I would like to add something though! I recently commented this on this Slimav fic written by @secretstudentturtlecowboy (go read it, it’s really good! sfw as well!), but I want to relay it here as well.

Dealing with the fact that Slider and Maverick get together AFTER Ice and Mav already had a go at it (be it a break up or Ice’s death). I don’t see Mav and Slider coming together as a rebound. But I see a sad Mav seeking comfort in someone and Slider sees Mav as someone who needs protecting (he always has seen Mav as someone that needs a lil extra coddling. He’ll tease him effortlessly, but he’s always there to open his arms and give him the comfort he needs).

They’re two people who know the world isn’t perfect and never will be, but that shoulder they so badly need to lean on could be found in the most unexpected place. Slider is there for Mav in his darkest and Mav takes that comfort and lets himself feel something more after feeling like Ice was it for him. Slider sees Maverick curled in his arms one day and feels the most at home he’s felt in a long time and it hit him just how gone he is for him. They navigate through the bumps in the road, but eventually find happiness in each other’s arms.

Now let’s say it’s after Ice’s death (which correlates with my WIP, shoulder to cry on), they find comfort in each other because they both lost a big part of themselves. Maverick can barely hold on, but Slider is holding himself together for the both of them.

Maybe it’s a day Slider wants to make him laugh so they slow dance in the kitchen or have a water fight in the backyard. But they both feel that weight lift slowly and for the first time since Ice’s death, they feel like maybe there’s more than just this. The first time they kiss, it’s slow and deliberate and Maverick almost cries at how guilty he feels, but he can’t stop the way his stomach flips and how he clutches harder onto Slider’s shoulders.

Slider knows he could never replace the love Maverick held for Ice, but he also doesn’t want to. This love is new and exciting and they feel like maybe they can both live again after hurting for so long.

I feel like i should add like a timeline to this cause its kinda everywhere and im ignoring some of the canon stuff mav did between 86 and tgm, in my head he became a test pilot in like 2006? and thats basically the only thing he does so he can be with slider more and thats around the time ice stopped flying so also when slider became an airline pilot. idk when slider retired or if he even did yet but after mav flew the tgm mission he retired but he does still fly his p51 in airshows and if the navy needs him hes still a civilian test pilot

when slider was in the navy he was bigger than most of the people there, he had a lot of muscle and not a lot of fat, when he left he did keep up his workout routine and he started eating better because he had more access to food, hes still mostly muscle now but he has a healthy layer of fat on him too.

When mav was younger his mom was a great cook, he loved to help her in the kitchen but after his dad died she just stopped, she barley ate, she did make stuff for mav but never let him help and she didnt make it with love like she would before, she wasnt happy. (while being a test pilot you have to be like better than in perfect shape but im ignoring that) he has more muscle than he did before but now that hes not flying in action as much he has more time to get back into cooking and he loves it, it feels like when he was cooking with his mom again and it has a lot to do with slider, slider loves him and he loves the food he makes, mav definitely has a little tummy now and slider loves how soft he is, theyre both still in great shape now, they love working out and being active (in many ways 👀)

My headcannon is Slider’s enneagram is type 2 (with 3 wing) while Maverick is a 8w7.

Slider is a pleaser, Rick Rossovich has said…and I’m not the same ever since. Slider is a pleaser, an altruistic “No. 2” who is also charming and funny. His personality perfectly complements Maverick, who is charismatic, strong, yet (ultimately) lonely and love-starved. His firm embrace and maybe a soft kiss or two will surely revive him from the ashes of all the bridges he has burnt and rejuvenate him so that they can rebuild.

At the same time, his protectiveness and assertiveness help Slider not to slip into the deep void of people-pleasing and exhaustion, the facade of his strong, funny persona making his vulnerability hard to notice for both himself and others. His gentle dominance and fierce protectiveness allow Slider to be more selfish, without his bravado or the altruism running deep inside of him getting in his way.

Particularly the latter will play a big role in their lives later on. A short story—or a poetic scribble—based on my headcannon about Slider which I’m going to include in my ongoing fic at some point!

Featuring: Slider being from a troubled family. Slimav being fluffy. Maverick being slightly clueless but trying his best.

Slider was the third generation Eastern German-Russian immigrant. His nana and his mother emigrated to the US in the 30s.

Slider learned cooking from his nana, and some of his signature dishes were related to his maternal origin. Veal Orloff, Jaeger schnitzel with short pasta, hearty soup with Regensburger wurst. Danny and Slider had always been close. Danny liked dogs, dancing, and Star Wars. He proceeded to become a ER nurse, working in a hospital in New York City. Maverick never nudged him to come out, either. He was just happy to be with Slider. He would, though, pay visit to her grave. He told her how much he loved his Ronnie. He told her how much he was thankful that he and Ron ever met.

Slider did not know who his father was, and neither did Danny, who seemed to have some sort of middle eastern admixture. Slider knew they both inherited their physiques from their nana’s side—the Kerner blood just happened to be so tall—but other than that remained a mystery.

Maverick once told him that his hair made him look like a sculpture, like a Greek soldier carved from marble. Slider opened his eyes for a moment before chuckling.

Maverick later learned Slider believed his father might have been of Greek descent. When he was a child, he read a book about Greek history and saw a picture of a curly haired men, their hair styled like his own. He looked just like his mother, or so his nana had told him. But he’d got a curly hair that nobody else in his family had. He’d got a curly hair that his nana had to learn to take care of. He believed it was the only thing that connected him with his father, no matter how ridiculous it might sound like a true childhood dream it was.

Slider would dream of his unnamed father teaching him how to drive. He would dream of his unnamed father teaching him how to shave. But more than anything, he would dream of his father teaching him how to style his hair in the morning. A secret he’d kept. An embarrassing, petty, melodramatic one—which Maverick disagreed with. He, too, knew how it felt to be deprived of his parents’ presence, and how much it meant for him to just exist as Pete Mitchell sometimes—an unyielding prove that his parents once lived.

Every time Maverick ran his fingers in his curly strands, Slider just nuzzled him as if to ask for more. He kissed Slider on the lips as the defined coil-shaped curls came loose in his hands like a ribbon on the Christmas morning.
