I just posted a link to a fanfic that got inspired by this Art installation by Olivia Erlanger with a few more photos. What I did not put on there, because it deserves its own post, are these things she said, first on her website:

"Mermaids are a kind of pre-gender or genderless archetype, a representation of a chimeric existence that Olivia Erlanger feels we each take of as different environmental pressures affect transformations. When they are presented as female, mermaids bring up many questions of mobility, not only in a physical sense, abut also around agency.

Ariel from Hans Christian Andersen's "The little mermaid" (1837), for example, gave up her voice to walk on land. This kind of psychological voice loss mirrors Freud's patient Ida Bauer, whose diagnosis was the first recorded case of female hysteria. Hysteria is itself a fiction, and yet the trope of hysterical woman persists. (...)."

And second, this part of an interview she gave:

"The beautiful thing about a mermaid's tail is that it is almost a split phallus. I’m sure you know they are very important in terms of trans iconography, especially for young transfolks since there isn’t direct representation of non-binary genitalia. And similarly, the long sinewy tail splits. It is a “both/and'' rather than an “either/or'' shape. "

I have been accused of having a mermaid problem and fish fetish before, yes, I have always had a thing for mermaids because they were fun, but this is cool! I never knew that mermaids are a part of the trans-culture! Yes, there have been these questions of their presentation in fiction, the terminology alone, the question of agency as she says etc. which are interesting to explore but what she says here about gender makes sense (from my not very informed cisgender-perspective - if it does not actually please correct me), and that makes mermaids so much cooler even!

Mermaids are inherently (gender)queer! Who knew they could become even cooler?!

Neuer Film und Videospiel, das die neue AirConsole-Technologie des BMW i5 nutzt, feiern im Rahmen der Frieze London im KOKO Club Premiere. BMW und Frieze führen ihre langfristige Partnerschaft im Rahmen der Kunstinitiative BMW Open Work by Frieze fort. Die Künstlerin Sara Sadik aus Marseille wird 2023 im KOKO Club im Londoner Stadtteil Camden Town einen Film und ein Videospiel präsentieren, konzipiert für den neuen BMW i5. Das von Attilia Fattori Franchini kuratierte bahnbrechende Multi-Plattform-Format vereint Kunst, Technologie und Design.

London/ München. BMW und Frieze führen ihre langfristige Partnerschaft im Rahmen der Kunstinitiative BMW Open Work by Frieze fort. Die Künstlerin Sara Sadik aus Marseille wird 2023 im KOKO Club im Londoner Stadtteil Camden Town einen Film und ein Videospiel präsentieren, konzipiert für den neuen BMW i5. Das von Attilia Fattori Franchini kuratierte bahnbrechende Multi-Plattform-Format vereint Kunst, Technologie und Design. Beide Arbeiten werden während der Frieze London, die vom 11. bis zum 15. Oktober 2023 stattfindet, erstmals vorgestellt. In diesem Jahr feiert die Messe ihr 20-jähriges Jubiläum mit ihrer bisher internationalsten Ausgabe und einem breiten Programm an künstlerischen Kooperationen und Veranstaltungen, darunter auch BMW Open Work.

Attilia Fattori Franchini (Kuratorin, BMW Open Work): „Ich freue mich sehr auf die Zusammenarbeit mit Sara Sadik, die sich in ihrer Arbeit mit der Schnittstelle zwischen Kunst, Computerspielen und digitaler Technologie befasst. Sadiks Projekt für BMW Open Work 2023 umfasst zum einen ein eigens für den BMW i5 konzipiertes Videospiel, welches das Fahrzeug als einzigartiges Erlebnismedium nutzt. Zum anderen ein Film, die in der BMW Lounge zu sehen sein wird, und dem Format damit eine völlig neue Ausrichtung verleiht. Ich kann es kaum erwarten, dass dieses Projekt den KOKO Club erobert und damit das gemeinsame Engagement von Frieze und BMW für experimentelle künstlerische Praktiken unterstreicht.“ Sadiks Video- und Performance-Arbeiten bewegen sich zwischen Fiktion und Dokumentation. In Anlehnung an Videospiele, Anime, Science Fiction und französischen Rap entwirft die Künstlerin Initiationsgeschichten, in deren Mittelpunkt Figuren stehen, die eine moralische und physische Transformation anstreben. Ihr Beitrag auf der Frieze London umfasst ein interaktives, immersives Spiel, das in Zusammenarbeit mit Experten des BMW Gaming und Innovation Lab speziell für den neuen, vollelektrischen BMW i5 entwickelt wurde, sowie ein Video, die sowohl im KOKO Außenbereich als auch in der BMW Lounge gezeigt wird. Die Designer des BMW i5 werden Sadik sowohl bei der technischen Konzeption des Spiels als auch beim Spielerlebnis im Fahrzeug durch Sound und Licht unterstützen. Unter dem Titel LA POTION (EH) untersucht Sadik in ihrer Arbeit anhand von computergenerierten Szenarien die wechselnden Gefühlszustände junger männlicher Figuren. Die von ihr gestaltete Welt macht deren Emotionen sichtbar und untersucht gleichzeitig die Konstruktion und Darstellung von Männlichkeit, ihre ethischen und moralischen Codes und was dies über gesellschaftliche Strukturen im weiteren Sinne aussagt.

Sadik tritt damit die Nachfolge von Nikita Gale (2022), Madeline Hollander (2020-21), Camille Blatrix (2019), Sam Lewitt (2018) und Olivia Erlanger (2017) an, die in der Vergangenheit bereits als Kunstschaffende für die BMW Open Work Initiative ausgewählt wurden. BMW Open Work by FriezeBMW Open Work by Frieze ist eine jährlich stattfindende gemeinsame Initiative, die Kunst, Technologie und Design in einem bahnbrechenden Multi-Plattform-Format vereint.
