I have been spoiled with years of off the tourist trail experiences if Greece. Years of tiny empty beaches, obscure ruins barely signposted, meals in taverns in the middle of god damn nowhere, staying in bizzar little inns, hotels aimed at traveling business men, or even just my dad's little apartment in the middle of a little town outside Athens.
So it's really weird to be in a tourist specific place. It's nothing to complain about. The staff are lovely, the food is so much better than we expected, the location is gorgeous. But it's clean and sanitised. It's Greek themed. We came through a gate to get in here.
Thing is since I was last in the real Greece dad left his job here, his boss died, the company packed up, Brexit happened, he had a heart attack and a cancerous kidney out, I broke my back, and mum's breathing got so much worse. So he's not holidaying with us, both me and mum are much slower than we used to be, and neither of us are in a position to drive in here. We came cause we wanted somewhere warm after a very hard year and a cold summer. And that has been provided.
And it is really nothing to complain about. There are English themed hotels in England where you turn up and you are greeted with tea and scones and they'll go out of their way to give you the English Experience you expect. There are places like this in Spain, and Italy, and France, and Germany. And people are either looking for it specifically or not looking for anything. This is a business place for scalping tourists and I am here with my savings to get mugged by the tourist institution 😂.
It's just not the Greece I know and there's a nostalgia for what it isn't for me. Not enough dirt. No little old local ladies bobbing in the sea at dawn. Where are the questionable souvlaki holes in the wall selling the best thing you've ever eaten in your life. Hell they don't even have a Goodies near here 😔.
They do a van in to Corfu town though, four times a day, so we'll have to go there at some point. Corfu has greek and Italian heritage. If I am feeling energetic some day I will have to go looking for the dirt 👀.
Mostly I just want spinach pie damn it.

Reunion
@the-flaming-spade
The years had flown by after the events of Marineford. Those years were harsh and unforgiving to the remaining members of the Whitebeard Pirates. After the Payback War, the rest of the crew was disbanded, and the infamous Whitebeard Pirates were no more. People parted ways, remaining in contact with each other through letters or Den Den Mushis. Most of the talks would focus around what they were currently doing. But on late nights, the callers would somberly talk about the good old days and how they wished things were the same as they were before.
After the crew had disbanded, Aiyanna had begun her journey again. She still had a job to do after all. Picking up on her previous occupation, Aiyanna had begun to sell ship lumber to villages and to other pirates. Traveling from island to island as she tried to figure out what her next steps would be. And it was when she was finishing up on a small island that she had received a letter.
It wasn’t signed, but it asked for her services on an all too familiar island. Corfu. The small island that held so many fond memories to her. The beginning of her journey with the Whitebeard Pirates, the start of her relationship with Ace.
Ace. The man who she hopelessly loved. How she missed his warmth late at night; his laughter when she yelled at him for not doing his paperwork on time; his voice when he whispered in her ear. Their love was of itself like fire; passionate, lively, and all encompassing. But on the same coin, it ended harsh and suddenly, leaving behind the burn marks that damaged her whole being. The letter’s handwriting even looked a lot like his...
After two weeks of travel, Aiyanna had stepped her feet on Corfu. Her and Snickerdoodle had changed a lot since the last time they were here. The small puppy was now a medium sized dog, who still managed to be playful and bright during their hardships. The nymph had grown stronger over the years, her soft features fading into a more defined and muscular characteristics. Darker skin from days working in the sun, and various scars danced across her body. The most noticeable one being the large scar over her Whitebeard Pirates tattoo. Her attitude had changed as well, becoming less lively and more quiet after her family fell apart.
Stepping onto the island made so many memories come back to her. The same Loukoumades vendor was there, who she bought a large bag from. Along with the jewelry maker and the small curry restaurant. It all seemed untouched by time. Making her extremely jealous.
