Wonderland

Wonderland is a song about a love that feels so enticing it draws her in against her judgment. Taylor uses Lewis Carroll's Wonderland as a metaphor for love with a famous person and they try to hold on the chaos that ensues from going public. Get a cup of tea, this is long. I feel the lyrics, meaning and context of this song are overlooked because Taylor had a friend who likes the classic novel.

25 October 2012 - Taylors Rolling Stone Article is titled "Taylor in Wonderland" and talks about her apartment.

Over 18 months of remodeling, Swift gave the condo a heavy dose of well-funded OCD whimsy. The ceiling is arranged in multiple motifs – billowing curtains here, a painted indigo night sky there. In one corner, under hanging crystalline stars, sits a giant bunny made of moss. He’s wearing a hat. “It’s a whole Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland structure here,” she says, welcoming me the next morning. “It’s what the inside of my brain looks like, essentially.”

5 November 2012 - One Direction is on the cover of Wonderland Magazine holding puppies. The article talks about a book deal from a fanfic about Harry, death threats to girlfriends, abuse of their mothers, relationships breaking down due to abuse by fans and absolute ferver about them at that time. It includes the quotes:

"Anyone is welcome to stare into the eyes of Madness" and "The boys show a similar stubbornness when I suggest, perhaps, if they were a little less public about their girlfriends (boybands like Take That, for example, were always encouraged by management to be perennially single in public), then maybe their partners would not have to endure so much attention. “That’s shit,” says Louis. “That means you don’t lead a life that’s real. You wouldn’t be able to go out anywhere publicly with your girlfriend.”

2 December 2012 - a month after the article Harry and Taylor walked in Central Park. They had been on/off in private for months at that point and seemingly together for the last 4 months.

17 November 2014 - Taylor is on the cover of Wonderland Magazine, she talks about 1989 and Twitter Trolls.

In 2015 Taylor indicated that all the songs of romance songs on 1989 were about on person. While Taylor has never said who that person is songs like Style hint. In her March 15 2013 vanity fair article (the one that said harry chased her for a year before they dated and also pointed mentions she was born in 1989) Taylor said:

Taylor has only performed it 6 times, each has a reason. When 1989 was release Harry’s IG went black and white and stayed that way for nearly 2 years. He posted a colour photo within a week of each Time this song was played.

Original Lyrics

Along with 1989 TV Taylor released the original Wonderland Lyrics 27 October 2023. They are undated. I think it may have been started in 2011 when Taylor was in London and finished for 1989. The original Lyrics further indicate this song is about Harry:

"We danced down hallways, too in love to think straight" rather than" became "So, we went on our way / Too in love to think straight" Hallway's being common theme in Harry and Taylors songs about each other.

"Screaming you're the king and I'm the queen," rather than "All alone, or so it seemed." King/Queen is a common reference Taylor has used to indicate the muse is British. This is also on 1989 in Blank Space: "Stolen kisses, pretty lies, you’re the king, baby, I’m your queen"

"Colors I'd never seen twisting around me" became "I felt your arms twistin' around me." Colours are also a Haylor theme, on 1989 with OOTW: "The rest of the world was black and white / But we were in screaming color.”

"Didn't I tell you don't listen to them?" to "Didn't they tell us don't rush into things?" this reminds me of Slut! "I said it might blow up in your pretty face / I'm not saying do it anyway / But you're going to" because they went public and it did blow up.

"I turned around to find you and you were nowhere to be found / There was screaming and lightning / And I haven't been back since I had to leave you there..." became "I reached for you, but you were gone / I knew I had to go back home / You searched the world for somethin' else." this is similar to I Knew You Were Trouble: "And he’s long gone when he’s next to me", This Love: "And you were just gone and gone, gone and gone" and Blank Space: "Screaming, crying, perfect storms, I can make all the tables turn".

The first verse sets the scene of a relationship that is in the public eye and two people trying to hold onto their love in chaos. Specifically not a hidden relationship.

Flashing lights - It's easy to overlook how very out of control the fans and paparazzi were about Haylor and One Direction in 2011 - 2013. Having dated in secret for sometime when they did go public the focus was intense. When they dated again it was hidden, which is evident in both of their discographies.

