On the Separation of the Straw Hat Crew during Sabaody Archipelago and its Effect on the Story
So when I first got into One Piece back in July of 2023, I already knew a couple of plot points that were going to happen. I just didn't know exactly when those things would happen and how they affected other plot points down the line.
Some of the things that I knew would happen but didn't know when were: the crew getting separated, the death of Luffy's brother Ace, and a two year time skip.
I knew these things would happen before I started reading the manga, I just did not know at which points in the manga these things would happen. I did not know they happened one right after the other. I did not know how these events all lead into each other.
I did not know that the order of events went: the crew is separated -> thus Luffy is alone at Marineford and isn't strong enough to save Ace -> so he decides to take a two year break from piracy to train and become stronger.
These events all lead into each other in ways that I did not know going into the manga. And that makes these events all the more painful because I thought Luffy would be with his crew when Ace died so that they could comfort him.
Like before reading, I genuinely thought that the crew would have a big group hug or something, to be a shoulder to cry on for Luffy once Ace died. And that! didn't happen! And it HURTS SO MUCH.
The crew is separated by Bartholomew Kuma at Sabaody. This event traumatized Luffy and as a reader, I remember being hit with the knowledge that "oh, yeah, this is the event other fans talk about when referencing the crew being separated." This is probably the lowest point for Luffy so far in the series. Unmatched until Ace's literal death at Marineford. And since I didn't know the order of events when I started reading, I had assumed wrong when I thought that the other Straw Hats would be there to comfort Luffy when Ace died. I was so very wrong.
I will never forget the sinking realization that I had while reading the manga that Luffy would be alone when Ace got killed. And I say "alone" as in he was without the rest of the Straw Hat Crew. I know Jinbei, Iva and the Okamas, Hancock, the Whitebeard pirates, etc were there supporting him but he was alone for all intents and purposes because his crew wasn't there. Not because they didn't want to be there with him of course but because Kuma had forcibly separated them. It turned out that Kuma had good intentions with that but it did still leave Luffy "alone" for the most traumatic moment of his life. I will never forget the dread I felt while reading Impel Down and Marineford proper when I figured out that the crew would not be reuniting any time soon.
Learning that the separation of the crew made Luffy feel weak made it make sense for me why he decided to take a two year break to train. I had wondered what the point of the time-skip was before I had gotten to that point. But it all made sense now.
And it makes Luffy's desperate loneliness at the separation hurt all the more.
Luffy realizes what he still has left. His crew. Even though they were separated. He wants to reunite with them and thinks back to how Ace asked them to take care of him. Luffy knows he's in good hands even though his big brother is dead now. But his crew is far away.
And it all circles back around to them being separated on Sabaody. Separated by Kuma. Who had to become a Warlord because Ace himself had taken out a previous Warlord, leaving a spot open for Kuma to be forced into and later separate the Straw Hats.
This whole sequence of events all lead into each other in ways I could have never predicted.
If Ace had never defeated that previous Warlord, then Kuma might not have ever been made a Warlord to replace him. Then Kuma wouldn't have been there in Sabaody to separate the Straw Hats. Then Luffy wouldn't have been "alone" at Marineford when Ace died. It's all connected.

Spoilers for Chapter 1100
If you have experienced emotional damage in the form of screaming, crying or throwing up from the newest chapter of One Piece, you may be entitled to financial compensation.
This chapter shows how Kuma traded his free will for Bonney's cure. By giving up his mind, body and soul to the world government, Kuma is once again forced into a form of slavery. It's the ultimate sacrifice, and understandable why Kuma never wanted Bonney to learn what he did for her.
The six month period of curing Bonney is heartbreaking. I can't believe everyone, Kizaru included, lived together acting like everything was fine for Bonney's sake. She must have had no idea anything was wrong until Kuma stopped contacting her. Which, according to the timeline, is very recent. Her cure, eventual escape and becoming a pirate could have happened just a few months before Sabaody.
This chapter also continues laying the foundation for Kizaru potentially leaving the marines. Just like Aokiji, Kizaru is bearing witness to an extreme tragedy committed by the world government. Plus his connection to Sentomaru, this six month period, and doing the Nika dance (!!) all give him an emotional connection to Bonney. Since Bonney later escapes her captivity, I'm willing to bet that Kizaru turned a blind eye like Aokiji did for Robin. I'm looking forward to seeing how this parallel plays out.
And that last panel??? Kuma's going to Foosha village! Probably to hunt down the gum gum fruit! (Oda's retcon to explain why the government didn't hunt down the stolen fruit earlier lol). Kuma probably lied to the government about its whereabouts, meaning the start of Luffy's journey could only happen because of Kuma! Why would Kuma lie? Maybe that happy-go-lucky gluttonous devil-fruit kid reminded him of Bonney. Oh my god.

