some of yâall clearly don't understand what it's like to avert your eyes when your friend starts changing in front of you and your heart starts pounding in your chest and you could say something, SHOULD say something, tell her to change her clothes in a different room and admit to this freakish attraction that you know she doesn't feel, ruin the friendship by coloring every moment of casual intimacy with the knowledge that you are a pervert who wants more, that you are a threat. you donât say anything. and you look up and watch the pale expanse of her lower back from the corner of your eye as she pulls on a white blouse, and something lurches in your stomach and you laugh at the joke she just told even though you werenât really listening to the set-up. later on you will feel sick and guilty and cry alone in a bed that feels empty, but for just a moment, you are laughing with a beautiful girl who loves you, and it doesnât matter if itâs wrong

i don't think ace personally enjoys reading himself, but he does enjoy being read to
like back on dawn island he'd see me lost in the sauce of like may bird and the ever after or warrior cats too busy hermiting to go out and go outside and he asks me what the appeal is so i just start reading out loud to him from then on and it becomes a bit of a tradition that persists into adulthood
he lays on my chest, going in and out of sleep because of his narcolepsy, and i read out loud with him commenting here and there and because i'm a yapper that just turns into the two of us having an entire conversation about what we just read or what we've read up until that point or i have to go back some pages to read something he fell asleep on
#look it's self shipping hours#flaming pearls#sea otters#so now when i impulsively get books for my growing collection on the spadille and eventually the moby#i also get books i think ace will specifically enjoy following the journey of#sometimes we will revisit old books we read through as kids though#the may bird trilogy becomes a fun âwell damn this was a series in hindsight that spoke your devil fruit into existenceâ#flaming pearls (sea otters)

Another guest spot for Jacqueline Pearce (and in very fashionable form), as British agent Ruth Klinger - or is that double agent? - in Man in a Suitcase: Somebody Loses, Somebody... Wins? (1.19, ITC, 1968)
#fave spotting#jacqueline pearce#man in a suitcase#supreme commander servalan#servalan#somebody losesâ somebody... wins?#classic tv#itc#1968#I'll be wailing about this episode more in the tags on its own post (and reallyâ forever more)#but for me this is the absolute pinnacle of the seriesâ an incomparable highpoint#and Jac is a big big part of that#her character is in every way McGill's equalâ including crucially in a professional sense#they have historyâ they have lore! we find out that after McGill was framed as a traitorâ she was the only person who continued to send him#christmas cards!!! McGill literally says that saved his life!!!!!! this episode makes me insaneâ THEY make me insane and Of Course it can't#end happily with them running away together (something McGill actually suggests at one pointâ a highly atypical moment and the mirror of#his scenes with his other old flameâ Taiko in Variation on a Million Bucks; when she suggests they go away together it's McGill who resists#and says he has to do the job first.. here it's Ruth telling him the Exact Same Thing and agghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh)#also SPOILERS for the episode incoming#but that offer of McGill's comes AFTER he finds out she's setting him up and has apparently betrayed him#i mean there's other stuff going on but Aghrhhrhjj. ehhhbdndn. sigh. so yeah.#also I'm just gonna say it: Jac looks incredible in this episode. i mean the pixie cut?? the dresses??? she has at least 6 costumes which#is kind of insane for a MiaS episodeâ and they're all fantastic. and she's so so beautiful#McGill is so angry in the second half of this episodeâ angry at the intelligence services involvedâ angry at the cold war#angry at being set up againâ angry at the way human lives are being used and traded and moved like pawns across a chess board#but he is never angry at Ruth; he even tells her she doesn't need to apologise. he understands because she's a professional and he was a#professional onceâ in the same jobâ doing the same dirty work. and in the end he risks everything for her. sigh. this episode guys.

Wasn't there also an alien thing added to the plot in Pegasus too? Or am i thinking abt another seriesđ?
You're thinking about the right series! I'm a little hazy on the details, but towards the end these giant pre-everything entities who were enormous gelatinous blobs that consumed everything they touched and intended to absorb the entire universe, essentially, were added to the plot. There was something about how Emily and co's actions had somehow set them free from their eternal prison? And that with the time travel things they'd actually been present the entire time? Something like that.
And they solved this problem by blowing up the entire world, genuinely and unironically.
I remember being a little wtf about that turn the story took. Like, I guess you can do that? But like why did we do that. Why are there enormous blobs. Why are those our antagonists now.
I just went to check to the wiki to see if there was more detail I'm forgetting (the wiki does not have the info I'm looking for), but it reminded me just how much I've forgotten. There's a list of characters and I cannot for the life of me remember who Earl and Frankie and Coius and Iapetus and so many others are.
But anyway. yeah there was a whole evil alien thing suddenly at the end for some reason, quite wild
#the pegasus series#quil's queries#luv-of-venus#i also can't for the life of me remember /why/ emily got a new body...#i know she did. i know its based on diana. but I don't remember the specifics of what happened to her old body#that necessitated a new one#was she slowly destroying her old body because it was mortal and couldn't contain the flame of olympus properly?#and so after something particularly dramatic they gave her a godly body that could properly contain and channel it?#that feels kinda right. but I'm missing details and its driving me mad#anyway!

this is why i pray no one asks me how i got into percy jackson
#so my friends introduced it to me on a trip together when i was like 8#i had heard of it before but this was the first time anyone somewhat explained the plot âpercy is the son of a greek god n has dyslexiaâ#and because they were into it i watched a lavendertowne video in her series called âby the bookâ and because of those videos i found out#about the movies. one day i was scrolling through my sister's dowloaded movies and saw percy jackson#i decided to hate watch it cause i heard it was bad but i actually liked it and felt so ashamed. i mean the first was was fine second one#was like just 90 minutes of nothing#i also liked watching this guy called movie flame and i watched some of his pjo vids (since i thought i'd never read pjo)#and i constantly rewatched his videos where he rants about the movies cause i loved them#and when pjotv's main trio's casting came out and i saw the cast i was like âomg they're perfect... and like... actual kidsâ#and i kid you not. the thing that convinced me to read the ENTIRE series was the thought of âwait- do 12-year-olds go into a casino?"#so technically i read for my friends technically i read cause i watched the movies technically i read cause of youtubers i liked and techni#ally i read for my friends#like i need to tell the whole story i can't just say one of the answers#sorry for typing this whole thing and only having like anxiety and stuff though and not ADHD and/or autism

synopsis. period piece, forbidden love
contents. ooc, angst (eventual comfort), yandere emperor!gojo, lovesick!gojo, servant!reader, obsessive behavior (5k words of gojo pining), lowkey unreliable narrator, time skips
notes. inspired by the apothecary diaries and this post. loosely based off of ancient japan (this is basically its own world). this is the prologue to the series where everything can generally be read as a standalone ! (fic under the cut)
series masterlist | next
emperor!gojo who broke a hundred year tradition to take you as his only lover. despite your role as a concubine, everyone in the imperial palace knew he was going to make you his empress.
emperor!gojo who had not meant to fall in love with you, but you have managed to somehow charm him. a man that single handedly brought his own clan to powerâ weak in your hands. hushed whispers around the imperial palace call you a witch, but they never reach your ears. not as long as he is alive.
emperor!gojo shamelessly showering you with love. he pays no mind that it is highly frowned upon, he will have his hands on you every time you are in the same room.
emperor!gojo who is livid when there is an attempt on your life. his usual ocean eyes turned to blue flames like a wild animal. servants and clan elders alike scurry under his gaze. the assailant is taken care of by his own hands.Â
emperor!gojo who is forced to satiate the clan elders into submission by taking in another concubine from an influential clan. he insists to you that it is no more than a political formality. who are you to meddle into imperial affairs?
emperor!gojo who canât help himself and ends up falling for another girl who his clan elders demand he must wed. she is much younger than you, beautiful and is well bred; a perfect match for the emperor.Â
emperor!gojo whose frequent visits to you come to an end, forcing you to move from his chambers and back to the consortsâ pavilion.
There was a time when you had everything. A place to call home in the Inner Court, a beautiful palace with anything you could have ever dreamed of. Servants, admirers, riches; you had it all. But what was most dear to you was your loverâ a man so divine, many thought he was directly blessed by the hand of God. It was too good to be true. A woman of lowly birth like you, paid as homage for the sins of her clan against the new reigning family of Japan, becoming a concubine of the Heavenly Emperor.Â
You remembered it all too well.
His brilliant mind that once strategized the downfall of the previous imperial family, calculating its next move in a game of Go against you. You can still remember the shock on his face upon his first defeat. The way he would keep you from leaving to fulfill your other duties until he was satisfied, eyebrows furrowing as he struggled to keep up with you. No matter how hard he tried, you remained victorious. It drove him mad.
You remembered the stolen kisses while you made your rounds in the Inner Palace with your ladies in waiting. It took you quite a while to learn to tune out their giggles every time the Emperor dips you down to taste your lips in broad daylight. The grin that he wore after was enough to leave your legs weak.
Above all, you'll always remember how safe you felt in his strong, reassuring embrace. Youâve seen him train, and it was no wonder the Gojo clan rose to power so quickly as a result of one man. The way he wields the katana is unlike any man on the face of the earth. Those arms were your sanctuary. You can still vividly recall the attempt on your life, orchestrated by a traditionalist incensed by the Gojo clan's swift ascent to power. The emperor, outraged by the assassination plot, personally saw to the man's execution.Â
However, the damage was done and it caused great strain in the Imperial Palace.
To appease the old geezers that were forced out of power, Emperor Gojo had taken in another concubine from one of the Big Three families of Japanâ a beautiful Zenin girl. Her flowing, silky hair and saccharine voice enchanted everyone in the Inner Palace, captivating the Emperor, most of all. She was younger than you, with perkier breasts and soft skin that was enough to capture the attention of any man.Â
You donât blame her for taking the Emperorâs attention away. Though you would be a liar if you said it did not hurt you. Deep down, you cannot deny the agony that sears your soul, realizing that the only semblance of love you've ever tasted remains unrequited. With a heavy heart, you resign yourself to the bitter truth of your existence, knowing all too well the cruel confines of your place in this world.
You were merely a pawn, and the Emperor did not want you anymore.
That was made clear months later when you received a scroll from the Emperorâs advisor, a man you were once well acquainted with, Geto Suguru.Â
âWhat is this?â You asked him quietly, your heart silently begging the Heavens it was not what you had suspected it to be. The black haired man in front of you does not respond, and you feel something pierce into your heart. Despite being a part of the Emperorâs court, it was rare that you received letters directly.
Your suspicions were confirmed when your shaky hands finally opened the scroll to read the familiar kanji written by your beloved.
âThe Emperor decrees the termination of your role as concubine." Geto spares you the trouble of deciphering the characters neatly written in ink. âIn his mercy, you are to be moved as a servant in the Outer Court. You are to serve the Imperial Physician.â
What you remember most was the silence. The Emperorâs silence after the stressful months you had to endure alone. The silence shared between you and Geto when you were forced out of the Imperial Court. All that was left was the sound of your heart breaking and the wood creaking underneath Getoâs feet as he walked away. Satoru never bothered to see you off.
