He had made a decision. Life was just a series of choices in the end. He couldn’t say he was proud of each and every one of the choices he’d made, but this last one -- passing on the shield, finding a life, that was one he’d had eighty years to embrace. When he stepped onto that platform outside Tony’s cabin, he’d known what he was going to do. He’d known there would be consequences, but they would be out of his hands. He had lost something, in that final battle. Watched another friend die. The best way he could think of to honor Tony’s memory was to emulate him, to go out and find the life the ice had stolen from him. He trusted Sam, he trusted Bucky, and he had enough faith left to believe that things might just work out.

Until now.

He was sitting in Central Park. It was nicer than it was in his day, and now he’d had the privilege of watching it grow and change. He understood time a little better now. For eighty years, he had been having lunch in this park, with his wife or by himself, so he knew instantly that he was not in the same place. Despite appearances, something had happened.

Something always happened. 

I can do this all day, That was still a thought in his mind. But he shook his head slowly. “I’m too old for this,” he murmured, shaking hands folding his newspaper carefully. “This time, I really am.”

I have seen the thing!  And as predicted I have thoughts.  They might not be very cogent but what the hell.  Sooooooo cut for

I think what I liked about it were individual moments.  Like, everything with Sam, that was great.  Loki was a thousand percent in character, given that he barely had a line (and THAT’S how he’s getting his own show, nice).  Steve leading the group at the beginning as a homage to Sam’s VA work.  Nebula learning compassion and friendship from two of the three other Marvel cyborgs.  Fresh from space Tony.  Scott’s everything.  Showing the earlier movies love/seeing them from a different perspective.  All the great MCU surprise cameos.  “America’s ass.”  The massive battle at the end - nicely done giving everyone a Moment, even if some of it felt a little forced.  Hot-potatoing the stones.  STEVE IS WORTHY.  Happy at the funeral.  Happy and Rhodes and the funeral.  Oh, RHODEY, and your everything, I love you honeybear.

There’s a lot I felt meh about, although I thought almost everything was handled well.  Clint’s Hidden Farm continues to piss me off in general but I’m okay with where they went with it.

I have trouble with some of the logic and choices made by the characters about the stones.  There’s...  I feel like some things could have been done better or differently but I have no idea what.  Maybe I’ll think about it a bit and come back.

Tony.  In hindsight, I can see why they’d want to kill him off.  He started it, so he finishes it, etc.  I am uncertain why he and Pepper were holed up in a Rich Persons Cabin when neither one of them showed any inclination to wanting that before, even if retirement was something they both wanted after everything.  I’m actually ok with him as a dad, oddly enough.

Thor.  Okay, so Thorowski was hilarious - and bonus points to the makeup crew for that belly - but when did he and Valkyrie switch brains?  Seriously?  This move would have been okay before Ragnarok but now?  After the scene at the end of that movie, where he became a good goddamn king, to have him degrade away responsibility now?  I’d understand a binger or three but come on.

Speaking of Ragnarok, I continue to have issues with Bruce.  I WANTED MORE, I guess, I don’t know.  I suppose where he is now is a somewhat natural progression of Sakaar’s Hulk but.  Ugh.  *shrugs*  I DON’T KNOW.

Natasha.  What the hell, Natasha.  Honestly I was a thousand percent onboard with where she was going (and scarjo was doing a great job) but then THE FUCKING SOUL STONE THING.  Not only was the whole Gamora Thanos shitshow not addressed now we have this.  YOU DESERVE BETTER  *hands*

I.  Okay.  Y’all know where my heart lies here.  But taking away the shipper goggles for a moment... what was with Steve’s final scene?  I know they were trying to give him closure.  I know that’s what they were going for.  But... they did not achieve it.  They invalidated any growth he may have done.  I liked the glimpse he got of Peggy in 1950 (and holy shit but dangerous secrets were NOT kept under wraps that well, huh, was the arc of the covenant in one of those boxes too geeze) but to have Steve and Peggy growing old together as endgame???  Man.  Peggy lived her life.  She said it herself.  Of all the MCU characters I believe she could pull of having a secret supersoldier husband (AND A FARM HOUSE IN THE SUBURBS) but could STEVE?  Could Steve retire to the past and watch everything happen?  Could Steve allow Hydra to grow in the same office his wife was going to work in every morning and say nothing?  To let Bucky go through decades of torture?  To be a passive face watching the events of his timeline go down?  There are men laying down their lives.  He’s got no right to do any less than them.  Has this version of Steve changed so much?  He’s just.  He’s been so sad and so tired.

(Sidenote: Does this mean Sitwell and Rumlow think Steve is Hydra throughout Winter Soldier?  Because that puts a different spin on things.)

(SIDENOTE 2:  Does the fact that Spiderman and his buddy are back to highschool mean that his buddy was also dusted and thus have to go back to school together?  Imagine joining a class of new kids because your old one fucking graduated five years ago.)

I don’t know, man.  My little heart immediately thought there’s a lot of room in that empty house.  Peggy might have been the love of his life but that relationship is not the one we’ve had built up over three movies.  Steve knows where all the cryotanks were buried and Bucky didn’t look all that surprised at OldManSteve.  I imagined that he and Peggy would dance, and kiss, and hold each other, and Peggy would demand he tell her everything.  And they’d go on from there.

IDK.  I need to think about this some more.  I didn’t hate the movie, but I wasn’t excited about the future the way I was when I left Infinity War.  (I AM AWARE OF THE IRONY.)  I’m gonna go read what a bunch of other people had to say and maybe come back to all this.  Maybe not.  We’ll see.  What did you think?

The Tower looked just as grand as he remembered it. Still big and still ugly, smack dab in the middle of the city, but it had grown on him. As had its creator. They had fought like no one else, he and Tony. Worse than any enemy he’d ever faced, and far less straightforward. Still... Steve had never been as religious as his ma would’ve liked, and he didn’t understand fate the way Dr. Strange did, but it was hard to deny the powers at work when he thought of all he and Tony had been through. To wake up from the ice in time to meet the man who would carry on Howard Stark’s legacy (and improve upon it), to join a team with someone so wildly and importantly different from himself, the man out of time and the futurist clashing together, and in the end, saving the entire universe -- that felt like fate. 

And maybe fate had brought him here again. 

He stepped up to the door and placed his hand on the palm reader. “Password, Captain?” FRIDAY’s familiar voice called out. “I need to verify your identity, given the current crisis.”

“Of course,” he said, thinking for a moment. He tilted his head. “America’s Ass,” he said finally, and the light turned green.

“Welcome back, Captain,” FRIDAY said as he entered the lobby. “Shall I tell the boss you’re here?”

“Sure,” Steve replied, shuffling slowly into the elevator. He pressed the button for the workshop. If the world was in trouble (and if it wasn’t) Tony would be there. “Ask him to pull me up a chair, would you? My knees aren’t as good as they used to be.”
