The Virtuous Omega Disguised as the Vicious Colonel by Little Baldy -- a brief review (no spoilers)
Novel length: 101 chapters + 3 extras
My Rating: ★★★★★ / 5
I have recently finished my second read through of this novel and I have to say that it holds up! There were many things that were hinted at and set up ahead of time that went right over my head on a first reading that I caught on this second read.
I also really appreciate that while this is an ABO story the omega character is not paired / marked against his will and while there is some teasing from his partner for things to become intimate he does take a step back and say they can stop if the omega wants to.
Check for content warnings under the cut.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What kind of story is The Virtuous Omega Disguised as the Vicious Colonel?
VODVC manages to strike a balance between a suspenseful thriller and a cheesy romcom. There are moments in the novel where you have to suspend your disbelief but they often lead to moments that incorporate cheesy tropes that you would expect from fanfiction. So if you're looking for something more gritty and serious this may not be for you. I very much enjoyed the cheesy tropes and found them a nice little break from the tension.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The setting is both interstellar and omegaverse. (Interstellar; a futuristic sci-fi with space travel and some more advanced technologies such as mecha. Omegaverse; people have evolved into having a secondary sex designation -- depending on the interpretation there may be female alphas who can inpregnate others and male omegas who can carry pregnancies). This novel also has transmigration as a topic though there is no system in place like you see in EPWCM or SVSSS.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is also a lot of secret identity shenanigans going on which is always something I enjoy. Part of why this is a central part of the novel is due to one of the alien species having an ability that lets them possess a humans' body so there are several moments throughout the story where characters are scrutinized in order to discern if something isn't quite *right* about them.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Who are the main characters?
Without going into details here's a little bit about our main squad:
Lan Yu aka Colonel K - The main character. Lan Yu is a transmigrator. In his home he was an omega actor who had just won an award when suddenly a storm caused him to transmigrate. He finds himself in the body of "Colonel K" who is known to be ruthless, reckless, and generally hard to get along with. As such, K has made many enemies. Lan Yu does his best to keep up the arrogant facade of this vicious colonel while internally he curses the original owner of the body (referred to as "The original Colonel K".) The body he inhabits is also an omega who has disguised himself as an alpha in order to serve in the army.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Colonel Lu RanKong - The love interest. Lu RanKong is a playful and friendly alpha and colonel who has often butted heads with K in the past. He takes his job seriously though he is more than happy to gloat when he is admired by reporters and civilians alike. He and Lan Yu are partnered together on sevel missions thoughout the novel and as they get to know each other slowly the bickering becomes less antagonistic and more flirtacious. He also has some secrets about his past that are unraveled as the story evolves.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are many characters who show up for one or two missions but don't really get the same limelight or development. I don't want to spoil things so I won't draw attention to the minor characters who *are* relevant to the final mission.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Luo Yan - a character that shows up about 80% of the way though the novel. He is however very important as he is one of the aliens that can possess a human. Though him we learn a great deal about the aliens.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The original Colonel K" - a character that haunts the narrative. Their previous actions and choices shaped the path that Lan Yu has to walk on. Lan Yu also wonders what happened to them, if they died and that's how he came to be in their body? There are a lot of mysteries surrounding this character and as the story progresses they are slowly revealed.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is the plot of The Virtuous Omega Disguised as the Vicious Colonel?
The plot centers around Lu RanKong and Lan Yu's relationship, the missions they are assigned, and unraveling the secrets that surround "the original Colonel K". I really feel like each mission in the novel actively works towards worldbuilding, fleshing out the relationship between the two main characters, and setting things up for the climactic finale.
I also found each mission interesting -- they ranged from short missions to investigate something odd on another planet to longer term missions like going undercover in a prison. Along the way there's fun and silly scenes that help keep the overall mood of the novel on the lighter side. I haven't re-read all of Little Baldy's novels yet but this one really strikes me as a strong and fairly concise narrative with plenty of foreshadowing and hints that make the reader want to keep reading and see if their predictions were correct.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Click 'keep reading' to see trigger warnings.
General content warnings for violence, guns, life and death situations, loss of and struggle for control over one's own body (due to the aliens that can possess people) -- this is used to fight and manipulate others but does not fall into the main characters causing lasting damage to each other or put them in a nonconsenting sexual situation. In one of the extras there is threat of violence to children (but they're okay don't worry!). There is also terrorist tactics (holding people hostage, strapping bombs to them, etc) in this novel.
ABO specific content: At one point Lan Yu gets drugged and it induces his heat however he is able to get to a safe location and take an inhibitor to ease and hold back the symtpoms for a while. Later on Lu RanKong starts getting intimate with Lan Yu as his heat returns -- Lan Yu is somewhat under the influence of his heat and the pheremones but Lu RanKong says they can stop if Lan Yu wants to. Lan Yu ends up deciding to let the heat run its course and consents.