Seasons change and by the next spring, youâre busying your hands with collecting herbs for the Imperial Physician, a man by the name of Yaga Masamichi. He is a kind man, pitying you enough to fill your days with laborious tasks to prevent your mind from wandering to thoughts of the unfortunate turn your life has taken. He is even generous enough to supply you with a new wardrobe of clothing full of light fabrics, a luxury you thought you would lose in the Outer Palace. Though the initial humiliation has worn off with the passing of time, you are still constantly reminded of your fall from grace.
Looks by the mix of condolences and disgust are shared when you roam the walls of the Outer Palace. You hear whispers of how the Emperor is infatuated with his newer, shinier toy. It is enough for you to swallow the bile that makes its way up your throat.Â
âIt is no wonder the Emperor tossed away a wildflower like her in exchange for a cherry blossom. He needed someone to rival his own greatness.â A particular comment stopped you in your tracks. Your grip tightens on the woven basket in your hand filled with medicinal herbs you had collected earlier that morning.Â
âHave some pity on her.â Another eunuch whispers. Your breath falters, but you continue your walk with your head held up. Youâve heard the rumors. The beautiful Zenin Himiko has charmed the Emperor enough that there are rumors of a royal marriage to come. It doesnât help that the Emperor has remained monogamous to her since he had banished you from his court.
A comforting hand links itself with your arm, âIgnore them. I saw Yaga shooing away a crowd of suitors that were lined up for your hand.â Ieiri Shoko scoffs, secretly sending you a wink. She has been studying medicine under Yaga for nearly a decade, eagerly accepting you as a companion upon your arrival. You feel your cheeks heat up at her flattery. You know sheâs just trying to make you feel better.
Although your beauty never faded, it seems as though you are no longer sought after in the marriage market. Not that it matters, considering the new life that youâre living. Youâre now a personal servant to the Imperial Physician, leaving no time to worry about suitors and such. Your days are filled with good workâ tending to Yagaâs cherished garden that he has sowed for decades rather than frivolous games and attending the Emperor. It may not be glorious compared to your former life, but it was the best a woman of your status could receive.Â
When you and Shoko return to Yagaâs estate, youâre surprised to see the somber look that has settled on his aging features. Shoko makes an offhand comment that he will age faster if he keeps scowling. She receives a scolding.
âIs something the matter?â You gently place down your basket full of herbs.Â
Yaga sighs, calloused hands rolling up a scroll with the Imperial Seal. âIt appears the Emperorâs consort has fallen ill and His Majesty commands my presence in the Imperial Palace.âÂ
The Royal Consort. The woman that dethroned you: Zenin Himiko.
âI understand.â You nod, maintaining your composure while two sets of eyes scrutinize you with keen observation. It was only natural the emperor wanted the best doctor in the country for his object of affection. âShall I close up the shop while you journey into the Inner Palace?âÂ
Yaga shakes his head, âThat wonât be necessary. I will have Shoko act as my stand-in.â He remarks with a quick glance in her direction âYou, on the other hand, will accompany me.âÂ
Your eyes widen.Â
âYou cannot be serious.â
âTypically, one of my apprentices would accompany me on such journeys. However, now that I have acquired a personal attendant,â He gestures towards you with a flick of his hand, âIt shall no longer be necessary.â As he speaks, he runs his hand absentmindedly through his well trimmed beard, gaging your reaction.
"Iâ" Your words falter and fade away. "Yes, sir," you respond, inclining your head in deference, a stark reminder of your place. While you may have concealed it, you were seething with humiliation. Returning to the Imperial Palace after a year of exile to serve the woman who took your spot was mortifying beyond measure.
âVery well. Pack enough for one weekâs time. I doubt the Emperor would have called me if this was a light ailment.â He says gruffly. âWe leave at dawn.â His gaze shifted to the horizon outside.
âYour Grace,â You purr at the feeling of his large hands scratching your head.Â
The smile that rests on his face is almost ravenous. âYes, my love?â
âI thinkââ A soft sigh escapes your lips when he presses on your weak points. âI should g-go.â
His ministrations stop almost immediately.Â
âGo?â His eyes peer down at you in his lap. It is now that you realize the weight of his piercing gaze. âHave I commanded you to leave yet?â
âNo, butââ
âThen you have nowhere else to be.â He huffs, unintentionally puffing his cheeks out. You stifle the giggle that nearly escapes from your lips. He vaguely resembles a pufferfishâ or so you think. Though youâve never seen the round creature with your very own eyes, youâve heard that the delicacy was something only members of the aristocratic class would feast on.Â
Your mouth waters at the thought.
âWhat are you thinking about that could possibly be so important? Keep your eyes on me,â A strong hand squishes your cheeks together and firmly guides your face back upon him.Â
You should be embarrassed; ashamed at the intimate position His Majesty has trapped you in. The way your head is tucked away in his lap as he peers down at you, nothing to shield you away from him. It was incredibly scandalous, considering that you were an unmarried woman! But it seemed like the Emperor had taken no mind towards it. You would even dare to say that he was enjoying it, with the way his lips quirk upward at the sight of you squirming.Â
âYour Grace,â You repeat, determined to free yourself from his hold. His eyebrows furrow.
âSatoru,â He reminds you. You purse your lips. The position you hold in his court is simply not high enough to grant you the privilege of calling him by his given name.
âYour Grace,â You try again, the title rolling off of your tongue naturally. A man like him did not deserve any title less than.
âYouâre breaking my heart, sweetheart. Indulge a man, wonât you?â He pouts down at you. As stubborn as ever, you donât relent.
âI would be overstepping my boundaries as your consort to call you as such. That privilege is reserved for your future bride.â You take advantage of his guard let down to sit up and escape his hold. If he could have caught you, he made no effort.
âI am a simple man.â He follows you to your vanity. A giggle escapes your mouth. He is anything but. âI want my love to call me by my name.âÂ
You turn around to cup his cheek. He eagerly leans into your touch, sighing happily at the contact.
âI wonder how Lord Kento and Geto would react to you like this.â You tease, a smile unknowingly painting itself on your lips.Â
Satoruâs face falls, features morphing into an appalled expression. You watch him close the distance between you through the mirror.
âKento?â His voice had a dangerous lilt in it. You blink, unsure what spurred on the sudden tension in the room. âSince when were you so comfortable around him? He cannot satisfy you like I can.â He reminds you of the manâs castrated state as an eunuch. You wince.
âI have not gotten comfortable,â Youâre careful to pick your words. Gojoâs possessiveness was something that was not easily tamed. âHe simply provides good conversation while you are away. The palace is far too big and lonely while youâre away dealing with clan matters.âÂ
The only response you get is a quiet grumble. âYouâre lucky that youâre pretty.â His large hand creeps its way into your hair again, undoing the hairstyle your ladies in waiting had spent a copious amount of time on earlier that morning. Gojo carefully plucks the extravagant silver hairpin from your hair, the dangling pearls clicking softly at the sudden movement. His hands slowly make their way down to the kimono that you are wearing, hands ready to undo the obi.
Your hands softly hover his, âI fear that our roles have been reversed. Should it not be me who gets you unready, Your Grace?â
He chuckles and through the mirror you can see a smirk make his way to his lips, âIâd let you undress me any day. Just say the word, beloved.âÂ
You roll your eyes, but allow him to continue. It was moments like these with the Emperor that led you on to believe that there was a semblance of love between the two of you.Â
How wrong you were.
PRESENT DAY
The sun has yet to meet the horizon when you arrive at the Inner Palace. The horse-drawn carriage that you and Yaga had taken is the only sound at the scene, clopping down the stone road and back to the Inner Court. You miss the serenity of the beautiful palace you once resided in, knowing that it will be bustling with life in just a few short hours.
In front of the large doors of the primary ceremonial hall where the Emperor spends most of his time, stands Lord Nanami, a counsellor to the Emperor himself. Time has only made his face sterner, but his neatly styled hair and blue and yellow dyed court attire remained the same. He waits patiently while you and Yaga make your way up the flight up stairs that lead up to the hall.
âI am glad to see you in good health, Yaga.â Nanami bows.Â
The man next to you promptly waves his politeness off, thanking him for his hospitality. You stand silently while the two men engage in conversation regally.
Lord Nanami sighs, âHis Majesty has been plagued by stress lately. To say I am relieved by your presence would be an understatement.â His statement is a subtle reminder that you must harden your heart upon entering the palace walls. The meticulously built walls were no longer a sanctuary for you, rather, a painful testament that you were no longer wanted.Â
Yaga lets out a hearty laugh and it reveals a rare sight, Lord Nanamiâs lips curving upwards by a slight. âI highly doubt the boy would be glad to see me. The appearance of the Imperial Physician is portentous.â He scratches his beard. You tilt your head in confusion at how he referred to the Emperor.
âI suppose, yet I am intrigued to find out how he will react upon seeing his object of affection flourishing anew despite the sting of frost.â Nanami audibly wonders. Even a fool could understand his eloquent comparison. The Emperor would be thrilled to see his consort in full bloom once again. You pray that the Heavens would grant you some mercy from witnessing such a scene.
âYouth,â Yaga shakes his head, chuckling to himself before regaining composure. âI mustn't keep the Emperor waiting. [Name], please gather the herbal ingredients to treat the young Consort as you seem fit. I shall confer with His Majesty and meet you in her chambers to declare a proper diagnosis.â
You bow, âYes sir.â
While Yaga prepares to enter the doors where The Heavenly Emperor resides, your eyes couldnât help but gaze longingly at the large bronze doors.Â
âYou seem well,â Nanami addresses you for the first time in over a year. Your eyes trail from the Emperorâs door to the blonde man in front of you. âAllow me to guide you to our herbal stock.â Nanami offers you his arm as you start to make your way down the stairs.Â
You take it, lightly holding his arm. âThank you, Lord Nanami. Time away from the Inner Palace has been like a breath of fresh air,â You respond, ensuring your voice carries no malice. You hear the large palace doors from behind you open, the metal creaking loudly in the quiet dawn.Â
âI must ask you to call me Kento,â He leads you down the stone steps. âWe are old friends, it is strange to hear anything but.âÂ
You focus on your steps down the stairs, only responding once your feet meet the solid ground, âI fear that our social statuses have changed since then. It would be the cause of a scandal should anyone hear I am calling the Imperial Counselor by his given name. Your admirers would have my head on a stick.â
âYour imagination is amusing as always, [Name].â He gives you a closed eyes smile. You huff.
âI am only speaking the truth!â You insist. He chuckles.
âIt is quite refreshing to see both you and Yaga again. Iâm not sure how long it has been since I have been at the imperial physician.âÂ
You gape at his confession. âYou mustn't skip your annual visits to the physician, Kento. It is in the best interest of your health!â You lightly scold him, lifting your hand to flick his forehead. It was a force of habit. âPerhaps if I have time after treating the Consort, I shall do a check up on you.â
Nanami clears his throat at your comment, the twinkle in his eyes dissipating as if your direct touch had burned him.Â
âI would rather not lose my head.â He mumbles, eyes scanning the courtyard around the two of you. You knit your eyebrows, confused.
Nanami leaves you to fulfill his duties once you arrive at the Royal Kitchens to retrieve all the necessary items to treat Consort Himiko. You are glad that he did not accompany you into the kitchens to prepare Consort Himikoâs herbal soup.Â
The memory of it still irks you.
