Do you think "Daphne is the one handling the budget" is at all a popular headcanon for the Mystery Gang?
I like the idea of Daphne pulling out some reading glasses to do the gang's bookkeeping in the shotgun seat on long drives. The bankrolling is definitely Daphne and Shaggy (they're the ones that come from money), but it's probably still a pretty limited amount of money to work with just based on how young they are.
I want to say that Shaggy's money is in some kind of trust until he's 25. Meanwhile, Daphne does have an allowance, which is pretty big since her parents know she's traveling and they may not approve of the company she keeps, but they DO want her to be safe... but it's not enough to just spend willy nilly, considering she's the bulk of the funds for four people and one dog.
Someone has to plan out what they spend on, like... food and hygiene. Trap supplies. Laundromat usage. The occasional motel night if the elements are making 'sleep in the van' a bad idea. Phone plans, depending on the era. Health insurance if their parents don't have them on-plan (depends on the year). Car insurance (legally required). The van is old enough to require maintenance and have a pretty crappy mpg, so the gas budget is pretty high. Yearly inspections and other "let's not get stopped by the cops" stuff. Vet visits (vaccinations, teeth cleaning) for Scooby. Medication for various chronic conditions they may have. Replacing Velma's glasses when they get broken or her prescription changes. Fred's hair gel, which I assume he has. Shaggy's weed stipend. So much sunscreen. Etc.
Like they do have homes to go back to in case they truly run out of money, but it's still a lot to cover, and emergencies on the road do happen.
Modern setting Daphne just does an accounting course online and gets a CPA degree all in service of: 1. Managing the team's money 2. Catching bad guys via audit
(I'd suggest a correspondence course for an older setting but they're always on the move so idk how effective that would be.)

When my father could think of nothing to add to a funny or odd moment in a conservation, he’d let out a sarcastic “Nothing but the best.”
When a drunk guy on the street swore at us and made lewd gestures as we walked to get dinner in Cleveland one night, he looked over and said nothing but the best. When I showed him a particularly insane clip from Wondershowzen he liked, nothing but the best.
It was rare, however, that he had nothing to add, argue, or joke about when talking to me.
The last time I was able to have a long conversation with my dad, he told me he thought his personal knowledge base had a few spots of depth but that he didn’t know much. It was a rare moment of self-pity, one I felt was unearned since he was a person who knew a lot about everything. I challenged him. I began listing stories he told me about writers, actors, politicians, about history and economics. He knew about petty arguments Joni Mitchel had with her managers in the 60s. He explained the 2008 financial crisis to me in under a minute (likely during one of his furlough days when the government was shut down). He taped avant-garde short films on VHS so we could watch them together on the weekends. That’s how I ended up seeing Maya Deren’s “Meshes of the Afternoon” before entering high school, let alone a film course. His favorite short was “Down Rusty Down,” an Australian black-and-white comedy from 1997 where humans play various dogs in a neighborhood. We watched it for the first time together but he asked me 50 times over the last few years if I’d ever seen it. I wanted to scream every time that I was there with him for his entire indie cinema phase! Our shared movie viewings started when I was a child when he forced me to watch All That Jazz and Die Hard (inappropriate movies to watch with your kid) and ended around 2001 when we watched Y Tu Mama Tambien (an inappropriate movie to watch with your parent). It made me feel better that he didn’t even remember I was with him on this art house movie rabbit hole because it meant he liked it on his own, whether his kids did or not. He liked paintings, he hated musicals, he liked cooking and got better from my middle school years on. He subscribed to specific guitarists’ Patreon pages during the lockdown and watched his favorite musicians explain how they wrote old songs.
When my grandfather died, my brother told me what he thought makes a great dad. “It’s doing stuff you don’t want to do for your kids.” This was before he had kids of his own. He seems to enjoy attending as many of my nieces’ volleyball games as he can.
What my brother meant was that the sign of a good father was the ability to engage in your kids’ interests rather than strictly engaging in your own. Our dad was not a basketball player, but I have memories of him teaching me in our driveway how to box out. When my brother decided to become a CPA, my dad took accounting classes online so he could understand what my brother was talking about when he visited. He came to every play I was in from the age of 6, including shows I did in college that were, I’m sure, not to his taste. He gave notes on scripts and stories I wrote, he played guitar with me, he helped brainstorm ways to get an agent with me. He would preface each piece of advice with “I don’t really know how any of this works” and then make cogent, informed arguments about what I should do next. He treated every interest his kids and grandkids had like a hobby of his own.