have you ever read anything by poppy z brite (billy martin)? he's a trans author who was writing weird gay books since the early 90s. based on other books you've talked about here, his work seems up your alley ! 🖤
somehow have yet to, despite knowing about him. definitely will get there eventually - there is no end to the books i want to read. but i am actually quite a slow reader these days, especially during periods of writing, which are growing in frequency. appreciate the rec regardless <3

[NSFW] [Sci Fi] [Space Opera] [Omegaverse Aliens] [Catholic Space Dragons]
Eden'tza, a mid-level political bureaucrat in charge of managing alien immigrants, knows five things.
Teniel Cae is a political terrorist who led a cult that threatened to destabilize the government of his home planet.
Teniel Cae is a religious leader turned exile.
Teniel Cae is a one-in-a-billion biological weapon with capabilities that stress the understanding of modern science.
Teniel Cae is a menace, and
Teniel Cae is coming to Eden's backwater home planet that still struggles for attention on the galactic scale.
Now Eden has to deal with this political mess and personal disaster, and must do it perfectly… no matter how charged the tension between the two of them gets.
A Place Among the Stars is an erotic space opera and soft science fiction, inspired by the fridge logic of omegaverse. It's the story of a religious and political exile who just can't seem to stop causing problems, and of the stone-hearted bureaucrat forced to deal with those problems.
It's also about weird alien sex.

I saw this post recently and honestly this is the way I've been thinking of #HowFatedDominoesFall , as I've been writing it over the past year and a half. I sat on the story for *years* before ever putting it to paper, thinking no one would want to read it. That it would delve too far past the realms of what is expected for its genre.
And then I decided to just write the idea down, it couldn't hurt after all, right? And quickly realized, over the 26 hours straight of writing as I literally couldn't stop myself from cranking out this idea that had been festering within me for so long, that *I* wanted to read it. And that was enough. I realized my desire to see how the story would unfold should have been all I needed in the first place, and in fact at first I never planned to share the story at all. How Fated Dominoes Fall was and is *my* story. It wasn't written to appease an audience-- it was written to fulfill my own desires for representation in a genre I love. It's something I have reread a dozen times as I've continued the narrative, and yet I find something new to love, to be surprised by, at every turn. And I can only hope that there are others out there who might, someday, love it even a fraction as much as I do.
[ALT TEXT: Screenshot of a Twitter post by @ / Devon_OnEarth, containing two pictures of a white man with a salt and pepper beard and hair, that says "I think I did this movie for a single audience member," and "which is me" respectfully. The tweet is captioned with "Many do not understand that this is the ideal creator mindset" [end of ALT text]

Hi, hello, I am alive! I am so sorry for the unannounced and unexpected massive hiatus I took from posting and uploading #HowFatedDominoesFall following the conclusion of Tapas' contest. Though it may seem as if I was merely a sore loser, I promise that's not the case.
In actuality, as some of you may know, I'm chronically ill, and ended up pushing myself far too far past my limits in order to meet the deadline for the Tapas contest. And I apologize greatly for that, and for any worry I may have caused anyone therein.
But things are finally improving a little bit, so I'm finally able to write and upload again! So I'm very happy to inform you all that not only will I be uploading #HowFatedDominoesFall on a set schedule (attached below) but I also have content planned for my social medias with art from some very talented artists, which I hope you'll all stick around to see.
I'm so sorry for the radio silence, and for the cliffhanger that HFDF was left off on for so long, but I'm very excited for y'all to see what comes next. Thanks to everyone who stuck around, and I look forward to giving you all a story you can be proud of.
Also, huge thanks to my friend @/carterr.draws for the amazingly cute chibi posted above :D
Tumblr media
And I hope for each upload, both on social media and on Tapas, to go up around about 8p.m. CST, but we'll see if that works out the way I hope it does. It may end up being that other times work better with engagement, therefore I'll move upload times to then, and update this post with that info.
But here's for hoping this is a good turn around for #HowFatedDominoesFall , and reader engagement (:
And massive thanks to my bestie @likegemstone , as always, for the lovely art on my upload schedule. If you can, please go give them a follow as well as check out her story Her Broken Magic, as it is unbelievably amazing and mind-blowing at every turn. An absolute fave of mine that you will not regret checking out, I promise (:
With love and excitement,
Somketv

re: omegaverse from the exasperated beta's pov: there's a webnovel/webcomic called 'Beta Off Not Dating' that follows this exact concept and it's hilarious
Omg that’s incredible; glad to know I’m not the only one tbh