I Know Places: Lights flash and we’ll run for the fences

Is It Over Now?: Flashing lights, oh Lord, let’s fast forward to three hundred takeout coffees later

Paris: Let the only flashing lights be the tower at midnight in my mind

One Directions Perfect "And if you like cameras flashing every time we go out oh yeah"

Fell down a Rabbit Hole is similar to IWYW "We're a crooked love in a straight line down"

Trying to hold onto each other in chaos is also in:

The Pre-Chorus tells of a decision to go public with a previously private relationship. At the time Harry and One Direction were incessantly asked invasive questions about dating, which Harry was increasingly uncomfortable answering. Shortly before 1D provided a list of banned questions which was not well received.

Slut! implies that Harry had wanted to go public and Taylor cautioned against it " Taking your chance / It's a big mistake / I said it might blow up in your pretty face / I'm not saying do it anyway / But you're going to / And if they call me a slut / You know it might be worth it for once"

Harry's green eyes are mentioned in many songs.

[Chorus] We found Wonderland, you and I got lost in it And we pretended it could last forever (Eh, eh) We found Wonderland, you and I got lost in it And life was never worse, but never better (Eh, eh)

The Chorus encapsulates this relationship, one they are drawn to, see the peril in and proceed anyway because they love it. Taylor has other lyrics that refer to forever not coming true:

Wildest Dreams: Nothing lasts forever, but this is getting good now

Cowboy Like Me: Forever is the sweetest con

False God: We were crazy to think / Crazy to think that this could work / Remember how I said I'd die for you?

Pretending is also a theme, I think this about suspending judgement to stay in a Lavender Haze, or set aside concerns about the potential reputational damage or bullying caused by fans:

Wildest Dreams: "Say you’ll see me again even if it’s just pretend"

The post chorus Eh's sound so similar to Rihanna's "Under my umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh" which is actually similar in theme, Umbrella is about a famous couple being there for each other, Wonderland is feeling like that didn't happen.

In the period One Direction was incessantly asked for a celebrity crush (while he was actually dating an exceptional famous dream girl) Harry often said Rihanna, if he answered. Rihanna was a safe choice, she wasn't single, she has spoken highly of Harry. Also she sat in front of him at the infamous 2013 VMAs.

[Verse 2] So, we went on our way Too in love to think straight All alone, or so it seemed But there were strangers watchin' And whispers turned to talkin' And talking turned to screams, oh

Fame and focus of people outside the relationship is a theme. I can't repeat enough how much this song is about a public relationship:

Harry for One Direction Where do Broken Hearts Go: "Mind is runnin' in circles of you and me / Anyone in-between is the enemy"

[Pre-Chorus] Didn't they tell us "Don't rush into things"? Didn't you flash your green eyes at me? Didn't you calm my fears with a Cheshire cat smile? Ooh, didn't it all seem new and exciting? I felt your arms twistin' around me It's all fun and games 'til somebody loses their mind But darling

The reference of a Cheshire Cat smile is a double meaning, both referring to Harry's smile and where he grew up, Cheshire, England. Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland, was also born in Cheshire. Calm my fears similar to the line in NYD “squeeze my hand”

[Bridge] I reached for you, but you were gone I knew I had to go back home You searched the world for somethin' else To make you feel like what we had And in the end, in Wonderland, we both went mad Oh

The song ends on a sad note, Taylor realises the relationship is too much for her so she gives it up. Her muse can't replace her and they never get over it. From Slut! and Say Don't Go in the 1989 Vault Taylor wanted more assurance in the chaotic storm of them going public. From Harry's TBSL and Little Freak we can infer that he wasn't ready for it, 19 and too famous too quickly.

We both went mad: the song ends on 'we both went mad' which is a double meaning of having lost themselves in this relationship and the Cheshire Cat saying "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad." in Alice in Wonderland. Madness is a theme in Harry and Taylors songs about each other:

Say Don’t Go: "The waiting is a sadness fading into madness"

Since Dipper is the one most likely to get backstory out of Bill, did he ever come across Flatland (as in, the book)?

Dipper's the one most likely to ask the questions that get the terrifying answers that Bill doesn't realize reveal a bit too much; but I think Bill would more freely share dry unemotional biographical details . He's already told Ford he comes from the second dimension, and he mentions Edwin Abbot Abbot when asked in the out-of-canon AMA about his origin—so I think it doesn't take much prying for him to describe where he comes from. (And in an earlier ask about this AU, I cracked a joke about him cheating at cards to coerce the family into watching Flatland for movie night.)

All of which is to say, I'm sure Dipper knows about the book Flatland—Bill's probably name dropped it—but to everyone's surprise except Bill's, it's Mabel who actually sits down and reads it first. By the time Dipper gets a crack at the book, Mabel's made a shapesona.

