I've just learned about an indigenous Brazilian flute which, at first glance, looks almost exactly like an indigenous Southern African flute (not the part of Africa where slaves were taken to the Americas, so they must have been independent inventions !). I can't find any recordings or video of either flute online, but I think they're only visually/superficially similar, which is fascinating
Tumblr media
this is a traditional flute of the Apinajé, a branch of the Gê-speaking indigenous peoples from central Brazil (link to another example at the Swedish Ethnographic museum here). it is (in German) described as : "Pfeife mit kleinem Schallkürbis der Träger des Namens Tamgaága" (the Museum lists "Tamgaága" as the local name of the flute, but I think that was actually the name of the original owner. the word has a few hits on google in Portuguese articles and seems to be a personal name, and it has 0 hits for anything flute-like. anyone who can read Portuguese please verify)
Tumblr media
and these are the "ombgwe" and "khumbgwe", traditional flutes of the Shona-Karanga and Venḓa peoples of Zimbabwe and South Africa (from P. R. Kirby, 1934 (2nd ed. 1968) The Musical Instruments of the Native Races of South Africa, Plate 45)
Although they look alike superficially, I think they're actually played from the opposite ends. below is the archival card from the Göteborg Museum for the Apinajé flute :
Tumblr media
it suggests there are some more details in "comment no. 5 in the original catalogue," which I'm pretty sure is this one from 1931 (link to readable version on Google Books here). although I can figure out a brief catalogue entry, I don't actually speak Swedish so finding the relevant passage in that whole book has proved difficult...
anyway. the point is that looking at the sketch and hole placement on the calabash resonator, I'm fairly sure the flute is played by blowing across the top of the reed pipe, just as you would play panpipe for example, and the pitch is changed using the finger holes on the calabash at the bottom. if the finger holes were at the top, it would make the remaining pipe length irrelevant so I can't imagine it's played the other way around. also think of the western oboe family of instruments, which have a bulbous bell at the bottom to affect the timbre.
now, consider the Shona-Karanga ombgwe. Kirby provides a photo of one being played in his book cited above, and Margaret de Lange describes the playing technique in the catalogue of the old Africana Museum in Johannesburg.
the ombgwe is played with the gourd (or nsala fruit shell) at the top, blowing across a mouth hole just as you would on a Chinese xun for example, and the reed pipe extends downwards. the finger holes are once again on the bottom of the instrument, ie on the reed tube of the ombgwe

On this day, 5 February 1885, King Leopold of Belgium declared his new colony the Congo Free State. What followed was one of the most horrific examples of European colonialism, as the regime began the ruthless exploitation of the local population, forcing them to extract natural resources and ship them back to Belgium. 8 to 10 million Africans were killed, with many more mutilated for acts as minor as failing to hit production targets. This is IMPORTANT — you should know and understand this bit of history...
Patrice Lumumba: May Africa breathe the air of freedom
... Between 1880 and 1920, the Congo lost approximately half of its population. An estimated eight to ten million Africans died as victims of King Leopold’s “rubber-terror.” There is the infamous picture of a Congolese worker called Nsala who was presented with the severed hand and foot of his five-year-old daughter, Boali, as punishment for him failing to meet his rubber quota for the day.
Despite these terrors, initially, Lumumba expressed his sympathy for the Belgian colonisers, he rejected independence as premature, and was favourable to the creation of a federation uniting Belgium and Congo as a continuation of the colony of the Congo.
Lumumba’s faith in the system began to waver when realized that despite the many efforts required for attaining a higher status, the Congolese remained less than human in the eyes of the Belgians. And nothing could change that. Because Congolese status was tied to their Blackness. And nothing could change that. When Lumumba saw other African states achieving independence, his resolve for Congolese independence was strengthened. Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana encouraged Lumumba to be Pan-African. So, Lumumba founded the Mouvement National Congolais (MNC) in 1958, a political party, to help realize the Pan-African project. In his view, a unified and independent Congolese state, representing all the Congolese people democratically, was a prerequisite for joining the rest of Africa in accomplishing the Pan-African dream.
After extensive negotiations between the Belgians and the Congolese nationalist leaders – including Lumumba – elections were planned for May and June 1960 and independence was scheduled for 30 June 1960. A coalition led by Lumumba won the elections and he was appointed Prime Minister of the new government with Joseph Kasa-Vubu as President. At independence he gave a strident speech which vilified the colonial order and eulogised the struggle that brought it to an end, saying ‘We are proud of this struggle, of tears, of fire, and of blood, to the depths of our being, for it was a noble and just struggle, and indispensable to put an end to the humiliating slavery which was imposed upon us by force.’
Many in the West were alarmed by his speech. And with that speech, as the events that followed suggest, Patrice Lumumba may have signed his own death warrant.
