’ll remember about him. Not strictly the things he did his damnedest to enjoy for us, but what he enjoyed.
He was married to my mother for 49 years. He studied city planning and managed to find work in his field. He focused on fighting for affordable housing and revitalizing neighborhoods including Ohio City where we lived for most of my teens. He was a good dad because he engaged in the stuff his kids and wife liked even when he disliked it (that included moving from the city to the suburbs for a time). But he was a great dad and friend because he managed to get me interested in what he liked. He took the time to listen, to watch, to talk. He let me know how much joy he took in his work. He let us know how much he loved being a dad and grandfather.
When I think of what he could have done better, I can’t come up with anything to say. He gave us nothing but his best.

this who yall want to crunch your numbers? 🤨anyways, hang on lemme just …
THE ACCOUNTANT .
100% was born and raised in an almost painfully normal family. run of the mill everyday officer workers that picked him up on time, tried to attend to school games and performances, had dinner together every night, etc.
did his peers / upperclassmen think he was a delinquent solely based off of his looks? absolutely. did they continuously push him into situations where he quite literally had no choice but to learn self defense? absolutely. did everyone blame him when fights went too far even when he wasn’t the one to initiate anything? without a doubt. did his parents think his descent into troublesome fights during and after school was their fault for raising him wrong? of course. did he feel so completely lost and unsure of who be could turn to without his truth being used against him? yes.
after barely graduating, he started gigs as late night security, did a few bodyguard stunts, met the wrong people that wasted no time with throwing him down as their escape goat. he fell into a criminal lifestyle one punch at a time.
his family stopped calling him. his previous so called friends stopped reaching out. but he was fine with that, though. learned how to take all of that loneliness and crush it into something noteworthy — as a drive to keep himself busy wherever money flows.
then, he met a man that looked just as broken as he felt behind some shitty bar. guy was a fed, but acted like anything but. the stranger’d crass, at his limit, and he felt like being a goddamn saint for no reason. offered an ear to borrow and a shoulder to lean on. learned how far this guy’s moral compass has fallen over the span of a few months. how he’s been debating on the exact thing he’s been sworn to lock behind bars. what the fuck was he supposed to say back? don’t worry about it — things will get better soon? hell. no. he took everything that’d been spilled and transformed it into what he does best. told the guy his father’s one ugly son of a bitch, a real bottom of the barrel kind of scum, and there are far better ways to get revenge compared to murder. and the stranger listened. learned another point of view and stayed true to it. even gave him a card that flashed the name kong siwoo — in case he needed a return in favor.
things somehow got better after that. not right away, no, but they did year after year. he straightened his act. enrolled into some online college just to get a masters in accounting and finance. applied time and time again well beneath his qualifications, only to be turned down simply due to how he looks. he does manage to land a job that sticks, finally. works his goddamn ass off and all of that grueling effort’s starting to pay off.
J.JK VERSE — he’s currently a full time teacher at kyoto tech. specializes in math and sometimes known to offer soft counseling to those brave enough to look past his rugged appearance. his ct is …. math based .. used to a full time tax professional ( yes, he did get his cpa ) and .. maybe chased down some people that owed someone else money. allegedly.

Thirty-four.
It's the Friday before Valentine's Day and I'm on my way out of a local Hunanese restaurant with my food when I see someone playing his video game.
I have a bad habit of eavesdropping, of being nosy, and every man I've ever dated has chastised me for my lack of propriety. They say that I'm not as slick as I think I am; the finesse that I imagine myself possessing in spades is, in reality, much less abundant. In my defense, I say that I'm curious, observant. I'm intrigued by the lives that others lead.
It's a bad habit of mine, but I just like to know. As I walk past the customer seated at their table, I recognize from the corner of my eye the pixels on his screen. All of a sudden, I was transported back in time to those winter nights when I was curled up in bed next to Jim.
As a corporate CPA and a definite workaholic, Jim virtually never stopped thinking about his job. Fourteen-hour shifts daily were his bare minimum, and he seldom took time off on weekends. He once told me it's a self-esteem thing: the satisfaction he derives from completing his assigned tasks is the foundation of his self-worth. I, not at all as dedicated to my work, rather enjoyed observing and teasing him. When he did allow himself a respite, he would grab his iPhone and fire up what I always called his accounting game because its mechanics were mathematical and achieving the objectives required diligent numerical adjudication. Even when he wasn't at work, he was still accounting. In that apartment, into which I'd helped him move, I spent my evenings laid up in his bed, watching him work.
Valentine's Day approaches with inevitable certainty and I can't help but remember all the men who loved me until they didn't. The Lovers, my favorite tarot card, first came into my life resultant of my gruesome breakup with Henry, but I simply can't stop myself from being a hopeless romantic. I've always been this way.