(This is Mabel's shapesona. Bill calls it the most hideously disfigured man he's ever seen.)

Keeping with the theme I've got going here of "Bill and Mabel are actually scarily alike and the more they notice that the more they get invested in figuring each other out": Bill is Mabel's new terrifying friend who might destroy reality, but is pretty fun when he isn't doing that or hurting her family, and MAYBE he could be talked out of wanting to do that at all! She wants to know where he came from and what made him the way he is. Dipper is driven by academic curiosity and a need to understand his enemy, but Mabel is driven by the 🌈🌟POWER OF FRIENDSHIP🦄💞!!!

So yeah she'll jump on this dry hundred-something-year-old book about MATH just to learn a bit more about Bill.

The first the rest of the household learns she's picked up the book is when she stomps into the kitchen in her pajamas ready to RIOT because the Flatlanders banned colors. "That's like banning fashion! Or HAPPINESS!"

(Bill reassures her that the book's mostly satire and color was legal in his dimension. "And anyway, they're all dead now!")

Dipper picks up the book the second Mabel finishes it. He probably gets a bit more out of the mathematical thought-experiment side of it, but not by a whole lot; Mabel might not be a nerd but she is smart, and most of the math concepts explained in the book are the kind of thing they're about to hit in school in anyway.

Mabel connects more to the story emotionally. Dipper interacts with the 1D King's disbelief of the 2nd dimension with the understanding that it's a metaphor to help a 3D reader grapple with their own disbelief of the 4th dimension, but Mabel interacts with it on the level of "the point king is stupid not to believe in lines, the line king is stupid not to believe in squares, the squares are stupid not to believe in spheres, and the sphere is stupid not to believe in 4D shapes!!" (Bill, deeply amused: "YEAH, YOU TELL 'EM, SWEATERS!")

Of course, Ford's read Flatland too, decades ago. He and Dipper can talk in depth about the mathematical concepts (which Dipper appreciates, because watching Mabel go on with Bill about the social side of the book is making him feel pretty left out). Ford helps explain some of the geometric concepts that are a bit beyond Dipper's 13-year-old education, and talks about his own personal experiences trying to interact with higher and lower dimensions—which are all a lot messier than the book would suggest.

But at night when the adults (and alien) aren't around, Dipper and Mabel have quiet conversations about the politics in the book—the sexism, the classism, the... shape-ism? the anti-intellectualism, the political imprisonments, the medical mutilations, the infanticide, the tyranny... And they wonder how much of it is just a human's fiction to make an interesting sci-fi book, and how much really does describe the world Bill came from.

Stan hasn't read the book and fell asleep during the movie.

a letter to the boy i grew up with:

the passage of time is a concept i’ll never truly understand, what i do know is one direction have been one of my greatest loves and special interests for a long long period of said time. i grew up with liam, his face and his voice is as familiar to me as family. i’m a patch quilt of my greatest passions and experiences that inform who i am now as an adult, and one direction are some of the most integral threads, woven between an overwhelming abundance of memories spanning the last 14 years. my environment is a scrapbook of the many things i dedicate my time to loving wholeheartedly, and now everywhere i look i’m surrounded my memorabilia of him. the posters litering my walls, the 1d mug my friends got me for my 1d themed birthday years ago, the 1d notebook i turned into a cookbook full of exactly three recipes that i’ve alternated between every night for years that i have open on my counter every time i cook despite knowing the recipes like muscle memory, just so it can be splashed with ingredients and become torn and tattered and used and loved, jewellery, books, concert dvds, tour programmes, an unfinished 1d painting lying discarded on my floor, and of course the 1d vinyls i got that started my collection which has since spawned into 80+ records spanning a vast discography of music that 1d opened me up to. liam is a powerhouse of vocals and lyrics, the grounding presence the band could not exist without. and so i mourn the person i’ll never get to see him heal and grow into, i mourn the band i’ll never see or listen to the same again, and i celebrate the boy i grew up with and the things he’s achieved with that band. i still shimmy like leeroy every time i put on a headband. i hope you are warm and at peace, rest easy lad. The Idea of You (2024) Review

