ok but now that i’m talking about slimav (because i haven’t been nearly as insufferable about them as i should) where are my fics of slider and mav getting together as old men. i firmly believe slider would buddy up with mav after ice’s passing bc flyboys gotta stick together and become dagger uncle, which would naturally open up a pathway to exploring feelings they might always have felt but never identified as more than friendship and thus decided not to act on when they were younger. i just have a lot of feelings about them being old men!! i want them to be soft and caring with one another ok!!

Me and anon are onto something here! But after the whole bar serenading thing slider and mav become friends over there completly normal love of TOMMY! I can fully see them in the break room lying on the floor together legs kicking in the air giggling over old posters and like Polaroid they've got and increasingly silly theories as to what happened to Kiaro and who is "Tommy" and why did he eat the drum kit? Sharing story's about when they went to gigs and where this far from Kiaro and how amazing it was.

“used to be but not anymore” I’m BROKEN. Ice doesn’t listen to his own music anymore, it’s too painful. But when Mav or Sli sing along to his voice on the record or the radio, it fixes something in him that was broken a long time ago.

Omg the first time he hears them point out how bad he looked, how sick and sad — he doesn’t know how to react. Then they mention self-care and he has to go sit by himself for a bit. Those feelings, the same ones of self-hatred, no self-esteem and his self-destructive tendencies never really left, he just channeled them into something else. Eventually Sli and Mav start to pick up on the bad days, not that Ice would ever tell them outright — but they know because they love him.

Honestly, a big one is when Nikki Sixx overdoses and “dies” in ‘87 and it’s all over the news. Ice sees so much of himself in Nikki and they knew each other in passing, with MC really looking up to the band Tommy in those early years. He sees his own alternate timeline future displayed back at him and he has to sit down, baby goose in his arms and just staring at the TV in horror.

I would like to add something though! I recently commented this on this Slimav fic written by @secretstudentturtlecowboy (go read it, it’s really good! sfw as well!), but I want to relay it here as well.

Dealing with the fact that Slider and Maverick get together AFTER Ice and Mav already had a go at it (be it a break up or Ice’s death). I don’t see Mav and Slider coming together as a rebound. But I see a sad Mav seeking comfort in someone and Slider sees Mav as someone who needs protecting (he always has seen Mav as someone that needs a lil extra coddling. He’ll tease him effortlessly, but he’s always there to open his arms and give him the comfort he needs).

They’re two people who know the world isn’t perfect and never will be, but that shoulder they so badly need to lean on could be found in the most unexpected place. Slider is there for Mav in his darkest and Mav takes that comfort and lets himself feel something more after feeling like Ice was it for him. Slider sees Maverick curled in his arms one day and feels the most at home he’s felt in a long time and it hit him just how gone he is for him. They navigate through the bumps in the road, but eventually find happiness in each other’s arms.

Now let’s say it’s after Ice’s death (which correlates with my WIP, shoulder to cry on), they find comfort in each other because they both lost a big part of themselves. Maverick can barely hold on, but Slider is holding himself together for the both of them.

Maybe it’s a day Slider wants to make him laugh so they slow dance in the kitchen or have a water fight in the backyard. But they both feel that weight lift slowly and for the first time since Ice’s death, they feel like maybe there’s more than just this. The first time they kiss, it’s slow and deliberate and Maverick almost cries at how guilty he feels, but he can’t stop the way his stomach flips and how he clutches harder onto Slider’s shoulders.

Slider knows he could never replace the love Maverick held for Ice, but he also doesn’t want to. This love is new and exciting and they feel like maybe they can both live again after hurting for so long.

“I don’t want you to be,” Maverick smiles sadly as he cards his fingers through Slider’s greying hair, “just be my same old Slider.” ]

Omegaverse AU idea!!

Omega Sli/Alpha Mav with some friendship arch between Sli and Ice.

Omegas in the Navy or any military service are rare, although there have been a slight improvement over the years. Slider is one of the first omegas that were enlisted after the ban on omegas in military service was lifted in the late 70s, and actually the first person to join TOPGUN as an omega. Slider is pretty passable as beta or even alpha, and only a couple of people who are close to him (his mom, his nana, his little brother Danny, and Ice, who he met in Annapolis) know his second gender. He never shows his ID to anyone and he mostly keeps it to himself when it comes to the discussion of sex and romantic relationships. Mav thinks it’s weird, a guy like Slider would brag about his love life non-stop. Instead he just sits there, laughing uncomfortably until Ice tells them to fucking knock it off.

(Ice has always been like that. Great friend and a great alpha. So protective of Slider. Bonus point if they used to have crush on each other before they realized they were better off being friends. Or I can make Ice a beta and…sort of create a bizarre love triangle. Which do you prefer?)