âYouâre late,â One of Consort Himikoâs ladies in waiting snaps just as you enter the kitchen. You look up to see a young girl, dressed in a light purple kimono. It must be Himikoâs signature, you note. It was strange to see someone outside of the Imperial family donning the color, but you suppose it was only a grand display of Himikoâs influence.
âYouâre a lot more plain than I anticipated,â The other lady in waiting quirks an eyebrow, eyeing your appearance. You furrow your eyebrows, shocked by their rudeness.Their undying loyalty to their Lady was enough to fuel an unspoken hatred for you. Though youâre not sure that the two coincide, you donât blame them.
The two are mixing a concoction that you donât recognize to be used to treat the sick. The taller one adds some aromatics and herbs in and you see the other one unwrap a cloth to reveal a rare delicacy from the West. Cocoa, you believed they called it.Â
Then it hits youâ the two are not making a medicinal soup for their Lady, rather they are making an aphrodisiac! The image that conjures in your head makes you blanch. Back in the Outer Palace, Shoko had shown you the effects of the stimulant (you shiver at the memory of her shoving a treat laced with it into your mouth). It was certainly a night to remember.
âHow pathetic,â You mutter underneath your breath, quickly rushing to obtain the ingredients you needed without making conversation with the two girls.
Fortunately, they pay you no further attention for the time youâre in the kitchen.
âPlease excuse me,â You bow upon entering the Emperorâs chambers. Despite the Consortâs Pavilion being similar in size to a small town, you remember spending most of your time in the Emperorâs chambers rather than your own. It was probably the same case with Consort Himiko. You slowly place the tray carrying broth and medicinal herbs to treat the Consort down on the circular wooden table in the middle of the room.
Out of curiosity, your eyes canât help but soak in the Emperorâs room. Not much has changed since youâve left. His Majestyâs preference for minimalist decorations have stayed the same, along with his natural musk that fills your nose. You feel your face heat up at your own thoughts. How could you think of such a thing when you are about to meet his new lover?
Your gaze moves to his bed, where Consort Himiko residesâ only to find nothing.
âHuh?âÂ
You observe his bed, silk sheets neatly made, seemingly untouched. The sounds of your sock clad feet patter on the wooden floor as you make your way to feel the bedsheets for any signs of warmth, but you are met with nothing.
âDonât you know that entering the Emperorâs chambers can be punishable by death?â A deep voice from behind you causes you to jump in your spot.Â
Your guard is immediately raised, head whipping to the sound. In hindsight, you should have never agreed to accompany Yaga on his trip. It was a foolish idea all along, you think as all of the air in your lungs dissipates upon seeing your former lover.Â
Standing at the entrance of his own sleeping quarters is Gojo Satoru, his frame big enough to tower over the doorway. His arms are crossed over each other, electric blue eyes focused on nothing else but you. You press your thighs together tightly to avoid squirming anymore than you are. He has loosened his dark blue kimono to expose some of his hardened chest, a sight any woman in the nation would die to catch a glimpse. Even underneath all of the fabric, anyone can see his divinely sculpted physique.
âYour Grace,â You waste no time to dip your body deeply, praying that he will allow you to keep your head by sunset. âI apologize for the intrusion, I was under the pretense that Consort Himiko resided in your quartersââ Your voice loses itself in your throat when you see his shadow quickly encroaching.
âHimiko stays in her Pavilion,â He towers over you, eyes gazing down on you. âBut one might suspect that you already knew that.â
Your eyes frantically meet his feet, desperate to salvage what was left of your dignity, âI assure you that I speak of the truth, Your Majesty.â
When he doesnât respond, you slowly lift your head.
The flustered look on your face must have been amusing to him, as he makes his way closer to you, bending down to interrogate you further.
âIs that so?â He hums, enjoying every second of cornering you into his chambers. The back of your legs have met his bed, trapping you. You inhale sharply, trying to keep your breaths even, refusing to give him the satisfaction of knowing the effect he had on you.
He continues, âYouâre awfully skittish for someone who was happily skipping around my territory in the arms of another man just earlier.â His predatory gaze seems to darken.Â
âKento?â When his name leaves your lips, the man in front of you grits his teeth. You turn your head to the side, deliberately avoiding him. âWith all due respect, Your Majesty, but I donât see how Kento and Iâs relationship is any of your concern,â He does not take your actions well, his gaze searing into you.
âIt certainly is when the woman in question is you,â Gojoâs voice loses its feral lilt, distress flashing across his face. Thereâs a newfound desperation in it that chips away at your resolve. His hand raises to your face so slowly, as if he did not want to startle you.
âThis is wrong. Iâ I saw a couple of servants earlier making aphrodisiacs, perhaps you could have unknowingly consumed them.â You tell him, frantic eyes meeting him. It is not unusual for couples to use aphrodisiacs, you know that after under Yaga. The Emperor must have mistaken the laced dessert for his usual.Â
He shakes his head, running a hand through his white hair.
âYou are mistaken. This is solely your effect on me.â He promises. You could barely believe his words, stuck between feeling offended or shocked.
âHow could you stand to be so cruel?â Your voice is barely above a whisper. There are no tears in your eyes this time. âI am not a courtesan you can buy for the night,â You snap, pointing a harsh finger to his chest.Â
âWhat do you mean?â He sounds breathless.
âWhatever do I mean?â You scoff, a dry laugh escaping your mouth. âFor a year, all I have gotten is pity from the world, because you decided I was no longer entertaining. You could have at least banished me away yourself. Instead, you sent Suguru who couldnât even look me in the eye! Donât you know how humiliating that is?â With every word that left your lips, more venom seemed to drip. Anger was prickling you all over, taking control of the rational part of you.
Gojo seemed to be taken aback by your outburst. It was far too late to take anything back now. If you lose your head by nightfall, so be it.
You dig a deeper grave for yourself when you take advantage of his moment of weakness to flee. Heâs quick to react, attempting to grip your wrist.
âWait, [Name], belovedââ He uses that all too familiar term of endearment, but it doesn't deter you.
You accidentally bump into the circular wooden table placed in the middle of the room. What an awful place to keep it, watching in horror as the Consortâs medicine shatters on the floor. To add salt to the wound, a vase you recognize to be specially gifted to the Emperor from a foreign nation tips off too before you can catch it. The sound of porcelain shattering fills the room.
â[Name]! Are you alright?â You hear Gojo ask from behind you, but you run over the broken shards before he can catch you.
Had you bothered to pay closer attention, you would have noticed articles of your clothing and a couple of your missing belongings littered all over the roomâ creating a faux impression that you never really left the palace.
Days passed by after the incident, and luckily, your head was still attached to your body despite offending and nearly endangering the Emperor. Yagaâs disappointment when you had told him what happened was made evident when he sent you home early after hearing the events that transpired, insisting that he can handle the Consort on his own. Normally you would have argued, but you knew better than to inflict Yagaâs wrath.
âNow youâve really done it,â Shoko whistles lowly, walking in from the front of Yagaâs shop.Â
You hide your face in your hands, âI made an absolute fool of myself, didnât I?â
âA fool? No. A conspirator against the Emperor? Perhaps.â She dangles a scroll with a familiar seal on it. The Gojo Clanâs familiar emblem reflects off of the sunlight spilling into the room. Your heart drops.
âOh, theyâll have my head.â You moan, hands instinctively lifting to shield your neck.
âThough Iâm quite impressed that Yaga only sent you back here. He used to have worse punishments.â She shudders before impatiently unraveling the scroll. You watch her eyes gradually widen as they read the contents of the letter. The scroll falls from her hand.
You rush to it, desperate to read your fate.
To [Last Name] [First Name],
Greetings and prosperity unto you.
By the mandate of the heavens and the authority vested in Us, We hereby extend Our solemn words to you, [Last Name] [First Name], servant of the realm, in acknowledgement of your debt to the Empire.
In response to your unmeritorious deeds, The Emperor bestows upon you His imperial pardon from capital punishment. In consideration of your obligations and the harmony of the realm, it is hereby decreed that you shall serve as an indentured servant to the Imperial Household for a period commensurate with your debt. During this time, you shall labor faithfully and diligently under the supervision of Our Heavenly Emperor, performing duties essential to the welfare of the Empire.
By fulfilling your obligations with diligence and humility, you may yet earn favor and esteem in Our sight.
The Imperial Court
A loud gasp escapes your mouth.
You feel your legs weaken, your emotions running wild. Shokoâs eyes meet yours, mirroring your frantic gaze. In that moment, you are met with the same suffocating sense of hopelessness.
extra!
gojo was kicking his feet happily as he watched suguru draft out his letter to you. suguru thought it rather cruel, while the white haired male was too busy purring happily as he fantasized about having you back into his grasp.

LOVED YOU AT YOUR WORST - r.c series - SIX
pairings: ex!sweethearts; rafe x thornton!reader; rafe x sofia. chapter warnings: mention of pregnancy; abortion; lack of self-care; drug and alcohol addiction;
Rafe had been clean for the past three years.
Over the course of the year, things between him and you had been smooth sailing.Â
It was almost easy, something he wouldnât have believed a few years back when everything he touched seemed to go up in flames. Thereâd been a time when he was just too muchâangry, impulsive, doing all the wrong things for all the wrong reasons.
Heâd been selfish, reckless, it was intense, way too intense, and when you fought, it was like you were both throwing grenades, just waiting to see whoâd blow up first. Youâd pushed him away, heâd pushed you harder, and youâd both crossed lines that shouldâve never even been close.
Eventually, both of you learned to talk instead of shouting, learned when to back down instead of pushing buttons just to get a reaction. Youâd gotten better at letting each other breathe. Heâd pull back when he felt himself getting heated, and youâd do the same.
It wasnât perfect; sometimes youâd still get into it, still end up in an argument that felt like old times, but it was different. There were no more lines on the bathroom counter, no disappearing at all hours.Â
Until Ward died.Â
Rafe didnât know what the fuck to feel when he got the news. He knew what he was supposed to feel, right? Heâd done it before with his mom, now it was his dadâs turn. The man who had raised him, the one to teach him everything he knew about how the world worked, even if it wasnât pretty.Â
Ward was a hard man, a strong man. The kind of guy who commanded respect, even if he didnât always show it the way others might expect. But thatâs the thing, he was a man of respect.Â
To Rafe, that meant something. Everything.Â
Ward had shaped him, he couldnât just forget that, couldnât act like that wasnât important.
At first, you were there for him, no question.Â
He knew you hated Ward, you barely tolerated the thought of him even existing in the same room as you. You spent those first few weeks with him, making sure he didnât spiral back into the shit that nearly destroyed him. He needed the support, even if he didnât always know how to ask for it.
You were there, holding it down. You got through it, the late-night talk, but then, you started getting distant.
At first, it was subtleâsmall things. Heâd catch you looking at him like you didnât quite get him anymore. Youâd pull away when he needed you to listen, when he was ranting about Ward, and even though you tried to hide it, Rafe could see the dissociation.
He pretended he didnât sense it, tried to tell himself youâd come around.Â
After all, this was his grief, and no one else was going to understand it the way he did. His dad had been everything to himâmaybe not in the way you thought he shouldâve been, but that was just the reality of it.
For the first time in years, it felt like you werenât there with him. It didnât make sense to him how you couldnât see it.Â
Ward had been a tough guy, sure, cruel sometimes, but he was also a provider, a father who tried to teach him how to survive, even if it didnât always come wrapped in the right way.