I originally watched The Idea of You in a room full of former “One Directioners,” myself included. Having all been obsessed with one or more of the 1D members, we braced ourselves for Nick Galitzine’s portrayal of the beloved British pop ideal. What graced our screen was a caricature of Harry Styles: Hayes Campbell. Dressed in a white sleeveless tee, revealing his scattered sleeve of tattoos, and ripped skinny jeans, he made his way through his trailer after encountering Solene, his love interest who is 16 years his senior, portrayed by Anne Hatheway. The two meet under improbable circumstances when Solene stumbles into his trailer at Coachella, mistaking it for a public restroom. Despite this unrealistic meet-cute, they share playful banter and part ways, only to reconnect at a meet-and-greet for Hayes' band, August Moon. Solene, accompanied by her daughter, makes her way through a line of frenzied teenage fans, where bandmates make jokes about how attractive she is and Hayes is once again, enhanced by her. During the band’s performance, we see Solene and her daughter in the crowd and Hayes makes a last-minute set change to sing a new song that he dedicates to Solene. As their romance unfolds, they quickly become infatuated with each other, traveling the world, having sex in fancy hotels, and going out until the gripping reality of their relationship becomes clear and the two face the reality of Hayes’ high-profile lifestyle. This puts Solene and her daughter in the public eye, ultimately leading to their breakup. Overall, the film isn't bad. Both Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine deliver strong performances and make their characters compelling. The plot is engaging with high stakes, and because the characters are so likable, the audience roots for them. However, it is hard to move past just how uncanny the character of Hayes Campbell is.

The author of The Idea of You, Robinne Lee, admitted around the book's release that Harry Styles served as inspiration for the character of Hayes. Stating that “I was up late surfing music videos on YouTube" and "came across the face of a boy I’d never seen in a band I’d never paid attention to. … It was like…art.” Lee also shared after learning of Styles' relationships with older women that “the seed was planted” for the novel. However, as the book gained more popularity during the Pandemic, readers were quick to draw similarities between Harry Styles and Hayes, ultimately dubbing it a “Harry Styles fanfiction.” Lee responded to this by later stating she “regretted” sharing Styles as the inspiration and that “Harry was one of multiple people who went into creating Hayes Campbell.” Lee highlighted she wanted her novel to be seen as a story of a “woman reclaiming her sexuality and rediscovering herself.” While this theme is effectively conveyed, especially through Solene’s confident handling of divorce and new romance, it’s hard to ignore, at least in the film, how similar Hayes and Harry truly are. This similarity made it difficult to fully engage with the film, as it felt strange to watch a fictionalized version of a real person. For instance, the Coachella scene was the most jarring, with the band members mirroring real-life One Direction members in both voice and movement. The set design even echoes One Direction’s “On the Road Again” tour, with similar hand-drawn lightning bolts and arrows. It was during this scene that the room fell silence as each of us stared at the screen noting how strange this film actually was. Other details, like Hayes wearing a hat marked “Simple” — a nod to Harry Styles’ Pleasing brand — added to the sense of being in a world that felt too familiar. While these references may resonate with fans of Styles and One Direction, they can detract from the film’s storytelling.

All in all, the film's attempt to blend homage with original storytelling is notable, however, it sometimes struggles to balance these elements seamlessly. For fans of Harry Styles and One Direction, the film may offer a unique, if somewhat disconcerting, viewing experience. For others, it stands as a well-crafted romance with engaging performances and a moving narrative.

Do you think show did wrong to Xaro character? They also changed his race.

I think the show did wrong by most of the Essosi cast, because they weren’t sure why they were written. Xaro is no exception. (His race was changed, and I know GRRM said he was white, but the Qartheen live in the far east and surrounded by people described as darker-skinned, so it makes sense to me to cast actors of color as Qartheen. It’s making him into a 1D villain to kill rather than the opportunistic sometime ally as he is in the books in addition to casting an African actor for him that I object to). In the books he’s no more evil than the other Qartheen, he actively distrusts the Undying, doesn’t care about becoming King of Qarth (not that the Qartheen ever has kings), it’s implied he’s uninterested in women (though I’m rolling my eyes that him not looking at Dàny’s breast indicates that. She’s 14 and he’s a lot older plus he’s from a culture where breast-baring is common), he apparently defends her from the Pureborn. Yes, he does want one of the dragons, but after she refuses his marriage proposal he just tells her to leave the city, not work with his perennial enemies the warlocks to steal one. Then in ADWD he and Dàny have a talk about slavery and while he’s clearly in the wrong viewing freedom as useless to slaves, he does expose how valuable her idea of freedom is, with the story of his penniless friend forced to dig a ditch and begging to be bought into slavery. There’s more to him than “violent warlord seeking to conquer and seduces a maid who is loyal to the end in the books in order to get dragons by force”; he and the evils he represents (the well spoken, wealthy elite merchant slavers) are a lot subtler. Ultimately I don’t think the show understood what GRRM was doing with the character (nor Doreah, Irri, or really any of Dány’s khalasar), and once again were prioritizing the spectacle over themes about morality and corruption.