The letter had told her to meet the mysterious person by the look out point near the towns square, which looked over the pristine waters of the bay. Aiyanna sat herself down on a bench facing the waterfront, munching on the treats and scratching Doodle’s head while she enjoyed the view.

Spn Meant To Be Masterlist - 2009
Here is the roundup of the very first challenge. Please keep in mind, this challenge was ten years ago. Every effort has been made to find current/existing links, but some authors have packed up their work and not allowed it to be shared. Those entries are here to be preserved for posterity, but the download link and title will have a strike-through. Without further ado, this way to the happy endings!

Discover Greece's Amalfi coast
Tumblr media
(CNN) — From colorful Parga and the stunning beaches of Sivota to the low-key port of Preveza, the Epirotic coast is dazzling.
Characterized as the Greek Amalfi Coast, though with its own allure, this endless coastline dotted with seaside villages, dreamy beaches, mountain villages, archaeological sites and amazing landscapes is still widely undiscovered.
It’s a real gem in Greece, with a charm of its own.
Here are the best places to visit when you travel here:
Parga
Tumblr media
Parga is a colorful old town hugging the mainland but with an island feel.
Giota Siomou Besta
This quaint seaside town, with the colorful houses built like an amphitheater on a hill leading up to a Venetian castle, serves as the perfect base to explore the area.
Although on the mainland, the atmosphere feels like an island, with its compact center and lovely corners crowned by bougainvillea flowers and the surrounding hills full of olive groves.
Buzzing with life, Parga offers mesmerizing views of the Ionian Sea. Kryoneri beach is right in front of the town, while numerous restaurants, cafes and bars line the promenade and continue on the road leading up to the castle.
Panagia (Virgin Mary), the islet facing Parga with its whitewashed chapel, is one of Greece’s most photographed locations and is featured in tourism campaign posters by the Greek National Tourism Organization (EOT), and book covers (Paul Theroux’s “Pillars of Hercules”), as well as a dreamy setting for weddings.
“The islet is also part of a local, urban legend,” says Sergio Tsitakis, co-owner and director of Villa Rossa Boutique Beach Resort, the historic red mansion with a prime location right on Kryoneri beach. (Villa Rossa, Agiou Athanasiou 4, 48060 Parga, Greece; +30 2684031237)
Word has it that shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis, who bought the Ionian islet of Skorpios in 1968, had first expressed interest in buying this one. Today, during summer you can hop on a day trip from Parga and swim near the legendary island of Skorpios and others.
Tumblr media
Villa Rossa offers luxury lodging at the end of Kryoneri beach.
Villa Rossa
In the morning, you can grab a crunchy oven-baked pargino koulouri, a traditional cinnamon-flavored bread ring, from the Green Bakery and stroll along Parga’s promenade and quaint alleys. (Green Bakery, 40 Sp Livada St., Parga; +30 26840 31400).
For sunset, you can head towards the Venetian castle on top of the hill. From up here, as you recharge over a drink at its café and take in the spectacular views, you’ll soon forget about the steep climb.
Back in town, the olive oil factory Paragaea is worth a visit. Visitors can learn how olive oil production is linked with the local culture and participate in an olive oil tasting. (Paragaea, K. Tzavella 19, Parga 480 60, Greece; +30 2684 032889)
Near the castle, the Pargas Distillery Amicos Cocktail Bar serves its own ouzo, liqueurs and cocktails with mezze platters in a pleasant setting. (Pargas Distillery, Tourkopazaro, Parga 48060; +30 694 700 9151)
August 15 marks a double celebration for Parga — not only is this the day of a big Greek religious celebration marking the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, it’s also when locals celebrate their return to their homeland from Corfu in 1913. Almost a century earlier, the townspeople had fled after Parga was sold by the British to Ali Pasha, the Turkish ruler of Ioannina.
Tumblr media
There are plentiful delights hugging the hills around Parga harbor.
