OSWALDO GUAYASAMIN (Ecuadorian 1919 - 1999) Las Manos de la Esperanza, 1970 oil on canvas 47 3/4 x 48 in – 121.3 x 121.9 cm Oswaldo Guayasamín was an Ecuadorian artist whose work is characterized by its Cubist-styled depictions of Latin American people. The artist focused especially on portraying the rampant oppression, poverty, and political strife he witnessed growing up. Born on July 6, 1919 in Quito, Ecuador to parents of Quechua descent. Guayasamín showed a passion for art from an early age, and went on to attend the School of Fine Arts in Quito. The artist’s subsequent rise to prominence came about with his exhibition at the Salón Nacional de Acuarelistas y Dibujantes in 1948. Followed by shows at the São Paulo Biennial, the Luxembourg Palace in Paris, and the Palais de Glace in Buenos Aires. Guayasamín is considered by some to be a national hero, his legacy includes the completion of La Capilla del Hombre, a chapel remembering the mistreatment of indigenous peoples in Latin America. During his life Guayasmín befriended the famed writers Gabriel Garcia-Marquez and Pablo Neruda. The artist died on March 10, 1999 in Baltimore, MD. JOSÉ DAMASCENO, the renowned Brazilian artist José Damasceno’s theme is sculpture and the surrounding space, which he investigates in humorous and playful works. From everyday materials he creates poetic formations in meticulous repetitions, sensitizing our perception for the fine nuances. In the installation at O.K, thousands of telephone books stacked on top of one another result in sculptural forms growing from the floor to ceiling. Following a horizontal path through the room, the artist’s footprints grow into the vertical, into the vertical, turning the path into a strikingly sculptural form that also redefines the surrounding space. Latinos have powerful African ancestors, which is frequently disregarded as part of black history. The presence of Spanish and French-speaking Africans in North America dates back to the mid-16th and 17th century; therefore, Afro-Latinos have been part of U.S. history for centuries, but they have not been recognized and are often not part of Black History Month celebrations. The African and Afro-Latino diaspora has contributed much culturally to American society. Afro-Latino artists had globally impacted the world of art, talking about their ancestors and the influences that Africa and slavery had in the Caribbean. This exhibition is an invitation to research the Afro-Latino cultural presence, recognizing and making their work visible as part of Black History Month's celebration.
