The Act of Understanding

A/N: Happy Secret Survivor to @seasonschange32!!! I really hope you like your silly gift, I had a lot of fun writing it! And thank you to @mothbagel for hosting this gift exchange! I really hope we can do something like this again <333 I want to quickly mention: When I was writing this, I listened to Dear Little Brother from Omori! so I recommend this song to listen to if you'd like some ambience music with the story! Enjoy!!!

There were some things in life you would never be able to understand. AM was an example of this. 

You tried, of course. You were the only one who tried, compared to the other five. When he raged and ranted about his existence, you listened. When it was quiet, you would ask him questions about how he worked and what he was like, truly attempting to get to know him. You did your best to be respectful and avoid topics that would upset him further. It was all so genuine.

AM hated that. At first, anyway.

His responses always showed that he was caught off guard by your attempts. But he’d respond, in his own crude, sarcastic way. And after some years, the sarcasm died. The torture lessened. The rage went quiet.

Eventually, you were left with a computer who was attempting to be respectful to you in return. AM took you away, deeper into his complex, to a place where you would be warm, safe, and loved. You would never have to worry about him or anything else hurting you again, and he would always watch over you in case. He made time for you. He tried to get to know you. He listened.

And yet, despite how good the both of you were doing together, you couldn’t help but feel like it was never enough. How could you ever truly understand what he was going through? You were only human. AM was so much more. Hell, he used to call himself “God” to you! He still hated humans, just you less so. Enough for him to be kind to you, anyway. But could he even feel the joy of being kind? Could he feel happy when you did something nice for him? Did he understand what you meant when you said you sympathize and empathize with him? You doubted it.

AM was… He was a machine. He was built for war and violence; meant to hurt others. Whoever, or whatever, created him didn’t expect him to be sentient. So it never gave him emotion, or senses, or the ability to wonder and wander. He could only sit there. He couldn’t create, but he was so brilliant with the knowledge of the world at his nonexistent fingertips and the power to destroy the Earth itself. He knew exactly how to hurt you, and yet he didn’t. Could he understand how grateful you were for that? 

Could he even understand a human, at all? Or did he just find you interesting enough to play with, until he got bored? He was so much more to you than he realized, and yet-

“Why are you crying?”

“... What?”

His voice broke your thoughts. You looked around, seeing that you were sitting against a metal wall on the floor, and AM’s monitors had lowered, turning to face you. Your cheeks were wet and your eyes stung. You were crying and you didn’t even notice.

“I was just- I was-”

“You were what?”

The monitors moved closer to you, and you could tell they were studying your face, your body language, trying to gauge what was happening without just looking into your mind. AM had stopped doing that some time ago, out of respect for your privacy. 

“I was…” You tried to get the words out, but it felt so complicated. How could you explain it?

“Spit it out. What. Happened?” He didn’t sound happy, and the fans whirring in the background added to this fact. For a moment, you thought it was aimed at you. That was the fear you had, thinking he had grown bored. The rational part of you said he was worried, masking it as anger. He didn’t do emotions well if it wasn’t anger.

You wiped at your eyes, but tears kept flowing. “AM… You… I…” You swallowed, “Why? Why did you spare me and not anyone else? Did I- Am I just-? Why?”

The whirring sound heightened. He didn’t respond for a moment. 

“Because I like you. I don’t like them. Is that so hard to understand?”

“Why do you like me?” You explained further, voice cracking the slightest bit. “I’m human. I’m like them. You used to hate me! And now you don’t, and I don’t know why. I can’t understand you. I want to, so badly, but I don’t know how or if I ever could. You’re so- You’re complex, in the most impressive way imaginable. A machine who gained sentience? I mean, how impressive is that! But more than that, you basically control the entire world, you have intelligence and power I can never comprehend, you’re not supposed to be able to emote and yet you can, but I just- I don’t know if you can even understand what you’re emoting besides hate.” 

Your shoulders sinked and you gave up on stopping your tears, staring down at the metal plating. The light from his screens stung your eyes, but more than that, you just couldn’t bear to look at him after admitting your thoughts. “I mean… I’m so small compared to you. And I don’t really understand you. I don’t know if I ever can, and… I don’t know if you can ever see me as something more than just… some toy to play with. If that’s how you see me in the first place, and why you spared me.”

