Morocco: Tangier to Marrakesh

My friend, Katherine and I wanted to have a change of environment and to spend less money for our trip for the holy week. So we decided to spend a week in Morocco. The plan was to fly from Madrid to Tangier, take the overnight train to Marrakesh and stay a few nights there, do a desert tour from Marrakesh, take a train back to Tangier, do a day trip to Chefchaouen, and finally fly back to Madrid. I know, it sounds a lot, but it wasn’t really as complicated as we thought it would be.

Actually, the plan above is just the second plan and the one that we did follow. The original plan was to follow the itinerary of a friend and do it clockwise on the map, passing by Chefchaouen and Fes on the way to the desert. However, a friend of mine decided to join us and he was flying into Marrakesh from Singapore. So to make life easier for him, we decided to make a second plan, which is the one mentioned above.

GETTING YOUR MOROCCAN DIRHAMS

Moroccan dirham is the local currency and a Euro is about 10 DH. I don’t know about you but I really don’t feel like making a bank withdrawal outside Spain, so I decided to bring cash and figured I would have it exchanged in the airport. The rate at the airport was not that bad, and I didn’t even have to pay for any commission.

FROM TANGIER TO MARRAKESH

After having our Dirhams, we took a cab to the train station so we could buy our train tickets going to Marrakesh. We paid 120DH, which followed the official price list that they had at the airport.

Here’s the thing, if you do not have a Moroccan credit card, you won’t be able to purchase your train tickets in advance. I was pretty excited when I learned that they actually have a website for their trains and that you can purchase your train tickets in advance. The whole page is in French so if you have a friend, like Katherine whose minor in the university was French, use that friend. But the thing is, the website only accepts payments from credit cards issued in Morocco. So if you don’t have that one, forget it.

OVERNIGHT TRAIN FROM TANGIER TO MARRAKESH

The website said that there are several train schedules from Tangier to Marrakesh daily. I remember seeing a 15.00, 21.00 and 00.00mn. Since we arrived at 14.30, it was safe to just take the 9:00, even though it meant we would have to wait for 6 long hours. However, when we reached the train station, we were told that there was only one train leaving for Marrakesh, and it was leaving at 00.05am.

I know right. 9 hours waiting time. But it’s not like we can do anything about it, so we just bought a first class roundtrip ticket which cost 654DH. Then, we decided to hang around the mall which was right in front of the train station. We stayed there for 7 hours, ate our lunch and dinner while we were at it. Then at 10pm, we decided to go to the station and wait for our train.

MOROCCAN HOGWARTS EXPRESS

In my country (Philippines), we don’t have overnight trains so it was my first time being in one. There are second class cars, which do not have a reserved seating. Each compartment in a second-class car has 8 seats. Meanwhile, the first class cars have reserved seating and each compartment has 6 seats. There are also cars which have bunk beds on them but we already found our tickets quite expensive, so we decided to settle in the first class car.

It was pretty exciting, it was like being in a compartment of Hogwarts Express, if Hogwarts Express had uncomfortable seats and small legroom. I’m not really complaining, and we already expected the worst to happen so it felt okay at the time. I’m just trying to say if I had more money, I would definitely buy a bunk bed car ticket.
