Book list!
I was tagged by @lilolilyr (thank you!! so fun!) to make a list of 100 books! I tried to focus on more recent reads, but added the occasional one from the past, that I enjoyed especially! But also there were quite a few I wanted to add that I couldn’t find on there :(. Those were mostly french/german books, and/or poetry/about marine animals. I don’t know if all of these count as favs. At first I had too little (I still don’t live in a dream place with a giant bookshelf lining a giant wall so I couldn’t just look there, but have many of my books in boxes :(), then I remembered fun books and had too many!
Tbh I could probably also make such a list of TBR books, I have so so many I didn’t read yet. I bought four more last week, when I was at a huge bookmarket. In the coolest markethalls! What was I supposed to do? Anyway, enough rambling, here it goes:
(The photo is from when I moved from that place I visited last week again with said bookmarket… this one was extraordinary but they had one every single day and when I moved away, I realized that this was a problem. This is just a small bit of that pile and entourage that you can see on here. yeah. but. you know. books.)
I had fun making this list, so I’ll tag people to also have fun, but no pressure! I just had the time and energy rn, which is amazing but not a given. Watch the First Trailer for Michelle Yeoh’s STAR TREK: SECTION 31
The big Star Trek Universe panel wrapped up today with a first look at the upcoming Michelle Yeoh-lead Star Trek: Section 31 movie — more than five years after the idea of a Emperor Georgiou spin-off project was first announced.   Section 31 director Olatunde Osunsanmi was joined on the Hall H stage by Trek franchise boss Alex Kurtzman and cast members Omari Hardwick, Sam Richardson and Kacey Rohl who spoke about the upcoming film set to hit Paramount+ in early 2025.   The teaser was introduced by the film’s star, Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh, by way of a special video message for the assembled SDCC audience.
youtube
The teaser gives viewers a taste of one of the Section 31 team’s missions — an action-filled visit to some kind of space nightclub, with a spaceship chase sequence — along with a hint of some of the flashbacks to Emperor Georgiou’s initial rise to power, growing up in the Mirror Universe.
Some of the cast featured in the teaser includes Kacey Rohl as Rachel Garrett (eventual captain of the Enterprise-C), Omari Hardwick, Sam Richardson (playing a Chameloid), Sven Ruygrok as a Vulcan, Humberly Gonzalez as a Deltan, and Robert Kazinsky as some sort of technologically-enhanced humanoid — perhaps an ex-Borg?

Also joining the cast is actor Miku Martineau, who portrays the younger version of Philippa Georgiou.

What this teaser does not give us is a taste of when the movie is expected to be set — the early 24th century, in the years after Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and several decades before the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Aside from Garrett’s mention of Starfleet and a few familiar Trek aliens, there’s little connection to the “Lost Era” time period we’ve been expecting since Kacey Rohl’s character was announced back in March.
More news and footage from the film will roll out in the next several months, so we’re likely to get a wider look at the world of Star Trek: Section 31 before its 2025 debut.

Star Trek: Section 31 is in post-production now.

Meet the seven new frog species we just named after iconic Star Trek captains!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Artwork by A. Petzold, CC BY-ND 4.0
At the right time of year along rushing streams in the humid rainforests that stretch the length of Madagascar's eastern and northern mountain ridges, otherworldly trills of piercing whistles can be heard.
Are they birds? Insects? Communicator beeps? Tricorder noises?
No, they're little treefrogs!
Tumblr media
Boophis janewayae. Photo by M. Vences, CC BY-SA 4.0
Until recently, we thought all of the populations of these little brown frogs across the island were one widespread species, Boophis marojezensis, described in 1994. But genetics in the early 2000s and 2010s showed that there were several species here, not just one.
Now my colleagues and I have shown that they are in fact eight separate species, each with unique calls!
These whistling sounds reminded us so much of Star Trek sound effects that we decided to name the seven new species after Star Trek captains: Boophis kirki, B. picardi, B. janewayae, B. siskoi, B. pikei, B. archeri, and B. burnhamae.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photos of all new species described by Vences et al. 2024. CC BY-SA 4.0
I subtly and not-so-subtly built some Star Trek references into the paper, but probably the best one is this one:
'Finding these frogs sometimes requires considerable trekking; pursuing strange new calls, to seek out new frogs in new forests; boldly going where no herpetologist has gone before.'
— Vences et al. 2024
There’s a real sense of scientific discovery and exploration here, which we think is in the spirit of Star Trek.
Of course, it doesn't hurt that there are at least two Trekkies amongst the authors (including yours truly). As fans of Star Trek, we are also just pleased to dedicate these new species to the characters who have inspired and entertained us over the decades.
On a personal note, this marks a milestone for me, as it means I have now described over 100 frog species! I am very pleased that the 100th is Captain Janeway's Bright-eyed Frog, Boophis janewayae (if you count them in order of appearance in the paper)—she is probably my favourite captain, and I really love Star Trek: Voyager.
You can read more about the discovery of these new species on my website! You can also read the Open Access paper published in Vertebrate Zoology here.