When Henry and I began to break up, I latched onto anything and everything for emotional support. I begged my friends for help. One of them recommended that their friend do a tarot reading for me. Although I had never sought out the tarot for anything in the past, I immediately agreed. I wanted all the spiritual guidance I could get. I FaceTimed the friend, Zelled her some cash for her time, and watched the cards come to life. For my first reading, she pulled:
The Lovers, reversed The Tower, reversed The Magician, reversed Knight of Cups, reversed 10 of Cups, reversed Knight of Wands 7 of Wands
Basically, she explained, the cards did not portend good tidings for my relationship. A calamity had struck, and my relationship was a casualty. Big changes were making waves in my life, and all I could do was go wherever the tides would take me.
Of course, part of me was skeptical, because it seemed too fitting to be true. How could she have pulled such perfect cards for a breakup? Still, although I hated that the signs pointed towards a permanent breakup, not a joyful reunion, I absorbed her every word. Her subsequent readings for me continued this theme. Again and again, The Lovers reappeared, exclusively in reverse. I trusted her, but I just wanted to confirm for myself that she wasn't yanking my chain.
So, I went onto various apps online (in lieu of getting any proper work done) and sought out strangers who'd had readings done for them so that they could recommend me their tarot reader. I DMed one of those readers on Instagram, explaining that they were highly recommended to me by one of their past clients. There are innumerous Instagram accounts that specialize in providing tarot readings virtually, but my inquiry to this new reader was slightly different. I'd had these certain cards pulled for me during a reading, I wrote to them, and I wanted to know without providing any further details what a neutral party would make of these cards. I just wanted their unbiased interpretation.
This is what my Instagram reader wrote:
The Lovers, reversed: A choice not being made, a failed connection. Two people actively deciding not to move forward or to not meet each other halfway (lots of ego in this).
The Tower, reversed: Upright, this is actually a blessing of card as it means what was built on shaky ground will be rebuilt; it’s hopeful in the upright. In this position, upside down, the foundation of this connection is failing, presently feeling like things are stuck or being withheld. Feeling like a crisis is coming, super heavy and dark feelings with this. (So sorry you’re going through it or have been going through it!)
The Magician, reversed: Feeling like you don’t have any options in this scenario, like you’re lacking in some way or perhaps don’t have what it takes to overcome this. Feeling like you’re not able to show your power. This card represents Gemini or sometimes Virgo. Your friend may be dealing with one of those signs or is one. We are in Gemini season presently. Regardless, this energy is not permanent. It is transformational.
Knight of Cups, reversed: A spilled cup. Perhaps a romantic offer or other opportunity that hasn’t panned out. This is water sign energy (Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio) so one of those signs could be at play. Of note, the Knights are a more youthful and not mature energy. As quickly as they come in, they tend to leave. This was likely a swiftly developing connection, and now it seems that, as quickly as the feelings or opportunity was presented, it is now withdrawn.
10 of Cups, reversed: A divine union, the desired happily-ever-after, is not coming to fruition; a break in a connection, lack, loss, disharmony; emotions are definitely in turmoil.
Knight of Wands and 7 of Wands: Both are interesting here, and that’s why I wanted to see where they were pictured in the spread. Could mean that there is still passion here, someone has fire in their chart, or they are still hopeful for a reunion but it won’t be a mature approach. It will be a passionate approach, or someone is still pining for someone sexually. It is a low vibrational approach to a connection for sure. Someone is guarded about that, or is guarded about getting into a strictly physical connection.
I'm aware of the argument about the psychology behind the tarot, astrology, and mysticism of the like. I know that overly general claims are made and that my brain immediately assigns those claims to each relevant event in my life, giving credence where there would otherwise be skepticism. In my sad state of mind, I was happy to hear anything even remotely reasonable from anyone, even strangers. Certainly, their interpretation sounded applicable, even logical.
As I read and reread those Instagram messages, I thought with pangs in my chest about the messages on that very same platform that Henry had sent me after our first Valentine's Day together: "Thank you for planning this for us" and "I had a lot of fun" and "Nobody's ever treated me like this before." Apparently, not one person he dated before me had ever organized a proper date between them for the holiday.
I believe that Valentine's Day is only as significant as I want it to be. For the first two decades of my life, I stubbornly ignored it, castigating it for being a shallow Hallmark marketing ploy. But, the men who came into my life in my 20s showed me that I didn't have to be so cynical. (Especially my first boyfriend, who had loved with abandon.) It might be gaudy, it might be cloyingly sweet, but it was also what I made of it. So, if I wanted to plan a nice meal and a bumper-cars-on-ice outing for the man I was dating, why not? I wasn't always so verbally forthcoming with my emotions, but I at least knew to make up for it with my actions. Henry got the ice rink in Bryant Park, Jim got the Michelin-starred restaurant, Jun got the private omakase complete with a rose from the chef, and Alberto got the first gifts I'd ever intentionally given to anyone. Equally, I've never forgotten the donuts that Stephen ordered for me from across the ocean, the custom woodwork Wayne crafted for me, and all the letters from Alberto that I've kept even after all these years.
I think I've been pretty lucky, at least so far. After each breakup, I bemoaned to all my friends the loss because I truly do believe that plainly kind men are rather difficult to find and date, especially those that fit my apparently very exacting criteria, but I've somehow managed to locate a new potential suitor soon after each time. Thus, if ever I'm feeling sad or alone on any February 14, I have only myself to blame—and not The Lovers, reversed or otherwise.