On the 11th of July, with the support of the Belgian government, Katanga – the mineral-rich economic heart of the Congo – seceded. In the ensuing chaos, Lumumba was dismissed as PM by Kasa Vubu on the 5th of September 1960. Lumumba in turn took over the radio airwaves to denounce and depose Kasa-Vubu as a traitor. The constitutional crisis this created was ended by a coup in September of 1960 led by Colonel Mobutu (more about him later). Lumumba was arrested on the 1st of December. His imprisonment proved to be a source of sectarian tension. So on 17 January 1961, he was forcibly put on a plane to Elizabethville. On arrival, he and his associates were conducted under arrest to the Brouwez House where they were brutally beaten and tortured by Katangan and Belgian officers.
Tumblr media
Later that night, Lumumba was driven to an isolated spot where three firing squads had been assembled. A Belgian commission of inquiry found that the execution was carried out by Katanga’s authorities. It reported that President Tshombe and two other ministers were present, with four Belgian officers under the command of Katangan authorities. Lumumba, Maurice Mpolo and Joseph Okito were lined up against a tree and shot one at a time. The execution is thought to have taken place on 17 January 1961, between 21:40 and 21:43 (according to the Belgian report). The Belgians and their counterparts later wished to get rid of the bodies, and did so by digging up and dismembering the corpses, then dissolving them in sulfuric acid while the bones were ground and scattered...

Santeria, Palo Mayombe & Bantu in America.
The slave trade towards America was a millionaire business, the Spanish and Portuguese traffickers (that is why the expression "Goes with a license", meaning license as permission in Portuguese) took into account the physical conditions of its human merchandise. , then sent to America slaves between 14 and 19 years... Which meant that priests with little experience in Afro-descendant cults will arrive on our lands... No slave owner dared to take the risk for reasons that there was a slave law He said: "Slaves who are old or ill cannot work, should be fed by their owners and can not be given freedom" So how did Santeria or Palo Monte arrive?
In several books that I have investigated and conversations... The Bantues were the first to transmit through signatures what we know as their knowledge with their partners, because they had a muzzle and was forbidden to communicate ... and through strokes they did on the ground (there were no cement floors) with their fingers communicated if there was any dead (skull, if there was a Spaniard with the cross and the family with the circle) then this became an encrypted method of communication that allowed rebellions of the blacks.
The Bantues from very small were hunters and this technique worked not to give away the position with respect to some animal, from as soon as 6 years were initiated in the hunting, which implied to imitate and observe hunting techniques, herbal medicine and use of the same for the poisoning of the dams. This training could last for years but it was learning by doing, so it implies that those who came to America had a basic knowledge or were in training period.
In the same way, it happened with the Yorubas who at that young age were brought as slaves and had little more than the knowledge of those divinatory arts.
As the years passed and these slaves had children, they reached agreements to teach the Yoruba el Palo and the Bantu the Osha, so that if they were sold, the remaining one could teach their culture to the children of the absent one.

Nsala, the man in the picture, was photographed by English photographer Alice Seeley Harris (1870–1970) after he arrived at her mission clutching a parcel that contained the severed foot and hand of his five-year-old daughter in Congo, May 1904. She’d been killed and dismembered as a punishment when his village failed to meet the rubber quotas demanded by the imperial regime. Here is part of her account (from the book “Don’t Call Me Lady: The Journey of Lady Alice Seeley Harris”): “He hadn’t made his rubber quota for the day so the Belgian-appointed overseers had cut off his daughter’s hand and foot. Her name was Boali. She was five years old. Then they killed her. But they weren’t finished. Then they killed his wife too. And because that didn’t seem quite cruel enough, quite strong enough to make their case, they cannibalized both Boali and her mother. And they presented Nsala with the tokens, the leftovers from the once living body of his darling child whom he so loved. His life was destroyed. They had partially destroyed it anyway by forcing his servitude but this act finished it for him. All of this filth had occurred because one man, one man who lived thousands of miles across the sea, one man who couldn’t get rich enough, had decreed that this land was his and that these people should serve his own greed. Leopold had not given any thought to the idea that these African children, these men, and women, were our fully human brothers, created equally by the same Hand that had created his own lineage of European Royalty.” The Congo Free State was a corporate state in Central Africa privately owned by King Leopold II of Belgium founded and recognized by the Berlin Conference of 1885. In the 23 years (1885-1908) Leopold II ruled the Congo he massacred 10 million Africans by cutting off their hands and genitals, flogging them to death, starving them into forced labor, holding children ransom, and burning villages. https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj0bzFVjN95HBc1-yTBxUySTtWb2fyQdiE2POM0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Interview with Joshua Radin