Synopsis

There's a bestfriend who's very close to each other, they grow together in the same community. They are very close to the point they didn't even notice what's on their relationship is. The story begins when something happened in cafeteria in their school. They are like siblings, make fun of each other, sharing experience, always with in all acquaintances and treat each other more than just a patner. Because of something they didn't realize they fall on the situationthat there's no escape or turn back and it will be forever. This story thought us a lesson about love, trust, and forgiving.

INTR. HIGHSCHOOL HALLWAY

We see two teenage boys, CEAN (18) and ARK (18), walking side by side, laughing about something as they make their way to class.

ARK: (jokingly) So, are you ever gonna share your lunch with me or should I just accept that you're a selfish food hoarder?

CEAN: (grinning) Sorry, buddy, but my mom only packed enough for one. You'll have to fend for yourself.

They playfully shove each other as they reach their classroom.

INT. SCHOOL CAFETERIA - LUNCHTIME

Cean and Ark sit at their usual table, surrounded by other students chatting and eating. They share a lunchbox, passing food back and forth between them, their friendship evident to anyone watching.

ARK: (leaning in) Hey, did you finish that English essay last night? I was struggling with the theme analysis.

CEAN: (nodding) Yeah, I managed to wrap it up. We can go over it together after school if you want.

Ark smiles appreciatively, their eyes meeting for a moment longer than usual before they both look away, a hint of something unspoken lingering in the air.

INT. ARK'S BEDROOM - EVENING

Ark immediately grab his phone and search this girl on social media then he found out this girl has a new boyfriend. So he try to communicate Zeya. He make a first move, he chat Zeya privately and Zeya immediately reply to his.

ARK: excuse me for bothering, i just want you to know if you knew Cean Smith?

Ark filled with emotionless in his face

ZEYA: Yes, and why?

ARK: I'm his Cousin, cause i saw ur picture here and i'm very curious so i searched you with the help on the internet i found you

ZEYA: ah, actually i'm his ex, we broke up because i choose my career over him and i'm not prepared for relationship that time i'm very sorry for him and i never get closure to him, can u please tell to him i was regretting all that i hope he can forgive me

tr's play is very common destination in London rn, my cousins went and they're not even fans of theater. but i do expect Anne to show up at the eras wembley shows bc eras tour is a cultural phenomenon and no one should miss it.

Awwww…I am glad to hear that the play is so popular. I will never begrudge a Canadian woman doing well, ha! But more importantly, this is a superbly talented *cast of colour* drawing attention to important themes and anything that raises awareness about this production is a win in my book.

I agree - no matter what the situation with her son and T, Anne will get an invitation to Eras (at Wembley or Anfield or somewhere else in the UK). Gemma too. I would bet money that they’ve stayed in contact over the years. It’s Blondie: she writes notes to kids she met at an award show who come backstage 4 years later (Alicia Keyes’s son Genesis). As if she didn’t send a note or something when Anne and Robin got married, or when Robin died of cancer!

Anne has been pro Taylor from the very start, and is still low key publicly supportive of her on social media.

And do you guys remember this? It’s in This is Us.

Timestamp 6:38, when Anne and Robin are in the car on the way to the Dec 3, 2012 1D MSG concert (which Taylor cannot attend because she is getting an award from the some Kennedy association that night, but quickly exits that and goes right to the after party.)

So yeah: no matter what, I think she will go to Eras. She cares for Taylor over and above what happens with any relationship with her son. And why not? They both seem like lovely people IRL.

1. what's the fic youre most proud of?

Honestly, my current longfic WIP (Lent From Tomorrow) is easily the best thing I've ever written, fic or original work. But I'm proud of most of my longer-than-a-drabble fics for something or another.

I'm very proud of the Five Places Cinna Came From for actually finishing the whole thing, and same with Milliefic.

(The longer it's been since writing Milliefic, the more I'm like, 'its only real redeeming value is having finished something of that length, especially posting as I wrote,' but that's just me letting Larries spoil my fandom experience, I think.)

