GUIDE TO LOLITA VS HIME GYARU

I’m going to break down the differences of Sweet+Old school Lolita and Hime Gyaru for any J-fashion enthusiasts In this post.

At first glance these styles can look very similar with the joint goal of looking like a feminine “aristo doll” in rebellion of social norms of conformity when it comes to getting dressed but appearance wise they are different.

( I’m only going to talk about the visual differences here but there are other great sources for history )

Silhouette —

Lolita: What makes Lolita fashion so recognisable is the cupcake silhouette of the petticoat underneath the skirt, how the skirt has lots of volume at the top and stops 1/3 down leaving the the rest of the skirt’s curve to slow down.

Hime Gyaru: Hime Gyaru dresses and blouses do not have petticoats or if they do they are thin and flat. Because of the babydoll style of the dresses they have a more loose fit.

Colours —

Lolita: In Sweet styles the colour palette of most coords are pastels with pink, blue, yellow, purple and some green, Old school has more bold colours with darker reds, greens, pinks, whites, blacks and blues but with white accents with lace.

Hime Gyaru: Colour palettes are relatively the same for every Hime Gyaru coord with cold pinks and white with occasional accents of black.

Modesty—

Lolita: Most Lolitas wear a blouse underneath their dresses but in summertime some Lolitas wear their dresses with out a blouse. Their skirts tend to be above knee height and will wear knee or thigh high socks or patterned tights.

Hime Gyaru: Hime Gyaru tends to show more of the shoulders because of low necklines. The skirt normally reaches its end before the end of the hand and socks normally aren’t prevalent in Hime Gyaru fashion.

Prints —

Lolita: With Sweet Lolita prints you can find florals, animals, food, drinks and sometimes buildings. With Old school you can find prints like plaid and tartan. It is important to note that it’s mainly split down the middle with Lolita dresses having prints or being plain.

Hime Gyaru: Almost every Hime Gyaru dress will have a floral print ( this being roses ).

Misc —

Lolita: While some Lolita’s wear colourful wigs it isn’t needed for a Lolita coord. Makeup can vary from rather subtle to pink blush and gloss.

Hime Gyaru: Hime Gyaru is known for their dirty blonde Goldilocks wigs. Will commonly sport a fake tan although it may not be as dark as other Gyaru sub styles. Lipstick and blush is a light cold pink and they wear large false eyelashes. Long acrylic nails are a must.

Please note that there are exceptions to all of these and there are no rules to these styles and the most important thing is having fun! :))

After putting off the ending for 6 years, I finally finished watching the 90s cardcaptor sakura anime and man 😭😭😭😭😭😭

Any show I loved as a kid I never actually finished bc I was scared of things ending and I didn’t like the feeling of being sad, but like now that I’m older I’m finally revisiting these shows and giving it closure

The main cast is so dear to me ughhhhhh 😭😭 I love the art style too

i know love triangles are a contentious topic but sometimes a love triangle shoujosei manga will create the best most pathetic wonderfully embarassing little man BUT he's only this good Because theres a love triangle that gave him that character arc. or sometimes they'll give you the greatest gal pal on earth but only after she tries to kill the main character because they both have a crush on the same guy. i understand love triangles can be frustrating but sometimes they are. a necessary evil

Majokko facts✨ ep.1

Few people know that Rai, in 1970, at the behest of the enlightened executive of the time (Marcello Rodinò, Chief Executive Officer) seriously thought of opening up Japanese animation, through serials that were starting to gain a substantial space in the rest of the globe ( Mexico, Canada, England).

The choice fell on "Maho no Mako-chan" a free and daring transposition taken from Andersen's "The Little Mermaid". The cartoon should have been simply titled "The Siren" and cheered up the children of the time.

The theme song was therefore commissioned to the work team of the singer Marisa Sannia who perfectly centered the story that was going to be told. Unfortunately, however, some scenes of the anime were deemed too rough for the childish audience and it was decided that the times weren't mature.

As a form of 'compensation' Marisa Sannia was enlisted among the protagonists of 'Canzonissima' on 31 October 1970, in competition with the song 'La Sirena' which, however, without the support of images, did not achieve the desired result. It is the first time that the original Japanese theme song with the song created for the cartoon has been published in Italy.

The 48-episode series arrived in Italy with the title of "A little mermaid among us" only in 1988 (18 years later) "massacred" by cuts that are now quite laughable and with one of the ugliest theme songs ever made.

May Manga Mayhem - Day 1

It's May the 1st and today we are doing the revolution in France !! This re-enactment is the perfect opportunity to talk about Versailles no Bara

The Rose of Versailles is a fascinating series: among the first to be set in an historical setting, Riyoko Ikeda's work influence on shoujo manga can still be seen today. Her elaborate and intricate style is gorgeous -I gasped at so many page turns- and fit the dramatic scenes very well. This was such a resounding success that this work got multiple anime, drama and scenic adaptations.

The story itself, apart from being very instructive even for a French person, is pretty groundbreaking in its presentation of gender and relationships. The main character Oscar, a woman raised like a male soldier by her father, is blending the frontier of the gender binary. Although it struggles to totally emancipate from gender norms (it was published in 1971 after all), the limits are pushed pretty far, and it's pretty delightful to read. I did experience a bit of gender euphoria reading it.

To my sense it is a crucial reading to build up your manga culture, considering how much impact it had on the manga landscape.

To wrap things up, I encourage you to listen at least the intro of the anime op. Sets the dramatic mood really well !

so the premise of fruits basket is ridiculous and hilarious, but setting it up and justifying it is even more funny. like...

ep 1: teenage girl living in a tent gets taken in by a teenage boy and his weird uncle to be their live-in maid (she has a whole other cleaning job btw which she keeps). their cousin shows up trying to fight. he lives here now

ep 2-4: establishing relationships with her new housemates, antics, and weird mystical stuff (cute shoujo romance plot)

ep 5: circumstances that led her to living in a tent get resolved, she can move back in with her family now. this makes her so sad (and her family is weird and mean) that her grandfather, who is responsible for this 14 year old girl, is like, you can move back in with your two boyfriends and their weird uncle if you want. she does.

ep 6: her two girlfriends come over to sus out her two boyfriends and their weird uncle and somehow miss that they all turn into animals every 15 minutes. they give a thumbs up.