A song subdues and soothes even the roughest seas. After sixteen years, eight albums, and hundreds of shows, Joshua Radin still treats music as an antidote to any ailment. The gold-selling, Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter finds healing in between waves of acoustic eloquence and dyed-in-the-wool Americana storytelling. On his ninth full-length TheGhost And The Wall [Nettwerk], the troubadour continues a cycle of catharsis meant to be shared among any and all receptive hearts. Since 2004, he’s affected countless listeners with palpable transparency. As a result, he’s sold over 1 million records, generated 1 billion-plus total streams, and garnered a gold plaque for the single “I’d Rather Be With You.” Landing north of 150 film, television, and commercial syncs, his voice courses throughout the zeitgeist. Among many highlights, First Ladies Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden personally handpicked “Brand New Day” for a commercial in support of the troops. In addition to memorable performances on Ellen, The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Conan, and Today Show, he famously serenaded avowed super fan Ellen DeGeneres and Portia DeRossi during their wedding. Beyond sold out headline shows on four continents, he has also performed alongside Ed Sheeran, Sara Bareilles, Ingrid Michaelson, Sheryl Crow, Tori Amos, Imogen Heap, and The Script. Plus, he remains a committed philanthropist, supporting charities such as Little Kids Rock and North Shore Animal League America (NSALA), among others. After returning home from a European Tour in support of his 2019 album Here, Right Now, Joshua initially planned to hunker down, write, and record a new album. Nevertheless, the circumstances of the Global Pandemic complicated the plan… That’s where producer Jonathan Wilson [Father John Misty, Conor Oberst, Dawes] comes in. One 30-minute phone conversation later, Joshua and Jonathan set about making The Ghost And The Wall remotely. Despite both being in Southern California, they opted to transfer files back and forth, crafting the entire record through the wire. Jonathan laid down the instrumentation in Topanga Canyon, and Josh cut vocals in the Hollywood Hills. Within a month, they had completed ten tracks. He paves the way for the album with the single “Better Life.” Over understated acoustic guitar, lilting vocals detail the journey of “an immigrant coming to this country and seeing the Statue of Liberty for the first time.” Folk-style picking and hushed delivery relay the anxiety of the search for “the one” on “Make It Easy.” Then, there’s “Fewer Ghosts.” A personal favorite, Joshua comes to an eye-opening realization cemented in confessional lyrics and soft tones. In the end, Joshua finds a way to heal once again on The Ghost And The Wall. We want to hear from you! BIAFRA:With Nnamdi Kanu, no hope for Biafrans - Asari Dokubo Declares.
New Post has been published on https://thebiafrastar.com/biafrawith-nnamdi-kanu-no-hope-for-biafrans-asari-dokubo-declares/
BIAFRA:With Nnamdi Kanu, no hope for Biafrans - Asari Dokubo Declares.
Tumblr media
The founder of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force (NDPVF), Mujihad Asari-Dokubo, has, again, attacked the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, saying he has derailed the Biafra struggle.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Dokubo, who said he’s a Biafran and believes in Biafra struggle, maintained that the IPOB leader was not in any struggle for the restoration of Biafra republic.
The ex-militant fighter, who spoke exclusively to Sunday Vanguard in his country home, Buguma in Kalabari Kingdom, Rivers State, opined that associating with Kanu was his greatest regret.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
“It gives me regret that in my life, I ever associated with a person called Nnamdi Kanu. That when he was in crisis, I came out to defend him. In fact, my greatest regret is associating with Nnamdi Kanu. I can’t make peace with somebody like him. It’s a foreclosed issue because he has nothing to offer other than to derail our struggle,”he stated.
“With Nnamdi Kanu, there’s no hope for Biafra. Those of us who get close to him know he’s not fighting for any Biafra. Nnamdi Kanu is just one individual in Biafra, so, we shouldn’t make him important, he’s not. He’s just like everyone one of us.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
“He’s not in any struggle. Whatever spell he has cast on the Igbo will be removed very soon and their eyes will open. When he was in trouble, all of us came out to defend him because an injury to one is an injury to all. We risked our lives by speaking in support of him, for him to be released from prison and for him not to be killed.
“Now, he sees those of us who fought on his behalf for his freedom as his followers. Some of us regret ever lending our voice. We would have left him to rot in jail because he’s caused more harm to Biafra struggle than anyone else.”
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
When asked how Kanu has caused more harm than good to the Biafra struggle, the former President of the Ijaw Youth Council retorted, “Listen to him! Don’t you listen to his broadcast? His insults to every Igbo person that disagrees with him? He has also extended his insults to other tribes including the Ijaw people.
