I grew up in an environment where "healthy” outlets for athletes were mainstream sports; baseball, basketball, football, hockey, soccer etc. The school system, county officials, and others in charge of youth recreation still hadn’t found ways to provide “alternative” outlets for individuals interested in participating in activities that were away from the “mainstream” 🏈 • • Today it’s common understanding that Skateboarding, Surfing, Snowboarding, BMX, Motocross and many other “extreme” sports interest a much wider percentage of our youth. Hosting the @vertical_blue Master Class w/ @willtrubridge & @deanfreediver is certainly one of the highlights in my short "career" as a Professional Freediving Instructor 💫 • • Although I've been Spearfishing since childhood it was only recently (6 years ago) that I took my very first Freedive Class with @performancefreediving in Kona. There I met a couple (Ren & Ashley Chapman) owners of @evolvefreediving who opened my eyes to the possibilities of what humans are capable of achieving on a single breath of air 🐳 • • At the time I thought diving to 30M/100ft was an extraordinary accomplishment - in some ways it is 🙌 But I was simply amazed to discover Ashley -a female who was relatively new to the sport of Freediving- was diving to over and 60M WITHOUT FINS!!! • • I trained for a bit and managed to figure out some equalization techniques and got myself (WITH fins) and considerable difficulty to 60M/200ft but I quickly plateaued - mostly due to lack of guidance 😤 • • Last year I got motivated again and organized an Advanced Equalization Class w/ @chambersbelow for myself and a group of friends and was amazed to quickly adopt Kurt's training techniques for depth adaptation and improve my progress again to over 90M/300ft🤙 • • Last week at Vertical Blue I dedicated myself to 5-days of No-Fins diving -for pretty much the 1st time ever outside of the pool- and was amazed to glide easily to 50M/165ft with Will and Dean coaching and encouraging 🙏 • • My point being is that "quality" Instruction in Freediving or any activity you enjoy CAN & WILL improve your knowledge and performance.