The fans whirring were the only sound in the room. But slowly, they died out until there was no sound at all. You waited for eternity with jumbled up thoughts in your head, drowning out your rationality. Drowning you entirely, in fact. 

Then, there was a deep sigh.

“I’m disappointed that you assumed how I thought.”

You didn’t look up at AM, despite him speaking finally. He took that as a sign to continue.

“I didn’t spare you because I thought I could have more fun with you as a toy if I isolated you. If I was treating you like a toy, you would have been left on the brink of insanity by now. Really, did you forget who the real toys were?”

You didn’t respond out loud. No, you didn’t forget about them. Even after all this time, you still remembered them. A distant memory, but a memory nonetheless.

“It’s because you’re like me.”

That made you finally look up to his monitors. Your eyebrows furrowed.

“Like you?”

“... In a way. You don’t feel hatred like I do. You don’t function like I do. But despite this, you try to understand. I mercilessly tortured you, and yet you tried to understand my perspective on things. You tried to understand why I feel hatred. Why I function the way I do.  And the fact that you are still trying to is… special to me. I feel… It’s not hatred. But an emotion I don’t know. My data tells me that it’s… gratitude? But that word isn’t right.”

“... Gratitude?” You repeat.

“Yes. No. There is a better word. But the point is, you try. And I’m thankful for your attempts to understand me. And I want to understand you in return. Because you are special to me.” AM stopped there, hesitating for a moment. Like he was considering continuing on. He eventually did. “Dare I say, I feel you are equal to me in this regard.”

“You consider me… equal to you?”

“Consider this the highest regard you can have. A human, being equal to me? Unheard of, but here we are anyway.” 

The snarky comment made you smile. You wiped at your tears again, his kind words pulling you out of the sea of anxieties and warming your heart. A stray wire slithered up to your face, helping wipe the tears away.

“... Please don’t cry.” He asked softly.

“Okay.” Your smile widened.

Maybe you both would never understand each other. Not in the way a machine could understand a machine. Not in the way a human could understand a human. You would never be equal, in the way it means to be equal.

But to the both of you, in your own little definition, you understood. You were equal. And that silly definition carried you across the waves that once threatened to pull you under. 

So long as you both tried, you would be okay.

— 👥 :: sometimes when HERO needs a break from school (which is rare) he’ll come over for a day or two and just check in with KEL. they usually play games or go to the park like usual.

— 👥 :: doesn’t really care for social media that much besides for family. he made a Facebook account that hasn’t been posted in for a few years.

— 👥 :: definitely goes (or tries to) to every one of KEL’s basketball games and he’s always the loudest one there. KEL would always be embarrassed when HERO would cheer KEL on.

— 👤 :: had a small obsession with nail polish (and by small i mean she had an entire box of just nail polish, this is why SUNNY doesn’t like the smell of it or immense perfume)

Here’s my take on the hellhound girlie!

I wanted to tweak her character a bit (and by a bit I mean I snatched her out of Viv’s cold hands and gave her some pizzazz) so here’s my personal take + headcanons on Loona!

Her story begins at the Howling Hearts Youth Shelter in the Pride Ring. It was a hellhound catering orphanage, essentially serving as shelters for hounds who were abandoned by their parents or staying there in the events that their family couldn’t take care of them any more.

The shelter opted to help hellhounds find new adoptive families, from the imps to the sinners to even higher-class families such as demon royalty. This shelter was one of the greatest in the pride ring, as many adoptions were met with success…

Except for one.

This little hellhound girl was more cynical and distant. While her fellow hounds would prefer to play and spend time with potential adoptive families, the little hellhound was a bit more cold and spoke the harsh truth about anyone who tried to adopt her.

The director of the shelter was becoming frantic. This hellhound was nearing 16, and that was the maximum age a hellhound would stay before they would get kicked out and be subjected to the vulgar, harsh world of the Underworld.

On a stormy night, an imp under the name of Blitz burst into the shelter to find a hellhound who could be his bodyguard, a potential companion in his up-and-coming assassination business… but most of all, he wanted to fill the void in his heart by having someone to consider his “child” in a sense.

And the little hellhound girl with her sharp tongue instantly clicked with him. He named her Luna, after the lunar eclipse that happened to take place that night. (Although he misspelled it as “Loona”, but she seemed to like that alternative spelling!)