When he was not busy being a dad, cheering in the stands of a football game or clapping in the audience of a play or in the kitchen making dinner for his wife and kids, he was reading, exploring, and finding tolerable classical music to listen to and share with all of us. He didn’t merely love the act of reading, he liked fiction specifically. He liked finding out about the craft of writing. He worked on novels and stories of his own after retirement. He liked comedy. His knowledge of it was specific and enigmatic. After taking a few pictures at the house of my friends and our homecoming dates, he asked where we were taking the girls for dinner. “Buca di Beppo,” I said (because I know how to treat a lady), and my dad said “oh, that’s where Phil Hartman’s wife got drunk for hours before going home and shooting him.” “Thank you, Dad. That’s a great icebreaker.”
When I got into stand-up myself, he pitched me jokes and essay prompts via email, even when he was ill. His last email to me was to let me know he thought a big break was approaching for me and that he and my mom did not sit up at night worrying that I couldn’t make it in comedy. "We have faith in your work and talent.”
One day, inspired by some mystery itch that came from no one in his family, my father started digging a hole in the backyard. He read through a tiny yellow pamphlet on how to build a pond, and with no help (certainly not from his kids, and before the days of YouTube), he made a mosquito-free pond in our yard. He put in fish that survived winters, he put in tadpoles that became frogs and hopped into neighbors’ yards. One morning, he came outside and discovered a giant crane hunting one of his frogs. He’d made an entire ecosystem thanks to one afternoon of reading and following through on a whim.
That’s what I’ll remember about him. Not strictly the things he did his damnedest to enjoy for us, but what he enjoyed.
He was married to my mother for 49 years. He studied city planning and managed to find work in his field. He focused on fighting for affordable housing and revitalizing neighborhoods including Ohio City where we lived for most of my teens. He was a good dad because he engaged in the stuff his kids and wife liked even when he disliked it (that included moving from the city to the suburbs for a time). But he was a great dad and friend because he managed to get me interested in what he liked. He took the time to listen, to watch, to talk. He let me know how much joy he took in his work. He let us know how much he loved being a dad and grandfather.
When I think of what he could have done better, I can’t come up with anything to say. He gave us nothing but his best.

CPA Study Material: Insights from Successful CPA Candidates
Preparing for the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) exam can be a daunting task. With its rigorous content and structure, candidates often feel overwhelmed. However, successful CPA candidates have shared valuable insights about their study materials and strategies. This blog will discuss essential tips and recommendations for effective CPA study material based on their experiences.
Understand the CPA Exam Structure
Before diving into CPA study material, it’s crucial to understand the exam's structure. The CPA exam consists of four sections:
Auditing and Attestation (AUD)
Business Environment and Concepts (BEC)
Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR)
Regulation (REG)
Each section covers specific topics, and understanding these will help you select appropriate study materials.
Choosing the Right CPA Study Material
Selecting the right CPA study material can significantly impact your exam preparation. Here are some popular options recommended by successful candidates:
CPA Review Courses: Many candidates benefit from comprehensive CPA review courses that provide structured learning. Courses like Becker, Wiley, and Roger are well-regarded in the CPA community.
Textbooks and Guides: Supplementing your study with textbooks can deepen your understanding. Books that cover the CPA exam topics in detail can be helpful.
Online Resources: Websites like Andrew Katz Tutoring offer online resources, including practice questions and study tips, which can enhance your study experience.
Flashcards: Creating flashcards for important concepts can be an effective study tool. They help reinforce learning and make it easier to review key points.
Practice Exams: Taking practice exams is crucial for exam preparation. They familiarize you with the exam format and help identify areas that need more focus.
Develop a Study Plan
Having a solid study plan is essential for effective preparation. Successful candidates often recommend the following:
Set a Study Schedule: Determine how many hours you can dedicate to studying each week and create a timetable that covers all sections of the CPA exam. Stick to this schedule as much as possible.
Break it Down: Divide your study material into manageable sections. Focusing on one topic at a time makes studying less overwhelming.
Regular Reviews: Set aside time each week to review previously studied material. This reinforcement helps retention and prepares you for the cumulative nature of the exam.
Utilize Study Groups
Joining a study group can be beneficial for many candidates. Here are some advantages:
Shared Resources: Study groups allow members to share study materials, notes, and insights that may enhance understanding.
Accountability: Being part of a group can motivate you to stay on track with your study schedule.
Diverse Perspectives: Discussing challenging topics with peers can provide new insights and different approaches to problem-solving.
