Let’s talk about Pygmalion. ONEUS recently dropped their new logo motion for their 9th mini album Pygmalion. So, who or what is Pygmalion? It can refer to one of two things. 

First is the myth of Pygmalion and Galatea. Pygmalion was a talented sculptor in Ancient Greece, most known for his ivory statue's life like appearances. Because of his work as a sculptor, putting beauty into ivory, he did not have time to admire actual women and their beauty. He saw flaws in the way women were portraying themselves and therefore decided to only concentrate on his ivory statues. One day, he carved a statue of woman in what he believed to be beauty. he carved this woman from ivory, sculpting her carefully so she could be unparallel to any other woman he had ever seen. He carved her in his image of beauty, and when Pygmalion was done, he stepped back and admired her. In his eyes, his ivory statue was the most beautiful woman, and he falls in love with his own creation. He showers this statue in gifts, kisses her with such care, decorating her with the cloths and ornaments. He spent countless days and nights, a sense of joy overcoming him. He was so in love with his ivory woman, whom he named Galatea, and wished for her to be his wife. Eventually, Aphrodite’s festival comes around, and Pygmalion makes an offering to the goddess. He prays to her, venerating so deeply, that she would make Galatea into a real woman. Aphrodite, touched by Pygmalion’s deep veneration, decided to see this statue. When she saw Galatea, she was amazed by how life like the statue was and how close to beauty the statue was to her. So, she granted Pygmalion’s wish, answered his prayers and made Galatea into a real woman. That night, when Pygmalion returned to his workshop, he kissed Galatea and was shocked to feel how warm her lips were, and how soft she was to touch. Pygmalion was overjoyed to learn that Aphrodite answered his prayers. Years later, Pygmalion and Galatea had a son named Paphos together. Truly, a story about the love an artist has for their own creation.

The second is something called the Pygmalion effect. The Pygmalion effect refers to situations where someone's high expectations improve our behavior and therefore our performance in a given area. Presented by psychologists Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson, high expectations lead to better performance and low expectations lead to worse, both effects leading to self-fulfilling prophecy, a prediction that comes true in part of a set expectation or belief. The opposite of the Pygmalion effect is the Galatea effect, which one’s belief in themselves increases their performance.

Now, looking at the new logo, we can see a white background, most likely referring to the ivory that Galatea was made from or the high expectations from someone else. Then a drop happens, then suddenly the white is stained and overcome with black, covering on an otherwise ethereal white. It is no longer unblemished, no longer beautiful in the eyes of the beholder. The expectations someone placed on were wrong, and we failed them in their eyes. We may not think we failed, but to them we did. The logo shatters, leaving nothing but shards left to be picked up or forgotten.

Now knowing what Pygmalion means, the myth and the effect, what could this mean? In terms of the monarchs, could it refer to them, once bright rulers now forgotten by the ones they loved? Could it be that the monarchs are the “Galatea” of this story, someone, Helios perhaps or someone new, made them who they are and have high expectations for them? Are the monarchs no longer loved or have failed expectations? Who knows? Only time will tell.

Questions:

1. Between 7 and 5, who did you bias first?

I biased Woozi before Junji because I've had Seventeen as one of my favorite groups since Seventeen had their debut in 2015 (so years before OnlyOneOf had their debut in 2019).

2. Between 2 and 6, who are you more attached to?

Well that's just rude! Between Junhui and Wonwoo... part of my attachment is the two of them together! Maybe very marginally to Junhui because he was part of why Seventeen initially caught my interest.

3. If you were to spend the day with either 3 or 1, who would you choose and what would you do?

I think that I would pick Rie. He's closer to me in age, and I feel like we'd have more to discuss, though we have less in common language wise. Honestly, I'd want to show him around Seattle, especially good food and Cap Hill. From what he seemed to like in the states on tour, I think he'd enjoy Seattle.

4. What is your favorite physical feature about 9?

Not precisely a physical feature, but the way Kazuha holds herself from years of ballet and her poise and posture and flexibility is incredible!

5. What is your favorite part of 6's personality?

I enjoy that Wonwoo is often quiet and reserved and off the wall funny. He's got a kind of unidol-like personality, but he loves music and what they do so much. I love how much he loves singing.