Giota Siomou Besta
On this day fishing boats decorated with lights sail towards the port, fireworks splash the sky and a massive street party with bands goes on until the early hours.
Further afield visitors can sample a day excursion to the islands of Antipaxos and Paxos, with its scenic port of Gaios.
On Antipaxos, the out-of-this-world water of Voutoumi beach is one of the highlights.
Archaeological sites such as the Nekromanteion temple (the Oracle of the Dead), dedicated to the ancient Greek gods Persephone and Hades, are another.
Activities in nature abound as well. Into The Wild offers tempting daily excursions for mountain biking, hiking, stand-up paddle boarding, and sea and river kayaking. Surfing is also gaining popularity here.
Best beaches:
Tumblr media
The water is iridescent at Voutoumi beach on the island of Antipaxos.
Rania Margari
Close to Parga, the popular beach of Valtos, the lovely gulf of Lichnos and the tiny cove of Sarakiniko are all great options.
Where to eat:
Villa Rossa’s farm-to-table restaurant serves a seasonal menu based on locally sourced, top-quality ingredients featuring fish and seafood such as shrimps from Preveza or beef fillet with fresh Greek truffle from the Pindus mountains.
The chef, Theo Karathanassis, is known as the “saffron chef” because he uses saffron in many of his signature dishes such as his seafood risotto.
Aegis Dine & Drink, Paragaea’s restaurant, serves modern Greek and Mediterranean cuisine at a great location overlooking the sea. (Aegis Dine & Drink, Parga 48060, Greece; +30 693 724 1479)
Where to stay:
Tumblr media
Villa Rossa offers fine dining overlooking the beautiful Parga bay.
Villa Rossa
Villa Rossa Boutique Beach Resort is a historic mansion with a great location on Parga’s main beach. (Villa Rossa Boutique Beach Resort, Agiou Athanasiou 4, 48060 Parga; +30 26840 31237)
Sivota
Tumblr media
Sivota is a charming fishing village with access to plentiful beaches and hidden bays.
Rania Margari
About 30 kilometers northwest of Parga, Sivota is a small fishing village with a pleasant promenade, tiny center and grandiose setting.
Snuggled in green, with some of the most stunning beaches of the area and islets which create little fjords, this is the perfect place to hop on a boat and explore dreamy places such as Pisina beach or to experience a sunset cruise.
To feel the soul of this place it’s good to wake up early and watch the fishermen untangle the catch from their fishing nets and maybe buy lunch from them.
On the way from Parga to Sivota, a climb up to the village of Perdika rewards with unhindered views of the area. There are also many taverns offering simple Greek dishes.
Best beaches:
Tumblr media
Zavia is one of the best beaches in the Sivota region.
Rania Margari
One of the most exotic beaches is Bella Vraka, reached by walking through shallow water — unusual and fun.
Megali Ammos has taverns right by the beach, while a glamorous beach bar offering super comfortable sunbeds dominates Mikri Ammos. Agia Paraskevi has a tiny island, which can be reached by swimming.
Karavostasi is a long and broad beach with superb blue waters and a traditional family tavern, Skala Karavostasi, serving cold beer, simple food and a stunning seaside view on the far end of the beach.
Where to eat:
Filakas Hotel restaurant (Sivota 46100 Greece; +30 26650 93345) for fish served at the seaside tables with great sunset views.
Melenio (Sívota, +30 2665 093662) is the place to go for ice cream, friendly service and cute outdoor seating.
Taverna “Oasis” in Agia village serves up traditional, hearty Greek food and great mountain views.
Where to stay:
Hotel Oriana (Sivota Thesprotia, Greece 46100; +30 26650 93520) is centrally located and also has recently renovated apartments with small kitchenettes.
Preveza
Tumblr media
Preveza town offers a wealth of atmospheric dining options.
Ideal for a day trip, Preveza has a peaceful vibe, a laid-back seafront promenade and cute little corners in its city center to discover while walking. Here, the modern archaeological museum of Nikopolis and the archaeological site of ancient Nikopolis are major highlights.
