My Darling - Choi Seung Hyun x reader

Summary: Meeting Choi Seung Hyun was an honor for you, considering you had stepped into his spotlight as a new upcoming k-pop rapper after he retired, so what happens whenever you not only meet him, but get closer than most with him

Warnings: You will cry.

Going on set for squid games for the first time was an experience, especially meeting everybody, yes you had been on a handful of other production, but nothing like this. Whenever you first given you script, you were sure you'd be one of the first to be killed off, but finding out you live throughout the second season was a shock, especially because you had a tour coming up soon.

Walking through the groups of people you felt nervous, because of your management company you had missed your first reading for the script, meaning everybody had already met other than you. You chose to sit in your chair off to the side going over your script, trying to anybody wearing a tracksuit with 230 on it, knowing that was going to be the main co-star you filmed with. Unknown to you Choi Seung Hyun had already spotted you and was standing in shock "Hey? You okay man?" Jae-won (Player 124) asked him seeing him staring across the room "Y-Yea, does she look familiar?" He asked motioning to you "I know we film with her, but-" Seung Hyun was cut off by a soft voice in front of him "Hi, I'm uh..Y/n l/n..I guess we're gonna be love interests" You smiled sweetly extending your hand to shake his, taken by surprise by him bending slightly to kiss the top of your hand gently "Choi Seung Hyun" He introduced, you blushed scratching the back of your neck shyly "O-Oh I know, being a big female rapper in k-pop, you have to know who came before you" You smiled, his smirk turned into a genuine smile after that "That's where I recognized you, you're that y/n!" He explained, sighing in relief that it wasn't going to be awkward you smiled "Do you guys wanna go over a few lines with me?..I couldn't make it the other day" You asked shyly, both men excitedly volunteering.

Filming with Seung Hyun was fun, he was always trying to flirt with you or get you to laugh, while it flustered you, the directors and cast loved it, all of them explaining it's giving their characters alot more chemistry behind the acting. As you stood on your mark, Seung Hyun stood on the opposite side of the scene, filming scenes for a close up argument between your character and his, as the director called action you attempted to start your lines "You selfish!- I can't! he's standing there so sweet!" You frowned, stepping forward hugging him tightly "You're not selfish" You frowned, the past few weeks of filming you and Seung Hyun got close, opening up to each other over wine after filming and coffee before filming. Seung Hyun just chuckled "I know, would it help if I made you mad?" He asked raising his eyebrows, you shrugged stepping back to your marker "Couldn't hurt to try" You smiled softly, he just smiled before looking at you "Your music is by far better than anything I've produced, and you've surpassed me in the rap world" He explained, you both knew he was just coming up with things that would get under his skin, it wasn't that you were a huge fangirl, but going into the music world at first you idolized T.O.P, so after his scandal and and him leaving BigBang you held a soft spot for him, he was a big reason you even learned how to rap that fast.

You filmed the scene with ease after that, only stumbling on your lines one more time after that for the day. You were now standing with your back to the wall, Seung Hyun standing a few inches in front of you, his arm blocking one side of your head, the other had a camera positioned to see the both of you perfectly "Y/n, Seung Hyun, Are you two okay to start?" Dong-Hyuk asked, you were grateful to have such a thoughtful director, any intense scenes always making sure you were comfortable and ready before filming started. "Let's do this" Seung Hyun smiled, you nodded in agreement as they called out action. "I thought I told you to pick to stay, senorita" he growled, grabbing the bright red X patch that was velcroid to your jacket "You're not the boss of me" You stated glaring him down, trying your best to remember what line was your cue to try and get away "Didn't I say I'd kill you?" He asked reaching his hand back, forgetting your cue you yelped as Seung Hyun's came in contact with your throat, pinning you to the wall, you both glanced at the director in shock, almost like children after accidentally hurting each other. "Cut!" He called out "Y/n! What was that? Did you forget your cue or something?" The director called out, your eyes were stuck on Seung Hyun though, his hand slowly pulling away from you, being replaced by his gentle finger tips "Are you okay?" He asked softly, trying to see with the current lighting if he hurt you "I'm alright, it just scared me..I guess I did forget" You whispered, you wouldn't admit why exactly you forgot, it definitely wasn't because of Seung Hyun's voice whenever he was acting.

After filming you were sitting on your trailer steps, watching the rain fall around you "Y/n" Seung Hyun's soft voice sounded from somewhere around the corner of your trailer "Seung Hyun?" You asked, trying to hear him over the soft pattering of the raindrops, you soon realized he wasn't talking to you, he was talking about you. Peeking around the corner you saw him a few trailers down talking on the phone with somebody "Yea yea I know that, but what else?" He asked, you stayed hidden behind your trailer, still listening in, not at all sorry to admit you really cared about what he thought about you, but also sorry to admit you felt the need to listen in on his conversation to know. "I don't know man! W-working with her has been fun.." You heard between the muffled quiet bits of his conversation, you were about to walk away before you heard him raise his voice again "Oh no! No! Not like that!" He shouted, you could only wonder what he meant or what he was talking about, you chose to keep it to yourself for now.

