everybody should watch netflix’s new show Supacell it was very good! honestly i was skeptical at first cause i don’t watch sci-fi movies fr so i really only pressed play because i saw an all black cast and some black romance and we don’t have nearly enough of that so i wanted to try to support and i don’t regret pressing play at all. i binged the 6 eps in one sitting lol it’s very good i love all the characters and am intrigued by them so i’m really excited to see more in next season. it starts a lil slow but as soon as it picks up it’s really good and you just can’t stop watching cause you’re just so into it lol. also i’m canadian so it was interesting to see the black south london culture and like lifestyle in this, and from what i’ve seen on social media it was done pretty well so i really enjoyed that aspect of the show as well. another great aspect is the fact that it brings awareness to sickle cell which mainly affects us. the way it’s incorporated in the show is very unique and another cool touch.
this first season felt so short that as soon as i finished it i ran to youtube to binge all their interviews and i fell in love w the cast lol they seem like a lovely group and their chemistry translated well into their acting (more specifically tosin and ade who play michael and dionne). they’re literally all so beautiful too like omggg it’s crazy. but it seems like they haven’t been renewed for a second season yet so i neeeed everybody to support the show by liking it on netflix and just showing love on every platform just to let them know we want more lol. like a bunch of the actors said, a show like this could really help open doors for black people in the film industry, it can help show that black people can tell multiple stories and can star in different genres so please, show it some love, let’s tell the film industry that we want more black casts in romcoms, sci-fi, horror and just any genre!
i would talk more about like my favorite scenes and everything but i don’t want to spoil anyone who hasn’t seen it yet lol but i will quickly say that my fav character is def sabrina like she’s beautiful, caring and protective of those she loves. i’m a big sister like her so i think that also played a part lol but i feel like there’s still so much they can do with her character like honestly we don’t know much about her so i hope we can learn more in the next season.
again, if you haven’t watch it yet, you need to! (you’re missing out on great tiktoks abt it too)

Is anyone truly deeply aware of The Obscure Adaptation of "The Island of Dr. Moreau" but as a Kids Cartoon? I know that defiantly sounds a hell of a Crazy idea of wanting to Adapt an Sci-Fi Horror Adult Book into a Goofy Cartoon, but believe it or not, this One is not just your ordinary version.
So I've recently been watching a New Obscure Show from Canadian called "Spliced", which is a Semi-Adaptation of One of H.G. Wells' Novels that I've mentioned before, only instead of focusing on Vivisection, it focuses on the Society of Mutant Animal Mashup Hybrid Beasts. But in a Slice-of-Life way, not in a Dramatic tone like how the Book putted in.
Granted, I never really have read the Book before but the Cursed 90s Adaptation is the Only Version that I have seen (have not ever dared to wanting to look into the 30s or 70s one).
So far, the only buildup of trying another Foreign Show but this time from Canada (Which I have seen Many Canadian Shows in My Childhood like with "Ruby Gloom" or the more famous, EEnE or G4's MLP), & despite Me having a more deep touch on Japan, Russia, French, or Ireland (cough, cough, which I am attached to my Most Favorite Foreign Film studios from each of there's, cough), I'm always more open-minded to Other Foreign Animated Media from a Different Country. Which inspired Me to take my own Redesign Trip on the Spliced cast, if they looked more Different or at least Realistically Accurate to their Animal Mashup species while also mixing both the Show and My Own Artstyle.
I was originally going to neglect Compuhorse since I couldn't afford on what to do with Him to Re-design him since I had no idea on how to do a Personal Interpretation Mashup between an Animal with Electronic (let alone have a Horse be implanted with Technology since the Animal Mashups between Two or More Beasts were way easier) but then I instantly did figure out something on how to do by just turning the tables around and have Him in a Wheel Chair with No Legs (as a callback to his own Inspiration since he's a Stephen Hawking based-parody). I dunno, chances are, I just didn't want to leave him out since he's one of the Show's Main Characters.
Princess Pony Apehands was honestly my Most Favorite out of the Redesigns, while her looks may have been based off of the Stereotypical Girly-Girl Pony type, I wanted to redesign her by adding some adjustments to make it more "Modern-like" (inspired by Horseland).
Two-Legs Joe was obviously a twist (I know as to why he is called by that) but since I've "swapped" Compuhorse and Joe in this, I'd figure why not five Joe some Feathers (more as Wings than just Arms) so I guess you could at least say that he's now "Armed-Winged Two-Legs Joe"?, "Winged-Two-Legs Joe"? I just thought maybe a Flying Rhinoceros with Wings would be pretty funny if you're back or your tail is attached to a Bird (though he would pretty much still use his own Legs for Hands).
The Rest of Them were easier since you could obviously tell for Which Character they had More than just One Species being a Mashup of (minus Patricia since she's already an Animal Mashup Born, a Platypus (Duck-Beaver)), but Peri and Fuzzy were very hard, I know Peri is supposed to be Half Octo Half Cat or Fox but to Me, he looked more like a Squirrel so I made him into a Flying Squirrel/Cuttlefish mashup but for Fuzzy, considering that his Mashup Species is nowhere confirmed, I had to do my best coming up with the best instinct of Two Rodent Species of Animal as I theorized Fuzzy to be an Mashup of Two Rodents combined (A Bunny and An Albino Possum or a Rat).

Summer Reading/Writing/Arting Tag
Tagged by my lovely friend @dirty-bosmer to complete this "get to know the author" tag game. Thank you <3
Tagging: @marlynnofmany @arkhorton @stormbeyondreality @svartalfhild @bostoniangirl21 @mareenavee @frankensonnet @crathbonewriter @chapel-orahamm-blog @cheeseandstrawberrytartlover
And anyone who wants to join in! Please tag me :)
1) Describe one creative WIP project you’re planning to work on over the summer.
I have a finished draft of a sci-fi, very character-centered, far-future alien invasion story that I want to hunker down and edit/second draft/etc. over the summer. It started as a NaNoWriMo project (I did not make it to 50k in that month, sadly) but I eventually finished it, then added to it, and now am gonna make it a thing.
2) Rec a book!
Heroes and Harbingers by @arkhorton. A magical school, a Chosen One, gods and creatures, and two amazing teachers!
Spectacular Silver Earthling by @marlynnofmany. A reality TV show on an alien world? What could go wrong?
(you should go buy and read both of these immediately!)
3) Rec a fic! (outside your character tag)
I collected a few short ones that I’ve reblogged:
4) Rec music!
Unleash the Archers. Canadian power metal! They are seriously amazing. You will be hooked! And their last two albums, Apex and Abyss, are concept albums that tell the same story as it plays out over time. Definitely check them out!
5) Share one piece of advice!
Just keep writing/drawing/making art! Everyone seems to have rules about how things 'should be' and the 'proper way is to do it like this'. Don't listen to them. Your art is your art, and you make it however you damn well want! Your voice, your style, that's you and you don't need to try to conform to someone else's idea of right or good or whatever. As the song says, shine on you crazy diamond!