Focus on Practice and Application
Understanding concepts is essential, but applying them is key to CPA exam success. Here’s how to focus on application:
Solve Problems: Work on as many practice problems as possible. This will not only test your understanding but also prepare you for the exam’s multiple-choice format.
Simulate Exam Conditions: Practice under timed conditions to get accustomed to the exam’s pace and pressure. This will help you manage your time effectively on the actual exam day.
Take Care of Your Well-Being
Lastly, remember to prioritize your well-being during your CPA studies. Here are a few tips:
Rest and Recovery: Ensure you get enough sleep and take regular breaks. Fatigue can hinder your ability to retain information.
Stay Active: Regular exercise can boost your mood and energy levels, helping you stay focused during study sessions.
Healthy Eating: A balanced diet can improve cognitive function and overall well-being.
Conclusion
In conclusion, effective CPA study material and a well-structured study plan are essential for success. By learning from the experiences of successful CPA candidates, you can choose the right materials, develop a solid study schedule, and maintain a healthy balance in your preparation. Consider exploring resources like Andrew Katz Tutoring to enhance your study experience. With dedication and the right approach, you can pass the CPA exam and advance your accounting career. Good luck!

As we welcome Q4 and you’re wondering how many pumpkin spiced lattes are too many to buy this season, I invite you to do the math on your taxes to give yourself a gut check on whether you’re in a refund or balance-due position with the IRS. Considering that bank interest rates are still 4.5% even after the September 2024 rate cut, this is no time to be prepaying the IRS if it’s unnecessary. That’s just too spooky!
At a high-level, the math is simple, “What do I owe for the year less what have I paid already?”, but the additional steps to reach ‘taxable income’ is where things get a bit trickier.
As of October, the year is in a lot of ways fully baked in terms of estimated compensation. Generally, companies pay bonuses and give raises at the beginning of the year, so at this point most salaried folks can estimate their total annual taxable income with some reasonable assurance.
Steps to Estimate Your Tax Position:
Step 1: Download your most recent paystub
Step 2: Calculate Year-to-Date (YTD) Taxable Income by subtracting pre-tax benefits from Gross Pay:
Gross Pay YTD (Includes salary, commission, bonus, imputed pay. Does not include non-taxable reimbursements)
-  401k deductions YTD
-  Medical, Dental, Vision deductions YTD
-  FSA/HSA deductions YTD
= YTD Taxable Income
Step 3: Calculate Remaining Pay Periods Taxable Income (same as Step 2, just for current pay period)
Taxable Income of most recent pay period (single pay-period)
x  # of remaining pay periods in year
= Taxable Income of Remaining Pay periods
(Most companies pay twice a month, but double check if you’re paid every two weeks or monthly to understand how many pay periods are remaining in the year)
Step 4: Calculate Estimated Annual Taxable Income
YTD Taxable Income
+ Taxable Income of the Remaining Pay periods
= Estimated Annual Taxable Income
Step 5: Use an Online Tax Calculator* and Input your Estimated Annual Taxable Income to find out your Federal Income Tax liability
Federal Income Tax amount from the calculator
- Federal Income Tax withholding on your YTD paystub
= Amount of Federal Income Tax you owe before year-end
(When looking at your paystub, ignore withholdings for Social Security and Medicare, those are not included in income tax calculations. Federal Income Tax is totally separate from social taxes.)
Step 6: Estimate Federal Income Tax you will pay in the remaining pay periods
Federal Income Tax withheld each pay period (from paystub)
x # remaining pay periods in the year
= Amount of Federal Income Tax you WILL pay in via payroll by year-end
If what you owe (Step 5) is less than what you will pay in (Step 6), you might be getting a refund.
If what you owe is more than what you will pay in, prepare for a balance due.
Side Hustles/Multiple Income Sources
Depending on if you’re a math/excel person or not, you could expand this exercise and add in your side hustle taxable income, bank interest, and dividends. Having multiple sources of income makes this tax exercise very important.
Remember that unless you have edited your company payroll settings to increase your tax withholding, your W-2 job is only withholding tax as if you only had that one job. If you have a side hustle, it’s a good idea to increase your W-4 form withholding taxes so that you can pay in more tax via payroll to cover the additional tax owed as a result of side hustles.
The advanced money-hack strategy is to pay in ONLY the required estimated tax and never overpay the IRS via withholdings (so the IRS owes you a refund). That means you just gave Uncle Sam an interest-free loan when you could be making interest on your own money. Interest rates on HYSA (high-yield savings accounts) are at 4.5% even after the September 2024 federal rate cut.
