Ohmigosh! I’m kissing a hedgehog! I’m gonna get salmonella! . . Oh, boy. Surely y’all have seen the gazillion articles out where the CDC states that having hedgehogs is bad. Well, here’s the thing: how many hedgehogs are there as pets? I know there are several hundred in my city alone. I, personally, have had sixteen hedgehogs. Now, how many cases of salmonella POSSIBLY lead back to having hedgehogs? ELEVEN. Eleven. That is all. So, yes, while the risk is there, it’s extremely slight. It’s highly unlikely. And, if you take the proper precautions when it comes to handling them and caring for them, you are more than likely going to be fine. Basically, don’t lick your hedgehog’s butt. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Logan got salmonella back in May. When he received the call from the CDC, he had mentioned hedgehogs, and even they said it was highly unlikely that it was hedgehogs. . . Chances are, the hedgehogs in the cases that were reported came from a wholesale supplier who obviously didn’t take the necessary precautions when breeding them and they then became carriers. . . If you are genuinely concerned about your hedgehog, look at their poops. Are they solid or runny? If they’re runny, take it to the vet and get a fecal done. . . Precautions you can take are: • wash hands thoroughly • do not allow them to eat poop • keep them away from toddlers or seniors—people with compromised immune systems • get your hedgehog regularly checked • don’t allow them near places where you prepare food • keep their habitats clean • DONT LICK YOUR HEDGEHOG . . I love on my hedgehogs all the time. I kiss them ALL THE TIME. And this situation will never stop me from doing so. Just make sure you take the necessary precautions. #olivehedgie https://www.instagram.com/p/BtJu3JJHolP/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=8ejmdfwd4qsu

You’ve never met a sexier hedgehog. 🔥 #OliveHedgie WHAT IS SHE DOING? Olive is self-anointing. This is a method of defence often seen in hedgehogs and lesser tenrecs alike (except tenrecs use their hands). If a hedgehog likes a smell, taste or texture, they chew on said object. They use their mouths to make a foamy paste, which they then use their tongues to smear onto their backs, foreheads and bums. It often requires a bath afterwards. In this case, it did... 👃🏻💩