8 shows to get to know me
Thank you for the tag, @ruiniel!
Code Geass: the only good and therefore the best anime😊I come back to this show every once in a while and it still holds up. It knows exactly what it is (campy melodrama with robots and politics) and it's gracefully ungraceful about it. The confidence with which this show sets fire to itself only to become what it was always meant to be is unparalleled.
The Expanse: found out about this show years before it started airing, from a list of "upcoming space opera shows", because I was desperate to see anything new in that genre. Out of all the shows on that list, it ran the longest. It's a sea-change in how sci-fi tv is made, and its influence will be as persistent and ubiquitous as that of Star Trek. You can already see it in shows that came out after it, like Halo, which mixed a good dollop of Expanse's themes into its boring space gunman setting and emerged much improved for it.
Chris Colorado: the Franco-Canadian dystopian post-apocalyptic sci-fi show that I and only I remember. Not the most coherent plot but a world and characters that blew me away as a kid and a soundtrack that fundamentally changed me as a person. Ars longa, vita brevis!
Fringe: I haven't seen this one in a while but the way it approached the often-trite and overdone mad scientist archetype stuck with me. Fringe has a lot of interesting takes on the role of science in helping the world, and the extent to which there things that would be best left unknown.
Samurai Jack: a colossal triumph of artistry and storytelling.
Carnival Row: this show was scientifically engineered in a lab and laser-targeted specifically for me. It for me. It has everything I love: he devastating collision between the fantastical and the mundane, the fundamental certainty that people are inescapably people, and the wonderful setting which openly and transparently parallels our own world to illustrate how those people are inevitably doomed to fuck up. Unless we get a Dishonored TV show (likes to charge reblogs to cast) this is as close as we're ever likely to get to "Preda: the TV show"
Rings of Power: listen - this is the "get to know me" list, not the "best shows" or the "favorites" list. And fundamental to my opinion of Tolkien's works is the belief that fanfiction is the future of any further adaptations of the legendarium. A remake of the LOTR/Hobbit films would be an inevitable flop, and an adaptation of the Silmarillion itself is unlikely to ever happen. But high-budget fanfiction that tries to stay true to the themes and spirit of the books while also adding on original elements or making minor changes to the setting or events? That's where the future lies. That's what Shadow of Mordor was, and that's also what Rings of Power is. I don't expect everyone to like it, but does happen to appeal to me in more ways than it irritates me.
Lovecraft Country: I read the book, then mere days later I heard it's getting adapted to TV and saw the cast. This show *also* changes a lot of the fundamental aspects of the source material while staying true to the themes and spirit, and I think it's a beautiful thing. The fact that my favorite character, Montrose, was played by the legendary Michael K Williams in one of his last roles before his death is something that makes me very emotional whenever I think about it.
Honorable mentions: The Terror and Chernobyl are sensational shows, Shadow and Bone made me excited to read the books and Foundation is #3 on the list of "very good adaptations that change a lot of details while staying true to the yadda yadda"; note that anything with Jared Harris in it will at least get me to take a look. The man is like a magic ingredient for making good TV.

Blog Tour + #Review: DELICIOUS MONSTERS by Liselle Sambury!
Tumblr media
Welcome to Book-Keeping and my stop on the Turn the Page Tours blog tour for Delicious Monsters by Liselle Sambury! This YA horror was one of my most-anticipated reads for 2023, and boy did it deliver! I’m so excited to tell you all about the book and my review, so let’s go!
About the Book
Tumblr media
title: Delicious Monsters author: Liselle Sambury publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books release date: 28 February 2023
The Haunting of Hill House meets Sadie in this evocative and mind-bending psychological thriller following two teen girls navigating the treacherous past of a mysterious mansion ten years apart.
Daisy sees dead people—something impossible to forget in bustling, ghost-packed Toronto. She usually manages to deal with her unwanted ability, but she’s completely unprepared to be dumped by her boyfriend. So when her mother inherits a secluded mansion in northern Ontario where she spent her childhood summers, Daisy jumps at the chance to escape. But the house is nothing like Daisy expects, and she begins to realize that her experience with the supernatural might be no match for her mother’s secrets, nor what lurks within these walls…
A decade later, Brittney is desperate to get out from under the thumb of her abusive mother, a bestselling author who claims her stay at “Miracle Mansion” allowed her to see the error of her ways. But Brittney knows that’s nothing but a sham. She decides the new season of her popular Haunted web series will uncover what happened to a young Black girl in the mansion ten years prior and finally expose her mother’s lies. But as she gets more wrapped up in the investigation, she’ll have to decide: if she can only bring one story to light, which one matters most—Daisy’s or her own?
As Brittney investigates the mansion in the present, Daisy’s story runs parallel in the past, both timelines propelling the girls to face the most dangerous monsters of all: those that hide in plain sight.

My 5-Star Review
Delicious Monsters was one of my most-anticipated reads of 2023, and boy did it deliver! I was so ready for a creepy, horror-filled tale, and that’s exactly what I got -- whether it’s body horror or birds (oh how I hate birds, and this book did not help!), it’s all in here. We’ve got the tale of a mansion we keep hearing is “dangerous,” told from the POV of two teen Black girls a decade apart: Daisy, in the past, and Brittney, in the present. Daisy and her mom inherit the cursed mansion and move up to live on the grounds and turn the house into an Airbnb. Brittney, who grew up with an awful, abusive mother who has since become famous for “turning her life around” after a stay at the mansion, is a YouTube documentarian. She and her partner are working on their show, “Haunted,” with a season she wants to be about forgotten Black girls. Slowly, slowly, the story unravels before us, alternating timelines and POVs, and I swear you will be unable to look away from the horror that you know is around the corner.
This story is creeptastic and spooky and just fabulously horrific, and I mean that in the best way. We need more YA horror like this! Also, I have to mention *that cover*, which I’m declaring now as my favorite cover of the year. I can’t imagine *anything* coming along that will beat the creepy beauty of this one!
Rating: 5 stars!