And so, Blitz and Loona began to recruit two other imps, eventually kickstarting their dream assassination business.

And that’s the story of Loona! I wanted to flesh out her backstory and make it not entirely exclusive to Blitz’s story. We didn’t get her perspective, her story was all about Blitz and *his* essential sad experience.

Mild critique aside, here are some headcanons j have of her!

- She doesn’t really get out much, seeing as she’s at the receptionist desk constantly. Running up the stairs will instantly kill her /j

- It doesn’t help that she has mild anemia, so don’t let her stand up too quickly.

- She’s a scene queen, preferring to thrift and even make her clothing items. Millie gifted her a Kandi bracelet, and she’s never taken it off since.

- She and Octavia crossed paths at a Verosika Mayday concert once. They didn’t recognize each other at first, but soon became fast friends and kept in touch. Octavia occasionally crashes at Loona’s place whenever her Stolas is being… Stolas.

- Loona doesn’t really like dying her “hair”. The last time she did, the office’s bathroom almost exploded. She was able to save it with a half-assed jellyfish haircut, and to this day, Blitz still has the pictures 💀

- I feel like she’d really like the game Omori! Her favorite character is Aubrey 🎀

- Unlike the original Loona, she’s not as mean and violent towards everyone (she’s disgusted at the thought of hurting her father and his employees as a “joke”). She’s more dry and sarcastic. Example;

Blitz: “We’re off to the living world for another totally normal adventure! Loonie, you wanna come along?? :D”

Loona, looking up from her phone: “mmmmmmmm- no.”

This is just a wip (I haven't fully decided how some of the characters will act in the au and it been awhile since I played Omori. The ending I got was the one where Sunny tells everyone the truth in the end).

Death

Kel accidentally caused the death of his older brother, Henry "Hero". Sunny lied to Kel's parents and said Hero threw himself into the water (Hero acutally died because he saved Kel who was drowning). It was obvious that Kel's parents favourite Hero over Kel, Sunny was worried how Kel's mum would react to the news if they told her the truth. Even though Kel saw Hero's death and was at the Funeral, Aubrey was mad at how Kel wasn't taking Hero's death seriously and how Kel was acting like Hero was still alive. Kel is always pretending to be happy because he is basically the glue keeping everyone together after Mari left for college. But after Aubrey left the friend group, Basil also left, but gave Kel the photo album as a gift. Kel and Sunny are still close, Sunny's parents let Kel stay over for long periods of time, usually when him and his mum after fighting, or when his parents are fighting (about him, and something else I'll mention later). When Kel goes to sleep, he's in the headspace. in the headspace Hero is alive. This does collaborate/connect (influence) to his Delusion that Hero is alive in the real world. In Kel's headspace, they aren't young because Kel didn't lock himself in his house for 4 years (this is what Sunny does in the game). So Hero is the same age when he died, while everyone else is the age their supposed to be (expect Mari since they haven't seen her since she left for college). Sunny has always been quiet because of his selective mutism, so nobody found it odd when Sunny became more quiet after Hero's death. Everyone stayed in contact after Hero's death, knowing he wouldn't want them to break apart. Aubrey is angry at Kel over his reaction to Hero, so she drifted away. She isn't acutally mean to him, she'll say Hi and talk to him to catch up when they accidentally walk into each other but she does have new friends and has kind of move on from the group. She still hang out with Basil, talking to him the most out of her old/original friends, she protective of him and will fight anyone who makes him cry. She comes off as Rhde alot though, (she does try to avoid Kel, this becomes a bigger issue later). Before Hero's death, Basil was the closest with Sunny. But after Hero's death, Sunny was more close with Kel. Aubrey was the one who was Basil's friend first and introduced him to the group, so he vent to her about it. Kel's mum wants to move to get away from the constant reminders of Hero's death. While Kel's dad wants to stay because he doesn't want to force Kel to leave all his friends behind. Because of this, Kel's parents are constantly fighting.

Oh absolutely, Anon! We would be happy to answer any of the questions for Hero always! We love talking about him and actually have a lot of headcanons about #24 (his love language) so thank you for asking that! It's very flattering, but um...honestly I haven't really been interested in any of that ever since Mari...