He wasnât perfect, but he was the only father Rafe had ever known. He was gone all of a sudden and that was what had hurt the mostâknowing heâd never get the approval heâd always been chasing, even when he was clean, even when he was doing better. There was no fixing that.Â
He wanted to mourn in peace, but no one seemed to understand why Ward still mattered to him, not even Sarah.
Three weeks after the funeral he spent his days surrounded by a few bottles of scotch heâd stolen right out of his dadâs stash. Who was gonna stop him now, anyway? He almost laughed. Three years clean. Shit, that was something, wasnât it?
Heâd had people telling him he wouldnât make it three weeks, let alone three years. Shit, his dad sure didnât think heâd get this far. Only you.
Rafe squinted at the amber liquid swirling in his glass, then leaned back in the worn leather of his dadâs old armchair. It felt weird being in here, in his chair, in his office, breathing in that persistent smell of old cigars and varnish.
After the whole âfuneralâ, with everyone looking at him like he was a wild animal about to snap, this was the only place he could sit without someone judging him.
If youâre so clean, why are you drinking yourself half to death? He took a slow sip, letting it burn down his throat.Â
It wasnât like it used to be, that high that hit fast and hard, and didnât care if it broke him apart.
This was different, a slower, quieter process.
Besides, he was in control this time. Just a drink, he told himself, fingers tightening around the glass. No powder, no pills. That was progress.
So what if he had to take the edge off? Who wouldnât, if theyâd just said goodbye to their only living parent and had to look at their younger sisters crying like that?Â
He was practically swimming in alcohol. Rafe knew he was overdoing it, but he didnât care.
Every time he saw himselfâ on a window, mirror, whateverâhe had a drink in his hand, and something about it just felt terrifyingly right.
Grounded.
Nobody understood him; they just kept looking at him with that worried face, like he was on the verge of losing it like he used to when he was younger. Maybe he already had.
You watched himâreally watched himâand yeah, he could tell you were pissed. He saw it in that little wrinkle between your eyebrows every time he took another sip. But you didnât say anything.Â
Even Wheezie was on his case in her quiet way.
She was hanging around, throwing out old jokes and trying to make him smile, but he barely reacted. She was looking at him like she was scared, as if he was some stranger she was trying not to set off. And he hated thatâGod, he fucking hated it. So he kept his distance, hoped she would back off, let him get through this his way.
But then came that night at the beach bonfire, when everything changed.
He probably shouldnât have gone, but he needed to get out and feel normal againâeven if that just implied showing up and pretending, he was fine. He dragged you along, flashing that cocky grin you could see right through, but you followed anyway, probably just to keep an eye on him. He could feel itâthe way you were watching him, worried as hell, that just made him want another drink.
Half the people were staring, too. Waiting to see if he was gonna go off, if he was back to the same volatile Rafe he used to be, the one they loved watching spin out. And just when he thought he could ignore it, some random pogue, scruffy, half-drunk, threw out a comment loud enough for the whole group around him to hear.
âGuess Ward Cameron finally found some gold he couldnât buy his way out of, huh? What was he thinking, running off to some country where people donât just take bribes? Practically killed himself.â
It took everything in him not to lunge right there, but he was too plastered to keep the anger off his face. He pushed his way over to the guy, hands clenched into fists.
âYou got something you want to say to my fuckinâ face?â
The guy shrugged, muttering something under his breath, people were looking now, everyone watching to see if he was finally going to give them a show.
Before he knew what he was doing, he was shoving him back, hard enough that the dude stumbled, beer splashing out of his cup. The crowd around them stirred, murmurs, but nobody did a thingâthey were just staring, waiting to see the blood spill. He felt tempted to hurt someone, felt that cameron fury crawling up his throat.
It didnât matter that he was twice as drunk as he should be; all that mattered was the way his fatherâs name was rolling off this nobodyâs lips.
He felt you grab his arm, long nails digging hard enough to pull him back, he jerked his shoulder, trying to shake you off, but you werenât letting go.
âYouâre gonna waste your time on him?â
Rafe gritted his teeth, but you didnât give him a chance to argue. You hauled him back, forcing him away from the guy, who was still standing there with that smug look plastered on his face.Â
âGet out. Now,â you urged him, voice calm but with the tone that even he didnât want to test. He glared at you, mouth opening to argue, but you didnât let him get a word in. âRafe. Now.â
You were mad at him.
It was enough to knock some sense into him, and he let you reel him away, but not before you turned back.
âAnd you,â you called out, enough to silence the chatter around you. âKeep your fuckinâ mouth shut.âÂ
There was no bluff, no hesitation, and Rafe watched as the pogueâs smug expression dropped instantly, eyes widening as he realized you were dead serious, your familyâs name always had an impact around town, old money and all.
As you dragged him to the car, he muttered that he didnât need you playing bodyguard, but you ignored it, taking him out of the spotlight he hated but couldnât seem to avoid.
His head was spinning, his blood boiling, and he couldnât even look at you, not with how angry he felt.
By the time you pulled up to his house, you got out, guiding him inside with that hard, that silent determination he both hated and admired in you.Â
You were there, right behind him with that look on your faceâangry, disappointed, like he was missing something big, as if he was the one who didnât get it.
He stumbled into the bathroom, holding himself against the sink, and before he could even catch his breath, you turned on the faucet and splashed cold water in his face. He jerked back, sputtering, wiping it with the back of his hand. When he looked at you, his anger burned again.
âWhat the fuck is your problem?â he snapped.
âMy problem?â you scoffed head already shaking, âAre you serious?â
âYou donât get it,â he growled, barely controlling the rage, the shameâeverything. âYou donât know a fuckinâ thing about him. I had the right to defend him.â
You took a step forward, finger pointed at your chest, âDonât I? Because I remember standing in this very house, watching him tear you down every chance he got. Youâre so busy mourning this man who treated you like shit, that youâre pushing the people who care about you away. Itâs not just me. Itâs everyone.â
Rafe laughed bitterly, the sound humorless. âOh, here we go,â he muttered, rolling his eyes as he turned back to the sink, gripping the edge hard enough to make his knuckles turn white.
âDonât you dare roll your fucking eyes at me,â you retaliated, stepping up beside him. âI stood by you through all of it, Iâm not gonna stand here and watch you kill yourself because of him. Heâs the reason you felt like you had to be so perfect all the time, why youâre always trying to prove yourself to people who donât deserve it. And now heâs gone, and you still canât see it. Youâre still trying to be good enough for him!â
He didnât look at you, didnât want to see the indignationâor worse, the pityâin your eyes.
âJust stop,â he muttered, but you were past listening.
âNo, I wonât stop. I canât. I canât keep watching you do this to yourself again. Youâre better than this.â
He suddenly pushed himself away from the sink, and turned to face you, his blue eyes practically black with a hurt that was older and deeper than either of you could touch.
âYou donât get to stand there and tell me what I deserve.â
âI know what you deserve.âÂ
He scoffed, rolling his eyes again, though his face had gone a shade paler. âYou think you know everything, donât you?â he sneered. âThink you know whatâs best for me? Get off your high horse.â
âYouâre damn fucking right I know better than you do, Iâm not the one whoâs drowning every night in some pathetic tribute to a man who wouldnât piss on you if you were on fire.â
He could feel it now, the bitterness youâd been hiding for weeks. It wasnât just about him drinking himself stupid. It was everythingâevery fucking thing youâd been ignoring, it had festered between you two while you pretended things were okay.
âYouâre the one whoâs just tired of me, of everything that comes with me.â
You took a step back, eyes narrowing, but you didnât flinch.
âWhat?â Your rage momentarily dialed down, the sound gurgling, âYou think Iâm tired of you? Iâve been here this whole time, trying to make you see the truth, but you wonât even look at me. You wonât let me in. Youâre too fucking blind to notice.â
His breath was shaky, too fast, but he didnât care. âSo now Iâm blind, huh? I didnât see you sneaking out the door when I needed you? I didnât notice how you pulled back, how you stopped giving a fuck about me? Youâre just waiting for me to give you an excuse to leave.â
You opened your mouth to argue, but he wasnât done.
âYou donât get it! I didnât need you to fix me, I needed someone to stay. But instead, youâ" His voice cracked, the anger choking him up, "Instead, you started to make me feel like I was a b-burden. Some mess you had to clean up. How am I supposed to deal with that, huh?"
You were shaking your head, your eyes had already been filled with tears, your chest suffocating.
âIâve been here. Iâve been standing right next to you, waiting for you to pull your shit together. I didnât walk away. You did.
His stomach churned, as if youâd taken every inch of space in his chest and twisted it, just for fun. The worst part was, he couldnât even argue with you. Not really. He had been so wrapped up in his own shit, so obsessed with keeping everyone out, that he hadnât even seen how far youâd already gone.
âDonât. Donât you dare try to make this about me,â he spat, the words ugly in his mouth, it felt like they were scraping their way out of him. âYou donât get to make me the villain in your story just because youâre tired of playing my fucking hero.â
âIâm not trying to play the hero!â you screamed, stepping closer, your eyes were cold. âIâm trying to help you see that you have to fix this. Not me. Not anyone else. But you. And if youâre so fucking broken you canât see that, then maybe you really donât need me.â
The silence that followed was thick, suffocating. Rafe could feel his heart racing, that agonizing coil in his chest, but he couldnât stop.
âMaybe youâre right,â he said, voice quieter, but just as venomous.
He turned his back on you, walking to the door. The sound of his boots clamped against the wood floor like a countdown.
âMaybe I donât. Grab your shit and go.â
"Donât you fuckingâ" you snarled, but he was already moving, grabbing your jacket off the hook by the door and throwing it your way, âYou know what? Fine. Maybe I will.â You shoved that stupid thing on, hands shaking as you yanked the zipper up. âDonât come running back in two days like you always do. Donât come crawling back.â
Rafe paused, hand on the doorknob, his jaw clenched so hard you could see the muscle ticking.
He didnât turn around, didnât look back at you.
âI donât need you to feel sorry for me.â
âGood. Because I stopped feeling sorry for you a long time ago,â you replied sharply, every syllable punctuated with weeks of resentment. âWhat I feel now? Thatâs just disappointment.â
You watched his shoulders lock up; his whole body wound so tight it was like he was one wrong look away from completely losing it. He didnât turn around either, even as you slipped out the door, but he knew.
That was it.
Two moths later, almost three, he was standing in front of the ER pacing like a complete fucking idiot after you passed out in his arms earlier.
Heâd told himself heâd stay away, make it easy for both of you.Â
That shitty plan had gone down the drain once he saw you speed away at that party with absolutely no regard for your safety or Topperâs. Heâd seen that wild look in your eyes beforeâthe one that said you were about to burn it all down. Or when your dadâs gala came around, and he couldnât sleep properly knowing he wasnât going to be there that year, knowing how you spiraled every time you had to step on that stage.
He had stupidly thought that maybe, one day, you two could still be friends. But today? That shit blew up in his face, for the second time in the span of a week.
He forgot what you could invoke in him when you were standing merely an inch away. He promised himself that heâd moved on, forced to consider that the love of his life might not be someone he could spend his lifetime with. Maybe you werenât meant for each other.
But how the fuck was he supposed to act when the girl who had been everything to him was hurting?Â
No, no, no.
Sofia was what he needed.