The A/PI Heritage Month interviews are coming to a close soon! For Day 8, we have lovely Aster! :chinhands:
Aster, author of Nevermoore
A/PI Heritage Month Featured Author
They say that curiosity killed the cat, but it won’t be satisfaction that’ll be bringing you back. Again. And again. And again.
The simple act of visiting your parents turns into something much more than what you were expecting when your car suddenly breaks down in the middle of nowhere, and you find yourself right beside a small town that’s engulfed by the trees.
Some of the residents you met right away were welcoming enough, happy to try and lend a helping hand when they can. But their smiles seemed more apologetic than happy, and their eyes looked at you with regret.
You never really did understand why that was…
Until you died.
So now, you are an unwilling participant in an endless cycle of death and resurrection. And the more you learn about the bloodstained history of the town and the past of its people, the more you'll get tangled up in a web of secrets that threatens to keep you there forever.
So welcome, newcomer… to Nevermoore.
(INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT UNDER THE CUT!)
Q1: First of all, introduce us to your project! What is it about?
Nevermoore is planned to be is a supernatural story wrapped in a little horror bow about a cursed town that’s both lost to the trees and lost to the ages. Relatively normal lives can still happen there...well, as normal as it gets when not only is aging put to a pause, but dying isn’t even a permanent thing. And the duration of the stay, as far as the town is concerned, is forever.
And unsurprisingly, these effects of the town are barely half of the secrets and mysteries that it holds...But the question is, does the latest new resident that ‘accidentally’ stumbled across it (spoiler alert that’s you) really wants to know what they are?
...Perhaps some things are just better left forgotten.
Q2: If it’s not too spoilery, what are you most excited about your project?
Oh, there’s so many scenes and reveals I want to get to already that it’s hard to choose! But if I had to be specific, the one I’m most excited in writing out is Sterling’s (an RO) backstory! I don’t mean to play favorites or anything, but I like to think that their backstory as having the most Hollywood movie levels of drama and intrigue.
Sterling was honestly the first character I made for this story, even before the MC, so I can’t help myself in having some fun with this!
Q3: What inspired the current project you’re working on?
Believe it or not, Nevermoore’s first iteration was supposed to be a very specific, very self-indulgent AU fanfic of this piece of media I was into back in like, 2014? The drafts of that had remained in my Google Drive, unchanged and unworked on, that is until about two years ago when I discovered the wide, diverse world of interactive fiction.
Inspired to create a story to share with others, I ended up reviving those old documents. The plot and the characters had to be massively overhauled to make it more my own of course, and some inspiration was also been taken from shows like Stranger Things and Dark for their eerie and secretive small-town aesthetics.
Q4: Do you pull from your own identity for inspiration? How has that been reflected in your work?
...Admittedly, not so much. It was an embarrassingly lack of foresight on my part (as a first generation Filipino-Canadian), because it somehow never occurred to me that I can, in fact, add characters who are like me into my own writing. Well, lesson learned. Good news is that I already have some side characters planned who’ll be Filipinothat will show up later on in Nevermoore’s demo, as well as have a Filipino RO in a future wip. The latter of which I am very excited about!
With that being said, I will share that MCs parents in the story are actually loosely based on my own parents who were Filipino immigrants! I won’t elaborate on what parts, but I’m planning on integrating some more of their personalities in the upcoming patch. I really want dedicate those characters to them, since they’ve already sacrificed so much to bring me and my sibling here in Canada to have a better life! :)
Q5: What’s been your experience so far? With writing, with the if community...
There’s no doubt in my mind that getting involved with the IF community has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, despite being incredibly internet shy at first. I’m glad to have meet so many amazing IF writers and readers, and I definitely wouldn’t have gotten as far as I did with my projects if it weren’t for our constant support, help, and hype for each other.
This community has been so wonderful and welcoming, and I can’t wait to see it grow even more!
Q6: Do you have any future projects in the works?
At least three so far, actually! Nothing is fully established yet, just some concepts and vibes. But the genres are high-fantasy, postapocalyptic-ish, and sci-fi.
The first is about a character who’s an aspiring writer (heh) that suddenly finds themselves ‘isekaied’ into the fantasy world of the still-incomplete book they were working on. The second is about an immortal from the dawn of humanity trying to live through the endof humanity ft. zombies(?). And the third is about a volunteer of a cryosleep experiment gone wrong and ends up waking up 1000 years in the future instead. It seems here that my brain won’t let me rest and is telling me to try my hand in as many genres I can haha!
Q7: Finally, what piece of advice would you give to fellow authors?
This is advice that I still have to work on following myself but: Don’t stress too much on your first drafts, it’s called that for a reason! Focus on getting the basic ideas/dialogues/etc down and don’t be afraid to write ‘badly’, since there’s always time for you to polish it into something you’re happy with later on!
Otherwise, you’ll only get into this cycle of editing the same sections over and over, and that can burn you out before you even have the chance to work on the parts you’re actually excited for!

Stuff I’m Looking Forward to in May
May is among my favorite months of the year! In addition to Eid al-Fitr (May 1-2), Cinco de Mayo (May 5), Mother’s Day (May 8) and Memorial Day (May 30) as well as the currently-in-progress Independent Film Festival Boston (April 27 - May 4), here is what’s on my radar:
Movies:
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
I thought the first Doctor Strange movie was fine, but I’m excited about this new MCU flick mainly because of director Sam Raimi, who hasn’t done a super hero movie since his Spider-Man trilogy with Tobey Maguire. Opens 5/6.
TV:
The Pentaverate
You have to go all the way back to The Love Guru in 2008 to find the last time Mike Myers had a project he created, wrote, produced and starred in. Which is what makes this mini-series he created and played multiple parts in so exciting. Premieres 5/5 on Netflix.
The Kids in the Hall
The Canadian comedy group rose to fame with their sketch comedy show that aired from 1988 to 1995. I used to watch it on CBS and HBO as a teen. Since their 1996 movie Brain Candy, they have reunited here and there, but it is incredibly exciting have the 5 original cast members returning for a limited series on Amazon Prime Video, premiering 5/13.
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Ewan McGregor is returning to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi that he played in Star Wars episodes 1-3. This mini-series is set ten years after episode 3 and ten years before episode 4. Also appearing on this series is Hayden Christiensen as Darth Vader. Premieres 5/27 on Disney +.
Stranger Things
The Duffer Brothers’ 1980s sci-fi horror series was my #6 TV Show of the 2010s. Season 4 premieres 5/27 on Netflix.
Music:
Arcade Fire We
Arcade Fire are one of my favorite bands on the planet! I named their 2010 album The Suburbs my #1 Album of the 2010s and I’m super excited abut their new album. Founding member Will Butler recorded this album with the band before he left the band and it is co-produced by Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. Album drops 5/6.
The Smile A Light for Attracting Attention
Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood have formed a side project with Son of Kemet’s Tom Skinner. I’ve been digging a lot of the Radiohead solo and side projects in the last few years and the songs that The Smile have released have, well attracted my attention! Digital release drops 5/13.
Florence + The Machine Dance Fever
I have liked all of Flo + the Machine’s albums and their 5th album drops 5/13!
Liam Gallagher C’mon You Know
The former Oasis singer has been super prolific in recent years and in some cases he has exceeded his brother Noel’s post-Oasis work too. I was a big fan of Liam’s 2017 album As You Were. The new one features some collaborations with Dave Grohl too. New album drops 5/27.
Wilco Cruel Country
The 12th album from Wilco is a full return to country for the band. Since their excellent 2019 album Ode to Joy, I’ve actually gone back and picked up several of their previous albums, so I’m psyched for this new double album, which drops 5/27.
In a Category All Its Own:
my Birthday on 5/20

time to celebrate!