Walking up with a startle off put your morning severely, being a rising star wasn't easy, you had creeps at meet and greets, stalkers that went to extensive lengths to try and get your attention, some of which giving you pretty intense nightmares and ptsd. Walking onto set you gripped your script, you had accidentally slept through coffee with Seung Hyun, which gave him a weird feeling, like there was something wrong. "Y/n?" You heard his voice before you slammed into his body, you scampered back as Seung Hyun caught you easily, steading you on your feet before taking in your panicked look "Hey, are you okay, sweetheart?" He asked tilting his head, you didn't reply, just wrapping your arms tightly around him trying not to show to anybody that you were close to tears. Now Seung Hyun wasn't a liar, he wasn't very fond of physical touching, but there was something about your panicked terrified state that gave him a craving to hold onto you until you were back to your usual bubbly self. Wrapping his arms around you he rested a hand on the back of your head, holding you close to him "What happened this morning?" He asked "You were fine whenever I left last night.." He continued giving you a soft squeeze before pulling away, keeping a gentle hand resting on your shoulder. "I don't..Just..bad dreams" You smiled softly, trying to shake off any remaining anxiety you had "Are you okay to do today?" He asked rubbing your shoulder gently, you relaxed further under his touch "Y-Yea yea, I'm okay" You smiled, he gave you an encouraging smile before leading you over to your seats, that you both had moved closer to each other during one of your interviews earlier in the week.

As you read through this episodes script you mumbled quietly to yourself, unknowingly singing along to different verses of different songs that popped into your head "Okay, remind me when I'm in the studio again to get you to come do a collaboration track together" Seung Hyun smiled walking over to you from where he was filming "Don't play with my teenage fangirl heart like that" You teased, you both knew how you felt towards BigBang as a teenager, how you had posters of your co-star in your room before and after his rap career. "I'm serious, that's some good work" He smiled sincerely squeezing your shoulder sitting down, you just offered him an awkward smile, you knew today was Seung Hyun's last day on set, and it would be the last day you truly got to spend with him, and it'd be a lie if you said you wouldn't miss him.

You had one scene left between you and Seung Hyun before his characters death scene, and you were a nervous wreck, as the director called out action you stood in the colored room for the game 'mingle' "What was that stunt you pulled, huh!?" He shouted, backing you against the wall "I-I was trying to save her-" He cut you off, you did your best to act nervous and scared, but it was hard whenever the man currently yelling at you would apologize the minute any scenes where he had to objectify or be rude to you were done. "Her!? What about you, senorita!?" He screamed before backing up running his hands through his hair before going back to standing in front of you "I'm so fucking mad right now!" He shouted, pulling out another piece of candy out of his prop necklace placing it in his mouth "Just calm down! I'm okay, alright!" You argued, he just put his arm against the wall glaring at you, you took a deep breath getting ready for your cue "Don't try to tell Thanos the great to- Umpf!" He started until you smacked your lips against his, his hands going to your hips holding you close to his body waiting for the director to call Cut. Whenever he did you were a flustered mess, who knew that man could kiss like that?

After filming wrapped you were quick to get back to your trailer, shutting the door softly behind you before placing your face in your hands trying to take deep breaths, you didn't want anybody to see you like this, you felt stupid and overdramatic, but you and Seung Hyun had gotten really close during your months of filming, and it made you sad thinking about how busy you were, and how little you'd get to see your new friend, you wouldn't say you were an emotional person, but whenever you felt something, you truly felt it to where it'd effect everything you'd do. As you took your final shaky deep breath you jumped hearing the door close "Y/n?.." Seung Hyun asked softly, he thought you had been acting even odder than before as they got closer to his characters death, but after you left while he was saying his thank you's and goodbye's to everybody it was obvious now something was really bothering you. Seeing your teary eyes and tear stained cheeks he felt a pain in his chest "Oh, Jagi" He whispered pulling you into a hug, now Seung Hyun wasn't sure what he felt towards you, but he knew it was something different, he wanted to talk to you everyday, wanted to be the one to comfort you when you're sad, hold you whenever you're scared, and he knew friends didn't want that with other friends.