My read on Kizaru
So Kizaru's been an enigma for a long time now. In between the extremely defined personalities of Akainu and Aokiji, Kizaru is a curious case as he's hard to figure out and gives up quite little. I'd struggled with pinning him down too but him dancing with Kuma and Bonney gave me an idea towards what he's about. The way I see it, Kizaru's work and personal feelings are at odds with each other. He does whatever the Marines want him to do but he doesn't necessarily like it. This stuff has been pretty well established but the main question remains, why does he do it?
Now, here's where my speculation comes in. I think Kizaru only sees value in himself as a tool. In what he can accomplish as a tool for the military. He knew he was strong so why didn't he become a pirate? The way I see it, where the "Unclear" part of his justice comes in is that, that's his perception of the word. He associates Justice with the Marines because he's never had much of a strong direction in life and while the overall justice of the Marines is unclear, they seem to be the moral right of this world. It's also the place his strength could be put to the best use with a purposeful direction. So, Kizaru sees himself as a tool and finds value in being useful. And his vision of justice is unclear as well as his perception of the Marines justice. He makes human connections that further muddy those waters but he doesn't have a concrete idea of right and wrong beyond that.
So where do those leaps in logic come from? Mainly here:
Saturn is an absolute piece of shit. But he also doesn't chew out Kizaru as much as he can. And Kizaru seems absolutely devastated that he couldn't fulfill his task. My guy got his lights punched out but he's still trying to talk. I think the reason Saturn doesn't say much to Kizaru is that he's manipulating him. We've seen Saturn be a crafty and manipulative bastard before:
Here he does the mental calculus of how much he can fuck with Kuma before Kuma loses it. He pushes and pulls with Kuma, a classic manipulator tactic, giving someone slack before pulling on the leash hard. And I think that's what he does with Kizaru.
Kizaru is absolutely subservient to Saturn. He shows him respect. Now that might be because Saturn is his superior but so is Akainu but he doesn't get the same respect. I believe that's because Kizaru respects strength as it goes back to his belief about his own usefulness. Akainu is roughly his equal but Saturn is definitely stronger. Kizaru sees his purpose as a tool that has strength so he must have respect in strength. It's a little bit of circular logic and chicken and egging but we've consistently seen Kizaru, although complaining, doing his best to get the job done. To prove that he's worth something. I think the main reason Saturn didn't say anything is cause he knows Kizaru is at the end of his rope morality wise. He might not have a strong view on justice but him having to cut down his former friends in Bonney, Vegapunk, and Sentomaru, is clearly weighing on him.
I don't think Kizaru will switch sides right now but I think the reappearance of Kuma will give him the final push towards the light side. He'll probably switch at a critical moment in the final battle, I don't think Oda would want to tip the scales too much before then. And I want Kizaru to be good cause I don't think anyone who dances could be evil
I know it's not the most solid idea but it's my lazy sunday contribution(technically monday rn but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). If you agree or disagree or have a different take lemme know. Kizaru has always been so interesting so I'm glad we're getting some insight into his at the very least.

(edited, I put 1099 instead I'm so sorry)
Chapter 1100 is out on tcb scans. Have a couple quick thoughts:
It's emotionally eviscerating, but the thing that got me (and a couple others I've talked to) just as much as Kuma's willingness to do anything for his daughter and the character parallels be tween him and Luffy is the fact that all three ASL brothers were in the chapter.
They were so fucking close to all seeing each other again. To living together as brothers. Fuck dude.

Spoiler Chapter 1100
I'm finally catching up on One Piece and well, next time someone says "But Franky is just a Robot!" we can tell them...
"Removing the human will from a cyborg just turns it into a simple Robot."
So, Franky is not a robot, he has a human will and so is a cyborg.

One Piece Chapter 1100 Thoughts!
I wanted to start making things that aren't shitposts (and I don't have anyone to talk about them with) so I'm gonna start posting my thoughts and what I like about the new chapter each week! Obviously, chapter 1100 spoilers below...
I don't think I'll ever get over how damn silly Vegapunk looks before he sets up his brain antenna. I giggle every time i see him, it's so goofy. Also, Kuma's bounty here being about the same as Luffy's when they fatefully meet is interesting to me. I love how bounties in OP don't care about powerscaling. And Kizaru needs to lose the fedora. He looks greasy.
Chapter after chapter Kuma is only becoming more likeable to me. Like obviously he would only care about Bonney being cured, but seeing it is still very moving.
Man, Saint Saturn better have a serious ass-kicking coming his way. As good as this flashback is, I can't wait to get back to the present to see what happens (and to probably get emotionally devastated considering Kuma's current day actions).
Lmao get fucked Senomaru.
Seeing these five enjoying their time together while Kuma and Bonney go through their treatments is super interesting to me. We've already seen Sentomaru siding with Vegapunk against the WG and this helps us see why. Now I'm wondering if Kizaru will have a change of heart... idk!
👀 Kizaru, you better hope the bosses don't see this.
Damn you Oda.
Its cool to see everyone's reaction to Kuma becoming a Warlord, but I'm just thinking of how much I miss the cowboy hat...
Wait...
HIS FLAG IS HER DRAWING????? COME ON! 😭
I would've never guessed that we'd end up here this chapter ngl. I can't wait to see what Kuma does at Foosha Village. Does he know about Luffy eating the Nika fruit? Is it a coincidence? I guess we'll find out in next week's chapter!