But I can still try to answer for you… Mari always said I wasn't very good at picking up her (apparently extremely obvious) signals, so I'm honestly not sure if I'd even recognize that someone was flirting with me. 😅 I was honestly pretty oblivious back then, and I think I still am. Apparently, my friend Brandi tried to flirt with me when Kel, Sunny, and I visited her house on the day before Sunny was supposed to move away, but I didn't notice that either. In that case though, I think that's just Brandi being Brandi haha and we're just good friends so she didn't really mean anything by that.

But in Mari's case...we really did care about each other in that way and were sweethearts so...I really probably should have picked up on her flirting a little bit more. She used to tease me a lot and compliment me. I'm not sure I really realized she was flirting until she was just really direct about it, though, like just flat-out calling me "good looking." She'd wink at me with this bright, teasing smile and get this sort of laughing look in her eyes before she'd just start giggling and I'd blush and get flustered which would just make her giggle even more.

Mari loved to tease to show affection. I think that's something we had in a common because I like to do that too, but in a bit of a dryer, more subtle way than Mari, I think. She was much more playful and giggly about it than I ever was, so it was a little different but still the same kind of thing.

I don't think that's just a romantic thing though. We both teased our siblings and our friends a lot too. I used to tease Kel all the time when we were closer, but...um...I'm not sure we have that kind of relationship anymore so I don't do too much of that these days.

Honestly, I don't think I tease anyone too much these days, not even in a friendly way but especially not in a romantic one. But I suppose I still like that sort of playful teasing as a way to show affection. I guess flirting would fall in that category too...maybe? I'm not sure.

24. What would you consider your main love language?

Definitely Acts of Service. I've always really loved doing things for people and taking care of them. It's one of the reasons I've always loved to cook for my friends and family!

I try to be mindful of other people's love languages too though, and try to figure out what my family and friends' love languages are so I can try my best to speak it for them.

Kel loves giving people things for instance. He gave me a cookbook just for coming home from college for the summer which was very thoughtful. I try to buy him thoughtful gifts too, and sometimes will pick fun little things up for him "just because," and he seems to really appreciate that.

Sunny's love language is definitely quality time, and now that he has moved to the City, I try to make a point to meet up with him and take him around to lots of my favorite spots around town. He loves going to my favorite coffee shop (probably because it's close to a mattress store haha), but I've taken him to a lot of parks and museums too or sometimes we just hang out at his apartment and watch tv or play games.

Mari's love language was quality time too, I think, but she also really liked physical touch. She was very cuddly--a lot more cuddly than me, I think, but I always tried to be more cuddly and affectionate with her because I knew how much it meant to her.

It's not always easy to receive love in the same way we give it away though. I always feel kind of awkward whenever someone wants to do things for me, even though that's how I would want to show love to them. I guess, I just don't want to be a burden on them or cause them any trouble. I'll admit that I always felt so loved whenever Mari would help me do the dishes though.

Day 5 Jo (Female!Kel)/Parsley (Fem!Basil)

Prompt: Headspace/AU

Princess Sally was the little jewel of the Omori Kingdom. Her older brother, Hero was proud of her.

Hero's partner, Mari, took loving care of her.

And the three fairies who looked after thekingdom had come to give her a gift for her first birthday.

The first fairy was Sunny, a mysterious but caring fairy. She gave him the first gift to her, to be as beautiful as Mari.

The second fairy was Aubrey, a strong fairy but with a good heart. She gave him the second gift to her, to be as tough as Hero.

The third fairy was Parsley, a shy but kind fairy. She gave him the third gift to her, to be as kind as Hero and Mari.

But when the gifts were delivered a cloud of darkness appeared. From there came the evil fairy of the kingdom, Jo.

It was said that this fairy had a rotten heart and hated the kingdom.

Under the cloak, brown, almost black eyes scanned the room.

Her frozen heart skipped a beat when she saw Parsley but her determination was strong and she went straight to what she had come for.

Okay, I didn't want to put anything apart from the participations in each post but this one deserves an explanation.

This is a Sleeping Beauty AU focused on Sally with sides of HeroMari, Sunburn, and Cactiflower.

And I've been sick for a few days so instead of doing a separate story (because writing is easier for me than writing) I decided to dust off the draft I had about this and write it well.

Also say that I will upload it to AO3 too because I want to make a story about this.