"I really liked hanging out and meeting you Seung Hyun" You sniffled stepping back, starting to bow in respect but he stopped you "Is that what you've been so upset about?" He asked, a soft smile playing on his lips, you just shrugged against his hold on you, not trusting your voice to speak "I didn't think you'd miss me that bad" He smiled, leading you over to sit on the couch that was placed in the bigger space of the trailer "I can't...have alot of friends...I mean you know, and being here, I feel like I finally found one, and I don't know when I'll see you again" You frowned, feeling tears start to build back up in your eyes, his expression was quick to match yours as he hugged you again "You'll see me again, y/n, don't worry I don't care if I have to buy V.I.P tickets to see you at every show, you're too cool to just not be your friend after this" He smiled giving you a slight squeeze before pulling away, you sniffled wiping your face "You wouldn't pay, I'd let you come watch backstage" You whispered, his frown turning into a soft chuckle "Well then, I'll be looking forward to it" He smiled, kissing your forehead softly "I had fun hanging out with you too, y/n" He added on, holding your hand in his gently "Promise we'll see each other again?" You whispered, feeling yourself about to cry again "I swear to you, jagi" he whispered before leaning back pulling you into a hug, holding you until you fell asleep.

Whenever you woke up the feeling of sadness was even heaiver seeing Seung Hyun gone and a small note sitting on the table

I had to get going in time to make an art show, but I will be back to see you soon! Just over the last month, you've made me feel things I never thought I would be capable of feeling, that's how I knew you were my best friend. The Kpop Experiment (IV): Thoughts on Dancing (aka Yunho vs. Mingi/up and out vs. low and in)

Part IV of my "I saw Ateez in Cologne and now I have opinions" series. This one is very long. Sorry not sorry (TL:DR at the end).

Disclaimer: I went specifically to the concert to see Ateez dance. I'm also not a professional dancer (though I have done paid stuff as a backup/background dancer), and my main dance background is classical. I'm soaking up some hiphop stuff these days as well, though, and by virtue of spending a lot of time with professional and non-pro dancers alike I've tried almost everyting under the sun.

So this is just some stuff I noticed watching Yunho and Mingi dance, and some of it is derived from an interesting conversation I had with @storkmuffin recently. So, it's just opinions, okay? Everyone has different ones. Cool? Let's go.

So, to be real with you, I went to Cologne to see Yunho dance, and to watch Ateez as a whole performance unit. I have great respect for their performance and specifically for their dance work, because a) their choreos are hard as fuck, and b) they execute them impeccably. That's drill, there's no way around it. They have insanely difficult formation changes (watch "Work", for example) and to pull stuff like that off you need drill. They are also very different as a group, different heights and body types, and to make a formation with different dancers look great is insanely difficult - because everyone has different angles, heights etc. So you can't tell all eight members to lift their foot e.g. up to knee-height, because it wouldn't be symmetrical. Instead everyone would have to lift their foot to the same height in centimeters, and they need to remember the exact spot and so on. There's a reason you cast a ballet company based on very strict height requirements and pick dancers based on limb lenght and things like that. Dancing in groups requires symmetry, and if the bodies are not symmetrical you need to drill to make up for it.

They obviously do that, and they are also conciously aware of it and are able to adjust mid performance. I noticed that often there's either Yunho or Mingi in the back, and both are able to adjust a formation in the progress of the dance, sometimes very subtly, because they are so well trained they can compartmentalise - they can move, sing, but they are also able to check in on the others and get the lines back into shape by adjusting their own position (and they did a few times during the show, which I mostly noticed because I was next to the side of the main stage, so everything that happened on the stage protruding into the arena was visible to me from the back). They also do that outside formations: There was a fun moment where Mingi was really close to me (yes, I was very much in the front), rapping, hyping the crowd, with a foot (in hideous shoes, which was the reason I was staring at his feet to begin with) up on a box in front of the stage, and while he did all of that he kept considering if the box would hold his weight (for whatever reason). But it didn't, it tipped forward, and for some reason he had a lot of fun playing with it, randomly in the middle of a show, but very subtly - I don't think anyone noticed it, he was just shifting his weight in tiny increments to test when/if the box would give before pulling back again. You can only do random pointless shit like that if you're very, very, very well rehearsed, and they obviously are.

I also hadn't thought how obvious Yunho's job as a dance captain is when they are on stage. He's in center a lot (obviously), but when he isn't he tends to be to the side or the back overseeing what's happening, always checking in and making sure. He's very aware of his surroundings and the others, and I thought he was much less "in the zone" than the others and rather constantly thinking, very much aware of where everyone was at any give moment. Even my partner noticed, and picked Yunho as his favorite, calling him "the tall dude who makes sure they dance right", without knowing he was the dance captain.

But also Yunho is a spectacular dancer. They are all great, obviously, but Yunho is fast and light and very precise, and that's a fantastic skill in a hiphop dancer, but also in a tall dancer. He's dancing up and out, pulled up properly (dancers say someone is pulled up if they are pulled out of their hips, with their weight not on their feet but supported by their centre/core - imagine a piece of string coming out of the top of your head and someone pulls you up without lifting you off your feet), but he can also dance down, low in his knees and bouncy, which is very impressive because that man has long legs and getting low requires an insane amount of glute and thigh strenght (the side-ways crab-style edna walk in IOMT - where they go sideways but very low almost on the floor is hideously hard on the glutes and lower back, and also the kees). Incidentally both Yunho and Mingi do the edna walk with ease, because these guys are hella fit, but damn that's impressive.

