Seiga Kaku, again! Playing around with the procreate pencil and ended up doodling Seiga for fun.

Fun fact, my Top Songs of 2021 playlist on Spotify has three Old Yuanxian arrangements as my top three (Cuckoo Saver by A-ONE, 邪符「ハオシャオグイ」 by 凋叶棕, and トソリンタンキー by SWING HOLIC specifically). Then there are at least 5 other Old Yuanxian arrangements and one Desire Drive one (Necromantic by Akatsuki Records of course). This doesn't even include all the Old Yuanxian arrangements that aren't on Spotify. I still have a few Old Yuanxian songs in my Top 2022 and 2023 playlists as well. In short, if you couldn't tell, I love Old Yuanxian and it's my favourite Touhou theme of all time.

random headcanon

i think that during the time yoshika was alive seiga and her never even met, but i think yoshika had heard of her in passing and that inspired her to be fascinated by hermits. which makes things ironic in the end, doesnt it!!

regarding jiangshi, this method was one of the first spells that she learned after ascending to hermitdom and was one of the highest points that led to her being cast as a 'wicked hermit.' yoshika is the only one she has kept around for a very long time because she is her favorite, so she is the only one who gets all of seiga's love and anti-decomposition spells. she loves her very much :3 also, since yoshika says that "we" in relations to her guarding the mauseleum, there are definitely more around. jiangshi do not last very long due to decomposition, so they eventually "die" again and are taken out of seiga's control.

i headcanon seiga as being chubby literally because of a dream. i know that sounds funny but heres a fact about me, im kind of a dream obsessed person sometimes, i really like having dreams and thinking about what my brain is doing. but anyways, i had the dream before seiga and yoshika were even really characters on my love radar, i just simply knew them. i dont know what happened in the dream but they were both there, and i think it took place in my house??

Do I agree with Sima Guang? Yes and no. Liu Yu definitely was a ruthless politician who eliminated his opponents, and it's hard to call him a nice person. But that was politics during the Era of Disunity. It was hard to succeed in that era by being nice.

However, I do think that classist bias definitely played a role. While Liu Yu slaughtered 3,000 Later Yan nobles, in the end he did not massacre their civilians, and only sold 10,000 families into bondage. Confiscating families into bondage was not unusual during this era, especially for northern non-Han states. Tuoba Tao, for example, was far more brutal in his expeditions than Liu Yu ever was. As well, when Liu Yu made his expedition into Later Qin, Wang Zhen'e had the support of the local population and consoled them, even if it wasn't Liu Yu doing it himself.

Whether you like him or not, it's hard to deny that Liu Yu was a capable general and politician. He knew how to find and use talent, creating a group of highly talented commanders and politicians. Besides his campaigns, he worked together with Liu Muzhi to clean the administration of the mess of previous incompetent governments such as Huan Xuan's and Sima Yuanxian's. He essentially did to Eastern Jin's administration what Tuoba Si was doing to Northern Wei's administration around the same time. And he was able to eliminate enemies to usurp the Jin dynasty and establish the Liu Song dynasty.

Liu Yu's failure to conquer the north was not caused by his lack of benevolence but rather that he didn't have enough time. In 417, he had little choice but to go back to Jiankang, and the loss of Guanzhong delayed any hope of a northern expedition. As well, he had lost a number of talented generals: Wang Zhen'e, Zhu Lingshi, Zhu Chaoshi and Shen Tianzi. Shen Linzi also died before Liu Yu was ready to conduct another expedition. As well, even getting to Northern Wei's capital of Pingcheng or Helian Xia's capital of Tongwan would be a logistical nightmare, let alone actually taking it. I guess maybe Sima Guang meant that the heavens didn't give him the time for that reason? But even so, Liu Yu was starting to become old, and he needed to stay in the capital as he didn't have anyone like Liu Muzhi who could run things so efficiently when he was gone.

In short, I do agree with Sima Guang that Liu Yu lacked benevolence and righteousness. But that wasn't the reason of his failure to conquer the north, and his ruthlessness was typical for a major figure of this era. Tuoba Gui and Tuoba Tao were not much different, and they could be called even worse.

"Since Jin crossed the Yangtze River, they could not contend for power, and the non-Han peoples wantonly rushed about as tigers devouring the Central Plains. Liu Yu started to use the prince's multitudes to annihilate and pacify Eastern China, yet when he arrived he did not then express his respect to the virtuous and talented, comfort and console the weary people, propagate a happy and easygoing spirit, and cleanse brutality and filth in the government, which would make the crowd of people favour the disturbance and leave many on tiptoes. Yet he preferred to indulge himself in slaughter so as to satisfy the grudge in his heart. Imitating his establishment, previously the Fu and Yao clans were not like this, it is appropriate that he could not assail the Four Seas and satisfy his grand pursuit. Although he had wisdom and bravery, he had no benevolence and righteousness, how could it be anything else that caused it to be as such!"

Well, a few days have passed, and yes, this is still the song topping my personal list. “Thus Spoke the Clockwork God”, sung from Seiga’s PoV, presumably, by the wonderful Yuna. There is some serious fucking emotion being put into these vocals, and they DEMAND that you stop and pay attention. 

“Come hither,” the first words of the song call, and the heavy, hard to ignore, almost carnal bass contrasted with the lighter tones of the Sitar, and that bit of Digeridoo to tie it all together, laying a nice groundwork for one of the hard-hitting lyrical journey ahead of us.

Carnal was a very... intentional word choice for that bass, as the writing here is just that, and reflected wonderfully in the arrange’s overall sound. The lyrics cast Seiga as someone who pretty much feeds off of reactions and emotion, encouraging the listener, egging them on for whatever she can get from them, and in far from healthy ways. 

This song has some pretty dark tones in it, and I can’t help but dig that. It’s not Masa-level “Oh my god” dark, but more of a shady back alley in a place thousands of miles from home, probably a brothel, with the sexual themes present here.

Either way, I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do.

I wanted to record a drawing for a timelapse since I haven't done that in awhile and ended up settling with a Seiga drawing since I absolutely love her. I should draw her more often considering how often I listen to Old Yuanxian and Desire Drive on a daily basis.