During summer, Preveza Jazz Festival and the more traditional Sardines Festival (in August) draw the crowds.
Best beaches:
In the Preveza area, the deep-watered Monolithi and Kanali both stretch for miles offering numerous beach bars along the coast. The area is vast so if you prefer to hear only the sound of the waves and the feet tapping on the sand, it is possible.
Alonaki, with its grandiose rocky setting, is an experience of its own, while Ormos tou Odyssea cove has golden, fine sand and shallow waters.
Tumblr media
Ormos tou Odyssea is a beach highlight near Preveza.
Rania Margari
Where to eat:
Downtown — Amvrosios for fresh fish and Psatha for traditional Greek recipes.
Kanali beach — Miriounis restaurant for tasty, simple food coupled with impressive sea views and sunsets or Sesa Boutique hotel’s restaurant for gourmet dining.
Agios Thomas — “To Ntaliani” and “Jimmy’s” for fresh fish.
Where to stay:
The Captain’s House (4-6 Karyotaki str. 481 00 Preveza Epirus, Greece; +30 2682023915) is a boutique hotel-guesthouse in a traditional mansion.
Daluz Boutique Hotel (Doridos 2, Preveza 481 00, Greece; +30 2682089220) are family-friendly apartments in the Psathaki area.
Sesa (Kanali Beach, Preveza 481 00, Greece; +30 26820 527070) is a luxury boutique hotel at Kanali beach.
Sailing
While Greek island hopping might be linked with the Cyclades islands, the Ionian Sea, with its calmer weather conditions and numerous sheltered harbors, is better for inexperienced sailors.
EY Sailing is one of the new breed of Greek sailing holiday companies offering thematic trips in the area which include visiting archaeological sites such as the Nekromanteion temple, kayaking in the River Aheron, tasting the local gastronomy in Preveza, exploring the idyllic islets of Sivota and also the nearby islands of Paxoi, Antipaxoi and Corfu, hiking, freediving and sailing.
Yachts can be chartered on a bareboat or skippered basis from Corfu, Lefkada and Preveza, all of which offer good marina facilities. Incrediblue, considered an Airbnb for boats, has many options.

Grecotel - Luxury Resorts Greece - Family Holidays Greece
The story of the largest and most successful Greek luxury hotels Greece group is above all personal. Nikos Daskalantonakis started his long journey in tourism from his birthplace of Rethymno, Crete. Nikos Daskalantonakis, along with his older brother Takis, looked further ahead, realizing that blue skies and sparkling seas were only enough to attract visitors’ interest: high standards of quality and responsiveness to tourists’ needs were the key to keeping them and to the future. I adore Split. I went there a few years ago on the first of many road trips with my friend Hamilton (blog post here). We travelled from Zagreb, down to Plitvice, then onto Split and Hvar before finishing in Dubrovnik. It was out of season, just before everyone and their Mother started planning trips and the entire trip cost us £300 each (car rental/food/accommodation/activities – everything), it wasn’t too busy and we had a blast.
Cut to a couple of years ago, when my boyfriend and I were planning our summer trip and Split was high on our list of where we wanted to go. Unfortunately all of the flights were around £300/£400 each. In fairness, we had left it very late to book and so all flight prices were extortionate but considering I had paid £300 all in for a trip a few years before, I wasn’t ready to dish out more than that on the flight alone (we ended up going to Corfu that summer, if you’re wondering).
So, how did we end up going to Split this time?
Well, one of the many problems that come with forgetting/not bothering to unsubscribe from mailing lists, is that sometimes companies send emails with flight sales, and sometimes those flight deals are actually very good. Then, all of a sudden, you find yourself booking flights when you hadn’t really planned on it.
