this is a beldaruit analysis written after ch.81. spoilers: he's absolutely not just a silly old man on a chair, but actually one of the most well-written characters in wha i think

1. IS HE ACTUALLY THAT OLD?

yeah im really meticulous, but i want to start from this and want you to read it. being old is not bad at all, but i think y'all guys exaggerate beldaruit's actual age.

please just go search some pics of real people in their sixties, seventies. go compare his face with other actually old char's faces. he's not that old :)

beldaruit's smoke figures of himself look younger than his real body, that's true. but here's the comparison of his true appearance to others' who are really about 60-70 i guess

+ beldaruit's lifestyle is not healthy at all. his physical state is bad, he has not many ways to do physical activities, he spends most of his time being in his room. all the more so, he smokes. knowing this, i think he looks even older than he actually is and he's mostly like 45-48.

to be short, he's mostly like your dad, not your grandpa :DD

2. IS HE ACTUALLY THAT SILLY?

yeah he's the silliest. but it's a bit more complicated.

observing, i've came to the conclusion that beldaruit acts silly, too energetic and entertaining only with kids or with ones he remembers since they were kids (e.g. qifrey, olruggio)

there's a simple obvious reason for it, beldaruit says it himself:

yes, he genuinely loves magic and to teach magic. his emotions are true, but a bit overplayed to affect on younger witches and to make them as in love with magic as he is.

one more remark. beldaruit's behavior with riliphin is not as with most kids. i think it's because beldaruit creates a unique approach to each of little witches. beldaruit is able to control and tune his emotional bombing depending on the situation. he is also able to feel well what's going on in others's hearts and minds and he builds his own behavior based on this.

the silver eve arc lets us know more obviously that beldaruit can be serious, responsible, communicating calmly and constructively when it's required. he obviously can modulate his overplaying and emotions when he must do so, there's no problem for him! he is also abnormally loyal to witches' world laws and values, literally more loyal than the most of witches (but we'll talk about it a bit later)

beldaruit is broad-minded, he often manages his own personality qualities to match others', he can entertain others while at the same time taking a huge responsibility (he's the one of three sages after all)

3. IS HIS DISABILITY ADDED JUST FOR REPRESENTATION?

thoughts below are just my hypotheses and personal opinion, keep it in mind

beldaruit's disability is a really important part of him that affects the plot and i think it can help us to understand his outlook and values better.

these engendale's words is kind of synopsis of my take on it:

on the one hand ofc that's not true that beldaruit sees himself better and more important than others! but on the other hand these words are not just a misconception and i'll prove it

as i said, beldaruit is like abnormally and even compulsively loyal to witches' world laws and values. he is also strictly against the forbidden magic. yes he is kind of flexible in this question, but still strictly against the direct violation of the law. that's because he thinks that lack of devotion to the law and to the image of an ideal good witch is a sign of weakness and egoism.

but why does he connect these dots? i think that he cultivates his own fortitude in not using forbidden magic for healing himself, not getting magic and medicine together. beldaruit is the wise in teachings, "stands at the pinnacle of society", maybe the person who knows about magic more than anyone else, at least he's a really thoughtful and smart person. so he'd easily find a way to heal himself using magic with minimal losses of reputation and quality of his life. but he rigorously rejects this idea.

the fact of following this strict inner moral code is a kind of ego supply for beldaruit. despite of his own thoughts about altruism and global equality - how ironic - this is kind of self-affirmation for him, through overcoming himself and a bit demonstrative self sacrifice to the law and greater values.

⬆️ and that's why beldaruit is so aggressive with deanreldy, who wants to mix medicine with magic and talks too light-headedly about it. yes, beldaruit remembers the day of pact and that's really a strong reason already to act so, but i think there are more personal reasons too

⬆️ even more obvious reference on beldaruit's health state in his own thoughts on forbidden magic (it was out of topic, him and coco weren't talking especially about healing)

⬆️ there (and not only there.. like.. in general) is a hint on parallel/contrast between beldaruit and qifrey. qifrey is ready to consider the option of using forbidden magic to bring his eye back. beldaruit sees it as simply giving in to temptation. that's the thing that makes them different

in ch.81 beldaruit shows almost protruding humility and resignation to the fact that his hand is broken. and he has the same mindset about his disability in general. and that's not because he doesn't care about it. his behavior patterns are similar to self harm, that toxically much he is affected by ideas of altruism, self disregarding and not showing signs of weakness.

