Nachdem ich 2018 diesen kleinen Kalender gekauft hatte, kam mir die Idee, diesen auch wirklich zu „nutzen“. Was ich dann in 2019 auch umsetzte. Außer jeden Tag drauf zu schauen, ein Kalenderblatt abzureißen, nahm ich mir vor, das jeweilige Album am gleichen Tag auch zu hören. Gleichzeitig schaue ich nach ob ich das Album in meiner Sammlung habe und wenn es mir gefällt, oder ich tatsächlich „schwerwiegende“ Lücken in meinem Regal entdecke, dann kauf‘ ich das Album nach. Bad Breeding, Exiled (One Little Indian / Iron Lung, 2019)

Honestly, the third album of the Stevenage, UK, anarcho-hardcore unit Bad Breeding is TOO good. Irritatingly so. First of all, it was produced by Ben Greenberg, who made sure that every second of it would sound like an actual nightmare: dark, heavy and too real. The sound is captivating and draws from modern hardcore, noise rock, classic anarcho punk. 

The packaging is an absolutely great looking homage to Crass Records-style fold-out jackets with lyrics and a political essay that makes a very sensible point about hate as a weapon and the cold class war that’s going on in Great Britain. What really struck me about the political perspective of both the lyrics and the essay is how timely they are: Bad Breeding aren’t aping the anarcho bands of lore, they aren’t using anarchy and 1984-style paranoia to play a part; they’re talking about their concerns as people in Britain in 2019. 

Every song has something that makes it stand out, mostly thanks to a knack for great hardcore punk songwriting. Listen to the driving rhythm fueled by the sudden stops on “Clear Blue Water”; to “Breaking Wheel”, that kinda sounds like if Pissed Jeans were on Crass Records and I don’t think anybody’s ever done that; to the dissonant skronk of "Tortured Reality”. We’ve heard countless songs that sound like the saxophone-smeared dirge of “Theatre of Work”. It seems everybody feels the need to slow down at one point and send a slimy, belligerent snail crawling through the grooves. Few, though, sound like they know what they’re doing as much as Bad Breeding do.

So, irritatingly good: the “problem" here is it’s all spot-on. As negative-minded punks, we have a natural distrust for things that are well done. For God’s sake, Bad Breeding even have the nerve to promote their records and tour with a great-sounding backline. Yeah, I know, "psh, fucking posers". You pick: stay in your comfort zone, or enjoy one of the finest punk records to come out in recent years.

Vinyl Corner : God Damn 'God Damn'

Vinyl Corner is a feature where we take a look at vinyl pressings of various albums and weigh them up to see just how good they sound, how well they're pressed and what sort of packaging to expect - as well as giving a brief overview of the music itself. For today's instalment, we're rating a new release from diverse indie label One Little Indian. The Music: UK alt-rockers God Damn have been melding the snotty-nosed gumption of grunge rock with the ferocious bombast of doom metal for the best part of a decade now. Their latest effort, an eponymous third outing arrives courtesy of One Little Indian. The group certainly don't seek to reinvent the wheel here but their work has sufficient grit to appeal to those with a taste for thick riffage and pounding drums. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-Y-bxOMLG0 The Pressing: Arriving on heavyweight milky clear vinyl, this is certainly an eye catching slab of wax. God Damn's brand of rock is still pretty loud even during its few quieter moments, so the volume alone is enough to mask any minor surface noise that might exist with this pressing from Germany's Optimal Media. Even so, credit must be given to the plant for producing a very solid disc here, with clean surfaces throughout. It should be said, though, that the production is grimy to a fault and certainly precludes this album from being an audiophile's delight - and the brickwalled mastering doesn't help either. The Packaging: Packaging and presentation is very solid on this release. The cover art is very distinctive and the non-gatefold cover is made from a decent mid-weight card stock. A printed lyric inner sleeve is also included, which certainly makes for a welcome addition, and a download code is also present. Enjoyed this feature?