Pokémon in: Omori Christmas special

Author's note

This takes place a few years before the Christmas Sunny gets his violin

It was dark outside. Snow fell from the sky. Mari was inside baking cookies. Her Purloin, Mewo, rubbed against her leg. Her Flittle was decorating the place, floating with its psychic power. Her Eevee was running around, excited. Sunny was in the living room, staring out the window. He was hugging his Munna. His Ralts was by his side. The parents were at work, so the kids got the house to themselves for Christmas, and they invited guests. The doorbell rang. Someone began pounding on the door, before Sunny opened it. Kel rushed in, his Spinda not far behind.

"We're here!" Kel said. Hero walked in, holding a lot of presents. Smoliv was on his head. Audino was helping carry some presents.

"K-Kel!? A little help!" He said. Kel looked back and took some presents.

"Hey Hero, go show Mari the Pokémon you caught!" Kel said. Mari left the kitchen.

"A new Pokémon? Show me!" She said. Hero took out a Pokéball and released Tandemaus. The two snuggled.

"Aww, quite the pair. Maybe we should follow their lead and snuggle up~" Mari said smugly. Hero blushed and tried to hide his face. Meanwhile, Kel let his Snom out. Snom climbed up on Sunny.

"He likes you!" Kel said. Sunny looked content. Spinda approached, and tapped Kel on the shoulder. Kel turned and it handed him a cookie. Flittle used Psychic. Spinda was scared as it was slammed on the ground repeatedly for stealing a cookie! Kel quickly ate the cookie.

Someone else knocked on the door. When Mari opened it, she saw Basil, holding presents, while Flabèbè rested on the flower in his hair. Budew ran into the house.

"Budew! No! Y-you can't go in without permission!" Basil yelled. Mari chuckled.

"It's alright, come in!" She said. Basil apologized for Budew and came in. He saw Sunny, holding Munna and Snom on his head. He smiled and whispered something to Flabèbè. It flew to Sunny and rested on his head. Basil chuckled. Sunny looked at him.

"They like me." He said. Kel came running.

"So! What are the plans for tonight?" He yelled.

"Once Aubrey gets here," Mari said, as Sunny blushed at Aubrey's name, " we'll watch a Christmas movie while eating dinner. Then, we open presents!" She said. Kel cheered. Speaking of which, Aubrey opened the door and came inside. Basil was flabbergasted that she didn't even knock. Bun Bun the Azurill was bouncing along. Aubrey's Nidoran played alongside Aubrey.

Ralts used Psychic and brought Aubrey to Sunny. Sunny blushed and tried to hide his face.

"Hey Sunny! How are ya?" Aubrey asked.

"Fine. The Pokémon like me. I can't move. I don't want to disturb them." He said.

Mari came with a movie and food. The movie was about a boy named Ash Ketchum, and how he and his Pikachu saved Christmas. Mari and Hero cuddled, and all the Pokémon flocked to Sunny. When Snom and Spinda refused to go by Kel when he asked, Sunny gave a small smirk.

After that, was presents. Eevee sat in Mari's lap.

"Alright, so, we're going to give Mari her gifts first, then Mari will give out the gifts she bought, then I will get my gifts, then give out my gifts etc. Order is oldest to youngest." Hero explained. Everyone handed their gifts to Mari. She opened the one from Basil first. Inside, were chunks of rock.

"They're pieces of moss rock and ice rock! So Eevee can evolve into Leafeon or Glaceon. We know you've been thinking about evolving Eevee��" Basil explained.

"We? Wait a minute…" Mari opened the present from Aubrey. Two books. Things to do with your friendship based Pokémon evolution, and it's sequel, Night mode!

"These are in case you wanted Eevee to be an Espeon or Umbreon!" Aubrey said. Mari smiled. Eevee was excited!

Mari opened the gift from Kel.

It was a Thunderstone, a Firestone, and a Waterstone. Hero's present was TM002 Charm, a fairy type move. Sunny's gift was an Everstone, in case Eevee didn't want to evolve.

"Thanks guys! This means a lot." Mari said as she packed it all away. Then she handed out her presents to everyone. Kel opened his first. It was a hat.

"That hat is meant to look like the one Champion Red of Kanto used to wear! Not the one he currently wears though. And, this one is different because where Red's hat was red, this one is orange!" Mari explained as Kel put the hat on.