and he is attach so much to his own image of being disabled. not in a pitiful way, but in a way that makes him motivated to show and push his mental strength to others. i think beldaruit is kind of floating between self-devaluation (that makes him show that much humility) and self-exaltation above others who are "egoistic and weak" and break the law and/or use forbidden magic (of what engendale was saying about)

WHAT'S THE CONCLUSION?

beldaruit is so amazing ahahdhahagha😭

he is so complex and so versatile and so underrated. his personality has so many forms and shapes, you can find both wonderful and displeasing parts there and that's literally a sign of a well-written character. his lore is very subtle and implicit, but so interesting for trying to understand.

beldaruit needs a patpat .

"Man I don't know they just have the vibes. They have toxic yuri energy but they are two grown men. They've known each other since their apprentice days and have stuck together ever since. Qifrey's main magic type was something he took up because Olruggio proposed that he learned to control the water he feared. They live together away from most of society with Qifrey's four apprentices, living the sapphic cottagecore (ateliercore???) dream. Qifrey, due to the fact that his eyesight is very much failing, something which is very problematic when it comes to witches, who need their eyesight more than most, is getting very desperate to get all he lost to the Brimhats, the witches who took one of his eyes and his memories, and Olruggio ends up noticing this pursuit and is implied to have done this more than once. Qifrey does not want Olruggio to know about both his failing eyesight and his goals, so he ends up completely wiping Olruggio's memory of those things, and laments that Olruggio is a kind person, and one who would most likely forgive him again, but also one who would try to save him, even when he didn't want to be saved. He also apologized right up until the moment Olruggio's memories of his secret were gone. In general I think chapter 40 is the somewhat toxic guy yuri chapter ever. I'm very tired so I do not know how to explain any of this, I just thought "wow Orufrey reminds me of this one poll I saw on Tumblr" and then spent three days straight hunting for your blog before completely forgetting my reasoning for Orufrey being yuri right before I submitted this."

For Joongdok: "Well first of all Yoo Joonghyuk has a whole arc that is transfem coded as hell (has a power/technique that can technically only be used by women but somehow he can also use it, for a time he even turns into a woman to wield it and it's. Actually just let me get the quote "The ines of the face had changed but it was clearly Yoo Joonghyuk. No, it was even more than before.") that just kinda happens,, and doesn't get brought up again but anyway. Second of all just look at them. You see the vision. Also a bonus observation is that these two often get shipped in a poly ship with Han Sooyoung and whenever I see people make a "regular couple, yaoi couple, yuri couple, I see no difference love is love" meme with them the combination of which pair among these three is which of the categories is always different"

Qifrey-Witch Hat Atelier

Qualifications:

Witch Hat Atelier has many cool characters who are physically disabled or neurodivergent, but I feel like Qifrey fits the prompt the best. Qifrey is blind in one eye and progressively losing vision in his other eye. He is not explicitly gay in the manga, but I would say most readers view him as being in a marriage-like relationship with Olruggio (they are close friends, live together, take care of kids together, and each wears a tassel from the other one’s witch hat wherever they go).

Propaganda:

He’s a gay foster dad who is blind in one eye and progressively losing vision in the other, from a series that does a lot of cool stuff with disability and how disabled and neirodivergent characters would live in a world with magic.

Hua Cheng-Heaven Official’s Blessing / Tian Guan Ci Fu

Qualifications:

Hua Cheng is the main love interest in Heaven Official's Blessing, a ghost who has been in love with the hero Xie Lian for over 800 years. As if being dead isn't enough, he once clawed out his own eye in order to save a group of humans from marauding ghosts shortly before his ascension to Ghost King.

whats ur qifrey was revived from death (forbidden magic?) theory

ok so the first time we hear about the forest of thristas has nothing to do with qifrey. in chapter 20, its explained that the forest was originally much more bright and living, until a brimmedhat named thristas began using the site to run experiments trying to bring people back from the dead.