Quarantine Netflix Recs
Since were all at home watching Netflix I thought I would give my fav show/movie for every letter so everyone has something new to watch. Please send me your own recommendations or make your own alphabet list and tag me! Here goes:
A: Anne with an E- This modern take on Ann of Green Gables is quirky, fun, and dramatic. It has good music, writing and is all around a good watch. It deviates from the books a bit, but keeps the spirit.
Tumblr media
B: Broadchurch- If you like crime dramas, this is for you. With one crime spanning the complete first season it delves deep into motive and emotions. David Tennet stars in this tense British mystery.
Tumblr media
C: Cargo- A dystopian zombie apocalypse film set in Australia with a focus on human connection, and sacrifice. This is honestly so different than any other zombie movie I have seen in the best way.
Tumblr media
D: Daybreak- Sticking with the apocalypse theme, daybreak is a humorous view on what happens when a nuke kills all the adults and leaves all the teenagers. Its like if high school was the whole world, but the world had also ended. Strong characters and ‘Ferris Bueller’ esc fourth wall breaks give this show something special.
Tumblr media
E: The Worlds Most Extrodiary Homes- For a change of pace this mindlessly beautiful home reality show shows off architecture that could be classified as art and makes me wonder how anyone can actually live here. If you just want something with no stakes what so ever, this is the eye candy for you.
Tumblr media
F: Frontier- A gritty, and dark period piece starring Jason Momoa as the badass outlaw working against the British in the Canadian wilderness. Half political, half survival drama this show focus on the fur trade during the 1700s as well as themes like revenge, family history and love.
Tumblr media
I have to do two for F: Feel Good- This emotional comedy is about Mae, a gay, ex-addict comic and her previously straight girlfriend. It is real and emotional and hilarious. It’s filled with amazing characters and amazing writing and explores hard to talk about subjects, including addiction, love, coming out, and family and romanitc relationships.
Tumblr media
G: Godless- A refreshing addition to the western genre. An injuryed outlaw, a headstrong widow, the whole of the wild west. Gritty and dramatic, this mini series is a must watch
Tumblr media
H: How it Ends- Another apocalypse film, can you guys see a pattern? This one is less about the event however and more about family. A young man and his future father-in-law travel across the desolate wasteland of the USA to save his fiance.
Tumblr media
I: I am Not Okay with This- A sci-fi coming of age story, based on a comic book, about a young girl who develops mysterious superpowers and is not okay with it. Also shes gay and in love with her best friend, its great.
Tumblr media
J: John Mulaney- I assume everyone has already seen all of his specials, but if you haven’t go check them out! They are hilarious and relatable on a deep level.
Tumblr media
K: Klaus- This is my new favorite Christmas movie. Its got wit, charm, great character development and beautiful animation. It’s the first original Christmas movie that I've liked. It gives a new spin to all your favorite Christmas traditions while holding on to the essence of the Christmas spirit.
Tumblr media
L: Let it Snow- Based of the book co-written by Maureen Johnson, John Green, and Lauren Myracle this film is a feel good romance with quicky characters that have thier lives changed forever by a snowstorm in their small hometown. Friendships and romances are formed and tested as these teens figure out how to deal with what life throws at them.
Tumblr media
M: Maniac: In an unlikely pair Emma Stone and Jonah Hill work amazingly well together in a drug trial that is supposed to cure all mental illness, of course not everything goes as planned. Our heroes go through multiple stages of the trial and discover their brains are miraculously linked. This series merges multiple genres into something surprisingly cohesive.
Tumblr media
N: National Treasure- “I’m gonna steal the declaration of Independence”
Tumblr media
O: The OA- A psychological sci-fi thiller about a blind girl who gets kidnapped and held prisoner by a mad scientist looking for other dimensions. The friends she makes along the way mean everything, but when she gets found not only are they missing, but she can see again.
Tumblr media
P: Princess and the Frog- A cute Disney twist of the classic fairy tale. A young woman working hard to buy her own restaurant meets a prince that has been turned into a frog by a shady magic man. But when she kisses him he doesn’t turn human, she turns frog. Together they have to figure out how to get back to being human and along the way they learn what they really need.
Tumblr media
Q: apparently I have never watched a single thing on Netflix that starts with Q. So Queer Eye I guess. I’ve never watched it, but I've heard good things.
R: The Rain- After a deadly virus is discovered in the rain, sister and brother, Simone and Rasmus are separted from thier family and hide in a bunker for 6 years. Once they are forced to emerge they discover the world is much different than how they left it and their family wasnt all they thought it was.
Tumblr media
S: Sense 8- This sci-fi drama focuses on 8 people from all over the world connected by some kind of psychic link. As they discover the extent of thier new abilities they also find out they aren’t the only ones and some others aren’t so friendly. This series was made with so much love and divotion and it shows throughout. The character development and backstories are rich, the writing is witty and thoughtful and the representation and focus on love above all else is so refreshing.
Tumblr media
T: Tallulah- This drama is dark and witty, while simultaneously being bright and uplifting. When a young drifter kidnaps a baby from a neglectful mother and pretends the baby is hers, her boyfriends mother takes them in. The story is about family and doing the right thing, even when you can’t find the right choice in the grey area.
Tumblr media
U: The Umbrella Academy- This series based on a comic book written by Gerard Way is about superheroes with out being about superheroes. They don’t save the day. They can barely save themselves, oh and also the world. Numbered 1-7 these siblings all have their own issues and getting them to work together was the dying wish of their asshole of a father.
Tumblr media
V: None? Anyone have any ideas?
W: The Witcher- This series, based on a video game based on a book, is about a mysterious monster hunter and the bard he meets a long the way. Somehow full of action and also full of humor this series delves deep into the history and culture of this fantasy world.
Tumblr media
X, Y, Z: I got nothing guys, but thanks for reading all the way down here. I hope you watch some of these shows and that you send some of your own recs to me!
Also None of these photos or shows or anything are mine and all belong to their rightful owners

Ok so I can clearly see that Normal Book is not going to win (I am satisfied with the Pact sweep, it's my favorite book of all time for a reason) but but BUT I don't have many excuses to talk non-wildbow books on my blog so, hey, here I am with my recommendation.
Blindsight is a 2006 hard sci-fi first contact novel written by canadian marine biologist, author and flesh-eating-disease survivor Peter Watts. Set in near future, a world where a huge chunk of the population hides in digital Heavens while the rest participates in a sort of transhuman scientific arms race, it follows the story of Siri Keeton, whose parents, after a series of epileptic fits their son suffered at young age, have half of his brain removed and replaced with a bunch of wires (or, as he prefers to say, have their only child killed and replaced with something else). Working as a synthesist - the bridge between transhuman scientists and their baseline employers - he uses his unique condition to explain, but never quite understand, discoveries at the forefront of science. That is, until few thousands coordinated extraterrestrial objects enter the Earth's atmosphere, take a photo of our entire planet and burn in the orbit in the largest and most terrifying light show humanity ever experienced. Suddenly out of job (due in no small part to the government's interference) he finds himself with 7 other weirdos on board of the Theseus, most advanced rocket Earth's engineers could produce, heading on a diplomatic mission to an Oort cloud a relatively short journey from Earth, neither he or the rest of the crew quite prepared for what they're going to find there...
IMAGINE YOU ARE Siri Keeton.
You wake in an agony of resurrection, gasping after a record-shattering bout of sleep apnea spanning one hundred forty days. You can feel your blood, syrupy with dobutamine and leuenkephalin, forcing its way through arteries shriveled by months on standby. The body inflates in painful increments: blood vessels dilate, flesh peels apart from flesh, ribs crack in your ears with sudden unaccustomed flexion. Your joints have seized up through disuse. You’re a stick man, frozen in some perverse rigor vitae.
You’d scream if you had the breath.
There is many many reasons to like Blindsight: Watt's writing style is amazing, his worldbuidling and characters on point and the concepts he explores so mind boggling I still think about them daily a full month after reading. It has scientifically accurate vampires allergic to euclidean geometry, it has a bald buff military lady with a robot army, it has the most terrifying space station I have ever seen playing chatbot with humanity, it has at least 100 different banger quotes I have to stop myself from pasting all over this post and too many bonkers takes on evolution and consciousness to count. It's really one of those books you want to go into as blind as you can, so I really can't tell you much more, one way or the other. You just have to imagine you are Siri Keeton.
Anyway, have fun reading Pact. That one is fun too. I like that one bird fella and the mermaid lady, they were chill.