I'm proud of every Big Bang or Mini Bang fic I've actually finished and posted. I think Not In The Answer But The Question is currently the best fic on my AO3, probably, although I do think that I had to flub the pacing on the last quarter to meet the deadline. I still to this day think that Valor Valeria and What They Don't Tell You In History hold up, and they're old as heck, so that says something.

I actually really love the Stereo Kicks/H*rry P*tter world crossover that @fille-lioncelle and I wrote? It's paced well, IMO, and I think we took a fairly unique take on that trope by making them all adults and out of school.

I love all of the Since Feeling Is First stories that @nichestars and I wrote, even though it drives the OCD part of my brain a little nuts that we're three words short of an even 100,000 on the series, LOLOLOL.

I don't know that there's any one fic that I'm like "THIS IS MY PERFECT MASTERWERK" about, because I don't do like, extensive rewriting or whatever on fic and I know that I don't quite meet any lofty goals of having Symbolism! or Theme! that I try for with longer stuff, but there are aspects of pretty much everything longer than a drabble that I can take pride in. I try hard to be gentler to myself about the quality of my output than I used to be, because being cruel to myself just made me Not Write At All, and that's the opposite of the point, so.

11. Has a fic you’ve written ever caused issues/controversy?

Well, the Fanlore page for the "Timeline of 1D Fandom" says that Milliefic created some of the Larrie Truther tropes, and I've accepted that even though I don't GET it because it's CLEARLY ALL MADE UP OUT OF MY DUMB HEAD, but that would count as causing issues, for sure.

Landslide got (and still gets) inane hate for having M/F sex scenes even though it's M/M endgame. WAYYYYY back in the day, I wrote an Alec/Clary fic before Alec came out as monosexually gay in the Shadowhunter books, and every so often someone reads it without seeing that it was written in like 2010 and they get angry about me making a gay character bi (which would be fair if I'd done it after he came out as gay, but ::shrug::).

I feel like I vaguely recall someone trying to stir up something about my THG fic when The Panem Companion was announced, but they're completely separate works that have nothing to do with each other, so I feel like if there WAS drama about it, I wasn't actually aware of it.

But yeah, Milliefic takes the cake on that one.

15- How would you summarize the themes of your work this year in one sentence?

it's hard to find a common theme for every one of them. i guess if you disregard the most light-hearted pieces and only keep the more serious/thoughtful ones, maybe they're all about the difficulty of embracing change but managing to do it anyway? but that feels like a cop-out answer, because aren't all fictional works about change? i can't think of anything else, though 😌

27- Which books, movies, etc, helped instruct your storytelling this year?

in terms of books, i haven't read a lot of published fiction this year. almost none, actually (meaning i can't remember what was the last novel i read :/ i've been focusing on graphic novels and non-fiction lately) i read fewer fics than i used to as well, but there's a few that had quite an impact on me (x x x x) they all have in common that they have darker themes + morally grey characters, and that's a direction i'd definitely like to explore more in my own work. i did that a little with my Buffy AU but i'd definitely like to take it further next year.

otherwise, music has been my number one source of inspo as always. just to cite a few, jeff buckley's grace (and what he said about it) was the inspiration for this. alex g's runner prompted me to write this in one night. and I've been obsessed with french band feu! chatterton lately—their lyrics are very poetic and evocative and i hope i find a way to channel that in my own writing somehow. i have a tendency (partly born out of laziness) to want to keep things direct and to the point, so i think my writing could use some more... how should i put it? style lol

28- What are your writing goals for next year?

see previous question about exploring darker themes 👀 otherwise i don't really know, i've never been the kind of person to make new year's resolutions, much less keep them

there's also the fact that i'm kind of in between fandoms right now, so i'm not sure there'll be much 1d content from me next year, apart from a fic for the zouis fest. if inspiration strikes, maybe i'll try my hand at some original writing, but who knows. it also depends on real life stuff and how (un)busy i’ll be over the coming months

I know I've spoken about this story to everyone and their mother and I've left my little comments at the beginning of every chapter, but Oliver's story is such an insanely entertaining thing to write

One thing I noticed, was that the thing I intended to be a more subtle theme or narrative, about the whole story revolving around and influenced by public perception, happened to become a fully explicit thing emphasised by multiple characters in multiple chapters at multiple occasions, so I'll have to tone it down a bit

but i guess this is what i get for not reading my own work before writing another chapter

other than the outrageous amount of kidnapped by/sold to 1d fics ive read i'm taking a lot of inspiration from a book called Airhead by Meg Cabot that used to be a big favourite of mine and it's about modelling and brain transplants and such

speaking of those fanfics, i usually stopped reading them once it got to the romantic parts, i was only interested in the whump of it so it's no wonder im here now