next time we hear about it is chapter 30. this is the chapter where we get the qifrey flashback/nightmare and explanation of why he’s so afraid of water, and beldaruit tells coco about qifrey’s experiences with brimmedhats. in this flashback we learn that qifrey was found by knights moralis and beldaruit while following a lead about a brimmedhat being in the forest of thristas. they find a stone tunnel in the forest, in which beldaruit finds fresh blood along the floor. assuming that its a brimmedhat’s blood, the knights put the blood into a magical compass, then follow it to the roots of a large tree. beldaruit excavates what they expect to be either a corpse or a hideout, only to reveal a coffin (beldaruit notes that it doesn’t have “our mark”, and that it doesn’t smell of rotting flesh despite being completely waterlogged). the knights remove the top, expecting a trap, only to find a child qifrey. everyone panics, but qifrey is alive, so they bundle him up and try to get information from him. all that he says is “It was taken, by a witch…” and the blood on the right of his face implies that he’s referring to his eye. beldaruit, out of the flashback, explains that qifrey’s memory and any additional evidence was erased, his right eye was stolen, and he was buried alive.

according to beldaruit, there was no sign of forbidden magic found in qifrey’s body. the council of magic security wanted to erase qifrey’s memory and have him live a normal life, but beldaruit took him in as his apprentice. qifrey kept sneaking out to search for brimmedhats, but eventually stopped after visiting the tower of books, with beldaruit assuming that he stopped because he realised that to restore his memories and eye would require forbidden magic.

in chapter 40, qifrey and olruggio have The Talk wherein qifrey explains why he’s restarted his hunt for the brimmedhats. during which, he says what’s shown below: “The forbidden magic that the Brimhats were researching in Silstas [Thristas]… I have to stop those plans…! I must recover the eye that they stole from me, and destroy it before anyone finds out…!” already, this implies that whatever experiment they needed his eye for was successful to the degree that qifrey needs to destroy it so that no-one else knows about it.

then, after olruggio accuses him of lying to the assembly and witches when he first arrived, qifrey explains further. the last time he and olruggio snuck out, the time when they challenged the tower of books, of memories, qifrey was the only one to go inside the tower. the tower holds a copy of every penned document in the world, no matter how short or informal. qifrey explains: “The records from Silstas [Thristas] were magically destroyed, so there was barely anything left. But after seeing the note fragments that’s still existed, I was able to remember. They experimented on me, with a new type of magic.” olruggio confirms that qifrey is not talking about any kind of magic from the lost era, and the narration calls it “Disorderly and full of potential. New possibilities flowing from chaos.”

now that’s out of the way, here’s the actual theory and my evidence!

qifrey was found in the forest of thristas, which is commonly known to be where the brimmedhat thristas experimented with forbidden magic from the lost era that could resurrect the dead. this experimentation killed the forest, and the brimless witches never mention knowing for certain if these experiments were successful or not. qifrey’s coffin was not waterproof or airtight, but it was buried, so theres a decent chance that he was buried for a good while since the ground near the coffin didn’t seem disturbed in any way before beldaruit excavated the coffin. qifrey was found alive in the coffin despite it being nearly impossible, and was later revealed to have been experimented on with a completely different magic than resurrection. this implies that the site is now being used for new magic that is known to be dangerous and chaotic, so resurrection magic was either no longer of interest to the brimmedhats (doesn’t make sense with how small the brimmedhats numbers are, they’d need all the members they could keep) or they succeeded in reviving the dead.

i think that whatever magic the brimmedhats whipped up to revive the dead works throughout the forest (perhaps in the water? it’d be interesting irony to the magic lake from the first chapter and add an extra layer to qifrey’s fear of water…), and affects animal and/or human organic matter, which would explain why qifrey’s blood was still fresh only in the stone area sheltered from the elements which would’ve swept it away otherwise (also the plasma in blood is majority water, and he was likely drinking water from the forest of thristas while with the brimmedhats…). qifrey was probably killed just after they took his memories and stole his eye. qifrey, since the brimmedhats had finished their experiments on him and he didn’t remember enough to be a threat, was then buried in the first convenient place without care for what happened after. the brimmedhats were either uncaring because they finished their experiments or in a rush to leave because they didn’t want to be caught, both of which would explain why they destroyed all of their research and buried qifrey in an area that they knew could revive the dead. the coffin wasn’t airtight because where the fuck are brimmedhats supposed to get a good quality coffin for a kid when they have no social support and are in hiding. that good ol forest magic keeps qifrey alive until beldaruit and the knights moralis find him however long later.