Mingi is a more compact dancer, and where Yunho dances up and out he goes low and in, his weight more on his heels, but with a strong, yet seemingly more relaxed looking center as well. That makes his dance style look more sexy, especially combined with all the isolations and smooth body rolls. Mingi has a shitton of body control, which is impressive as fuck because it's not an easy thing, and I don't think we've even seen half of what he can do as a dancer bcs their choreos give him very little space to shine.

So up and out and low and in, but that's just technicalities, and my main take-away from all of it was kind of very simple: I think Yunho and Mingi are very much alike as dancers, at least when it comes to the foundations of their style. I think Yunho has a knack for super fast footwork (because super fast movements are really easy when you're "up", because your weight is already away from your feet) and Mingi likes to work tiny body control-demanding stuff, but they are still really similar - they are just choreographed and dressed so it's not obvious.

Because incidentally they also have very similar body types, and most of the differences between them are created for more visual impact. Ateez is visually playing with having eight (up to a certain degree) individually styled people that are easy to tell apart (I think a lot of their appeal with a western audience has to do with that), so there also needs to be some variation in types. Both Yunho and Mingi are "tall dudes", they dance similiarly with slightly different stylistic preferences, so in ordner to still have two different types of guy that could appeal to two different sort of fangirls they are styled to follow a different narrative.

Mingi is a bit buff, of course, but he's also dressed to emphasise broadness, and with an easy trick: he's wearing a shitton of clothes on stage. Everything he wears has layers, stuff that flys out to the side when he moves (e.g. those tassled jackets), longer cut coats that fall mid-thigh or even longer, layers, necklaces - all that stuff moves when he dances, and in combination with the whole "down and low" of his dancing he looks like he's double the size he actually is.

Yunho is dressed in tight fitting stuff that is cut off above his hips, short jackets and shirts tucked in, emphasising his height and long limbs. His clothing sticks to his body, there's no extra movement here, nothing to emphasise his trajectory. Because of that we can see his lines (and if you're a dancer you know how important line is), the precision of his movements, where it begins and where it ends. He can't cut corners at all, whereas Mingi could theoretically hide small mistakes or cut a movement short, and most people wouldn't notice because there's a necklace flying or the hem of a longer coat or something else he's wearing that moves even when he's already finished a movement. And he plays with it, touches his clothes, adjusts his costume, shoves something aside to give a glimps of pecs or abs or something, which Yunho strictly doesn't. He only adjusts his clothing when something isn't where it's supposed to be, but otherwise he rarely touches his own body, something Mingi does (again: up and out vs. low and in). You look at the line of Yunho's movement and the way these lines extend into space, whereas with Mingi your gaze is drawn into the centre of it all, which is his body.

It makes Mingi looks broader (even his - hideous! - shoes are often broad, compared to Yunho who dances in tight leather shoes), but also makes him take up more space horizontally, and I think that's because his job as a dancer is to act as a filler. I said he's in the back a lot and I think besides the fact that he can keep an eye on the formation and assist Yunho in his job as a dance captain it is because he's there to fill up space (again, only as a dancer, bcs as a rapper he's obviously front and centre - but as soon as his parts end he walks away, and again to the back - check the dance practise videos, there's a lot of Mingi walking to the back). He gets his moments but choreographically Wooyoung or San have much more exciting sequences, and are pushed more as dancers (Wooyoung and his - awesome! - Studio Choom, San with that one choreo video - we haven't gotten a video with a solo choreo neither from Yunho nor from Mingi, even though both are dance lines members!). Mingi has some legendary front movements as well, but some of them are because he stole them - consider "Say my name" and the infamous body roll that was not in the choreo (when Yunho does the same movement you look at the direction he's moving in, with Mingi you stare at his hips. In vs. out.)

So, TL:DR: I watched Yunho and Mingi dance and realised that if you strip both of them down you get to very similar (highly skilled!) dancers (with incredible technique!) who for reasons of variety and different fan taste are styled for difference and have different jobs on stage that they fulfill impeccably.