In other words, my boyfriend and I ended up going to Split because we saw crazy cheap flights and had a bit of a mad moment. We went in September (out of season again, like the first time I went) and it was still warm enough to walk around in a t-shirt/shorts but not so hot I got sunburnt – perfect weather for me.
I think our flights cost us around £65 return with Norwegian – one of my favourite airlines, fyi and our accommodation was £120 each. I think we ended up spending more like £350/£400 in total but I wasn’t surprised by that, seeing as Split has become so much more popular in recent years.
As with most trips recently, this was more of a relaxing getaway than a busy trip trying to fit everything possible in. Nonetheless, I would say we did a lot – the perfect amount for the duration of the holiday, in my opinion.
Having been before, we ventured to do things that I generally hadn’t already done, which meant we explored a few options which were a bit off the beaten track:
  What to Do
We only went for four nights/five days but I think still managed to fit a lot in, without being stressed about cramming in too much (especially as I had been before). Here’s what we prioritised:
Beaches – oddly I’ve never been a big fan of beaches but when in Rome (/on a summer holiday), it makes sense to. Within Split, my favourite was Kasjuni Beach, which has a beach bar and curves around slightly, meaning it was a bit less windy than some other places. We also went to a lot of beaches on Hvar, my next point.
Visit Hvar Island – (This is actually deserving of its own post, which I will write next and link back to here). There are a few islands off Split – I would say Hvar is the most well known and if you only have a short amount of time, it makes the most sense to visit. Having said that, if you’re there for longer then definitely island hop. They’re stunning and each have their own character.
Get lost in the Old Town Streets – I have an awful sense of direction so this was very easy for me. Genuinely though, they’re lovely walkways with lots of twists, turns and hidden surprises (the surprises are mostly restaurants but still). If you’re into Game of Thrones, I’m aware they filmed some of it there and even if you’re not, it’s crazy walking along knowing that the streets you’re walking have stood the test of time of real life history (I don’t think GoT is based on fact, I just mean it’s set in the past FYI).
Rub Gregory of Nin’s Big Toe – I won’t lie, I know nothing about this statue other than it’s meant to be lucky to rub the big toe. You can tell immediately which one based on how much shinier it is than the rest of him! I don’t know if I got any luck per say but how often do you get to say you rubbed a giant big toe on holiday? (Maybe don’t answer that)
Go to Krka National Park for the day – Krka is absolutely stunning and not that far from Split. It’s not as big as Plitvice Lakes but still beautiful, and unlike Plitvice you can swim in the water there, which is pretty fun. Also, they call waterfalls ‘Slaps’ which is pretty enjoyable to say. I’m going to write a separate post on how to get there/what to do because I personally found it a bit excruciating working out the best value way of doing it within a day. It was a bit of trial and error but I really wish I knew at the time, what I know now. Basically, if you want an easy but pricey day then book a day trip otherwise, I’ll do a post on how to get there by public transport to save some money (I personally found a few things I read online while trying to figure things out a bit convoluted and unclear – things that should seem simple like how to get on the boat, actually could have done with some slightly clearer instructions on the National Park’s website).

Separate to what we did this trip, I would also recommend the below from my previous trip (post here):
Froggyland
Split Tower
  Where to Eat
This time, I found it harder to find affordable food – when I first went most meals were around £5-£7 but this time I noticed that a lot of places looked a fair bit fancier and upon closer inspection, the prices reflected this.
Out of where we ate, these two places were the most memorable:
Pizzeria Portas – recommended to me by a friend who had just been to Split, it’s a super cosy place with a lot of variety on it’s menu. It’s also in a gorgeous location and pretty damn romantic (if you’re into that).
Bepa! – you know a place is good, when you go there multiple times on holiday. Ok, in fairness it was right below our apartment which made it very easy. But also, the food is good and the people are lovely.