Someone who didnât know shit about his past, who didnât ask questions he didnât want to answer. She hadnât seen him the way you had, hadnât been there through every drunken rant and punch heâd thrown at the wall or someoneâs face, hadnât heard him rail against his dad or drag himself back from one of his darkest nights.Â
She hadnât called him a fucking idiot when he chose to throw his fatherâs ashes on the ocean. She wasnât going to call him a coward for it. She didnât have a clue about any of it, and that was supposed to be what he wanted.
He looked up at the ER doors for the millionth time in the past hour, his fingers clenched around his jeep keys so tight they left marks on his hand.
It was over between you two. Heâd make sure to keep the fucking distance, two whole months. If he didnât give you enough closure, youâd hate him faster and youâd both get over it.Â
So why the fuck was he about to set the whole hospital on fire as he watched John Bâs beat up twinkie pull up to the parking area? It shouldnât have surprised him, but it did.Â
Of course youâd call her, his own sisterâhis father's favorite.
Sarah had always been the golden child, Wardâs little angel who could do no wrong, while he was the family screw-up. Even now, youâd picked her, just like Ward would have.Â
He didnât think before he moved, closing the distance between him them in seconds.Â
âWhat the fuck are you doing here?â He barked right up in her face, daring her to explain herself.
Sarah didnât back down, though. She just looked up at him with that same cool, level expression she always had whenever he tried to get a rise out of her.Â
âIâm here because she called me.â
âShe called you?â He scoffed, eyebrows pulling together in disbelief. âYou? She called you?â He took a step closer, âSo what, youâre her savior now or some shit? Why the hell would she call you if Iâm right here?â His eyes narrowed, searching her face like he couldnât believe it. âAre you kidding me?â
Sarah threw her hands up, a look of pure exasperation on her face.
âAre you dense, Rafe? Youâre with someone else! Why would she want the guy who broke her heart to drive her home?â
He blinked, thrown off. âI broke her heart? She broke mine!â He laughed, but it was harsh, bitter. âI did us a favor. We were justââ
âOh, right. A favor?â Sarah cut in, voice dripping with sarcasm. âThat why youâre pacing out here like a goddamn lunatic?â
âGo away. Iâm driving her home.â
She stepped closer, her voice steely as she looked him dead in the eye.
âNo. She called me, she wants me here. Not you. So do yourself a real favor and go home before you do something even more stupid.â
A breathless chuckle escaped his lips, âShe already hates me, Sarah. Whatâs the fucking harm, huh?â He threw his arms out, as if daring her to come up with an answer that would hurt less. âWhatâs one more screw-up on top of everything else?â
âYouâre real dumb if you believe that. But if you wanna make it worse, then by all means, go ahead. Youâll just prove her right.â
He stayed rooted in place, chest heaving, the conflict ripping him to pieces. His hands shook, his throat tight with words he couldnât even begin to understand.
But Sarah had already turned her back on him, heading toward the entrance.
âWalk away,â she warned him, looking over her shoulder, âThatâs the only thing left for you to do right now.â
Rafe didnât know why the fuck he listened to her.
It was as if his body had already made that decision for him, understanding that if he didnât leave right then, heâd end up doing something stupidâsomething even more fucked up than what heâd already done. His tongue was locked in place, a curse on the tip of his pursed lips, but it never came.Â
His feet wouldnât move, his hands stayed at his sides, and that tightness in his throat wouldnât let him get a single word out, not one that would make any fucking sense. He hated that. Hated that you still had this kind of control over him.
Hated that he justâŚfelt like something was wrong.
You hadnât been this frantic, so impulsive since he had to take you home after your sister passed. He didnât want to remember that nightâyou damn near threw yourself out of his truck.
But he couldnât ignore the memory, the desperation on your face, the screams, the fight in his grip as he pulled you by your shirt back inside.
Heâd felt like he was holding on to something breaking apart in his hands, something he couldnât fix but couldnât let go of either. Heâd seen it again in your eyes when heâd caught you earlier at the beach clean-up, the way youâd tried to dodge his stare, voice cracking, legs wobbling when he mentioned the hospital.Â
Rafe still felt like heâd swallowed shattered pieces of glass every time he thought about you. And if he could just push it down, if he could just get through one fucking day without looking back, maybe heâd start to forget you.
His feet were glued to the hospital pavement, his heartbeat thundering in his ears. If you were about to crash, if this was anything like beforeâŚHe didnât know what the fuck he was going to do.
He had no reason to stay, youâd made it clear as day. He was supposed to be goneâout of your life for good. Youâd told him you didnât need him, he told you he didnât need you. So why the hell was he still standing here?Â
Perhaps because he remembered the last time heâd let you walk out, the way heâd watched you disappear, thinking he was doing the right thingâgiving you the clean end youâd both needed.
Maybe that made him sick to his stomach now, thinking of you in there with Sarah, telling his sister things you wouldnât say to him, letting her be the person he once was to you.
But youâd called her, not him. Youâd picked Sarah to be here, and that hurt like a bitch, but it was what heâd asked for, wasnât it?
This was what he deserved. He told you to grab your shit and go, forced you to leave because that was supposed to make it easier.
Heâd impulsively made his choice the minute heâd wrapped his arm around Sofia, pulling her close in front of everyone whoâd once known he was yours. Heâd talked himself into it. It was the right call, moving on was the only way to finally get you out of his system.Â
He was the one who decided itâd be easier to act like he forgot you than to actually try. He thought he could make it easyâpain-free.
Rafe pinched the bridge of his nose as he walked back toward his Jeep. He gripped the door handle so hard he could break it in half if he wanted to, feeling his knuckles strain.
If he let go, if he closed that door and stormed inside, heâd just be right back where he started.
He stared at his reflection in the window, his hardened face staring back. His pulse was pounding in his temples, his gut twisting and turning as he tried to bury it all six feet underâthe need to just go to you, to hold your hand or yell at you for making him care so fucking much.
He finally released the death grip he had on the door handle, forcing his fingers to relax, his knuckles still throbbing. He slid into the driverâs seat, the cold leather youâd help him choose, mocking at his skin as he slammed the door shut.
With a quick flick of his wrist, he threw the car into drive, the tires screeching as he peeled out of the parking lot.
He drove like he was being hunted down. He wanted to get as far away from that place as possible, praying the miles between him and you would stop the churning inside him.Â
Youâll just prove her right.
He hated her for saying it, hated Sarah for knowing exactly what buttons to push.Â
As he rounded a curve, his headlights swept across Topperâs house. Rafe cut the engine and stalked toward the backyard. Topperâs sprawled-out form on a reclining chair, arms crossed over his chest, sunglasses somehow still on evenly.
He stomped up and smacked the end of his chair.
"Wake the fuck up."
He jolted, nearly tumbling off the chair, ripping his sunglasses off and squinting up at him. âJesus fucking christ, dude, ever heard of calling ahead?â
But Rafe didnât answer. He just paced, hands in his growing hair, digging into his scalp like he could rip the frustration out of his skull. Topper sighed, propping himself up on one elbow, he didnât even look at him, just kept muttering to himself, biting his lip, pacing.
âWhat the hell happened?â
Finally, he stopped, âI need you to find out whatâs wrong with your cousin,â he muttered, not wanting to admit he cared enough to ask.
Topper blinked, brow furrowing. âWhat do you mean, whatâs wrong with her?â
Rafe only shook his head, hands on his hips as he stared at the ground. âI donât know, okay? She justâŚsheâs acting off. And I canâtâIâm not supposed to care, Top. Iâm not. Iâm with Sofia now, alright? But sheâs stillâŚâ His voice trailed off, as he scrubbed a hand down it.
Topper tilted his head, eyeing him knowingly.
âRight, yeah, whatever you say. Iâll figure it out.â
If Sarah Cameron didnât walk through that hospital door within the next three minutes, youâd lose all the courage youâd summoned over the last hours. Or was it just an hour? You werenât sure how long youâd been lying there, the IV needle taped uncomfortably into your arm.Â
Your fingers curled into the thin blanket draped over you, and you wishedâdesperatelyâthat you didnât feel soâŚempty.
Ten minutes later, she strode in with a glance at the door, as if she wasnât sure if sheâd be able to get there on time. The relief on her face when she saw you was reassuring but it only made the confusion in your chest heavier.
She was so different from Rafe, yet still looked so much like him. She sat in the chair by the bed, eyes scanning your face like she was trying to gauge just how bad it was.
âHi.â
You swallowed, blinking up at the ceiling to keep the tears at bay.
âThanks for coming.âÂ
âOf course,â She reached for your hand where it lay on top of the blanket, hesitating for a split second before giving it a reassuring squeeze. âYou okay?âÂ
You felt a laugh bubble up, âNot even a little.â
She let out a small breath and nodded, squeezing your hand again. âI figured,â she said quietly, and you appreciated that she didnât pretend to have some miracle answer, âI made him leave.â
Sheâd made him leave.
You could imagine his face distorted with anger.
You wondered if heâd put up a fight or if heâd just walked away,  giving in to his sister in that infuriating, self-pitying silence heâd perfected.
You werenât going to ask, the less you knew, the better.
âGood.â You were relieved, but it felt bittersweet, âI didnât want him here.âÂ
Except your voice shook, like it simply had to let her know you were lying.
Youâd been telling yourself for so long that you didnât need himâthat you didnât want him anywhere near you. But the second you pictured him there, waiting⌠God, you hated yourself.
Hated that tiny, pathetic part of you that still wanted him to care, even if it was just a sliver of anything that wasnât anger or flat-out ignoring you.
âHe threw a hissy fight, but donât worry. Heâs not coming back.â
You nodded, half in agreement, half in frustration, âHe never listens.â
âEspecially when it matters,â Sarah added, rolling her eyes. âI swear, sometimes I think he just likes to make things worse for himself. And everyone else.â
You recalled the sound of his footsteps trailing yours earlier, the way his hand had hovered near you when you swayed, the wild look on his face when you told him to back off. He had seemedâŚhurt. Like he wanted to fix something heâd already smashed to pieces.
âI donât want to talk about him.â
She respected thatâshe wouldnât insist. There was a lot to unpack when it came to Rafe, but you didnât need to go there right now. She could tell.
"Okay. Do you want to tell me why you called me and not Topper?â
There wasnât any judgment in her toneâjust plain curiosity, confusion. And you couldnât blame her. If the roles were reversed, youâd be asking the same thing.
You had to bite your lips to avoid crying for the hundredth time that day. You hadnât planned on telling someone the biggest secret of your life in a public space, or after nearly having a mental breakdown.
Not like this, with the IV in your arm.
"Iâ" you started, the words tangled in your throat. "I don't trust him," you admitted quietly, "I donât trust him with this.â
This.
You turned your head to look out the window, the late afternoon light pouring through the blinds, but it never touched the void you felt inside.Â
âHeâs too close. He wouldnât get it. I needed someone who could just⌠not be involved, you know? I meanâYouâre still his sister butââ
Sarahâs already frowning, interrupting your pitying party, âSweet girl, you donât have to explain your reasons to me. Iâm listening either way. I donât know whatâs going on, but I get it, I understand why youâd want to keep him out of this.â
âYouâre the only one I can trust to keep this a secret,â you confessed, âIf anyone finds outâif Rafe finds outâitâs over. Iâm not ready for that.â
A shadow crossed Sarahâs face, her lips pressing into a thin line. She didnât ask questions about what you meantâabout how Rafe had ruined things before. She didnât need to.Â
âI wonât tell him,â Sarah promised, her grip tightening on your skin. âItâs safe with me. Iâve got your back.â
You closed your eyes, breathing out slowly.