#i haven’t really posted about my Thoughts as i’ve been trying to be uh #obvious about where i stand on things (i mean hello i dropped out of BB)#while also not stating... a lot of my thoughts in order to avoid any backlash bc this site just is that way when someone posts opinions #but here we go #1d has been catered to teens and younger since their inception #any 20-something year old who is an adult that’s in the fandom was in that age group when they were still a active as a band #anyone who is 30-40+ years old in this fandom very much has the right to bein the fandom #but they were not and are still not the targeted audience for 1d #i’m completely fine with 30/40+ year olds bneing in this fandom as long as they do not treat those younger than them #particularly minors or younger adults that support minors in this situation #with such disrespect #and absolutely no consideration of their feelings #furthermore yes! i agree it’s important to let writers flourish #i believe writing can also be an outlet for anyone who’s dealt with any dark themes found in wriitng #and fandom writing is very free #but the 1d fandom isn’t a normal fandom like books or tv shows or movies #the members of 1d are real people and hopefully no one is showing any fic to any of these people in question #but they are still written about #despite being fictional bc it’s fanfic #there definitely needs to be a massive line of consideration for the people you’re writing about #and in a fandom where there are minors and in a fic fest that claimed to be safe for everyone after banning minors (for #once again #safety)#allowing a fic of that nature to be posted on a massive blog many people of many ages within the fandom would see it is not appropriate #it has created discomfort in minors and even some adults and instead of taking that into consideration #those who found the discomfort in the fic are belittled and ignored #once again this isn’t something that requires someone coming at people and saying ‘let people read/write what they want!’ because #people behind computers literally cannot force people to not write or read things and that statement has always been ridiculous to me #it really is just the consideration of people in the fandom #as well as the real life people you’re writing about

today was an ELEVEN HOUR DAY god I just got home but it was so fulfilling and full of so many good human interactions!!!!

#lessons were so good! my first class got very into helping me design the assignment and it was v fun #my friend came to help me register my students to vote and we got maybe ~20 kids registered or updated #and everyone else looked up registration on website to confirm #we are going to take a class field trip (with BAKED GOODS) to vote during early voting #then I met with one of my students about a fandom related project and we discussed how she would cast Rebecca if it were a 1D fanfic #she’s a zarry girl lmao and wants louis to be mrs danvers which LOL #I LOVE IT I AM CRACKING UP JUST THINKING ABOUT HIM TORMENTING MR. HARRY DE WINTER-STYLES #then i met with another student and we did brainstorming and research for her project on genderqueer themes in virginia woolf #then i read stone butch blues and taught it and we had a v good discussion #we have really taken a lot of time with that novel but it’s SUUUUUCH a good tool for teaching not just content but also #lots of the course learning goals around communication and listening and thoughtful empathetic inquiry #and our discussion was v good today! about how ‘transition’ isn’t like a pre/post thing where wham bam surgery and now you’re done!#(im too tired to be coherent but one of the things that is working so so beautifully about that class is how open and thoughtful they are #with each other. idk we have just invested a LOT of time in those communication/listening goals and i feel like it is bearing fruit!#then i met with three students back to back from that class about projects and discussions and it was good #then i wrote up the assignment prompt from the first class’s brainstorming sessiom #n*#then i skyped with two of my tutoring kids one of whom i just LOVE god she is just so insightful and intellectually generous at 17 #and is going to just make wherever she is a better place for everyone there #then i got a book id put on hold about course design and teaching #and started tearing up reading it on the way home bc it had these beautiful exercises where he was asking teachers in his seminar to #let go of pragmatism for a moment and just let themselves dream as freely and creatively about what they wanted students to leave knowing #IT WAS BEAUTIFUL AND I WAS EMOTIONAL OKAY #now i am making dinner and then pip and i will do an obstacle course indoors #bc it is raining #small victories #teaching

Can we talk about the reference to cinema in Lucky Again? I was watching a reaction to FITF (I can't stop) from someone who didn't seem to know much about L/H/1D and she said "who is this man selling tickets at the cinema?" I had to laugh. Also after the leak I thought it was "they're selling tickets at the cinema" but the lyric book says THERE which really changes how I interpret that line. What do you think?