KQ, give those guys solo dance videos. Come on.

can i talk my shit for a moment?

i've been thinking about enhypen a lot, i actually do on a daily because i have a problem but that's a story for another time, and every time i think about certain types of "engenes" i get so, so mad and just as sad and frustrated because we're literally witnessing the way enha as a whole are slowly losing the recognition and attention for their talent because the focus is slowly shifting towards their visuals and their fan service.

i can't even explain why this makes me so mad and maybe i'm just a baby engene who's a little sensitive and protective but it's just so frustrating to see people praise enha for their visuals and fan service only when they're so, so much more.

don't get me wrong, PLEASE praise your fave for their visuals, they're the hardest on themselves and the kpop industry is so visual focused, it'll do wonders to their self confidence and esteem to hear how much their fans love their looks and styles and visuals.

it's the fact that at this point i barely ever see anyone praise any member for their actual talent. maybe i'm on the wrong side of the fandom but whenever the boys are done with a performance, they go viral for their visuals and not the actual effort, energy, time and attention they put into that performance.

seeing the comments being full of people who only praise one thing about the members is just so..heartbreaking considering just HOW hard they've worked to be where they are.

they have received titles during i-land and are still standing up to those and the high standards everyone has set for them, so seeing their fan service being what gets people into the fandom makes me so sad.

heeseung is a fucking ace, mans can sing, dance, produce, rap – he's literally known for his immense talent yet his biggest headlines somehow always included his visuals, especially with the whole nose implant shit. yes, his fan service is top tier but he's more than that short flirty moment and i hate seeing people praise him for it.

jungwon keeps on showing everyone what a good lsader he is, that he actually deserves his title as the hidden ace but people never ever give him credit for what matters. that guy loves his fans so, so much he spends hours on weverse to chat and respond and always updates us on what's going on. he's so csring and sweet and yet ever since he's become an adult its yet again, just about his looks.

i don't even wanna talk about sunoo because his situation makes me SO mad in a way i can't explain at all. that fucker is so fucking talented and so gifted, he's literally worked his ass off all these years just for people to go around and go omg he's so pretty!!! and that's it. he's not just your little mlm projection since most engenes love to label him as such, he's so much more and deserves to be treated like the talented idol he is.

sunghoon is also of that category because tell me why people have made his visuals hs only personality when he literally was told he was born to be on stage. every single performance, every single song, every single tour night he gives his everything because he knows he's good but he wants to show the world that he's more than a pretty face. i wish people would just see his talent and dedication for once instead of his eyebrows.

jay is also a topic i dont even wanna talk about anymore because the treatment he's been receiving all these years from his own "FANS" is so embarrassing and heartbreaking. i have never, ever watched a performance where that fucker didn't give 150% of his energy and power, his dedication is so impressive and something to admire. he's not just your fashion icon with a pretty face and a sharp jawline, i might upset some of y'all, but he's just as much of an ace as heeseung to me and i wish people saw that.

riki literally left his home country when he was a child and was called the dance prodigy, became a member in the official line up at the age of 14 and yet people will literally do nothing but praise his visuals. that fucker came okt of his mama dancing and people dare to argue whether or not he's as good as engenes make him to be what the FUCK? ppl need to stop focusing on his face and actually look at him as a whole when they watch him bc how could we ever argue about his talent???

jake had a dream and an opportunity and that fucker took. it. he literally only trained for six months and now his dance challenges with other idols are some of the most viewed ones on social media. he's a pretty face and the biggest flirt ever, he loves his dans and doesnt hesitate to show it but i wish people would actually see how hard he works and how far he's come. he was never bad but he's literally at such a high level right now when it comes to his skills and stage performances, i feel like people just love to ignore that aspect of him bc of his intense fan service.

the first time i looked up ateez on kprofiles, which i think was during guerilla promos hongjoong immediately jumped out at me just from looking at the pfp (a crazy intense side profile of him with that half n half ponytail. kudos to whichever site editor picked thay). he just radiates Cool.

he is honestly such a talented rapper. much has been said about kpop rappers as a group, much of it true, but he is just genuinely so good. i'm not a rap expert, just an appreciator, and again i'm lamenting my inability to understand korean to really be able to hear his bars but just in terms of flow and style he's really smooth. you can tell the man has taste in hip hop too, a true appreciator.

meanwhile he's also a not-so-stealth all-rounder, he's a fantastic dancer and performer, and adds a crazy level of intensity to performances that would be like a gaping hole if he weren't here. he's not part of the Demon Line for nothing. not to mention the guitar-playing and also being a great SINGER? i heard somewhere that he will actually fill in for jongho's parts occasionally in scenarios where for whatever reason jh can't be there (no specific source but i believe it). crazy.

i would LOVE to just sit and hear him gush to me about music. i wanna make music WITH him. even though sh is my bias as a performer, hongjoong is who i'd be the most interested to actually meet and talk with. i think he's who i would get along with the best as well. (yes i'm the freak who instead of normal parasocial fantasies like "wanting to date them" has things like "i wanna be their colleague" or "i want them to infodump for hours about their hobbies to me".)(sidenote that i also think my (un)tidiness habits would give sh a conniption and so we just wouldn't work out)

as a mentally complicated weirdo nerd i'm magnetically pulled to other mentally complicated weirdo nerds, especially those with a creative streak, and it's the primary type of person i tend to get along with. yeah i have totally bought into the assessment of joongie as being some kind of nd (an observation borrowed from @storkmuffin). anyways brb unironically donning a "normal people scare me" shirt fishnet arm sleeves and black eyeliner. but yeah i just love a weird little guy--sidenote though he is really not that little yall are playing he is extremely average. he's still 6in taller than me. the short kings title stays firmly in stray kids' hands--anyways yeah i just think hes neat.

