The day I adopted him, Denise, who was his previous owner, his first mama, and I had joked about dressing him up as a lion for Halloween. Last year, I finally got a lion mane costume. A few weeks later, the day after halloween, Duke crossed over the rainbow bridge. Sometimes, we have to be hypocrites. Sometimes, we have to do exactly what we tell people not to do, for the sake of the hedgehog. This is Goon. Goon was surrendered in November of 2019 (literally only days after we got Maggie, and he was the third hedgehog that week). The first time I picked him up, he bit me. The first time Connie held him, he took a chunk out of her palm. In the near year we have had him, he has not let up on the biting. Yet, I’ve found that otherwise, he is very sweet. I fear that something happened in his life that has caused some form of PTSD, or something along the lines of. My fear is that someone dropped him, and he latches on so he doesn’t fall, or someone hurt him... I will never know, and even the vet who saw him was pretty stumped. Our usual methods of getting a hog to let go, and even to eventually stop biting, have not worked, so we are compromising. Now, in order to be able to handle him, and play with him, I have to wear gloves and long sleeves, should he ever decide to have a snack. This goes against everything I’ve ever told people to do, for it is so vital for a hedgehog to smell their owners in order to get used to their smell, and begin associating it with good things. I’ve decided to give him a second chance, and a forever home. Goon will be staying in the HuffyPuffs family from now on. I don’t feel comfortable letting him go to anyone else with this bad habit of his, because not everyone else is prepared for the responsibility (or the pain) of a biting hedgehog. I’m thankful for my families, my friends, my best friends, my love, his family, my jobs, and my pets. I think the thing I’m most thankful for is my pup. Maggie has brought me so many wonderful people. She has taught me so much. She has helped me through some tough stuff. She has been by my side at my worst, and not judged me for it. She is my best bud. I’m thankful that I’m here today to be thankful. If you had told me a year ago that I would meet my heart dog, I wouldn’t have believed you. I would have told you that I couldn’t possibly love a dog more than the one I had. Duke had passed away only 12 days after my birthday last year. Maggie showed up in my life only two weeks and a bit after he passed. I never anticipated to get a dog so soon, but she showed up in our lives at just the right time. Now, I can’t even imagine a world, or even a single day, without her. She’s my best bud, my faithful companion, my smart, cheeky girl. She’s disgustingly affectionate. I believe she was picked solely for me. I can’t believe how much my life has changed because of her. Maia got microchipped today, thanks to @windycityrescue’s little fundraiser. She wasn’t the happiest but apparently did soooooo good for the ladies, and she sat in her open bag the whole ride home with no problems. Maia is such a crazy kitten these days.