4x12 - Old Souls
Wynonna Earp's over. I'll do pretty much anything to get another season, but shows (not that I think that this show could ever get to that point. id still love WE even if it turned into whatever Grey's Anatomy's doing rn) shouldn't overstay their welcome. If this is the end, than it was a damn fine ending!
-
The cute.
I've been watching Martina sing since I was 11 years old, and it still puts a smile on my face. Rachel was iconic as always, and I'm gonna miss the most recent addition to the Earp family. I can just imagine the chaos of her, her not really but kind of boyfriend, and Randy Nedley on a tiny boat in the middle of nowhere. Poor Nedley. Let's hope Chrissy remains the only one of his many daughter figures to catch mono.
Speaking of mononucleosis- that's such an awful transition that i'm keeping it, I believe that Wayhaught has officially christened the entire homestead. Bedroom, The Stairs, kitchen floor, barn- short of just going to pound town (i'm not getting any better with sex references tonight. am i) in a patch of grass outside, they've got everything covered. Or nothing covered if you know what i mean. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge. Am I getting better now?
-
The random.
Nedley walking Nicole down the isle, Wynonna walking Waverly down the isle, Doc being Waverly's best man, and Wynonna being Nicole's best friend (no she will not take a secondary title. best friend will go on her tombstone)- sigh, i'm so gay. i can't really explain what that has to do with these circumstances, but i am and this makes me happy. Rachel and Nedley (and Billy was there somewhere right?) being the only people in attendance made this the perfect pandemic wedding even though there wasn't actually a pandemic in Earp land. I was the living embodiment of the pleading face emoji when they panned over the chairs. Doll's chair hurt me. like deeply. like i'm still suffering. there aren't words. fuck, i miss him.
On a lighter note, Waverly said fuck (like eight times)!!! She technically said it already, but chainsmoking-angelic possession doesn't count, right?
I'm glad that Jeremy has this new thing with Damon, but I kinda wish things had worked out with him and Robin. He officiated a wedding, got promoted, and got a handsome date in one afternoon, so I can't be too sad about his adorable self.
Charlotte Sullivan, the jilted dress shop owner/witch, played one of the earliest (in my knowledge at least. this show was my brother's thing not mine) representation of a bi woman in Canadian media. I don't know too much about her Rookie Blue character, but if you can have tolerated the will-they-wont-they, end of the world romance of the main character's kinda mediocre relationships for a couple more seasons, I'm sure you'll find out! By the nature of Canada having 16.87 actors in total, I tend to see a lot of overlap, and I have to infodump about that somewhere. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The Earping callbacks! Wynonna's truck, her motorcycle, the bullet proof vest, Nedley and Nicole's father-daughter thing, Waverly never saying the f-word (and subverting that), i'm all in, even Rachel always being stuck with juice while the adults are drinking- perfect! We had a little bit of the usual supernatural insanity, but this episode was wall to wall fanservice, and it was perfectly in-character fanservice. That's the way to go! It didn't feel forced or awkward and the edited mailbox will make me tear up on rewatch
-
The relationship. (aka i wanna talk about wyndoc and had no outline when i started this thing)
The Wyndoc goodbye was beautiful. I'm not into the whole you need one person to complete you kinda thing, but the implication that it didn't have to be romantic (implying that Wynonna's person was Waverly) was great. I felt that the scene worked perfectly, and might have been fine leaving it there if there was another season clearly on the horizon. With the fact that this was the series finale (i sighed so hard typing that. my poor lungs), I'm glad that they got their own happy ending.
-
The analysis.
Nicole's and Wynonna's as individual characters mirror each other in so many ways, but I'm just gonna wax poetic about one: their relationship with the GRT. Wynonna was hurt by the town, badly. She grew up with a steady stream of shitty adults and a few who told her to shake the demons out of her head and embraced the tough love mantra. It made a lot of sense that she left as an adult. Waverly was most likely the only reason she didn't skip town before that.
Nicole had a negative integer of adult role models in her life, with the murdered aunt and uncle and the whatever-the-fuck her parents were trying to be. Sure, a little trip to the Ghost River Triangle left her with trauma that she spent a lifetime repressing, but what's a little surviving a massacre under the six year old girl bridge. Am I right?
In their early lives, these characters had nothing but negative experiences in the aptly named town of Purgatory. Wynonna was drawn back into town by Curtis' letter just in time for her 27th birthday, and Nedley applied for Nicole to start working as a cop. Neither of them directly chose to come back to the Ghost River Triangle, but both of them did have the final say.
Wynonna decided pretty early on that she was going to stay no matter what. She already abandoned her sister once. How could she do it again with all of these monsters lurking in the shadows. As time went on, her circle of people expanded, but Waverly has always been the person that fight through hell and high water for. Even when fighting wasn't necessary, when it hurt her much more than it helped anything, she did it anyways because it was the only thing she could do to protect her sister. Wynonna thought it was the only thing she could do at all. This entire season, she's been fighting a war with herself, and her leaving, Waverly telling her that it was okay to leave, was the first time that took a break, took a breath since she arrived in Purgatory on her 27th birthday. Her child and the man she loves are out in the world, but she will be back with them at her side. Maybe after a quick road trip, maybe after a few years, but she will be back.
Nicole spent a majority of season 1 and 2 feeling like an outsider. Season 3 came with the realization that these people were her family and the Ghost River Triangle was her home. Early season 4 kinda shat all over that, oops. The rest of this season has been her finding her footing again. Nicole was a wandering soul, but she voluntarily staked herself to the land, vowing to protect it and the people within its borders for the rest of her life without the ability to leave, and she doesn't regret it. Her wife, her family, her people are all in this one not-so-sleepy Canadian town.
Nicole found her place, after a lifetime of searching, and Wynonna left, temporarily, after a lifetime of feeling trapped. They might seem like opposites, but both women call the same place home.
-
Originally, I watched this show was to cope with the ending of Agents of SHIELD (which I kind of used to cope with the ending of Killjoys, which featured Emily Andras as a writer in season 1 and has near identical humor, found family, and a healthy serving of gay and wow this is turning into a bit of advertisement isn't it), but it wormed its way into my heart. I've never quite seen a show like this. Never seemed interested in a western, even a sci-fi western. Never saw the gay couple reach OTP status both in fandom and canon. I've never seen so many fan conventions dedicated to just one show. I usually stay for just one character (and Wynonna has become one of my all time favorite characters), but I find myself connecting with so many of the beautiful people being brought to life on my screen. Wynonna, Waverly, Nicole, Rachel, Dolls, Jeremy, Doc, Nedley and so many other hilarious and heartbreaking characters make this show, and every single human who played a part in this self-proclaimed shitshow deserves a round of applause and a swig of whiskey.
The end.