This was hard, harder than anything youâd ever done before, and that was saying something considering all the shit you went through when your family died. She had no idea what you were about to say, and you couldnât help but wonder if it would change everything between youâbetween you and her, and you and everyone else.
"Sara, Iâ" The truth choked you once more, cutting you off. You couldnât breathe.
Your chest felt vacant, something was missing, something that you didnât know how to fix, but you had to say it. It was the only way out.
âAre youâ" she started to ask, but you quickly shook your head. You could hear the hesitation in her voice.
"Just⌠just let me tell you,â You begged, pushing the words out before you lost them. âI-Iâm pregnant,â you finally blurted out, as if confessing it all at once could make it easier.
But it didnât.Â
You didnât dare look at Sarah right away.Â
Your eyes were stuck on the ceiling, blinking rapidly, you didnât need her to see how much this was breaking you or how terrified you were. You could feel her eyes on you now, and your hand clenched around the blanket, your knuckles white from the lack of circulation.Â
Then, slowly, Sarah squeezed your hand again, she was giving you a moment to breathe, even though you didnât feel like you deserved it.
âRafeâs?â she asked quietly, confirming what you already knew she understood.
You nodded, not needing to say it aloud; she could sense the truth in the way your chest hitched, how you couldnât bring yourself to meet her eyes.
âGod,â Sarah breathed out, "And you... you want to...?"
You nodded again. She wasnât asking if you were sure; you could hear it in the hesitation of her question. She was asking if you were ready to make the choice.
âI donât want this,â you choked out, the tears finally breaking free. âI canât have it, Sarah. I canât. Iâm not ready for that. Iâm not sure I even know what I want anymore," you spit the doubt out with the brokenness you felt, wiping the traitorous tear that traced down your cheek. "I donât know what to do."
âIâm here. Whatever you need, however you need to do thisâIâm here,â she promised, making sure you wouldnât float away.
âI canât⌠I just⌠I donât want him to find out,â you managed between shallow breaths. âIf he knew, heâd⌠I donât know what heâd do. Maybe itâs stupid, but I donât want him to look at me like⌠like he owns me something.â
Sarah nodded, not a hint of judgment on her face, âHe wonât know a thing from me, I swear. Heâll never have any say in this, not unless you want him to. This is your choice, no one elseâs.â
You didnât know youâd been holding your breath, but it came out all at once in a shaky exhale.
âThank you. I just⌠I didnât know who else I could ask.â
âHey,â she said, her voice gentle. âThis? This is exactly what Iâm here for. Iâve got you, no matter what.â
The empathy there, the way she held space for all your broken pieces.
âNew Mexicoâs clinic rules⌠they wonât let me go through with it alone. They said I need someone with me.â You took a shaky breath. âI canât imagine anyone else but you there, Sarah.â
âThen Iâll be there,â she said, without hesitation. âIâll get the tickets, weâll go together. And if you feel like breaking down, then break down, because you donât have to keep any of this in anymore.â
Her words broke something in you that had been holding everything so tightly. The relief, the gratitudeâ âYouâre really⌠Youâd really do this for me?â
âOf course,â she murmured, pulling you close so your head rested against her shoulder, her fingers brushing through your hair soothingly. âSweet girl, Iâd do this a thousand times over.â
âI meanâheâs your brother. I donât want to mess things up between you two even more.â
She sighed, giving a small, sad smile, almost like sheâd been waiting for you to say that. âYou think heâs my priority right now? Donât you worry about me and him, we always figure it out. Trust me, Iâm used to it.â
âHe might hate me for this. And if he takes that out on youâŚâ You couldnât finish.
âListen to me,â she sighed, âIâm here because I care about you. Rafe and I, weâll always have our issuesâheâs stubborn, and he thinks he has all the answers. But thatâs our problem. Heâll never have a say over what I do or who Iâm there for. Especially not with this.â
You swallowed hard, âI donât want you to regret it.â
She gave a wry laugh, brushing a piece of hair back from your face. âYou donât have to protect me from him, remember? Heâs my brother, yeah, I love him despite all our shit, but Iâm not here for him right now. Iâm here for you.â
âYouâre sure?â you asked, the question a whisper, almost childlike. You were afraid of the answer, terrified sheâd eventually pull away.
âOf course Iâm sure,â she replied, tilting your chin so youâd meet her eyes. âWhateverâs going on with Rafe will figure itself outâBut right now, you need someone whoâs all in, no strings, no doubts. Thatâs me. You focus on you. Iâll handle him.â
You looked down at your hands, fidgeting with the edge of the blanket, âI donât think he loves me anymore,â you admitted, almost hoping she wouldnât hear it, âI was so mean when your dad died.â
When you finally looked up, Sarah was watching you with a sad smile, one that made your heart hurt in both comfort and ache. âYou really believe that?â she asked quietly, and you could hear the disbelief in her voice as if it was so obvious to her, something you couldnât see.
You nodded, swallowing down the sting in your throat. âHe doesnât want me, not really. HeâsâŚhe pulled away. Like heâd rather hate me than be close to me. Heâs with her.âÂ
The words tasted bitter, and made you want to hurt him twice as bad, but there was finally some relief in saying it out loud.
She sighed, looking down for a second, almost like she was thinking how to tell you something that hurt her to admit.
âI donât think thatâs the problem,â she murmured, with a knowing sadness. âI think the problem is that you two will never stop loving each other. Heâs still hurting from dadâs passing, heâs angry because he doesnât know how to stop loving you. And youâyouâre here, angry that he loved my dad so much, hurt that he left, trying to protect me from him, still worrying about me when you should be focusing on yourself. Youâre scared he doesnât care anymore, and heâs scared you donât need him at all."
Your lips quivered, your heart about to leap out of your throat, your tongue darted out, briefly brushing your lips.
You werenât sure you should say it out loud, but maybe you had to. âWeâre better off without each other, arenât we?â
âYouâre allowed to be someone without him, and youâre allowed to find out who that is.â
You were slipping, falling back into that spiral of guilt and shame, the one that told you maybe this was all you were good for. Maybe Rafe was right to break things off, perhaps heâd realized that, in the end, you werenât worth fighting for.
And shit, you hated yourself for still caring. For still wanting him to want you, even though you knew it was poison. Even though you knew that being with him, needing him, was only dragging you both down.
âThank you.â
And as you sat there, in the stillness of that room, with the sunlight dimming outside, you felt that maybe someday youâd be able to trust yourself too. To believe that you were worth more than the heartache youâd come to accept as your own.

⢠series masterlist
The game was on, and Carter wasnât one to go down without a fight.
You however, were much less invested in her scheme to set you up with Tom, already feeling tired and confused after 24-hours of this little reunion trip. You laid in bed for quite a while replaying the almost-moment youâd had with Rafe in the kitchen in your head before taking a long, dreamless nap. It was the smell of the barbeque wafting through your bedroom window that woke you up. You threw your hair up in a bun, too groggy to care about putting any more effort into your appearance.
As you reached for the handle, you heard two hushed voices arguing behind your bedroom door. You opened it slowly to reveal Carter and Topper facing each other, both with their arms crossed as they carried on a heated whisper-argument.
âWhat are you even doing up here Topper?â Carter demanded.
âI donât know, what are you doing up here Carter? Trying to get a leg up?â Topper snapped back, towering over her in height yet still somehow looking small under her glare.
They were so locked in on each other that neither of them had even noticed your appearance.
âUm, hi,â you waved your hand between their faces to get their attention. âCan I help you?â
They looked at you, startled as their arms fell and stances softened. Carter eyed your outfit up and down, trying to hide her distaste at your choice of leggings and a t-shirt.
âWell, I donât know what heâs doing up here but I came to see if you needed help getting ready,â Carter replied.
âI am ready,â you said, eyeing her suspiciously.
âYouâre, uh,â Topper scratched the back of his head uncomfortably. âIs that what youâre wearing?â
You squinted at him, you could understand Carter critiquing your outfit, knowing she was trying to set you up with Tom, but what stake did Topper have in your outfit choice?
âWeâre literally just going downstairs,â you countered.
âMaybe throw on something a little nicer,â Carter urged gently.
âOkay, fine,â you gave in. âYou two are being so weird today.â
Topper gave you a thumbs up as you closed the door in their faces.
A few minutes later you reemerged in a new outfit, a crocheted halter top and some cut-offs. You had let your hair down and ran a brush through it, dabbed on some mascara and lipgloss. It was the maximum amount of effort you were willing to put into a big night out in the backyard.
Despite everyoneâs relentless teasing, Topper actually was a pretty good cook. The food was great and everyone thanked you, Rafe, and Tom for going out to get it.
âTom paid!â you announced. âSo everyone make sure to be really nice to him or he wonât bankroll us anymore.â
You smiled at Tom, who grinned back and waved you off in joking modesty. You let your eyes linger as he leaned over the firepit on the other side of the sprawling patio, skillfully stacking the wood before lighting a match and holding it under. He crouched low to blow gently on the kindling, causing the fire to roar to life. You could see a sliver of his toned lower back peeking out from his shirt as he reached for another log, dropping it straight into his newly sparked flame with a bare hand. The whole thing was unbelievably attractive.
The only thing better was the stoney look on Rafeâs face when you caught his eye, realizing heâd noticed the way you were looking at Tom like you wanted to have him for dessert. Good.Â
Playing and replaying the scene from the kitchen in your head all afternoon, you came downstairs determined to freeze Rafe out. Sure, he remembered your favorite candy and maybe almost even apologized, but it wasnât enough to erase the sting you felt when he pulled away from you like you had the plague as soon as anyone else entered the room.
After dinner, you were perched on the railing of the porch, sipping something strong and chatting with Carter and her childhood best friend, Maddie.
Maddie was nice enough, the Kook academy prom queen two years in a row, but she had never shown much interest in you. Until you showed up here looking much more instagram-worthy than you had in high school.
âSo, omg,â Maddie started, playing with a strand of your hair like you were the closest of friends. âWhen are you gonna drop the workout routine? You look gorg.â
Never once had one of Carterâs friends complimented your looks.Â
âThanks,â you grinned, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. âI play a lot of volleyball and jog a little.â
âWell itâs working!â Kelce hollered from across the porch, already wobbling slightly from his inebriation.
There it was again, your blush, always showing up at the least opportune times. All eyes were on you, such open talk about your body making your skin crawl with self-consciousness. You looked over the railing to the sand a few feet down, wondering how badly the jump would hurt.
As always, knowing you better than anyone, Carter felt like she could read your mind. Protectiveness roared in her chest, she set her hand over yours to silently tell you she understood before turning to the party and announcing, âokay, weâre playing a game! Everyone around the fire pit!â
No one argued with her wishes, they never did. The group gathered around the bonfire, each with a full drink in hand as Carter unnecessarily explained the rules to never have I ever as if this same group hadnât played it a hundred times in high school.Â
You appreciated Carter moving the attention off of you, but clearly she didnât know this was your least favorite game in the world. The second the name of the game came out of her mouth, your heart dropped to your stomach, hit with memories of sitting off to the side while her friends played, all of your fingers embarrassingly still up, revealing you had done nothing interesting or scandalous in your life.