If all of this scares you more than a haunted house, then reach out to your CPA to do the math for you. These are of course estimates, but doing a Q4 tax check-in will help to relieve year-end anxiety around tax planning and give you a better idea of potential payments or refunds.
Notes
i) For simplicity, the equations above are only for Federal Income Tax estimates. Repeat this exercise with State Income Tax Calculators and paystub information to estimate your state liability.
ii) The IRS has an underpayment penalty safe harbor (no penalties) if you pay in at least:
90% of the current year liability OR
100% of the previous year liability (110% of previous year if you make more than $150k)
iii) The true money-hack strategy would be to stick to the minimum amounts to avoid penalties so you can maximize the cash in your HYSA. It’s important to always have cash set aside for taxes, but Uncle Sam doesn’t need to be holding your cash and making your interest if it’s not yet technically due.
iv) This exercise assumes your paycheck will not change over Q4 (ex: you don’t change 401k withholdings or get a large year-end bonus). It’s also a good time to review your YTD 401k contributions and decide if you’d like to change it by year end. The 2024 401k employee deferral is $23k.
Glossary:
Payroll Withholding - ‘withholding’ refers to a tax amount being subtracted from your paycheck.
Payroll Deduction - ‘deduction’ refers to a benefit amount being subtracted from your paycheck (Health Insurance, Life Insurance, Transit funds).
Taxable Income - All income (salaries, bonuses, commissions, other imputed items like gift cards from your employer) less pre-tax deductions (401k, medical insurance, FSA or HSA health plan, Parking/Transit deductions).
Imputed Income - These are things that your employer pays for you that the IRS sees as ‘taxable income’. Think of holiday gift card handouts, paying for gym memberships on your behalf, additional life/disability insurance.
This is not tax, legal or accounting advice. This material has been prepared for informational purposes only, and is not intended to provide, and should not be relied on for, tax, legal or accounting advice. Important Subjects in Corporate Taxation for CPAs and How to Stay Current
Corporate taxation is a complex field, and Certified Public Accountants must stay informed of the latest developments to provide the best possible service to their clients. With the constant changes in tax laws, regulations, and interpretations, CPAs are faced with the challenge of not only keeping up with the latest updates but also understanding how they impact different entities such as corporations, nonprofits, and hedge funds. Continuing Professional Education (CPE) is essential for CPAs to maintain their licenses and stay current with the knowledge required to navigate this complex landscape.
In this article, we will discuss some of the critical subjects in the world of corporate taxation that CPAs need to be aware of and explore why CPE Inc. is an excellent choice for earning CPE credits while staying on top of these issues with their tax CPE courses.
Federal Tax Updates
The federal tax code undergoes regular changes, and staying updated is crucial for seasoned tax practitioners. These updates can impact a wide range of tax-related issues, including income tax, corporate tax rates, and deductions.
CPAs need to understand the implications of these changes on their clients' tax liabilities and compliance requirements.
Form 990
Nonprofits have unique tax considerations, primarily centered around Form 990, which they must file annually with the IRS. This form provides a detailed report of the organization’s finances, activities, and governance. Understanding the intricacies of Form 990 is essential for CPAs who work with nonprofits to ensure compliance and avoid penalties.
Forms 1120 & 1120S
Forms 1120 and 1120S are essential for corporate tax reporting, with Form 1120 used for regular corporations and Form 1120S for S corporations.
These forms require detailed information about a corporation’s income, deductions, and credits. A thorough understanding of these forms is crucial for CPAs to accurately report a corporation's financial situation and ensure compliance with federal tax laws.
Hedge Fund Taxation
Hedge fund taxation is a specialized area that involves complex rules and regulations. CPAs working in this area need to understand issues such as partnership tax returns, carried interest, and international tax implications. Additionally, staying updated on new developments in hedge fund taxation is critical due to the ever-changing nature of financial markets and regulations.
K-1s
Schedule K-1 is a tax document used to report income, deductions, and credits from partnerships, S corporations, and estates and trusts. CPAs must be skilled in preparing, analyzing, and interpreting K-1s to accurately report the financial details of these entities.

Education as the Catalyst for Career Advancement: Unlocking New Horizons
In the modern world, education is the catalyst that propels individuals toward professional growth and long-term success. Whether through formal degrees, vocational training, or online certifications, education shapes a person's career trajectory by equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a competitive job market. Beyond simply landing a job, education is critical in unlocking new career opportunities, fostering leadership skills, and ensuring adaptability in a rapidly changing workforce.