“He’s attacking Ralph Uwazuruike and Nnia Nwodo (Ohanaeze leader). Now, he’s attacking Pa Edwin Clark who’s not a Biafran. Biafra is the former Eastern Region. Pa Clark has never been an Easterner but from the Western Region to Mid-Western Region. So he’s gone outside the Igbo to abuse Pa Clark, Isaac Boro, Ken Saro-Wiwa.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
“How can you bring unity to the people by abusing and attacking their leaders? Is Biafra struggle an Igbo struggle? He’s making it an Igbo struggle. The Biafra Nnamdi Kanu is pursuing will be worse than Southern Sudan if he wants to promote Igbo hegemony over and above Ijaw hegemony, Ibibio hegemony, and so on.
“He’s power-drunk. We are not even done with the struggle, he’s assumed the position of leadership, calling himself the supreme leader.”
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Speaking on how he fell out with the IPOB leader, Asari explained: “It was during the Anambra governorship election when he said there would be no election in the state and I disagreed with him. I said it would be a fatal mistake not to participate in the election. I told him it will be better to elect somebody who will have some form of sympathy, even if the person is not totally in the struggle, than to elect an open enemy, who will use the state resources to support our enemies. He said no and declared that day ‘Ofe nsala’ day.
“Again, during the 2019 elections, I said let’s vote out President Buhari and let the person we will vote for also know that we are the ones that supported him, so that when the person is there, even if he’s not with us, he will know that we contributed to the removal of Buhari. He said no and started calling me saboteur. At the end of the day, Nnamdi Kanu came and said people should go and vote. He said he had signed, sealed and delivered documents. Over one year and five months after the election, we have not seen the signed, sealed and delivered documents.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
“He didn’t tell us whom he signed the documents with and he did not do anything to apologize to those of us who believed that we had to participate in that election. Rather, he continued calling us names. I’m not a member of the PDP but what would have made me happy is that all of us worked together to remove Buhari. We did not do that, we failed.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
“The truth is that the vast majority of Biafrans don’t want anything to do with Nigeria. Majority of us want to leave Nigeria. So, Nnamdi Kanu through Radio Biafra has been able to reach out to some of these people and has changed the Biafra struggle into a cult struggle, who go about attacking people who are opposed to them. Before my quarrel with him, nobody was against him but now, people are no longer afraid of him.”

Tragic but true. Don't believe me, do your research. Many people were killed all because of one man's greed. The same thing still happens till this day. The only reason it continues to happen is do to everyone believing we're so different from one another; and not realizing we are one. Regardless of what you want to believe. . . . Reposted from @blackhistorystudies - The Butcher of Congo: King Leopold II of Belgium. . 'He hadn’t made his rubber quota for the day so the Belgian-appointed overseers had cut off his daughter’s hand and foot. They had partially destroyed it anyway by forcing his servitude but this act finished it for him. . All of this filth had occurred because one man, one man who lived thousands of miles across the sea, one man who couldn’t get rich enough, had decreed that this land was his and that these people should serve his own greed. Leopold had not given any thought to the idea that these African children, these men and women, were our fully human brothers, created equally by the same Hand that had created his own lineage of European Royalty.' Reposted from @wtficare - True Fact: A Father stares at the hand and foot of his five-year-old, severed as a punishment for failing to make the daily rubber quota, Belgian Congo, 1904. A Congolese man looking at the severed hand and foot of his five-year-old daughter who was killed, and allegedly cannibalized, by the members of Anglo-Belgian India Rubber Company militia. The photograph is by Alice Seeley Harris, the man’s name is Nsala. Here is part of her account (from the book “Don’t Call Me Lady: The Journey of Lady Alice Seeley Harris”): He hadn’t made his rubber quota for the day so the Belgian-appointed overseers had cut off his daughter’s hand and foot. Her name was Boali. She was five years old. Then they killed her. But they weren’t finished. Then they killed his wife too. And because that didn’t seem quite cruel enough, quite strong enough to make their case, they cannibalized both Boali and her mother. Leopold had not given any thought to the idea that these African children, these men and women, were our fully human brothers, created equally by the same Hand that had created his own lineage of European Royalty. The Congo Free State was a corporate state in Central Africa privately owned by King Leopold II of Belgium founded and recognized by the Berlin Conference of 1885. In the 23 years (1885-1908) Leopold II ruled the Congo he massacred 10 million Africans by cutting off their hands and genitals, flogging them to death, starving them into forced labour, holding children ransom and burning villages. The ironic part of this story is that Leopold II committed these atrocities by not even setting foot in the Congo. Under Leopold II’s administration, the Congo Free State became one of the g https://www.instagram.com/p/BuIXBaJA1djFSl11zs9yxCWIu9lKBTENjsFd4k0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=afsve1uq0dd8