Sure, youâd definitely added a few notches to your belt since then, but you knew these people and had no doubt you were still way behind. The sad thing is you didnât even care, but you knew they would and you couldnât help that nagging desire to prove that you were just as cool as them. You sighed as you settled in your chair next to Carter, frustrated that just as you were starting to feel somewhat normal, you were transported right back to your loneliest days.
Carter went first, ânever have I everrrâŚshoplifted.â
Sabrina took a giggly sip from her solo cup.
âIsnât your dadâs networth like a billion dollars?â Kelce asked.
âYes, but he never wouldâve bought me those red panties, so I took âem,â she winked at him, and he scooted his chair closer to her.
Everyone else still had all ten fingers up, making you think maybe this wouldnât be so bad after all.Â
But your relief didnât last long. One by one they went around the circle, revealing each otherâs secrets and leaving you with ten fingers up.
âNever have I ever done a body shot.â Your fingers stayed up.
âNever have I ever kissed someone of the same sex.â Your fingers stayed up.
âNever have I ever hooked up in a public place.â Your fingers stayed up.Â
As the group got tipsier, the revelations got dirtier. You were sure some of them were lying and there was some temptation for you to put a finger down as a lie too just to level the playing field, but that was such teenage bullshit. You might not have as a high of a body count as some of them, but you still had your pride.Â
The blood rushed from you face when Maddie said, ânever have I ever been with two people at onceâ and Rafe put his last finger down, smirking as he finished off his beer.
A few more rounds passed and everyone else had put at least a couple fingers down while you still hadnât done a single one of the things listed. You chewed on your lip, wondering how early was too early to excuse yourself to go to bed.
You were about to make a break for it, when a now sloppily drunk Sabrina pointed at you and slurred, âaww bambiâs still got ten!â
Bambi was another one of the many teasing nicknames theyâd called you in high school, and it might just be your least favorite.Â
âYouâre still such a good girl,â Sabrina jibed.Â
She mustâve been beyond wasted. She wasnât necessarily nice, but she wasnât usually this much of a bitch.
Your breaths got short, the anxiety erupting like fireworks in your chest. You could feel Carterâs mind spinning next to you, trying to come up with some way to defend you, but another voice beat her to it.
âWell,â Rafe said, drawing all eyes off of you and across the firepit towards him. âNever have I ever gotten so crossfaded at a boneyard party that I pissed my pants in someone elseâs truck.â
He shot Sabrina a vindictive smile.
âRafe!â She protested. âYou said you wouldnât tell anyone!âÂ
At her admission, everyone broke out into laughter, aimed at her.
âI didnât tell anyone,â Rafe chuckled, âyou just did.â
âBruhh,â Kelce hollered. âThatâs nasty!â
Sabrina went red, completely humiliated. You tried to be a girlâs girl, but after years of her teasing and making you feel like a loser, you couldnât help but join in the laughter at her expense.Â
As she emptied her cup spitefully, you caught Rafeâs gaze across the fire, the air between you wavy with the flameâs heat. He smiled a crooked, satisfied smile at you, and you mouthed âthank you.â He gave you a reassuring wink and your stomach did cartwheels.Â
Carter straightened in her lawn chair next to you, kicking herself for giving Rafe the chance to save you before she could.
âIâve got one!â she announced, and the crowd hushed to hear their queen. âNever have I ever skinny dipped in the campus fountain and got caught by campus security but successfully flirted my way out of a citation and ended up getting the copâs number.â
Everyone looked around the circle quizzically, wondering who that incredibly specific anecdote was aimed at.
âNo fucking way!â Topper shouted when he saw you put down your pinky finger with a bashful smile.
Topper and Kelce whooped, and the girls all gave you impressed looks.
âOkay baddie!â Maddie gasped. âWas he cute? Did you call him?â
âI mean he wasnât not cute,â you mused, taking the obligatory sip of your drink. âWe hung out a few times.â
âSo does that mean youâre into handcuffs now orrrâŚâ Kelce chimed in.
âOops, I put the wrong fingers down,â you lifted your hand and theatrically put all down except your middle finger, aiming it at Kelce.
The crowd erupted with laughs and amused ohhhhâs. Even Rafe was smiling, and you couldnât help but wish you knew what he was thinking, noticing his soft eyes on you as you bantered with his friends, all attention on you. This time, you werenât blushing, you were just enjoying yourself. It felt so nice to have such a naturally fun and easy moment, but it was short lived.
âNever have I ever,â Sabrina interrupted, hiccuping. âFailed an entire semester of college.â
The crowd fell silent once again, no one daring to bring their eyes to Rafe, the clear target of her comeback. He just rolled his eyes, leaning back in his chair nonchalantly, like it didnât bother him at all. But you could see the hint of shame in his eyes, a rare glimpse of vulnerability hidden under his tough facade. You used to spend so much of your time digging for those deeper layers that it was easy for you to pick up on them when they rose to the surface, even if it was just for a second.
Maybe you should let him flounder, leave him hanging like heâd done to you so many times before. But tonight, for the first time ever, he had jumped in to defend you, and maybe one act of kindness wouldnât kill you.
âFuck this game. Topper, didnât you say something earlier about a beer pong tournament?â You prompted him, hoping desperately heâd see what you were trying to do and play along.
Topper looked confused at first, so you smiled tightly and flicked your eyes to Rafe and back as quickly as possible, urging him to understand.
Ever the king of subtlety, Topperâs eyes went wide as he mouthed âohhhh!âÂ
Rafe saw the whole thing.
âBeer pong! Yes!â Topper said, excited to finally be in the loop. âLetâs do it!â
âI wanna play!â Sabrina stood quickly from her chair, immediately tripping over her own feet.
âWoah,â Carter caught her and held her up with some effort, Sabrina so far gone she couldnât even use her legs. âI think youâve had enough fun for tonight.â
Carter stabilized Sabrina and guided her towards the house. You knew she was pissed at Sabrina for picking on you, but Carter would never leave a drunk girl to stumble around a party by herself. She looked at you apologetically, but you nodded to let her know you were fine.
After they disappeared into the house, Topper and Kelce got to work clearing the long outdoor dining table for beer pong, filling cups and placing them with great attention to detail. You chuckled at the way they were arguing over correct cup spacing and fill levels as you reached down into the cooler for another drink. When you stood, Tom appeared by your side.
âI didnât realize I was sharing a house with a criminal,â he drawled, mouth quirked with a crooked smile.
âOh yeah,â you played along, popping the top of your drink. âIâm wanted in four states and Puerto Rico.â
âAnd Puerto Rico, wow,â he leaned his arm against the porch rail, his body angling towards yours in a way that made your skin prick with goosebumps. âI need to hear that story.â
âIâd tell you,â you lowered your voice and lifted your mouth towards his ear to whisper. âBut then Iâd have to kill you.â
âYouâre in that deep, huh?â He placed his other hand on the railing on the other side of you, effectively caging you in, though he held himself back far enough to give you some space. You didnât want space, though, the enticing scent of whiskey and the smoke from the fire drawing you to him.
âMhm,â you leaned in so your chests were almost touching, a smile tugging his full lips when he noticed the way you intentionally closed the space between you. âIf you thought the campus fountain story was badâŚâ
âI didnât think it was bad,â he shook his head.
âNo?â You grinned, eager to see where he was going with this.
âNot bad, kind of hot, but not bad,â he confessed.
âOnly kind of?â You furrowed your brow in mock offense.
He broke into a smile and blushed, flustered as he said, âI mean, uhâŚâ
You giggled. His bashful, dimpled smile was so painfully cute you were suddenly seeing the value to Carterâs matchmaking plan.
The alcohol in your system mixed with the warmth radiating off of him made your body go hot, tingles shooting up your spine as his eyes fell to your lips. He was so damn pretty. Warm brown eyes and messy hair you wanted to tangle your fingers in.
Rafe grabbed the fire poker and busied himself by tending to the flames, which didnât really need it, considering Tom had built such a sturdy fire. The sound of your sweet giggles floating through the air as you flirted with Tom made him want to walk straight off the porch and into the ocean. Heâd surely put his lifelong friendship with Sabrina on the line, not to mention his own pride, to keep you from running away in embarrassment, and now Tom was reaping the rewards of his chivalry.Â
He remembered, though. Maybe you didnât think he did, but he remembered. The nights you sat in the corner, lonely, pining, and the go-to butt of his friendsâ stupid jokes. And heâd just sat by and let it happen, so many times. Itâs no wonder you were leaned up against someone else, sharing stories about a whole chapter of your life heâd missed. He only had himself to blame.
Once the table was set up, Topper turned and frowned at the way the group had split, you and Tom cozy in the corner while Rafe stood by the fire alone, shoulders tense. He needed to step up his Cupid game, like, now.
He clapped his hands loudly, voice booming as he announced to the party that it was time to play. The startling sound forced Tom away from you just as you were about to ask him if he wanted to walk down to the water. Topper pointed right at you and pronounced you would be on his team. You were going to protest before you remembered beer pong was your idea in the first place, your ruse to protect Rafe. You couldnât back out now.
Beer pong was another thing youâd added to your skill set in college. In high school, you were never asked to join when parties inevitably broke into a tournament. Instead youâd sit quietly and watch with hearts in your eyes as Rafe played with the competitiveness of an Olympian in a gold medal race.
He was known for his terrible sportsmanship, everyone expected a full tantrum if he didnât win. The same went for school sports, youâd spent every night after a rare loss up on the phone with him listening intently while he ranted about all the ways the refs were wrong or the umps were blind. At the time, you took it as an honor that you were the one he wanted to find solace in. Now, grown and mature, you saw it for what it really was; no one else wanted to listen to him bitch and moan, so you were just his only option.
âLetâs go, Little Carter!â Topper raised his hand for a high five as you approached the table.
âIf you call me that, Iâm not playing,â you left him hanging.
âMy bad, my bad,â he conceded.
You gave in and high fived him, stepping up to the table with your game face on. Kelce and Maddie stood across from you. They were both terrible shots, and you sunk every ball, but Topper was keeping them in the game with his many misses.Â
Topper was great at beer pong in high school and you were sure heâd had plenty of practice at U of F, so there was no reason he should be playing so horribly.
âDude, what the hell is up with you?â You scolded him after another throw that was way off.
âI dunno,â Topper said with an exaggerated drunken slur in his voice. âI think Iâm just too wasted to play. You might need another partner.â
Before you could mock him for his dramatics, he had called over to Rafe, who was sitting back in a lounge chair looking at his phone, anything to keep his eyes off of you.
âWhat?â He grumbled, eyes lifting from his screen and avoiding yours.
âNeed you to sub in for me,â Topper fake hiccupped and you rolled your eyes.
You were sure Rafe would see you were his proposed partner and pass on the opportunity, but then he and Topper had some kind of silent conversation with their eyes that you couldnât interpret, and Rafe stood from his chair.
âYou donât have to,â you offered as he stepped up and took the ball from Topper.
You hated that your instinct was to apologize for inconveniencing him. He shrugged and lined up his first shot.