6. If you were to tell 8 anything you wanted, what you would you tell them?

I'd tell Sunoo that I love his voice and am proud of how hard he's worked to develop his skills. I'd also tell him to not worry about when he needs to take care of his health and put that first.

7. Between 1 and 2, whose closet would you raid?

Rie's closet, though both he and Junhui have lots of things I'd happily wear. Actually this is a little hard because stylistically Rie, but I could probably actually just wear a lot of Junhui's clothes, but I'm notably taller than Rie and wouldn't necessarily share sizes with him, though all the OnlyOneOf members seem to share clothes between them, and I'm very close to of a size with some of them.

8. What is a style that you want to see 3 try?

I love that Jay has been outspoken about keeping his hair dark, and I enjoy his approach to jewelry a lot of the time. I want to encourage him to wear more vibrant colors I guess. He honestly usually has an excellent sense of what looks good on him.

9. Between 5 and 4, who are you closer to in height?

Having stood next to Junji, I'm about 3 cm shorter than him. In theory, I'm more than 3 cm taller than Yunjin, but having seen her standing with a bunch of the Hybe boys, either she's rather taller than stated or they're a lot shorter than stated, so she might actually be pretty close to me in height. Officially I'm closer to Junji in height though.

10. Between 10 and 9, whose music do you like the best?

Between Le Sserafim and Oneus? That is really hard honestly. I really enjoy both, and Oneus has the much larger body of work, and with it more songs that aren't my jam. I'm going to have to go with Le Sserafim (Kazuha), but honestly it depends on the song.

I just had a terrifying thought... What if Xikers dropped out of RTK because Ateez is going to be in Kingdom again? Like... if they are making RTK they are making Kingdom right? Has their been any news about it? And if Oneus is back for RTK then Ateez could in theory be invited back for Kingdom.... But they wouldn't want them competing against each other if Xikers won. ..... God I hope I'm not right. They don't need that trauma and they are way beyond that.

No Diggity Analysis

This is more my observations and beginnings of analysis, I’ll need to peer review, however, here are my thoughts of imagery and meanings in Oneus’ No Diggity.

Each Oneus member would represent a tarot card (teasers)

Ravn - The Hanged Man

His imagery literally had his leg tied like the hanged man. Also has bear traps in his soul shots, which would be connected to the hanged man, as the hanged man traps himself. The Hanged Man tarot card is about sacrifice. However, this card goes well with the negative cards, such as The Tower and The Devil, it’s not really a card I would like to get when doing a tarot reading.

Seoho - The Tower

This card suggests chaos, and in many designs is on fire. Seoho’s solo shots feature a tall structure on fire, which is part of the basis of assigning him this card. The other part is his general vibes like he is going to bring chaos (he’s also the only one to break something in the mv). It’s another card I would not like to get during a tarot reading.

Leedo - Strength

During his teaser, he roars, like a lion and moves like a lion. Which is the imagery used for strength in tarot typically, which is why I think he would represent strength. This is a nice card to receive during a reading.

Keonhee - The Devil

Before the MV, I would have thought that it was Dongju who was the devil, however, my mind has been changed. Keonhee has skulls in his solo shots and is the only one with dancers (and I think he has some control over them). This card is almost never good to get during a reading.

Hwanwoong - The Emperor

This card is about authority, Hwanwoong has the whole big brother thing going on, a security camera and guards, all three have connotations of authority. This card is good to get in a reading. Lowkey though, I struggled with figuring out what tarot card he represents.

Xion - Temperance

Lowkey, originally thought he was the Devil, however, his mask seems more representative of what an angel is actually supposed to look like according to Ezekiel 1, “Now as I beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with his four faces. The appearance of the four wheels and their work was like unto the colour of a beryl: and they four has one likeness: and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel.” and “As for their rings, they were so high that they were dreadful; and their rings were full of eyes round about them four.” I will provide images. Temperance is about balance, and calm. Throughout the MV, Dongju has the least “joker” energy, he’s just vibing, living his best life. A good card.