A Beginner’s Guide to Setting Up Google Ads for Your Business
Google Ads is one of the most effective digital marketing tools that help businesses drive traffic, generate leads, and increase sales. Whether you own a small business or a large enterprise, running Google Ads campaigns allows you to reach potential customers who are actively searching for your products or services. This beginner-friendly guide will walk you through the step-by-step process of setting up Google Ads for business success while ensuring cost-effective ad spending and improved conversions.
Step 1: Create a Google Ads Account
To get started with Google Ads, visit ads.google.com and sign in with your Google account. If you don’t have one, create an account. Click on the “Start Now” button and follow the prompts. Google will ask whether you want Smart Mode or Expert Mode. For better control over your campaigns, select Expert Mode to customize settings and optimize your ads effectively.
Step 2: Define Your Advertising Goals
Google Ads provides different campaign goals based on your business objectives. The most common goals include: Increase website traffic — Drive visitors to your site Generate leads — Capture user information via forms Boost online sales — Encourage direct purchases Improve brand awareness — Reach a larger audience If you are new to Google Ads marketing, start with a traffic or lead generation campaign to get measurable results.
Step 3: Choose the Right Google Ads Campaign Type
Google Ads offers multiple campaign types, each suited for different marketing objectives. Search Ads — Text-based ads that appear on Google search results Display Ads — Image-based ads shown on websites, blogs, and apps Shopping Ads — Ads that showcase product images, prices, and links Video Ads — Video ads displayed on YouTube and other platforms Performance Max Ads — AI-driven ads that appear across all Google networks App Ads — Designed to promote mobile applications Beginners should start with Search Ads since they target users actively searching for specific keywords related to your business.
Step 4: Perform Keyword Research for Google Ads
Selecting the right Google Ads keywords ensures your ads reach the right audience. Use tools like Google Keyword Planner to find relevant, high-search-volume keywords related to your business. Focus on high-intent keywords that indicate user interest in purchasing, such as “best digital marketing course in Hyderabad” instead of generic terms like “digital marketing.” Also, use negative keywords to exclude irrelevant searches and avoid unnecessary ad spend.
Step 5: Define Your Target Audience and Location
A well-defined audience increases your Google Ads ROI by ensuring your ads reach the right people. Demographics — Filter audience based on age, gender, and income Location Targeting — Select cities, states, or countries where your business operates Device Targeting — Choose mobile or desktop users based on customer behavior Interests & Behavior — Target users based on their online activity and preferences For a local business, it’s best to target users within your area to attract potential customers effectively.
Step 6: Set Your Budget and Bidding Strategy
Google Ads operates on a pay-per-click (PPC) model, where you bid on keywords to display your ads. There are different bidding strategies based on your campaign goals. Cost-Per-Click (CPC) — Pay when someone clicks your ad, best for website traffic Cost-Per-Thousand-Impressions (CPM) — Pay per 1,000 ad views, ideal for brand awareness Cost-Per-Acquisition (CPA) — Pay when a user completes an action like filling out a form Beginners should start with manual CPC bidding to control their ad spend effectively.
Step 7: Write Compelling Google Ads Copy
A well-crafted ad copy grabs attention and encourages users to take action. Headline — Use strong, keyword-rich headlines like “Best Digital Marketing Course in Hyderabad” Description — Highlight key benefits and unique selling points of your product or service Call-To-Action (CTA) — Use action-driven phrases like “Enroll Now” or “Get a Free Trial” Ad Extensions — Add extra information like phone numbers, links, or location details Well-optimized ad copy increases click-through rates (CTR) and improves ad performance.
Step 8: Set Up Landing Pages for Your Ads
Your ads should lead to a high-converting landing page that delivers on the ad’s promise. Ensure the landing page is mobile-friendly, fast-loading, and optimized for conversions. Use clear CTAs, trust signals like testimonials, and concise content to engage visitors and drive action.
Step 9: Launch and Monitor Your Google Ads Campaign
Once you launch your ad campaign, monitoring its performance is essential. Use Google Ads dashboard to track metrics like CTR (Click-Through Rate), CPC (Cost-Per-Click), conversion rate, and ROAS (Return on Ad Spend). If an ad is underperforming, optimize it by adjusting keywords, refining the audience, improving ad copy, or increasing bids.
Step 10: Optimize Your Google Ads Campaign for Better Results
Regular Google Ads optimization ensures better performance and lower costs. A/B Testing — Test different headlines, descriptions, and CTAs to find the best-performing ads Keyword Refinement — Add negative keywords and update keyword lists based on performance Ad Scheduling — Show ads at specific times when your audience is most active Quality Score Improvement — Ensure high relevance between keywords, ads, and landing pages Retargeting Ads — Re-engage visitors who have previously interacted with your site Implementing these strategies helps reduce CPC, increase conversions, and improve ROI.