âSomeoneâs gotta show âem how itâs done,â he said with an easy grin that made your heart beat a little faster.Â
If only your younger self could see how your night was progressing. Impressing everyone during never have I ever. Flirting with a gorgeous boy from another school. And now, Rafe smiling at you and acknowledging your presence in front of all these people, willingly agreeing to be your teammate. Sheâd have died and gone to heaven.
He had every right to be cocky; he was really good. And to his great surprise, so were you. You and Rafe made quick work of Kelce and Maddie, then Kelce and Jack, then Kelce and three more partners that tried to step up to the plate, Kelceâs aim worsening as he teetered on the edge of a blackout.
âWhen did you get so good at this?â Rafe asked you after a partcualrly skillful shot.
âI was always good at it,â you scoffed. âYou just never let me play.â
After that comment, Rafe was suddenly an extra encouraging teammate. Before each shot heâd pull you back, leaning down to whisper in your ear conspiratorially about which cup you should call, like an NFL coach rallying his quarterback.
âI canât hit the far corner, my aim isnât that good,â you said when he proposed the risky shot.Â
Self-doubt filled your face as you bit your lip, Rafe recognizing the nervous tick instantly.
âNah you got it!â he grabbed you by the shoulder and shook you playfully. âYou just gotta believe in yourself.âÂ
Despite yourself, you broke into a smile, making a feeble attempt to brush him away, though he could tell you didnât mean it.
âLetâs go slugger,â Rafe placed the ball in your hand and guided you into position by your shoulders. He stood behind you and leaned in to bring his mouth close to your ear. âYou got this.â
You loved it. You hated it. Your head swirled with conflicting thoughts, but when you sunk the ball with a flick of your wrist, they all faded.
âLetâs fucking gooo!â Rafe yelled.
He lifted his hand for a double high five and you stood on your tiptoes to reach. Your arms came down, but your hands were still in his.
âTold âya,â he said tenderly, smiling down at you as his large hands enveloped yours. âYou just gotta believe in yourself.â
Despite the alarms blaring in your head, telling you to run, you let it all linger. The deep sound of his voice in the air, his eyes on your lips, his rough hands folded in yours.
âOkay!â Carter chose that minute to emerge from the house after Sabrina finally fell asleep. âThatâs enough wins for yâall, time for some real competition.â
The sound of her voice snapped you out of the moment, and you pulled your hands away from Rafe quickly, nervous about all the eyes on you for the first time since youâd started playing.
âI need a partner,â Carter said, surveying the group on the patio. âHow aboutâŚâ
You rolled your eyes, knowing exactly where she was going with this show and wishing sheâd just fast forward to the end.
âTom?â She raised her eyebrows in his direction, as if it was a crazy idea she had just come up with. âDo you play?â
âI may have taken part in a tourney or two,â Tom said humbly.
âBullshit,â Kelce exclaimed, slumped in a chair as his head spun. âThis guy was the Alpha Tau champion all four years. Heâs got a plaque and everything.â
âDamn, I didnât know we had Alpha Tau royalty in our midst!â Carter bantered.
âJesus, enough with the fanfare, are you playing or not, dude?â Rafe snapped.
Carter eyed you, her lips twisted in a satisfied smirk. No one was surprised at Rafeâ gruffness, more than used to his competitive mean streak. It was not one of his more attractive qualities. The pull youâd just felt to him faltered a little at the reminder of this particular weakness. You were sure thatâs exactly what Carter was hoping for.
âAlright Iâm in,â Tom said, stepping up to the table and rolling up the sleeves of his sweater. âDonât say I didnât warn âya.â He winked at you.
âYeah, yeah, just call your shot, champ,â Rafe said.
The four of you reset the cups, not much work needing to be done on you and Rafeâs side of the table since almost no one had scored on you. As Tom lined up his first shot, he stuck his tongue out of the corner of his mouth in concentration, adjusting and readjusting his stance to get comfortable.
Rafe crossed his arms over his chest mumbling something along the lines of âthis fuckinâ guyâ and you couldnât help but smile, admittedly also kind of getting the ick from how seriously Tom was taking this.Â
Then he sunk every ball. After a few particularly good rounds, he made his third shot in a row, and Carter called âfire.â She handed him balls one after another like he was taking free throws, wiggling her eyebrows at you to make sure you were paying attention to his triumph.
You drank each cup obediently, ever the rule follower. After your fourth, you were getting so sick of the stale beer, you and Rafeâs cups had been sitting untouched all night and the cheap hops had soured significantly. When Tom sunk another one you grabbed the cup hesitantly, queasy, nearly gagging.
âItâs okay, I got it,â Rafe volunteered, grabbing the cup from you.
âYâall donât have to drink those if theyâre really that bad,â Tom offered, pausing his next shot when he noticed how disgusted you looked.
âI got it, man,â Rafe waved him off, holding his nose and shooting back the beer as quickly as possible. He dropped the empty cup with a grimace.
âWe can just call it a game,â Tom suggested, clearly feeling bad.
âDo you want to forfeit?â You asked Rafe, dropping your voice so Carter and Tom couldnât hear.
âWhat and just wave the white flag?â Rafe replied, eyebrows raised. âDo you?
Your lips spread in a slow smile, ânot a fucking chance.â
âAtta girl,â he nodded, returning his gaze to Tom. âWeâre no quitters, hit us again big guy.â
And he did, over and over, until there was only one cup left on your side of the table. As he prepped for his final shot, Rafe turned to you, a playful, tipsy smile on his face.
âWe had a good run,â He said, reaching out shake your hand. You took it with a smile.
When Tom and Carter won, high fiving each other in a loud celebration, all eyes fell to Rafe, waiting to see how heâd react to losing. You tensed, hoping his chipper attitude when you were winning would carry over into a graceful loss. But then he rounded the table, striding towards Tom, and you cringed in anticipation of a classic Rafe Cameron Temper Tantrum.
âOh boy,â Carter mumbled under her breath. âHere we go.â
But there was no blow up, just Rafe extending his hand to Tom, who took it with a friendly shake.
âGood game, man,â Rafe said.Â
âYeah, you too, dude,â Tom smiled, not realizing this show of sportsmanship was a historical first.
Rafe tilted his head in a friendly nod towards your sister, âCarter.â
âRafael,â she returned his sarcastic tone, purposefully using his least favorite nickname.
With that, Rafe walked away from the table, one last glance towards you as he returned to his seat by the fire. You watched him go, feeling sad not that you had lost, but that your fun night with Rafe had seemingly come to an end.
It was dizzying, your ever-changing emotional state, and you suspected it had very little to do with the beer. Thinking over all the events of the day gave you whiplash. One second you were about ready to ask Tom if he wanted to come back to your room, the next it felt like you and Rafe were finally sharing the moment youâd dreamt of for years. All the while, you werenât sure you actually wanted either of them, or if you even wanted to be here at all.
âWanna play again?â Carter asked, noticing the distracted look on your face.
âIâm good,â you smiled at her appreciatively, deciding youâd had enough excitement for one day. âI think Iâm probably just going to bed now.â
âAww, but itâs so early grandma,â Topper called over to you from the firepit.
You walked over to his chair and peched on the armrest.
âAh yes, another one of my favorite nicknames,â you joked. âNo oneâs called me that in four years.â
âAnother inside joke?â Tom inquired, joining the circle, he and Carter each grabbing a chair.
âIn high school, she was always the first to leave parties. Sheâd rather be at home in bed with a book by 9pm,â Topper explained to him.
You rose from his chair, eager to ditch this little trip down memory lane before it got too embarrassing. You almost made a clean escape, but then a very drunk Kelce decided to chime in.
âUnless Rafe asked her to stay,â he laughed. âThen sheâd be there allll night.â
Embarrassed doesnât even begin to cover it. Youâve been embarrassed a thousand times in your life, but this was something different. You looked down at your feet, not sure what you were supposed to do. No quick, face saving remark was coming to mind.
Carter smacked Kelce on the arm, while Topper shook his head with a disapproving, âdudeâŚâÂ
Your eyes drifted to Rafe, who was looking down at his hands uncomfortably. Whatever protective instinct that had inspired him to stand up for you earlier was clearly gone as he left you to drown in the painfully awkward silence.
âOh, were you twoâŚ?â Tom asked, pointing between you and Rafe quizzically.
âNope,â you told him with a stiff smile.
He looked like he was about to ask more, but caught on at the last second, reading in between the lines. There it was, the last person here who didnât know about your pathetic past was now caught up to speed. Yeah, youâd definitely had enough.
âKelce, youâre such an asshole,â Carter began reprimanding him.
âJust stop,â you urged her. âItâs fine, Iâm just going to bed.â
âWait!â She called after you, but you were already walking toward the house, tears pricking the corner of your eyes. She gave Kelce one last slap and rushed after you.
Kelce, barely conscious, still hadnât caught up with his own party foul.
âWhereâs she going?â He asked Topper.
Rafe stood from his chair suddenly.Â
âWill you get him out of here please?â He spat at Topper, sidestepping the fire as he stormed off toward the house.
Rafe followed your path into the kitchen, not sure what he was going to say when he caught up to you, but suddenly overwhelmed with the urge to make it right. He shouldâve said something as soon as Kelce put his foot in his mouth. Heâd deal with that dumbass later.
He slid the kitchen door open, headed towards the stairs that lead to the second floor, but he stopped short when he heard your voice. He stayed back, out of sight but close enough to hear your conversation with Carter on the stairs.
âCarter, itâs fine,â you sighed.
âNo itâs fucking not, he made you cry,â Carter practically growled.
Rafeâs heart dropped. You were crying? He was gonna kick Kelceâs ass as soon as he was sober enough to feel pain.
âIâm just tired,â you sniffled. âPlease, just drop it for now. I just wanna go to sleep.â
âIâm sorry,â Carter said, her voice starting to crack. âI shouldnât have pushed you to stay.â
âItâs not your fault,â you assured her. âI knew he was gonna be here.â
Rafe frowned. Was the âheâ you were referring to still Kelce, or was it him? Was his presence really so distressing to you that you were in tears?
Carter reluctantly bid you goodnight, and Rafe slipped into the pantry so she wouldnât see him when she descended the stairs back into the kitchen, storming towards the backyard, surely on her way to give Kelce hell.
He stood in the walk-in pantry for a minute, collecting his thoughts.Â
Maybe he should be the one to leave. If his presence really was such torment to you, it would be the right thing to do. But you didnât seem tormented earlier when you were playing beer pong with him, cheering each other on and laughing like friends. Or before, at the fire, when youâd come to each otherâs defense. Even his two best friends hadnât seen that Sabrinaâs words actually hurt him, but you did. You always knew him better than anyone.
While he stood in the pantry, illuminated only by the single light bulb above his head, his eyes grazed over the shelf. Between a stack of paper plates and some hamburger buns, sat the candy he had picked out for you at the store. He smiled at the memory of your many car rides as teenagers, fueled by the snacks you had brought when you picked him up. Maybe you regretted those times now, but something about the fact that this was still your favorite candy made him feel better.
His stomach twisted with worry that after what Kelce had said, you would decide to leave. The only worse thought was that he might let you go without finding the courage to say the words heâd been holding onto since he saw you on the beach. Maybe youâd slam the door in his face, but he couldnât let you leave without trying.
Rafe grabbed your candy off the shelf and climbed the stairs two at a time, eager to knock on your bedroom door before he lost his nerve.