  Where to Drink
Marvlvs Jazz Library Bar – again, if it’s good then it’s good and judging by the amount of times we visited here in a short space of time, we were basically in a committed relationship by the end of the trip. It’s rare to find a bar that feels like home but this one really pulls it off – amazing music (jazz of course, at just the right volume), perfect lighting (not pitch black but also not bright lights stolen from Greggs) and a great selection of whisky (and everything else). We ended up here during a rainstorm which was incredibly lucky, as it’s a delightful place to wait something out. Unfortunately, the storm didn’t end for a few hours until after we had run through the flooded streets and got completely soaked through, which was slightly less lucky I guess.
  Where to Stay
Personally I prefer to stay in an apartment when I’m away, I just feel that it gives me more space and freedom to relax. I like to be able to get up when I want, without being interrupted by room service and then keep whatever I want in the fridge (mostly milk for a tea because I’m super cool and crazy like that).
Below are the two apartments I stayed in while visiting and I highly recommend them both as they’re affordable and in good locations; the top one is right in the centre of the old town and the other is slightly outside. Nevertheless, they’re a short distance from one another and you’ll still be able to explore the neighbourhood with ease.

Of course, Split is also a bit of a party city and you’ll find a lot of stag/hen dos running around but don’t let that put you off. They’re easy to avoid (if you want to) and generally if you spend a trip in the way we did, it’s unlikely you’d have a reason to bump into them anyway!
I’m aware it’s likely I’ve missed some glaringly obvious places off my list but the above are what I would genuinely recommend to friends and strangers alike, so I hope they come in handy.

These Are the People Who Will Choose Britain’s Next Prime Minister
(Bloomberg) -- On a Tuesday lunchtime, business at the bar in Epsom’s Conservative Club is slow.Three gray-haired men quietly sip their pints of English ale, surrounded by beer mats, lacquered wood, and a gilt-embossed honors board listing the club’s chairmen dating back to 1890.In 2019, one issue dominates their conversations, just as it does Britain’s national political debate: Who will become the next leader of their party, and prime minister? It is in clubs like this one, in a genteel English market town 18 miles southwest of London, that the question will be settled. And with it, the future shape of the British government, and the course of Brexit, will be determined. The Conservative Party has an estimated 160,000 grassroots members, representing just 0.24% of the U.K. population. These are the people who will vote by post over the next three weeks to make either Boris Johnson, the face of the Brexit campaign, or Jeremy Hunt, the foreign secretary, Britain’s next prime minister.Whoever wins will take in charge of the U.K. at a perilous time, with just three months to try to wring a better divorce deal from Brussels—and then sell it to a skeptical Parliament—before the country’s scheduled exit from the European Union on Oct. 31.At the bar, John Sullivan, 73, breaks off from watching cricket on his phone and sips his pint. A former fire-fighter, Sullivan is backing the flamboyant front-runner Johnson over the “gray” Hunt. Johnson, he says, is “a risk” but it’s time to gamble. “It’s like a card game, you get your choices: do I chance that or do I back off?” Sullivan says. “I think we should chance it.”It’s a theme that comes up repeatedly. Three years after Britain voted to leave the EU in the 2016 referendum, grassroots Conservatives are tired of Theresa May’s failure to deliver it. Many now see in Johnson’s buccaneering style their best hope of getting Britain out of the EU, even if that means leaving the bloc without a deal, and all the harm to the economy that would bring.Johnson has been clear. He is ready to take the U.K. out of the EU by the deadline of Oct. 31, with or without a deal—in his words, Halloween must be Brexit Day, “do or die.” Hunt has rejected the hard deadline, saying he would wait a few days if a deal could be done, but insisting at the same time that he is prepared to leave without one if the EU won’t compromise.John Williams, nicknamed ‘Geordie’ because he’s originally from Newcastle in north-east England, jokes that he joined Epsom’s Conservative club because the beer is cheap. With a billiard table and darts matches, it’s also a social hub for the former soldier. He voted to leave the EU in 2016, yet is planning to move