One day Mav accidentally bangs Slider’s head pretty hard when they are playing beach volleyball. Nose bleed, maybe sone concussion. Hell, he was kinda looking dazed even before the game started. Still not so amicable, he is sort of “dared” to take him to the infirmary. But Ice somehow insists he can’t and he will instead take care of the RIO, much to Mav’s confusion.

Turns out, Slider was having some pre-heat sickness (similar to PMS) and couldn’t concentrate on the game at all. Ice takes care of his wound in the locker room —“Are you taking your suppressants?” “Any other symptoms? Just usuals?” “Do you feel comfortable going back? Do you wanna just stay home for the day?”—a row of muffled questions to which Slider answers with either a quick “yeah” and a few seconds of silence. Mav stumbles upon their conversation, worried and wanted to make sure the taller man was okay. But holy God, is he eavesdropping and accidentally discovering the secret.

Eventually Ice goes out to get some wet towels and bumps into Mav, who is standing just outside the room and awkwardly trying to hide somewhere. Jesus the fury in his eyes. He’s sure he’s gonna get killed on sight. But Ice is surprisingly calm, despite his clenched fists and stiff shoulders. Slider, though, just throws fits as soon as he sees Mav. He tries to push him away, grabs him on the collar of his shirt.

“Get lost,” Slider growls as Ice worriedly tries to pull him away from the brunette. “And if you can’t fucking keep the secret? I’m gonna fucking kill your ass. Is that clear?”

And Maverick can only nod.

Alternatively: Omegaverse AU where omega Sli and alpha Mav slowly builds their relationship. Protective Ice. Hurt Sli. Mav trying to support him as best as he can.

My headcanon is that Slider, as a closeted gay man in military, has experienced a few toxic/abusive relationships and a handful of painful heartbreaks that he never discloses except for Ice and later Mav (after they become close)

Bradley's 16 and mad at the world because who wasn't at 16 and he wants a piercing because even he's not sure he should get a tattoo and slider is like 'i'll do it and you can pay me back by answering the work phones for me on a weekend' And Slider is just offering a safe space for bradley to get piercings because even if he hasn't grown into the eyebrow piercing yet at least he isn't doing it in a friends bathroom with a sewing needle yk??

Slider and Bradley just get along maybe Slider sees himself in him or the many times where baby Brad bullied Slider while he small (throwing up or peeing on Slider as a baby def happened— a story that runs in my family actually LMFAO) strengthened their connection at a young age, Slider took him under his wing and acted as a fatherly figure when Bradley couldn’t stand to be around his actual family and needed a different safe space to go to, which ended up being the tattoo shop :( <3

6. Do they have pet names for each other? Do they like them?

YES, Slider has so many for Mav, the favourite being babygirl or sweet thing. Mav calls slider a teddy bear a lot and baby. They both love the pet names even if theyre a little embarrassed when they call each other them

9. Are they a "we" couple?

Idk what this means but im gonna guess that its like they do everything together? They do as much as they can together, they do need time apart like any healthy couple but they get that with work so.

16. How do they react when the other is upset? How do they try to help?

Slider always comforts Mav when hes upset, sometimes if he’s really mad its best to just let him be but if he’s upset Slider picks him up and takes him to bed so they can cuddle or he’ll sit Mav down on the counter so he can watch slider make one of their comfort meals, sometimes Slider gives Mav a piggyback when he’s cooking too so Mav can cling to him. Mav doesn’t talk a lot when he’s upset but Slider does, he’ll tell Mav about his day or about a movie he watched and Mav just listens, Slider voice calms him and just being around him makes all the bad just melt away.

At first Mav had no idea how to comfort Slider, he was pretty good at comforting people but seeing someone like Slider cry for the first time stunned him and he didn’t know what to do. He learned the Slider loves when Mav runs his fingers through his hair and scratches his scalp, so now when Sliders upset Mav will pull Slider to bed or the couch and get him to lay his head on Mavs lap so he can run his hands through his hair. Slider just needs Mav to touch him when he’s upset, as long as he knows hes there he’ll calm down.

19. What values do they not share? How do they reconcile those differences?

One thing i think they disagreed on at one point was having kids. Slider wanted one or two and Mav didn’t think he was ready, yes he’s the man with like 20 kids and he loved helping raise Bradley but having a kid that was really his own scared him, especially when he was still in the navy. He didnt want the same thing that happened to him or Bradley to happen to his kid and once he told Slider that he understood the fear Mav had. They talked about it a lot and idk if i want them to have a kid because i think they’d wait until Slider retired but then that seems like they’re both too old, if they were to adopt a kid it’d be a girl (girl dads slimav!!!)