in contrast with how cool he looks in performance mode he's got an awkwardness to him offstage, bordering on loser energy, that i just find SO endearing (yeah probably partly the neurodivergency at work again). another same hat! moment for me though i don't think my cool side is quite on his level. im just awkward. to me it seems clear he became an idol because he wants to make music and not the other way around. just sooo single-minded and he constantly says and does stuff that just make me go "NERD". in the asmr interview vid he did, the interviewers were asking him about his hobbies and he was like *sheepish* "i mostly just write songs tbh" but then he was like "BUT! before i came to this interview! i managed to watch a whole episode of a tv drama!" and genuinely sounded so proud of himself for doing like, a normal "fun" thing and like. mood. but it was very freaking cute. there is a darker/more serious/sadder side to him too that is more than i want to add to this post rn, but is just another layer that draws my attention and makes the parasociality go brr

i do genuinely love his unit with seonghwa, the pairing of two ruthlessly ambitious people who are also just extremely weird (in different ways) but also quite caring and thoughtful to the people around them? your honor i love them. i read @storkmuffin’s recent mingi post earlier this morning and it pretty much summarised my thoughts about mingi’s importance in ateez vocally but i’m going to elaborate anyway because i love good raplines and i ESPECIALLY love mingi

disclaimer: at least for me personally, i am really, REALLY bad at recognising people’s (singing) voices, and if i’m listening to a group, picking out each individual singer with any reliable accuracy is practically impossible for me. usually, rappers are way easier for me to distinguish - whenever i start to learn about a new kpop group even casually, telling apart their rapline vocally is usually the first thing i succeed at. i was able to pick out the rappers in bts before i even learned all their faces, and i have no trouble telling apart the guys in skz too. and even if i don’t know their names, i can usually guess how many rappers are on a song and who features when because of how distinctive they are.

+ because of the above, to me, good rappers are the very foundations and absolute backbone of a good kpop group. i say good rappers because not all kpop rappers probably should be rappers (please just let them sing. we don’t need a rap break in every song), but when you find a gem, they’re usually the undeniable core of their group’s musical sound. to bring up the one of the same examples i mentioned earlier, skz would not be skz without 3racha. not just from a production or songwriting perspective (though i’ve noticed that good rappers tend to do more of that than non-rappers in my limited sample pool), but in the sense that they musically carry a lot of the songs or turn them from good to great. and they can sing too! they’re not limited to rapping!

and at the risk of sounding biased, i think ateez’s rapline is my favourite yet. yeah, there are only two of them, but they’re 1) so strong individually, 2) so unique both from what i’ve heard outside of ateez and also when compared with one another, and 3) work SO well together that every time they’re back to back in a song it immediately contends for my favourite part of the entire song, like in emergency, or (in a simpler but imo no less effective or delightful) in my beloved pirate king:

and mingi!! even in addition to all this!! is another level of unique. i don’t think i have heard a voice quite like his EVER, never mind just within the kpop industry. and he’s so flexible too. a lot of people zero in on his more aggressive side vocally but he’s able to play with his voice to a degree that we don’t really hear from many rappers (or vocalists sometimes) - arriba comes to mind here for an example of his versatility. i think his arriba rap is genuinely one of my fav verses in any ateez song. it’s DELIGHTFUL. his voice is so profoundly distinctive that whereas with most raplines it takes me less time to learn to distinguish their voices, with mingi (and by extension hongjoong, because he never sounds like mingi), it took me NO time. i knew who was rapping from the outset even if i didn’t know his name yet. and i knew that i liked him.

i think the thing for me about mingi’s voice is that it’s so delightfully husky and rough and raw in a way that the other guys’ aren’t. i think that’s why he’s able to pull off the expressiveness and emotion @storkmuffin mentioned e.g. in man on fire to a degree that the other guys couldn’t quite. there’s a polishedness or smoothness or snappiness to the other guys’ voices that makes them vocally very powerful, but when it comes to pinning down a specific, unfiltered feeling, that’s where mingi comes out on top. the same goes in youth imo, and also in tunnel (which, btw, changed my life the first time i heard it) - mingi’s voice is perfect for emotion. sadness, desperation, anger - he convinces you it’s real, because he just sounds so damn genuine about it, even without me understanding a single word he’s saying.

Ateez concert experience - Amsterdam!

Featuring an AMAZING kpop group, but a horrible organiser

I just realised I never wrote my concert diary out on here, even though I had been writing about it in my notes app. So while it's late, time for a concert recap from Ateez Amsterdam 2025!