to Corfu. “I’ve just finished a radiotherapy course for cancer and I haven’t had the results through but I reckon I’ve got three to five years max,” he says. “I want to live out my years with the sun on my back.”Before he emigrates, Williams will vote for the next Tory leader. He’s inclined toward Johnson. “He is a bit of a buffoon and he tends to put his foot in his mouth,” Williams says. “But at the end of the day I think his heart is in the right place.” Hunt, by contrast, seems “weak” and unwilling to take decisions. While party bosses are reluctant to publish details about their supporters, surveys have shown the Tory membership is unrepresentative of the wider population. Research by academics at Queen Mary and Sussex universities found 64% of Conservatives are men and they live disproportionately in the south of England. Some 48% of Tory members are also over the age of 65, compared to 18% of the U.K. population. In the air-conditioned food court of a shopping mall in Epsom town center, Tony Burgess, 81, is drinking a coffee with his wife. He explains he will be voting for Johnson to release the U.K. from its current Brexit limbo because he Britain needs a leader like its wartime prime minister Winston Churchill.“We need someone sort of Churchillian to dig us out of this mess. As much as I admire Mr Hunt he is too anaemic,” he says. “We need an awkward, shambolic, well-educated, hard-hitting guy to achieve something,” he says.Burgess is a former director at Barclays Plc, who’s been retired for more than 20 years. He says he isn’t concerned about Britain leaving the EU with no-deal, arguing the situation needs to be “crystalized” one way or another.Nor is Burgess deterred by reports of difficulties in Johnson’s personal life, such as a late-night argument with his girlfriend at her London apartment, and his track-record of extra-marital affairs.“That’s his business—I want someone who will deliver,” Burgess says. “We’ve had three years of no delivery and you can talk all you like about morals, but it hasn’t done us any good.”Brexit has torn up the Conservative Party’s traditional priorities. Polling by YouGov last month found that rank-and-file Tories are willing to sacrifice their own party—and even the union of four countries that make up the United Kingdom—to deliver on the 2016 referendum result.A survey of 892 Conservative members on June 11-14 found that 61% would accept “significant damage” to the economy in return for leaving the EU; 63% were prepared to allow Scotland to break away from the U.K.; and 54% would rather see the Conservative Party “destroyed” if it means that Brexit is delivered. In Farnham, Surrey, the district that Hunt represents, it is possible to find Tories who take a different view. “I’m a Remainer,” says Jenny Pitt, 64, a Conservative Party member for 15 years and a Tory voter for far longer. “I think it’s a monumental shame what’s happening to us.” She recalls the moment she learned the U.K. had voted to leave the EU in June 2016. “I cried that morning, I welled up and thought: ‘what have we done?’”For Pitt, a no-deal divorce would be anathema to the traditions of the Conservative Party. “I think Boris is going to win, but I will be very comfortable in my bed at night if I know I voted against him.”Yet she remains an exception. There are other reasons beyond Brexit that are motivating Conservatives to turn to Johnson. They need a leader who can defeat the populism of the political left and the right. In the 2017 general election, May lost her majority in Parliament while the opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn ran a socialist campaign that brought him to the brink of power. At the same time, the Tories are facing an existential threat from Nigel Farage’s new Brexit Party, which came top of the national vote share in May’s European Parliament elections and could damage the Conservatives so badly in a general election that Labour wins.Humanities teacher Patricia Wallis accepts that Johnson is “a bit thin on facts to back up his arguments,” but sees his ability to win elections as more important. The 64 year-old recognizes the burden of responsibility party members bear for choosing the country’s next leader. The result will be declared in the week of July 22.“I’m so worried about Corbyn getting in, I want someone who can stand up to the Brexit Party,” she says. “Boris has the personality to do it.”  To contact the authors of this story: Kitty Donaldson in London at [email protected] Penny in London at [email protected] contact the editor responsible for this story: Tim Ross at [email protected], Robert HuttonFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.