Pairs and Two Sides

In TBONTB, there were 3 pairs, representing the past, present and future. Ravn and Hwanwoong as the past, Dongju and Keonhee as the present and Leedo and Seoho as the future.

Personally, I think, within these pairs, there’s a “good” or angelic side, and a “bad” or devilish side.

As in my tarot card analysis, I pointed out, some cards are better than others, which Hwanwoong, Dongju and Leedo represent. These three also have the white suits and coloured clouds shots. What the clouds and the colours represent, I’m not sure, but this is my basis for separating Oneus into a devil and angel side. 

Also within each pair, the tarot cards, in a way can be considered opposites of each other. 

Ravn and Hwanwoong

The Hanged Man has given up on authority, and in a reading, if paired with the Emperor suggests that there is a dominant man in your life where conflicts can be resolved with passivity. (if paired with The Empress, then there’s a dominant woman)

Hwanwoong is the one, I believe who ties up Ravn’s leg, due to Hwanwoong pulling on his own wires, and the next shot shows Ravn dragged by his leg. Ravn then ends up by the eye tv, which is Hwanwoong’s imagery. This could suggest a switch in sides, maybe idk.

Dongju and Keonhee

These two I think are the driving force. As Temperance is an angel, and obviously The Devil, is the devil, these two would have the most conflict. However, I’ll need to spend more time analysing their scenes. Keonhee’s end scene has the same or similar shade of blue as Xion’s scene earlier (I will also be providing pictures), however, Xion is surrounded by it and almost blends in, he looks more ethereal, while Keonhee stands out and is walking away from it. What this means, I don’t know. 

Leedo and Seoho

An important thing about The Tower is that it’s damaged, either it’s on fire or crumbling, it symbolises sudden change, while in reverse symbolises a fear of change, while strength symbolises courage, compassion and inner strength. Courage can be seen when Leedo is shot at and he doesn’t flinch. Seoho doesn’t seem to be afraid, so I believe that he is a force that will bring change.

I may make another post going more in-depth with the tarot cards.

Angels

I will also need to make another post about the devils because I need to do more analysis and research. 

Hwanwoong

As stated previously, angels have a lot of eyes. Hwanwoong’s most striking imagery is the eyes on the TV. This is another way I think he’s connected to angels.

Dongju

Due to his ethereal shot in the white suit, this made me realise he wasn’t the devil. His mask has a resemblance to the appearance of angels, so this is what connects him to angels.

Leedo

The fire behind him looks like wings and angels are also connected to fire.

None of that was super detailed, but like, I was focusing on tarot.

I should also research more biblical imagery because that’s definitely a key feature.

Let’s talk about the word Malus. The word Malus has three definitions.

Firstly, Malus refers to a genus of apple shrubs and trees, and those fruit also contain seeds full of cyanide. Apples are most famously depicted as the forbidden fruit in the Bible story Adam and Eve, where Eve disobeys God by eating the apple from the Tree of Knowledge, tempted to her by the serpent. A serpent that was residing in the Garden of Eden.

Secondly, Malus is a Latin word that means bad, morally or physically evil. It’s a word that is associated with the Ancient Greek word mélas, which can be translated to “dark or black���, and many figures are named as such in Ancient Greek stories, such as a man who wanted to go on an expedition against the city of Corinth. Corinth… where Helios was being worshipped.

Thirdly, Malus is the definition to a financial penalty incurred by a banker, trader, or investor when a deal results in a loss. The loss is usually due to a discovery of a defect in a product that results in poor performance. Something that wasn’t supposed to be there made it fail.

Now knowing what Malus means:

Ok, theory time, based on the teaser photos, Ravn seems to symbolize the dark side while Woong represents the light? The photos are so contrasting in mood. Maybe Ravn = dark side after they died, which matches the R.I.P. theory (RAVN Is Pretty, RAVN Is Perfect, R I P)

Meanwhile, Woong = still living, before they died? I mean his unicorn cake hair-ahem

Or maybe, it means that only some of them sacrifice themselves to protect the child, while the other survived to continue protecting the child. Ravn is one of the monarchs who died, while Hwanwoong is one of them that is still alive.