This article will explore the transformative impact of education on career advancement and how lifelong learning can open doors to personal and professional success.
Equipping Individuals with In-Demand Skills
One of the most immediate ways education contributes to career growth is by equipping individuals with the necessary skills for their chosen professions. Specific skills are required in many industries to perform tasks effectively and meet job expectations. Whether it's mastering a technical skill like coding or developing expertise in data analysis, education provides a structured environment for individuals to acquire these critical competencies.
As industries evolve, new skills become increasingly in demand. For example, the rise of digital marketing has led professionals to pursue specialized courses in SEO, content strategy, and social media management. Similarly, healthcare professionals may seek additional training in telemedicine or patient care technologies to stay relevant. By continuously building on their skill sets, individuals remain competitive and increase their chances of career progression.
Furthermore, educational programs often provide hands-on experiences through internships, projects, or lab work, allowing students to apply their skills in real-world scenarios. These practical experiences enhance a person's transition into a new role or responsibility.
Expanding Career Opportunities
Education opens doors to career opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach. Employers often look for candidates with a solid educational foundation, as it demonstrates commitment, discipline, and the ability to learn and grow. Certain professions, particularly law, medicine, and engineering, require specific degrees or certifications to enter the industry. For those looking to advance in their careers, obtaining further education, such as a master's degree or a professional certification, can significantly broaden their prospects.
For example, an accountant with a bachelor's degree may need more advancement opportunities. However, pursuing a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential or a master's in accounting could lead to management positions, consulting roles, or even opportunities to work in specialized areas like forensic accounting. Similarly, teachers who pursue advanced degrees often become eligible for administrative roles, such as principals or district supervisors. In a globalized economy, education not only increases access to new job opportunities but also opens the door to working internationally. Global companies seek highly educated professionals to lead their operations across borders.
Fostering Leadership Qualities
In addition to technical expertise, education is crucial in developing leadership qualities that are essential for career advancement. Many educational programs, particularly at the graduate and executive levels, strongly emphasize leadership development. Students are often required to engage in teamwork, manage projects, and lead initiatives, all of which are critical experiences that translate directly into workplace leadership.
For example, an MBA program typically includes strategic management, organizational behavior, and leadership courses. These courses teach students how to make effective decisions, manage teams, and think critically about business challenges. Students are often exposed to case studies and real-world business scenarios, allowing them to practice leadership skills in a controlled environment.
Leadership is about managing people, setting a vision, solving problems, and inspiring others. Education helps individuals develop these essential qualities, making them more attractive candidates for promotions and leadership roles.
Adapting to Industry Changes
The global economy constantly evolves, driven by technological advancements, consumer behavior changes, and industry standards shifts. To remain competitive, professionals must adapt to these changes and continue to develop new skills. Education provides the framework for individuals to stay current with industry trends and adapt to new challenges.
Continuous learning is particularly important in rapidly transforming industries like information technology, healthcare, and finance. In IT, for instance, professionals who stay ahead of trends like artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and cybersecurity are likelier to thrive in an environment of constant technological advancement. Similarly, healthcare workers who embrace new technologies like telehealth, medical AI, or robotic surgery will be better positioned to advance in their careers.
By committing to lifelong education, individuals can remain agile and responsive to shifts in the job market, ensuring they continue to grow within their chosen fields.
Building Professional Networks
Education also allows for the building of a strong professional network that supports career growth. Educational environments, whether on-campus or online, enable individuals to connect with peers, mentors, and industry professionals. These connections can prove invaluable when seeking career advice, job referrals, or potential business partnerships.
For instance, attending industry conferences as part of an educational program can introduce students to leaders in their field, while group projects help foster collaboration and networking with peers. Additionally, alumni networks from colleges and universities often serve as lifelong resources, offering job placement services, networking events, and access to exclusive career opportunities. The relationships formed during educational experiences often extend beyond the classroom, providing long-term benefits for career advancement.
Lifelong Learning as the Path to Success
Education is more than just a stepping stone to a job—it is a powerful tool that drives career advancement and personal growth. From acquiring technical skills to fostering leadership qualities, education equips individuals with the knowledge and abilities needed to excel in their careers. Moreover, education opens doors to new opportunities, helping professionals reach higher-paying roles, transition into new industries, or pursue international careers.
In an ever-changing workforce, the commitment to lifelong learning ensures that individuals remain adaptable, competitive, and prepared for challenges. By embracing education as a lifelong journey, professionals can unlock new horizons and confidently shape their careers.