hey i keep seeing The Terror stuff from you and I have no idea what it's about. If you have time could you tell me about the synopsis and what you like about it?
you don’t know the beast you’ve awoken with this ask...... hold on, gotta turn my chair around and sit down on it arms folded like a substitute teacher
*CLEARS THROAT*
Tumblr media
WHAT IS THE TERROR?
the terror (2018) is a 10-episode AMC miniseries adapted from dan simmons’ 2006 book* of the same name. it was adapted by david kajganich (who you might know as the screenwriter of the Suspiria remake) and soo hugh.
(*something you should know about the book is that unlike in the case of many adaptations, the show is generally acknowledged to be much better, for many reasons. such as eliminating much of the book’s racism and homophobia and weird obsession with pubic hair. do not feel that you have to read the book either before or after watching the show.)
BUT WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
the terror is based on the REAL, TRUE STORY of Franklin’s Lost Expedition.
a little background: in the mid-19th century, the british navy didn’t have a lot going on, due to there being no war, but they had all these sailors and officers without anything to do SO they started sending out ships on voyages to the far north and south (among other places) as part of the Discovery Service.
the admiralty REALLY REALLY wanted to find the famed “northwest passage” through the canadian archipelago to the pacific, which Europeans had been looking for for hundreds of years at that point. there were a few expeditions in the 1820s that managed to come REALLY CLOSE, so the admiralty were positive that in the 1840s it was time to send out a massive, fully-manned expedition of 130+ men to be the one to finally complete the passage.
the two ships, Erebus and Terror, commanded by Sir John Franklin, were last spotted in 1845 in the north atlantic, a few months after leaving england.... and after that they straight-up disappeared.
DUN DUN DUNNNNNN!
cue 20 years of searching, which slowly revealed a tragic story that ended up with every member of the expedition dead of starvation, sickness, or exposure. hundreds of artifacts were discovered by searchers including bodies, campsites, and evidence of cannibalism.
the show picks up after the ships disappeared, and takes you on a speculative, supernatural-tinged character-driven journey to explain exactly what happened to the ships and their crew, and how they came to perish in such conditions.
one of the wonderful things about the show is that the inuit perspective is heavily featured, and in fact the whole plot is essentially an indictment of the colonialist expansionism that the expedition was a tool of. like, yes, the white characters are sympathetic, but the narrative doesn’t pull punches in condemning their overall mission. which is 👌
WHO’S IN IT?
one of the best things about this show is its wildly talented ensemble cast. there’s really something for everyone.
of course you have your protagonist, played by the award-winning actor Jared Harris, in a role that runs the emotional gamut from wounded romantic to grouchy alcoholic to Team Dad to solemn atoner:
Tumblr media
and you have your deuteragonist played by the confoundingly handsome Tobias Menzies, who is all shine and gloss on the surface but hides a secret past:
Tumblr media
you have your kindhearted cinnamon role of a doctor played by Paul Ready:
Tumblr media
and your sneaky gay rat of an antagonist played by Adam Naigaitis:
Tumblr media
and your stubborn, strong trainee shaman played by Nive Nielsen:
Tumblr media
this is only the tip of the iceberg (... no pun intended), there are literally dozens of amazing secondary characters each with individual meticulously-plotted arcs of growth and change, a lot of whom you’ll only awaken to on your third or fourth watch through. although tbf even if you only only watch it once you’ll enjoy the major arcs !!!
and YES there’s canon gay, i feel like this is important to establish. multiple pairings in fact!!!!!
BUT ALLEGRA WHY DO YOU, SPECIFICALLY, GO INSANE OVER IT?
so i’m mostly a genre fan, i like sci-fi and fantasy and the odd procedural. the terror is possibly the first “historical” show i’ve really gone wild over to this level.
HOWEVER make no mistake, it is also genre show! there are monsters and magic in it! the creators have gone on record saying they were influenced by sci-fi and horror in the way they constructed the world and its aesthetic.
just like so many of my favorite sci-fi shows, the terror is about survival and the fear of the unknown and the importance of finding human connection in the face of mortal peril. truly my shit!!!!!
meanwhile i’m having a lot of fun immersing myself in the early-victorian time period and aesthetic and writing style, learning about the historical background of the characters — there’s SO MUCH the show leaves out, these dudes were straight-up living fucking soap opera lives — and exploring the more understated aspects of the minor players.
and just like any property with a Tragic Ending it’s very fun and life-affirming to engage with all the what-if and the fix-it and everyone lives/nobody dies tropes, To Cope™
IN CONCLUSION, THEY:

