SONG DISCUSSION: "THE ACTOR"

In 2013, Pittsburgh, me and my then-girlfriend, Grace Marston, shewn below, who I'd been living with and dating for three years, had a mutual break-up.

Now I won't lie: it was, yes, difficult! TBH, however, I'd been wanting to leave Pittsburgh for years, even before dating her, and perhaps Grace sensed this somehow in songs I wrote near the end, such as

I recorded the above version in 2018, but I had a previous version with a touring band called 9 Swords / Nine Swords uploaded onto bandcamp, which Grace heard once I got back from a three-month tour in 2013, so perhaps I was to blame! For what it's worth, I was willing to give the relationship a chance, I just wanted to get the song outta my system and I thought maybe I could just tour to satisfy this feeling. Oh well...

I ended up staying in Pittsburgh for a few months at different friends' places and anarchocommunist collectives while I weighed my options, sometimes leaving to scout out various scenes, but making the final move in 2014 (yes, since I was more free I was able to pay rent when it was asked of me!)

I kept in touch with a few of the folk I met in New Orleans and went on tour w/, especially bassist Lex Lambert, shewn below, with whom I continued to tour and sometimes lived with here and there!

We played various punk shows and "hippie" concerts, and I even brought him to my alma mater to perform for the staff and students! I began learning more trad folk tunes from The Philippines, such as "Tinikling," a dance shewn above which I demonstrated for these "hippies." In turn, Lex introduced me to more of his friends as well, and I began making more connections in Boston through him, which is how I eventually ended up in Providence, RI!

It was 'round this time that two events occurred which formed the basis of my song: The Actor:

Now I didn't just tour with Lex, of course, 'cause we both were busy with other matters and we both struggled to find places to live. At some point, while I was living or maybe just hanging out near Hudson, NY, I got to know one bandmate: Meghan Orbek, shewn above on the far right.

Heh, it wasn't like a serious romantic, physical relationship or anything so I won't go into it. However, I realized myself being attracted to this woman. She was five years older than me and lived on a house on her mother's property in rural Massachusetts, which I visited and house-sat from time to time, as well as using her painting studio nearby! The whole "feng wei" of the experience reminded me of long-term domesticity in general, which I pondered!

Experience 2:

Some time later, my friend Heather Fisch, shewn in the band picture in the dress on the left, began formulating a play based 'round the Tarot! With nothing else to do and with the offer of payment, as well as housing for a few months, I and my friend Salvatore Geloso (shewn below on the left) jumped at the offer! The two of us were some-time touring partners anyway, with me usually supporting his project "Up Up We Go" on drums! I played my own music and invited him to play as well whenever I could!

Now I don't feel too comfortable sharing this person's image, but during that time I got somewhat close to a man named Wes Eliot, who was the lead in Heather's play. Now many may've thought that the big deal with Wes was that I was discovering that I was gay. Nah, it ain't like that, I knew, capiche? My first crush at college was on a guy in 2007, and I ain't even gonna say who, and no I'm not saying that to make fun of Alice Hansmann.

Wes, in contrast to Meghan, was five years younger than me and just 'bout to leave college: a completely different "feng wei" than Meghan's! I was twenty-five at the time of Heather's play. In my mind, I compared the two experiences of crushness. My time learning improv acting with Heather and performing on stage influenced my thinking as well. Who was I? Who did I want to be with? These things that I was taught or perhaps conditioned to expect out of love: were they necessary? Were they real? Where did they come from?

In 2015, living in Heather's garage, I wrote the song The Actor, which I finished and recorded in 2019 when I was living in Providence and had learned enough fiddle and practiced my audio engineering enough to complete compositions such as this. The rest is history... :

AFTER-SONG DISCUSSION:

Heh, now to clarify me and Wes shared a few kisses on stage and during practice, but nothing came of it. At some point while we were in Manhattan, I told him that I liked him but asked him to stop being so flirty or handsy backstage as it was distracting me from the performance. We amicably parted ways eventually and never saw one another again...

QUESTION 1: "Did you intentionally put the melody from Sand and Water into this song in 2014?!"

Good question! I'd begun inserting that melody into OTHER songs at that time and in the past and future. That Same Smoky Place, for example, was written at the same time as Sand and Water in Pittsburgh (2012). I put the melody into The Actor when I recorded it in 2019 and yes, it's KINDa a joke! TBH, these inclusions're, to me, more serious than joking but especially now that I'm kinda over these songs, I appreciate my past self's sense of humour whenever I notice it, and thank him for his gift to me.

QUESTION 2: "What happened to Meghan Orbek?!"

Well to be quite honest she didn't shew up for a performance once at the Brick House Pub in Great Barrington, MA. This was when Matt Heckler was playing fiddle for my set sometimes and I wanted to try being more professional, so after this I tried approaching music differently, with WAY less expectation for regular performers. I had this state of mind anyway, but I kept going with it, learning to play drums and piano at the same time so that I could fill out the sound just by myself during both songwriting AND for performances! I kinda saw Meghan on social media from time to time, but me and Meghan never saw one another again...

FUN FACT!:

I used the improv acting training that Heather Fisch gave us to further the "self-treatment" of my Asperger's Disorder and wanted very badly to continue to pursue this craft afterwards, for many reasons! Many didn't believe me, demanding that I stick to painting! I found anyway that the acting business was strange and, like some other creative industries, was heavily-influenced by nepotism. I never acted on stage again...
