The co-creation process of the Citizen Trilogy has been an exhilarating and enjoyable experience, and is one to be cherished as the journey of creation is no longer a lonely one. This is because the process of collaborating with Xiaoyi is never jealous, competitive, or skeptical. Within the span of seven years, what was intended to be a standalone that was Citizen Pig has grown into a trilogy, with the culmination of it being Citizen X. It goes without saying that the Citizen series need not end in a trilogy, and we never had the intention to stop anyway. We have everyone at The Finger Players to thank, for their trust in us, and for giving us this platform. The Citizen Trilogy has been so much more than an investigation of social or livelihood issues. Its sentiment lies in the more fundamental; love and hatred, the joys and sorrows in survival, and the vicissitudes and reunions underlying our fates. Hence, the issues that we investigated transcend nationalities (Citizen Pig), realms (Citizen Dog), and now, generations (Citizen X). No sentient being will ever be immuned to afflictions, or can ever be exempted from the toils of impermanence. Perhaps there truly is no meaning in all the struggles we undertake, and all our suffering is futile and absolutely ridiculous. But within that is the Citizen series; a journal of the glorious, yet beautiful self-destructive nature of being. Before we launch ticket sales for the much awaited final instalment of the "Citizen" Trilogy - Citizen X, we wanted to do a quick throwback of the previous two Citizens... . In 2013, Oliver Chong and Liu Xiaoyi embarked on the "Citizen" trilogy, motivated by the similarities of their plight(s) on this island, despite the difference in their nationality - Oliver a Singaporean and Xiaoyi a China-born Singaporean PR. They kicked off the trilogy with "Citizen Pig", a thorough investigation of rental woes in space-scarce Singapore. . This production happened a year after Oliver's resoundingly successful "Roots", where he played multiple characters with great aplomb. "Citizen Pig" was also a play with multiple characters, one of them being a school girl (played by Oliver), and that ladies and gentlemen, is why you should be careful what you put in your plays..... .