30 Questions Quiz!!!
I think this is the first time I’ve ever done something like this, but I was tagged by @katninjagirl97 and it looks like fun. Why not?
Name: Jillian...or Jill...or really anything of that variation. Hell, I’ll even answer to “hey you”. Though online I mostly go by “Wolf” or “Wolfheart”.
Gender: Female
Star Sign: Virgo
Height: Like...5′2, 5′3. I did not inherit the gift of height like my siblings did.
Time: 2:50 am
Birthday: September 18th
Favorite Bands: Gosh that’s a hard question to answer....Does Broadway count? Most of my music is from musicals, movies, video games, etc. not gonna lie. If not, The Crane Wives are a recent find of mine that I absolutely love. Same with Hidden Citizens (very good for that intense, cinematic music).
Favorite Solo Artists: Tommee Profitt (also that sort of intense, cinematic, movie trailer-esque music, though a bit more orchestral) also, Karliene (she sings a lot of folk music and things like that. Definitely recommend looking her stuff up on Youtube 10/10).
Song Stuck In My Head: “Running with the Wolves” by AURORA (specifically the version from Wolfwalkers, which I haven’t watched yet but REALLY want to) It’s been in my head since I found it a few weeks ago, I swear.
Last Movie: Hmmm...I mean...I’m watching Troy (2004) as I write this for my Greek History class. Not finished yet tho. It’s kinda meh, but it’s mandatory.
Last Show: Gosh I haven’t sat down and watched an actual TV show in so long....This is gonna sound nerdy as hell, but my family and I watch Jeopardy during dinner most nights. Does that count???
When Did I Create This Blog: Late 2019, if I’m not mistaken. December or November, I think.
What Do I Post: My own art (which I haven’t done in MONTHS...Art block mixed with school is a deadly combo), other peoples’ lovely art and writing, and pretty much anything I find interesting, important, or funny. I also kinda use it to archive stuff I like in general, like drawing refs and tips.
Last Thing I Googled: “How long did it take to send a letter from Europe to North America in the 1700s?”....I’m a history nerd, this shouldn’t be surprising. The thought just randomly struck me and I was curious. The answer is roughly 2-3 months, if you’re wondering.
Other Blogs: Nah, just this one.
Do I Get Asks: The odd time, but mostly only when I do prompts or art challenges.
Why I Chose This URL: Oh god....It’s the same as my DeviantART, and I created it when I was 11 or 12 during my Warriors phase. Don’t judge me. We all had one and some people still like it and there’s no shame in that. Though I have been thinking of changing it to something slightly different lately. Hmm....
Following: 124. They’re mostly other artists, fashion (both modern & historical), themed art blogs (tutorials, sci-fi, etc.), and just some funny ones (like...I follow one blog that specifically only posts funny medieval manuscript drawings of animals soooo....).
Followers: 283. I don’t know many of you guys, but I appreciate y’all very much!!!! ❤
Average Hours Of Sleep: Can be anywhere between 5 and 9. My sleep schedule is kinda a mess...
Lucky Number: 3 or 4
Instruments: I used to be able to play the flute, but I haven’t in years.
What I’m Wearing: A tank-top and jean shorts...Because you know, that’s a totally reasonable thing to wear in the middle of winter in Canada.
Dream Job: Hmm...Probably anything revolving around history or art. I’d love to teach history tbh, as a teacher or prof. idk yet. I used to want to be a Concept Artist, which is still definitely something I’d be open to!
Dream Trip: I’d love to do a tour of western Europe tbh. Like, England, Ireland, Scotland, etc. See all those old castles and everything. 😍
Favorite Food: Pretty much any seafood. Especially fish or shrimp. Love that stuff. Or any breakfast food really. I love that stuff.
Nationality: Canadian 🍁
Favorite Song: THAT’S EVEN HARDER TO ANSWER THAN THE FIRST MUSIC QUESTION....It changes depending on the day...If I had to say right now??? “Jenny of Oldstones” by Florence + the Machine (I haven’t watched Game of Thrones yet, but I really want to). It gives off good and sad vibes at the same time, idk how.
Last Book I Read: Hmm....I haven’t finished a book in a while, but I’ve been working my way through Assassin’s Creed: Forsaken by Oliver Bowden the past few months. Very good so far! But also very sad. Why do I always get attached to asshole characters with sad backstories that make me wanna cry???
Top Three Fictional Universes I’d Like To Live In: Oooooh....Marvel is definitely one (get me some cool superpowers or magic, ya know?). Hmm....maybe something like Harry Potter (screw J.K Rowling tho, I just want magic powers). Aaaannd...maybe Skyrim? That could be cool!!! Ride around on dragons and shit, become badass warrior or mage, be a werewolf or vampire, so many options!!!
As for someone to tag....oof...Imma be honest I don’t know many people on this site. 😅 Maybe @bayheart if she’s feeling up to it since we’ve been chatting lately! No pressure though. 😄 And also anyone who would like to do it!

How the Saving Private Ryan Cast Launched a New Generation of Stars
https://ift.tt/3azDVUj
This article contains spoilers for Saving Private Ryan.
Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan (1998) is known for a number of things: the gut-wrenching, visceral terror of its battle scenes (especially the opening landing at Omaha Beach), the shocking way in which bodies are torn to pieces during the course of those battles, the attention to period detail, and a powerful performance by Tom Hanks that rates as one of his finest.
But one thing that the film may not be as widely recognized for is the lineup of young actors who played members of Capt. John Miller’s (Hanks) squad, or soldiers they met along the way as they searched throughout Normandy for the missing Pvt. James Francis Ryan. From Matt Damon to Vin Diesel, Spielberg recruited relatively new faces who were all, in one way or another, either launching their careers outright or just starting to make their mark on Hollywood.
Saving Private Ryan is now considered one of the greatest war movies of all time. Part of that is due to its incredible realism, part of that is due to the skilled direction by Spielberg at the top of his game, and no doubt part of it is thanks to the work of its youthful cast. Let’s look back at who those actors were then, and what they went on to accomplish afterward.

DreamWorks
Matt Damon (Private James Francis Ryan)
Matt Damon was largely unknown until around 1996 when he gained some good critical notices for his role in Courage Under Fire. At the same time, he and childhood pal Ben Affleck got to finally see their screenplay Good Will Hunting filmed, with Damon in the title role. The movie was in rehearsals in Boston when Steven Spielberg — who was shooting some scenes for Amistad there — stopped by the set to visit with Robin Williams, who introduced Spielberg to Damon. That led to Damon getting the title role in Saving Private Ryan. He’s the young soldier than Tom Hanks and company are trying to find — and who must “earn” his ticket home.
By the time Ryan came out in mid-1998, Damon had gone from unknown to star thanks to the success of Good Will Hunting (which arrived in December 1997), and his and Affleck’s Oscar win for Best Original Screenplay instantly became the stuff of award season legend. Damon has stayed a superstar ever since, starring in the Bourne and Ocean’s Eleven franchises, along with other hits like The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Departed, True Grit, Contagion, The Martian, and Ford vs. Ferrari. Next up for Damon is in Stillwater and reteams with Affleck as co-writers and stars in Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel, both due out later this year.
DreamWorks
Edward Burns (Private Richard Reiben)
Ed Burns had already garnered some attention before landing the role of the feisty, rebellious Pvt. Reiben, one of the few members of Miller’s squad to survive the film. He wrote, produced, directed, and starred in two independent features, The Brothers McMullen and She’s The One, with McMullen in particular earning acclaim and awards (including an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature).
Reiben was Burns’ first role in a major Hollywood production, and he followed that up with parts in films like 15 Minutes (2001), Confidence (2003), Life or Something Like It (2002, and the notoriously bad sci-fi thriller, A Sound of Thunder (2005). He also continued to make his own pictures, including No Looking Back (1998), Ash Wednesday (2002), Newlyweds (2011) and Beneath the Blue Suburban Skies (2019), while also creating, directing and starring in a TV series called Public Morals (2015) that lasted for one season on TNT. Not exactly a household name, Burns has nevertheless remained active and prolific.
DreamWorks
Vin Diesel (Private Adrian Caparzo)
Before being cast as Pvt. Caparzo — the first member of Miller’s squad to die while searching for Ryan — the only credits Vin Diesel had to his name were a short film called Multi-Facial, an uncredited walk-on as an orderly in 1990’s Awakenings, and the tiny 1997 indie release Strays, a semi-autobiographical piece which Diesel wrote, directed, and starred in himself. He was, for all intents and purposes, a complete unknown when he was gunned down by a German sniper in a memorably tragic scene early on in Saving Private Ryan.
Things happened quickly for Diesel after that, as he landed the title voice in The Iron Giant (1999) and launched two franchises back to back: in 2000 he introduced the world to the space criminal Riddick in Pitch Black while 2001 brought the film The Fast and the Furious, not to mention Diesel’s signature character, Dominic Toretto. While his other films since have had varying degrees of success, the Fast and Furious series has turned into one of the biggest box office behemoths of the past decade, with F9 coming this summer. Diesel has also played in the world of comic book movies, voicing Groot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and launching his own superhero film venture with last year’s Bloodshot.
DreamWorks
Paul Giamatti (Sergeant William Hill)
The same sequence that features the death of Vin Diesel’s character also introduces the sardonic, war-weary Sgt. William Hill, played by Paul Giamatti, whose inadvertent collapse of a wall leads to a tense standoff with a hidden group of German soldiers. Before Ryan, Giamatti had bounced around in small film and TV parts for the early part of the ’90s, scoring his breakout role in the 1997 Howard Stern biopic, Private Parts, as radio station program director Kenny “Pig Vomit” Rushton.
After Ryan, Giamatti continued to work steadily and garner more acclaim for outstanding performances in films like Man on the Moon, American Splendor, and Sideways, a movie for which we’re still angry that Giamatti did not receive an Academy Award nomination. He did earn one the following year for his supporting role in Cinderella Man and has continued as one of today’s best working actors in movies like Barney’s Version, Win Win, The Ides of March, 12 Years a Slave, and Private Life, along with his exemplary starring work in TV on John Adams and Billions. He even won an Emmy for playing the United States’ second president.
DreamWorks
Nathan Fillion (Private James Frederick Ryan)
He’s only onscreen for a few minutes, but Nathan Fillion makes a distinct impression as the “wrong” Pvt. Ryan, a soldier with nearly the same name whom Miller and his men come across — only to realize that they have to keep looking. The Canadian-born Fillion first scored some attention in the mid-1990s as Joey Buchanan on the daytime soap One Life to Live (he returned briefly in 2007). Aside from an obscure 1994 film called Strange and Rich, Saving Private Ryan was for all intents and purposes his major motion picture debut.