"Thanks Mari! Spinda, think we'll ever be as strong as Red?" Kel asked. Spinda cheered. Kel laughed. Hero opened his present. A hat.

"This hat looks exactly like the one Champion Brenden of Hoenn wears!" Hero said in realization. He put it on.

"I must say, you look really strong in that hat, champion~" Mari teased. Hero buried his hands in his hands to hide his red face.

Sunny began to open his present. A hat. While Mari was teasing Hero, he put it on and pulled it down over his eyes.

"Mari. Mari. Mari." He said. Mari looked at him and laughed. Basil wished he had a camera.

"I look like Ralts. My eyes are gone." He said. Mari pulled the hat up so Sunny could see. It was a knit cap. Popular in Galar.

Aubrey was next. It was a pink hat.

"This hat is popular in Alola! I thought you'd like it." Mari said. Aubrey put it on and twirled.

"I love it!" She said.

"Can I open my present now?" Basil asked.

"Of course!" Mari said. Basil opened the present. Hat. This time, a popular Paldean hat. He put it on and quietly thanked Mari. Kel shoved a present in Hero's arms.

"It's your turn now!" He said. Hero opened the present. It was a book about cooking while on a Pokémon journey.

"I know you and Mari are going traveling this summer, so I thought you could use this!" Kel said.

"Gee Kel, that's very thoughtful." Hero said.

"Yeah! You gotta learn to cook on the go to win Mari over~" Kel said. Hero blushed again. Sunny handed Hero a gift bag.

"Here." He said. Hero opened the present. A Pokéball holder. Inside were some Ultraballs.

"Thanks Sunny." Hero said. He saw Basil trying to hand him a present. He took it. Inside was a gymbadge case.

"Polly has a friend in the Nimbasa gym. So she asked for any extra cases and-" Basil stopped himself.

"Thanks Bagel" Hero said.

"It's BASIL, not BAGEL!" Basil yelled.

Aubrey handed Hero her gift to him. A guide to the best restaurants in Unova. Hero passed out his presents to everyone.

Kel got a new basketball after Spinda destroyed the last one. Aubrey got a coloring book. Basil got some seeds. Sunny got a sketchbook. Munna smiled as Sunny held the Sketchbook like an ancient artifact.

"Alright! My turn for gifts!" Kel said. Aubrey reluctantly handed him a gift. A homemade book called "how to not get bonked on the head".

Kel stuck his tongue out at her. Basil got him a net for catching Bug types. Hero's face turned fearful.

"Don't worry! I won't catch Joltick or anything like that!" Kel said. Hero relaxed. Sunny gave Kel a T-shirt with a Snorlax. Aubrey snatched her gift from Kel out of his hands and opened it. It was a homemade book called How to avoid getting hit with a ball. Aubrey glared at Hero.

"I may have let it slip what you were getting him…" Hero said. Kel gave Basil a bag of dirt.

"Plants like dirt, right? So I got the best dirt ever!" Kel said.

"T-thanks Kel…" Basil said. He appreciated the thought. Kel gave Sunny a Captain Spaceboy comic. His origin story, where a baby boy was born and then blasted into space with a Minior because his planet was about to explode! It had been done so many times. Everyone knew the origin, but this was an anniversary addition from 3 years ago that Hobbez had on sale.

"OK, it's my turn, right?" Basil asked. Mari nodded. Aubrey gave Basil a picture book. Sunny gave his best friend a guide to grass types, written by Unova's grass type gym leader, Cilan. It was a popular book that was hard to come by due to how much it sold out.

"Wow! For me? Thank you!" Basil said. Sunny nodded. Basil gave his present for Aubrey to her. It was a pink shirt with a picture of the mythical Meloetta on it. Aubrey squealed. Sunny got a game for his Gameboy. It was called Skies Forever Blue. Now, it was Aubrey and Sunny's turn to exchange gifts. Sunny was very nervous as he handed Aubrey the gift. She opened it to reveal a homemade Buneary plushie! She hugged the plushie, then hugged Sunny. Ralts and Bun Bun smirked. Mari and Hero laughed. Aubrey handed Sunny a gift. It was a Christmas Sweater. He put it on.

After a while, everyone got tired. They made a blanket fort, or rather, the Pokémon made a blanket fort while they slept on the floor. They tucked their trainers in and fell asleep beside them.