edit to add: it actually makes much more sense that the brimmedhats knew qifrey would likely be revived. characters talk about qifrey’s amnesia like it was purposeful (which would also make sense narratively, considering the weight of the memory magic we’ve seen so far and how it’s used socially), like it was something inflicted unto him and not a result of some other magic being tested on him, or his hypothetical death. but what is really like to say is this: if you were planning to kill someone, why would you bother taking their memories beforehand if you knew they were going to die? qifrey was buried and the brimmedhats knew full well that he would not stay dead—taking his memories wouldn’t have mattered if he wasn’t alive to share them.

again, we’re still probably missing information that’s relevant to qifrey’s backstory, so the How It Happened part is probably definitely inaccurate, but i do for sure think that qifrey’s having been revived is being foreshadowed. at this point the theory is less of the been-revived part and more of the what-happened part lmao

I did a little "Witch Hat Atelier"- introduction tweet on twitter and since I already have everything here ... I will post it here too:

The story follows Coco, who lives a normal life in a world with magic. But to use magic you have to be "born with it." At least this is what is told to the "normal" people. But she learns that magic can be drawn, aka everyone can learn it. To protect this secret she has to become a witch herself.

She learns everything about being a witch from her Professor Qifrey (yes, the one you all simp over) and his watchful eye (literally another adult witch who´s watching out that no shady stuff is teached and the kids are treated correctly), Olruggio.

She lives with them and 3 other apprentices in Qifrey atelier. Definitely big "Found family"-vibes here!

Through the story you will see topics like disability, LGBTQ, PTSD and autism explored in a very real way. Consequences are shown & it often makes you wonder: who is right and wrong? The people in WHA are like real ones, they aren´t just black and white and their morality is tested a lot.

If you like stories that really make you think and are psychological nuanced you will love WHA! And if nothing else the artstyle is absolutely phenomenal, presenting you an outstanding paneling and incredible vast character-cast. Also featuring different ethnicites!

The way the clothes are drawn will make you stare at a page forever.

The paneling one of the most special ones you will see on the manga-market right now. The way panel-borders are used as part of the drawing or the characters breaking out of their panels makes everything seem so much more connected and directs the reading flow in a special way

when i played princess as a kid i made these conical hats instead of the typical tiara which always makes me laugh but i was WAY more into the conical hat than the tiara. perhaps because it Did make me feel like i was a wizard

Would Witch Hat Atelier Characters Do Drugs?

Qifrey: does weed if there is absolutely No possibility of children around. Used to smoke cigarettes and quit. Did hard drugs one (1) time and had a bad trip.

Olruggio: quitting cigarettes. Has weed gummies. The quitting is in progress bc he gets stressed out when he’s on a deadline. He’s working on it.

Mr. Noloa: doesn’t do drugs. He’s very busy and Drugs takes time he doesn’t have and could be doing something else with.

Beldaruit: does shrooms.

Alaira: weed gummies but only when not around kids.

Easthies: thinks all drugs are Morally Wrong and Bad. Has never done A Drug Ever.

Lulucy: Morally neutral on drugs but doesn’t do them bc she doesn’t like the idea of not being in full control of herself.

Utowin: has a flavored vape and is the most annoying person in the world with it.

Eko and Etlan: do shrooms with beldaruit. it made Easthies Very Mad when he found out.

Vinnanna: stoner. doesn’t let it interfere with her duties as Wise but off duty she is wizard high.

Sinocia: weed gummies exclusively BUT would shotgun from Ermile if she asked.

Ermile: only does drugs with Sinocia when she is offered a gummy. Does not know what shotgunning is.

the kids: BABIES!!!! No drugs. Too small too young. (Adult Agott would be a stoner)

King Deanrealdy: does homemade cocaine.

New Wise in Friendships: aware of his responsibilities and does not do drugs. He needs to be able to Politic at a moments notice.

Old Wise in Friendships: also did King Dean’s basement cocaine.

corollary kings: too busy ruling the continent to do any drugs. They do not know about the basement cocaine and would not try it if they did.