Since then, Fillion has worked steadily with his biggest successes coming on TV and in the world of geek culture, where he remains a fan favorite. The Joss Whedon-created sci-fi series Firefly didn’t even last one full season between 2001 and 2002, but has become a cult classic and spawned the movie Serenity (2005). Fillion’s later series, Castle and the currently airing The Rookie, have proven more durable. His other notable film and TV credits include James Gunn’s Slither, Desperate Housewives, Modern Family, Santa Clarita Diet, and Monsters University, while his voice work has also included a recurring role as Green Lantern/Hal Jordan in a number of DC animated films. Next up: more comics-related fun as Floyd Belkin/TDK in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, and the voice of Wonder Man in Hulu and Marvel’s animated M.O.D.O.K.
DreamWorks
Jeremy Davies (Corporal Timothy Upham)
Jeremy Davies is unforgettable as the terrified, cowardly Cpl. Upham, a nerdy translator who is brought on the mission for his linguistic skills and can only stand paralyzed paralyzed with fear as his fellow soldier Mellish is stabbed to death just up a flight of stairs by a Nazi. Like many of his castmates, Davies kicked around in small acting jobs before garnering acclaim in the 1994 black comedy Spanking the Monkey, which also marked the directing debut of David O. Russell.
Saving Private Ryan was his next big attention-getter and cemented his position as one of the more quirky and compelling character actors in film and TV. Following Ryan, Davies worked in films like Ravenous, Solaris, Secretary, and Rescue Dawn, but has also found success on the small screen in series like Lost, Sleepy Hollow, and Justified. He’s also appeared as Dr. John Deegan in the “Elseworlds” arc of the Arrowverse shows The Flash, Supergirl, and Arrow. We’ll see him next in Scott Derrickson’s The Black Phone, based on a story by Joe Hill.
DreamWorks
Giovanni Ribisi (Medic Irwin Wade)
Acting since he was a young child, Giovanni Ribisi already had a substantial career under his belt before playing the doomed medic Wade in Spielberg’s powerful war epic. He had recurring roles in the late 1980s and early 1990s on shows like My Two Dads and The Wonder Years while guesting on a number of other series as well. In the latter half of the ‘90s, he landed parts in movies like That Thing You Do!, Lost Highway, and The Postman, with Ryan easily his highest-profile big screen effort during that time.
After that, Ribisi continued to do character work in movies like Gone in 60 Seconds, Lost in Translation, Cold Mountain, and Public Enemies, before landing the part of the villainous corporate stooge Parker Selfridge in James Cameron’s massively successful and creatively groundbreaking Avatar (2009). He’ll return in Cameron’s upcoming Avatar sequels and has kept busy on the big and small screens, most recently finishing up a three-season run in the title role of the Amazon series Sneaky Pete (fun fact: Sneaky Pete was co-created by Bryan Cranston, who also has a small role in Ryan as one-armed War Department Col. Bryce).
DreamWorks
Barry Pepper (Private Daniel Jackson)
Hailing like Nathan Fillion from Canada, Barry Pepper had just a handful of small credits to his name when he landed the role of the God-fearing but lethal sniper Jackson in Saving Private Ryan. Jackson is perhaps the deadliest weapon in Capt. Miller’s arsenal, although he is eventually killed along with Miller and most of the others during the film’s climactic defense of the bridge in the shattered town of Ramelle.
Pepper probably remains best known for his portrayal of Jackson, but he scored notable roles soon after that in The Green Mile (1999), the TV movie 61* (2001) as baseball legend Roger Maris, and Spike Lee’s 25th Hour (2002). He also appeared in the starring role of 2000’s disastrous Battlefield Earth with John Travolta. Pepper’s recent film work has included roles in The Maze Runner franchise and the sleeper horror hit Crawl (2019).
DreamWorks
Adam Goldberg (Private Stanley Mellish)
“Juden,” says Pvt. Stanley Mellish, pointing to himself and the Jewish Star of David he wears around his neck as a stream of German POWs is marched past him. It’s a small but powerful moment in Saving Private Ryan for the defiant, wisecracking Mellish, who’s there to wipe out as many Nazis as he can. In the movie’s climactic battle, he bravely and viciously fights hand to hand with a German soldier before the latter sinks a knife slowly into his chest in one of the film’s most intensely horrifying moments.
Adam Goldberg had already appeared in a number of notable films before Ryan, including Billy Crystal’s Mr. Saturday Night (Goldberg’s 1992 debut), Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused (1993), John Singleton’s Higher Learning (1995), and the cult horror classic The Prophecy (1995). Mellish remains perhaps his most famed role, but other standouts like A Beautiful Mind (2001), Déjà Vu (2006), and Zodiac (2007) dot his filmography. He’s guested frequently on TV as well and currently has a regular role as Harry Keshegian opposite Queen Latifah on The Equalizer. He’s also directed three features of his own, recorded four albums of his own music, and has exhibited his work as a photographer.