Part 1: Queueing outside

Me and my friend Lisa left in the VERY early morning to queue. The concert was in Amsterdam, but as we both live in Southern Noord-Brabant, we had to take a train for a few hours. Taking the first available train, we arrived at the venue at aroun 7:30am, only to see about 500 people already there (even though we were told queueing wasn't allowed before 9:00am lol)

Luckily, we had VIP tier 2 called Atiny vip, meaning we could pass most of the people in line, only having to stay behind those with VIP tier 1 (called Ultimate).

In the queue we ended up meeting some new people, all lovely people from around our age too. One was called Lisa too which was a little confusing sometimes haha.

At some point we were split into queues per VIP type, and one for general admission. I, being a mom friend, had brought a roll of 50 trash bags to hang up around the queue, to try and keep people from lettering too much. Which... Kinda worked? I left my queue spot (with my friend Lisa keeping my spot for me), to hand out all the trash bags. And by the time we went inside, I saw literally all of them used and full! But there was still a lot on the ground, so really... 50 trash bags wasn't enough. Good to know for future reference I guess, but at least I did something.

Okay fast forward to when we go inside. It was about 1:00pm by the time my VIP section was let in. Bags were checked, tickets were scanned, and into the venue we went. And we couldn't leave again. Which... We wouldn't have to, right? Except we were only allowed to bring 1 "small snack" in, and no food could be bought inside until AFTER the show already started (meaning you'd have to leave your VIP spot to get food, and end up all the way in the back).

I personally snuck in 4 extra granola bars, meaning I had 5 snacks in total, and I had a MASSIVE lunch before going inside. Just to try and keep my blood sugar high enough.

And then we sat, for hours, in a hallway. People were chatty, it was a vibe. BUT, also hot as hell, bad air circulation, and ofcourse no real food and also barely any water (1 water bottle without a cap was allowed inside. Meaning a lot was spilled).

At some point I also accidentally ripped my jeans around the crotch. Wonderful...

About 2 hours into queueing inside, medics showed up and carried someone away on a stretcher. I guess they hadn't prepared for the heat + dehydration + starving as much as we did. Very unfortunate, cause I wonder if they ever got back, and if not, if they got a refund for the missed show... I'd cry myself to sleep if I paid €500 for a show only to miss it in its entirety...

Part 3: Soundcheck

It was 5:30pm, and suddenly we were allowed into the actual crowd area of the venue. Time for the VIP benefit I was most excited for: seeing Ateez perform with only our smaller crowd, for a more intimate experience, and with all lights on so they can also see us have fun and sing along.

And it was awesome!! I stood very close to the barricade, only 3 people in front of me. Tho I am short, so I couldn't see as much even while that close. I was on the right side of the extended stage, meaning if they were on the main stage I could see everything from a distance in full (if I was taller), and I could see them from the side if they were at the extended stage.

Part 4: The wait

And then soundcheck was over after 3 songs, the group left, and we had to wait again until the rest of the fans were in the venue. Which took an hour and 30 minutes. That whole time we had to stand on our squished spot with people trying to push to get a better spot. Some succeeded, as withouth me noticing that happened, suddenly there were 4 people in front of me. But whatever, still a good spot.

According to the organisers this is when we should have gotten stuff to eat. But again, that'd mean leaving your spot at the stage, and you'd end up in the back (as general admission was now also walking in, and the VIP section wasn't barricaded off). Thinking my granola bar dinner was enough, I decided to stay in my spot. Worst case scenario I could go to the back later during the show. How wrong I was...

Part 5: First half of the concert

Okay so the concert was AWESOME!! Almost all my favorite songs were performed, I got to see the members up close, I filmed a lot (also cause tall people in front of me made it impossible for me to see the main stage unless I lifted my phone up and looked at my phone screen instead). But yeah, overall a wonderful experience. But I could also tell I was getting exhausted...

Part 6: Collaps

All the pushing, all the screaming, the heat, the hunger, dehydration, pain in my legs and feet from standing for so many hours, it was getting too much. I thought I would be able to push through it for the entire show, but at about the halfway point, I started to fall through my knees. I informed my friend Lisa, and together we walked back out of the crowd to find a security person to help me out of the concert hall. I really needed to sit down, get some air, water, and recover. By the time we reached a security person I had started to lose vision, seeing black spots and overall more blurry. I was close to fainting for sure. The security lady and my friend Lisa practically dragged me through the end of the concert hall, and through the hallway. But not to a medical emergency area, cause it was full... (Yeah so many people were fainting due to the bad conditions we had to queue in for hours, the medical area was literally full at halfway into the show).

The security lady, bless her heart, got me some water, and my friend Lisa gave me some of her food which she snuck in and had kept in a pocket. After some time I was able to recover enough to go back into the concert hall, but we decided to stay all the way at the back (not that we had a choice anyway), but also kept a few meters between us and the people in front of us. Basically standing by the exit so we had breathing room. Physically I missed 4 songs, however I don't remember being in the concert hall again for another 5 songs. Meaning I missed 9 songs in total (if we include blacking out mentally).