Music Tag Game
I was tagged by @onaperduamedee, thank you for that!
The aim is to put your music on shuffle and list the first 10 songs + tag 10 people.
Okay! I just cooked and put the music on while doing that, but I have to say, I am a big skipper, I skip 80% of the songs when I shuffle (added to the list for years but factually only listen to the same few songs on repeat for months). Let's go before my food gets too cold!
Love today (orchestra version) - MIKA
At the Library - Green Day (yeah, I skipped), there also came up Bang Bang later on, which seeing as I added the whole album in one go a long time ago, I don't count extra.
I am sad so very very sad, from the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack (it's only 12 sec, so there was no time to skip), but also another one from that soundtrack: I heard Ramona Sing! Definitely didn't skip that one, I never skip Scott Pilgrim! I love that movie to bits, which is funny given that I don't enjoy comics, animated things or gaming (no shade, I obviously gave Asterix&Obelix and Tintin a try but it just doesn't work for me)
Je m’en fous - RIDSA (I only added that last week because I needed something run some anxiety off and this had a good tempo and what better lyrics for that mood haha thats why I'm keeping it)
Quatre murs et un toit - Bénabar
Sandy (Grease, John Travolta), and then also Look at me I’m Sandra Dee (oh the memories to a parisian suburb life with my obsessed roommate, we'd put this on loudspeaker and the speaker in between the two bathrooms our apartment had and get ready for work that way. It was days without worry and we did see the musical in the end)
Sick of loosing soulmates - dodie
Tri Martolod - sung by Nolwenn Leroy (I love the whole album so much)
There is an Answer - A Great Big World
I’m Stepping out - John Lennon
If you also want to share random music, I am tagging: @lilolilyr @anandabrat @ginnyjyng @lakeofsilverpike @wibblywobblyida @trollocks-in-my-bollocks @rinari7 @thatordinaryoddity @akittennameddaisy

Your notes on that gif set were so intriguing to me. I hope you don’t mind me screenshooting them.
It would be interesting to see if this is what the show chooses to explain why Verin and Alanna were paired up for their trip to the Two Rivers. In the books, they were looking for more girls who could channel but also using that as a cover for finding out more about the Ta’veren boys but now they know for sure that Rand is the dragon so that gives them less motivation. But if they’ve showed their hand too much to the other Aes Sedai they will probably be forced to flee and we know how isolated two rivers supposedly is, so it might be a good place to hide (and also scout for novices still, maybe). It also would explain why it was these particular two Aes Sedai to go to the Two Rivers.

@onaperduamedee To be fair, being 100% forthcoming 24/7 is not necessarily all that efficient or even healthy. Sometimes people deflect to keep things private in a world obsessed with claiming every single trait of individuality a person can possess.
Also I feel like the art of getting to know a person is all but lost. Social media has people putting out all sorts of otherwise private thoughts out into the world instantaneously and making it the norm. While being vocal and open is fine, some people just aren't like that, and it doesn't mean that they're lying or eViL - they might simply feel like some stuff is unsafe to share. Being private does not equal lying.
That post that's like "stop writing characters who talk like they're trying to get a good grade in therapy" really blew the door wide open for me about how common it's become for a character's emotional intelligence to not be taken into consideration when writing conflict. I remember the first time I went to therapy I had such a hard time even identifying what I was feeling, let alone had the language to explain it to someone else. Of course there are plenty of people who've never been to therapy a day in their life who are in tune to their emotions. But even they would have some trouble expressing themselves sometimes. You have to take into account there are plenty of people who are uncomfortable expressing themselves and people who think they're not allowed to feel certain ways. It also makes for more interesting conflict to have characters with different levels of understanding.