I think yes. When we did not have the official lyrics yet I thought it was

If you believe that guy is superman

They're selling tickets to the cinema

followed by "whatever gets you through the darkest night" which I thought was a bit shady, saying yeah if you think highly of that guy and all his behavior then you go over there and buy what he's selling you, you go watch that movie, you go entertain yourself with those thoughts if that helps you I guess whatever, but then it flips and but just find the light out of that madness like find your way back to earth (you're not superman) because that ain't real life.

I think both Louis and Harry use "Cinema" in the same derogatory way, in part, because I think both songs have a lot of layers to them and yes Harry's song Cinema has a ya nasty layer which is great and gay I think it also has another layer of looking at that recently luckily called off stunt where, not only did they work on a movie and it was mostly for the movie, also the whole PR fuckery around is was another movie in itself, a fake story, baby that's Cinema, that's some performative shitstorm dumpsterart, that's some narrative for you there, and well go on be entertained by it sheeple. It's passive aggressive and I love it.

Now back to Lucky Again and the actual lyrics:

HA so the believed superman is the one selling the tickets. So.. thinking someone's all that because they're trying to sell you things? Trying to get you to buy the movie, the story. It's not just that dude over there is doing these great things you go watch it no he's also the dude that's the face you meet at the front desk there to sell something to you. Whether that something is a fabricated story/world (the CINEMAtic universe of the entertainment industry idk bro we're going places) or just mindless entertainment or even a specific reference to the song Cinema (which in turn takes you to the other points in my opinion so the only added layer is larry here which great good lovely). And then the contrast to that guy being superman vs him being a hard man, and that superman is standing right there vs him being a hard man to lose/find. And how that guy can be himself, either the public version or the version he thought he was or thought he had to be, but also the "you", but also another party that's selling a life to him/"you"/them both (like wow guys look fame isn't it shiny for instance), or a general figure selling a story to the general public.

But I also wanna talk about the other references of that line: hello DC universe I know way too little about. He's going from "Superman" to Batman with "the darkest night" -> The Dark Knight. With that I'm seeing the whole batman-joker-twoface-DC-cinematic-universe come to life in this verse or perhaps whole song, with the themes of madness ("madness is like gravity, all it takes is al little push") and luck (the lucky coin / leaving things up to chance and living for the chaos deciding mad actions based on a coin flip / "you make your own luck" all that) and find the light (batsignal lol), "before the world it got so serious" ("why so serious"). Like they're not directly related or not that I've cared to figure out because I don't think that would make much sense either but they're the famous quotes and this song's hitting all them keywords and I love the idea of him playing around with this stuff. There's probably a lot more to say about this, maybe for someone to whom this is the crossover of their dreams could write an essay about this lol it's not me.

And also of course the use of superman; implying that guy can do everything, achieve everything, do everything at once, be more than any mere human, be beyond mortal lol, nah he's just another guy. He's just that guy, and the "I" is a hard man (to lose/find) even, and the "you" has been working hard to be themselves, and then he's bringing it further back down to earth with lines like "I'd meet you at the favourite subway stop / we'd grab some food and meet the lads for one". Like a wise man once said "I can't be no superman, but for you I'll be super human".

Also wanna highlight the wordplay with "I'm a hard man to lose/to find" + "I was lucky once / I could be lucky again" -> hard-luck, aka unlucky, in a bad situation out of your control. This throughout the whole song, basically saying you're down on your luck without directly saying it "you give until it's gone away", "I see how hard you've worked [to be yourself]", "i made my way back", "[the time] it got away from us", "find the light out in the madness hold tight" I think all imply bad luck, but he's choosing (let's bring in "made my way back to a life I would choose") to focus on the positive, on how the luck can turn in his favor instead.

And then the other reference: "whatever gets you through the darkest night" -> John Lennon's Whatever Gets You Thru The Night, he mentioned this song together with Mind Games (again the song that holds the phrase "Faith In The Future") in a tweet at some point, and some more times throughout recent years, so I think at the very least it's something he was aware of writing it lol.

Also darkness vs light keeps coming back in his lyrics, on FITF alone but we could be bringing in other songs, also 1D and other's lyrics too, it's too much to go in to on top of all these points now but I just at least wanna mention that's a thing too and it's overwhelming :D

I don't know how to end this because I feel like we can ramble on about these things forever lemme end on The Dark Knight Rises -> I'm A Hard Man. :D :D Get IT :D :D