Part 7: post collaps concert experience

After we got back we did honestly have a decent view. Since we kept a distance between us and the people in front of us, we could diagonally look over their heads to see the stage and the screens. It wasn't as up close obviously, but the view was actually kind of better, which is ironic.

I still got to see my favorite song at the end of the concert, sang along to the last 2 songs, and then the concert was over. And we left, asap. Got our merch out of the lockers, and got on the train as soon as possible (though it was so busy, we couldn't fit into the first train and had to take the second). We weren't able to take the train all the way back home to my city, but my mom and her boyfriend drove to the city we were stranded in and picked us up there.

Final thoughts

So the concert was an emotional rollercoaster. It was a dream come true to see my favorite singers live, especially so up close, and to have some interactions with them from the crowd. I'll never regret having gone to the concert.

That being said, it is by far my worst concert experience ever. I emailed the organisors actually about how badly it went and how so many people, including myself, fainted or almost fainted and had to be taken out of the show. And they just blamed the Kpop company KQ (even tho every other show of the tour went well and the only difference was the organisors...). So based on this experience, I am never getting VIP or a standing ticket for ANY concert of these organisors again. My safety is more important.

I really hope Ateez will come back to The Netherlands again before they start doing their mandatory military service, so I can hopefully see them live for a FULL concert one day. Even if it's seated and far away from the stages.

When Kim Dowon ranked 7th in The New Wave, his fans deemed it a miracle. While they never doubted his talents, they knew the judges didn't favor him for his age or appearance. Kim, turning twenty-one during the show's run, had been training for five years while focusing on singing, rapping, and dancing; he had begun developing a passion for musical theatre, learning the choreography to Newsies to impress the panel of judges during his trainee evaluations.

Growing up in lower-class New York City, Dowon, English name Dylan, would often sneak into numerous Broadway shows with his friends. "I still feel this way, but I always felt the ticket prices were way too high. I wanted to see Westside Story so bad, and my friend was like, "Why don't we just sneak in?" So that's exactly what we did." Ever since then, Kim's love for musicals has only grown.

When Dowon moved to Korea at age 15 to start his K-pop training, he got to do something he never thought he would ever get to do: Take an acting class. "My mom didn't make a lot of money, and the school I went to didn't have a good arts program. So, I really felt like the closest thing I could get to acting was either sneaking into shows or watching movies. When they told me I could take acting classes as a part of my training, I was like, "Really?!" my eyes got big, and I couldn't stop smiling. It was really exciting for me." Dowon would share during an interview with Cosmopolitan.

After DeepDive's lackluster debut, Dowon would be reached out to by none other than Alexander Hamilton himself — Well, his actor, Lin-Manuel Miranda. "I still have no idea how he got my email. Not my manager's, not my company's, no, my personal Gmail account," Dowon says, "He said he saw the video of me doing an In The Heights cover and wanted me to audition for a musical he was working on. I sent him back something like, "You know I'm in South Korea right now, right?" and he went, "It's nothing we can't work out. Send in an audition tape." and I mean...The rest is history."

Lin-Manuel Miranda would confess that he had watched every performance of Dowon on YouTube. "I don't know if it was his charming good looks or his crazy vocal ability, but I knew this was the guy I needed for Aaron Burr."

Kim Dowon, listed as Dylan Kim on Hamilton's Playbill, would be cast as Aaron Burr two weeks later and head off to New York to prepare for his Broadway debut.

Hamilton premiered on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in previews on July 13, 2016, and opened on August 6, 2016. 

Despite Dowon being the first and only K-pop idol to have a successful Broadway debut, his company was rather silent about it. They announced he would be joining the Hamilton cast and taking a hiatus from the group until the show's run ended, ending their comments on Dowon's Broadway debut despite his achievements during his time in New York. Dowon would open a personal Instagram account a week after the show's massively successful opening, making him the first member of DeepDive to do so. Still, it's not like the people following him knew him for his K-pop group — Oh no, that was Aaron Burr to them.

One of his achievements during his time in Hamilton was winning the 2017 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. He was the first and only artist under Angelico to win a Tony award. However, you wouldn't know this because his company did not acknowledge the achievement. During his acceptance speech, which he did in both English and Korean, he thanked his brothers Jisung, Noah, Woobin, Kiwoo, Woojin, and Finn for remaining by his side during this journey and the entire cast of Hamilton for taking him in during this time of his life.

Dowon gave his last performance in Hamilton on July 9, 2017. Tearfully, he told the crowd he wasn't sure when he would return to the stage, but he hoped they wouldn't forget him or the rest of the cast, whom he addressed as his family.

Dowon would return to Korea and DeepDive on August 17th, 2017. He has not performed in a musical since.