Can you explain me what the whole alpha beta omega thing means? I'm new to all this 😕
face in hands. user omegabulletin do you know what you've done!!!
that is to say, i'm happy to explain as best i can, just keep in mind that i'm not actually an expert on this particular trope so what you're going to get is a skewed intro + My Thoughts On The Genre. i just love solving puzzles, is the thing.
ok so this general category of work (fic/art/doujinshi/webnovels/real physical published books!!!!) is often referred to as omegaverse. it's an alternate universe setting that includes a social/hierarchical categorization based on biological roles which are sometimes (often?)  often referred to as secondary gender. those roles are very, very, very loosely based on classic(ally incorrect) wolfpack behavioral tropes: alphas (most powerful), betas (support role), omegas (least powerful). you can read a basic overview of common omegaverse features here. uh. warning for kink.
now having said that. the interpretation varies WILDLY from creator to creator, work to work, and fandom to fandom. some drill down heavily on all aspects of the biological experience. some keep most of the biology but leave out the. the mpreg. some totally ignore all of that and focus on the social hierarchy. some land somewhere in between.
omegaverse is vastly flexible and appeals to people for a range of reasons as diverse as infrastructure worldbuilding and breeding kink. in other words the perfect au storm. testament to its strength is how it originated in eng-speaking namerican media fandom and caught on like wildfire in non-eng speaking east asian media fandoms. like. that is a real compliment. (in my experience the reverse—e.g. hanahaki—has been much more common.)
in my opinion, the main vectors of appeal more or less fall into three categories:
physiological variance: knotting, mpreg, self-lubrication, etc.
sexual/romantic dynamics: dominance, possessiveness, mated-for-life, guilt-free heteronormativity
SOCIOCULTURAL DYNAMICS THE PART I LIKE!!!!
we will now talk about the last category. because it is the part i like.
namely, this set-up—arbitrary classifications that affect your treatment by society based on biological factors outside your control—is a walking invitation to commentary on gender and sexuality. sometimes this is done deliberately and is very clunky. sometimes this is done deliberately and is very good. sometimes this is done accidentally and is FASCINATING. (sometimes this is done accidentally and is Big Yikes.)
additionally, it provides an extra layer of complexity and texture that can suddenly make even the most run-of-the-mill canon scenarios intriguing. like, my answer here is half about, hey, what would this mean for the rules of play. what about SUBSTANCE TESTING.
here are a couple examples of both of the above. by the same author (halotolerant) because i thought i had more in my bookmarks but apparently i do not.
If I'm Not Made For You (tennis rpf, novak/andy) - sideways commentary on both gender and queerness in sports. i've linked it here before—it's very well done.
Common Scents (bts, rm/suga) - SUCH good worldbuilding, just a joy to dive into. also, 75k.
it's rare, i think, that you have a completely crowdsourced fan-generated worldbuilding package that is so popularly familiar that you can recognizably engage with it across fandoms. (fandoms do this internally all the time—that's where we get fanon/fanon subversion.) like you could drop me in an omegaverse fic for f1, although i hope you don't unless i get a really good look at the tags first, and i would probably understand the basic dynamics at work and what you are saying about the characters by how those dynamics are applied. (actually, the second link above is a perfect example. everything i know about bts comes from my friends.)
the shared knowledge base also means that the draw, for me, is often similar to what it is for like… the concept of fanfiction in general. given the pattern, where are the outliers. what do they look like. what do the core assumptions fail to account for. a beta that says he's an alpha. an omega/beta romance. a beta/beta romance. a person who seems to fit all or none of those categories.
that's just what i'm interested in! you can also find subversion of the kink tropes—i know a lot less about that part. alpha 4 alpha is popular, subverting the submissive omega trope is popular, others????
and, i mean, there is obviously massive appetite for the concept played straight! it's a foolproof way to find fic about your fave being like YES, YOU are the ONE for me. let's have some dommy possessive sex about it. valid!
this is maybe not the best intro post. i hope i didn't just make everything even more confusing. the fanlore page linked above has a ton of sample fics linked, or you can check out the alpha/beta/omega dynamics tag on ao3.
oh almost forgot. OR you can read the new york times reporting on an omegaverse intellectual property lawsuit. and i think that's the perfect note to end this post on. :)
